A ghoulish holiday tradition in Sycamore Township, Ohio, will end when this year’s “zombie Nativity” scene is taken down after Christmas. When Jasen Dixen created the display — which features a zombie Mary and zombie baby Jesus — in 2013, it was met with both scorn and celebration. Dixen was going to drop it this year but acceded to hundreds of email requests to reprise it. “It’s almost like a cult following,” he said. (AP)

The woman who created the mess agreed to pay only after WHAM-TV publicized the incident, the station reported this weekend. (EXPRESS)

ARLINGTON After Larry Johnson said goodbye to his children, gently handing his 6-month-old baby to a woman waiting on the other side of a doorway, he walked to a side of the room and sat down. Other incarcerated parents were saying goodbye to their kids, too, and someone asked the 23-year-old father if he was OK. Before he had a chance to respond, his 7-year-old son, La’mari, and 3-year-old daughter, Tatum, came running back into the room, calling, “Daddy!” and throwing their arms around him. His children didn’t want to leave. For the past two hours, the kids had climbed on Johnson’s lap, played board games and opened presents in a room of about 10 incarcerated parents and their children for a holiday party earlier this month at the Arlington County Detention Facility. Johnson had not seen his children since his sentencing on

April 21 for drug charges. “It was wonderful,” he said of the visit. The Arlington jail has held these special events for at least 10 years to allow children a contact visit with their parents. The rest of the year, a glass barrier separates inmates and visitors. The party was the first time Johnson had held his infant son. About 8 percent of children nationwide have lived with a parent or guardian who was incarcerated, compared with 8.5 percent in Virginia, according to the 2016 National Survey of Children’s Health data. The parents at the event

Tuesday completed a parenting program, consistently obey the rules in the facility and comply with their treatment plans to be eligible for the rare contact visit with their children. Red and green ornaments and snowflakes hung from the ceiling, families sat at tables with red plastic tablecloths, and there were donated gifts under a paper Christmas tree decoration on a wall. “You can see how much it means to them,” said Maj. Jimmie Barrett, director of corrections for the county sheriff’s office, as he watched Johnson play with his children. La’mari touched his own hair and then his father’s, realized it felt the same, and smiled. “Daddy, I got a Barbie!” Tatum yelled. Therapist Camille Watkin said the contact visit with children motivates incarcerated parents to focus on their goals. “You look at their faces, wanting to hold on, but understanding they have to let go of their children,” Watkin said. “This takes strength to do this, for your children to see you in this situation.”

Former officer guilty of trying to help ISIS VIRGINIA The first police officer charged in the United States with attempting to support the Islamic State group was convicted Monday. The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Nicholas Young was found guilty by a federal jury of attempting to provide material support to the militant organization. Prosecutors said Young bought gift cards he thought would be used by the Islamic State. But the person he gave the cards to was working for the FBI. Now Young faces up to 60 years in prison at his sentencing Feb. 23. Young, 38, was a police officer for Metro when he was arrested last year after being targeted in a sting operation. “Nicholas Young swore an oath to protect and defend, and instead violated the public’s trust by attempting to support ISIS,” said Dana J. Boente, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Virginia man convicted of providing support to terrorist organization

Nicholas Young, 38, of Alexandria is the first police officer ever to face terrorism charges.

The trial revealed Young had been under federal surveillance since 2010. Young argued he was entrapped. The trial featured testimony from two undercover informants who met with Young dozens of times over the years. They used pseudonyms and testified from behind a large screen. One, who testified as “Khalil Sullivan,” said Young came under

surveillance because of his associations with other FBI targets, including Zachary Chesser, who was convicted of trying to travel to Somalia to join the militant group al-Shabab, and of threatening the creators of the “South Park” cartoon series for episodes Chesser thought insulted Islam. The second informant, who went by “Mo,” was the primary figure in the sting operation. Mo portrayed himself as a recent convert to Islam who traveled overseas to join the Islamic State. As part of the sting, Mo and an FBI agent went to Turkey in 2014 to make the story authentic. An FBI agent testified he was concerned Young could use his connections as a police officer to find out whether Mo had really taken an international flight. P rosecutors highlighted Young’s fascination with Nazis, a fact prosecutors said meshed with his radical Islamic views because of a shared anti-Semitism. Defense lawyers tried before the trial to ban such evidence, fearing it was overly prejudicial. (AP)

McAuliffe calls for expansion of Medicaid Outgoing Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe has presented a budget to state lawmakers that would expand Medicaid, pad the state’s rainy day fund and give state workers a 2 percent raise. McAuliffe unveiled the two-year spending proposal Monday. Citing uncertainty at the federal level, McAuliffe said the state should put “every available dime” into its rainy day fund. The plan assumes $421.7 million in savings from Medicaid expansion, which Republicans in Congress have opposed. (AP)

Charlottesville’s police chief, who oversaw the department’s widely criticized response to a Thomas violent white nationalist rally this summer, abruptly retired Monday, the city said. The city did not give a reason for Chief Al Thomas’ departure. Earlier this month, a former federal prosecutor released a report that was sharply critical of Thomas’ “slow-footed response.” The report also said Thomas deleted relevant text messages and made officers fearful of retaliation for speaking with investigators. Delegate cries foul over profanity law In Va., cursing in public is a misdemeanor that can bring a $250 fine VIRGINIA Dang it! Shoot! Jeepers creepers! Virginia law demands that residents keep it clean, even in moments crying out for the foulest four-letter words. It’s illegal in this state to curse in public. “Profane swearing” is a Class 4 misdemeanor punishable by a $250 fine, right up there with public intoxication. It’s a law that predates the Civil War. Yet modern-day potty mouths still get charged under it — in small numbers, but in ways that can raise troubling questions about law enforcement. But a state lawmaker from a county that sounds a lot like a curse word is trying hard to get rid of the law. Del. Michael J. Webert, RFauquier, is a cattle farmer who knows that stuff happens. And that when it does, only a few choice words will do. “When you’re working [with] cows and a 1,400-pound animal doesn’t do what you want it to, or steps on your feet, every once in a while something colorful comes out of your mouth,” said Webert, 38. A conservative on most issues, Webert says his goal is to protect free speech and shrink a

bloated state code by removing a law deemed unconstitutional decades ago under Virginia Court of Appeals and U.S. Supreme Court rulings. “When I cursed, my mother told me not to and handed me a bar of soap,” he said. “You shouldn’t get hit with a Class 4 misdemeanor.” It is not clear how many people get charged under Virginia’s law each year. Statewide figures are hard to come by since the statute covers swearing and public intoxication, and a breakdown for swearing alone was not immediately available. The numbers appear to be small based on arrests in Arlington County, which has a local ordinance modeled on the state law. I n a c ou nt y of 2 3 0 , 0 0 0 residents, police charged a mere three people with cursing over the past two years. LAURA VOZZELLA (THE WASHINGTON POST)

She said she slammed into the seat area in front of her. DUPONT, WASH. An Amtrak train making the first-ever run along a faster new route hurtled off an overpass south of Seattle at an estimated 80 mph Monday and spilled some of its cars onto the highway below, killing at least three people, authorities said. A U.S. official briefed on the investigation said earlier that at least six people were killed. It wasn’t immediately clear how to reconcile the numbers. Seventy-seven passengers and seven crew members were aboard when the train derailed, pulling 13 cars off the tracks. At least 50 people were hospitalized, more than a dozen with critical or serious injuries, authorities said. An official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said preliminary signs indicate that Train 501 may have struck something before going off the track about 40 miles south of Seattle. The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office said several vehicles on Interstate 5 were struck by falling train cars and multiple motorists were injured. No fatalities of motorists were reported. In a radio transmission immediately after the accident, the conductor can be heard saying the train was coming around a corner and was crossing a bridge that passed over Interstate 5 when it derailed. Dispatch audio also indicated that the engineer

sent about three hours after the accident, saying the wreck shows “more than ever why our soon to be submitted infrastructure plan must be approved quickly.” The train was making the inaugural run on the new route as part of a $180.7 million project designed to speed up service by removing passenger trains from a crowded route along Puget Sound. A team from the National Transportation Safety Board was on its way to investigate. The train was going 81.1 mph moments before the derailment, according to transitdocs .com, a website that maps Amtrak train locations and speeds. The maximum speed along the stretch of track is 79 mph, according information online from the Washington State Department of Transportation. RACHEL LA CORTE AND GILLIAN FLACCUS (AP)

Belgium ends its telegram service

Belgium is shutting down its 171-year-old telegram service Dec. 29, the BBC reports. The continued use of the 19th-century technology is anachronistic — the U.K., which invented the telegram, abandoned it in 1982, and the U.S. shut down its system in 2006. The BBC reports that only about 10 businesses and a few individuals in Belgium still use the service. A telegram costs about $28 for 20 words, plus $1 for delivery in the capital, Brussels. PUERTO RICO The governor of Puerto Rico ordered all government agencies to reopen their books and initiate a recount and review of certified deaths that have occurred since Hurricane Maria, after weeks of reporting by various news outlets pointed to a possible severe undercount of storm fatalities. The territorial government has attributed 64 official deaths to the storm and its aftermath, but The New York Times and the Center for Investigative Reporting in Puerto Rico have said data show that the number of deaths in the weeks after the storm far exceeded those of the same time period in previous years. The independent analyses put the count at likely more than 1,000. Gov. Ricardo Rossello told The Washington Post last week that there was “no intent to hide the number of deaths” relative to the storm and that “accountability broke down” in the wake of Maria. It’s been nearly three months since Maria, and a bit less than half of the island has little or unreliable access to electricity, making life extremely difficult for the sick and elderly who depend on life-saving medical equipment, medicine and treatment to stay alive. The government will now re-examine medical records, interview family members and call doctors for more information to determine whether deaths identified as “natural” need to be reclassified. Ramaphosa wins election to lead nation’s ruling party

Uber driver reportedly arrested in Briton’s death

Crews trying to corral Southern California’s enormous wildfire hoped to take advantage of two days of helpful weather conditions before potentially dangerous gusts return midweek, officials said Monday. The blaze that began two weeks ago still threatens communities northwest of Los Angeles, where thousands remain under evacuation orders. Cooler temperatures, slightly higher humidity and light winds were expected Monday and today. (AP)

Cyril Ramaphosa, elected leader Monday of South Africa’s ruling African National Congress in a tight race, now faces the daunting task of uniting a divided party. Ramaphosa, the country’s current deputy president, beat former African Union commission chairwoman Nkosazana DlaminiZuma. As the head of the ANC, Ramaphosa, 65, will be the party’s candidate for president in 2019, an election he is widely expected to win. (AP)

Lebanese authorities on Monday arrested an Uber driver suspected of killing a British woman who worked for the U.K. Embassy in Beirut, local media reported. The woman’s body was found early Saturday beside a road east of the city with a rope around her neck. Police would not comment on reports of an arrest. The woman, identified by British media as Rebecca Dykes, was last seen Friday night at a bar in Beirut’s Gemayzeh district, where she got an Uber. (AP)

Amb. Haley vetoes vote on Jerusalem U.N. Security Council wanted U.S. to rescind its decision on capital UNITED NATIONS The United States on Monday vetoed a resolution supported by the 14 other U.N. Security Council members — including U.S. allies Britain, France and Japan — that would have required President Trump to rescind his declaration of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, a vote that showed the depth of opposition to the U.S. move. The Palestinians immediately announced that they will seek a resolution with similar demands in the 193-member General Assembly, where there are no vetoes. But unlike the Security Council, the assembly’s resolutions are not legally binding. U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley said the veto, the Trump administration’s first, was done “in defense of American sovereignty and in defense of America’s role in the Middle East peace process.” The resolution, called for by Egypt, would have demanded that all countries comply with resolutions on Jerusalem, including requirements that the city’s final status be decided in negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. It would also have affirmed that “any decisions and actions which purport to have

He said Haley “lit a candle of truth” on Hanukkah and dispelled “lies.” Trump on Dec. 6 declared that the U.S. recognizes the divided holy city as Israel’s capital and will move its embassy there. Amid uproar over the decision, the White House announced Monday that Vice President Pence is delaying a trip to the Middle East. He was set to leave today. His office said the trip was being delayed so he can stay in Washington until votes on the tax cut bill are done. (AP/THE WASHINGTON POST)

mission statement that guides policymaking, prioritizes the economic implications of global engagement. For example, the document says that under Trump, national security decision-making will take greater account of economic factors and homeland security, administration officials said. Three described the document to reporters Sunday on the condition of anonymity ahead of its release. “This strategy advances what I would call a principled realism,” one official said, adding that the global balance of power has shifted in ways that have been unfavorable to U.S. interests. “This new strategy presents a plan of how America can regain momentum to reverse many of these trends.” Both China and Russia have sought to “change the status quo” in ways that the U.S. opposes and that could challenge U.S. interests, another official said. She cited Chinese military expansion and island-building in the South China Sea and Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea from Ukraine. The document does not expressly “overturn” the strategies of President Barack Obama or his predecessors, but it frames Trump’s priorities differently, the third official said. Trump’s most significant foreign policy and national security decisions mostly have been cast as

principles: protecting the homeland, promoting American prosperity, demonstrating peace through strength and advancing American influence in an evercompetitive world. While the administration often says that “America First” does not mean “America Alone,” the national security strategy makes clear that the U.S. will stand up for itself even at the cost of alienating allies. The last national strategy document, prepared by Obama in 2015, declared climate change an “urgent and growing threat to our national security.” The Trump plan removes that determination — following the administration’s decision to pull out of the Paris climate accord. The strategy sets a goal of being an “energy-dominant nation” but does say that the U.S. “recognizes the importance of environmental stewardship.” (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP)

POLITICS President Trump framed a new national security strategy Monday that cast his election as a pivot from failed economic policies and shortsighted negotiating strategies. “You spoke loud and you spoke clear,” Trump said of his upset election last year. “On November 8, you voted to make America great again. You embraced new leadership and new strategies and also a glorious new hope.” The congressionally mandated National Security Strategy presents China and Russia as competitors that want to realign global power in their interests, potentially threatening the U.S. “Whether we like it or not, we are engaged in a new era of competition,” Trump said before a private audience in Washington. Trump used the rollout to reiterate his commitment to an “America First” doctrine and a focus on fighting terrorism and protecting U.S. borders. He listed what he called successes, including withdrawal from the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal and the “very expensive and unfair Paris climate accord.” Trump also used the moment to tout the surging stock market, economic growth and the expected passage of a tax-cut package. Trump administration officials said the strategy, a kind of

SOCIAL MEDIA Twitter suspended the accounts of well-known white nationalists Monday, moving swiftly after putting into place new rules on what it sees as abusive content. The account of far-right group Britain First, a small group that regularly posts inflammatory videos purporting to show Muslims engaged in acts of violence, was among the first to go dark. The individual accounts of two of its leaders, Jayda Fransen and Paul Golding, were also suspended. President Trump caused a stir last month when he retweeted a post by Fransen, drawing criticism from British Prime Minister Theresa May. The guidelines, announced a month ago and put into force this week, address hateful images or symbols, including those attached to user profiles. Monitors at the company will weigh hateful imagery in the same way they do graphic violence and adult content. If a user wants to post symbols or images that might be considered hateful, the post must be marked “sensitive media.” Other users would then see a warning that would allow them to decide whether to view the post. The white nationalist Richard Spencer, whose account was not suspended, tweeted that he lost more than a hundred followers in the past 24 hours and noted that he didn’t “see any systematic method to the #TwitterPurge.”

President Trump on Monday reiterated his “America First” doctrine.

Trump on Russia President Trump did not discuss Russian meddling in the 2016 election Monday, though his national strategy document notes that “actors such as Russia are using information tools in an attempt to undermine the legitimacy of democracies.” He did say during his remarks that Russian President Vladimir Putin called him over the weekend to thank the CIA for help in stopping a terror plot in St. Petersburg. “They were able to apprehend these terrorists before the event with no loss of life, and that’s a great thing and the way it’s supposed to work,” Trump said. ATLANTA The nation’s air-travel system struggled to get back on schedule Monday after a weekend fire and blackout at the world’s busiest airport forced the cancellation of more than 1,500 flights just days before the start of the Christmas rush. Stranded travelers sat on the floor, slumped in chairs or stood in long lines at ticket counters a day after the underground blaze knocked out electricity and crippled Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport for about 11 hours. A spokesman for Delta Air Lines, which has its hub in Atlanta, said most of its passengers were booked on other flights scheduled to leave Monday, adding that the airline should be “largely if not completely” back to normal by today. The fire broke out Sunday afternoon next to equipment for a backup system, causing that to fail, too. Power wasn’t fully restored until about midnight. During the blackout, thousands of travelers waited on planes or in the terminals. The control tower did not lose power because it has

a separate electrical feed, and planes that were in the air and close to Atlanta were allowed to land. But other inbound flights were diverted to other cities, and outgoing flights were halted. Anthony Foxx, who served as U.S. transportation secretary under President Barack Obama, was among the many travelers stuck for hours on a plane on the tarmac. He blasted airport officials, saying the problem was “compounded by confusion and poor communication.” “Total and abject failure here at ATL Airport today,” he tweeted, adding that there was “no excuse for lack of workable redundant power source. NONE!” Georgia Power CEO Paul Bowers apologized and blamed the

fire on a failure in a switch gear. On Monday, stranded travelers sat on the floor, charging their cellphones. An Atlanta city employee gave out candy, and Delta employees handed out doughnuts. Delta customers flying to or from Atlanta were allowed to change their travel plans without being hit with a $200 penalty. The airline encouraged travelers not to pick up their bags Monday because of congestion. Delta canceled about 1,000 flights Sunday and 400 Monday. American Airlines canceled around 50 but said it was back on a normal schedule. Southwest, United and JetBlue also reported scores of cancellations and delays. DON SCHANCHE JR. (AP)

Young friends play fast

Kuznetsov-Vrana pairing offers glimpse at a future beyond Ovechkin and Backstrom NHL Jakub Vrana rubbed his hands over his face and sighed, struggling to come up with a definitive answer. A surprising offensive tear has meant that everyone wants to know the correct way to say his first name, but Vrana insists he doesn’t have a preference between the Czech “Ya-kub,” or the Americanized “Jacob.” He’s also added “Ya-koob” and “Jake” as acceptable variations. “Whatever,” Vrana finally said with a smile and a shrug. As a rookie with the Capitals, Vrana is still reserved, even around teammates who affectionately call him “V.” Enter center Evgeny Kuznetsov, who’s made it his personal mission to help Vrana get comfortable.

Their connection is also the reason Vrana’s name has been coming up so often lately. Washington’s long had the dynamic duo of center Nicklas Backstrom and winger Alex Ovechkin, but a new, young version has started to bond. Kuznetsov and Vrana have been on the ice together for nine Capitals goals in 12 games since coach Barry Trotz paired them on a line. With his goal against the Bruins last week, Vrana became the first Caps rookie to score 10 goals since Kuznetsov did it in the 2014-15 season. When Vrana, 21, went through a scoring slump earlier in the season, Trotz made him a healthy scratch and criticized him. Rather than let his standing on the team derail his season like it

Oshie ‘ready’ to return Forward T.J. Oshie was a full participant Monday at Capitals practice and is expected to return to the lineup tonight in Dallas after missing the past six games with a concussion. might have last year ago — when he was sent down to the AHL after playing in 21 games — Vrana responded with six goals and two assists in the 14 games since. “I’m not putting my head in the trash there,” Vrana said. “I

tried to keep going.” Vrana and Kuznetsov are two of the Capitals’ fastest players, so their speed naturally complements each other. But there’s more to their successful partnership. When Vrana gets too focused on his mistakes, Kuznetsov will tell him a joke. Once considered a defensive liability, Kuznetsov has improved his two-way play to the point that he’s encouraged Vrana to take chances because Kuznetsov can cover for him if there’s a turnover. “It’s easy to put pressure on him, but it’s tough to help him,” Kuznetsov said. “I mean, mentally you’ve got to find a way how to talk with him, and you see the results.” ISABELLE KHURSHUDYAN UDYAN

The Wizards (16-14) are 2-1 since John Wall returned from a knee injury, and the Pelicans visit tonight (7, NBCSWA) with two of the best bigs in the NBA. Here are a few things to watch. (EXPRESS)

3 Likely shootout New Orleans (15-15) is on track for the playoffs because its offense averages 110.8 points, fifth in the NBA as of Monday. But the Pelicans’ differential is minus-0.9.

2 Tough matchup inside With DeMarcus Cousins and Anthony Davis as their leading scorers, the Pelicans average 50.8 points in the paint, second-best in the NBA as of Monday.

1 Wall ramping up Since returning to the floor, Wall has yet to score more than 15 points. But he’s increased his minutes in all three games, logging 32 in Sunday’s loss to Cleveland.

Washington Post sports columnist Dan Steinberg conducted an experiment this weekend at FedEx Field. ESPN president exits to confront addiction Skipper says struggles with substance abuse led to his resignation

EVERY TIME IT RAINS CHUCK BURTON (AP)

MEDIA ESPN President John Skipper, one of the most powerful figures in sports and media, resigned from the network Monday, telling employees in an email that he’s struggled with a substance addiction for many years. Skipper has been the network’s guiding force in a tumultuous period, helping it secure TV rights and figuring out a plan to steady the ship amid changing viewership habits that resulted in a dramatic drop in subscriptions in recent years. Despite these challenges, Disney reportedly had recently signed him to a contract extension that was supposed to keep him at the helm of ESPN through 2021. “I have struggled for many years with a substance addiction,” Skipper wrote to ESPN employees in an email. “I have decided that the most important thing I can do right now is to take care of my problem. … I come to this public disclosure with embarrassment, trepidation and a feeling of having let others I care about down.” Skipper, who also served as cochairman of the Disney Media

John Skipper was under contract through 2021 but says he needs to focus on his health.

Networks, said he discussed the matter with Disney executives “and we mutually agreed that it was appropriate that I resign.” “I join John Skipper’s many friends and colleagues across the company in wishing him well during this challenging time,” Bob Iger, the Disney chairman and chief executive officer, said in a statement. “I respect his candor and support his decision to focus on his health and his family.” Skipper’s departure is immediate, and he’ll be replaced in the interim by George Bodenheimer, who was ESPN’s president from 1998-2011 and the network’s executive chairman until May 2014. Bodenheimer will serve as acting chairman for 90 days, ESPN said, and will help Iger identify a

permanent replacement. Skipper, who turns 62 today, came from a publishing background and joined ESPN after stints at Rolling Stone and Us Weekly. He started at ESPN in 1997 as senior vice president and general manager of ESPN The Magazine and was elevated to company president on Jan. 1, 2012. In the 2011 ESPN oral history “Those Guys Have All the Fun,” Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner described Skipper as well-liked and adept at work and play. “He was fun to be with, he would sometimes smoke pot with me, and he’s got that wry sense of humor, and that devotion to music,” Wenner said. Feel-good holiday eats The holiday season’s parties and edible gifts — cakes, dips, bacon-wrapped bites, and grogs and glasses of spirits — lift us up, imparting a warm cheer to what would otherwise be a dreary time of year. But those indulgences can leave us feeling sluggish and uncomfortable

A hot cup of tea hits the spot when you are not truly hungry but crave a little something, a pick-me-up or a break any time of year. Each sip slows you down, allows you to exhale and, if the tea has caffeine, gives you a gentle energy boost. During the holidays, a brew of spiced tea such as chai, or any blend with warm flavors such as cinnamon, ginger or peppermint, gives you the essence of the season. And it warms your hands, as a mug of mulled cider or hot cocoa would, but it’s totally calorie-free (unless you add sweetener — but even then, a teaspoon of honey is just about 20 calories). Stash a few tea sachets in your bag or at work for some holiday flavor when you need it.

Pumpkin has a warm-andfuzzy factor, which is why you find pumpkin-spice everything for sale as soon as the first leaf flutters off a tree in the fall. It also works throughout the winter months to infuse everyday foods that might otherwise feel humdrum with a cozy, comfort-food essence. Real pumpkin puree spiked with cinnamon, ginger, cloves and nutmeg provides old-fashioned heartwarming goodness, plus vitamins, fiber and antioxidants. You can roast and puree pumpkin yourself or get it from a can. Stir it into oatmeal, add it to smoothies or use it to flavor your yogurt, along with those warming spices and, perhaps, a drizzle of real maple syrup.

A big pot of vegetablebased soup can get you through the busy workweek, making for an easy, nourishing snack in a mug or as a full dinner in a bowl with a hunk of wholegrain bread, especially during the holiday season. It is easily made ahead and reheatable in minutes in any portion size, so after a day racing around in the holiday crush, you’ll have a crowd-pleasing, bellywarming dinner on hand for however many hungry people show up. Keeping the soup vegetable-based means it also fills in the gaps from all the holiday parties where produce usually takes a back seat to sausages, cheeses and sweets, if it gets any play at all.

Cooked, chilled jumbo shrimp hugging the rim of a cocktail glass or arranged on an elegant platter is a classic that immediately spells c-e-l-e-b-r-a-t-e. When you see it served at a holiday fete, get it while you can, because it usually goes fast. It’s one of those rare party foods that is festive and healthy in equal measure, packed with lean protein and essential minerals and delicious and satisfying with few calories. The same goes for other shellfish, including crab claws and oysters. Pile your plate with those when they’re available and automatically shift the balance in a healthier direction without feeling the least bit deprived.

Sparkling water, which has become the new “it” beverage over the past few years, could be your new holiday party BFF, helping you maximize flavor and fun while keeping your wits about you. Poured into a wine or cocktail glass with a twist of citrus, the effervescent beverage feels extra festive. Check out some of the exciting flavors like passion fruit and raspberry — and consider bringing a sixpack of that to the party to share — or add a splash of cranberry juice to plain sparkling water for a beautiful blush beverage. You could drink that all night or alternate a glass of sparkling water with each glass of wine or a cocktail to help you pace yourself.

Two recent mortality studies concluded that exercise — even activity as light as walking a dog — is healthier than previously believed. The studies (from Harvard University and the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm) are based on objective — as opposed to self-reported — measures of physical activity. They found that the most active subjects had a 50 to 70 percent decline in mortality compared with the least active participants. Past self-reported studies had pegged this benefit at 20 to 35 percent. Harvard researchers used accelerometers on 16,000 U.S. women, who wore them for 15 hours a day on four or more days for an average of 2.3 years. The Swedes gave similar devices to 851 subjects, including 400 men, who wore them for 14-plus hours on four or more days for 14.2 years. Both concluded that those who moved a lot enjoyed a substantial longevity benefit. (TWP)

fit+wellness My friendship is paying the price

BEN CLAASSEN III (FOR EXPRESS)

Q. I have a lengthy friendship

DR. ANDREA BONIOR | BAGGAGE CHECK

Is there still room for joy on my diet? Q. I gained weight after dealing with some medical issues. I am working on losing it — maybe not always as hard as I could, but I am making slow and steady progress. How do I handle all the scrumptious holiday temptations? Visualizing celery and carrots as hunks of chocolate is not working so far. I don’t want to miss the fun parties and socializing. I WANT TO STAY ON TRACK Celery chocolate — the nectar of the gods! Seriously, congrats on the slow and steady progress. Relax your expectations a bit for these gatherings, so you don’t end up in the “I fell off the wagon, therefore I must eat the wagon” trap. Let yourself taste everything you want, leaving some amount on your plate. Use gum and a water bottle to keep your mouth occupied when you’ve

decided you’re done. Have a physical reminder like a string around your wrist that catches your eye and nudges you toward mindfulness. Pair some of the healthier treats with some of the treaty-treats on your plate — strawberries and chocolate actually do make a match. Finally, go heavy on the people you want to spend time with, and try to lose yourself in good conversation.

that I worry is going to end over money. My friend struggles with her low salary and debt. I recently came into some money. We like to do the same things — movies, spas, dinner — but for her, they’re rare splurges. I am now doing them more often. I want her to join, but she is uncomfortable with my paying her way, as I’ve offered. Now we’re sort of at a standstill and spending less time together. AT A CROSSROADS As sweet as it is that you want to bring your friend into your new way of life, it’s clear she’s not comfortable in it. Perhaps being subsidized would make her feel annoyingly imbalanced or beholden. Maybe her psyche just prefers these events remain a rare splurge. This need not mean a “standstill,” though. You had a longtime friendship before this that did not require such frequent luxuries, so why does it have to now, just because your status has changed? In good relationships, people adjust together to accommodate each other’s life shifts — from marriage and parenthood to veganism, health changes or job shifts. Here, the adjustment is yours to make. Keep what was good from before, and do the mud wraps some other time.

The Avengers

MARVEL AND 20TH CENTURY FOX

entertainment

X-Men

The building of an empire Disney’s acquisition of Fox unites fan-favorite franchises under one big umbrella SCREENS Disney’s announcement Thursday that it’s buying most of movie goliath Fox for $52.4 billion in stock is set to create a new nirvana for fans, one that reunites superheroes and sci-fi characters long separated by an energy barrier of corporate legalism. Take, for instance, the fractured world of Marvel heroes. For years, the X-Men (Wolverine, Storm, Professor X and the crew) and the Fantastic Four (Thing, Invisible Woman, et al.) have battled bad dudes from the studios of 20th Century Fox. Meanwhile Iron Man, Captain America and other Avengers vanquished villains in another corner of the galaxy run by Disney. Almost ne’er the twain did meet — but that could soon change. (Though note that Sony still has rights to Spider-Man.)

In a related fashion, rights to the various “Star Wars” films have been scattered, but could soon be unified. Those old enough to remember the 20th Century Fox opening to the original “Star Wars” (Episode IV) may no longer have to search far, far away to find the other titles. The original was made and distributed by Fox, but it was a quirk of the series. Episodes I, II, III, V and VI were owned by Lucasfilm (bought by Disney in 2012) and distributed by Fox. You can only stream all first six movies endlessly if you buy them and register them through the not-so-popular UltraViolet system backed by several studios. (You can also rent them digitally.) “The Force Awakens” — Episode VII — is available via Starz. This deal may finally put these titles in one place. Add the “Avatar” franchise

It’s a sports deal, too Buried within the Disney-Fox deal is Disney’s acquisition of Fox Sports Regional Networks, a collection of local cable channels. Disney-owned ESPN will be acquiring a massive amount of new content, as Fox Sports’ 22 regional sports networks (RSNs) control the local cable rights to dozens of pro and college teams. Put it this way: The total price tag of the Disney-Fox deal is estimated to be $52.4 billion. CNBC’s David Faber estimates that Fox’s RSNs alone would be valued at $20 billion. (TWP)

into the mix, and the company that launched Mickey Mouse will be an unavoidable presence at the box office — and online. Disney has announced plans to launch its own streaming service in 2019, when it will pull titles like

BBC orders “definitive” documentary on Harvey Weinstein scandal

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and Disney’s “Moana” from Netflix to move onto its own platform. After Fox’s deal to send its movies to HBO ends reportedly in 2022, its films will also move to the Disney streaming platforms. “Creating a direct-to-consumer relationship is vital to the future of our media businesses and it’s our highest priority,” Disney CEO Bob Iger told investors in a Thursday conference call. He said Disney’s current thinking is to split its streaming services into three brands, such as a Disney-labeled family service that would fold in National Geographic, Marvel, Pixar and Lucasfilm; an ESPN-led sports service; and an adult-oriented service that would incorporate Hulu (which Disney will now have a majority stake e in) and some of Fox Fox’s s shows. RYAN NAKASHIMA AND MATT O’BRIEN (AP)

A real-life case has gone cold in ‘Wormwood’ TV REVIEW Errol Morris’ new project is an intriguing if overwrought docuseries for Netflix called “Wormwood,” which takes an old story — the CIA’s connection to the 1953 death of germ-warfare scientist Frank Olson, who either jumped or was thrown from the window of a Manhattan hotel room — and tries to bring its darkest and still-uncertain elements out into the light of day. The 69-year-old director presents “Wormwood” as a stylish hybrid of many forms — documentary, “Mad Men”-era noir, art collage and clip-job — none of which comes through with total success. He devotes a large chunk of the series to scripted reenactments and other supposed events, starring actor Peter Sarsgaard as Olson. The six episodes, roughly 40 minutes each, peel this onion as slowly and artfully as possible, taking laps around the story in hopes that multiple perspectives and resonant mantras of facts and findings will help the viewer become obsessed. It’s possible that some will; as a binge-watch, “Wormwood” is painless but not nearly as captivating as it attempts to be. If it had been told in a straightforward manner, a review of the Olson case might hold a viewer’s interest for a 75-minute film. After all, who doesn’t love a cautionary tale about unchecked powers within the intelligence world? HANK STUEVER (THE WASHINGTON POST)
