Imagine what you could dig up from the set of ‘The Godfather’

The only worker was asleep and there were no other customers at 2 a.m., so Alex Bowen took charge of his own meal last week at a Waffle House in West Columbia, S.C. Bowen chronicled with selfies on Facebook how he made his own bacon cheesesteak. He said he “even scraped the grill when I was done.” He returned to pay later. A Waffle House statement praised his cooking but said patrons shouldn’t go behind the counter. (AP)

A newspaperman’s story FILM The White House is hostile to the press, public figures misbehave and a vital Washington Post is at the center of the national conversation. Think any of those things are new? HBO’s film about the legendary Post editor Ben Bradlee proves otherwise. “The Newspaperman: The Life and Times of Ben Bradlee,” which debuts today at 8 p.m. on the cable network, feels strikingly contemporary as it follows the editor through his Boston upbringing, friendship with President John F. Kennedy and leadership through the release of the Pentagon Papers and the Watergate scandal that took down President Richard Nixon.

In a timely HBO doc, Ben Bradlee, the iconic Post editor, tells his tale

An HBO documentary profiles the late Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee.

It’s part of a resurgence of attention for Bradlee, who is portrayed by Tom Hanks in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming movie “The Post.” “[Bradlee] just lived life in the moment — a very large life — and was there for some of the most important moments of the

second half of the 20th century,” says film director John Maggio. Bradlee himself narrates the film. He died in 2014, but Maggio unearthed an audio book that Bradlee had recorded in 1994. “So much of his personality was in his bearing, his presence. I wanted that to be in the film,”

Maggio says. The film doesn’t gloss over difficult or controversial aspects of Bradlee’s life. He was married three times, and the first two didn’t end pleasantly. The film spends considerable time on Janet Cooke’s fake story about a child heroin user, the biggest blot on his record at the Post. Bradlee’s close friendship with Kennedy is explored, complete with footage of the men and their wives enjoying a weekend together only days before JFK’s assassination in 1963. It’s hard to conceive of a president and a reporter with such a relationship; Bradlee was Washington bureau chief of Newsweek at the time. Hard to imagine, and hard to justify, too: The film quotes veteran PBS journalist Jim Lehrer saying, “You can’t be a friend of the president and a reporter, too.” DAVID BAUDER (AP)

Pineapple and Pearls chef/owner Aaron Silverman told Washingtonian the increase will improve quality of life for staff and allow more creativity in the kitchen, giving diners more “premium, rare and unusual pairings.” (EXPRESS)

The Charlottesville Police Department was ill prepared, not properly trained and devised a “flawed operational plan” for the white supremacist rally that took place Aug. 12, according to an independent report commissioned by the Virginia city and released Friday. The report, prepared by Timothy Heaphy, a former U.S.

Commissioner asks FBI to take case of slain officer

A fourth suspect has been arrested in the killings of two teens found dead in a car in Montgomery County the night before their high school graduation. Police said Rony Alexander Galicia, 25, of Germantown, Md., was arrested Friday and charged with two counts of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Police have said a 911 caller reported the sound of shots fired the night of June 5. Responding officers found Shadi Adi Najjar, 17, and Artem Ziberov, 18, with apparent gunshot wounds in a car in Montgomery Village. Both died at the scene. Police said DNA at the crime scene belonged to Galicia. (AP)

Trump lashes out at the FBI

weekendd re win PALO ALTO, CALIF.

President again denies he called for an end to Flynn investigation

GETTY IMAGES

POLITICS President Trump launched a fresh attack Sunday on the credibility of his own FBI, responding to revelations that an FBI agent was removed from special counsel Robert Mueller’s team investigating Russian election meddling because of anti-Trump text messages. Two days after his former national security adviser Michael Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI, Trump again denied that he directed FBI Director James Comey to stop investigating Flynn. The Republican president offered a running Twitter commentary Sunday amid renewed focus on Mueller’s probe and Flynn’s decision to cooperate with the investigation as part of his plea agreement. Democrats said the developments suggested growing evidence of coordination between Trump’s circle and Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election. California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said the panel is beginning to see “the putting together of a case of obstruction of justice” against Trump. In a series of tweets, Trump questioned the direction of the law enforcement agency and wrote that after Comey, whom Trump fired in May, the FBI’s reputation is “in Tatters — worst in History!” Trump vowed to “bring it back to greatness.” The president also retweeted a post saying new FBI Director Chris Wray “needs to clean house.” The president seized on reports that a veteran FBI counterintelligence agent was removed from Mueller’s team last summer after

the discovery of an exchange of text messages that were viewed as potentially anti-Trump. The agent, Peter Strzok, had also worked on the investigation of Democrat Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server. Peter Carr, a spokesman for Mueller, said Mueller removed Strzok from the team “immediately upon learning of the allegations.” Carr would not elaborate on the nature of the messages. Trump tweeted Sunday: “Tainted (no, very dishonest?) FBI ‘agent’s role in Clinton probe under review.’ Led Clinton Email probe.” In a separate tweet, he wrote: “Report: ‘ANTI-TRUMP FBI AGENT LED CLINTON EMAIL PROBE’ Now it all starts to make sense!” Strzok’s removal almost certainly reflected a desire to insulate the investigators from any claims of political bias or favoritism. Trump and many of his supporters have at times sought to discredit the integrity of the investigation, in part by claiming a close relationship between Mueller and Comey and by pointing to political contributions

ABC suspends Ross President Trump on Sunday lashed out at ABC News, two days after an erroneous report by Brian Ross, left. Ross had incorrectly reported that during the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump had directed Michael Flynn to make contact with Russian officials before the election. Later on Friday, Ross gave a “clarification,” saying Trump had actually asked Flynn to make contact with Russia after the election. ABC News suspended Ross for four weeks without pay. Many Trump supporters linked Ross’ report to the Dow Jones industrial average briefly falling 350 points Friday. On Sunday, Trump called for those hurt by the market drop to “consider hiring a lawyer and suing ABC for the damages this bad reporting has

to Democrats made by some lawyers on the team. Mueller’s investigation has so far netted charges against four people, with the most recent

criminal case brought Friday when Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his conversations with the Russian ambassador. On Saturday, Trump tweeted that he “had to fire General Flynn because he lied to the Vice President and the FBI. He has pled guilty to those lies. It is a shame because his actions during the transition were lawful. There was nothing to hide!” The tweet suggested that Trump was aware when the White House dismissed Flynn on Feb. 13 that he had lied to the FBI, which had interviewed him weeks earlier. Comey has said Trump the following day brought up the Flynn investigation in private at the White House and told him he hoped Comey could “let this go.” Amid questions raised by the tweet, Trump associates tried to put distance Saturday evening between the president himself and the tweet. One person familiar with the situation said the tweet was actually crafted by John Dowd, one of the president’s personal attorneys. Dowd declined to comment when reached by the AP on Saturday night. Body of missing toddler found in creek by divers JACKSONVILLE, N.C. A week after Mariah Woods’ mother said the 3-year-old vanished in the middle of the night, divers found what they believe is the girl’s tiny body in a creek 20 miles from the family’s home. The discovery Saturday was a grim but not unexpected turn in what is now a homicide case. Earlier in the day, investigators said they didn’t expect to find the girl alive. Authorities announced the arrest Saturday, at the same time that they said Mariah was probably dead. Earl Kimrey, 32, was arrested

The first birth as a result of a womb transplant in the U.S. has occurred in Texas, a milestone for the U.S. but one achieved several years ago in Sweden. A woman who had been born without a uterus gave birth to the baby at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. The hospital confirmed Friday that the birth had taken place, but did not identify the woman or provide details. Baylor has had a study underway for several years to enroll up to 10 women for uterus transplants. In October 2016, the hospital said four had received transplants but that three of the wombs had to be removed because of poor blood flow. The hospital would give no information on how many have been performed since then. Time magazine says eight have been done in all, and that another woman is currently pregnant. (AP)

Dems unite against bill Tax vote sparks political brawl over populism that will carry into the 2018 elections POLITICS The Senate Republicans’ chaotic vote early Saturday morning to overhaul the tax system widened the country’s partisan divisions — sparking a political grudge match. Democrats, united in their opposition, attacked the legislation as a “scam” passed to benefit wealthy donors and corporations. Republicans, promising years of wage and job growth once the bill becomes law, acknowledged that they face a difficult task convincing voters to have faith in a measure that received support from the GOP alone. “They tend not to be popular,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said, referring to bills passed with only one party’s support. “Generally speaking, in the beginning, people decide they don’t like it.” The test for Republicans is whether they can convince voters that this legislation will put more money in their wallets — and the GOP leader is not sure whether they can do that in time for the 2018 elections. “We don’t know,” McConnell said. But he said he thinks that in the long run, the economic boost will come and voters will eventually reward Republicans. Just hours after the vote, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., demonstrated his intention to make the tax bill a marquee issue in 2018. “The president was lying to you,” Sanders said. “This is class warfare, and we’re going to stand up and fight.” The back and forth showed the opportunities — and challenges — for each side as they stake their political ground on taxes. Democrats see an opening for an attack on President Trump and Republicans as allies of the wealthy and Wall Street interests. Republicans, who watched Trump

spark of a “middle-class miracle” that voters will see soon in their paychecks. “It’s time to pound away on growth, and don’t depart from that message,” said Larry Kudlow, a conservative economist and informal Trump adviser. “The message of growth and jobs and

wages is hitting. As long as the GOP stays on that, they’ll be fine.” Democrats have found solace in public polling. A polling average compiled by FiveThirtyEight found that 46 percent of the public opposes the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, compared with 32 percent who support it. That makes it slightly less popular than the 1993 tax increase that helped Republicans seize Congress from President Bill Clinton’s Democrats. Guy Cecil, the president of Priorities USA, said surveys show that voters will respond negatively when they learn the details of the legislation. “When Americans find out that the wealthy and big corporations are getting most of the benefits, they oppose it, even when they get something small as well,” he said. Republicans were confident that the public would move once the new tax code took effect. Trump, who has inaccurately said that the bill would tax the very wealthy to help workingclass Americans, has predicted an economic boom that would lead quickly to employers raising wages. Democrats see it differently, with the tax bill at the center of their increasingly populist campaign. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, who is up for re-election in 2018, said he plans to use all facets of Trump’s regulatory and tax policies to make a case against him and the Republicancontrolled Congress. “The public by Election Day will see how this Republican majority is wholly owned by Wall Street on every issue and the administration increasingly resembles a retreat for Goldman Sachs executives,” Brown said. DAVID WEIGEL, ROBERT COSTA AND PAUL KANE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

In rush to finish, GOP edited bill with pen marks POLITICS As many Americans were sleeping, Senate Republicans passed a $1.5 trillion tax bill in the wee hours of Saturday morning. While most GOP lawmakers touted the legislation as a major win, Democrats took to Twitter to lambaste the hasty process. “It’s the night we’re going to be voting on the tax bill,” Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., said in a video posted just after 7 p.m. Friday. “I just got the tax bill 25 minutes ago.” From the top of the 479-page pile of papers, he plucked a page that contained handwritten edits scrawled in the margin. “I want you to take a look at this, folks. This is your government at work,” Tester said. “Here’s the bill as it’s written. Here’s the modifications that are in it. . . . Can you tell me what that word is?” “This is Washington, D.C. at its worst,” Tester wrote on Twitter. Many Democrats zeroed in on the manual edits as evidence that Republicans were carelessly ramming the bill through the Senate without thorough consideration. Shortly after receiving the draft, Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., posted two pages that were crossed out and thus seemed to be irrelevant. Or were they? “Okay, this is absurd,” Menendez said. “Is that a crossout? Is this page part of the bill? WHY AM I ASKING THESE QUESTIONS HOURS BEFORE WE VOTE ON IT??” AMY B WANG (TWP)

Man’s tattoo left physicians in a quandary Doctors at Miami’s Jackson Memorial Hospital faced an ethical dilemma when an unconscious, deteriorating patient arrived at the emergency room with the words “Do Not Resuscitate” tattooed on his chest. The tattoo seemed to convey his end-of-life wishes. The word “Not” was underlined, and the tattoo included a signature. Doctors had to determine if it was a legal and accurate representation of what the patient, 70, wanted. He had no identification, so no one else could be contacted quickly. “This patient’s tattooed DNR request produced more confusion than clarity, given concerns about its legality and likely unfounded beliefs that tattoos might represent permanent reminders of regretted decisions made while the person was intoxicated,” doctors wrote in an article published last week in the New England Journal of Medicine. The lead author, Gregory Holt, said the patient had an infection that led to septic shock, which causes organ failure. Doctors provided basic care in order to buy time to decide on a plan. An ethics consultant then told them it would be proper to follow the tattoo’s instructions. The doctors were relieved when a social worker tracked down the man’s records and confirmed that he didn’t want to be resuscitated. He died the next morning. LINDSEY BEVER

CVS to buy Aetna in $69B deal Mega-merger could lower health care costs, create medical hubs

HEALTH Pharmacy giant CVS Health has agreed to buy Aetna in a $69 billion acquisition that could rein in health care costs and transform its pharmacy storefronts into medical hubs for primary care and basic procedures, people familiar with the deal said Sunday. The pharmacy chain agreed to buy Aetna for about $207 per share — $145 in cash and the rest in stock. The deal is expected to close in the second half of 2018, subject to approval by shareholders and regulators. If approved, the mega-merger would create a giant health care company, allowing CVS to

Poll: Moore trails slightly in Senate race in Alabama The U.S. Senate race in Alabama is neck and neck as voter concerns about personal conduct weigh on the candidacy of Republican Roy Moore, according to a Washington Post-Schar School poll released Saturday. provide a broad range of health services to Aetna’s 22 million medical members at its pharmacies and walk-in clinics, and further decrease the drug store’s reliance on retail sales that have faced increasing competition. The deal is likely to set off more mergers in the health care industry, which has been undergoing consolidation and faces competition from Amazon. It will also position Aetna to be more competitive with UnitedHealth Group. “I think it will create more consolidation among the insurers and retailers, blurring the lines,” said analyst Ana Gupte. Analysts have said that the deal could lower health spending if CVS can push customers to use walk-in clinics instead of emergency rooms for minor problems. But consumer advocates argue

the deal could limit consumer choice and make it harder for new companies to enter the market. CVS has been a dominant player in negotiating drug prices for insurers and employees. The merger would give CVS a broader

role in managing health care. The combined company could leverage massive amounts of data from both Aetna’s medical claims and CVS’ touchpoints to consumers, including its 9,700 retail stores and 1,100 MinuteClinics. CVS plans to turn those locations into health hubs, where pharmacists and nurses can provide follow-up and monitoring to patients recently released from hospitals. They could also offer wellness, nutrition and imaging services — saving costs by keeping people healthier and providing care in a low-cost setting. Last year, Aetna-Humana and Anthem-Cigna mergers crumbled under antitrust opposition. But a merger between companies that don’t directly compete has a better chance. CAROLYN Y. JOHNSON

Tide slides into playoff

Alabama, not Ohio State, picked to join Clemson, Oklahoma and Georgia in semifinals COLLEGE FOOTBALL Alabama on Sunday became the answer to the grand riddle of the 2017 College Football Playoff season, snaring the coveted No. 4 spot in the four-team playoff behind No. 1 Clemson, No. 2 Oklahoma and No. 3 Georgia. The final rankings make Alabama the only team to reach the playoff in every season of the 4-year-old concept. Of Alabama’s four qualifications, this proved the narrowest for the 13-member selection committee. The Crimson Tide (11-1) finished just ahead of No. 5 Ohio State (11-2) despite the Buckeyes’ place in a conference championship game Saturday. Alabama’s 26-14 loss at Auburn on Nov. 25 left the Tide second in the SEC West and omitted from the league’s title game. Ohio State beat then-No. 4 Wisconsin, which wound up No. 6, in a 27-21 Big Ten conclusion that muddied the path for the Tide, which was the No. 1 seed in 2014 and 2016 and was No. 2 in 2015.

The presence of SEC powers Alabama and Georgia means that for the first time, a single conference placed two teams in the top four. The Tide is the second-ever playoff qualifier that did not reach a conference championship. Last year Ohio State went 11-1 and made the playoff while 11-2 Penn State missed out despite winning a Big Ten title and owning a headto-head victory over Ohio State. Committee chairman Kirby Hocutt told ESPN on Sunday that the strength of Alabama’s loss was a point of emphasis. Hocutt lauded Alabama as “consistent” over the three-month season and called Ohio State’s 31-point loss on Nov. 4 to unranked Iowa “most damaging.” Three members of the committee — Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith, Clemson athletic director Dan Radakovich and former Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer — recused themselves from voting on the top teams.

Beamer’s son is an assistant coach at Georgia. The seedings released Sunday provide a Clemson-Alabama semifinal matchup. The two alternated wins in the past two national championship games. “Excited about it,” Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said on ESPN, calling a Clemson-Alabama meeting “only fitting” and “a heavyweight matchup.” No team with two losses has reached the College Football Playoff to date, with the four

committees having selected 13 one-loss teams and three unbeatens among its 16 qualifiers. The committee features five former coaches, four athletic directors, one recently dismissed athletic director, a university president, a former NCAA executive and a former reporter for USA Today. They placed Alabama and Ohio State at Nos. 5 and 8, respectively, last week. Ohio State had the conference title and three wins over top-16 teams: Wisconsin, Penn State and Michigan State. Alabama had two wins over ranked teams: LSU and Mississippi State. The Crimson Tide beat six bowl teams and one (Ole Miss) with a self-imposed bowl ban. The Buckeyes beat five bowl teams. Defending national champion Clemson is in the playoff for a third time. Oklahoma makes its second appearance — the Sooners lost to Clemson in the 2015 Orange Bowl — and Georgia debuts.

Texas A&M greeted its soon-to-be incredibly well-compensated football coach with all the trappings of a royal reception Sunday. Jimbo Fisher, who resigned as coach at Florida State on Friday, did not touch the tarmac at Easterwood Airport in College Station, Texas. He instead stepped out of a small Gulfstream plane and walked to a waiting car on a maroon carpet while a small section of the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band played for him. Fisher, who coached for eight years at FSU and led the Seminoles to a national title in the 2013 season, is expected to have his new contract approved by school regents this morning. The deal is reportedly worth $75 million guaranteed over 10 years. GABE HIATT (EXPRESS)

Case Keenum threw a pair of touchdown passes, and the Vikings kept the Falcons out of the end zone in Atlanta as Minnesota won its eighth straight. Keenum went 25 of 30 for 227 yards. His 6-yard TD toss to Kyle Rudolph on the first snap of the fourth quarter capped an 89-yard drive that consumed more than 8 minutes for the Vikings (10-2). The Falcons (7-5) led 9-7 in the third quarter but failed to score a touchdown for the first time since Dec. 13, 2015. (AP)

Aaron Jones scored the Packers’ winning TD in overtime with a 20-yard run on his only carry against Tampa Bay.

Joe Flacco threw for 269 yards and two touchdowns, and the Ravens survived a strong comeback bid by Matthew Stafford and the Lions in Baltimore. The Ravens (7-5) finally received an ample contribution from the league’s 31st-ranked offense. Flacco helped Baltimore take a 20-0 halftime lead and directed three scoring drives in the fourth quarter to keep the Ravens ahead. Stafford completed a team-record 20 straight passes. But Detroit (6-6) lost its second straight. (AP)

Rex Burkhead scored twice to help the visiting Patriots win their eighth straight. He was 26-of-37 with 293 yards and an interception. Chicago (3-9) dropped its fifth straight as coach John Fox fell to 12-32 over three seasons. (AP)

LeShaun Sims intercepted a pass in the end zone with 1:02 left, and the Titans won at home to hold their AFC South lead over Jacksonville, which beat visiting Indianapolis. Marcus Mariota ran for a score and threw for another, but Tennessee (8-4) needed the pick and to preserve the lead before Derrick Henry ran in a 75-yard touchdown. Tom Savage threw for a career-high 365 yards for Houston (4-8), which lost four offensive players to injuries. (AP)

Brett Hundley threw for only 84 yards, but the Packers (6-6) kept their playoff hopes alive on the ground. Jamaal Williams ran for 113 yards and a TD, and Aaron Jones’ 20-yard scoring run with 5:59 left in overtime delivered a home win. The Packers trail the Vikings by four games in the NFC North, but QB Aaron Rodgers (collarbone) can return in two weeks. Jameis Winston threw two TD passes for the Buccaneers (4-8). (AP)

Josh McCown threw for 331 yards and scored on a 1-yard sneak with 2:15 left to help the Jets bounce back from an early deficit at home. In the 109-91 win over Detroit, he shot 5 of 6 with 17 points — the second straight matchup in which he set his single-game career high — and also tallied four assists, four rebounds and a steal. With Wall out for at least another week, Satoransky’s confidence has grown. Knowing that he’ll play has helped; Satoransky logged zero minutes in nine games this year. On Friday, he knocked down two 3-pointers — showing that extra work in that area of his game is paying off. “A lot of things are just clicking for me,” he said. “When you start to play good and start to play better as a unit … good things happen.” CANDACE BUCKNER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Tiger ties for ninth in his best finish in four years Rickie Fowler and Tiger Woods both had reasons to celebrate Sunday at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas. Fowler rallied from a seven-shot deficit by opening with seven straight birdies and closed with an 11-under 61 for his second victory worldwide this year. Woods had his best finish in four years. Playing for the first time in 10 months while recovering from a fourth back surgery, Woods closed with a 68 despite a bogey-bogey finish. Even so, his back felt good and he was swinging at full strength. He tied for ninth in the 18-man field, his best result since a playoff loss at this holiday event in 2013. (AP)

Rachel Brosnahan proves she’s got comedy chops as the mouthy Mrs. Maisel.

MUST-SEE THIS WEEK

1 ‘Cash Cab’

MARC SILVER | BROADCAST MUSE

Meet ‘Mrs. Maisel’: She gets hurt, then she gets funny sharpener. A devastated (and drunk) Mrs. Maisel stumbles off to a comedy club, elbows her way on stage, spits out a monologue about her unfaithful husband and gets herself arrested for flashing her breasts and declaring, “There’s no f---ing way Penny Pann can compete with these.” (For an Eisenhower-era show, there are a lot of F-bombs.) “Marvelous” isn’t always marvelous. It’s hard to imagine what drew Miriam to Joel, a weasely dullard who aspires to be a comic despite the fact that he is remarkably unfunny. The rapid-fire dialogue, a Sherman-Palladino trademark, can grate. And while Miriam is funny, other characters are funnier. Joel’s dad kills when explaining the Jewish holidays: “It’s New Year’s but we’re guilty.” But that does bring up another issue. The show is so laden with Yiddishkeit that not everyone will get all the references. Indeed, Vulture’s review said Miriam invited the rabbi to “her Yom Kippur breakfast.”

$26.1M

After five years off the road, the commute-turnedgame show is back, with cabbie and host Ben Bailey challenging New York’s taxihailers to trivia in exchange for cash prizes.

2 ‘Happy!’ 10 p.m. Wednesday on Syfy

Based on a graphic novel, this crime drama-meetscomedy stars Christopher Meloni as a former police officer who uses visions of a winged blue unicorn (voiced by Patton Oswalt) to help him solve crimes.

3 ‘The Crown AMAZON

It’s a TV tradition to turn stand-up comics into sitcom stars. “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (with an eight-episode first season now streaming on Amazon) turns that formula around. Created by Amy ShermanPalladino of “Gilmore Girls” fame, the series is a dramedy about the making of a Joan Rivers-like comic, starring an actress who is not a comedian — although Rachel Brosnahan lands a punchline like a pro. Brosnahan plays the titular Mrs. Miriam “Midge” Maisel, a 1950s housewife who thinks she has the perfect life: loving husband, lovely children, an Upper West Side apartment so vast and ornate that one visitor says, “What is this, f---ing Versailles?” Then one day husband Joel tells Miriam he’s leaving her for his absurdly named secretary Penny Pann, who’s so dumb she doesn’t know how to use an electric pencil

10 p.m. Monday on Discovery

Oy, that’s a break-the-fast meal after sundown, not breakfast! But flaws, schmaws. With fury and anguish in her eyes, Miriam makes us care about her as she spins her crumbling life into X-rated monologues that defy the conventions of the repressed times. She says she believed the fairy tale promising years of happiness from Prince Charming (“that’s plausible”), only now, as she puts it, “Sleeping Beauty is screwed.”

As a bonus, the show has a stylized look: Its neon-lightsand-poufy-skirts re-creation of 1950s Manhattan is delightful. As is the soundtrack, from Barbra Streisand’s obscure “Come to the Supermarket (In Old Peking)” to David Bowie’s 1974 hit “Rebel Rebel.” Well, no one said “Mrs. M” was a totally faithful period piece. But she’s definitely a rebel.

The box office take of Pixar’s animated kids film “Coco” in its second weekend in theaters, according to Box Office Mojo. Also repeating last weekend’s rankings, “Thor: Ragnarok” ($9.7 million) and “Daddy’s Home 2” ($7.5 million) rounded out the top five. Arab-Israeli conflict is an unlikely setting for a show with such heart

Don't Replace...

REFACE!

NETFLIX

STREAMING On the set of the hit Israeli drama series “Fauda,” Jews and Arabs often laugh rapturously together. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has never been so much fun. “Fauda,” which translates as “chaos” in Arabic, is filming its second season (premiering Dec. 31 on Israeli TV and in 2018 on Netflix), and, of course, there is nothing fun about its main subject matter: a decades-old conflict that has brought myriad wars and deaths. The show explores these issues through the story of Doron Kavillio (cocreator Lior Raz) and his team of Israeli undercover agents as they chase a group of Palestinian terrorists around the West Bank. Despite its dark premise, the show has captured the hearts of audiences in Israel and, since its first season was picked up by Netflix last year, it has spread to the United States, as well 190 countries worldwide. Earlier this year, Conan O’Brien stopped by the set to film a skit in which he “interrogates” Doron to reveal the address of Israeli actress Gal Gadot. The show’s creators never expected all this. “It’s the unsexiest issue on earth,” says co-creator

“Fauda” star and co-creator Lior Raz (second from right) based many plotlines in the drama series on his days in the Israeli Defense Forces.

and journalist Avi Issacharoff. Mainstream channels in Israel rejected it before Israeli satellite television company Yes took it on, and Netflix came on board soon after. Now, Raz and Issacharoff have been commissioned by Netflix to create two more spy shows. Raz, who took inspiration for the show from his experiences serving in the Israel Defense Forces, says sometimes the Arab actors will dispute the way their characters are portrayed, and so they’ll rewrite a scene together. “Obviously, I am Israeli, so I write with an Israeli narrative, but we are also good listeners and will make changes if we feel they are good for the show.”

It is perhaps the relationship Doron forms with a Palestinian doctor, Shirin Al Abed, that most challenges stereotypes, as it touches on the taboo of love between a Jew and an Arab. Doron initially courts Shirin while undercover to gain information but develops feelings for her and reveals his true identity. Shirin, played by Laetitia Eido, falls for Doron, too, only to be left heartbroken and betrayed. Eido refuses to reveal whether Shirin gets her revenge on Doron in Season 2. “All I can say is that everything you saw from Shirin in the first season is harder and more intense in the second season,” Eido says.
