CELEBRATING 10 YEARS

Welcome Ardee Baroque celebrates 10 years with a line-up of music and special events, ensuring a memorable festival of all things Baroque. Our founding partner, Irish Baroque Orchestra, returns with two concerts of Telemann’s finest, finishing each concert with a celebratory piece of Vivaldi. We also welcome Irish Youth Opera, Conal Duffy and Michael O’Neill, Kids Classics, Larry Ward, and the Gregory Walkers. In between the music, be sure to see Grinding Out Transcendence, an exhibition of photographs of Ardee Baroque 2012 by Mid-Louth Photographic Society. As Ardee Baroque’s first chapter draws to a close, and a new chapter begins, we welcome all to Ardee to join us in a long Gathering weekend of great music, in a warm and stimulating atmosphere. Today, Telemann is recognised as a composer who synthesised various styles, and was crucial to the development of early Classical music. ‘Summer’ from Vivaldi’s ‘Four Seasons’ completes the programme, and ‘Winter’ provides an exhilarating end to IBO’s second concert on Sunday evening.

A Day in the Life of Vivaldi a workshop for kids by Kids’ Classics

Ever wondered what life was like for a Baroque composer? See what a day in Vivaldi’s life entailed, including travelling, rehearsing and composing. You will be invited to join in rehearsing some of his music with handheld percussion instruments - a great insight into the man and his music, which can be heard at both IBO concerts during Ardee Baroque ‘13. A Day in the Life of Vivaldi is free, but remember to come in time, as latecomers will be at a disadvantage. Special thanks to the Library Service of Louth County Council for hosting A Day in the Life of Vivaldi.”

‘Hang the Harpers . . . ’ Music in Ireland in the Baroque Era

Music by Carolan, Ó Cathain, Thomas & William Connellan, and others. Conal and Michael are from Dundalk and Ardee respectively, and will be playing music from the 17th and 18th centuries that would have been heard in Ireland at that time. Despite harpers, pipers and bards being under threat of execution in Ireland in the 17th century, some of out most iconic and long-lived music was composed in the midst of this oppression. Conal is an All-Ireland-winning piper, who has performed as soloist with the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland in London’s Royal Albert Hall, with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra in Áras an Uachtaráin, and will perform excerpts from The Brendan Voyage with the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland on their upcoming tour to Abu Dhabi. Michael has been playing the harp for eight years. He has completed his studies with the Royal Irish Academy of Music, and has performed with the Meath Harp Ensemble in many prestigious venues in Ireland, including Dublin Castle and the National Concert Hall. Both Michael and Conal are recipients of CreateLouth Music Awards from Louth Local Authorities in recent years.

Perrault by The Gregory Walkers

Many of the fairy tales we know best today have come down to us from the stories written by Frenchman Charles Perrault. ‘The Labyrinth of Versailles’ is a specially-devised concert for families where the musicians use music by composers such as Lully, Couperin, Corbetta, and Robert de Visée to recreate the tales, and the setting of the Palace of Versailles during the reign of the Sun King, Louis XIV, where Perrault wrote most of his fairy tales. Join us for a memorable jaunt through 17th century France, where Tales from Mother Goose come alive, and the music tells a story. Larry Ward has recently published a book containing all known poetry of Patrick Reilly who hailed from Drumconrath, and reflecting on his life and times. This lecture will discuss some of the poetry, including poems making particular reference to Ardee and Drumconrath and surrounding areas, and give an insight into many of the references to local people and places which have been lost in time. Reference will also be made to other local poets and ballad writers of the era and the rivalries between them.

Ardee Baroque ‘13 draws to a close with IBO’s second concert featuring the music of Telemann. Considered by his 18th century contemporaries to be the greatest living composer, Telemann can also be seen as an important figure in opening music up to wider audiences. Through his public concerts, he introduced to the general public music previously reserved for the court, the aristocracy, or a limited number of burghers. Making great music more accessible has been the shared aim of IBO and Ardee Baroque for the past ten years, and this celebration of Telemann is an apt way to bring the curtain down on Ardee Baroque ’13.
