Many Ohio State University students are taking a break from studying for finals by making a bacon run. Senior Sarah Page, who studies meat science, says the bacon vending machine at the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences has been even more popular than expected. It has to be restocked four or five times a day. It offers cooked bacon strips and bacon bits for $1. Proceeds will benefit the meat science program. (AP)
A film promotion organization in Cincinnati is holding a cattle call for actual cattle. The nonprofit Film Cincinnati put out a call for a major motion picture Friday, saying it needed cows. The Cincinnati Enquirer reported that the request is specific about the type of cows needed: Only non-milking brown and white cows need apply. The cows should also be human-friendly, haltertrained and from the same herd. (AP)
A moose used the doorbell to awaken a couple in Alaska. The couple thought maybe it was an aftershock or some kids playing a prank when the doorbell rang in their Anchorage home early Wednesday. Kyle Stultz told KTVA-TV he looked out the door and found nothing. He assumed it was kids playing “ding dong ditch,” but decided to check his security camera. The video showed a large moose backing right into the doorbell. (AP)

page three Beloved Md. diner is slated to become a marijuana dispensary

LAUREL, MD. At the lunch counter of Laurel’s Tastee Diner, waitresses and cooks recognize the regulars taking a seat on the blue stools next to the gold-speckled countertop. “George! Where you been?” waitress and cashier Donna Rock asked. “Dead? Jail?” Rock hadn’t seen the elderly, white-haired man — one of her most loyal customers — in a month. He quietly sipped coffee, then responded. “Jail,” he said, eliciting chuckles. It’s that humor and compassion, developed over four decades between customers and staff, that residents fear will be lost in a plan to turn the diner into a medical marijuana dispensary. The diner’s longtime owner is selling the site to a Bethesda-area company that will put pot on the menu. Preservationists want to stop the deal, saying the establishment’s stainless steel design is one of a handful of existing exteriors made by Comac, a 1950s manufacturer known for making

diners with stainless steel or aluminum exteriors. Regular customers, meanwhile, are sad to see it go. “It’s a dependable habit,” said 72-year-old Bruce Juba, a retired
U.S. Treasury employee. City leaders are expected to decide Tuesday whether to allow the marijuana dispensary company, Pure Hana Synergy, to operate at the site.
If approved, construction is likely to start early next year, with an opening in June. It would become one of about 70 medical marijuana dispensaries in the state. The possible closure of the diner, which is open 24 hours every day of the week, has left employees nervous and customers nostalgic. The diner’s owner, Gene Wilkes, has operated the Laurel spot since the 1970s. He also owns two other Tastee Diners — one in Silver Spring and one in Bethesda. Rock said workers are anxious but not angry at Wilkes for selling after decades of running three restaurants. “The building’s a piece of aluminum,” Rock said. “Most of us are wondering where we’re going to go.” Jeff Dudley, 62, who works as a shift manager, said he remembers coming to Tastee Diner on special occasions with his family. After 20 years working elsewhere, he came back to work. “This place is full of old stories, but nobody wants to hear them anymore,” he said. As his eyes welled with tears, he added, “This is home.” DANA HEDGPETH (THE WASHINGTON POST)

CHARLOTTESVILLE Civil rights activists in Charlottesville say they hope the firstdegree murder conviction of a man who drove into a group of counter-protesters at a white nationalist rally in 2017 will help with healing their violencescarred community. In convicting James Alex Fields Jr. of first-degree murder, a state jury on Friday rejected defense arguments that the 21-year-old defendant had acted in self-defense during a “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville on Aug. 12, 2017. Jurors also convicted Fields of eight other charges, including aggravated malicious wounding and hit-and-run. The jury will reconvene today to recommend a sentence. Under Virginia law, jurors can recommend from 20 years to life in prison on the first-degree murder charge. Fields is eligible for the death penalty if convicted of separate federal hate crime charges. No trial has been scheduled yet. During the trial, jurors heard that Fields drove to Virginia from his home in Maumee, Ohio, to support the white nationalists. As a large group of counter-protesters marched through Charlottesville singing and laughing, he stopped his car, backed up, then sped into the crowd, according to testimony from witnesses and

city’s way of saying, “We will not tolerate this in our city.” “We don’t stand for this type of hate,” she said. The far-right rally had been
organized in part to protest the planned removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. Hundreds of Ku Klux Klan members, neo-Nazis and other white nationalists — emboldened by the election of President Trump — streamed into the college town for one of the largest gatherings of white supremacists in a decade. According to one of his former teachers, Fields was known in high school for being fascinated with Nazism and idolizing Adolf Hitler. Jurors were shown a text message he sent to his mother days before the rally that included an image of the notorious German dictator. During one of two recorded phone calls Fields made to his mother from jail after he was arrested, he told her he had been mobbed “by a violent group of terrorists” at the rally. In another, Fields referred to the mother of the woman who was killed as a “communist” and “one of those anti-white supremacists.” Prosecutors also showed jurors a meme Fields posted on Instagram three months before the rally in which bodies are shown being thrown into the air after a car hits a crowd of people identified as protesters. He posted the meme publicly. Counter-protester Wednesday Bowie, who was struck by Fields’ car and suffered a broken pelvis and other injuries, said she was gratified by the guilty verdict. “This is the best I’ve been in a year and a half,” Bowie said. Judge to rule on town’s topless ban on beaches A federal judge said he will decide in the coming days whether to suspend a Maryland beach town’s ordinance prohibiting topless women in public. The Baltimore Sun reported that U.S. District Judge James Bredar will decide whether to stop Ocean City from enforcing its ban until a lawsuit on the issue is resolved. Five women sued the town earlier this year saying they had the right to appear topless in public like men. City officials unanimously passed the ordinance during an emergency session last year. THE DISTRICT Activists are scrambling to collect thousands of signatures needed to revive a law approved by voters but overturned by the D.C. Council that would change how D.C.’s servers, bartenders and other tipped employees are paid. Voters in June approved Initiative 77 to gradually end a two-tier minimum wage system that allows employers to count gratuities when paying workers. Months later, the D.C. Council overturned the initiative. Now advocates are trying to hold a referendum vote on the council’s action — essentially asking voters to repeal the repeal. But a combination of procedural rules, legal challenges and bad timing left referendum supporters with a week to collect about 25,000 signatures required to put the issue back on the ballot. If they manage to collect enough signatures, the city will hold a special election early next year. Officials with the “Save Our Vote” coalition have deployed more than 100 signature collectors to pull off what seems like an insurmountable task. They are paying circulators $3.75 a signature with the possibility of more, quadruple the standard rate.

Group races the clock to collect signatures to get bill back on ballot
Eric Butler works in a “Save Our Vote” war room, verifying signatures on a petition aimed at restoring to the ballot the issue of paying tipped workers.
Workers have been working around the clock since Thursday, verifying that signatures belong to registered D.C. voters. “The system is set up against the democratic process,” said the Rev. Graylan Hagler. “It’s unfair, it’s daunting, but the reality is that’s what the city has in place to make it daunting to make it so you don’t have to hear back from the voters.” Referendum supporters must collect the required signatures within the 30-legislative-day congressional review period for all D.C. laws. That period can vary depending on the congressional calendar. The deadline to submit signatures is Wednesday. Referendum supporters are discussing ways to get an extension, including

asking a judge to count days lost because of a legal dispute and challenging the city’s referendum process. “This is crazy pressure. Nowhere in the country are referendums under this kind of timetable,” said Adam Eidinger, a pro-marijuana activist who is volunteering to lead signaturecollecting efforts. Saru Jayaraman, who leads Restaurant Opportunities Centers United, predicted voters’ anger toward the repeal of a ballot initiative would help her group qualify a referendum. “People really feel that it’s complete voter nullification,” Jayaraman said. “People feel very motivated to have the chance to overturn the council’s repeal.” FENIT NIRAPPIL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Trump announces picks to fill two key roles
People in Paris look at graffiti and broken windows Sunday following a fourth weekend of national protests.
Macron will address France amid protests President seeks ways to end unrest sparked by economic policies PARIS Pressure has been mounting on French President Emmanuel Macron to announce concrete measures to calm protests marked by violence when he addresses the nation today, breaking a long silence widely seen as aggravating a crisis that has shaken the government and the whole country. The president first will consult with an array of national and local officials as he tries to get a handle on the ballooning and radicalizing protest movement triggered by anger at his policies,
and a growing sense that they favor the rich. Government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux said on TV he was sure that Macron “will know how to find the path to the hearts of the French, speak to their hearts.” But, he added, a “magic wand” won’t solve all the problems of the protesters, known as “yellow vests” for the safety gear they wear at demonstrations. Last week, Macron withdrew a fuel tax hike — the issue that kicked off protests in midNovember — in an effort to appease the protesters, but the move was seen as too little, too late. Paris tourist sites reopened Sunday, while workers cleaned up debris from protests that left widespread damage in the capital
and elsewhere. At least 71 were injured in Paris on Saturday. F rench med i a repor ted 136,000 protesters nationwide on Saturday. However, the number of injured was down. About 1,000 people, almost 100 of them minors and most without police records, were being held in custody after Saturday’s protests in the French capital, Paris’ chief prosecutor said. France deployed about 89,000 police but still failed to deter the protesters. More than 125,000 “gilets jaunes” took to the streets around France with a bevy of demands related to high living costs and a sense that Macron favors the elite and is trying to modernize the French economy too fast. Dog guarded home through weeks of fire As the Camp Fire raged, killing at least 85 people and displacing thousands in Northern California, Madison waited patiently. The Anatolian shepherd mix’s owner, Andrea Gaylord, couldn’t get to her home in Paradise when the fire began to spread on Nov. 8, so Madison was left behind. A volunteer left food and water out for him. When the evacuation order was lifted last week and Gaylord went back to survey her property — which had been destroyed by the fire — she found Madison there, seemingly protecting what little remained of his family’s home. “Imagine the loyalty of hanging in through the worst of circumstances and being here waiting,” Gaylord told the local ABC affiliate. “You could never ask for better animals.” (THE WASHINGTON POST)

School lunches will get less healthful
The U.S. school lunch program is bringing back noodles, biscuits and other foods made mostly from refined grains. The Trump administration is scaling back contested rules implemented under President Obama, including one that allowed only whole grains. The new rule will require that only half of grains served be whole grains. Low-fat chocolate milk also will be OK again. Critics said fewer children were eating the lunches, and that the standards were hard to meet. (AP/TWP)

President Trump announced Saturday that he would nominate Army Gen. Mark Milley as the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Milley is a four-star general who serves as Army chief of staff. Brexit on the brink in U.K. LONDON With a crucial parliamentary vote on Brexit looming, British Prime Minister Theresa May warned lawmakers Sunday that they could take Britain into “uncharted waters” and trigger a general election if they reject the divorce deal she struck with the European Union. May is fighting to save her unpopular Brexit plan — and her job — ahead of a showdown in Parliament on Tuesday, when lawmakers are widely expected to vote down the deal she negotiated with the EU. Her office insisted that the vote will go ahead despite speculation that the government might be forced to delay it. A defeat could see Britain crashing out of the European Union on March 29, the date for Britain’s exit, with no deal in place — an outcome that some observers think could spark economic chaos. In an interview with the Mail newspaper Sunday, May said nixing her deal would “mean grave uncertainty for the nation with a very real risk of no Brexit

or leaving the European Union with no deal.” “When I say if this deal does not pass we would truly be in uncharted waters, I hope people understand this is what I genuinely believe and fear could happen,” she said. May’s government does not have a majority in the House of Commons, and opposition parties — as well as many of May’s own Conservatives — have already
said they will not back the deal agreed on last month. Pro-Brexit lawmakers say the deal keeps Britain bound too closely to the EU, while pro-EU politicians say it erects barriers between the U.K. and its biggest trading partner and leaves many details of the future relationship undecided. The main sticking point is a “backstop” provision in the Brexit agreement that aims
to guarantee an open border between EU member Ireland and the U.K.’s Northern Ireland post-Brexit. The temporary measure would keep Britain under EU customs rules, and is supposed to last until it is superseded by permanent new trade arrangements. But critics say it could leave Britain tied to the EU indefinitely, unable to strike new trade deals around the world. It’s unclear what would happen next if lawmakers vote down the deal. May could return to Brussels seeking changes to the Brexit deal and bring it back to Parliament for another vote. However, EU leaders have insisted the divorce agreement is final and not renegotiable. While the 585-page withdrawal deal is set, the declaration on future relations between the EU and Britain is shorter and vaguer and may be open to amendment. China summoned U.S. ambassador Terry Branstad to Beijing on Sunday to protest the detention of Meng Wanzhou, an executive of Chinese electronics giant Huawei, in Canada at the behest of the U.S., and demanded the U.S. cancel an order for her arrest. Early returns from Armenia’s snap parliamentary election Sunday showed the new prime minister’s bloc with a commanding lead. Democratic Gov.-elect Tony Evers said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that he’s not optimistic that Wisconsin’s outgoing governor, Republican Scott Walker, will veto bills approved by the Republican-led Legislature that would limit the new governor’s power. Taliban target Messi fan, 7, who went viral KABUL, AFGHANISTAN A young Afghan soccer fan who shot to fame after he was photographed in a Lionel Messi shirt made from a plastic bag has been forced to flee his home district with his family after criminal gangs and the Taliban threatened to kill or kidnap him, his mother said Friday. Since becoming an internet sensation two years ago, Shafiqa Ahmedi said, Murtaza, now 7, has not been able to attend school. She said they are living in an unheated room in Kabul. Murtaza met the Argentinian soccer star in December 2017 in Qatar. But the popularity of the boy — pictured above in an autographed Messi jersey — has turned into a nightmare. “I wish Murtaza had never become so famous,” his mother told The Associated Press. “It has created a big problem for us and for him.” Criminals threatened to kidnap the boy, assuming his brush with fame somehow resulted in a windfall. Taliban insurgents stopped local school buses asking if anyone knew of Murtaza. Last November, when Taliban fighters launched attacks in the family’s home district of Joguri, they fled to the relative safety of Bamiyan province. But the threats continued. The family moved to the Afghan capital three weeks ago. Murtaza’s uncle said the family has received at least 10 letters and calls from gangs threatening the boy. AMIR SHAH (AP)

‘Real prospect of jail’
Top House Democrats discuss impeachment of Trump if Mueller probe proves fraud Pence aide pulls out of running to replace Kelly
AP AND GETTY IMAGES
POLITICS Top House Democrats on Sunday raised the prospect of impeachment or almost-certain prison time for President Trump if it’s proved that he directed illegal hush-money payments to women, adding to the legal pressure on the president over the Russia investigation and other scandals. “There’s a very real prospect that on the day Donald Trump leaves office, the Justice Department may indict him, that he may be the first president in quite some time to face the real prospect of jail time,” said Rep. Adam Schiff, the incoming chairman of the House intelligence committee. “The bigger pardon question may come down the road as the next president has to determine whether to pardon Donald Trump.” Rep. Jerry Nadler, the incoming chairman of the House judiciary committee, described the details of prosecutors’ filings Friday in the case of Trump’s former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, as evidence that Trump was “at the center of a massive fraud.” “They would be impeachable offenses,” Nadler said. In the filings, prosecutors in New York for the first time link Trump to a federal crime of illegal payments to buy the silence of two women during the 2016 campaign. Special counsel Robert Mueller’s office also laid out previously undisclosed contacts between Trump associates and Russian intermediaries and suggested the Kremlin aimed early on to influence Trump and his Republican campaign by playing to both his political and personal business interests. Trump has denied wrongdoing and has compared the investigations to a “witch hunt.” Nadler, D-N.Y., said it was too

early to say whether Congress would pursue impeachment proceedings based on the illegal payments alone, because lawmakers would need to weigh the gravity of the offense to justify “overturning” the 2016 election. Nadler and other lawmakers said Sunday they would await additional details from Mueller’s investigation into Russian election interference and possible coordination with the Trump campaign to determine the extent of Trump’s misconduct. Mueller has not said when he will complete a report of any findings, and it isn’t clear that any such report would be made available to Congress. That would be up to the attorney general. Trump on Friday said he would nominate former Attorney General William Barr to the post to succeed Jeff Sessions. In the legal filings, the Justice Department stopped short of accusing Trump of directly

Rand Paul, R-Ky.: On NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” he played down the alleged campaign finance violations detailed by prosecutors, arguing that such missteps should not be “over-criminalized.” “I personally think that if someone makes an error in filing paperwork or not categorizing, it shouldn’t be jail time, it ought to be a fine.” Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla.: On CBS News’ “Face the Nation,” he said “there’s no reason to not stand by anybody in this moment,” drawing a distinction between individuals who have been accused of crimes and pleaded guilty and others, presumably Trump. Rubio emphasized “the right of someone to argue that the evidence is not what you say it is.”

committing a crime. But it said Trump told Cohen to make illegal payments to porn actress Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal, both of whom claimed to have had affairs with Trump more than a decade ago. In separate filings, Mueller’s team details how Cohen spoke to a Russian who “claimed to be a ‘trusted person’ in the Russian Federation who could offer the campaign ‘political synergy’ and ‘synergy on a government level.’” Cohen said he never followed up on that meeting. Mueller’s team also said former campaign chairman Paul Manafort lied to them about his contacts with a Russian associate and Trump administration officials, including in 2018. Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, cautioned against a rush to impeachment, which he said citizens could interpret as “political revenge and a coup against the president.” HOPE YEN (AP)
POLITICS Nick Ayers, President Trump’s top pick to replace departing chief of staff John Kelly, is no longer expected to fill the role. Ayers, who is chief of staff to Vice President Pence, was seen as the favorite for the job when Trump announced Saturday that Kelly would leave around year’s end. But a White House official said Sunday that Trump and Ayers could not reach an agreement on Ayers’ length of service and that he would instead assist the president from outside the administration. Ayers confirmed the decision in a tweet Sunday, thanking Trump and Pence for giving him the opportunity to work in the White House. “I will be departing at the end of the year but will work with the #MAGA team to advance the cause,” he said. It was not immediately clear whether Trump had a new favorite for the post. Ayers and Trump had discussed the job for months. The new hire was to be key to a West Wing reshuffling to shift focus toward the 2020 re-election campaign and the challenge of governing with Democrats in control of the House. Trump wants his next chief of staff to hold the job through the 2020 election, the official said. Ayers, who has young triplets, had long planned to leave the administration at the end of the year, and had only agreed to serve in an interim basis through next spring. ZEKE MILLER (AP)

It wasn’t known if the can found was the one whose spray apparently set off the stampede about 1 a.m. Saturday in a crowd awaiting a rapper’s performance in the Lanterna Azzurra (Blue

Five teens, all juveniles, and a woman who had accompanied her 11-year-old daughter to the concert died in the crush of fleeing patrons who toppled over a railing atop a cement ramp outside an exit. ENVIRONMENT A diplomatic standoff over a single word could set the stage for a bigger showdown during the second half of this year’s U.N. climate summit. Negotiators took time out Sunday to rest after the first week of talks ended on a sour note the previous night, when the United States sided with Russia, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait in blocking endorsement of a landmark study on global warming. “I think it was a key moment,” said Alden Meyer of the Union of Concerned Scientists. “The fact that a group of four countries were trying to diminish the value and importance of a scientific report they themselves, with all other countries, requested … is pretty remarkable.” The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s special report was widely regarded as a wake-up call for policy-makers when it was released in October. As diplomats wrapped up a week of technical talks Saturday, almost all 200 countries present in Katowice, Poland, had wanted to make it the benchmark for future action. But the U.S. and the other three delegations objected, saying that they “noted” the report, but did not “welcome” it, as that would be seen as an endorsement of its conclusions. Their objection to the report likely included its suggestion that fossil-fuel use needs to be phased out by 2050. FRANK JORDANS (AP)

GIANTS 40, REDSKINS 16 This was all kinds of embarrassing for the Redskins, from the offense to the defense to the special teams, from the poor plays to the face-palm penalties, from the numbers on the scoreboard to the thousands of empty seats in the stands. Facing a last-place team that had nothing to play for — but appeared to have more fans in the stadium Sunday than the home team did — coach Jay Gruden’s Redskins dropped their fourth straight game to fall below .500 with a 40-16 loss to the Giants. Asked whether he’s concerned about his job status, Gruden replied: “My job’s in jeopardy every week. So I’ve just got to go about and do the best I can, get these guys ready to go, and we’ll continue to do that.” Third-string quarterback Mark Sanchez, playing for Washington (6-7) because of injuries to Alex Smith and Colt McCoy, made his first NFL start since 2015 and played like it, going 6-for-14 for 38 yards and two interceptions,

including a pick-six. “It was tough sledding, for sure,” Sanchez said. The score was 40-0 in the third quarter when Gruden yanked Sanchez, whose passer rating was 10.7 and whose longest completion went for 10 yards. A reporter wanted to know what Gruden thought “went wrong” for Sanchez. “What DID work?” came Gruden’s answer. “There was nothing that worked. Nothing
worked. So everything did not work.” Sanchez was replaced by another recently unemployed player, Josh Johnson, who threw his first NFL pass since 2011 and helped the hosts score all of their points in garbage time. Gruden said after the game he would prepare Johnson to start next week at Jacksonville. The Redskins were guilty of two penalties on the initial punt of the game by New York (5-8),

setting a pattern: Washington was flagged 15 times for 135 yards. There were boos repeatedly from a crowd listed at 57,347 — about 25,000 under the stadium’s capacity — and all the blue Giants jerseys in the stands made it “feel like we’re at home” to New York linebacker Alec Ogletree. A Giants offense that was missing star receiver Odell Beckham Jr. did whatever it wanted most times it had the ball and put up 34 points by halftime, only four fewer than its previous highest total for an entire game this season. Rookie running back Saquon Barkley gained 170 yards on only 14 carries, including a 78-yard TD, plus added another 27 yards on four catches. Eli Manning completed 14 of 22 passes for 197 yards and three TDs before taking the fourth quarter off. “It’s tough to deal with. It really is. It’s unfortunate,” Gruden said. “That product we put on the field today is not a reflection of the guys’ work during the week and in practice. However, it did look bad.” HOWARD FENDRICH (AP)
Fourth QB to start for Redskins Mark Sanchez started Sunday after Alex Smith and Colt McCoy were lost for the season with broken legs in the span of three weeks. The Redskins will make another change for Week 15, with coach Jay Gruden saying after the game that Josh Johnson, above, would get the start against the Jaguars. That will mark the Redskins’ fourth starting QB in five weeks, and 19th starting QB since 1999. Despite having not appeared in a game since 2013 and not attempting a pass since 2011, Johnson, who was signed last week, led a pair of fourth-quarter TD drives. Granted, New York led 40-0 when he entered, but the veteran completed 11 of 16 passes for 195 yards with one TD and one interception. He also ran seven times for 45 yards and a score. Wizards players lament trade of veteran Smith

ANALYSIS The Wizards didn’t lose Saturday night to the second-worst team in the Eastern Conference because Jason Smith wasn’t there. But in Washington’s 116-101 loss to the Cavaliers, the 12-year veteran’s presence was still missed where he had made his biggest impact: the locker room. A day after the Wizards dealt Smith, teammates were still coming to grips with the three-team trade that sent him to Milwaukee and netted 6-foot-9 forward Sam Dekker from the Cavaliers. In a poll conducted within the locker room Saturday night, Wizards players expressed myriad emotions about losing Smith, with reactions ranging from disappointment to feeling “pissed off,” as one player acknowledged. The word “tough” came up often as teammates described Smith as a morale booster, a brother and all-around good guy. Veteran Jeff Green, who was part of the same 2007 draft class, admired Smith. Second-year player Thomas Bryant learned team concepts from him, which became helpful when Bryant was propelled into the starting lineup while Smith remained third in the pecking order at center even though the starting lineup had been rearranged after Dwight

Howard’s back surgery. “Every day you have a choice between if you’re going to have a good day or if you’re going to have a bad day,” said Kelly Oubre Jr., who sat next to Smith in the team’s home locker room. “And for him, like, bro, I could never have a bad day because [Smith] never looked like he was having one. … He really taught me how to be a good human being, to be honest.” A teammate said he spoke for at least 10 people in the room when he described Smith leaving the team as a “heartbreaking loss.”

Though unpopular among teammates, the trade was a good financial decision for Washington. By shipping away Smith, who had appeared in only 12 games this season but was making $5.45 million in the final year of his deal, the team slashed its luxury tax bill from the fourth-highest in the league at $18.3 million to $9.8 million, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks. Heisman winner apologizes for anti-gay tweets Hours after winning the Heisman Trophy, Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray apologized for anti-gay tweets he made as a teenager, saying they don’t “reflect who I am or what I believe.” “I apologize for the tweets that have come to light tonight from when I was 14 and 15,” he tweeted Sunday morning. “I used a poor choice of word that doesn’t reflect who I am or what I believe. I did not intend to single out any individual or group.” The offensive tweets were deleted from his account late Saturday night, but screenshots show Murray repeatedly using the word “queer” in tweets. Murray, who passed for 4,053 yards and 40 TDs, beat out QBs Tua Tagovailoa of Alabama and Dwayne Haskins of Ohio State for the Heisman. Murray matched Baker Mayfield, the Oklahoma quarterback who won the award last year and now plays for the Browns. Murray’s Sooners play Alabama in the College Football Playoff on Dec. 29. If you’re hoping for one of those jobs, lots of area graduate programs will give

respond to our questions about the type of jobs they’ll be hiring for, New York officials have said
Barely a week after announcing its HQ2 locations, Amazon revealed that a data breach exposed an unknown number of customer names and emails. It seems like the company could use some smart people to help with cybersecurity. The increased demand for cybersecurity experts — in all fields, not just tech — is why Georgetown is launching a master of professional studies degree in cybersecurity risk management. “One of the things that Amazon needs is people who aren’t looking at cybersecurity only in terms of threats and vulnerabilities but think of cybersecurity
only about half the positions at that headquarters location will be tech jobs. The other half will be “administrative jobs, custodial staff, HR, all those things,” New York Economic Development Corp. vice president Eleni Bourinaris-Suarez told The Wall Street Journal. You can expect about the same breakdown in Northern Virginia, Virginia Economic Development Partnership president Stephen Moret told the Washington Business Journal. How can you prepare to win an Amazon job? Start by taking a look at these programs. BETH MARLOWE (FOR EXPRESS)
Technically speaking If you’re interested in technology jobs, Virginia Tech is creating a campus just for you — and for Amazon. In its pitch for HQ2, the commonwealth lured Amazon in part by promising to build a Virginia Tech Innovation Campus in the newly dubbed “National Landing” area in Crystal City, where Amazon will be located.
After last month’s selection announcement, planning for the campus has begun. The campus will offer oneyear master’s degree programs in computer science and software engineering, says Brandy Salmon, chief operating officer of the Innovation Campus. Students will have the option to specialize in in-demand areas that could include artificial intelligence,
machine learning, the internet of things or technology policy. “We’ll make sure that our curriculum is meeting the needs of our partners and is meeting marketplace needs as well,” Salmon says. “We hope that it will be a pipeline to jobs at Amazon and other industry partners.” Virginia Tech plans to welcome 100 master’s students in fall 2019 — in a temporary space

Education Corporation of America, the owner of a national chain of forprofit schools including Virginia College and Brightwood College in Maryland, announced last week that it is ending operations in the face of dwindling enrollment and regulatory pressures. The abrupt closure left some 20,000 students at more than 70 campuses scrambling ahead of the end of the fall semester last Friday. ECA spokeswoman Diane Worthington said the company will ensure students can access their transcripts to transfer to other schools. The Department of Education said it will work with students to transfer their credits to new institutions or apply for federal student loan forgiveness. Problems at ECA had been brewing for some time. Its marquee brand, Virginia College, had witnessed a steady decline in enrollment. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

as a process,” says Frederic Lemieux, faculty director of Georgetown’s master’s in applied intelligence and cybersecurity risk management. The program, which kicks off in fall 2019, will teach students to manage risk exposure throughout an organization, with courses on cybersecurity frameworks, regulation and compliance, deploying new technologies and communicating risk to various audiences. Lemieux wants students to graduate from the program with “all the qualifications and competencies that a chief information security officer would need,” he says. “That’s our ultimate objective.” The program is designed for
working professionals, with evening classes that meet online or on campus. Most of the accepted students will arrive with about five years of professional experience. Lemieux estimates that students will complete the 33-credit program in 18 to 24 months, depending whether they study full or part time.
Been living under a rock? Amazon’s decision to come to Northern Virginia is the result of a yearlong bidding process to find a location for a second headquarters — dubbed “HQ2” — that promised to bring 50,000 jobs to the winning city. But if we learned anything from “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” it’s that when eccentric billionaires hold contests, the prize is never what it seems. Amazon announced in November that it will split HQ2 between Long Island City, N.Y., and Crystal City, Va. (Washington Post Express’ owner, Jeff Bezos, is the CEO and founder of Amazon.)
Learning, delivered Whether you want your Amazon order to arrive in two hours or two days, you probably know that the e-commerce giant relies on supply chain management. Lucky for you, the University of Maryland has a very wellregarded program in that field. “[Some of our graduates] have already worked for Amazon locally, supervising their warehouses or distribution centers,
so we already have a pipeline,” says Thomas Corsi, a logistics professor. “But this new opportunity would be at the executive level.” U-Md.’s supply chain management programs teach students about the supply chain from end to end, including customer and supplier relationship management, warehouse management and supply chain software.
STUDY WITH
PURPOSE
The Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) is now accepting applications from candidates who seek a deeper understanding of how politics, economics, and international relations drive global change.
They equip students with skills that Amazon will need at the corporate level, such as “understanding transportation costs, the best combination of insourcing and outsourcing and how to come up with the best delivery system at the safest and lowest costs,” Corsi says. U-Md. students can study supply chain management in a oneyear M.S. program or as part
of a full-time or part-time MBA program at campuses in College Park, Shady Grove and downtown Washington. The school plans to launch an online M.S. degree in supply chain management by 2020. “It’s such a huge field, and an amazing and interesting field,” says Muhammad Hasan Ashraf, who graduated from U-Md. last year with an M.S. in supply chain management. He credits the program with helping him land a job as an industrial engineer at UPS’ Laurel, Md., hub. “Everyone just wants to stay home and order online, so e-commerce is booming. And people want stuff at their doors as soon as possible.” And if demand keeps up for products delivered to our doors in no time, how long can it be before we need an HQ3?

KIDS USE THEIR Pamela Burns always pre-shops before she hits the stores with her clients.
This pro gets paid to talk shopping Name: Pamela Burns, 51 Position: Personal shopper
What she does On any given day, Pamela Burns might go clothes shopping for the CEO of a major corporation, then a stay-at-home mom and, later, a teen prepping for her first school dance. She’ll outfit each in the latest fashions tailored to their tastes, and in addition to transforming their looks, there’s a good chance she’ll revamp their confidence levels, too. “The most rewarding part is to get a new client and dress them, and six months later, you see them and almost don’t recognize them,” says Burns, a personal shopper who opened her own D.C.-based company, Pamshops4you, in 2001. “Because they’re walking more confident, they’re smiling and they feel good about how things fit and how they look.” Most of Burns’ clients come to her because they don’t like to shop or just don’t have the time to do it. Many are stuck in a rut
and have been wearing the same things for 10 years, she says, ignoring evolving fashion trends and their own changing sizes. When Burns starts working with someone new, she talks to him or her over the phone and then meets in person to peruse their closet. In addition to personal shopping, she offers closet editing and organizing services: “Sometimes I just look at their closet, and sometimes they hire me to take out all the clothes that are outdated or don’t fit them,” she explains. After getting a sense of a client’s style — if he or she tends to dress conservatively, for example, Burns will stay true to those tendencies — it’s time to go shopping, often at the malls in Tysons Corner and Chevy Chase. Burns always pre-shops ahead of time, examining what’s available at each store to help make outings more efficient. Then, the dressing room is where the magic happens. “A lot of people wear the wrong size
clothing, either too large or too small,” she says. “You can actually look older wearing the wrong size clothes, no matter how old you are. And a lot of times, people think of themselves one way, and if you can get them even a little out of the box, it can make all the difference.” Some clients seek Burns’ assistance just once; she’s been working with others since she opened her business nearly two decades ago. Many want help selecting a new wardrobe each season, while others need to dress for a special event. “We sit down and talk about what their calendar looks like, and we’ll often take pictures of each outfit on their phone,” she says. “That way they can just scroll through and decide what to wear for their events.” Aside from shopping for clothes, Burns says she’s helped many men choose the perfect engagement ring, and she also provides gift-shopping services. man could tell her that he wants to spend $75 on a Valentine’s Day present for his wife, for example, and provide some sense of what she likes, and Burns will then send ideas — with visuals — and purchase the chosen item.
How she got the job When Burns was growing up, she was smitten with the fact that her grandmother had a personal shopper in New York City. So she studied fashion merchandising at the University of Maryland with a minor in business and textiles, and then moved to New York, where she worked in wholesale and sold to buyers at Bloomingdale’s, Saks, Neiman Marcus and other stores. Once she felt that
she had a solid, comprehensive understanding of how the fashion industry worked, she moved back to D.C. to open her own business.
buy things for someone else’s tastes, which might not always be your own tastes. It’s really about being able to make other people happy.”
Who would want the job Do you wake up excited to curate your look for the day? That’s a good start, because personal shoppers have to be obsessed with fashion, clothes and staying ahead of the trends. It’s also important to enjoy working with many types of people, and to be a self-motivator who’s good with schedules — one does not impress clients by showing up late. Plus, remember you’ll need to be able to set aside your own preferences in favor of someone else’s: “A lot of people think, ‘Oh, this is going to be so fun to be shopping all day,’ ” Burns says. “But it’s a job, and you have to

There are multiple paths to becoming a personal shopper, but Burns recommends getting a degree in a field like fashion merchandising, and then spending time at an apparel company like she did. “I think that’s one of the best routes, getting experience in the fashion world before doing it,” she says. “It definitely helps when you understand how designers do everything, how the stores work and how the buying process works. Then you’ll kind of know what’s going on.” ANGELA HAUPT (FOR EXPRESS)

The orphan Mowgli (Rohan Chand) fights for his survival growing up as part of a wolf pack.
This ‘Jungle’ isn’t for kids There’s no time for ‘Bare Necessities’ in Netflix’s dark take on Kipling’s classic tale STREAMING The road to the release of “Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle” has been a long and winding one. Although technically it’s the directorial debut of Andy Serkis, the actor known primarily for motion-capture roles, this hybrid of live action and motion-capture animation — an adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s “The Jungle Book” that has been seven years in the making — was delayed when Disney announced its own version of the same thing. That 2016 film, about an orphaned Indian boy, Mowgli, who is raised by wolves, went on to win the Oscar for visual effects. Serkis, meanwhile, directed 2017’s “Breathe” while his take languished. Serkis’ dark and decidedly
adult vision of Kipling’s children’s story finally arrived Friday on Netflix, where it is unlikely to be confused with the Disney film. Although “Mowgli” looks every bit as good as that version, “Mowgli” is more violent by a long shot, opening with the deaths of the title character’s parents, who are killed — and presumedly eaten — by the film’s main villain, the tiger Shere Khan (voice of Benedict Cumberbatch). Although that scene takes place largely off-screen, the attack leaves the infant Mowgli, who is rescued by the panther Bagheera (Christian Bale), smeared in his mother’s and father’s blood. While the lead role — nicely played by Rohan Chand, 10 during filming, and 14 now — belongs to a

child, the PG-13 “Mowgli” seems geared to a much older audience. Some of what makes “Mowgli” so grown-up is its unrelenting intensity: Shere Khan is the film’s No. 1 antagonist, but Mowgli is also threatened by the python Kaa (Cate Blanchett), the hyena Tabaqui (Tom Hollander) and even a human (Matthew Rhys),
a British hunter. There is no time for cheerful interludes singing “The Bare Necessities” with Baloo (Serkis), a bear tasked with training the pack’s cubs. Moreso even than the film’s violence and suspense, what sets “Mowgli” apart from other versions of this fable is its moral contradictions. Its hero is ethically challenged, undertaking actions that are questionable, even for a child who is still learning to navigate society. There are “laws” in this world of animals, and Mowgli breaks some with impunity. “Mowgli” feels like an origin story. Only here, the hero is a conflicted one — yet another character who is as compromised as these times demand. MICHAEL

Joy seeking joy: Irish comic finds humor in a hopeless place The delightful and often ribald screwball Irish comedy “Finding Joy” began streaming on Acorn TV this month. The titular Joy (Amy Huberman) is a young woman in a joyless state, since boyfriend Aidan (Lochlann O’Mearain) dumped her on the eve of their anniversary. Yet she’s unable to squeeze even out a single teardrop. In the tradition of wacky comedy, the plot spins absurdly. Joy goes off to her job as a copy editor for online media outlet News Today, and is unexpectedly summoned to see big boss Jeffrey (Mark Doherty). Star vlogger Flora (Laura Whitmore) has undergone “skin resurfacing” by a dental hygienist masquerading as a plastic surgeon, resulting in the loss of her nostrils. A replacement is needed. Joy protests that her job is dealing with verbs and prepositions. “I have a preposition for you,” says fatuous Jeffrey. You mean “proposition,” Joy corrects. So she replaces Flora as the “happy hunter,” exploring
how beleaguered people of the 21st century seek, well, joy. She starts by covering a group of folks who plan to bungee jump off an Irish stadium. And, in one of those coincidences that’s a part of the screwball comedy playbook, she runs into Aidan, who says he’s jumping into a new life. Commenting on it all is Joy’s neutered male dog (also named Aidan and voiced by Peter McDonald), who really, really does not want to soil Joy’s bedding. And yet, poop happens. Also the co-creator of the show, Irish comic Huberman uses expressive eyes and a klutzy demeanor to convey what a mean-spirited exec at News Today refers to as the “supreme vulnerability” of Joy. She’s the kind of woman who accidentally lets out a fart in front of her boss — and tries to cover up by making a trumpeting “ta-da” noise. That puts her in good company: Mindy Kaling broke new ground (and wind) with her frequent farts in “The Mindy Project.” Read Marc’s previous columns at washingtonpost.com/muse

trending “Twitter-searching ‘Kevin Hart gay’ didn’t take a masters in forensics or an earth-moving machine. His jokes were not a secret.” @MARKHARRISNYC, discussing the homophobic tweets by Kevin Hart that
led to him stepping down Friday as the host of the upcoming Academy Awards. In response to defenders of Hart who said his 2011 tweets had been dug up maliciously, many noted that it’s easy to find old tweets. Others said that given Hart’s initial refusal to atone — the Academy allegedly told him to apologize or step down — and the reality that LGBT people are vulnerable to violence, he should be held accountable for his past comments.
