Dental health care in the UK In UK, the NHS system provides dental services through private dental practices and dentists. About half of the income of dentists in England come from work sub-contracted from the NHS, however not all dentists choose to do NHS work. According to NHS Choices "all the treatment that your dentist believes is necessary to achieve and maintain good oral health is available on the NHS. This means that the NHS provides any treatment you need to keep your mouth, teeth and gums healthy and free of pain”: dentures, crowns and bridges, orthodontistry, root canal treatment, scaling and polishing, and white fillings. A dentist is allowed to refuse to provide treatment under NHS and can perform the same treatment privately. Many patients pay today higher sums for private treatments, because dental services under NHS are not that widely available anymore. Directive 2011/24/EU on patients’ rights in cross-border healthcare clarifies the
rules on access to healthcare in another EU country, including reimbursement. EU countries had until 25 October 2013 to pass their own laws implementing the Directive. On October 25, 2013, the Directive came into effect. ‘This Directive should apply to individual patients who decide to seek healthcare in a Member State other than the Member State of affiliation.’ ‘The obligation to reimburse costs of cross-border healthcare should be limited to healthcare to which the insured person is entitled according to the legislation of the Member State of affiliation.’ ‘Patients should enjoy a guarantee of assumption of the costs of that healthcare at least at the level as would be provided for the same healthcare, had it been provided in the Member State of affiliation.’ The Directive is available here.
