Question: Does beer dumped down a drain fuel algae blooms?

Good bathroom manners prove to be this intruder’s undoing

Officials in Cincinnati said a 13-year-old boy trying to kill a bedbug sparked an apartment building fire that displaced eight people and caused $300,000 in damage. The fire was reported around 11 p.m. Tuesday and apparently began when the teen lit a match after dousing a bedbug with alcohol. Six apartment units were damaged but no injuries were reported. The Red Cross was working to find shelter for the displaced. (AP)

Maumee Bay Brewing Company of Toledo, Ohio, is making a batch of green beer called “Algae Blooms” to draw attention to the toxic algae that’s been fouling Lake Erie. The brewery uses city tap water sourced from Lake Erie, but algae outbreaks in recent summers have threatened the water quality. The brewery manager said the new beer — which contains kiwi and powdered green tea — looks contaminated but doesn’t taste like it. (AP)

A man suspected of breaking into a home in Traverse City, Mich., left a big clue: The toilet seat was down. Police said the resident, who lives alone, figured something wasn’t right Saturday. Why? He told police he typically keeps the seat up. Police Chief Jeff O’Brien said a 26-year-old intruder was found passed out in the garage. O’Brien said the stranger appeared to be intoxicated and had taken prescription drugs from the home. (AP)

country. In 2014, the National Bureau of Economic Research ranked the Southern city America’s happiest. Mayor Mike Signer isn’t surprised his city is on the list. “Charlottesville is certainly not perfect, but we are charming, diverse, tolerant, progressive, welcoming, beautiful and one of the world’s truly great cities,” Signer wrote in an email. “Those values made us a target for the bigots who invaded us from 31 states on [Aug. 12]. But they will never change us, or make us any less happy about our city. For any doubters: Come visit.” MARY HUI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

CULTURE Ask people where the happiest Americans live, and chances are Charlottesville, Va., would not be their first answer. In August, the college town became a crucible of ugly forces when hundreds of white supremacists clashed with counter-protesters, leaving one dead and 19 injured. Yet Dan Buettner, the bestselling author of “The Blue Zones Solution,” just named Charlottesville No. 3, behind Boulder, Colo., and Santa Cruz-Watsonville, Calif., on his list of the 25 happiest cities in the country. Buettner, whose book detailed the lifestyle habits of the world’s longest-lived and healthiest people, teamed up with researchers from National Geographic and Gallup. Drawing on interviews in 190 metropolitan areas across the country as part of the GallupSharecare Well-Being Index, they established 15 metrics — including financial security, vacation time and availability of healthy food — to determine the 25 happiest places in the U.S. Their research is detailed in greater length in National Geographic’s November cover story and in Buettner’s newly

Mysterious slaying is talk of Baltimore Conspiracy theories surround fatal shooting of detective last month BALTIMORE The death of a Baltimore homicide detective shot in the head with his own gun two weeks ago has created a feeding frenzy of speculation in a city filled with armchair sleuths and deeply suspicious views of law enforcers. The unsolved Nov. 15 shooting of Detective Sean Suiter is the talk of Baltimore, where residents are dissecting details of the case in offices, on street corners and on social media. It’s a homicide investigation, but the version of events offered by police brass is being increasingly questioned since it came to light that the detective was shot a day before he was set to testify before a federal grand jury probing an elite unit of indicted officers. Police Commissioner Kevin Davis has emphasized that Suiter, whose Baltimore-area funeral procession closed down major roads Wednesday, was not the target of any federal probe and by all accounts was a “stellar detective.” Davis said he understands the “wild possibilities,” but stressed

that the evidence refutes any notion that the slaying in a highcrime neighborhood was “part of any conspiracy.” Suiter “There’s no path that we won’t go down if evidence takes us down that path. But right now, the evidence that’s available to us is indicative of a homicide,” he said. But with the revelation of Suiter’s planned testimony and no arrests even with a $215,000 reward, there appears to be no end in sight to the rumor mill in a city where police officers have had a tense relationship with the majorityblack population for decades. Some people, including gossiping law enforcement officials, have speculated that Suiter might

have shot himself, staging a suicide to look like a murder. Others envision a conspiracy in which Suiter was labeled a traitor by dirty colleagues. Deepening the mystery, court records show that the 18-year police veteran had worked on cases with some of the indicted officers. There are many in Baltimore who have a hard time believing the official version of events about Suiter’s end. “I feel very bad for this man, his family. But it’s also like this where I come from in El Salvador: The story that gets told is not so much the real story,” said Toni Sanchez, who lives near the lot where Suiter became Baltimore’s latest body to fall in a year that has seen so many. MARYLAND In the latest move to root out long-standing corruption in Maryland prisons, state and federal officials announced Thursday the indictments of 26 people, including a correctional officer who served as a high-ranking gang member. The charges include attempted first-degree murder and smuggling contraband like drugs and cellphones into prisons. Sgt. Antoine Fordham, a correctional officer whom authorities described as a high-ranking member of the 8-Trey Crips street gang, was the initial target of the probe and among those indicted. The indictment alleges that Fordham oversaw much of the gang’s drug dealing at a Baltimore intersection. “He told another co-conspirator in a recorded call: ‘I’m going to tell you cuz, the route I’m going, they’re going to have to build a statue out there with my face on it,” Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh said at a news conference. The investigation grew to include additional gang members and another correctional officer, Phillipe Jordan, and other co-conspirators who authorities

Stephen Moyer, the secretary of the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, said other investigations are ongoing. “We have other cases that are coming, and we’re not going to stop until we have pushed every lead that we have about corrupt officers still working for us,” Moyer said at a news conference Thursday. The case is part of an effort to end corruption spanning years in Maryland prisons. If convicted, the indicted members of the conspiracy face three years to life imprisonment. BRIAN WITTE (AP)

Judge removed from bench over witness tampering

Former D.C. power broker ordered to repay $242,000

Virginia House Democrats launch two recount bids

A Virginia judge has been removed from his position after contacting two witnesses in his wife’s federal corruption case. The Supreme Court of Virginia ruled this week that Judge Kurt Pomrenke violated the Virginia Canons of Justice. Pomrenke was removed from the 28th District juvenile and domestic relations bench. Pomrenke was sentenced to two months in jail Thursday and ordered to pay a $1,000 fine after he was found guilty earlier this year on a contempt of court charge in connection with his wife’s case. He is only the second Virginia judge in the past 23 years to be removed by the state Supreme Court. (AP)

A former political power broker in Southeast D.C. must repay more than $240,000 she improperly diverted from a nonprofit that owned and managed a low-income housing complex, a judge has ruled. Rowena Joyce Scott, a minister who until recently was property manager for Park Southern Apartments and board president of the Park Southern Neighborhood Corp., must return $242,605 to the organization, a D.C. Superior Court judge ordered this month. Court documents said Scott lived rent-free at Park Southern and paid herself an excessive salary even as the building fell into disrepair.

Virginia Democrats on Wednesday filed for recounts in two House of Delegates races, as control of the chamber hangs in the balance. Democrat Shelly Simonds, who lost to Del. David Yancey by 10 votes, filed for a recount in the 94th District. And Democrat Donte Tanner, who lost to Del. Tim Hugo by 106 votes, is seeking a recount in the 40th District. Virginia House Democrats have more time to seek a recount in a third contest, the Fredericksburgarea 28th District, where state officials said scores of voters received the wrong ballots and Republican Bob Thomas defeated Democrat Joshua Cole by 82 votes. GOP works on bill holdouts

J. SCOTT APPLEWHITE (AP)

POLITICS Senate Republican leaders wrangled with the last few GOP holdouts Thursday as they pushed toward passing the first major rewrite of the nation’s tax code in more than three decades. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said he expected a final vote late Thursday or early Friday on a $1.4 trillion package that would slash the corporate tax rate, offer more modest cuts for families and individuals and eliminate several popular deductions. Lawmakers would then try to reconcile the Senate package with one passed by the House in the hope of delivering a major legislative accomplishment to President Trump by Christmas. Republicans have cast passage of a tax overhaul as a political imperative to ensure they hold their House and Senate majorities in next year’s midterm elections. “We’re heading down the homestretch,” McConnell told reporters Thursday. Under Senate rules, senators can offer unlimited amendments, setting up the possibility of dozens of votes through Friday morning. In a dramatic roll call that lasted an hour, the package cleared a procedural hurdle that threatened to derail the GOP’s entire tax drive. Democrats forced a vote on whether to return the measure to the Senate Finance Committee so it could be rewritten to not make

Sen. Mitch McConnell, center, and Linda McMahon, left, head of the Small Business Administration, tout the tax bill.

federal deficits larger. After holding out until the last moment, Sens. Bob Corker of Tennessee, Ron Johnson of Wisconsin and Jeff Flake of Arizona eventually joined fellow Republicans to scuttle the Democratic proposal. Had it succeeded, it would have derailed the bill. The dispute was over a ruling by the Senate parliamentarian that a key provision of the bill designed to guard against big deficits would violate Senate rules about what could be in the tax bill. Corker had been pushing to add automatic tax increases in future years if the package doesn’t raise as much revenue as projected. With the provision dead, Corker said senators would change the bill to roll back some

of the tax cuts in future years, regardless of whether tax revenues meet expectations. T he package would add $1 trillion to the budget deficit over the next decade, much less than previously projected, according to a congressional analysis released Thursday. The tax bill would increase economic growth, generating an additional $458 billion in tax revenue, according to the analysis by the nonpartisan Joint Committee on Taxation. The committee previously estimated that the package would add $1.4 trillion to the deficit. The additional revenue is a boost to the bill but is still far short of the $2 trillion promised by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. Two Republican senators,

John McCain of Arizona and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, announced their support for the tax package Thursday. Their support is key because Republicans hold a slim 52-48 majority in the Senate, meaning they can only afford to lose two votes, with Vice President Mike Pence casting the tie-breaker. “It’s clear this bill’s net effect on our economy would be positive,” McCain said. “This is not a perfect bill, but it is one that would deliver much-needed reform to our tax code.” Murkowski said she supports the bill now that it would allow oil drilling in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The provision was tweaked Thursday. MARC Y GORDON AND STEPHEN OHLEMACHER (AP)

Both of those statements are true, so I just keep asking myself, can you love someone who did bad things? Can you still love them?” Silverman said. A revelation like this can be difficult to handle for anyone and even more so when they’re in the public eye and their emotions are on display, said Angela C. Esquivel, co-founder and chief executive of the nonprofit As One Project, a support organization for friends and families of survivors of sexual abuse. “It shakes us to our core when we learn that someone we are close to or we’ve known for a long time has been doing these acts or crimes against other people,” Esquivel said. “It can cause us a feeling of ‘If what I knew before is no longer true, what is true now?’ ” She said people might have different reasons to either keep or end a relationship. MEDIA The visibly shaken TV hosts tried to keep their composure behind the desk as they announced that their colleague Matt Lauer was fired for sexual misconduct allegations. Last week it was Charlie Rose’s coanchors who looked like deer in headlights as they announced accusations against him. Before that, the public saw comedian Sarah Silverman struggling with the news of Louis C.K.’s transgressions. As famous man after famous man is accused of sexual misconduct, the victims who are speaking out bear the brunt of the emotional trauma and professional backlash. But the friends, colleagues and loved ones of the accused are also left to make sense of what happened, sometimes in a very public way. “All we can say is we are heartbroken,” said Lauer’s cohost, Savannah Guthrie, who appeared to be close to tears as she disclosed his firing. “I’m heartbroken. … How do you reconcile your love for someone with the revelation that they have behaved badly?” They are experiencing what is known as “secondary trauma,” experts say, meaning they were not the person allegedly harassed or assaulted, but they experience a deep sense of betrayal from a person they thought they knew. And it raises the question: What does someone do if a friend, colleague or loved one is accused of such a thing? What happens to that relationship? Silverman spoke about it on her Hulu show, “I Love You, America,” when C.K., her close

Lauer issues apology The firing of Matt Lauer, above, again dominated the “Today” show Thursday as co-host Savannah Guthrie read a statement from her former colleague, who was fired this week following sexual misconduct allegations. “Some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterized, but there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed,” the statement read. “I regret that my shame is now shared by the people I cherish dearly.” Two more women came forward to the network after the news initially broke early Wednesday, including one who claims she was sexually assaulted by Lauer in his office in 2001. members, for example might have more incentive to hold onto a relationship, while someone who always thought the man was creepy might be happy to let it go. “Are relationships salvageable is such a tough question,” Esquivel said. “Depending on the relationship, both parties might want to salvage what’s there. [But] there definitely would be a great barrier.” She said there’s not a wrong way to approach it. “Shunning the person that did this might be helpful for some, and for others it might not be,” she said. When Charlie Rose’s co-anchor Gayle King was on air the morning after The Washington Post revealed that eight women had accused him of sexual harassment, she was candid about her feelings. “I really am reeling,” King said. “I got one hour and 42 minutes of sleep last night. Both my son and my daughter called me; Oprah [Winfrey] called me and said, ‘Are you OK?’ I am not OK.” ALLISON KLEIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

ENTERTAINMENT Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons on Thursday stepped down from the companies he founded, including Def Jam Recordings, amid a new sexual misconduct allegation against him. In an essay published Thursday by The Hollywood Reporter, screenwriter Jenny Lumet wrote that the Def Jam co-founder forced her to go to his apartment in 1991 and then have sex with him. Her account follows last week’s Los Angeles Times story in which Keri Claussen Khalighi alleged that when she was a 17-year-old model in 1991, Simmons sexually assaulted her while director Brett Ratner watched. While Simmons, 60, had strongly disputed Khalighi’s account, he announced Thursday his exit from his various companies in light of Lumet’s essay. “While her memory of that evening is very different from mine, it is now clear to me that her feelings of fear and intimidation are real,” Simmons said in a statement to THR. “I don’t want to be a distraction so I am removing myself from the businesses that I founded.” Also Thursday, HBO distanced itself from Simmons and scrubbed his name from a standup comedy series he helped produce. HBO said it will go ahead with Friday’s airing of “All Def Comedy” but will edit out any link to Simmons in the wake of allegations by Lumet. (AP/TWP)

nation+world Reports: White House is prepared to replace the secretary of state POLITICS The White House has readied a plan to oust embattled Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and replace him with CIA Director Mike Pompeo, who has become one of the most personally loyal and politically savvy members of President Trump’s national security team, two administration officials confirmed Thursday. The plan, hatched by White House chief of Staff John Kelly, is expected to be set in motion over the next few weeks, and it has broad support within Trump’s inner circle, the officials said. But

it was unclear whether Trump had signed off on the plan; the president has been known to change his mind about personnel before finalizing decisions. Under the plan, Pompeo would probably be replaced at the CIA by Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., one of Trump’s most steadfast defenders and a confidant to some leading members of the foreign policy team, according to the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the White House has not publicly announced the moves. The New York Times was the first to report Kelly’s plan. Asked during a Thursday morning meeting whether he wants Tillerson to remain as secretary of state, Trump told

In an earlier statement, Sanders said: “There are no personnel announcements at this time.” State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Tillerson is going about his job as usual, including two visits to the White House on Thursday. Science has finally settled the age-old question: Who’s smarter, dogs or cats? Researchers at Vanderbilt University counted the number of cortical neurons in the brains of dogs and cats and found that canines packed significantly more neurons than felines, Fortune reports. Dogs have about 530 million cortical neurons, while cats have around 250 million, according to the paper. Humans have around 16 billion. (EXPRESS)

NORTH KOREA | This image is one of dozens released Thursday by the North Korean government that shows the Hwasong-15 intercontinental ballistic missile, which North Korea claims can reach Washington, D.C. Compared with previous test missiles, rocket experts say the one launched Wednesday is bigger, more advanced and comes with a domestically made mobile launcher that makes it harder to pre-emptively destroy. But experts say it might not have the power to go much farther than the West Coast if it is loaded down with a real nuclear warhead.

LONDON The British revolt against President Trump swelled Thursday with Parliament members openly deriding him and Britain’s prime minister standing by her denunciations of Trump’s retweets of a fringe group’s anti-Muslim videos. Prime Minister Theresa May, above, blasted Trump for crossing a line by posting the inflammatory videos on his Twitter page Wednesday — and then warning May to essentially mind her own business and focus on Islamist terrorism instead of him. British officials were shocked at the personal nature of the tweet and the suggestion that Trump was boasting — even gloating — that the U.S. has had no recent terror attacks while Britain has suffered a string of deadly assaults. Trump tweeted Wednesday: “@Theresa_May, don’t focus on me, focus on the destructive Radical Islamic Terrorism that is taking place within the United Kingdom. We are doing just fine!” Trump originally had the wrong Twitter handle for May. London Mayor Sadiq Khan, the first Muslim to hold the office, said Britain should withdraw an invitation for Trump to visit. But Home Secretary Amber Rudd said Britain’s relationship with the U.S. is bigger than one president — and that important trade and security and intelligence efforts are ongoing. Pelosi to Conyers: Resign your seat

Democrat leader says there is zero tolerance for sexual misconduct POLITICS The top Democrat in the House on Thursday called on Michigan Rep. John Conyers to resign in the face of multiple accusations of sexual misconduct. Conyers’ lawyer swiftly rejected the request, saying Nancy Pelosi “sure as hell won’t be the one to tell the congressman to leave.” House Minority Leader Pelosi called the claims against Conyers, 88, “very credible” and “serious,” saying he should step down. Conyers, the longest-serving member of Congress, was elected in 1964. Pelosi said she had prayed for Conyers, who has been hospitalized in Detroit for a stress-related illness, a family spokesman said. “However,” she said, “Congressman Conyers should resign.” Conyers’ attorney, Arnold Reed, strongly dismissed the growing clamor from not only Pelosi but also other Democrats for Conyers to step aside. Conyers, who has insisted on his innocence, gave up his seat as the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee this past Sunday. The dramatic call from Pelosi came hours after a former aide publicly accused Conyers of sexual harassment, telling NBC’s

Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., 88, was hospitalized, his family said. He has insisted on his innocence.

“Today” show that she was fired for rejecting his advances. Marion Brown, 61, said Conyers propositioned her for sex multiple times over more than a decade. She initially told her story to BuzzFeed News on condition of anonymity, saying she had settled a complaint with Conyers in 2015, according to her attorney. Brown broke a confidentiality agreement to tell her story to “Today,” saying she stayed on the job in part because she needed to support her family. Pelosi on Sunday had argued that Conyers deserved the due process of an Ethics Committee investigation. On Thursday, she said, “Zero tolerance means consequences — for everyone.” ANDREW TAYLOR AND COREY WILLIAMS (AP)

Rep. Joe Barton, Texas’ longest-tenured member of Congress, said Thursday Barton that he won’t seek re-election. Before Thanksgiving, a naked selfie of Barton, 68, was posted online and a conservative activist released past messages of a sexual nature from him. Barton apologized but also suggested he could be the victim of online exploitation by a woman with whom he’d had a relationship. The Republican was first elected to Congress in 1984. (AP)

COLLEGE FOOTBALL | CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Last hurdles remaining

Playoff contenders and Heisman hopefuls have one weekend left to make their cases

PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIP

BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP

SEC CHAMPIONSHIP

No. 10 USC vs. No. 12 Stanford

No. 3 Oklahoma vs. No. 11 TCU

No. 2 Auburn vs. No. 6 Georgia

8 p.m. Friday in Santa Clara, Calif., ESPN

12:30 p.m. Saturday in Arlington, Texas, Fox

4 p.m. Saturday in Atlanta, CBS

Storyline: With a playoff bid out of reach for both the Trojans (10-2) and the Cardinal (9-3), this game comes down to in-state bragging rights and individual legacies.

Storyline: After a six-year absence, the Big 12 is reintroducing a title game. The Sooners (11-1) need a win to cement their playoff berth. The Horned Frogs (10-2) get a shot to play spoiler and avenge a 38-20 road loss Nov. 11.

Storyline: The Bulldogs (11-1) were No. 1 when Auburn (10-2) shellacked them 40-17 three weeks ago. Repaying Auburn could boost Georgia into the playoff, but only if the committee thinks the Bulldogs are more deserving than Alabama.

Player to watch: Baker Mayfield probably cares more about quarterbacking Oklahoma into the playoff, but a poor game could weaken his stranglehold on the lead for the Heisman.

Players to watch: Tigers QB Jarrett Stidham hit 75 percent of his passes and ran for a TD against Alabama. Georgia’s Jake Fromm completed just 46.4 percent of his passes in the loss to Auburn.

AP AND GETTY IMAAGES

Players to watch: Before he likely leaves for the NFL draft, QB Sam Darnold can deliver USC its first victory in a Pac-12 title game. Stanford junior Bryce Love needs 152 yards rushing to reach 2,000 and improve his Heisman candidacy.

No. 8 Ohio State vs. No. 4 Wisconsin

Noon Saturday in Orlando, Fla., ABC

8 p.m. Saturday in Charlotte, N.C., ABC

8 p.m. Saturday in Indianapolis, Fox

Storyline: While each appears poised to snare a shinier job, UCF’s Scott Frost and Memphis’ Mike Norvell can motivate their players with the prospect of winning a place in a marquee bowl. The Knights (11-0) and Tigers (10-1) rank No. 1 and No. 2 in scoring at 48.3 and 47.0 points per game.

Storyline: The Hurricanes’ renaissance came crashing down last week with a 24-14 loss to Pitt, but Miami (10-1) would have a strong argument for a playoff spot if it upsets defending national champion Clemson (11-1), which is going for a third straight ACC crown.

Storyline: Ohio State (10-2) lost at home to Oklahoma and on the road to Iowa, but the committee loves big-name schools, so the Buckeyes could snatch Wisconsin’s spot with a win. The Badgers (12-0) could dispel criticism of their schedule with a blowout victory.

Players to watch: Sophomore McKenzie Milton averages 10.3 yards per attempt for UCF. Only Mayfield’s mark (11.8) is better. Tony Pollard has returned four kickoffs for Memphis touchdowns.

Players to watch: Expect Clemson defensive end Clelin Ferrell, who has 8.5 sacks, to harass Miami quarterback Malik Rosier, who was briefly benched after a bevy of errant throws at Pitt.

Players to watch: Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor (1,806 yards rushing) is a Heisman dark horse. QB J.T. Barrett (knee) is cleared to play, Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer said. GABE HIATT (EXPRESS)

College Football Playoff semifinal matchups will be announced Sunday (noon, ESPN)

College Football Playoff committee members dropped Alabama (11-1) to No. 5 after a loss to Auburn left the Crimson Tide out of the SEC championship. It would be nearly impossible to defend vaulting Alabama over Clemson, Auburn, Oklahoma or Wisconsin if they all win conference titles. Alabama’s hopes hinge on at least one among Clemson, Oklahoma and Wisconsin losing. An Oklahoma loss probably helps QB Jalen Hurts, below, and Co. the most, since 10-2 TCU is buried at No. 11 in the rankings. Alabama is still hurt by the absence of high-end victories. It knocked off 9-3 LSU, 8-4 Mississippi State and 9-3 Fresno State, but its openingweek win over Florida State was devalued by the Seminoles’ struggles. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Eagles’ next two games could be illuminating

NFL Week 13 preview FANTASY SPOTLIGHT

WR Marvin Jones, Lions at Ravens, 1 p.m. Sunday, Fox

Detroit (6-5) needs to play gutsy to stay in the wild-card hunt. That means taking deep shots to Jones, who had a monster game last week (109 yards and two TDs). But he does face the NFL’s No. 2 passing defense in Baltimore (6-5).

Road contests against Seahawks and Rams will be team’s top tests

TALL TASK

SS Micah Hyde, Bills vs. Patriots, 1 p.m. Sunday, CBS

CHRIS SZAGOLA (AP)

ANALYSIS The Eagles, by record and by appearance, have been the best team in the NFL this season. They are 10-1, and no opponent in November came within three touchdowns of them. But we may not know how good they are yet, and the next two weeks will provide the fullest reveal. Philadelphia spent last Sunday against the Bears performing elaborate group celebrations and boosting Carson Wentz’s MVP candidacy. They are destroying opponents. What they have not done, through no fault of their own, is beat many good teams. The Eagles have only one win against a team that owns a winning record, which came when they downed the Panthers 28-23 in Week 6. Their only other game against a team that’s now above .500 was a 27-20 loss at Kansas City in Week 2. After mostly dominating since then, the Eagles face their toughest tests in the next two weeks. They play at Seattle (7-4) on Sunday night (8:30, NBC) and visit the Rams (8-3) a week a later. Philadelphia’s dominance leads to a milestone of sorts. The Seahawks haven’t been an underdog of more than three points at home

Carson Wentz, above, the No. 2 draft pick in 2016, will face Russell Wilson on Sunday and Jared Goff, the first pick in 2016, the following week.

since 2012. Philadelphia opened as a four-point favorite. Coach Doug Pederson has tried to tamp down the hype surrounding the Eagles. On Monday, a day after his team beat the Bears 31-3, Pederson was asked what stood out to him from the game. “Besides the 11 penalties and four fumbles?” he replied. A West Coast trip will provide an obvious reason for focus. The Seahawks will be missing cornerback Richard Sherman and safety Kam Chancellor with injuries, but they will be a battletested, desperate team. Pederson pointed out that the Seahawks play their best late in the season. Since 2012, the Seahawks are 17-5 in December games.

After the Eagles play Seattle, they’ll practice for a week in L.A. in preparation for a showdown of young quarterbacks. Wentz, the second pick in the 2016 draft, will face Jared Goff, the No. 1 pick. They’ll meet in a game that could be heavy with playoff-seed implications. The Eagles have little reason to view the next two weeks as a season-defining stretch. In the NFL, no wins come easy. “For us, there’s nothing to measure,” safety Malcolm Jenkins said, per ESPN.com. “We are our measuring stick.” For the rest of us, the next two games bring extra reason to study Philadelphia. GREEN BAY’S HOPE

Rodgers could return for last three games Last Sunday night before a game in Pittsburgh, Aaron Rodgers showed how far he’s come since breaking his collarbone Oct. 15. Buffalo (6-5) has allowed the second-fewest touchdown passes in the NFL (10). Tom Brady has that many in the past three weeks. Hyde may have to cover Rob Gronkowski as well as several receiving backs on the Pats (9-2).

Coach Hue Jackson said Thursday that Cleveland (0-11) is starting the reinstated wideout in his first game since Dec. 2014. Gordon reportedly is sober and in shape, but a layoff that long seems tough to shake off.

HERO WORLD CHALLENGE

Tiger feels fresh with 3-under start in return

PATRICK SEMANSKY (AP)

MEN’S BASKETBALL Anthony Cowan Jr., Kevin Huerter and Justin Jackson were celebrated last season as the first freshman trio to start multiple games together in the modern era of the men’s basketball program at Maryland, but by the middle of February, each one of them had hit a wall. Fatigue set in. Shooting percentages dipped. Defense lagged. This offseason, they each promised they’d break through any such barriers as sophomores. That is why coach Mark Turgeon appeared comfortable playing each of the three for 37 minutes in a 72-70 loss at Syracuse on Monday night. It was the most combined minutes the trio had played together, and it came during their third game in four days. The workload is significant in light of the Big Ten’s unprecedented basketball schedule. The league’s decision to play its conference tournament beginning Feb. 28, a week earlier than normal, in order to stage it at Madison Square Garden has caused a crunch. To accommodate, each Big Ten team will open conference play this weekend with one home and one road game in a three-day span. That comes on the heels of travel to tournaments over Thanksgiving. Maryland (6-2) will host Purdue (6-2) in both teams’ league openers on Friday night (7, BTN),

Maryland has increased the workload of sophomore Kevin Huerter, center.

then travel to Illinois to play Sunday — the Terrapins’ fifth game in four states over 10 days. “The schedule is unique,” Turgeon said. “The two league games here in December was kind of the [Big Ten] coaches’ idea. I was practicing on Christmas day last year. I begged the Big Ten that I would never have to do that again.” Maryland will have a comfortable holiday break — it will play two games, against Catholic and Farleigh Dickinson, between Dec. 10 and Dec. 28 and will resume conference play against Penn State on Jan. 2 — but until then, Turgeon and his staff must manage its roster and hope its younger players do not burn out.

Part of the maintenance has been shorter practices, which are unusual so early in the season. Turgeon watched Cowan, Huerter and Jackson struggle with consistency late last season, but he didn’t have the depth to sit them. The coach doesn’t worry as much about this season’s star freshmen, guard Darryl Morsell and power forward Bruno Fernando, hitting a wall because his bench can go nine or 10 players deep. This Maryland team practices harder than last year’s rendition, Huerter said, which has largely been due to the emotional intensity of Fernando and Morsell. But both have had to overcome injuries. Fernando sat out three weeks shortly before the season

with an ankle, and Morsell suffered a hamstring injury in a win over Jackson State on Nov. 20. Neither has missed a game, but Turgeon has been able to nurse Morsell. His hamstring improved with rest, and he was able to give Turgeon 25 minutes in the loss to the Orange after playing just four in a win over New Mexico. Morsell, who was named Big Ten freshman of the week last month, has already experienced the swells that come with a college basketball season. This is unlike any season the Big Ten will ever play, but he knows no different. “I’m taking it day by day,” Morsell said. “I’m getting better every day.” ROMAN STUBBS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

LOUISVILLE LAWSUIT

Pitino seeks $38.7M from school

Hall of Fame basketball coach Rick Pitino has sued the University of Louisville Athletic Association for $38.7 million. The suit filed Thursday claims the ULAA breached his contract by placing him on unpaid leave without notice and firing him last month with no legally justified “cause.” Pitino was fired Oct. 16, weeks after Louisville said it was named in a federal bribery probe. Pitino, who is not named in the complaint, denied knowing of alleged bribes to recruits. (AP)

Tiger Woods looked a lot better in his return to golf than he did when he left. Playing for the first time since his fourth back surgery, Woods returned from a 10-month layoff with a 3-under 69 on a breezy Thursday in the Bahamas that left him three shots behind Tommy Fleetwood after the opening round of the Hero World Challenge. “For me, I thought I did great,” Woods said with a smile. Unlike a year ago, when Woods ended a 15-month hiatus from his ailing back, he didn’t show any fatigue at the end of his round or make any big numbers. (AP)

Juliette Danielle (Ari Graynor) isn’t quite ready for her close-up in “The Disaster Artist.”

‘The Swindlers’

A24

Unrated, 117 min.

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

Just say OK: This is the realest scene in ‘Disaster Artist’ “The Disaster Artist” is so unbelievable that it has to be real, as no screenwriter could pull something this bizarre out of his or her brain. The film tells the story of the making of another film, 2003’s “The Room,” a spectacular flop until it took its place among the so-bad-they’re-good cult classics of American cinema. “The Disaster Artist” follows “The Room’s” writerdirector-producer-star Tommy Wiseau (James Franco, who also directs) and his slightly bewildered friend Greg Sestero (Dave Franco) as they meet, set out for L.A. to achieve stardom and end up being a part of the uniformly terrible “The Room.” I haven’t seen “The Room,”

but it seems to be about a guy named Johnny (Wiseau) and his buddy Mark (Sestero) who … do stuff? And Johnny has a girlfriend, Lisa (Juliette Danielle, played in “The Disaster Artist” by Ari Graynor), who cheats on him? And then he shoots himself, and I guess that’s the end? It’s because “The Disaster Artist” is so funny that one scene stands out as deeply uncomfortable; it’s the filming of the sex scene with Danielle and Wiseau. Danielle was promised a closed set. Wiseau doesn’t give her that. Then he repeatedly calls her body disgusting, basically hops on top of her without clearing it with her (a big no-no) and swaggers around the set naked save for the garment that actors often wear to conceal their business. (Picture a beige tube sock and you’ve got

Netflix renews “Mindhunter” for Season 2

the idea.) Sestero and the script supervisor (Seth Rogen) protest on Danielle’s behalf, only to be shouted down by Wiseau. Through it all, she’s insisting that it’s fine, it’s fine. Honestly, her saying it’s OK while she clutches the sheet to herself might be the most believable thing in the movie. Because women do it every day. I saw “The Disaster Artist” a week or so after the accusations of sexual harassment and abuse started rolling out in Hollywood, when it seemed every hour a different man “everyone knew about” finally became really known. That was (is) also the time that brought the constant, cruel fixation on why didn’t she come forward sooner, why didn’t she get a different job, why didn’t she just tell him to STOP.

‘The Disaster Artist’ (R, 98 min.)

DIRECTOR: James Franco STARS: James Franco, Dave Franco, Seth Rogen, Alison Brie, Ari Graynor IN A NUTSHELL: A comedic look at the making of Hollywood outsider Tommy Wiseau’s cult-classic disasterpiece “The Room.”

This one scene shows why: Danielle is a new actress who just got a part in a movie. She consented to nudity and simulated sex. She didn’t realize until she was at her most vulnerable that her consent led to something that was now being forced upon her — which meant she now questioned what, exactly, did she consent to? Speaking up means stopping filming for hours, possibly days, and that means her co-workers don’t get paid. Speaking up also means she goes on a “difficult to work with” list, which is the kiss of death for an actress, up there with having the audacity to age. She agrees to something she doesn’t want not solely because she wants more, but because she wants to keep what little she already has. The scene is a microcosm of what women in Hollywood and in plenty of other industries have only whispered among ourselves, if we’ve spoken about it at all. Sometimes we know something is just not right — but to protect our career, it’s best to just lie back and take it. For more movie musings, follow Kristen on Twitter: @kpagekirby

Jenny Slate to publish book of feminist essays and fables in 2019

With its jazz-funk score and trust-no-one scenario, “The Swindlers” is an entertaining if mostly routine con-game thriller set in South Korea. Director Jang Chang-won depicts a corruption scandal that reaches all the way to a leading presidential candidate. “The Swindlers” is grounded in true events, and shifts from real-world outrage to a payoff so tailormade for the film that it even teases a sequel. MARK JENKINS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘The Divine Order’ Unrated, 97 min.

“The Divine Order,” which revisits how women in Switzerland secured the right to vote in 1971, zeroes in on an unlikely hero: Nora (Marie Leuenberger), a quiet village housewife who ends up leading a political cause. “The Divine Order” is far from perfect, but it still holds power, mostly thanks to Leuenberger’s arresting, self-contained performance. She’s dangerously in love ‘Thelma’ tackles familiar — yet timely — themes of sex and spirituality

A peeping Tom story unravels in ‘Voyeur’

THE ORCHARD PHOTOS

FILM REVIEW With its nods to gothic horror, female sexual awakening and psycho-supernatural spookiness, “Thelma” joins a spate of recent films treading similar terrain, including “Raw,” “The Witch” and “The Babadook.” The title character, a college student in Norway, begins to experience strange physical seizures when she’s confronted with desires considered taboo by her overprotective Christian parents. Whether Thelma is the victim of malign forces beyond her control or the Scandinavian equivalent of horror heroine Carrie is the central question in this superbly controlled, if derivative, variation on a familiar theme. Directed by Joachim Trier (“Oslo, August 31st,” “Louder Than Bombs”) from a script he wrote with Eskil Vogt, “Thelma” is gorgeous to look at, its widescreen vistas taking in serene frozen lakes, a subdued college campus and a possibly haunted house with quiet, observant equanimity. Portrayed in a skillfully restrained performance by Eili Harboe, Thelma is a compelling but oddly impassive character, her isolation punctured by a passing encounter with Anja (Kaya Wilkins), a friendly classmate who introduces Thelma to the joys of wine, cigarettes and sex. Although the physical and

Thelma (Eili Harboe) is confronted with desires that are considered taboo.

‘Thelma’ (Unrated, 116 min.) DIRECTOR: Joachim Trier STARS: Eili Harboe, Kaya Wilkins, Henrik Rafaelsen IN A NUTSHELL: This Norwegian film follows a woman who finds out her seizures are related to supernatural powers triggered by sexual feelings.

spiritual conflicts roiling beneath “Thelma” lend themselves to lurid expressionism, Trier creates his mood with far more discipline, kitting out his production in neutral tones of beige, light gray and ivory that reflect the characters’ attempts to mute and muffle what’s happening under the surface. (He does a magnificent job of setting up the film’s uneasy tone in a shocking opening scene whose origins

finally become clear as Thelma’s backstory is filled in.) Punctuated by magical-realist dream sequences and a protracted session with a neurologist, who performs weird tests with blinking lights, the film builds up a steadily more discomfiting sense of disquiet, culminating in a sequence rife with ambiguity and mixed feelings. With its debt to Stephen King

and Ingmar Bergman never less than obvious, “Thelma” still manages to exert its own subtle power. As a hushed, haunting portrait of a young woman reconciling daughterly duty and her own incipient power, “Thelma” feels like a stylish, timely allegory for the present moment. Some stories bear repeating, even if they’ve been told before. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Political dramas to reach an apex

USA Network is developing a miniseries about former President Ronald Reagan. The currently untitled drama, produced by Reagan’s daughter, Patti Davis, will “explore his early days as a lifeguard, time in Hollywood and his victories and failures as a president,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. This is the first project about Reagan to be authorized by a family member. A release date has yet to be announced. (EXPRESS) “The Andy Griffith Show” actor Jim Nabors dies at age 87 after battling health issues

FILM A pair of filmmakers thought they’d be capturing celebrated writer Gay Talese taking a literary victory lap in their new documentary. Instead, they got a journalistic car crash. In “Voyeur,” Myles Kane and Josh Koury explore the 30-year relationship between Gerald Foos, a former Colorado motel owner who spied on his guests, and Talese, known for his novelistic profiles and bespoke suits. The Netflix film, out Friday, follows the now 85-year-old Talese, who met Foos in 1980, as he reports and writes about his creepy friend decades later for the 2016 book, “The Voyeur’s Motel” — only to see the story fall apart after publication when Foos’ account unravels. Reputations are at stake — especially for Talese, who fears he’ll be known as a liar. “Here are these two guys who met half a lifetime ago and here they are, 35-plus years later,” Kane says. “What’s driving both of them, for different reasons, is they’re both desperately wanting to define their legacies, the way they see themselves and the way they want to be remembered.” It’s a fascinating look at fascinating men, even if Kane and Koury didn’t anticipate catching it all in real time. “If it turns in a direction that you couldn’t have expected, that’s usually a good sign that real life is unfolding,” says Kane. “It’s almost always better than what you could of conceived of.” MARK KENNEDY (AP)

One day I was feeling kind of down and out of it. Ms. Sonja could tell I needed uplifting. She handed me Express and said ‘good morning’ like always, but this day was different. I reached out and she gave me the biggest hug and it made my day. Her nickname for me is Huggy Bear!

@CHOPLOGIK, tweeting a mashup between “This Is Just to Say,”

William Carlos Williams’ well-known poem about eating plums from an icebox, and Carly Rae Jepsen’s 2012 song “Call Me Maybe.” The poem is often parodied online, but recently, Twitter users have been rewriting the short verses into popular songs. @CrillFactor reworked the poem into the song “All Star,” by Smash Mouth: “hey now/you’re an icebox/get your plums on/so/sweet.”

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
