A TUNNEL OF LIGHT:
ANIMAL TALES
THE BIG PICTURE
‘I DO’ — TAKE TWO
People walk Saturday in what is billed as the longest light tunnel in Europe. The holiday attraction in Vevey, Switzerland, is about 55 yards long and includes 28,750 lights.

Painting offers a long, long, long look at America’s whaling history
Well, at least they got that whole ‘in sickness’ part out of the way
A dog wouldn’t come out after chasing a cat into a tunnel dug by a giant tortoise in a back yard in Chandler, Ariz., so homeowner Toby Passmore called for help. Firefighters, aided by a city backhoe, unearthed the 6-foot-deep tunnel dug by Passmore’s tortoise. That let Passmore squirm head-first into the hole last week and pull out his Scottish schnauzer. The cat was left to crawl out on its own when ready. (AP)
The New Bedford (Mass.) Whaling Museum has restored the longest painting in North America so it can share the tale of American whaling. The quartermile-long panorama toured the U.S. after it was done in 1848. A section was shown at the World’s Fair in 1964. The panorama then deteriorated and was put in storage. But the museum had a textile conservator fix the artwork. Now it’s seeking a venue — a large one — to display it. (AP)
A couple who had to leave their wedding reception early when the bride had an allergic reaction was ready for a free do-over Sunday in Deptford, N.J., thanks to a sympathetic caterer and others. When Victoria Tumolo became ill in September, her mother and husband, Dominic, helped her remove her wedding dress so it wouldn’t be cut off in the emergency room. “Not exactly what I was imagining for our wedding night,” Dominic said. to become confident enough in the industry’s longevity to invest in such costly equipment. “I’ve known this is real for a long time, and our customers are now finally saying we need more vinyl,” Astor said. “You either step up or they’ll go somewhere else.” Furnace Record Pressing has contracts with bands such as Metallica and record companies including D.C.-based Dischord Records, a mostly punk label that represents local artists.

The number of vinyl records produced in the United States annually. Furnace Record Pressing’s 50,000-square-foot plant, opening next year in Fairfax County, will have the capacity to make about 9 million records a year, increasing production in the country by almost 20 percent. (TWP)
Brian Lowit, the label manager for Dischord Records, said that in recent years his label has had to wait as long as six months to receive records because of a backlog at the presses. Lowit said Dischord has always posted steady vinyl sales, but in recent years, the bigger, mainstream labels have also turned to vinyl, clogging the small number of presses in the country. Dischord uses Furnace Record Pressing to make some of its records, and Lowit said that when the new plant opens, it will probably have more of its albums pressed at Furnace. “What they’re doing will obviously speed up the turnaround time,” Lowit said. “It’s exciting to have a vinyl plant down the street from us. And I think it’ll be good for other local bands and labels. It’ll make things more accessible.” The new pressing facility will also have a listening room and a small area where local bands can occasionally perform. “I’ve never seen a format for music grow as fast as vinyl,” Astor said. “For the last 30 years, we’ve been hearing this compressed ... garbage. Now you’re listening to it for the first time.” PERRY STEIN

FAIRFAX COUNTY Vinyl records had their day. Then they nearly died. Then they were revived. Now some enthusiasts are so confident in the resiliency of the revival that they are investing millions so the record industry can keep spinning in abundance. And a big part of the future of this nearly bygone medium could unfold in the D.C. suburbs. Eric Astor of Falls Church is opening a record-pressing facility early next year in Fairfax County that he says eventually could increase the production of records in the country by almost 20 percent. The United States produces about 50 million records annually, and he said his business, Furnace Record Pressing, will have the capacity to make about 9 million a year. The 50,000-square-foot plant would help relieve an industry stymied by a supply chain that can’t keep up with rising demand. Record-pressing machines are expensive and bulky, and businesspeople like Astor are starting

local MONTGOMERY COUNTY Montgomery County has finished initial designs for a Bus Rapid Transit system on U.S. 29, bringing the project a step closer to providing faster and more reliable bus service in one of the county’s busiest commuting corridors, officials said. The 13.5-mile project between Burtonsville and downtown Silver Spring, set to open in 2020, will be the first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Maryland. Like many urban-suburban jurisdictions, Montgomery is turning to buses as a relatively quick and

more affordable way to improve transit, curb traffic congestion and spur economic growth. Preliminary designs show 11 stations, all of them surpassing the traditional pole-in-theground bus stop. Benches will sit beneath canopies and solar panels will power station lighting. Columns will display the station name and a video screen will show the next bus’s arrival time. Joana Conklin, the county’s program manager, said the designs are 35 percent done and will be finalized next year. Construction is scheduled to begin in

Conklin said the county is launching its planned 102-mile BRT network on U.S. 29 because the corridor already has some of the highest bus ridership in the state, with 11,000 to 12,000 people riding daily. The BRT line will use the road shoulders as bus-only lanes for the northern half, where buses already use them during rush hours. “We had this corridor that felt like we could do something with pretty easily,” Conklin said. Parole board will change its view of 3-strikes law The chairwoman of Virginia’s parole board said it will reinterpret a three-strikes law in a way that could free hundreds of inmates. The Virginian-Pilot reported Saturday that the now-defunct version of the law has kept offenders in prison for decades. Adrianne Bennett, the parole board’s chairwoman, said the state will classify someone as a three-striker only if he or she committed one of the crimes between stints in prison. Inmates whose crimes were committed in the same stretch of time — and who had never been to prison before — could be freed. (AP)

Police: Youth pastor kills 3 at home on Thanksgiving

Alleged MS-13 member charged in grisly slaying
A youth pastor in Virginia has been charged with fatally shooting his wife, her daughter and her daughter’s boyfriend on Thanksgiving Day. The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported Friday that Christopher R. Gattis, 58, was being held at a county jail without bail. The shootings occurred at the house they all shared in Chester. Police said Jeanett Gattis, 58, and her daughter, 30-year-old Candice Kunze, were found inside the home. Kunze’s boyfriend, 36-year-old Andrew Buthorn, was found outside. Officers took Gattis into custody at the scene. Gattis is the youth pastor at Grace Lutheran Church in Chester. (AP)
Some cities and municipal groups in Virginia like the idea of a tax on streaming services such as Netflix and Spotify. The Daily Press reported Saturday that cities such as Newport News and groups such as the Virginia Municipal League say it would generate local tax revenue. They’re asking state lawmakers to apply the 5 percent Communications Sales and Use Tax to streaming service subscriptions. The change would mean that a $7.99 monthly bill for a basic Netflix package would increase 40 cents. A premium monthly subscription for Spotify, $9.99, would increase by 50 cents. (AP)
Police in Maryland said they have charged an alleged MS-13 gang member with first-degree murder in the death of a man stabbed more than 100 times. Montgomery County police said Miguel Angel Lopez-Abrego, 19, was charged in the death of a man whose body was discovered buried in a park in Wheaton in September. LopezAbrego is a citizen of El Salvador and is in the U.S. illegally, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said. Court papers said the killers cut the victim’s heart out and threw it in the grave. Investigators have been unable to identify the victim.

TRANSPORTATION The day after Thanksgiving brought two SmarTrip-related announcements for Metro riders. One was an expansion of the popular SelectPass fare pass program, which is likely to be welcomed, while another development will surely pose a hassle for scores of riders beginning in the new year. Metro will soon stop allowing negative balances on SmarTrip cards amid its push to enforce its fares and crack down on fare evaders. While not technically fare evasion, negative balances have cost Metro an estimated $25 million over 17 years. That pales in comparison to the $25 million per year lost because of fare evaders. But the cash-strapped agency said no amount of lost revenue is too small to recover. Metro estimates it will save

Egypt reeling from attack

Survivors give accounts of massacre at mosque that killed 305 people
Ratko Mladic, a former Serb warlord who commanded forces that carried out some of the worst atrocities of the Balkan wars, was found guilty of genocide and other crimes against humanity by an international tribunal Wednesday. Mladic, 74, was sentenced to life in prison for his role in the bloodiest chapter of European history since World War II. His case was the last major prosecution by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, which the United Nations set up in 1993. (TWP) BEIRUT AP
SINAI PENINSULA, EGYPT Egypt was reeling Sunday from the horrific militant attack on a mosque in northern Sinai that killed 305 people two days earlier — the deadliest assault by Islamic extremists in Egypt’s modern history and a grim milestone in a long-running fight against the insurgency led by an Islamic State affiliate. Survivors and Egypt’s top prosecutor have given accounts of the massacre that unfolded as more than two dozen assailants, carrying a black ISIS banner, unleashed gunfire and explosions during Friday prayers at al-Rawdah Mosque in a sleepy village by the same name near the small town of Bir al-Abd. The attackers arrived in five SUVs, took positions across from the mosque’s door and windows, and just as the imam was about to deliver his sermon from the pulpit, opened fire and tossed grenades at the estimated 500 people inside. The worshippers screamed and cried out in pain. A stampede broke out in the rush toward a door leading to the washrooms. Others tried desperately to force their way out of the windows. Those who survived spoke of children screaming as they saw parents and siblings mowed down by gunfire or shredded

by the blasts. When the violence finally stopped, 305 people, including 27 children, had been killed and 128 wounded. One of the witnesses, Ebid Salem Mansour, recalled that the attackers shouted, “Allahu akbar,” or “God is great,” as they fired on the worshippers. So composed were the militants that they methodically checked their victims for any sign of life after the initial round of blazing gunfire. Those still moving or breathing received a bullet to the head or the chest, the witnesses said. When the ambulances arrived they shot at them, repelling them as they got
back into their vehicles and fled. Friday’s attack targeted a mosque frequented by Sufis, members of a mystic movement within Islam. Islamic militants, including ISIS, consider Sufis heretics because of their less literal interpretations of the faith. Egypt’s chief prosecutor, Nabil Sadeq, said the attackers, some masked, numbered between 25 and 30. Those with bare faces sported heavy beards and long hair, his statement added. They were clad in military-style camouflage pants and black T-shirts, and one carried a black banner with the declaration of the Muslim faith: There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his prophet.
Despite the banner, ISIS has not claimed responsibility for the attack. “We knew that the mosque was under attack,” said Mansour, a 38-year-old who suffered two gunshot wounds to his legs Friday. “Everyone lay down on the floor and kept their heads down. If you raised your head you get shot.” President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi vowed that the attack “will not go unpunished” and that Egypt would persevere with its war on terrorism. He did not specify what new steps might be taken. On Saturday, he ordered that a mausoleum be built in memory of the victims of Friday’s attack. MAGGIE MICHAEL AND HAMZA HENDAWI (AP)

Government airstrikes and shelling outside the Syrian capital of Damascus killed at least 23 civilians, activists reported Sunday, as fighting in the area showed no signs of letting up ahead of the resumption of U.N. peace talks in Geneva on Tuesday. The government launched a wave of attacks on residential areas in the Eastern Ghouta suburbs of Damascus, said the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group, which reported that 25 people had been killed. The Ghouta Media Center said 23 civilians had been killed. There are some 350,000 people in need of immediate aid in Eastern Ghouta. (AP)
Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez, a conservative U.S. ally, appeared likely to win a second term on Sunday despite opposition claims that his re-election would be an unconstitutional power grab. Hernandez’s popularity is based largely on a drop in violence in the impoverished Central American country, whose homicide rate was once among the world’s worst. Turnout appeared to be heavy across the country on Sunday, with relatively minor irregularities reported. Sunday’s elections are the 10th in Honduras since the country returned to democracy in 1980 after two decades of military regimes. (AP)
Pakistani security forces refrained Sunday from cracking down again on an Islamist sit-in, now in its third week, after violence the previous day killed six people and wounded scores. Over 3,000 Muslim activists rallied near Islamabad in support of a religious party demanding the resignation of the country’s law minister over an omitted reference to Islam’s Prophet Muhammad in a parliamentary bill. Encouraged by the countrywide protests in their support, a Tehreek-i-Labaik Ya Rasool Allah party leader called for a countrywide strike today against what he called “atrocities” committed by police on Saturday. nation+world Democrat steps aside as judiciary panel leader amid harassment claims POLITICS Rep. John Conyers Jr., Mich., the longest-serving member of Congress, stepped aside Sunday as the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee amid growing internal pressure as an ethics investigation of sexual harassment allegations against him begins. Conyers, 88, said he would not resign from Congress and instead would fight the allegations in the hope of reclaiming his spot atop the committee, which oversees federal laws and other legal issues. “I very much look forward to vindicating
myself and my family before the House Committee on Ethics,” he wrote Sunday in a letter to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. Conyers settled a sexual harassment complaint brought by a former staffer in 2015, leaving her on the payroll as a temporary employee and paying out just under $30,000. Conyers has denied any wrongdoing and said his payout was meant to resolve the issue and did not constitute an admission of culpability. Pelosi issued a statement after Conyers’ announcement: “Any credible accusation must be reviewed by the Ethics Committee expeditiously. We are at a watershed moment on this issue.” The announcement came after

On NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Pelosi declined to say whether Conyers would suffer any immediate penalty over the allegations. “We are strengthened by due process. Just because someone is accused — and was it one accusation? Is it two? I think there has to be — John Conyers is an icon in our country,” Pelosi said when asked if Conyers should resign. Battle looms over who will head the CFPB POLITICS A court fight may be brewing over President Trump’s move to make a close aide the interim leader of a consumer protection agency that has been assailed by Republicans and championed by Democrats, displacing the official elevated by the departing director. Both the Trump administration and Richard Cordray, an Obama-era appointee who submitted his resignation as head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau on Friday, contend the law is on their side and that their pick is the rightful leader. Trump’s choice is his budget chief, Mick Mulvaney, a former congressman who has called the agency a “joke” and an example of bureaucracy run amok. Mulvaney, above, is expected to dismantle much of what the bureau has done. Cordray, long criticized by congressional Republicans as overzealous, made chief of staff Leandra English the interim director, and Democrats say that under the law creating the agency, that official takes over when the No. 1 steps aside. Beyond the fight over who’s calling the shots come Monday is the future direction of the CFPB, created after the 2008 financial crisis and given a broad mandate as a watchdog for consumers when they deal with banks and credit card, student loan and mortgage companies, as well as debt collectors and payday lenders. Tim Scott of South Carolina, as the party establishment cringed at Trump’s latest intervention in the closely contested race. “In my opinion, and in the opinion of many Republicans and conservatives in the Senate, it is time for us to turn the page because it is not about partisan politics. It’s not about electing Republicans versus Democrats,” Scott said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week.” “It’s about the character of our country,” he said. Trump on Sunday once again

In D.C., Ovi pushes for Putin Capitals star insists that his public support of a social movement for the Russian president is not political RUSSIA For more than a dozen years, Alex Ovechkin has skated between two worlds: his country of birth and his professional home. He’s beloved, cheered and revered in both. He regularly has tried to appease supporters in these disparate homes, making his living playing hockey in the United States’ capital while spending much of his offseason in Russia’s. And while the hockey star has never hidden his affection for Vladimir Putin, Ovechkin this month raised the stakes considerably, announcing on his Instagram account that he was organizing a movement to support the Russian president. “Today, I want to announce a social movement in the name of PutinTeam,” Ovechkin wrote in the post. “Be a part of this team — to me it’s a privilege, it’s like the feeling of when you put on the jersey of the Russian team, knowing that the whole country is rooting for you.” Ovechkin has given an unwavering endorsement to a man who U.S. intelligence agencies say sanctioned Russian meddling in last year’s presidential election. At the same time, Ovechkin insists his advocacy is free of politics. “I’m not a politic,” Ovechkin said in a recent interview. “I don’t know what’s happening out there. … You know, I play here, and this is my second home. I don’t want to fight between two countries, because it’s going to be a mess.” The situation is certainly a thorny one for the Washington Capitals and the NHL. Ted Leonsis, the Capitals owner who signed Ovechkin to a 13-year, $124 million contract in 2008, declined to comment for this article, as did the league office. Ovechkin, 32, has a personal

phone number for Putin and received a wedding present from him last year. Ovechkin says he is aware that supporting Putin could rub some Americans the wrong way, but Capitals fans are still showing up to games wearing Ovechkin’s No. 8 jersey. “It’s been good reactions, and it’s been bad reactions,” said Ovechkin, who began learning English when he arrived in Washington. “People have own mind, own views.” Though Ovechkin shared no details of his PutinTeam effort when he made his Instagram post Nov. 2, last week he announced the soft launch of a new Russianlanguage website — putinteam.ru — inviting people to sign up for the team, track related news, participate in contests and attend and organize events. POLITICS President Trump said Sunday that electing a Democrat as Alabama’s next senator “would be a disaster,” making clear that the success of his legislative agenda outweighs widespread GOP repulsion at the prospect of seating Republican Roy Moore, who is dogged by allegations of sexual misconduct. The allegations, including claims that Moore, 70, sexually assaulted or molested two teenage girls while he was in his 30s, have made the Dec. 12 election a referendum on “the character

HELPING HOMELESS MAN
Relationship history The first known encounter between Alex Ovechkin and Vladimir Putin was in May 2007, and the relationship seemed to grow in the buildup to the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Ovechkin was given the honor of running the first leg of the Olympic torch’s journey from Greece to Moscow. The Russians didn’t win a hockey medal, but three months later they beat Finland to win the world championship in Belarus. Cameras showed Ovechkin helping Putin drink champagne from the trophy. Putin reportedly rewarded each player with a Mercedes. (TWP)
but it was not immediately clear who funded and created the site. The official line from the Kremlin is that Putin did not know in advance about Ovechkin’s plans.
Ovechkin maintains that the idea was his and says he felt it was the right thing to do for his country. Asked whether anyone enlisted him to launch the campaign on Putin’s behalf, Ovechkin quickly answered, “No.” But Russian media have begun linking the PutinTeam movement back to the Russian government. The financial newspaper Vedomosti, citing Kremlin sources, reported that the project was developed by a Moscow consulting agency called IMA-Consulting, which holds a reported $600,000 contract to promote Russia’s presidential election in March. Putin is expected to seek a new six-year term. There are more than 30 Russians playing in the NHL, but only Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin has followed Ovechkin’s lead and joined PutinTeam.
Trump administration changes course, allows Palestine Liberation Organization office in D.C. to remain open
A U.S.-based hockey agent who represents Russian players in North America said of Ovechkin’s initiative: “All of my clients, everybody’s rolling their eyes, basically, saying, ‘What the [heck]?’ It’s like he’s lobbying for a job in politics.” Even among hockey players, Ovechkin is clearly treated differently. At a news conference last summer, Malkin was being honored as the best Russian player in the NHL when he was asked by a Russian reporter, “Have you ever received a phone call on your mobile phone from President Vladimir Putin?” “No,” Malkin said. “I am not Alexander Ovechkin, after all.” Ovechkin has mostly sidestepped political discussions. A person close to him said that Ovechkin tries to navigate a tightrope, supporting one country while trying not to offend the other, and that the PutinTeam initiative has underscored the difficulties he faces. “If he played in Carolina, this probably wouldn’t be as interesting to some people as it probably is, just given where he lives and works and what he does,” said the Ovechkin associate, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Ovechkin has downplayed the depth of his friendship with Putin, saying in a recent interview that the two don’t have much in common. “We talk about hockey and all that stuff. That’s it,” Ovechkin said. Ovechkin says he mostly watches hockey news but occasionally takes in political reports. At the least, he knows how Putin is perceived by many in the U.S. “But again, it’s their view,” he said. “My view is my view. Your view is your view.” RICK MAESE, ISABELLE KHURSHUDYAN AND ANDREW ROTH (THE WASHINGTON POST)

In just 55 NFL games, Sean Taylor created a body of work that still motivates players today.

DAN STEINBERG | THE WASHINGTON POST
Hard-hitting legacy: Taylor still inspires 10 years after death The routine hasn’t changed since D.J. Swearinger’s junior year of high school. Before he takes the field on game days, he watches the same blurry video, a montage that turns 10 years old this week. Swearinger even knows the length of the video by heart — it’s 3 minutes and 32 seconds of Sean Taylor wrecking NFL offenses, set to “Thuggish Ruggish Bone” by Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. Swearinger wasn’t even a teenager when he first became entranced with Taylor’s talent, range and power. He was only 16 when Taylor died 10 years ago today. But Swearinger was hooked. Now he won’t play football without watching that grainy montage. “Something about him [was]
different; it stuck with me ’til now,” Swearinger said. “… That dominant force that he played with was unmatched. Still unmatched. I’m trying to get there myself.” I never would have predicted in the immediate aftermath of Taylor’s murder that a generation of defensive backs would grow up idolizing a man whose pro career lasted just 55 games. An ESPN piece that aired Sunday morning drives that point home. It features Swearinger, who paid a five-figure sum to secure No. 36 — Taylor’s first uniform number in Washington — along with Packers safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Giants safety Landon Collins, both of whom wear Taylor’s more familiar No. 21. These men were all about the same age when Taylor died — 16, 14, 13. As a group,
they’ve helped keep the Taylor legend churning. None of them plays football quite like Taylor, because no one really does. But they want to. “It’s an homage, it’s honoring him, and I think it’s really cool,” said Ryan Clark, Taylor’s former teammate and close friend, who narrates the ESPN piece. “It makes me feel good that they still talk about him and still love him in that way.” It isn’t just that trio, either. There’s Steelers DB Sean Davis, who wore No. 21 at Maryland in honor of Taylor. “I just loved everything about him,” Davis once said. Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor is another local who grew up a Redskins fan. “He’s with me in the game, on my

shoulder every week,” Chancellor has said of Taylor. As Clark pointed out, part of Taylor’s appeal is that we never even saw his peak. We never saw a slowing Taylor beaten badly on a go route. Or a broken-down Taylor taking up a roster spot, or cut for salary cap reasons. Or an overweight Taylor playing golf. And some of the Taylor memorializing has felt complicated. The mixture of tragedy with crass sports-radio takes. The concern that death not be commodified by a league that sells everything. The deification of a kid who was just 24 when he died, before anyone really knew what he’d become as a football player or a person. So here’s a part of the story that feels blessedly straightforward. For a generation of football players, Taylor became the dream. For them, he lives on in YouTube highlight reels, in uniform numbers and in their pregame reflections. “To play in the same uniform that he once did is humbling; it’s a blessing every time I put it on,” Swearinger said. “It’s all about Sean T. with me.”

Julio Jones hauled in 12 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns in one of the best games of his career. The Falcons (7-4) nearly squandered a big lead to a visiting team playing its third game without injured QB Jameis Winston. The Buccaneers (4-7) rebounded from a 27-6 deficit behind backup Ryan Fitzpatrick. Carson Wentz tossed three touchdown passes and the NFLleading Eagles beat the Bears in Philadelphia for their ninth straight win. The Eagles (10-1) reduced their magic number to clinch the NFC East to one with their fourth consecutive win by at least 23 points. Philadelphia would secure its first division title since 2013 if the Cowboys (5-6) tie or lose to Washington (5-6) on Thursday. Tom Brady tossed four touchdown passes at home — including two to tight end Rob Gronkowski — and the Patriots pushed through injuries in a mistake-filled game. New England (9-2) posted its seventh consecutive victory and third straight win over Miami. The Dolphins (4-7) have lost five straight for their longest slide since 2011. Terrapins boast most diverse group in Big Ten MEN’S BASKETBALL After the Terrapins’ first practice in Florida for a two-game trip as part of the Emerald Coast Classic last week, a friendly soccer game broke out in the gym. Bruno Fernando, above, a freshman from Angola, headed the ball to Alex Tostado, a walkon from Mexico, who kicked it to Joshua Tomaic, a redshirt freshman who hails from the Canary Islands. Maryland is the most internationally diverse team in the Big Ten — with players from eight countries including the U.S. — and the game was the latest example that this isn’t an ordinary roster. Maryland, which lost its first game of the season against St. Bonaventure on Friday before getting an 80-65 win over New Mexico on Saturday in Niceville, Fla., has players fluent in six languages aside from English. Michal Cekovsky (Slovakia) and Ivan Bender (Bosnia and Herzegovina) form a European contingent. Justin Jackson is from Toronto, and Duke graduate transfer Sean Obi is from Kaduna, Nigeria. Kevin Huerter, who is from Clifton Park, N.Y., said the team’s makeup is unlike any he’s seen. “I think it has brought us closer together,” he said. Huerter returns to his home state when Maryland (6-1) visits Syracuse (5-0) tonight (7, ESPN2). He’ll be able to tell visiting family and friends about all the culture he’s encountered. Six-time medal winner speaks up for fellow survivors of sex abuse
USA GYMNASTICS People approach Aly Raisman almost daily. Men and women of various ages, races and backgrounds see the six-time Olympic medal-winning gymnast in public and come forward with a hug to give and a story to tell. She admitted it’s still jarring. When Raisman pitched her autobiography “Fierce” to publishers after the 2016 Olympics, she
intended to focus on her athletic journey. But the part that’s resonated the most since the book’s release this month is a chapter titled “The Survivors.” Raisman, 23, outlines how she was abused by former national team doctor Larry Nassar — who pleaded guilty to sexual assault charges in Michigan on Wednesday and faces at least 25 years in prison. Nassar’s relationship with USA Gymnastics ended in 2015 after an allegation of abuse, but he continued working at Michigan State and volunteering at a USA Gymnastics-affiliated club.

Raisman turns focus to advocacy
Aly Raisman has become a critic of USA Gymnastics since she was abused by a former team doctor.
“USA Gymnastics is responsible for kids at that gym,” Raisman said. “Instead of doing their job, they let Larry keep working.”
American Mikaela Shiffrin, 22, wins slalom in Vermont, leads World Cup standings
She has found that Nassar’s crimes, including allegations from her teammates McKayla Maroney and Gabby Douglas, are part of a wider problem. Her priority now is educating athletes and parents on signs of abuse and pushing for leadership changes at USA Gymnastics, which saw CEO Steve Penny resign in March and hired Toby Stark as SafeSport director in July. Her new calling makes thinking about a return for the 2020 Olympics seem trivial. “This is the focus,” she said. WILL GRAVES (AP)

1 ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ Wednesday on Amazon
Netflix’s wonderful Wild West The platform delivers a timely and engaging Western with ‘Godless’ STREAMING A person could spend decades waiting for a Western as immersive and satisfying as “Godless,” Scott Frank’s seven-part drama for Netflix, out now. True to the genre in almost every way — and yet refreshingly modern in providing strong, vital roles for women — it plays like a sevenhour film without wasting a glorious, gritty, panoramic minute. The story, set in northern New Mexico in 1884, revolves around a notorious gang of silver thieves led by Frank Griffin (Jeff Daniels), whose capricious derangement mixes both a violent and spiritual nature. During a raid,
Frank is betrayed by his protege Roy Goode (Jack O’Connell), whom Frank adopted as a boy. Frank and his men set off in pursuit of Roy, seeking revenge. Roy has the good fortune to trot up to a horse ranch owned by Alice Fletcher — played by Michelle Dockery, who continues to marvelously distance herself from her Lady Mary days on “Downton Abbey.” The Fletcher ranch sits just outside La Belle, where a recent mining disaster killed nearly every man in town — 83 in all — leaving their widows to figure out what to do next. Mary Agnes McNue (Merritt Wever) dons trousers and tweeds, reclaims her maiden name and acts as La Belle’s de facto mayor. Her brother, Bill McNue (Scoot McNairy), is the town’s sheriff, disregarded by

This 1950s-set dramedy from “Gilmore Girls” creator Amy Sherman-Palladino follows a housewife in Manhattan who decides to pursue a career in stand-up comedy. (EXPRESS)
No compromises If “Godless” grips you like a movie, perhaps that’s because it began as one: Creator Scott Frank shelved his labor of love, a three-hour Western, more than a decade ago. Filmmaker Steven Soderbergh then persuaded Frank to expand it into a series. Frank told Variety: “I’m really glad it didn’t get made as a feature because I got to tell so much more story this way.” (TWP/EXPRESS)
the citizenry as a coward. Attention is paid to each character’s nuances and shortcomings as an emotional storm builds up to a fine example of a Wild West showdown. The cast is phenomenal: Daniels makes a menacing bad guy from start to finish, and O’Connell, as Roy, is convincing
as a quiet and flawed hero. As a way to prove himself to his citizens, Sheriff Bill sets out, somewhat comically, to find Frank Griffin’s gang, while an egocentric Taos newspaperman, A.T. Grigg (Jeremy Bobb), stirs up rumors in print, hoping to cover the gunfight of the century. It is here that the women of La Belle realize that they must rely on themselves, arming up to defend their town from the masculine posturing and chaos that’s inexorably headed their way. As “Godless” briefly pivots on a strongly feminist note, Netflix again exhibits its uncanny luck with timing: What could be more affirming right now than a show about women standing together against an invading horde of brutes?

High score: Hulu’s ‘Future Man’ is a hazy sci-fi adventure Even in this age of the antihero, Josh Futturman of “Future Man” (now streaming on Hulu) sets the bar pretty low. Futturman is an earnest failure, portrayed with a semi-dazed look of regret by Josh Hutcherson of “Hunger Games” fame. He works as a janitor in a medical lab, plunging stopped-up toilets. He lives with his indulgent parents, who call him “Joshy.” Futturman’s only true joy is playing the video game “Biotic Wars” and dreaming that he’s a superhero called “Future Man.” Then destiny calls on Joshy. He finally beats the video
game. “You are the savior,” declares the purple-haired female character Tiger. Then she and her male companion, Wolf, step out of the screen and into Josh’s room just as he’s engaging in some postgame self-pleasuring. Ickiness ensues. And also … a storyline. Tiger and Wolf are from the year 2162. Earth is a disaster. They believe Futturman’s ability to win “Biotic Wars” means he has the skills to change fate. The mission: Stop a scientist named Dr. Kronish from getting herpes in 1969, because his subsequent discovery of a cure for the STD will “bring down all mankind.” In a weird coincidence, Dr. Kronish is the boss at the lab where Futturman cleans up
crap. So back in time goes the unlikely trio, to the tune of “Break on Through (To the Other Side)” by The Doors. Only they don’t quite break on through. Joshy sucks at fisticuffs, to the dismay of Tiger, played with exquisitely frosty hauteur by Eliza Coupe. Tiger’s willingness to kill just for the heck of it upsets sweetnatured Josh. And Wolf is falling in love with … pickles, which he encounters for the first time at the Los Angeles deli Canter’s. “Those green longs are f---ing amazing,” he says — much tastier than his usual diet of “garbage and rats.” Seth Rogen is one of the executive producers, which may explain why the show seems to have been conceived in a marijuana-induced haze. And even though it’s stupendously silly apocalyptic sci-fi, you may find that when you’ve got nothing better to do, you’ll crave another toke. Read Marc’s previous columns at washingtonpost.com/muse
