An amateur soccer team in Dublin faked the death of a player to get out of a game, NPR reported Wednesday. After Fernando LaFuente left Dublin for a job in Galway, his former team, Ballybrack FC, told league officials he’d died in an accident. The Saturday game was called off, and other teams in the league observed a moment of silence. “It’s funny for me because I’ve been watching my own death,” LaFuente told Ireland’s RTE One. (EXPRESS)

Officials say a teen has been freed after spending more than three hours in the vault of an abandoned Florida bank. Hollywood firefighters tried to drill through a wall to break into the vault Wednesday after the 17-year-old’s friend called 911. But they were stymied until a worker at the bank’s new branch across the street heard of the predicament. That worker remembered the code and was able to open the vault’s massive door. (AP)

Police say exotic birds worth a total of $15,000 were stolen from a New Haven, Conn., pet store this week. Police were called early Tuesday when a newspaper deliverer noticed a pried-open door. The Connecticut Post reported responding officers found pet food and bird feathers strewn about the store. The owner was called to the scene, and said several pricey birds were gone — nearly $15,000 in rare parrots, conures and cockatoos. (AP)

window so people would know his name. In June 2015, Romo left the Adams Morgan home where he had lived since 2007 and moved to Arlington with his family, which includes two human brothers. His social media followers were saddened by the move, but continued to follow his activities online. “Romo was the best part of my commute for a long time,” Jake DeBacher wrote in a Facebook message. “Sincere condolences.”

A dozen transportation startups are vying for permits to operate shared scooters and bicycles in D.C. next year. The District Department of Transportation is reviewing applications from 12 companies, including six already operating through the city’s pilot program, to be part of an expanded, permanent program. If all are approved, the number of companies operating personal mobility services in the District would double, and by spring, as many as 10,000 devices could be available for rent.

When Romo moved from the D.C. neighborhood to Northern Virginia, his fans missed him and continued to follow the canine celebrity’s Facebook page. But his owners recently shared the news that Romo had died of cancer. On Thanksgiving weekend, his owners wrote on Facebook, “It is with a heavy yet full heart that I share, from 4 weeks until today, Romo’s very rich 11 years on this earth.” The post went on: “I know he was greeted in heaven with so many loved ones. He gave us endless love, laughter, entertainment, and drool. He was our son. Suspect’s motive is key at Va. rally trial opening

Gun control measure heads to city council vote

James Alex Fields Jr. faces murder charges related to hate protest

ZACK WAJSGRAS (THE DAILY PROGRESS VIA AP)

CHARLOTTESVILLE No one disputes that James Alex Fields Jr. plowed his car into a crowd of counter-protesters at a white nationalist rally in Virginia last year, killing a woman and injuring dozens more. The only question, jurors were told Thursday, is: Why did he do it? During opening statements at his murder trial, prosecutors and defense lawyers painted two starkly different pictures of what prompted Fields — a 21-year-old reputed Hitler admirer — to drive his gray Dodge Challenger into a crowd of people in Charlottesville on Aug. 12, 2017. Prosecutor Nina-Alice Antony told the jury Fields was angry after fighting broke out earlier that day between white nationalists who came to Charlottesville to protest the planned removal of a statute of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee and others who came to protest against them. Antony said Fields had driven all night from his home in Maumee, Ohio, to attend the rally in support of white nationalists. A former teacher of Fields has said he was fascinated by Nazism and admired Adolf Hitler. Three months before the rally, Fields twice posted on Instagram an image of a crowd being struck by a car, Antony said.

“This case is about his decision to act on that anger,” Antony said. D efense attorney John Hill Fields agreed there’s no doubt Fields drove the car that careened into the crowd, but Hill said it happened after hours of violent clashes between white nationalists and counter-protesters. Hill said Fields eventually met up with two other people who will testify that he was not angry and appeared calm when he gave them a ride to their cars. A short time later, Fields drove into the crowd. One of the first witnesses called by prosecutors was a man whose image was captured in a

dramatic photo as he was struck by Fields’ car. Marcus Martin became tearful several times while testifying, particularly when asked to describe Heather Heyer, a 32-year-old paralegal and civil rights activist who was killed when she was struck by Fields’ car. “She was just a great person,” Martin said, his voice cracking with emotion. Martin said he, his fiancee, Heyer and another friend had just joined the group of counterprotesters when he heard tires screech. He said he pushed his fiancee out of the way and was then hit by Fields’ car, suffering a broken leg and other injuries. “I really didn’t know what happened,” he said. DENISE LAVOIE (AP)

District names new nightlife office director Applications to become D.C.’s first nightlife director came in from around the world, but Mayor Muriel Bowser selected a lead investigator from her own liquor board to take on the city’s “after-hours economy” — noise, crime, rats and all. Shawn Townsend, who ran a team of six investigators at the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration, will take over the city’s inaugural Office of Nightlife and Culture next month. Bowser introduced him Wednesday during the launch of the Dupont Circle Business Improvement District. “Across the city, we need somebody focused on our nighttime economy because it is a big contributor to everything we’re able to do in the government,” she said. VIRGINIA MEDICAID EXPANSION

The number of low-income residents Virginia is on track to add to its Medicaid rolls by July 2020, outpacing projections made before the General Assembly agreed to expand the program early this year. State officials had estimated 300,000 Virginians would probably enroll in the federal-state health insurance program in the first 18 months of expansion, which takes effect Jan. 1. “There’s a lot of demand and need out there for this coverage,” said Jennifer Lee, director of the state’s Department of Medical Assistance Services. Slow transit growing fast D.C. and a lot of other cities want self-driving shuttles, but they come with new challenges shaped decisions from the start. “We made one, screaming, loud, very fundamental choice with Olli, and that was Ollis aren’t going to go over roughly 18 miles an hour, and most of the time they drive at 5 to 8 miles an hour,” Rogers said.

A future in D.C.?

Olli, a roboshuttle, is parked at developer Local Motors’ offices in Maryland.

MICHAEL ROBINSON CHAVEZ PHOTOS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

TRANSPORTATION From the Mall to Lincoln, Neb., planners across the United States are pushing slow-rolling roboshuttles as a way to dip their toes into greater automation. The stubby, bread-box-looking vehicles go about 10 mph, and boosters say they’re a relatively easy and potentially transformative tool for moving people. Others counsel caution, raising concerns about safety, oversight and economic viability, and fears about adding congestion to roadways and eliminating jobs. A business group in the District wants one of the self-driving shuttles to connect the Smithsonian, with its millions of visitors, to the city’s resurgent waterfront less than a half mile away. At Maryland’s National Harbor, shuttle maker Local Motors has applied for permits to start carrying potential buyers past a replica of Air Force One as early as next month, with rides expected to open to the public later next year. But the fast-changing field of slow-moving people-movers is also fraught with challenges, experts said.

Potential difficulties A recent federal study described potential difficulties facing communities hungry to deploy the shuttles. Federal “Buy America” rules requiring domestic “content and assembly” could thwart some purchasers, because some top producers are overseas, including in Europe, where the vehicles have a longer history, according to a September report from the U.S. Transportation Department. More broadly, there can be “misaligned expectations” about the vehicles’ performance, the authors of the report found. The need to frequently charge the electric vehicles can take

Olli vehicles use a radar-like device to sense objects around the shuttle.

them out of service for significant stretches, shrinking operating hours and adding costs, they wrote. And requirements that humans be on board as backups undercut the business advantages of going driverless. As for the technology, many current models “have limited or no ability to classify objects” they encounter, the study notes. That could mean slower or more tentative trips. Jay Rogers, the chief executive of Local Motors, which builds its Olli shuttles using 3D-printing technology, said safety has

Nebraska test case To help people get acclimated to roboshuttles, Lincoln, Neb., rolled out a temporary shuttle at a technology campus earlier this year as part of a grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies. Did people think the shuttle from French firm Navya was safe? “That was a resounding yes,” said Lonnie Burklund, assistant director of the Lincoln Transportation and Utilities Department. They are now planning for a broader rollout, which they hope might help more seniors and others live downtown. (TWP)

Metro Transit Police arrest two in alleged assault of blind passenger on Red Line train

In the District, the Southwest Business Improvement District, working with the city, put out a call in February looking for companies to run an autonomous vehicle pilot. Many of the firms that responded turned the table on the business group, asking exactly what big-picture transportation challenges they and the city officials supporting them were actually trying to solve. “It was a wake-up call for us,” Steve Moore, the group’s executive director, said. It prompted months of discussions with other business groups and city officials about the broader vision, a process that has taken greater urgency with Ford’s announcement last month that it plans to test driverless cars in the city next year and open a transportation and delivery service in the District and other cities in 2021. For all the excitement, though, not everyone is taken by the vision of slo-mo shuttles. During a recent lunch hour in the District, Elizabeth Simmons was one of two people riding the existing, free, old-school bus running on compressed natural gas to and from the waterfront. “The idea of replacing a big shuttle with little shuttles that clog up D.C. roads isn’t stellar,” she said, stepping off for coffee. Her priority is getting there fast and reliably. Plus, she said, “the drivers we have are great.” MICHAEL LARIS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

No cheery tunes in Metro this holiday season? Q. ‘Tis the season when you might expect to hear holiday music at Gallery Place and the two other stations where Metro has been piping in soft jazz. But the other day not a tune was playing, not even Musak. Why? A. After much fanfare and occasional controversy, the experiment of playing music to “improve the Metro experience,” first at Gallery Place and later at Columbia Heights and Judiciary Square, seems to have gone silent. To some, like Alix Boucher, whom we wrote about in September, that’s good news. As the mother of a 2-year-old, she hates the smooth jazz because she prefers a little bit of quiet time on her commute. “It’s blessedly quiet at Columbia Heights!” said Boucher, who hasn’t heard the music for a couple of weeks. Sorry, Alix: Metro says the silence will only last while work is being done on the public address systems. It’s unclear why the PA systems can make announcements but not play music, but we’re told the music will be back. “Ugh … I guess I’ll enjoy it while it lasts!” Boucher said when she was told her reprieve was only temporary. Lunar program marks one giant leap for NASA SCIENCE NASA’s next lunar science experiments will arrive at the moon via a spacecraft built by one of nine private companies — a first for one of the agency’s science missions. The Commercial Lunar Payload Services program is a priority of NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine, who said in May that leveraging commercial capabilities would allow for more frequent and affordable access to the lunar surface. “More missions, more science,” a news release about the CLPS program promised. It also continues a trend at NASA toward public-private partnerships for exploration. Under President George W. Bush, companies were awarded contracts to fly cargo to the International Space Station. The Commercial Crew Program, developed under President Barack Obama, will pay companies to transport human crews. The CLPS missions would be the agency’s first such partnership in deep space. The first could fly as early as next year, and NASA hopes to send two payloads each year for the next 10 years. It’s not yet clear what kind of instruments NASA hopes to send, though the first call for

It’s been a while … No U.S. spacecraft has touched down on the moon since the last Apollo mission in 1972, and it’s been 50 years since NASA last sent a robotic mission to the lunar surface. Earlier this year, NASA shocked scientists by canceling the Resource Prospector mission, the only American lunar rover currently in development. proposals might come out in the coming weeks or months. Most of the companies involved have never flown a spacecraft of this complexity and scale, and

Bridenstine acknowledged that some of the CLPS missions will likely fail to achieve a “soft” landing on the lunar surface. “This is a venture capital kind of effort,” he told reporters Thursday. “At the end of the day the risk is high, but the return is also very high for a low investment.” Associate Administrator for Science Thomas Zurbuchen added: “It’s a big experiment.” The relatively small and inexpensive payloads delivered via the CLPS program would be followed by medium- and largeclass missions, Bridenstine said, including an eventual crewed mission to the moon. Egypt says archaeologists have discovered eight limestone sarcophagi with mummies inside about 25 miles south of the capital, Cairo. The Antiquities Ministry said the mummies, dating to ancient Egypt’s Late Period (664-332 B.C.), are covered with a layer of painted material called cartonnage in the form of a human. The mummies were found in an area of King Amenemhat II’s pyramid in the Dahshur royal necropolis, which was the burial site for courtiers and high-ranking officials. The area is home to what is considered to be some of the earliest pyramids. (AP)

Ex-Trump lawyer: I lied Entering a guilty plea, Cohen says he misled Congress about Russia real estate negotiations

WASHINGTONPOST.COM MORNING MIX

Postal Service: ‘Mail, not drugs’ is our mission

“We had a position to possibly do a deal to build a building of some kind in Moscow. I decided not to do it,” Trump said. He said the primary reason he didn’t pursue it was “I was focused on running for president.” He added: “There would be nothing wrong if I did do it. I was running my business while I was campaigning.” It was not immediately clear whether questions about the Russian Trump Tower real estate deal were among those answered by Trump and his lawyers last week. But a prior list of queries that Mueller’s team presented to Trump lawyers this year did include a question about it, and Mueller’s team is known to have asked about Trump’s business dealings over the years. If he did answer questions on the topic, Trump could have problems if the responses deviate from prosecutors’ factual narrative. ERIC TUCKER, LARRY NEUMEISTER AND

Sixteen U.S. Postal Service workers accepted bribes for as low as $250 to transport 2 kilograms or more of cocaine at a time, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia, which began probing their activities in 2015. For that bargain, they received sentences of between three and nine years in federal prison, with the final defendant sentenced Tuesday. “Postal employees are paid to deliver mail, not drugs,” Imari Niles, a special agent with the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General, said in a statement. The Postal Service, which touts itself as the most trusted government agency, has also become a trusted delivery mechanism for drug traffickers. A report released in September by the Postal Service Office of Inspector General found that U.S. mail was an effective means of getting drugs to buyers. One trafficker, the report said, claimed to have used the service to make nearly 4,000 shipments, reporting a 100 percent delivery rate. The system is so trusted by dealers that nearly half of the 96 traffickers identified by the report “offered free, partial, or full reshipment if the package did not arrive to the buyer’s address because it was confiscated, stolen, or lost.”

Michael Cohen, President Trump’s former lawyer, has gone from ally to prime antagonist.

with responses to written questions and is the first new charge filed by the special counsel since the appointment of Matthew Whitaker, who has spoken pejoratively about the investigation, as acting attorney general with oversight of the probe. Cohen’s surprise court appearance marks the latest step in his evolution from trusted Trump consigliere — he said Thursday he had lied out of “loyalty” — to prime antagonist. It is the second time the lawyer’s legal woes have entangled Trump, coming months after Cohen said the president directed him during his campaign to make hush-money payments to two women who said they’d had sex with Trump. Trump on Thursday called Cohen a “weak person” who was lying to get a lighter sentence and repeatedly stressed that the real estate deal at issue was never a secret and never executed. His lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, said that

Trump blasts Mueller President Trump took to Twitter for a fourth straight morning on Thursday to attack special counsel Mueller Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian election interference, questioning whether it will “just go on forever” and calling it a waste of money. “Did you ever see an investigation more in search of a crime?” Trump wrote in a tweet. Mueller’s 18-month-old investigation has led to charges against 32 people, including 26 Russians. Four aides to Trump have pleaded guilty to various charges. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Cohen was a “proven liar” and that Trump’s business organization had voluntarily given Mueller the same documents cited in the guilty plea “because there was nothing to hide.”

JULIE JACOBSON (AP)

POLITICS President Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, admitted Thursday he lied to Congress about a Moscow real estate deal he had pursued on Trump’s behalf during the heat of the 2016 Republican campaign. He said he did so to be consistent with Trump’s “political messaging.” Cohen’s guilty plea makes clear that prosecutors believe that Trump, who insisted repeatedly throughout the campaign that he had no business dealings in Russia, was continuing to pursue the project weeks after he had clinched the Republican nomination for president and well after he and his associates have publicly acknowledged. The negotiations about building a Russian Trump Tower continued as late as June 2016 — the same month Trump’s oldest son met in Manhattan with a Kremlin-connected lawyer — even though Cohen told two congressional committees last year that the talks ended that January. Cohen also admitted to lying about his communications with people in Trump’s company and in Russia about the deal and other details. He also discussed the proposal with Trump on multiple occasions and with unidentified members of the president’s family, according to court papers filed by special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating Russian interference in the presidential election and possible coordination with the Trump campaign. The Cohen case was filed in New York a week after Trump and his lawyers provided Mueller

nation+world Overdoses and suicide fuel an alarming drop in American life spans HEALTH Life expectancy in the United States declined again in 2017, the government said Thursday in a bleak series of reports that showed a nation still in the grip of escalating drug and suicide crises. The data continued the longest sustained decline in expected life span at birth in a century, an appalling performance not seen in the U.S. since 1915 through 1918, during World War I and a flu pandemic that killed 675,000. Overall, Americans could expect to live 78.6 years at birth in

2017, down a tenth of a year from the 2016 estimate, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics. Men could anticipate a life span of 76.1 years. Life expectancy for women in 2017 was 81.1 years. Drug overdoses set another annual record in 2017, cresting at 70,237 — up from 63,632 the year before. The opioid epidemic continued to take a relentless toll, with a record 47,600 deaths in 2017 from street drugs such as fentanyl and heroin, as well as prescription narcotics. The geographic disparity in overdose deaths continued in 2017. West Virginia again led the nation with 57.8 deaths per 100,000 people. Nebraska, by

contrast, had 8.1 drug overdose deaths per 100,000 residents. Other factors in the life expectancy decline include a spike in

deaths from flu last winter and increases in deaths from chronic lower respiratory diseases, Alzheimer’s disease, strokes and suicide. Deaths from heart disease continued to level off. Deaths from cancer continued their long, steady downward trend. In a third report, the government detailed the ongoing growth of deaths from suicide, which has worsened since 2006. Most notable is the widening gap between urban and rural Americans. Suicide rates in the most rural counties are now nearly double those in the most urban counties. In urban America, the rate is 11.1 per 100,000 people; in the most rural parts of the country, it is 20 per 100,000.

Aid workers and humanitarian groups have expressed concerns about the unsanitary conditions at the complex.

BUSINESS German authorities raided Deutsche Bank’s headquarters Thursday amid suspicions that at least two of its employees helped clients set up offshore companies to launder hundreds of millions of euros. About 170 officials swooped in on the bank’s offices in Frankfurt and premises in nearby Eschborn and Gross-Umstadt. The investigation emerged from an analysis of documents leaked from tax havens in recent years, including the 2016 “Panama Papers,” said Frankfurt prosecutors’ spokeswoman Nadja Niesen. Analysis of the Panama Papers and other documents “gave rise to suspicion that Deutsche Bank was helping clients set up so-called offshore companies in tax havens and the proceeds of crimes were transferred there from Deutsche Bank accounts” without the bank reporting it, Niesen said. In 2016 alone, more than 900 customers are alleged to have transferred some $351 million to one such company set up in the British Virgin Islands, Niesen said. The Panama Papers are a trove of documents from a law firm that handled shell companies for thousands of rich and powerful clients around the world. While owning a shell company is not illegal, it can be used to hide the beneficial owner of a company or transfer, making it important for laundering dirty money. DAVID RISING AND FRANK JORDANS (AP)

Trump bails on Putin

New health care guidance would undermine ACA

were anxiously awaiting another Trump-Putin sit-down, with some fearing a repeat of last summer’s meeting in Helsinki, where Trump was criticized for appearing too cozy with Putin. The crisis between Russia and Ukraine has continued to deepen. Kiev is hoping Trump will push Putin on the confrontation, which began Sunday when Russia fired on Ukrainian ships trying to enter the Kerch Strait, a crucial waterway separating the Black and Azov seas. Ukraine is banking on its Western allies to provide military support to contain Russia, which Kiev says is preparing to invade Ukrainian territory by land. The latest crisis threatens to significantly worsen the conflict. Fighting in eastern Ukraine between Russian-backed separatists and Ukrainian forces since 2014 has resulted in the deaths of 10,300 people. AMIE FERRIS-ROTMAN AND

HEALTH CARE The Trump administration is urging states to tear down pillars of the Affordable Care Act, demolishing a basic rule that federal insurance subsidies can be used only for people buying health plans in marketplaces created under the law. According to advice issued Thursday by federal health officials, states would be free to redefine the use of those subsidies. They represent the first help the government has ever offered middle-class consumers to afford monthly premiums for private insurance. States could allow the subsidies to be used for health plans the administration has been promoting outside the ACA marketplaces that are less expensive because they provide skimpier benefits and fewer protections. In an even more dramatic change, states could let residents with employer-based coverage set up accounts in which they mingle the federal subsidies with health care funds from their job or personal taxdeferred savings funds to use for premiums or other expenses. Seema Verma, above, head of the Department of Health and Human Services’ Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, said that no state would be allowed to retreat from a popular aspect of the ACA that protects people with pre-existing medical conditions from higher prices or an inability to buy coverage.

POLITICS President Trump on Thursday canceled a one-on-one meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin at the Group of 20 summit in Argentina, a decision he announced just hours after the Kremlin had publicly confirmed the time and date. In a tweet from Air Force One en route to Buenos Aires, Trump blamed the cancellation on Russia’s seizure of Ukrainian ships and sailors in the Black Sea over the weekend. Other top administration officials, including Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, had condemned Russia’s actions, but Trump had equivocated in recent days. Trump had signaled in an interview with The Washington Post on Tuesday that he might forgo meeting Putin after Russia’s naval action sparked global condemnation and a sharp escalation in tensions between Russia and Ukraine. But he seemed to reverse course as he left the White House on Thursday, telling reporters that the meeting “probably” was still on and that he planned to read a “finalized report” on the Black Sea standoff while on the plane. Early in the flight, however, Trump tweeted: “Based on the fact that the ships and sailors have not been returned to Ukraine from Russia, I have decided it would be best for all parties concerned to cancel my previously scheduled meeting in Argentina with President Vladimir Putin.” “I look forward to a meaningful Summit again as soon as this situation is resolved!” Trump added. Trump’s decision was cheered by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko. He later took to Twitter and wrote in English:

President Trump has tabled a highstakes meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“This is how great leaders act!” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters that Trump did not make a decision until talking on board with chief of staff John Kelly and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, as well as by phone with national security adviser John Bolton. Sanders said she was “not aware” if Trump had directly informed Putin of the cancellation but said “there was some back and forth” through other channels, without elaborating. Following Trump’s tweet, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russia’s Tass state news agency that the Kremlin had not been informed separately by the White House of the cancellation. A Putin meeting would have come at a highly sensitive time for Trump politically, with special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe of Russian election interference intensifying back home. Lawmakers on Capitol Hill

Hot topics at G-20 World leaders began arriving in Buenos Aires on Thursday for this week’s G-20 summit. Here’s a look at some of the issues that aren’t officially on the agenda but are expected to grab leaders’ attention. U.S.-China trade war: The global economy is at stake when President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping meet at a dinner in Buenos Aires on Saturday. Trump has threatened to impose new tariffs on imports from China if two leaders can’t reach a truce. Most analysts doubt they will reach a lasting deal this weekend. Saudi tensions: Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is at the summit in the wake of the slaying of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi and allegations that the prince ordered the killing. Argentine legal authorities are considering a request to prosecute bin Salman for alleged crimes against humanity. (AP)

UNBEATEN OMISSION

Why won’t UCF make the playoffs?

COLLEGE FOOTBALL CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Playoff spots at stake

No. 1 Alabama has never missed the College Football Playoff in the format’s four years and appears destined to make it again — win or lose Saturday. No. 2 Clemson should coast against a Pittsburgh team that’s in a title game despite being 7-5. And No. 3 Notre Dame is a lock to get in because it’s not playing. So that likely leaves three teams — No. 4 Georgia, No. 5 Oklahoma and No. 6 Ohio State — vying

for the last spot. Here’s a breakdown of the Power Five conference title games that will bring clarity to the playoff picture. (EXPRESS/AP)

No. 11 Washington vs. No. 17 Utah

Noon Saturday in Arlington, Texas; ABC

4 p.m. Saturday in Atlanta; CBS

8 p.m. Saturday in Charlotte, N.C.; ABC

8 p.m. Saturday in Indianapolis; Fox

What’s at stake: While the rest of the Power Five title games have playoff implications, the Pac-12 game has a more traditional prize: a berth in the Rose Bowl.

What’s at stake: Oklahoma is going for its fourth Big 12 title in a row and can avenge its only loss, a 48-45 defeat in the Red River rivalry game Oct. 6.

What’s at stake: While both teams are eying a playoff berth, at the very least the loser will get a nice consolation prize: a trip to the Sugar Bowl.

What’s at stake: The heavily favored Tigers are seeking to become the first team in the ACC championship game era to win four straight titles.

Matchup to watch: Sooners QB Kyler Murray vs. the Longhorns’ defense. The Big 12’s most efficient passer (306 yards per game, 37 TDs, seven INTs) and seventh-best rusher (71 yards per game, 11 TDs) had 396 total yards in the first meeting. But he also had two key turnovers.

Matchup to watch: Crimson Tide QB Tua Tagovailoa vs. Bulldogs CB Deandre Baker. Tagovailoa is the favorite to win the Heisman after passing for 3,189 yards, with 36 TDs and just two picks. Baker is one of the nation’s best lock-down cornerbacks who forces QBs to look to the other way.

Matchup to watch: Panthers QB Kenny Pickett vs. Tigers’ secondary. Pickett threw for 1,825 yards this season — the fewest for a Pitt passer who has played 10 games since 1996. But Clemson’s pass defense got torched last Saturday, allowing 510 yards passing and five TDs in a 56-35 win over South Carolina.

What’s at stake: Big Ten officials will spend the pregame festivities watching scoreboards to see if the Buckeyes get enough help to claim a playoff spot.

Matchup to watch: Huskies RB Myles Gaskin vs. the Utes’ run defense. Utah brings the Pac-12’s top run defense into the game but will have its hands full with Gaskin, who ran for 143 yards in a 21-7 win over Utah on Sept. 15. The senior is the third-leading rusher in Pac-12 history. Key stat: The Huskies are 18-1 the past three seasons when they have a runner reach 100 yards rushing.

Key stat: The past five games between Texas and Oklahoma have been decided by a combined 25 points — five points a game.

Key stat: Georgia’s last win over Alabama came in 2007, Nick Saban’s first year as the Tide’s coach.

Key stat: Clemson had 18 players make an all-ACC team. Pitt had four.

No. 22 Boise State hosts No. 25 Fresno State in Mountain West title game (7:45 p.m. Sat., ESPN)

When the College Football Playoff selection committee on Tuesday ranked a two-loss Michigan team No. 7, one spot ahead of the 11-0 UCF Knights, it was a signal that there’s no path for coach Josh Heupel, below, and the undefeated AAC team to break into the top four. So why no love for the little guy? Scheduling is the biggest reason. None of UCF’s wins came against a team currently ranked in the top 25. It also doesn’t help the Knights’ case that they will be without star QB McKenzie Milton, who suffered a severe leg injury last week. Still, a New Year’s Six bowl bid is at stake as UCF looks to extend its 24-game winning streak when it hosts the AAC title game against Memphis on Saturday (3:30 p.m., ABC). (EXPRESS)

Matchup to watch: Buckeyes QB Dwayne Haskins vs. Wildcats’ red-zone defense. The Wildcats need to take away big plays from Haskins and the Big Ten’s highestscoring team (43.3 points a game). Northwestern has allowed a league-low 16 red-zone TDs. Key stat: Ohio State was blown out 49-20 at Purdue in its first trip to Indiana this season.

Williams: Redskins united in Foster move

NFL Week 13 preview FANTASY SPOTLIGHT

Broncos RB Phillip Lindsay At Bengals, 1 p.m. Sunday

Over the past two weeks, the rookie has run for 189 yards and three TDs on just 25 carries (7.6 yards per rush). Will he get more touches against a Bengals defense that ranks last in points allowed and 31st in rush defense?

REDSKINS Redskins senior vice president Doug Williams said the franchise’s key decision makers were united in their decision to claim troubled linebacker Reuben Foster on Tuesday, just two days after Foster was released by the 49ers following a weekend arrest on a domestic violence charge. Williams, speaking publicly for the first time about Washington’s decision, said he and the Redskins expected the widespread criticism after they were the only team to put in a claim on Foster, who has been arrested three times this year. The NFL placed Foster on the commissioner’s exempt list Tuesday, meaning he won’t be eligible to play until the league makes a final disciplinary decision in his case. “We knew there was going to be some backlash, and we understand that, and rightfully so,” Williams told Doc Walker on Thursday on The Team 980. Walker asked Williams about a Washington Post report, citing an NFL official with knowledge of the situation, that the Redskins front office’s decision to claim Foster was not unanimous. “When I read that, I was trying to find out who wasn’t united,”

Redskins senior vice president Doug Williams, left, said Thursday that he and the team expected backlash for claiming troubled LB Reuben Foster.

Playmakers practice The Redskins had both Jamison Crowder and Chris Thompson on the practice field for the second consecutive day Thursday, a sign they could return for Monday night’s game vs. the Eagles (8:15. ESPN). Crowder has missed seven games with an ankle injury, while Thompson is recovering from rib injuries that kept him out of six games. (TWP)

Williams said. “This is all the people from the head coach, and myself and [Redskins team president Bruce Allen], and of course the owner. … I don’t know who wasn’t on board.” In a statement released by the

Redskins on Tuesday, Williams said the team had “candid conversations with a number of [Foster’s] ex-Alabama teammates and current Redskins players who were overwhelmingly supportive of us taking this chance.” On Wednesday, defensive lineman Jonathan Allen and safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, two of the five former Alabama players on Washington’s active roster, told reporters that they weren’t asked about Foster. “Well, you know, we didn’t hold a convention,” Williams said when asked about which of Foster’s former Alabama teammates the team consulted. “The two that we did talk to know him very well.” SCOTT ALLEN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Kuznetsov could return Friday vs. Devils GETTY IMAGES

Coming off his first career road victory, the rookie heads to Houston to face a defense that’s allowed just 18.5 points a game during an eight-game winning streak. DE J.J. Watt is tied for second in the NFL with 11.5 sacks.

Capitals center Evgeny Kuznetsov was a full participant in the team’s practice on Thursday, indicating he could return to the lineup for Friday night’s game (7, NBCSWA+) against the New Jersey Devils after missing the past six games with a concussion. Kuznetsov has not been medically cleared yet, though that could come Friday. (TWP)

Wizards play at the 76ers, who are 11-1 at home, on Friday (7 p.m., NBCSWA)

Vs. Chargers, 8:20 p.m. Sunday, NBC

While he’s tied for the NFL lead with 11 TD catches, the 30-year-old is second on his own team in receiving yards and is on pace for his lowest single-season total since 2012. He’s had just three 100-yard games this year.

FEAST OR FAMINE

Patriots QB Tom Brady Vs. Vikings, 4:25 p.m. Sunday, Fox

The 41-year-old has just three TD passes in his past four games and will face a Vikings defense that has allowed the fewest passing TDs (14) in the league. But Brady is 4-0 with a 109.4 passer rating in his career vs. Minnesota.

With QB Joe Flacco (hip) expected to miss his third straight game, Jackson will likely get the call on the road against Atlanta’s 25th-ranked rush defense (123.7 yards allowed per game) Sunday (1 p.m., CBS). ‘Widows’

FOCUS FEATURES

This flick caught my eye from the first trailer, but I couldn’t catch the press screening. I don’t think director Steve McQueen (“12 Years a Slave”) has ever made a bad movie, and Viola Davis leading a bunch of women on a heist seems to be a surefire recipe for success — at least when measured by quality. While the critical buzz has been great, the box office has not. “Widows” didn’t have a strong opening weekend (it took in just over $12 million), but I’ll be throwing some money at it before the year is out.

PARAMOUNT PICTURES

Over 100 new movies a year — which is my average — is certainly more than most people see. Still, I miss a lot. Every year, making the time to see the ones I most regret missing is my end-of-year resolution. Based on the recommendations of friends, colleagues and critics, these are the top five that I really need to catch to round out the films of 2018. I’m planning on knocking these out in the next month. In January, I’ll let you know how many of them lived up to my expectations — and how many I should have left unseen.

‘Annihilation’ Sci-fi? Eh. A February release date? Even more eh. I shrugged off director Alex Garland’s latest (though I loved his 2014 directorial debut “Ex Machina”) and apparently made a mistake. A mistake brought to my attention when a film critic friend of mine would not. Shut. Up. About. It. I kept seeing critics — mostly women — continually arguing for the movie’s greatness, its weirdness, its power. I’m still not sure what it’s about (It’s an alien planet? Or aliens? And there’s a bear?), but I’ll have it checked off the list soon.

‘BlacKkKlansman’

‘The Death of Stalin’

‘Lean on Pete’

I fully planned on seeing this at a press screening, but it fell during my vacation. Then I fully planned on seeing it in the theater, and continued planning on that until it was no longer in theaters. I’m not someone who rushes out to see Spike Lee’s work — he can be wildly uneven — but this one is supposedly his best in years. Plus, who can resist a movie based on the true story of a black cop who infiltrates the Ku Klux Klan? I’ll see it soon. And maybe one day I’ll remember which K’s to capitalize in the title.

A satirical comedy about the scramble for power after the death of Joseph Stalin, this film seemed destined to be one of the movies where I see the title on Netflix three years later, realize I always meant to watch it, then cue up “The Office” once again. It probably would have helped if I watched “Veep” (“Stalin” director and co-writer Armando Iannucci created the HBO show), but I don’t, so it didn’t. So I’m trusting friends and checking out the communist romp ASAP.

“The Rider,” about a rodeo competitor faced with a career-ending injury, was one of the best surprises of my year. And then I guess I decided that one horse-based movie was enough for me? I have no idea. Anyway, the latest from writer-director Andrew Haigh (“45 Years”), about a teenager who becomes pals with an aging racehorse, sounded gag-worthy. Again, friends have convinced me it’s more — much more — than a sappy cousin to “Black Beauty.” Apparently this horse can really run.

New York critics name “Roma” 2018’s best film

The Swedish author Astrid Lindgren is beloved around the world for her bestselling children’s books — most notably “Pippi Longstocking” — but “Becoming Astrid” doesn’t primarily concern itself with how she got to be a famous writer. Centering on the protagonist’s late teens and early 20s, with the extraordinary Alba August in the title role, the engrossing film by Danish director Pernille Fischer Christensen tells the story of Astrid’s affair with a married man. The resulting pregnancy and the birth of her son, Lars, form the spine of this captivating story, which is both a feminist coming-ofage tale and a romance, though not the kind you think.

The ultimate battle royal

Two women hilariously jockey for the queen’s trust in ‘The Favourite’

Bonham Carter, Swank put some pep in ‘55 Steps’

FOX SEARCHLIGHT PHOTOS

FILM REVIEW In “The Favourite,” a deliciously diabolical comedy of ill manners and outre palace intrigue, Olivia Colman plays Queen Anne, who in the 18th century ruled Great Britain while suffering through 17 ill-fated pregnancies, severe illness and not un-consequential wars with Spain and France. Those circumstances are alluded to but not the center of this movie, which focuses on Anne’s relationship with two of her closest female friends: Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough, who became her most intimate confidante; and Abigail Hill, who would ultimately supplant Sarah in the queen’s affections. In this bawdily speculative jape, writers Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara take those real-world outlines and run with them, concocting a story bursting with schemes, subterfuges, sexual antics and sly social commentary worthy of the Restoration era they depict so lavishly. Funny, cynical, extravagant and rapturously vulgar, “The Favourite” puts the lie to such wellheeled dramas as “The Crown” (which Colman will star in soon) and Peter Morgan’s carefully researched biopics. As “The Favourite” opens, Abigail (Emma Stone) is just arriving at Kensington Palace, where she hopes to improve her fortunes with the

Emma Stone is up to no good as a young woman trying to win royal approval in “The Favourite.”

‘The Favourite’ (R, 121 min.)

DIRECTOR: Yorgos Lanthimos STARS: Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz, Nicholas Hoult IN A NUTSHELL: In 18th-century England, a young woman throws Queen Anne’s life for a loop when she arrives seeking work at the palace.

Rachel Weisz bows before the great Olivia Colman, as any reasonable person would do.

help of her cousin, Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz). Unimpressed, Sarah relegates the bedraggled but comely young lady to the scullery, the quicker to return her attentions to the emotionally needy Queen Anne. Soon enough, though, the wide-eyed Abigail

has insinuated herself into the queen’s favor, deploying her native charms and wily intelligence. Directed with relish by Yorgos Lanthimos, “The Favourite” makes the most of the director’s attraction to transgressive, proudly perverse scenarios. Colman gets to the heart of Anne’s physical suffering and deep loneliness, playing her as peevish,

vulnerable, sympathetic and annoying all at the same time. For her part, Stone embraces her own persona as a perpetual ingenue to inhabit Abigail as someone driven less by greed and status than sheer survival. But it’s Weisz’s Sarah who emerges as “The Favourite’s” most fascinating figure, as a woman with a head for figures and an eye for the kill. As diverting as it is to read all manner of historical and present-day allegory into the mischief and machinations of “The Favourite,” Lady Sarah understands most clearly what drives the wordplay, foreplay and foul play swirling around the monarch she serves and is serviced by. “Sometimes,” she notes coolly, “a lady likes to have fun.” ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Comedy Central cancels “Another Period”

Deadline: Stephen Chbosky in talks to direct “Dear Evan Hansen” film

FILM REVIEW “55 Steps” tells two stories. The first is a legal drama based on the true story of Eleanor Riese, a psychiatric patient who, in the late 1980s, sued a San Francisco hospital for the right to refuse medication whose side effects she believed were harming her. The second is the story of the friendship that eventually grew out of her relationship with her lawyer, the patients’ rights attorney Colette Hughes. The second of these two narrative arcs — as brought to vivid life by the pair of fine actresses portraying Eleanor and Colette, Helena Bonham Carter and Hilary Swank — is the more stirring. As Eleanor, Bonham Carter delivers a sweetly oddball performance playing a high-maintenance but fiercely determined grouch who is mostly impossible to like. Swank, for her part, is no picnic either: A former psychiatric nurse who discovered law later in life, her Colette is a largely charmless workaholic. But somehow, these two difficult people are easy to watch, at least on the screen. They are honest to a fault, which is, in the end, their charm. “You know, Eleanor, you’re not gravely disabled,” Colette tells her client and friend. “You’re gravely obnoxious.” To which Eleanor cackles uproariously in reply, as the screen crackles with the acerbic chemistry generated by this oddest of odd couples. ‘Artemis Fowl’

‘The Lion King’

EXPECTED RELEASE: Aug. 9

EXPECTED RELEASE: June 19

SUMMARY: In an annoyingly ambiguous trailer, people who haven’t read the books wonder why somethings or someones now live underground and why it looks like outer space and what the hell is going on. It looks like a young man will save the world, because you definitely want a teenager to be in charge of that. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: In a movie that departs from the “live action” genre in the sense that it looks to be entirely CGI, everyone’s favorite leonine take on “Hamlet” comes back to the big screen in what looks like a frame-by-frame remake of the 1994 original. This includes the voice of James Earl Jones, which is forgivable because it’s James Earl Jones. K.P.K.

@BRASSMAN66, joking after Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke introduced President Trump as “the man who brought Christmas back to America” at the National Christmas Tree Lighting on Wednesday. Zinke made a similar comment at last year’s ceremony, calling Trump “the man who brought ‘Merry Christmas!’ back to our nation’s capital.” As HuffPost pointed out, though, neither the holiday nor its accompanying greeting has ever left.

@KDRAKE521, tweeting about a video in which a crane working on the 160-foot Purdue Bell Tower dropped a clock face, which fell to the ground and shattered. Verdin Clock Company, which was contracted to do the maintenance work, apologized for the incident and said no one was injured. Neil Armstrong, the first person to walk on the moon, was a Purdue University alumnus.

“Nothing fits Kawhi Leonard’s personality more than a pair of New Balance hoop shoes.” @METALFACEJAE, discussing the announcement that the Toronto

Raptors forward signed a multiyear endorsement deal with New Balance, after not extending his contract with Jordan Brand. Fans found Leonard’s move to New Balance — often joked about as being for middle-aged dads — to be a perfect fit for the expressionless player.

Netflix’s announcement that it will be producing a live-action remake of the beloved anime series “Cowboy Bebop.” Anime fans weren’t thrilled by the news, since the writers of the new show are mostly white men, and fans fear that Netflix will also whitewash the cast as it did with its live-action version of the manga series “Death Note.”

“I gotta photoshop myself into a picture with Rihanna immediately!” @LPIZZLE, reacting after fan Bolu Babalola met Michael B. Jordan after tweeting a photoshopped picture of herself with the actor along with a joking story about how they met over the summer and lost touch. After her tweet went viral, Babalola, a writer, went to a Q&A session on “Creed II” and told Jordan she was the girl in the photo, then got a pic with him.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You may have to make a request of a friend that seems to put you in a vulnerable spot, but the truth is very much the opposite. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Your ability to assess a situation quickly and accurately will come in handy all day long. Others flock to you for answers to tricky questions. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You may be required to add things up today without having all pertinent information. Your “guess” will be very close, in fact. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You may find yourself sitting pretty today, as far as a certain workplace situation goes. You are immune from certain ill trends.

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You’ll

be ready very soon to say enough is enough, but until then you’ll want to do all you can to prevail in an impossible situation.

DIFFICULT

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
