In the world there is, parallel to the force of death and constraint, an enormous force of persuasion that is called culture. Albert Camus, Notebooks 1951-1959
Art is about life and death and everything in between. As festival chairperson, I am delighted to welcome you to the specially expanded seven-day programme of the 10th Drogheda Arts Festival. As the first arts festival of the summer, we hope that this anniversary programme acts as a dawn chorus to this year’s summer season. Set against the North East’s most important medieval town and hinterland, Drogheda Arts Festival engages strongly with its environment, heritage and people, highlighting the best of the indigenous arts and showcasing the most exciting and innovative practice from Ireland and abroad. Coming from near and far, this year’s selection of artists will be presenting a wide variety of work that will entertain, challenge and delight, probe, reflect and, in many cases, we hope, transform. Right here, you will find both the large and small - from a very special twelve-hour concert during which the audience are encouraged to sleep, to a performance of the entire Bible in just two hours. We discover the remarkable in the everyday with a theatrical journey into the lives and stories of a single street in Drogheda, and explore the ‘re-framing’ of the domestic in Irish visual art. We offer the pure and unadorned in four solo acoustic music performances at Beaulieu Chapel, the spiritual in devotional song from the Outer Hebrides, and the monumental in an ambitious performance of work for string quartet and bass voice. We celebrate Irish traditional music and song, and highlight the sublime with Lisa O’Neill’s unique style of contemporary folk. Differing cultures of music and dance combine seamlessly in This is How we Fly, and there will be street performers offering all manner of entertainment throughout the town. Watch out for the video mapping on St Laurence’s Gate, created entirely by children! This festival programme also features the inaugural Festival Public Interview with Deirdre O’Kane, four short original films made by young people from Dundalk, Belfast and Monaghan, a series of events in the truly idyllic setting of Beaulieu House, a rehearsed poetry reading performed by Declan Conlon, film, visual art, talks, literature and a special welcome to Drogheda series of Boyneside treasure tours. Drogheda Arts Festival would not be possible without the stalwart core funding from Drogheda Borough Council, festival programming grant from the Arts Council, key sponsorship from Coca-Cola International Services and the many local businesses inspired by the arts. I would also like to acknowledge the incredible effort by the programming team who delight in presenting the festival each year to you. One secret: this year we have made concession ticket prices available to all – you just need to book in advance! Bí linn, agus bí páirteach sa cheiliúradh agus sa phleidhcíocht! There are many kinds of spaces, both physical and metaphysical, that artists play with in their work, and many spaces that we, as humans inhabit. However, perhaps the most familiar space, the one that has been the stimulus for much artistic enquiry, be it visual or otherwise, has been the domestic, or home space, as that is where our earliest and most formative experiences are shaped. This exhibition takes as its root the domestic in all its simple complexities and
contradictions, to ask what facts and fictions the domestic suggests to the artist and viewer today. Beginning with works that allude to the domestic within the Drogheda Municipal Art Collection, these have acted as pinpoints in which to thread contemporary works to create new ways of looking and experiencing the domestic in art and life. In bringing together three different voices: Aoife Ruane, the director of the gallery; Amanda Coogan an artist and Jane Humphries an art

Yes, it’s an affectionate, irreverent roller coaster ride from fig leaves to final judgment as the bad boys of abridgement tackle the great theological questions: Did Adam and Eve have navels? GAME ON DROICHEAD ARTS CENTRE AND CODERDOJO PRESENT
GAME ON is a two-day event merging traditional artforms with digital technologies. In the forty years since the introduction of the first home video game, this field has attracted exceptional artistic talent. A blend of traditional art forms like painting, writing, sculpture, music, storytelling and cinematography, video games offer artists a previously unprecedented method of communicating with and engaging audiences. This event is the outcome of an Artist in Residence programme with CoderDojo, Drogheda since September 2013. Artist Vivienne Byrne and a team of artists and programming mentors have worked with young coders to respond to the theme ‘Real and Imaginative Worlds’. They combined both technical and creative expertise to develop original games, stories, sculptures, animations and music compositions inspired by our heritage town.
This project was developed through a partnership between Droichead Arts Centre and CoderDojo, Drogheda with kind support from CREATE under the Artist in the Community Scheme. We are also grateful for the generous support from Mcor and DKIT.

LISA O’NEILL 2013 WAS AN INCREDIBLE YEAR FOR LISA O’NEILL. With a new album Same Cloth or Not, she won over fans and critics alike. Her rich aged folk voice, melancholic melodies and brilliant lyrical wit marked her as a genuinely unique Irish artist. Her live shows have become much talked about affairs with the audience welling up one moment, and in stitches the next. The new album was recorded in a beautiful cottage rented in Wicklow in the winter months with David Kitt producing and Karl Oldum engineering and includes her regular band-mates Stina Sandstrom (vocals) and Mossy Nolan (bouzouki). Having toured Ireland and mainland Europe in 2013 with Glen Hansard, supported David Gray on his Irish tour and James Yorkston
on his UK tour, Drogheda Arts Festival is delighted to welcome this talented singer / songwriter to Drogheda for one night only! “One of the most outstanding Irish albums of the year.”- The Irish Times “O’Neill is in a league of her own, her song craft and performance capabilities really are extraordinary.” – Eamon Sweeney, the Irish Independent

Monk’s Music is music that transcends its own technical brilliance to become a truly illuminating thing to experience; here, Raskatov’s music itself is a mysterious and seductive country to explore. “Alexander Raskatov’s Monk’s Music, a daring revisiting of the shape of Haydn’s Seven Last Words. POETRY EVENT LAY MNEMOSYNE IN DUST
BY AUSTIN CLARKE: A REHEARSED READING Performed by Declan Conlan Directed by Annabelle Comyn
One of our most respected stage actors, Declan Conlon, brings the words of Austin Clarke to life in this rehearsed reading. First published in 1966, the intensely personal Mnemosyne Lay in Dust is a haunting narrative poem about memory, detailing the fictional Maurice Devanes’s nervous breakdown and subsequent recovery. Mnemosyne was the Titan Goddess of remembrance and the inventress of language and words. Austin Clarke (1896-1974) was a literary journalist, dramatist, novelist and broadcaster, and one of the most important Irish poets of the 20th century. His main contribution to Irish poetry was the ingenuity with which he borrowed from classical Irish language poetry when writing in English, which meant that his verse was based not so much on metre as on
complex patterns of assonance, consonance and half rhyme. This work in progress, commissioned by Drogheda Arts Festival, Poetry Ireland and Highlanes Gallery, is directed by award-winning theatre director, Annabelle Comyn, with sound design by Phillip Stewart. With an introduction to Clarke’s life and work by Irish Times Poetry Editor and poet, Gerard Smyth, this special rehearsed reading is presented within the unique and atmospheric setting of Highlanes Gallery. Sunday 4 May Venue: Highlanes Municipal Art Gallery, Laurence St. Time: 5.00pm Tickets: 25 (in advance) / 27 (on the day)

THE LEWIS PSALM SINGERS
SCOTS GAELIC DEVOTIONAL SONG FROM THE OUTER HEBRIDES
The ancient tradition of communal psalmsinging in Scots Gaelic which still survives in some remote areas of the Outer Hebrides has been described as “one of the most extraordinary vocal sounds in the world”. The pastor or a “precentor” sings out a line of the psalm and the whole congregation then follows, but since each individual sings their own version of the melody with different variations and ornamentations an extraordinary swirling surge of sound is created, with cascading waves of melody which is absolutely spine-tingling. For the singers this is a deeply spiritual experience. The Free Church in the small community of Back (Am Bac) on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer
Hebrides is one place where this tradition survives and a group of singers from this community, lead by precentor Calum Martin, bring this ethereal music to the Drogheda Arts Festival. These are ordinary people who produce an extraordinary and deeply moving musical experience. Featuring the great Scots Gaelic singer Mary Smith (Mairi Nic a’ Ghobhainn). Sunday 4 May Venue: Augustinian Church, Shop St Time: 7.00pm Tickets: 210 (in advance) / 212 (on the day)

THIS IS HOW WE FLY
TiHwF brings together four performers, each rooted in different cultures and musical vocabularies – a sublime Irish fiddler who’s not afraid to step outside convention, a sophisticated Appalachian step dancer stepping into the rhythmic foreground, a thoughtful Dublin jazzman stretching beyond the constraints of the genre, and a lyrical Swedish percussionist redefining the melodic and sonic place of drums within the contours of traditional music. The collective pedigree is eye catching, and includes bands like The Gloaming, The Chieftains, Darol Anger and Gjallarhorn, along with interdisciplinary work in theatre, dance and contemporary music.
