A Gaza City eatery is offering steep discounts to North Korean diners — but there are no North Koreans known to be in the Palestinian territory. Ibrahim Raba, manager of a shawarma restaurant in the Jabaliya refugee camp, said he’s offering the 80 percent discount to show his appreciation for North Korea’s rejection of President Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Raba also put a photo of Kim Jong Un in the window. (AP)

Police said Thursday that a homeless man walked off with 300,000 euros ($354,000) he found at Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport. Video showed him leaning against a door to cash transport company Loomis last week. “To his surprise,” said an officer narrating the video, “he’s entering and finds there’s a huge amount of money.” Video also showed him leaving the airport with two big bags. Police recognized him and were trying to find him. (AP)

A rookie bomb-sniffing dog at Chicago’s Midway International Airport is having a little trouble getting acclimated. The contraband detection part is no problem, but the German shepherd has been pooping in the terminal. Kevin McCarthy, head of the Transportation Security Administration at Midway, said the 2-year-old is just months into the job and should get over the jitters. “It’s not going to ruin her career,” he said. D.C. goes gaga for Wawa

Popular chain’s first Washington store is its biggest yet, and fans couldn’t be happier

NEW YEAR’S SCHEDULE

Revelers can ride Metro until 2 a.m. FRITZ HAHN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

THE DISTRICT Those who know what a jughandle is and have used the word “jawn” are probably freaking out that D.C.’s first location of Wawa opened downtown Thursday. At the grand opening, a performer sang the national anthem and a string quartet provided a soundtrack. By lunchtime, fans had come out in droves (many of them wearing Phillies garb), and lines for hoagies snaked around the store. When a Wawa employee announced there was no wait at the build-your-own-salad station, the line didn’t budge. It took a Washington Post reporter 34 minutes to get his chicken parm sandwich. At more than 9,000 square feet, the new 24-hour location is the company’s largest yet. (You mad, Philly?) It features indoor and outdoor seating, a free air pump for bicyclists and complimentary Wi-Fi, plus a few modern updates, such as nitro cold-brew coffee and selfie screens that snap photos of guests. Previously, the closest location to D.C. was in College Park. Its closure in 2007 sparked looting and multiple laments from the

University of Maryland’s newspaper, The Diamondback. Fans of the chain get why this opening is such a big deal. Everyone else may need some help understanding. The convenience store first opened in Pennsylvania in 1964 and now has more than 780 locations in six states, primarily concentrated in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. Fans of

Wawa love it for its convenience, variety, food and, likely, the tug of nostalgia. Wawa’s made-to-order hoagies have garnered a cult following for their just-sliced cold cuts, ripe vegetables and cushy bread, which is made by Philadelphiabased Amoroso’s Bakery and baked fresh at each store. customizable. Ingredients include options not typically found at gas stations and corner stores, such as applewood smoked bacon, turkey sausage, spinach and cucumber slices. Sliced apples are available as a side. Despite those touches, a 10-inch Wawa sandwich starts at only $5.99. And — the bathrooms are always spotless. HOLLEY SIMMONS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Metro will stay open late on New Year’s Eve, in a move that will likely give revelers relief from surging ride-hailing prices after midnight. WMATA announced Thursday that Metro will stay open until 2 a.m. from New Year’s Eve into New Year’s Day. It will charge typical offpeak fares. In 2016 and 2015, Metro offered free rides on New Year’s Eve from midnight till 3 a.m. through a partnership with the Miller Lite Free Rides program. No such partnership has been announced yet for this year. (EXPRESS)

Problem on Red Line could have led to crash

Recent testing finds defects similar to what led to fatal ’09 collision

TRANSPORTATION Metro officials revealed Thursday that this week’s Red Line disruptions and coming weekend shutdown stem from defects in the line’s signal system that could potentially have led to a crash similar to the fatal 2009 train collision near Fort Totten. A recent audit and emergency testing in the past week found deteriorating insulation on the electrical cables used as part of Metro’s signal system — the network of electrical circuits that communicate the location of trains on the tracks — causing the cables to leak electricity in the stretch between the Brookland and Takoma stations. Such leaking could lead to “bobbing circuits,” when the electrical current indicating a train’s presence on the track flickers on and off — basically making it disappear. A rare type of bobbing circuit caused two Red Line trains to collide in June

Similar issues that caused a fatal crash in 2009 have arisen on the Red Line.

2009, killing nine people. In this case, Metro officials said at Thursday’s board meeting, there were no indications from front line employees that problems were detected on that stretch of the Red Line — no trains mysteriously vanishing and reappearing from the display at the Rail Operations Control Center, no malfunctioning speed controls visible to train operators, nothing that would indicate there was an urgent problem on the tracks. Still, recent tests on the signal

cables demonstrated there is a small chance that worn insulation would allow a train to “disappear” from the Automatic Train Control tracking system. To compensate, Metro has been running the affected segment of the Red Line in a pattern known as “absolute block,” with only one train running at a time on each segment, in each direction, from Brookland to Fort Totten and from Fort Totten to Takoma since last weekend. The Baltimore Sun reports the decision on Thursday more than doubles the number of businesses allowed to sell the drug in the state. Still, regulators cautioned that the supply is still low. That means it could be hard to buy marijuana until at least March. More than 18,000 people have registered to become medical marijuana patients so far, and another 5,000 registration requests are still pending. (AP)

MONTGOMERY COUNTY The eight Democrats vying to be Maryland’s next governor came to Montgomery County on Thursday to urge more funding for school construction and mass transit, but offered few details about how they would pay for it. Speaking to a large audience at a breakfast forum in Maryland’s most populous jurisdiction, the contenders faulted Republican Gov. Larry Hogan, the man they hope to oust, for misplaced priorities. They condemned his $9 billion plan to add toll lanes to the Capital Beltway, Interstate 270 and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, calling it impractical and outdated. The hour-long event, in which the candidates responded to questions from a moderator, did not reveal differences among them over the issues. When asked whether they would support legislation to provide dedicated funding for Metro, for example, all eight said “yes” or flashed a thumbs-up. “I don’t think you’ll hear much disagreement from us this morning,” Ben Jealous, former president of the NAACP, said in his

opening comments. But the forum offered an early glimpse at the subjects that will shape the race, particularly education and transportation. The candidates said Hogan was neglecting the needs of the Washington suburbs and the Baltimore area, the state’s principal Democratic strongholds. “Right now, you’ve got a governor who is the self-proclaimed king of highways,” said Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz. “He’s against mass transit, he killed the [light-rail] Red Line in Baltimore. He watered down the [light-rail] Purple Line so now it’s the Lavender Line.” The candidates, in addition to Jealous and Kamenetz, are: tech entrepreneur Alec Ross; Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker III; state Sen. Richard S. Madaleno Jr., Montgomery; Krishanti Vignarajah, a former policy aide to Michelle Obama; Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, founder of Global Policy Solutions and wife of U.S. Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, D-Md.; and James Shea, an attorney and former chair of Venable LLP. The Committee for Montgomery, the civic group that hosted the event, said it invited Hogan to attend, but he declined.

GOP delegate wins seat after recount VIRGINIA Virginia state Del. Timothy D. Hugo, R-Fairfax, prevailed in the first of four scheduled election recounts that will determine which party holds power in the House of Delegates, leaving Democrats to stake their hopes on the remaining races, whose outcomes will be determined next week. After Democrat Donte Tanner gained a net of seven votes, Hugo’s lead dropped to 99 votes at the end of a two-day recount inside Fairfax County’s Circuit Court that, despite the high stakes, went smoothly and with little partisan friction. A Democratic surge in November left Republicans with a 51-49 majority in the House, infusing extra tension into the mostly tedious process of recounting the elections that were too close to call. Roughly 30,000 ballots from both Fairfax and Prince William counties were recounted in the 40th District race. In the end, the results showed Tanner gaining a total of 14 extra votes and Hugo gaining seven. Six ballots were initially contested after it was unclear what those voters intended, but

Tanner said he accepted the results and praised election workers for a thorough job. “It was a fair race; it was a hard-fought one, and I’m glad we got to go through this experience,” Tanner said. The result leaves three more opportunities for Democrats to tip the House in their favor. A recount for the closest election, in the Newport News area, is scheduled for Tuesday. There, Del. David Yancey, R, holds a 10-vote advantage over Democrat Shelly Simonds. ANTONIO OLIVO (THE WASHINGTON POST)

RICHARD DREW (AP)

MEDIA The Walt Disney Company, an entertainment firm as sprawling as one of its landmark theme parks, has pulled off one of the largest media mergers in history by acquiring the majority of assets from rival 21st Century Fox. The announcement resets the Hollywood power grid. Disney, the nation’s largest studio by box office returns and the company behind the Marvel and “Star Wars” franchises, is acquiring Fox, the third-largest studio by that metric, known for the blockbuster “X-Men” and “Avatar” franchises. It also brings brands such as FX, National Geographic and “The Simpsons” into the same fold as ESPN and ABC — all part of Disney’s gamble that a beefed-up company will be better equipped to tackle a slew of Silicon Valley giants. Disney will pay $52.4 billion for Fox, which for its part will spin off Fox broadcast networks, the Fox News Channel and Fox Business Channel, the Fox studio lot in Los Angeles and several national sports channels, leaving them in the hands of 21st Century Fox chairman Rupert Murdoch and his family. Robert Iger, the chairman and chief executive of Disney who

had been discussed as a potential 2020 presidential candidate, will continue with the combined firm. The announcement takes two media and entertainment titans and essentially divides up territory between them. Iger will lead the legacy-entertainment charge against a slew of new competitors, while Murdoch will attempt to fend off the challenge on another front, as the business of news and live programming face challenges from digital upstarts. As part of the all-stock deal, Disney will also acquire Fox’s 30 percent stake in Hulu, a group of U.S. cable stations including FX and National Geographic, several powerhouse international satellite channels such as Star

India and Sky Italia, and a host of U.S. regional sports outlets. The deal makes Disney a behemoth of the type entertainment has never seen and sets the stage for a battle with Silicon Valley titans like Netflix, Apple and Google. The conglomerate is building up scale in the hope of fending off those firms’ forays into the content market; it is also stockpiling content for a new streaming service that it hopes will stem a tide of cord-cutting that has afflicted properties like ESPN. Regulators and shareholders must still approve the Disney-Fox deal, but analysts do not expect it to face problems. STEVEN ZEITCHIK (THE WASHINGTON POST)

A record-tying eighth planet has been found in a faraway solar system, tying with ours for the most planets observed around a single star, NASA and Google announced Thursday. Machines — not humans — made the discovery: Google used data collected by NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope to develop a machinelearning computer program. The new planet, Kepler-90i, orbits the star known as Kepler-90, 2,545 light-years away. Like Earth, this planet is the third rock from its sun. But it’s closer to its sun — orbiting in just 14 days — and therefore 800 degrees Fahrenheit. In fact, all eight planets orbit the star closer than Earth does our sun. It’s believed to be the first time an artificial network has been used to find a new world. (AP)

FCC ends net neutrality

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai argued Thursday that the government’s net neutrality rules unfairly treat internet providers like a traditional utility service.

CAROLYN KASTER (AP)

TECHNOLOGY Federal regulators voted Thursday to allow internet providers to speed up service for some apps and websites — and block or slow down others — in a decision repealing landmark, Obama-era regulations for broadband companies such as Comcast, AT&T and Verizon. The move to deregulate the telecom and cable industry is a major setback for tech companies, consumer groups and Democrats, who lobbied heavily against the decision. And it marks a significant victory for Republicans, who vowed to roll back the efforts of the prior administration, despite a recent survey showing that 83 percent of Americans — including 3 out of 4 Republicans — opposed the plan. Led by Chairman Ajit Pai, the Federal Communications Commission on Thursday followed through on a promise to repeal the government’s 2015 net neutrality rules, which sought to force internet providers to treat all online services, large and small, equally. Pai and the FCC’s two other GOP members also went a step further, rejecting much of its own authority over broadband in a bid to stymie future FCC officials who might seek to regulate providers. “The digital world bears no resemblance to a water pipe or an electric line or a sewer,” said Pai, arguing that the rules unfairly treated internet providers like a traditional utility service. The result is a comprehensive redrawing of the FCC’s oversight powers in the digital age, at a time of rapid transformation in the media and technology sectors.

JACQUELYN MARTIN (AP)

Decision to deregulate lets internet providers play favorites with sites

Lindsay Chestnut of Baltimore and about 60 other demonstrators Thursday in Washington, D.C., protest the FCC’s decision to end net neutrality.

Consumer advocates fear that certain freedoms could be curtailed in a world where internet providers are legally permitted to give preferential treatment to sites they own or share commercial relationships with, and to discriminate against apps they do not like. For example, under the net neutrality rules, Verizon was not allowed to favor Yahoo and AOL, which it owns, by blocking Google. In addition, Verizon was not allowed to charge Google extra fees in order to connect to Verizon customers. Under the new rules, that type of behavior would be legal, as long as Verizon disclosed it. Some

Battle not over yet? The FCC vote Thursday is unlikely to be the final word on net neutrality. Opponents of the move plan legal challenges, with New York’s attorney general vowing to lead a multistate lawsuit, and some hope to make it an issue in the 2018 midterm elections. There is also some hope that Congress might overturn the FCC decision. Mark Stanley, a spokesman for the civil liberties organization Demand Progress, said there is a “good chance” Congress could reverse it. “The fact that Chairman Pai went through with this, a policy that is so unpopular, is somewhat shocking,” Stanley said. “Unfortunately, not surprising.” (AP)

Italy’s Senate approves living wills amid long-running euthanasia debate

analysts say affected content companies could pass any new network costs to internet users, and that internet providers will develop new ways to market internet service that could lead to higher prices. “You and I and everyone else who uses the internet for personal use will see some changes in pricing models,” wrote Glenn O’Donnell, an industry analyst at the research firm Forrester, in an email. “For most of us, I expect we will pay more. Service bundles (e.g., social media package, streaming video package) will likely be bolted on to basic transport for things like web surfing and email.” Internet providers vigorously contest that prediction. They argue there is no financial incentive to penalize specific apps or services, that giving some sites the option of faster service could in fact benefit consumers, and that the new rules allow the Federal Trade Commission to sue carriers that act anticompetitively. Consumers’ daily internet experience will be the same “next week, next month and next year,” industry officials promised on a conference call Wednesday. The officials also said the 2015 rules discouraged providers from making broadband faster and more reliable, according to the industry. USTelecom, a trade group representing AT&T, Verizon and others, said that annual broadband infrastructure spending fell from $78.4 billion in 2014, before the rules took effect, to $76 billion in 2016. With Thursday’s decision, “this country will return to a rational regulatory framework similar to the one that capably governed the internet for decades,” said AT&T in a blog post Wednesday. Marco Rubio informed Senate leaders Thursday that he intends to vote against Republicans’ $1.5 trillion tax plan unless it includes a larger expansion of a child tax credit. “I understand that this is a process of give-and-take,” Rubio, R-Fla., said Thursday. “But given all the other changes made in the tax code leading into it, I can’t in good conscience support it unless we are able to increase [the child tax credit].” Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, Rubio’s partner in pushing for the expanded child tax credit, is undecided on whether to support the Republicans’ final tax bill, a Lee spokesman said. Republicans control 52 of the Senate’s 100 seats, and they need 50 to pass their bill, with Vice President Pence potentially breaking a tie. Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., voted no on the Senate version and is expected to vote against the final bill. No Democrats are backing the measure, meaning that if two Republicans join the opposition to the tax package, the party will lack the votes it needs. Rubio and Lee want to allow millions of families who pay payroll taxes but do not earn enough to pay income taxes to claim the expanded credit. The change Rubio and Lee endorse would expand the credit by $80 billion over 10 years, a smaller change than they previously proposed for the Senate bill.

nation+world Haley says recovered missile fragments prove Tehran’s UN violations FOREIGN POLICY President Trump’s envoy to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, says “undeniable” evidence proves Iran is violating international law by funneling missiles to Houthi rebels in Yemen. Fragments recovered from missiles launched from Yemen were paraded before reporters Thursday at a hangar at a military base not far from the U.S. Capitol. Haley said the truck-sized missile segment behind her had targeted the international airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and “led the U.S. intelligence community

to conclude unequivocally that these weapons were supplied by the Iranian regime.” “This is absolutely terrifying,” said Haley. “Just imagine if this missile had been launched at Dulles Airport or JFK, or the airports in Paris, London or Berlin.” The newly declassified evidence marked the most aggressive U.S. effort to date to substantiate its claim that Iran funnels weapons to the Houthis, an allegation widely accepted by most countries but that Tehran steadfastly denies. It comes as the Trump administration seeks to rally the world to punish Iran for its ballistic missile program and other worrying activities, despite backing away from the 2015 nuclear deal.

U.S.: Iran is arming Houthis

Ambassador Nikki Haley speaks Thursday about segments recovered from an Iranian rocket.

“Everyone has focused on the nuclear deal, and Iran has hidden behind the nuclear deal,” Haley said. Gesturing to the missiles,

she said, “These are the things they’re doing while we’re all looking the other way.” Haley and other officials said some of the missiles have specific markings indicating they were manufactured in Iran, and others bear specific technical characteristics of Iranian missiles. Iran’s government stands behind its assertion that Iran hasn’t sent any missiles to Yemen, where Shiite Houthi rebels aligned with Iran have taken over much of the country. Iran’s envoy to the U.N., Gholamali Khoshroo, said it was “fake and fabricated” evidence that illustrates America’s “irresponsible, destructive and provocative role” in the region, according to a statement. Rep. Blake Farenthold, R-Texas, a congressman under scrutiny for allegations that he sexually harassed female staff members and created a hostile work environment, announced Thursday that will not seek re-election next year. Farenthold, who settled a complaint with his former communications director but denied wrongdoing, plans to serve the rest of his term but won’t run in 2018, he announced in a video posted to Facebook. His decision makes him the sixth lawmaker to fall over allegations of misconduct as Congress grapples with how to address what some aides have described as a culture of inappropriate behavior on Capitol Hill. Farenthold, who represents the 27th Congressional District along the Texas Gulf Coast, including Corpus Christi, apologized Thursday in the fiveminute video. “I allowed a workplace culture to take root in my office that was too permissive and decidedly unprofessional,” he said. “It accommodated destructive gossip, offhand comments, off-color jokes … and I allowed the personal stress of the job to manifest itself in angry outbursts.” House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said he supported Farenthold’s decision. Racial bias in drug stings? CHICAGO The question of whether federal agents display racial bias by staging phony drug stash-house stings overwhelmingly in black neighborhoods is the focus of hearings in Chicago that could determine whether agencies curtail or even abandon their use nationwide. A first-of-its-kind panel of federal trial judges on Thursday began two days of hearings on the stings. The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives oversees the stings, which typically involve agents posing as cartel couriers who talk suspects into agreeing to rob drugs that don’t exist from what they are told are guarded stash houses that are also fictitious. The nine panelists — each of whom is presiding over 12 separate stash-house cases with 43 defendants in all — chose to hear evidence simultaneously on the question after defense teams in the dozen cases all moved for the indictments to be tossed on grounds of racial bias. How the judges rule in coming weeks — and they could submit

a single ruling — is expected to influence how courts around the country deal with similar claims about the stings, which have been a favorite tool of federal law enforcement dating back to the 1990s. Rulings in Chicago could also encourage the U.S. Supreme Court to take up the issue. Among the panelists is Ruben Castillo, whose ruling in 2013 that there’s a “strong showing of potential bias” in the stings generated years of legal motions

Tavis Smiley suspended by PBS, vows to fight back

Study: Fracking may raise risk of underweight babies

PBS has suspended host Tavis Smiley after finding what it called “troubling allegations” of sexual misconduct. The Public Broadcasting Service said Wednesday an independent investigation uncovered “multiple, credible allegations” of misconduct. Smiley shot back on Facebook, saying PBS “overreacted” and calling it “a rush to judgment.” He claimed one relationship the network uncovered was consensual. (AP)

Living within a half-mile of a hydraulic fracturing site carries a serious risk for pregnant women, a new study has found. Women who lived within that distance to fracking operations in Pennsylvania were 25 percent more likely to give birth to low-weight infants than were mothers who lived more than 2 miles from the sites. The study analyzed over 1.1 million births in the state from 2004 and 2013. (TWP)

and dueling expert reports — culminating in this week’s hearings. He ruled just weeks after he was sworn in as the federal court’s first Hispanic chief judge. Stash-house stings have been criticized on other grounds, including for the way agents dangle the prospect of pocketing tens of thousands of dollars to often poor, desperate subjects. Some courts have warned the stings risk crossing the line into illegally entrapping suspects.

Authorities insist they’re careful not to entrap anyone, targeting only those with records of violent crimes and who say unequivocally they want in on armed robberies. The answer to the question of whether the stings discriminate by race hinges largely on competing interpretations of statistics. Defense lawyers say the fact that about 80 percent of stings are conducted in predominantly African-American neighborhoods speaks for itself. Their main witness is Jeffrey Fagan, a professor at Columbia Law School. In his report for defense lawyers, he notes that out of 94 stash-house defendants in the Chicago area between 2006 and 2013, 74 were black, 12 were Hispanic and just eight were white. That and other data, he writes, proves a “pattern of discrimination.” But government lawyers say it’s only natural that traffickingrelated stings are focused where trafficking activity is highest — in low-income areas on Chicago’s South and West sides. Fagan’s report, they contend in one filing, “is riddled with false assumptions ... designed to manufacture a racial disparity where none exists.” MICHAEL TARM (AP)

Study: Media misrepresent black families Major media outlets routinely present a distorted picture of black families — portraying them as dependent and dysfunctional — while white families are more likely to be depicted as sources of social stability, according to a report released Wednesday by Color of Change, a racial justice organization, and Family Story, an advocate of diverse family arrangements. Researchers reviewed more than 800 local and national news stories published or aired between January 2015 and December 2016. Black families represent 59 percent of the poor portrayed in the media, the analysis said, but account for just 27 percent of Americans in poverty. White families make up 17 percent of the poor depicted in news media, but make up 66 percent of the American poor, the study said. Black people are also nearly three times more likely than whites to be portrayed as dependent on welfare and represent 37 percent of criminals shown in the news, but constitute 26 percent of those arrested on criminal charges, the study said. “There are dire consequences for black people when these outlandish archetypes rule the day: abusive treatment by police, less attention from doctors, harsher sentences from judges,” Rashad Robinson, executive director of Color of Change, wrote in the report. Jay Gruden’s leadership has come into question after the team looked flat in defeats.

REDSKINS VS. CARDINALS | 1 P.M. SUNDAY, FOX

Prepared to fight back Gruden resolves to move past losses, in-house drama as players vow to compete NFL Standing behind the lectern, Redskins coach Jay Gruden delivered his directive. The team is done revisiting the embarrassing results of the past two weeks and instead is focused on salvaging what’s left of another disappointing season. “We cannot — cannot — dwell on the past of the last two games. We can’t,” he stressed Wednesday. “You’re going to wallow in it and you’re going to continue to suffer. We’ve got to move on and we will.” Days after a defeated Gruden said he had regressed as a coach following Washington’s 30-13 loss to the Chargers, he emerged with a defiant, forceful spirit. He tried to quell the increasing talk of the Redskins’ supposed

lack of preparedness — a complaint lodged by D.J. Swearinger, a veteran safety and team captain. “We just didn’t go out there and perform in a way we would like to have,” Gruden said. “But as far as being prepared, I don’t really buy into all that.” Gruden’s job status was immediately called into question in the wake of the loss to the Chargers. But Swearinger’s postgame comments about “blah” practices and lack of game-week preparation raised even more questions about the direction of the team. But even with a 5-8 record and a two-game losing streak, Gruden insisted his team is mentally in a good place. “We’re blessed with three games left, and we’re going to

coach the heck out of these guys, and I know they’re going to play hard,” he said. The Redskins see Sunday’s home game against the Cardinals (6-7) as an opportunity to reset and focus on finishing on a positive note. Players have dismissed any notion that their locker room

is in danger of fracturing. “It’s easy to keep things together because if you don’t, in this league, you’ll get embarrassed,” safety DeAngelo Hall said. “… You’ve got to play for pride at the end of the day. Because if anybody on the other side senses a weakness, they’ll exploit it.” Even with the playoffs no longer a possibility, tight end Niles Paul agreed that the Redskins have plenty of reasons to keep competing hard. “We want to win out,” he said. “That has been the goal. And we realize that this season, we haven’t accomplished everything we wanted to, but we’re still NFL players, and we still have a job to do.” KIMBERLEY A. MARTIN

After back-to-back losses dropped them to 5-8 and ramped up the pressure for the final three games, the Redskins need to stanch the bleeding at home Sunday against the Cardinals. (EXPRESS)

3 Strong pass rusher The Redskins did well to limit the Chargers to two sacks of Kirk Cousins last week, but this week they have to contain Chandler Jones, who leads the NFL with 14 sacks.

2 Ageless wonder At 34, Larry Fitzgerald needs just 78 yards receiving to reach 1,000 for the ninth time. Meanwhile, Redskins CB Josh Norman (knee) was limited in practice Thursday.

1 Actions speak louder A frustrated D.J. Swearinger said last week that his teammates didn’t know the game plan. Criticizing others brings scrutiny on the safety to play flawlessly himself.

Brown’s status uncertain for Sunday

Redskins linebacker Zach Brown missed practice for a second straight day Thursday, leaving his status for Sunday against the Cardinals up in the air. Brown, who was spotted in a walking boot Thursday, was absent because of an illness and toe, Achilles and hip injuries. Coach Jay Gruden said it “would probably be OK” for Brown to play, even if he’s able to get on the field only once during the week. Brown, 28, leads the NFL with 127 tackles this season. (TWP)

Brandon Kintzler will be back as a reliable option to set up Ryan Madson and Sean Doolittle.

finished last season with a 3.03 ERA in 72 appearances, 27 of which came with the Nationals. He’ll likely be utilized in the seventh inning again this season, serving as a complement to the much-harder-throwing Madson and lefty Doolittle, giving the Nationals a back-end trio the likes of which they have not had on opening day in years. Washington’s urgency to add a proven righty grew as the free agent reliever market accelerated and proved to be an expensive place to shop. Among the more talkedabout signings was the Phillies’ deal with right-hander Tommy Hunter, who will make $18 million over two years. Hunter wasn’t

considered to be nearly on the level of, say, right-hander Brandon Morrow, but will make just $2 million less per year than the Cubs’ new closer. Pat Neshek, whom the Phillies traded to the Rockies last year, signed back in Philadelphia for two years and $16 million. Luke Gregerson signed for two years and $11 million with St. Louis. Agents of relievers sense that the Nats think highly of Wade Davis, but his price tag — estimated to be four years and $60 million — might be too high. Another man likely to command late-inning money and push for a longer deal, right-hander Addison Reed, was also still available as of Thursday. CHELSEA JANES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

MLB Early Thursday morning, as the bars at the hotel in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., cleared out and the winter meetings slid toward a close, the Nationals agreed to a deal with right-handed reliever Brandon Kintzler, according to a person familiar with the situation. With incentives, the deal is worth up to $16 million over the next two seasons. Kintzler is due $5 million in 2018 and has a player option for $5 million more in 2019. That offers him $10 million guaranteed over two years. The agreement came after midnight Wednesday. After a run on relievers left the Nationals with dwindling options to fill their need for right-handed middle relief, they decided to bring back the former Twins closer they acquired at last year’s trade deadline and slotted into a seventh-inning role ahead of Ryan Madson and Sean Doolitle. Other teams expressed interest in Kintzler, 33, to be their closer, but he chose to return to D.C. Advanced metrics are not kind to Kintzler, who relies less on swings and misses than nearly all late-inning relief types, instead utilizing a biting sinker to get ground balls on demand. He

He’s been playing with a bulging disk that’s kept him out of practice for nearly four weeks. Dallas (7-6) has to win out to have a shot at a wild card, and Collins has to match up with pass-rushing terror Khalil Mack (8.5 sacks).

All 39 bowl games, from best to worst

Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield will have his hands full against Georgia’s defense in the Rose Bowl.

There are two ways to approach bowl season, which has been trimmed from 40 contests to 39 with the demise of the Poinsettia Bowl. You can grumble about how there are too many games, or you can pick and choose the most enjoyable matchups and ignore those whose greatest utility is providing a few hours of programming for ESPN. Two games — the national semifinals — have way more big-picture meaning than the other 37. But “relatively unimportant” and “fun” are not mutually exclusive, and there are some potential gems involving 6-6 and 7-5 teams. No team is less intimidated by the Crimson Tide than Dabo Swinney’s top-seeded Tigers. Alabama fended off Clemson for the national title two years ago, but Clemson returned the favor last year when it won the championship in the final seconds.

This matchup of conference runnersup should exceed expectations. Stanford’s Bryce Love will look to go over 2,000 yards rushing against a TCU defense that ranks fourth nationally against the run.

The Hurricanes dropped their past two after entering Thanksgiving undefeated and are now down their top rusher (Mark Walton) and best deep threat (Ahmmon Richards). Wisconsin’s playoff dreams died with a Big Ten title game loss to Ohio State.

If Georgia’s defense can’t slow down Oklahoma’s Heisman-winning QB Baker Mayfield, who can? That may be the best offense-vs.-defense matchup of the postseason. The run-heavy Bulldogs offense against a spotty OU defense isn’t as exciting.

This will probably be the last college game for Louisville QB and 2016 Heisman winner Lamar Jackson. The matchup takes a mild hit with freshman Keytaon Thompson likely to start in place of Bulldogs QB Nick Fitzgerald (dislocated ankle).

Stop if you’ve heard this one before: The Mountaineers and Rockets are playing a postseason game in Alabama. They did last year in a 31-28 App. State win in a Camellia Bowl that lived up to expectations.

The first game of bowl season is a pretty strong matchup between the Conference USA runners-up (North Texas) and the Sun Belt co-champs (Troy). North Texas coach Seth Littrell and Troy’s Neal Brown are destined for higher-profile gigs.

The Big Ten and Pac-12 champs are meeting as usual, but it is three days early and two time zones away from the Rose Bowl. These may be the best teams not in the playoff. 4 FIESTA BOWL

Penn State vs. Washington

8 CITRUS BOWL

12 LAS VEGAS BOWL

Dec. 30, 4 p.m., ESPN

LSU vs. Notre Dame

Boise State vs. Oregon

Three months ago, this looked like it could be a playoff pairing. It will still be a great game as long as the Huskies don’t sputter like the last time they visited the Grand Canyon State; Washington suffered a 13-7 loss at Arizona State on Oct. 14.

Jan. 1, 1 p.m., ABC

Saturday, 3:30 p.m., ABC

Ed Orgeron’s Tigers land in Orlando for the second consecutive season in this showdown of 9-3 teams. It’s the second bowl matchup in four seasons for these name-brand programs.

Boise State is a combined 9-5 since 2004 against Pac-12 schools from Oregon and Washington, including 2-0 against the Ducks. With a healthy Justin Herbert at QB, Oregon stands a chance to change that in Sin City.

District attorney: Rodney Anderson, Oklahoma’s leading rusher, won’t be charged for alleged sex assault

14 HOLIDAY BOWL

Mich. State vs. Wash. State

16 ARMED FORCES BOWL

Dec. 28, 9 p.m., Fox Sports 1

Army vs. San Diego State

This is a perfect pairing of 9-3 teams. Michigan State returns to the postseason after a one-year hiatus. Washington State returns to San Diego after laying one of the bigger eggs of last year’s bowls, a 17-12 loss to a Minnesota program that faced a player mutiny only weeks earlier.

Dec. 23, 3:30 p.m., ESPN

Between Army’s triple option and San Diego State star tailback Rashaad Penny, the ball won’t spend much time in the air. That’s OK, because this promises to be one of the more entertaining preChristmas bowl games.

Central Michigan vs. Wyoming

Louisiana Tech vs. SMU

Dec. 22, 12:30 p.m., ESPN

Dec. 22, 4 p.m., ESPN

Wednesday, 8 p.m., ESPN

UAB’s comeback — shut down as a program after the 2014 season, then resurrected before resuming play this fall — is the game’s big headline. But it’s also a matchup of 8-4 teams in an exotic bowl that hasn’t produced a dud since its debut in 2014.

The Chippewas are the eighth different MAC school in the past nine years to play on the Smurf Turf. Wyoming QB Josh Allen, a potential first-round pick who is expected to turn pro, plans to play after missing two games with a shoulder sprain.

This isn’t a new game, just the relocated Miami Beach Bowl. This will be a de facto home game for SMU, which makes its first bowl appearance since 2012 and will travel 25 miles to the northern Dallas suburbs to face the Bulldogs.

22 SUN BOWL

28 BELK BOWL

34 QUICK LANE BOWL

Texas A&M vs. Wake Forest

Duke vs. Northern Illinois

Dec. 29, 3 p.m., CBS

Dec. 29, 1 p.m., ESPN

Dec. 26, 5:15 p.m., ESPN

It’s the final game at Arizona State for fired coach Todd Graham, and the last game at N.C. State for tight end/running back Jaylen Samuels.

While Wake isn’t the most enticing opponent for the Aggies, durable Demon Deacon senior QB John Wolford will challenge Texas A&M.

This marks Northern Illinois’ seventh trip in eight seasons to Detroit’s Ford Field; it split six Mid-American title games there from 2010 to 2015.

23 MILITARY BOWL

Colorado State vs. Marshall

FIU vs. Temple

Dec. 28, 1:30 p.m., ESPN

Saturday, 4:30 p.m., ESPN

Dec. 21, 8 p.m., ESPN

Let’s just call it the George Welsh Bowl in honor of Virginia’s career leader in coaching victories. The Navy graduate also ranks second in Midshipmen history in games won, behind only coach Ken Niumatalolo.

There’s one excellent reason for draftniks to take a peek at this one: Colorado State WR Michael Gallup heads into his final college game with 94 catches for 1,345 yards and seven touchdowns as a senior.

The former St. Petersburg Bowl is named for legendary — and perhaps fictional — pirate Jose Gaspar.

24 OUTBACK BOWL

30 BOCA RATON BOWL

Michigan vs. South Carolina

Akron at Florida Atlantic

Jan. 1, noon, ESPN2

Tuesday, 7 p.m., ESPN

Michigan ranks 101st nationally in total offense; South Carolina is 108th. In other words, this isn’t the game to perk you up after a long night on New Year’s Eve.

Lane Kiffin’s host Owls have won nine in a row and are ninth nationally in scoring. Akron is 7-6 and the only bowl-bound team it beat was Ohio, but the Zips did beat two 6-6 teams.

17 LIBERTY BOWL

19 HAWAII BOWL

Iowa State at Memphis

Fresno State vs. Houston

Dec. 30, 12:30 p.m., ABC

Dec. 24, 8:30 p.m., ESPN

The Liberty Bowl’s been played in Memphis since 1965. This is the Tigers’ first trip to their hometown game. But a fair number of Iowa State fans should make the trip for the Cyclones’ first bowl game since a Liberty Bowl loss to Tulsa in 2012.

After inheriting a 1-11 mess, former California coach Jeff Tedford led Fresno State to a 9-4 mark and a trip to the Mountain West title game. Figuring out how to block Houston DT Ed Oliver makes the Hawaiian vacation less attractive.

18 BIRMINGHAM BOWL

20 TEXAS BOWL

South Florida vs. Texas Tech

Missouri vs. Texas

Dec. 23, noon, ESPN

Dec. 27, 9 p.m., ESPN

QB Quinton Flowers and the Bulls make their second consecutive trip to Birmingham after last year’s 46-39 overtime barn burner over South Carolina. Texas Tech sneaked into the postseason after beating Texas to close the regular season.

An old Big 12 series is renewed in Houston in what has the potential to be a far better game than the respective records — Missouri at 7-5, Texas at 6-6 — indicate. The Tigers closed the season on a six-game win streak behind QB Drew Lock.

Pitt sophomore QB Ben DiNucci announces plans to transfer

25 MUSIC CITY BOWL

31 CACTUS BOWL

Kentucky vs. Northwestern

Kansas State vs. UCLA

Dec. 29, 4:30 p.m., ESPN

Dec. 26, 9 p.m., ESPN

It’s a Wildcat wrangle in Nashville, as well as a ground-and-pound special. Running back Benny Snell rushed for 1,318 yards for Kentucky. Northwestern — winner of seven in a row — counters with an offense led by RB Justin Jackson (1,154 yards).

Before the Chip Kelly era begins, the Josh Rosen era (likely) ends for UCLA, which hasn’t won a game away from home all season and will try to beat the Wildcats in a bowl for the second time in four seasons. The Bruins edged K-State in a testy Alamo Bowl in 2014.

New Mexico State makes its first bowl trip since 1960 just as it is getting booted from the Sun Belt. 37 INDEPENDENCE BOWL

Florida St. vs. Southern Miss. Dec. 27, 1:30 p.m., ESPN

The 6-6 Seminoles’ bowl streak remains alive at 36 after some shrewd late-season rescheduling, but there’s not a lot going for this one. 38 CAMELLIA BOWL

Arkansas St. vs. Middle Tenn. Saturday, 8 p.m., ESPN

Arkansas State’s Justice Hansen leads the nation’s No. 6 passing offense and has thrown for 3,630 yards, 34 touchdowns and 15 interceptions this season.

26 PINSTRIPE BOWL

Boston College vs. Iowa

32 HEART OF DALLAS BOWL

39 CURE BOWL

Dec. 27, 5:15 p.m., ESPN

Utah vs. West Virginia

Georgia St. vs. W. Kentucky

Both teams are averaging fewer than 400 yards per game, so defense will be on the menu in the Bronx. Get a good look at RB AJ Dillon — a one-time Michigan commit, the ACC’s freshman of the year and the centerpiece for Boston College’s power-rushing attack for the next couple of years.

Dec. 26, 1:30 p.m., ESPN

Saturday, 2:30 p.m., CBSSN

The Utes made it to 6-6 with a rout of Colorado to close the season. West Virginia lost QB Will Grier (broken finger) for most of its final two games and is likely to be without him again. This is the power conference matchup likely to create the least buzz.

A first-year coach — Georgia State’s Shawn Elliott or Western Kentucky’s Mike Sanford — is going to cap the season with a victory. But at the end of the day, it’s a 6-5 team (Georgia State) against a 6-6 team (Western Kentucky) in mid-December. Not exactly appointment viewing.

Junior WR Seth Collins (illness/injuries) granted release from Oregon State after playing in just 3 games this season

f you want to share your space with a puppy, you should know there’s a lot to consider when it comes to safety. Puppies want to get into everything and they don’t understand that many things are hazardous to them. While it’s easier to puppy-proof an apartment than a large home, there are still things you need to think about before your new pup crosses the threshold.

Clean Up If your new pup can put it in their mouth, they probably will. That stray button in your bedroom? Yep. A wayward piece of food behind the garbage can? Of course. A thorough cleaning of your apartment before you bring your new pup home is a must. And don’t worry if cleaning up is something you’re not used to—you’ll be a pro soon, because puppies can be messy!

Secure Hazards Puppies love to chew, and they don’t know that electrical cords are something they should definitely not chew on. It’s up to you to make sure electrical cords are off the ground if possible, or

that there’s no access to them in the first place. Also, consider the placement of lamps and other things that could fall off a table—and on to a curious pup.

Think About Areas Your Puppy Isn’t Allowed Whether it’s the kitchen or the bathroom, chances are there will be a room or two you don’t want your puppy in. Luckily, baby gates aren’t just for babies. If you don’t want to constantly remember to shut doors, or if the room you want off-limits doesn’t even have doors, baby gates are the perfect option.

Check Out Your Plants If you’re prone to keeping plants to make your space look pretty, take a good look at a list of plants that are toxic to dogs. There are likely many more than you think, and any toxic plants should be moved to an area your pup can’t access.

Consider Your Outside Area Apartment living doesn’t often include your own outdoor space, but you can still be vigilant

about hazards in the area where you’ll be taking your pup for potty breaks. This includes checking for trash on the ground each time you go out and knowing whether or not your pup’s favorite bush to chew on is dog friendly.

Replace or Move Trashcans Trash? Chances are your pup thinks of it as “extra dinner.” Consider buying a trashcan with a lid to help your pup resist temptation, and don’t forget about smaller trash cans in bathrooms or bedrooms, which can also be an attractive option. Also, remember to keep your dog food either out of reach in a cupboard, pantry, or plastic container to prevent your hungry lil’ pup from ripping open the bag. All of this might sound exhausting, but remember: Puppies are hard work! Yes, they’re adorable and cuddly and look cute in your Instagram photos, but they also want to eat anything, go to the bathroom everywhere, and chew on your favorite shoes. It’s up to you to keep them safe, especially in those first few days when exploring will be at the top of their to-do list. n By Elizabeth Xu for Apartment Showcase

‘Jedi’s’ lesson: The Force is different with this one “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” is a very good “Star Wars” movie, if not a particularly inventive one. (Don’t worry. There are no plot spoilers here. If you’ve seen the trailer, you’re safe.) You’ve got lightsabers, you’ve got a bad guy with insanely high cheekbones (Peter Cushing as Grand Moff Tarkin in “Star Wars: A New Hope”; Domhnall Gleeson as General Hux here), you’ve got space battles so exhilarating that it’s only when you’re gasping for air that you realize you were holding your breath. You also, unfortunately, have one too many storylines — which means that one gets short shrift and is therefore rather uninteresting — and there’s often

a sense of “Oh, NOW what?” It’s as though, just when the characters check off the last thing on their to-do list and are ready to go home, something else arrives on their desks. As shown at the end of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) is back. Well, at least in the sense that he’s on his secluded island at the very edge of the galaxy. The mysterious Rey (Daisy Ridley) has traveled to said edge to drag Skywalker back to be part soldier, part mascot for the struggling Resistance, led by his sister, General Leia (Carrie Fisher … sniff). Things for the Resistance haven’t been looking good, as the menacing First Order has the whole “ruling the galaxy” thing pretty well in hand. Luke doesn’t want to go, so Rey decides to stick around

Oprah Winfrey to receive Cecil B. DeMille Award at Golden Globes

and pester him into giving her Jedi training. Eventually, he relents. So here come all the lessons about the Force. Except now they’re different lessons — and almost a different Force. Up until now, everyone has known that there is a dark side to the Force and a light side. Bad guys use one, good guys use another (bad = dark side, good = light side). Even though multiple Jedi throughout the films explain the Force simply as what binds everything together, the light/ dark dichotomy implies that the Force is a two-sided coin, with hope and goodness and love on one and murderous evil people who usually wear masks and/or are weird-looking in some way on the other. “The Last Jedi” is less interested in which side of the

‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ (PG-13, 151 min.) DIRECTOR: Rian Johnson STARS: Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, Oscar Isaac, Laura Dern, Carrie Fisher, Domhnall Gleeson IN A NUTSHELL: Under Luke Skywalker’s mentorship, central heroine Rey sets out to unlock the mysteries and secrets of The Force.

Force everyone ends up on, but in the space between light and dark. It’s more explicit now that that Force doesn’t actually have two sides; it doesn’t have a side at all. When at war, people kill people face to face in handto-hand combat; people kill people quasi-anonymously in zero-gravity dogfights; and people kill people by the score, by the thousands, probably by the tens of thousands. And those are just the things the good guys do in these movies. Blowing up the Death Star, a military installation, was much different than blowing up the mostly civilian Alderaan, but to all the parents who got space telegrams telling them their kid was dead, that probably didn’t matter much. It seems that previous understandings or explanations of the Force were, if not incorrect, then incomplete. “The Last Jedi” asks one very intriguing question about the Force (and, consequently, any system of morality): Is it really made up of light and dark, or is it all, in the end, just shades of gray? ‘The Other Side of Hope’ Unrated, 98 min.

Aki Kaurismaki’s “The Other Side of Hope,” about a Syrian refugee seeking asylum in Finland, depicts a man’s slow slog toward freedom. Featuring long stretches of silences and lingering takes of faces, this is not a film for the impatient. Though it’s refreshing to see a film about Western Europe’s refugee crisis that doesn’t rely on cliche, the fact remains: The mundane is mundane. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

‘Youth’ Unrated, 135 min.

The release of the 1970s-set Chinese melodrama “Youth,” about the troubles of a military arts troupe, was delayed after an unfavorable reaction by Chinese officials. With themes that mature from adolescent pettiness to adult regret, the film reveals that the young dancers and musicians who perform for soldiers are made of much frailer stuff. SONY PICTURES CLASSICS

The friendly bull ‘Ferdinand’ gets a wider pasture

‘Call Me by Your Name’ is a timeless, gracefully erotic cinematic treasure

FILM REVIEW The pleasures of art, music, food, natural beauty and sexual awakening are celebrated in “Call Me by Your Name,” an almost sinfully enjoyable film that observes and obeys the languid rhythms of a torrid Italian summer. Set in the early 1980s, Luca Guadagnino’s adaptation of Andre Aciman’s 2007 novel barely counts as a period piece. Still, the themes of longing, desire and self-definition are nothing if not timeless. Here, a young man’s coming-of-age is given such tactile, emotionally resonant immediacy that it would be recognizable in any country, of any era. The young man in question is Elio (Timothee Chalamet), the 17-year-old son of an archaeology professor (Michael Stuhlbarg) who has hired an American student named Oliver (Armie Hammer) to be his assistant for

the summer. Portrayed with a note-perfect combination of cocky self-assurance and wary naivete by Chalamet, Elio at first seems barely aware of Oliver’s presence, being far more interested in his on-and-off girlfriend, reading and music. For his part, Oliver embodies a purely American brand of unbridled appetite and unselfconscious confidence. Soon the household reaches its own pleasant rhythm, with the two young men — about seven years apart in age — gravitating toward one another as friends and, eventually, more. Before readers look up the Italian word for “problematic,” let it be noted that it is Elio, not Oliver, who is the pursuer in “Call Me by Your Name,” which was written for the screen by James Ivory. Balancing the objectification of its leading men with discretion and delicacy, this is a film that acknowledges the

‘Call Me by Your Name’ (R, 132 min.) DIRECTOR: Luca Guadagnino STARS: Armie Hammer, Timothee Chalamet, Michael Stuhlbarg IN A NUTSHELL: In northern Italy in 1983, 17-year-old Elio forms a romantic bond with Oliver, a grad student working with Elio’s father.

purity and sculptural beauty of youth, but never at the expense of a character who, on the cusp of manhood, possesses his own agency and desires, despite their sometimes shaky parameters. The plot of “Call Me by Your Name” isn’t particularly novel. Its contours are familiar to anyone who can remember their own sentimental education. What sets this movie apart are the flavors, feelings and fleeting glimpses of attraction that find as much erotic tension in

a volleyball game or alfresco lunch as in sparring over a Bach cantata. The villa where much of “Call Me by Your Name” transpires, with its lush fruit orchards and burnished, offhand refinement, feels less like a stage set than a summer home seen through a particularly revealing (but circumspect) keyhole. “Call Me by Your Name” finds the director marshaling those gifts in service to a spellbinding, ecstatically beautiful movie that gains even more heft and meaning in its final transcendent moments. What had been a twohander featuring sensitive, flawlessly judged performances by Chalamet and Hammer expands into something more. “Call Me by Your Name” may exemplify well-tempered cinema at its most balanced and attractive, but it’s far more than just a pretty face. Tiffany Haddish and John Cho take ‘The Oath’

“Girls Trip” breakout star Tiffany Haddish and “Star Trek’s” John Cho have joined the cast of “The Oath,” a new satirical thriller written, starring, and directed by Ike Barinholtz (“The Mindy Project”) and made by QC Entertainment, one of the producers of “Get Out.” The movie is “set in a politically divided America where citizens have to take an oath of loyalty,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. HBO renews “Curb Your Enthusiasm” for Season 10; production begins in the spring

FILM REVIEW Any picture book that a parent can read to kids in a few short minutes, no matter how lovely, requires fattening up to become a film. Sometimes Hollywood’s crassness kills the charm. Happily, that is not the case with “Ferdinand,” an animated film inspired by Munro Leaf’s 1936 children’s classic that brims with bumptious fun, droll characters and poignant emotions. The film honors Leaf’s gentle “The Story of Ferdinand,” about a Spanish bull (John Cena) who would rather smell the flowers than fight in the ring. As in the book, we first meet Ferdinand when he’s a wee calf on a farm. He runs away after his father fails to return from a bullfight, winding up at the home of a little girl named Nina (Lily Day). But after reacting wildly to a bee sting, townsfolk lasso him up and send Ferdinand back to the farm, where he recruits friends (including Kate McKinnon’s Lupe, a whacked-out “calming goat”) to help him escape. The movie widens Ferdinand’s world, allowing him to bring others along with him on his quest to be who he wants to be, and to let others do the same. That theme and the antibullfighting message, so subtle in the book, are made bolder in the film, but never preachy. An overlong chase sequence on the streets of Madrid in the third act feels like padding. Yet even then, the characters’ personalities enrich it. JANE HORWITZ (TWP)

SUMMARY: STOP. GOING BACK. TO THE DINOSAUR PLACE. This installment of the rebooted franchise has some of the characters from the 2015 movie going back to the dinosaur place to rescue them from a ready-to-blow volcano. You know what? SUMMARY: In a trailer that makes very little sense if you haven’t seen the other two “Maze Runner” movies, a guy named Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) has a bunch of friends who are all immune to a worldthreatening disease. Bad People are torturing his friends to try to find a cure. Thomas and Co. are against this, so everyone shoots guns a lot. K.P.K.

trending “The wise Robin Roberts took the words right out of my mouth: ‘Bye, Felicia.’ #Omarosa” @SETH_LEMON, tweeting after Robin Roberts threw some major shade at Omarosa Manigault after her interview with “Good Morning America” on Thursday about leaving (or being fired from) the Trump administration. After the interview, Roberts used a popular dismissive send-off, delivered with palpable distaste: “She says she has a story to tell and I’m sure she’ll be selling that story. Bye, Felicia.” Twitter went wild with reactions to the dig. Some, however, disapproved: “[That was] unprofessional, rude and highly offensive,” @sm00_smith tweeted.

“Dude, the Simpsons have predicted a crazy amount of things.” @THEJAKECOLLIER, responding to @darrenrovell, who was one of the first people on Twitter to point out that “The Simpsons” predicted Disney’s deal to buy assets of 21st Century Fox, which was announced Thursday. In an episode that aired Nov. 8, 1998, a 20th Century Fox sign is shown with these words underneath: “A Division of Walt Disney Co.”

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
