Coldilocks doesn’t understand why no one wants a piece of cake
The Statehouse in Rhode Island: Where Christmas trees go to die
The Philadelphia Zoo threw a birthday party last week for 37-year-old Coldilocks, the oldest polar bear in captivity in the United States. The zoo celebrated her birthday on a frigid day with a cake made of peanut butter, honey, raisins and fish. Zoo officials said the average life span for polar bears in captivity is 23 years. Coldilocks lived with her partner Klondike for more than three decades before Klondike died in 2015 at age 34. (AP)
Once again, the Christmas tree in the Statehouse in Providence, R.I., is a bit of a holiday downer. The donated tree, put up in November, is already dead, its needles falling off, its branches bare. The governor’s office said there are no plans to replace it. In 2005, the statehouse’s Christmas tree died when it was doused in fire retardant. And last year, the first tree selected was removed after staff decided it was too puny. (AP)

THE DISTRICT Sara Fuentes bent down to look at tracks in the snow, light imprints of tiny claws tracing a delicate path through the woods. “Mourning dove,” said Zach Slavin, who had been looking for birds with Fuentes and several other volunteers. The National Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count, now in its 118th year, began as a counterpoint to the holiday tradition of hunting parties competing to see who could kill the most. Now, it’s the longest-running wildlife census in the world, providing data that is used to better understand birds, changes in population and habitat, and the reasons for those shifts. In Washington, volunteers gathered by the footbridge to Theodore Roosevelt Island on Saturday morning just as the sun was rising, tinting the Potomac River pink and golden.

Birdwatchers took part in the National Audubon Society’s annual bird census on Saturday.
Long wakes of glinting ripples followed a flock of mallards through the water. “It’s like a veil lifted,” Fuentes said, as she, Slavin and Heidi Moyer stood with binoculars pointed up, seeing not a pattern of bare branches crisscrossing the blue sky but a world teeming with birds. “You can’t unsee them,” said
Slavin, a 30-year-old program manager in the Audubon Society’s citizen science department. “These absolutely beautiful gems — so delicate and fragile.” Roosevelt Island — named in honor of Theodore Roosevelt, a president who was a conservationist and a birder — is a place of unexpected contrasts: A great blue heron stood silhouetted against Georgetown’s waterfront across the river. Wood ducks paddled beneath a bridge thundering with unseen trucks overhead. It was quiet enough on the crest of the island to hear the tiny feet of a white-breasted nuthatch scratching the bark as it hopped down a tree — until an airplane roared overhead. Volunteers in their section of the D.C. count on Saturday saw nearly 3,000 birds of 60 different species, including red-tailed hawks, mergansers, grebes, cormorants, vultures, peregrine falcons, a surprising number of buffleheads, a goldeneye, a loon and an orange-crowned warbler. So, is Metro ‘Back2Good’?
GLEN ALLEN, VA.
Police: Woman mauled to death by her pit bulls Police said a Glen Allen woman was fatally mauled by her two pit bulls. The Richmond TimesDispatch reported that Bethany Lynn Stephens’ body was found by Goochland County deputies at 8:18 p.m. Thursday in a wooded area. Initial reports by the medical examiner’s office said the cause of death was “consistent with being mauled” by the dogs. They were being held at Goochland County Animal Control. Police said they were trying to have them euthanized. (AP)
TRANSPORTATION More than a year after Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld launched his service-focused “Back2Good” initiative, riders have found themselves living a dual reality: Statistics point to improving performance, with fewer breakdowns, delays and safety incidents, but the experience has been marred by service cuts, curtailed hours and higher fares — making people feel like they’re paying more for less. “Back2Good” was billed as a customer-oriented effort to win back trust, with a renewed focus on rail car maintenance and station improvements such as deep cleaning, better lighting and amenities such as free Wi-Fi. The goal was modest: “First, we will get back to good. And eventually, we will restore Metro to the world-class transit system it once was,” Wiedefeld wrote in a memo about the program. But riders say things are more complicated than the $400,000 marketing campaign could have communicated. For ex a mple, the new 7000-series trains are a welcome replacement for their clunky ancestors, riders say, but they cannot make up for the fact that Metro is running fewer trains. Amid budget cuts in June, Metro reduced rush-hour train frequencies on five of six lines and raised fares. Those changes were paired with an aggressive preventive maintenance push that cut operating hours significantly for nights and weekends. Interviews with more than 60 riders who use the system regularly revealed an array of reactions, from cautious optimism to dismay at the state of the system in Wiedefeld’s second year. While

Riders’ feelings mixed a year after the start of push for better service
The “Back2Good” initiative was billed as an effort to win back the trust of riders through better service and facilities.
Metro touts safety improvements and reliability gains made over the past 12 months, riders said that the system’s status remains fragile — that any unexpected problem could send their commute spiraling — and that no amount of free Wi-Fi, station painting or revamped lighting will make a difference. “There’s no reason why we should still have delays after we endured a year-long stretch of mess,” Red Line rider Damien Martinez, 29, of Northeast, said about Metro’s year-long SafeTrack maintenance program. Turning to a metaphor, Martinez said, “You can’t cover it up with paint; you still see cracks.” Katherine Kortum, chair of Metro’s Riders’ Advisory Council, which serves as a liaison to the Metro board, described a sense of “qualified hope” after Wiedefeld’s second year. “It feels like we’re on an uphill swing now, but it feels like it wouldn’t take much to get us going backward again,” she said. In the latest survey, 74 percent
Va. reveals funding plan Northern Virginians would pay higher taxes on real estate sales, hotel stays and wholesale gasoline to provide Metro with long-sought dedicated funding under a proposal to be announced today by Gov. Terry McAuliffe. The new tax revenue of $65 million a year would be in addition to $85 million Northern Virginia would earmark for Metro from transportation funds, according to the McAuliffe plan. The total — $150 million annually — would represent Virginia’s share of $500 million a year in additional, dedicated funds Metro says it needs. If approved by the General Assembly, the measure would be a breakthrough for Metro — the only large transit system in the U.S. that doesn’t obtain a significant amount of dedicated funding. (TWP)

those who weren’t satisfied: service reliability, including “consistency of trains arriving when expected and ride quality.” After dealing with sporadic disruptions for a year under SafeTrack, Janel Herbert of Sterling, Va., thought her commute from Wiehle-Reston East station to Judiciary Square station would be faster now. Instead, she said, her morning struggles only grew as Metro raised prices and increased headways. “The wait is longer. And the price went up,” Herbert said. “You pay more and it’s not as good.” In a week of disruptions, a Red Line rider from Germantown, Md., had an almost comical take on the state of affairs. Jon Rayer, 26, works as a software developer downtown and rides in from the Shady Grove station five days a week. Lately, he said, the eightminute headways have grown to 10 or 12 minutes. “Other than the delays,” he said, “everything seems to be fine.” FAIZ SIDDIQUI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

More people moving out of state than moving in More people are moving out of Virginia than are moving to the Old Dominion. The Daily Progress of Charlottesville reported that Virginia has seen higher numbers of people leaving the state than moving in since 2013, according to the University of Virginia’s Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service. The state’s population isn’t shrinking, thanks to births. But the trend of more people leaving than moving in is a reversal of demographic patterns dating back to the Great Depression, said research specialist Hamilton Lombard. (AP) BALTIMORE

local After tough campaign, governor-elect to focus on business and health VIRGINIA Virginia Gov.- elect Ralph Northam has the weight of a Democratic landslide to throw around in the State Capitol, but he’s holding back. He could pluck a few Republicans out of the General Assembly — where the GOP is holding onto a slim majority — and give them jobs in his Cabinet to tilt the balance of power toward Democrats.
He could try to ram through a broad expansion of Medicaid. But Northam says he is not looking to vanquish the other side. After an ugly gubernatorial campaign ended in a surprising Democratic surge that reverberated across the nation, voters don’t want showboating, he said. “Virginians deserve civility,” Northam said Friday in his first extended interview since he beat Republican Ed Gillespie by 9 points on Nov. 7. “They’re looking for a moral compass right now.” The Virginia results were w idely i nter preted as a

nation+world ‘AGGRESSIVE’
Calls intensify to expel war collaborator before he dies in NYC NEW YORK The last surviving Nazi collaborator ordered to leave American soil lives in a redbrick Queens rowhouse on a bustling stretch of 89th Street, just around the corner from a Chipotle with a distant view of Manhattan. It has been 14 years since a federal court in New York stripped Jakiw Palij of his U.S. citizenship for concealing his service as an armed guard in a brutal labor camp in eastern Poland, where 6,000 Jewish prisoners were later shot in pits on a single day in 1943. An immigration judge ordered Palij — who is from a Polish village in what is now Ukraine — deported to Germany, Poland, Ukraine or any other country that would take him. But the three countries have repeatedly declined to accept him, allowing 94-year-old Palij to spend his retirement in
comfortable Jackson Heights. Now, in a race against time, lawmakers and Jewish groups have been increasing pressure on the Trump administration to remove him. Legislators have written to the State and Justice departments, and protesters have regularly gathered outside Palij’s house with signs that read, “His hands are drenched in blood.” Two members of Congress are pushing for a hearing. Since 2005, eight Nazi collaborators under deportation orders have died on U.S. soil after being rejected by their native countries and Germany. A ninth died a few months after the U.S. government launched a deportation case. Palij is the last remaining war collaborator ordered out of the United States. The demands to remove Palij have generated a swift response from federal officials. In an October letter to Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., the State Department said that it had reached out again to the governments of Germany, Poland and Ukraine

and was turned down. In 2003, Palij told The New York Times that he was forced into service and did not take part in any killings during the war. Prosecutors who worked at the Office of Special Investigations, a former unit in the Justice Department, said that Germany bears responsibility because the Nazis were serving in the name of the German government. A German government official said in an email last week that Germany cannot accept Palij as he is not a German national. Long Island Rabbi Zev Friedman, who lost more than 200 family members in Poland during World War II, said it is long past time to bring Palij to justice. “Victims of the Holocaust, the people living in Queens, families of veterans ... it is really painful and sad that . . . someone who stands in direct opposition to every value we have here in America ... can live here for so many years, hiding in plain sight.” DEBBIE CENZIPER AND SCOTT NOVER

Sea lion, seal attacks force cove’s closure For San Francisco tourists, Aquatic Park Cove is one of the city’s most iconic areas, a popular spot to watch enormous sea lions and harbor seals frolicking in the water. For locals, the cove is known as one of the best places for an openwater swim. But last week, the cove’s most prominent features clashed in a harrowing manner, when “aggressive” seals and sea lions attacked three swimmers in the span of about five days, officials said. One swimmer didn’t require medical attention, but the other two were taken to the hospital. The incidents prompted the National Park Service to temporarily ban swimming there over the weekend. (TWP)

Transition emails obtained illegally? Trump lawyer charges Mueller improperly acquired documents POLITICS A lawyer representing President Trump’s transition team claimed Saturday that special counsel Robert Mueller III improperly obtained a trove of transition emails as part of the inquiry into Russian influence in the 2016 election and other matters. The batch of emails totaling thousands of pages of communications was provided to Mueller by the federal General Services Administration, a lawyer representing the organization known as Trump for America said in a letter delivered to investigators. Peter Carr, a spokesman for Mueller’s, team rejected the allegations of impropriety. “When we have obtained emails in the course of our ongoing criminal investigation, we have secured either the account owner’s consent or appropriate criminal process,” Carr said. The letter from lawyer Kory Langhofer is the latest in a series of legal and public relations moves by Trump allies to attempt to undermine Mueller’s probe. Mueller’s investigation is looking at whether any crimes were committed as part of what U.S. intelligence agencies say was

systematic Russian meddling in the election Trump won. The letter from Langhofer alleged that career employees of the GSA improperly provided communications to investigators working for Mueller “without notifying TFA or taking customary precautions to protect TFA’s rights and privileges,” suggesting they may have had political motives. Transition documents are private property, not government records, the letter contends. But legal experts dispute those claims. A “.gov” email is exempt from privacy, former federal prosecutor Randall Eliason said, adding that obtaining transition emails is standard procedure. ‘youthquake’
The definition: A significant cultural, political or social change arising from the actions or influence of young people. The backstory: The Oxford Dictionaries’ word of 2017 was met with a wave of skepticism on social media, with some saying they have never heard it used. The word also is not new; it was coined in 1965 by Vogue editor Diana Vreeland and was the title of a 1985 album from British pop group Dead or Alive. (TWP)
White House to HHS: Halt use of these words WASHINGTON The Trump administration has informed multiple divisions in the Department of Health and Human Services that they should avoid using certain words or phrases in documents being drafted for next year’s budget. Officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which is part of HHS, were given a list of seven prohibited words or phrases during a meeting Thursday with senior CDC officials who oversee the budget. The words to avoid: “vulnerable,” “entitlement,” “diversity,” “transgender,” “fetus,” “evidence-based” and “science-based.” No explanations were given for the language changes. A second HHS agency received similar guidance to avoid using “entitlement,” “diversity” and “vulnerable,” according to an official who took part in a recent briefing. Participants at that agency were also told to use “Obamacare” instead of ACA, or the Affordable Care Act. At the State Department, meanwhile, certain documents now refer to sex education as “sexual risk avoidance.” The colleague who provided the briefing at the second HHS agency relied on a document from the Office of Management and Budget detailing guidance for the fiscal 2019 budget, according to an official who was among those briefed. GOP makes its tax pitch POLITICS Republicans, confident they’ve found the votes to pass a massive tax overhaul, entered the next phase of their effort Sunday, attempting to sell the plan to a public that polling suggests is deeply skeptical. GOP leaders argued that the tax bill — the final version of which was unveiled Friday — is aimed primarily at helping the middle class, brushing aside nonpartisan analyses that show the bulk of the legislation’s benefits would go to the wealthy and to corporations. “This is a very large tax cut for working families,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told CNN. He said some upperincome families, particularly in blue states, would actually see their taxes go up because of the reduction of the state and local tax deductions under the plan. The sales pitch is trying to turn public opinion in favor of a $1.46 trillion Republican bill that centers on a massive tax rate decrease for corporations and a dramatic reduction in the estate tax, which is paid only by a fraction of the wealthiest American families. Most Americans would see their overall tax burden reduced under the bill during its first few years, but the plan’s long-term implications for the middle class are more complicated, depending both on an individual family’s circumstances and decisions that won’t be made for years. The size of individuals’ tax cuts will vary widely, due in large part to changes that the measure would make to the tax code’s complicated system of tax deductions. The bill would

double the “standard” deduction used by many middle-class taxpayers while also eliminating or reducing some other deductions frequently used by those who itemize their returns. The plan schedules many of these individual-side tax cuts to expire in eight years, though Republicans say they expect a future Congress to extend these cuts before they sunset and that, as such, they should be considered permanent. The bill would also raise revenue by eliminating the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate, which the Congressional Budget Office estimates will lead to 13 million fewer Americans having health insurance a decade from now. Americans have been skeptical of the promises the GOP is making about the bill. Polling has consistently found approval ratings for the bill at below 35 percent, and a CBS poll from
Highlights of the tax bill A tax cut for most, but especially the wealthy: The bill would reduce the top tax rate from 39.6 percent to 37 percent and lower rates in other tax brackets. These changes expire at the end of 2025. A giant tax cut for corporations: The corporate tax rate would drop to 21 percent from 35 percent in the most significant part of the bill. This change does not expire. Key deductions remain: The bill would preserve the deduction for mortgage interest up to $750,000 and the state and local tax deduction up to $10,000. The end of a health care rule: The bill would end the ACA provision that everyone must have insurance or pay a penalty, a change that could lead an estimated 13 million to drop coverage. Deficit hit: The Joint Committee on Taxation estimated the Senate version, similar to the final plan, would cost $1 trillion over a decade. (TWP)

last week found that 76 percent of Americans believe its biggest benefits will go to the largest corporations. Congressional Republicans have started their uphill climb to persuade Americans otherwise, touting the broad benefits they expect as a result of the large corporate rate tax cut and dismissing claims that the bill will balloon the deficit. “This will benefit hard-working American families, people in the lower income tax brackets, and everybody in every tax bracket will see a tax cut,” Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, told ABC News. Confronted by a report from the International Business Times that some GOP lawmakers inserted last-minute changes that would personally enrich them, Cornyn said: “Our Democratic colleagues simply refused to participate in the process — we probably could have made it better if they had.” But not everyone is convinced, including members of their own party. “Do I think they could have done better for the middle class? I do,” Gov. John Kasich, R-Ohio, said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” While the tax debate has consumed Congress, there has been scant progress toward a spending deal. Current federal spending authority is set to expire Friday, and a partial government shutdown will ensue if Congress does not act to extend it. House Republican leaders filed a spending bill last week that would temporarily extend funding for most government agencies at current levels until Jan. 19, while providing longer-term military funding at higher levels — $650 billion through Sept. 30. But that bill is considered dead on arrival in the Senate, where Democrats can block it because of the chamber’s 60-vote filibuster threshold.
RUSSIA Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday phoned President Trump to thank him for a tip from the CIA that thwarted a terrorist attack being planned in St. Petersburg. The unusual call — countries share intelligence all the time, but leaders rarely publicly thank one another for it — was confirmed by White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders. Putin told Trump that the information provided by the CIA allowed Russian law enforcement to track down and detain suspects who were planning to bomb the centrally located Kazan Cathedral and other crowded parts of Russia’s second-largest city. “Based on the information the United States provided, Russian authorities were able to capture the terrorists just prior to an attack that could have killed large numbers of people,” the White House said. “Both leaders agreed that this serves as an example of the positive things that can occur when our countries work together.” It was the two presidents’ second conversation since Thursday, when they spoke after Putin’s annual four-hour televised news conference, during which the Russian leader mentioned the booming U.S. stock market as an example of Trump’s successes. The White House said Trump thanked Putin for remarks he made “acknowledging America’s strong economic performance.”

nation+world Low-profile operation began in 2007 to study unexplained sightings NATIONAL SECURITY Just before leaving his Defense Department job two months ago, intelligence officer Luis Elizondo quietly arranged to secure the release of three of the most unusual videos in the Pentagon’s secret vaults: raw footage from encounters between fighter jets and “anomalous aerial vehicles” — military jargon for UFOs. The videos, all taken from cockpit cameras, show pilots struggling to lock their radars on oval-shaped vessels that, on screen, look vaguely like giant flying Tic Tacs. The strange
aircraft — no claims are made about their possible origins or makeup — appear to hover briefly before sprinting away at speeds that elicit gasps and shouts from the pilots. Elizondo, in an internal Pentagon memo requesting that the videos be cleared for public viewing, argued that the images could help educate pilots and improve aviation safety. But in interviews, he said his ultimate intention was to shed light on a program Elizondo himself ran for seven years: a low-key Defense Department operation to collect and analyze reported sightings of unidentified flying objects. Current and former Pentagon officials confirm that the Pentagon program began in 2007 and was formed for the purpose of collecting and analyzing “anomalous aerospace threats” ranging from advanced aircraft fielded by traditional U.S. adversaries to commercial drones to possible alien encounters. The program is a rare instance of current government investigations into UFOs, a phenomenon that was the subject of multiple official inquiries in the 1950s and 1960s. JOBY WARRICK

Suicide bombers attack church, killing 9 people Two suicide bombers struck a church in Pakistan on Sunday, killing nine people and wounding more than 50 others, authorities said, in the first attack on a church claimed by the country’s Islamic State group affiliate. The other made it inside. A search was underway for two accomplices. (AP)

VATICAN CITY | Pope Francis blows out his birthday candle on an extra-long pizza at the Vatican. Francis, who turned 81 on Sunday, told the invited children, who use a Vatican health service, to “eat all 4 meters” (13 feet) of the pizza, saying it will make them grow. Later, thousands of children in St. Peter’s Square shouted birthday wishes to the pope. He replied from his window overlooking the square: “Thanks a lot, thanks a lot.”

Redskins squeak by 20

WITH LITTLE TO PLAY FOR BUT PRIDE, the Redskins scraped together just enough Sunday to squeak
past an opponent whose offensive arsenal consisted of the right foot of its field goal kicker. But a 20-15 win at FedEx Field was welcome after back-to-back losses, and Washington (6-8) has a
chance of finishing 8-8. Even in victory, the Redskins struggled against a team that got its only points Sunday from kicker Phil Dawson. He hit from 40, 35, 19, 34 and 32 yards amid game-long foibles of quarterback Blaine Gabbert, who went 16-of-41 for 189 yards and an interception. Kirk Cousins fared better, going 18-of-26 for 196 yards with two touchdowns. LIZ CLARKE (THE WASHINGTON POST)
WORST SCARES: The Cardinals had several close calls on their last drive, including a pass that squirted out of tight end Troy Niklas’ grasp near the goal line. Kendall Fuller, who committed pass interference earlier in the drive, broke up another throw intended for Fitzgerald. BEST SACK: With Arizona trailing 20-15 and three minutes left, the Cardinals faced third-and-5 from the Washington 35-yard line. As the

BEST HIT: Redskins safety D.J. Swearinger denied his former team a comeback win by breaking up a fourth-down pass intended for Larry Fitzgerald deep in Washington territory in the final seconds. BEST IMPACT: Preston Smith started the season fast with 4.5 sacks, but he suffered a forgetful stretch with only half a sack in the eight games since. On Sunday, he bursted back on the scene with a fumble recovery that turned into a Redskins touchdown, his second career interception, a sack and four QB hits. BEST POINTS PER PLAY: The Redskins ran seven plays, gained 24 yards of offense and had the ball for 2:41 in the first quarter, but still led the Cardinals, who ran 21 plays in the first 15 minutes, 7-3. Washington ran 15 plays and had the ball for just 6:34 in the first half, the lowest time of possession by a team in a half this year. SCOTT ALLEN (TWP)

THE TAKEAWAY
NFL’s woes on display at FedEx Life in 2017 for the Redskins — and for an NFL ravaged by injuries — was on gruesome display Sunday at FedEx Field. Washington got six of its paltry 20 points from Kapri Bibbs, above, who was signed off the practice squad this week because four Redskins running backs are on injured reserve. Washington entered Sunday with the worst scoring defense in the NFL (26.5 points per game) but held the Cardinals to 15, largely because injuries had deposed Arizona’s top two quarterbacks, Carson Palmer and Drew Stanton, and a pair of star running backs in David Johnson and Adrian Peterson. The Redskins still needed a last-minute stand aided by a dropped pass from tight end Troy Niklas to escape with an ugly win that will do little to quiet dissatisfaction in D.C. GABE HIATT (EXPRESS)

SI: Panthers owner harassed workers
Strasburg says he might skip future All-Star games
Report: Bengals’ Lewis to resign at end of season
The Nationals’ Stephen Strasburg said he’ll consider skipping future All-Star games, including the 2018 edition at Nationals Park, because he thinks the change in routine for that event contributed to an injury last season. He said Sunday at the team’s winter fan festival that going to the All-Star Game in Miami this year “pushed me back a bit” and “started making my arm hurt.” He left his second start after the All-Star break after two innings and went on the disabled list with a nerve impingement in his right elbow. He finished the year 15-4 with a 2.52 ERA and was third in NL Cy Young voting. (AP)
After 15 years of frequent regularseason success and postseason disappointment, Bengals coach Marvin Lewis reportedly will step down when this season ends. He is 0-7 in the playoffs with Cincinnati. Lewis, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported, will “pursue opportunities elsewhere” that could include coaching or working in another team’s front office. NFL Network reported that the decision is mutual and that Lewis could move to the Bengals’ front office. He denied the reports Sunday before the Bengals fell to 5-9 with a 34-7 loss at Minnesota.
Sports Illustrated reported Sunday that at least four former team employees received monetary settlements due to inappropriate comments and conduct by Panthers owner Jerry Richardson. KEVIN C. COX (GETTY IMAGES)
Unnamed sources told SI that Richardson made sexually suggestive comments to women and directed a racial slur at an AfricanAmerican scout. The report states that the settlements came with non-disclosure requirements. Richardson, 81, reportedly brushed employees’ breasts while fastening their seatbelts in a car and asked one worker for a foot massage. Before the SI report was published Sunday, the NFL said it was taking over an investigation into Richardson that the team announced Friday. (AP)

This year, the channel’s merry, soothing schmaltz feels more essential than ever TELEVISION Consider the Hallmark Channel in December. No, but really. “I cannot stop watching the Hallmark Channel,” says Mac Cohn, proprietor of a sports website in Ohio. “Usually to unwind I would watch football, but even watching football has become a political thing. The Hallmark Channel has none of that.” Hallmark is now deep into its biggest annual event: “Countdown to Christmas,” a series of several dozen fresh-from-theoven, seasonal made-for-TV movies. And it is an event. Though it’s easy to mock the Hallmark Channel, there is something specific about this December: It’s crap. The news stinks, current events stink — turning on the TV, in general, stinks. Viewers like a good dose of Hallmark. “The Christmas Train” — with a plot that is vaguely “Murder on the Orient Express,” if one replaces “murder” with “festive spirit” — reached 4.9 million viewers when it aired the
Saturday after Thanksgiving, the most-watched cable program in the country that day. Meanwhile, the actual “Murder on the Orient Express” recently made $10.7 million on its opening day in theaters. Divide that by roughly $10 a movie ticket, and that means there were five times as many people watching Kimberly Williams-Paisley and Dermot Mulroney on Hallmark as there were multiplex-goers watching Johnny Depp and Dame Judi Dench. “About 10 years ago, we were making Christmas movies, but we weren’t doing it as part of an overall event,” says Michelle Vicary, Hallmark’s executive vice president of programming. “But what the ratings told us, and what our audience told us, is that they wanted more.” Now Hallmark — and its sister channel, Hallmark Movies and Mysteries — has released 33 movies in 2017 alone, Vicary says. The films are always Christmas-focused but tend to celebrate

the season rather than Jesus Christ. They are often about a high-powered career woman who needs an invitation to slow down. She is played by someone from that show you used to watch circa 1992-1998. She will meet a moderately attractive man who looks like an Old Spice commercial. The plot might be reminiscent of a specific big-budget feature film, except smaller-budget, and with Christmas. Hallmark movies can blend together so seamlessly that a few hours after turning off the TV,
you might have no idea what you just watched. Escapist television is a well-known commodity, but by God do we need it this year. “You just get tired of the bad news, you know?” says Candace Cameron Bure — the long-ago “Full House” child actor, the current “Fuller House” lead and the star of a total of seven Hallmark Christmas movies. “You just want something that feels genuine, and heartwarming, and loving,” she adds. Oh, we know. MONIC A HESSE

BOX OFFICE HAUL
The box office take of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” in its first weekend, landing the second-best opening ever and slotting in behind only its predecessor, “The Force Awakens.” The massive debut not only puts “The Last Jedi” in the record books; it single-handedly brightens what has been a disappointing year for Hollywood: The weekend was far and away the highestgrossing of the year. “The Last Jedi” stampeded over family film “Ferdinand,” which debuted in second place with $13.3 million. Move over, Magi: TV offers viewers three December gifts December is not just the month of TV reruns. Three new series are launching and there’s something for everyone — nicely weird, disturbingly naughty and hyperbolically holy. “Jean-Claude Van Johnson” (streaming on Amazon) is a fake and often hilarious documentary series about Belgianborn action star Jean-Claude Van Damme (playing himself), who reminds us he “used to be super famous” but now at
57 is too decrepit to perform amazing splits to dodge a bad guy’s weapon. Van Damme showers in coconut water and hops on a Segway to fetch the morning paper (which he picks up with a grabber stick) before breakfasting on Pop-Tarts — while the soundtrack plays a melancholic rendition of “Ne Me Quitte Pas.” Only he can’t quite quit it — the storyline is that he’s going back into action. “Happy!” (10 p.m. Wednesdays on Syfy) kicks off with a man who blows off his head, then hits the dance floor to a

disco version of “Jingle Bells,” spouting blood. Turns out it’s just a dream. And the show itself, based on a graphic novel, is darkly hallucinatory. Ex-cop Nick Sax is a heart attackprone, alcoholic hit man who’s just learned a password the mob would love to know — and who is stunned when a winged, buck-toothed blue unicorn flies into his life to offer advice. The equine is animated; the other characters are portrayed by humans, with Christopher
Meloni as world-weary Sax. Comic Patton Oswalt gleefully voices Happy the horse, squealing lines like, “You’re in deep bandini, Nick — that means a bad word!”

“Knightfall”
“Knightfall” (10 p.m. Wednesdays on History) is about the Knights Templar, the warrior monks who protected the Holy Grail in the Middle Ages. But in a battle between the Knights and Muslim powers, the grail ends up sinking
into the Mediterranean. The series spent millions and it shows in epic fight scenes, with breathtaking shots of flying firebombs, marauding humans and galloping horses. Unfortunately, the dialogue is epically cliched. “Surrender, die, those are your choices,” a Middle Eastern emissary tells the Knights. Of course they opt for the latter. @PETE_WELLS, using the lyrics of Justin Bieber’s song “Sorry” to parody celebrity chef Mario Batali’s apology for sexual misconduct, which actually included a link to a recipe for “fan favorite” holiday cinnamon rolls. “You know Mario Batali is very serious about changing his behavior because he included a recipe for pizza dough cinnamon rolls,” @s---foodblogger tweeted.
“Picture this: It’s 2006 ... Chris Daughtry didn’t win ‘American Idol.’ You’re so sad that you play ‘Bad Day’ by Daniel Powter on your iPod nano, then you remember your mom just bought you a new Webkinz.” @JAKEMLIST, joining in the random

Taraji to speak in smiley emoji from now on
Lady found a shiny thing in her cereal box Richard Gere and his girlfriend, activist and businesswoman Alejandra Silva, sparked engagement rumors when Silva was photographed wearing a diamond ring on her left hand while at an event with the actor last week. Gere’s representative told Page Six that he wasn’t aware of any engagement. Gere and Silva have not commented. The two have been dating since 2015.
Taraji P. Henson confirmed a longtime rumor that she has been dating former NFL player Kelvin Hayden. “I’m happy in my personal life. Finally it has happened to me!” the actress said last week on Essence magazine’s podcast “Yes, Girl!” “I’m not the type to blast my personal business, but I think that it’s important for people to know that I’m happy. I’m very, very happy. I just am. We’ve been together for two years. And no one would really know that because I don’t blast my info like that, but I’m very happy.” Reports of Henson and Hayden’s relationship first surfaced in December 2015. (EXPRESS)
Candice Swanepoel shared Friday on Instagram that she’s pregnant with her second child. The supermodel posted a photo of herself cradling her baby bump with the caption: “Christmas came early #2.” She and fiance Hermann Nicoli welcomed a son, Anaca, in 2016. This baby news comes just weeks after Swanepoel walked in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in November. (EXPRESS)
“Saturday Night Live’s” Pete Davidson shared an Instagram on Friday of a new tattoo of Hillary Clinton. “Wanted to get @hillaryclinton a Christmas gift so I got a tattoo of my hero,” he wrote. “Thanks for being such a badass and one of the strongest people in the universe.” Clinton then commented on the post: “This makes it significantly less awkward that I’ve had a Pete Davidson tattoo for years. But seriously, I’m honored.” (EXPRESS)

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will marry in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle on May 19 — the same day as one of the biggest English sports events of the year, the FA Cup final. The timing could be an issue for Prince William, who is expected to be Harry’s best man. William is the president of the Football Association, and presented a trophy at this year’s match. (AP)
