This issue of EM went to press during the time when Nigerians are desperately praying for a safer country and the return of the kidnapped school girls. At EM, we are saying a prayer for Nigeria and also praying that the over 200 girls are returned safely to their homes. This issue focuses on Music. Yes, the music industry has taken a step in the right direction and who better to give us a great insight than the music guru at Channel O, Ms Leslie Kasumba. She let’s us into her humble beginnings and how she is taking her career and her role at Channel O to the next level. Not leaving it there, we give the EM rundown of the Women in the Music scene in Nigeria, pretty impressive list, but I wish we had more women though as the industry is still largely male dominated. The EMAC walk Abuja held and was extremely successful. Thanks to all the Abuja Exquisite people, we love you. Ladies, remember to regularly have your screening for cervical and breast cancer done. The EMAC walk Lagos will be held on the 6th of september. See images of the Abuja walk and details of the Lagos walk in following pages. As I sign off, it is important to state that nothing happens just from you sitting on a sofa and wishing for change to occur. If you want change, go and make it happen. I love you guys and keep the emails, tweets and more coming. Have a great month and love always.

It makes all the hours spent trying to find the right mix all worth it. This summer, fashion promises to have us looking just as trendy in half the time...two words MATCHING SETS. Matching your clothes either in print or in colour is not only cool, coordinated and chic, but also gives off a refreshingly effortless vibe. IF MEN W ROTE WOMEN’S MAGAZIN ES When it comes to magazines, women tend to be more faithful subscribers than men. This is evident as the best selling magazine in the world is a women’s magazine. Now while some women’s magazines are more substantial in content than others, it can be agreed that at the very least, part of the reason some if not most of these magazines are as successful as they are, is because they deal (or try to) with sex and relationships topics and issues.

N

ow this is not to say that it’s wrong or anything, but with heterosexual women being the majority (as of the time this article was published) group in the female gender, it would be interesting to at least think what would happen if MEN wrote women’s magazines? Now before you get the girls together for a man bashing frenzy, consider this. A lot of women’s magazines discuss, teach and advice women on how to dress, cook and even please their men in the bedroom (or kitchen, or car, swimming pool or wherever these women’s magazines now swear is our biggest turn on and fantasy location) amongst a host of other things, but wouldn’t it be a better idea to at least get insights from men? The ones you go through, these so called hassles for? For instance, did you know we are really not that interested in your hair? I mean we have preferences, long, short, blonde, black and what not, but as long as it’s neat and tidy, we are not too fussed about what style it’s in. We absolutely love your heels but don’t see or understand why you need so many, especially when most of them look the same. It’s not all bad though, we actually go through some of these magazines as they cover some fun and sometimes interesting topics (to us) and have visually appealing hotties on their covers. But if women’s magazines were written by men, then maybe, just maybe, there won’t be so much confusion about what we want. Think about it. Br o u g h t t o y o u by ku lt u re d m a n . c o m

ExquisiteYOU

Stop Procrastinating, Start Living It’s helpful to know that emotions–sadness, anger, and fear–are just pure energy in your body. Look at the word “emotion.” It’s energy (e) in motion. Take some time in private to express those emotions constructively. By crying to express sadness, punching or yelling into a pillow or stomping around to release the anger, or doing exaggerated shivering for the fear, you give yourself permission to express the emotion. The energy dissipates and you won’t feel stuck. It’s like letting steam out of a pressure cooker. 4. Do some planning. Start by getting clear on your goal. Good planning is the foundation of success for most any project. It’s helpful to write it down so you have it for ready reference. Your goal is your beacon to keep you on track in treacherous waters. For example, “I want to be facile with this new software so it’s a useful tool, not an impediment to my progress.” Having a clear and precise idea of your goal will keep you oriented and stay motivated.

Everyone procrastinates. We usually do it to avoid a task that’s unpleasant or daunting. But when procrastinating starts to interfere with performance at work–by causing us to feel worried, fearful, and stressed-out, or by causing others to feel anxious because we’re holding up progress–then it’s time to stop putting the task aside and get on with it.

Here are 10 ways to get out of the quicksand of procrastination and reap numerous benefits, which include improved productivity, enhanced mood, less stress, better coworker relationships, a sense of accomplishment, and restored reputation at work as a “doer.” 1. Identify the situation.

First, write down the specific task you’ve been putting off. For example, “I have to convert all of my client contacts and notes into the new file-sharing software system and learn how to navigate its tools and folders.” Writing down the task helps you dial in the job at hand. 2. Pinpoint your emotions.

What’s preventing you from diving in to this task? It’s typically one or more of three core emotions. Perhaps, to use the above example, you’re intimidated by all the new bells and whistles you’ll have to learn (fear). Or you’re resentful about having to do this when the old system worked perfectly well (anger). Or you’re bummed that you’re just not tech savvy (sadness). This step helps you see the act of dragging your heels for what it truly is–an emotional reaction. 3. Deal with those emotions. EXQUISITE MAGAZINE

tion at having to do this task, you might say, “I’m doing this because I want to be a team player” or “My boss thinks I’m the best person to do this.”

Without the emotional energy dragging you down, you’ll feel prepared to take the leap and be amazed how easy it is as you just focus on one step at a time.

6. Break your goal into a series of 9. Battle resistance. small, doable steps. As you move through the task,

You’ve envisioned the task, dealt with what’s been holding you back, and fixed your destructive thinking. Completing the task requires deciding when you’ll get started and figuring out a doable step-by-step game plan. Write it down, schedule it, and commit to it. Then go on a mental journey, plotting out each part of the task, including details such as whom you will talk with and what about, where and when you’ll be working, and how long you expect each part to take. 7. Anticipate roadblocks.

Once you’ve created a game plan, step back and imagine challenges and obstacles that are likely to pop up along the way. For example, other projects with shorter deadlines might land on your desk. How will you tackle such challenges in order to keep moving forward with the big task at hand? For every such scenario, have a tactic ready for sticking to your original plan. You may also want 5. Find some “truths.” to find someone to support your Identify sabotaging thoughts that efforts and with whom you can are hanging in the wings, ready to check in on a regular basis. 8. Take the leap. pounce in a weak moment, then With all this preparation, it’s time come up with a couple of truths to contradict them. For example if to tackle the task you’ve put off. Before you do, acknowledge your you continually tell yourself “I’ll never be able to learn all this,” you emotions–whether it’s anger, fear, or sadness. might say to yourself, “I can do this” or “If others can learn this, so Take just a minute or two and can I. “That’s a plain and simple release the pent-up emotion in truth. To neutralize your frustra- a physical and constructive way.

you’re likely to meet with resistance in the form of excuses, bad moods, and discouragement. Meet resistance with tenacity and stubbornness, and continue to deal with any emotions that surface. Say to yourself, “I can do this. I’ll feel better when I handle this.” Say it over and over until it’s set in your mind. Any time you feel discouraged or are tempted to procrastinate, refocus on the goal. 10. Focus on the upside.

Getting through a daunting task is incredibly satisfying. Praise each little step along the way. Remind yourself at every step that you’ll feel incredibly virtuous when you get the task off your plate once and for all. Accomplishing what you’re avoiding will simplify your work life. You’ll feel more energetic. You’ll sleep better at night. _____________ Jude Bijou, MA, MFT, is a respected psychotherapist, professional educator, and workshop leader. Toxic Relationships By F u n ke Og u n t u g a

A

toxic relationship can ruin you and really cause you to have an extremely low self esteem. Truthfully, I’ve had my share of toxic relationships, or at least what I thought was toxic. Is it fair to say you have too? My guess is that we’ve all endured the company of people who were not shooting for our highest good. As for me, the relationships that were the most debilitating and unhealthy gave me the feeling that I wasn’t taking care of myself spiritually, mentally, or physically like I should. I was feeling less than myself, like I was compromising my life goals with each second I stayed around those people. Mind you, these were both friendships and romantic relationships. I call these relationships toxic because my real self withered away into someone I didn’t recognize—denying all that was natural for me. The label “toxic” means something that drains life and energy. Before I knew it, I was weak and feeble, subject to the whim of the person to whom I’d given my power. I was guilty of it: hanging around those people too long in an effort to do what was supposedly right by societal standards—fighting to stay in a relationship instead of giving up “too soon.” Little did I know that my desire to be agreeable and accepted was suffocating what was right for me. Why did I have to sacrifice my happiness for what society say is right? I was living stifled in self-judgment and fear, and I’m sure society couldn’t have cared less! While some difficult relationships can open our eyes to new perspectives and expand our awareness, some obviously shut us in and hinder our development. Our intuition will alert us one way or the other. It tells us, change and growth should feel good! It’s important to know when you’re in a toxic

relationship so you can choose something better for yourself. Here are my few pointers •It seems like you can’t do anything right. The other person constantly puts you down as not good enough. They mock your personality, and you feel ashamed most of the time. You only feel pardoned when you take on the traits of the person doing the condemning or judging. •Everything is about them and never about you. You have feelings too, but the other person won’t hear them. You’re unable to have a two-sided conversation where your opinion is heard, considered and respected. Instead of acknowledging your feelings, they battle with you until they get the last word. •Lots of Hostility Is your relationship filled with hostility? Is it something that is constantly flowing between you and your partner? This is one of the top warning signs of a toxic relationship. There shouldn’t be hostility in a relationship, there should be something fun and a relationship should be something that you enjoy being in, not something you dread. •Dirty Fighting Is there constant name calling? Constant insults? Is the past constantly being thrown up? That’s all dirty fighting and it isn’t something that should ever be in a relationship. If you are with someone and you love them, you need to discuss things, not scream at each other and be ugly to each other. •Criticism Is there a constant snide criticism that seems to always be in your relationship? That isn’t right! There is a time and place for criticism and it shouldn’t be in your relationship. Remember, the person that you love is someone that you should accept too, the good and bad. If you have

an issue with your partner, talk about it! •Avoiding Problems Do you constantly avoid the problems that rise up in your relationship? Do you just put them off and don’t bring them up again until you are fighting about them? That’s a pattern and one that isn’t healthy and that you shouldn’t keep up. You should attempt to work out all of your problems as they come up. This is where the discussion piece should come in! •You Aren’t Yourself Do you change your opinions and constantly switch up how you feel when your partner does? That isn’t being you! You need to be your own person, even if you are in a relationship. Don’t ever lose that. Never, ever change your opinion for anyone! If your partner can’t accept you for you, why are you in a relationship with them at all? •Your Family Doesn’t like Your Relationship Does your family see how you and your partner treat each other? Do they like the relationship that you have built together? Do they constantly tell you that you can do better and that you should be able to do better? Well, that’s a warning sign! Your family should like your relationship, how your partner treats you and how you treat your partner. There should be some kind of mutual respect there. •Lots of Guilt Trips Finally, as far as the guilt trips, do you have a ton of them in your relationship? That could be one of the major warning signs that you and your partner are in a toxic relationship. I know it’s hard to believe, but you shouldn’t ever have to feel guilty in a relationship.

EMHealth

ExquisiteYOU Hi Guys, I have been practicing as a Medical Practitioner for over 8 years and there are presenting complaints peculiar to Nigerian patients that I have seen over the years and I am hoping to change them by sharing them with you. Doctors are completely amiss when they hear their patients say the following when patients come for a consultation: DR julz

Top 10 wrong ways to present health complaints to your doctor: 1. DOCTOR, I HAVE MALARIA. If you haven’t confirmed your diagnosis through a blood test please tell the doctor how you are feeling and leave the diagnosing to the doctor. 2. DOCTOR, I HAVE TYPHIOD. Please note that a positive WIDAL test is not conclusive. It only suggests that there might be an increase in the trait of the infection, salmonella to be specific. A stool microscopy, culture and sensitivity is more specify in diagnosis typhoid infection. Again tell the doctor how you feel, “I have persistent headaches or night fever”. Leave the diagnosing to the specialist. 3. DOCTOR I NEED ANTIBIOTICS. If you need to get drugs, you might as well visit the pharmacy. Seeing your doctor means you have symptoms to complain about and the doctor will prescribe drugs for you based on the result of your investigation if any has been done. 4.DOCTOR, I JUST TOOK SOME HERBAL MEDICATION WILL IT REACT WITH THE DRUGS YOU ARE GIVING ME?” Medical doctors have no knowledge of the interaction of herbal concoctions with pharmaceutical drugs. Common, seriously? If you want to use western medication abstain for mixing the treatment with other herbal treatments because we do not know the interaction. We do respect that some patients have some preferences but to be safe, try to be loyal or true to your treatment. Don’t mix. The interactions might be fatal. 5. DOCTOR, CAN I HAVE THE DRUG YOU PRESCRIBED FOR ME LAST WEEK FOR MY FRIEND? HE HAS SIMILAR SYMPTOMS. You cannot see a doctor on someone else’s behalf. Advise your friend to see her physician themselves. Any doctor that prescribes a medication over to the phone to a patient he has never met is practising unethical medicine. You can never fully evaluate a patient over the phone. Full examination involves history taking and a EXQUISITE MAGAZINE

|

22

physical examination. The worst part is when people ask for prescription for their infants over the phone. Paediatric medication is sensitive to the weight of the child. Never indulge in this practice, I beg you. 6.DOCTOR I HAVE A URINARY TRACT INFECTION; I NEED TO TREAT IT BEFORE MY PARTNER THINKS I AM CHEATING. Except there is a hidden agenda or there is a history of infidelity, the patient cannot stigmatise a patient with a Urinary tract infection as being synonymous with Sexually transmitted infection. I have seen relationships end because of urinary tract infections. Some of these complaints or symptoms cold be a simple case of Vaginiatis or candidiasis and might not even be a urinary tract infection so please leave the diagnosing to the physician. Usually a urinary test or a high vaginal swab test will confirm the diagnosis. 7.I HAVE JEDIJEDI. Jedijedi is a symptom that a tribe called “YORUBAS” in the western part of Nigeria relate to excruciating pains at the lower back associated with eating foods that contain excessive sugar. Now it means different things too different patients. Some refer to it as haemorrhoids. So my advice will be to describe the symptoms you are having and do not use local names for your symptoms. It could be misleading. 8. DOCTOR, I HAVE A COMPLAIN BUT I CAN’T TELL YOU BECAUSE YOU ARE A WOMAN. Believe me when I say we have seen it all and nothing will faze us when it comes to health complains. I believe a Medical Practitioner should be professional enough to allay the fears of the patient and I also understand that patients have their preference, but you should have known the doctor was female before visiting the clinic. Doctors have seen dead bodies and humans of all shapes and sizes. My advice will be; you have paid for the service, use it.

9.DOCTOR I HAVE TOILET INFECTION. Most of the symptoms like vaginal discharge, vaginal itching, and painful urination could have been as a result of several causative factors. So tying symptoms to the toilet might be misleading. Some patients come with symptoms that are clearly sexually transmitted infections like gonorrhoea and chlamydia infections and blame the toilet. The toilet might be innocent. Let the physician be the judge and state your symptoms instead. You also have wrong wiping practices in women. Always wipe from FRONT to BACK. When a woman wipes herself from back to front, she introduces faecal matter to her urinary opening and vagina, exposing them to infection so the technique matters. 10.DOCTOR, I AM WELL/ DOCTOR I AM FEELING VERY STRONG TODAY. Then why are you in the clinic? Much respect to my Christian brothers and sisters who wish not to identify with negative comments but it is quite confusing when you visit your doctor and you are now looking for conflicting adjectives to describe your condition. Doctors are not psychic so we can only help you if you describe the way you feel in clear detail. Save us the trouble of guessing symptoms. We are already doing that with the infants and toddlers. Biko (please) help us help you. Winks. Share my posts, and like my facebook wall. Couples sleeping in same room To be or not to be? by L a d e o j o

T

It’s the season of Relocation. Yes, people are moving from rented apartments to their Own Houses. I don’t know how and when it started, but Many People who are FORTUNATE to have Completed Building their own PROPERTIES prefer to move into these new Houses during Festive Season. And so, you find plenty of relocation to their new OUTSKIRTS HOME during Easter, CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR SEASON.

he joy of escaping the ’jab’ of caretakers and landlords usually supersedes the ‘awful’ feeling that accompanies any form of change. However, that is not the thrust of today’s story. Today, it’s about my friend (Mrs. B), whose husband did everything to ensure they move into their new home by Easter but due to unforeseen circumstances, have to delay a bit longer. Mrs. B claims not to have known about the details of the plan, or what the structure would look like until now that they have reached the “almost the finishing” stage. According to her, she and her husband visited the site one day and while showing her round, the husband said: “this is my room while the one opposite is your own; the other two belongs to the children and visitors’ room. That was the first time she got to know that she would not be sharing the same room with her husband in their new home. Mind you, they are coming from a room and parlour setting. The displeased mother of three expressed her disapproval over the arrangement, but her husband insists that is how it is going to be. An argument ensued and this degenerated to a heated argument with the couple not talking to each other for a few days. It took one of the Mr. B’s friend to persuade

Mrs. B to accept the situation so it doesn’t degenerate further. Many questions are still left hanging as far as Mrs. B is concerned. Questions like: Why would her husband insist on living in separate rooms even after 17 years in marriage? Why would any husband and wife sleep in different rooms, even when her own parents who have been married for close to 55 years still live and sleep in the same room? Is it ego on the part of the man or insensitivity on the part of the wife? There are numerous reasons that have been put forward why couples would prefer to have separate rooms. On the man’s side, they simply need their privacy! Some can simply not stand their wife scatter her personal belongings in every part of the room, while others would simply say that it is simply the best thing to avoid regular misunderstanding over misplacement of their own belongings. On the part of the women, those for the notion (I must say they are few anyway) say they need their room so they can have enough space for their bags, shoes and clothes! While the various reasons may sound reasonable, certain questions are still left unanswered in the minds of those of us who don’t see a reason for it. Some people have argued that those who do it do

so for other reasons and that it doesn’t mean they love themselves less. For me, where is the place of “leaving and cleaving” as recommended by the Holy book? What happens to the vow “two shall become one”? So, when the man “is on heat”, what happens? He sneaks into her room, does the job, puts his boxers back on and returns to his own room? What happens to after-romance? Or is there any offence in wanting to get a warm wrap around after a good dose of s**? The bottom line is, I cannot even sleep on separate beds in the same room, talk more of different rooms. Abi? What God has joined together, should pikin, bed, room, money or even anything put asunder? Call me old school, but simply put, I don’t like it. My late mom shared her room with her husband for the 26 years they were married before she left for the great beyond. For my siblings and I, while growing up, each time you did any wrong doing, the fear of what the outcome of mummy’s discussion with daddy, in their room was, was the beginning of wisdom. I still stand by it that sleeping in separate rooms as a couple does not make sense. Readers, what’s your take? Write us and let’s know your opinion. A fitness vacation By P o n l é Dek a l u -T h o m a s

I

always look forward to the workouts I do when I travel, I get a whole new flow of energy from the people I meet at gyms and events. I find that being around people with common interests not only feels awesome but renews my passion for fitness and exercise.

I’m always open to new things, being that fitness is constantly evolving, I get excited and look forward to trying a variety of workouts and exercises, a little out of my fitness element. Within the first week of my vacation, I’ve done the Spartan bootcamp, a group CrossFit class and run/hike 5.5 mile trail on a very rainy, cold day. I have to tell you that really tested me. I’ll be honest, I did indulge a little on the foods that do not fall into the categories of healthy eating, but knowing that those kinds of foods are not suppose to be what you eat on a daily basis and not over doing it, is what helps you maintain your will power. As the Latin saying goes, “Temet Nosce”(Thine own self thou must know). Fitness has no limitations, the sky is not the limit when it comes to fitness, there are footprints on the moon. Despite being on vacation and feeling like you are taking a break from pretty much everything including your daily healthy regimen, you can still stay active and cautious, especially when it comes to your diet. You can eat good, gourmet healthy food, drink enough and below intoxication and keep your energy level up by getting involved in activities that keeps you moving. The plus side of this is you are able to keep that creeping body fat down. I’ve got friends up and down the U.S East Coast, but the group of friends that fascinate me and love hanging out with the most are the ones that live in New York City. Every few months when I visit, they always look better than they did my last visit. What I find incredible about these groups of friends is that they party, eat and live life to the fullest. They party every day, eat crap and drink a lot and are always doing something mind blowing, exciting and crazy. Now despite this lifestyle, none of them are overweight or unhealthy looking, none of them own a car or any form of transportation, everyone is armed with a smart phone, a gym membership and a metro card. So if you want to get somewhere, you are going to have to get your butt there your damn self. I always enjoy jumping into the flow of the city. Now when I’m in my Yankee home state of Virginia, you have to drive everywhere. Things are a little more spread out and It’s not very convenient nor is there a reliably transportation system. The level of activity drops drastically compared to The Big Apple. The fitness culture is more laid back in Virginia, so I do a lot of jogging and go to the gym everyday and I even sleep for up to eight hours because it’s very quiet. Being on vacation doesn’t necessarily mean you should abandon your health, in fact it’s the only thing that shouldn’t be. Engage Ur Core!!! For: BodyByPonzFitness

FiveStarwoman

Let go and find yourself.

I had one of those rare ‘aha’ moments this weekend as I spent a day at a business women’s mentoring event. The session started with the facilitator asking us to say something interesting about ourselves, I sat in the room and listened as several ladies came out and made self-depreciating remarks about themselves... A few years ago I would have done exactly the same thing and thought it was okay.

I searched my heart and wondered where did all this come from? Who taught us women not to believe in ourselves or see much value in us? As I contemplated this, I reminisced about my growing up years......

But if you have not, I would like to ask you a few questions:

1. Who are you: Not what the society, your family or your friends says you should be? Who are you really and truly? Search you heart, break the conditioning, go to the deepest parts and answer the question; who are you?

2. Why are you here: There must be more to life than turning the cog wheel of waking up in the morning, I remember the day I going to work, getting back, watching television and broke the plate in the going to bed. Why are you on the earth? There is kitchen, my dear mum a purpose for everything, even the little ant and the pounced on me and told me how if I continued like mosquito has a purpose! So there must be a reason this, I would never make a good wife. I think back to why God brought you to the earth space. Do you myself smiling; what did a 9 year old girl know about know the reason? Find it! When you do and have a what it took to be a good wife? clearer sense of purpose, your self-confidence and sense of self-worth would improve. But this was the conditioning of many young girls in our traditional African setting. You had to learn to 3. Email me too crunchy, it was just right. The deep fried on; grubtalkwithtoyin@gmail.com (give us your name and chicken and cheese just went hand in hand as I your subscription code) munched on; the side dishes were amazing too. The Spicy Tequila prawn with the Mexican rice sent me to another food heaven on its own, in fact, I have decided to camp a tent next to the restaurant so I would eat all the mouth watering dishes they have there. The sauce that came with the Tequila prawns was soooooooo nice (it is not a typo, if I could add more o’s I will). That day, there was a party in my mouth as everything tasted awesome. I have not even touched on the cocktails, trust me people, this place is the business and they don’t joke. They have fifteen different flavours of cocktails and on my visit, we had two; the Wahalarita and Mangorita. Please if you no get liver, lol, do not attempt the wahalarita o, it is mixed with over five different cocktails and is not meant for the faint hearted like me.

I have been reading about this new restaurant called; 355 Restaurant and Lounge. It has been described as a feel of New York City in Lagos because the décor captures popular locations in New York City. They serve a combination of Mexican and Continental dishes, so I decided not to be told about it but check it out myself.

I

contacted them and arranged an eating meeting, lol. Before the appointment, my friend informs me that her birthday dinner is going to be at 355 Restaurant and Lounge. I was like this is perfect; I can catch them unawares to see how they really are before the review. I got there Friday night and boy, I wasn’t ready for the amount of fun I had. Right from the door, the waitresses were all smiles and welcoming, saying; hope you are ready for an amazing night. Long story short, Friday night was amazing. They had like three birthdays going on at the same time and everyone got equal attention, drinks and cocktails were coming in and in different colours, everything working like clockwork even with the busy crowd, Dj playing the latest jams making people dance on their seats. My friends and I were just screaming; best birthday dinner ever, lol. When reviewing a restaurant, I prefer going in when the restaurant is just opening for the day so we do not disturb customers with picture taking, recording and so on. As earlier described, their staff were still all smiles with welcoming behaviour. By the recommendation of the manager; Joy, my lunch date and I had the (as seen in the pictures); Flautas (it is a tortilla wrap which includes fillings such as deep fried chicken with

eslie’s Loveaffair with Music

Leslie Kasumba is of Ugandan Origin where as we all know education is a pretty big deal there. She graduated with a BA in Dramatic Arts. The degree included courses she wasn’t too excited about. She did extra courses outside her degree, some of which were taking extra Jazz and Piano lessons. She also moved on to another degree in Business of music. “I know it seems like a lot, but nation of everything for me it was my reality for a number of reathat I love - music, Africa, Dreaming; sons” she tells EM.

L

eslie comes from a family of academics, “One of my sister’s works with the African Union, my brother is a Chemical Engineer and my other sister is a Pharmacist. They are pretty accomplished. Oddly enough I used to be the “family academic” then one day it just changed and I wanted to join the creative field, much to my dad’s despair”. Leslie who is driven and passionate about what she does started working at the end of her first year at University on a popular commercial radio station, she also worked as a magazine editor for a commercial youth magazine. Went into TV doing a pan African hip-hop show on Channel O and also was doing presentations to the UN through UN Habitat, where she travelled to Spain, Canada and Norway on African Music and the Millennium Development goals. “Come to think of it, those years in my life prepared me for where I am now. While I was just trying to live my dream and ensure that I made my Dad proud, because he raised us alone after my mom passed, God was actually preparing me for my future. He always has a plan and this has worked well in my current position, because I literally am 100% corporate and 100% creative and entertainment. So I think it’s definitely true everything you do is preparation for where God is taking you…” Q and A on Her journey to Channel O Leslie landed a TV show and was often called on to be a voice for young people to bridge the gap with music and all the different changes in music. She did a few shows on BBC WorldHave Your Say. “Music is all I have ever loved and so eventually all those interesting twists and turns and a whole lot of Grace and Favour from God, I landed my dream job which is a combi-

seeing people’s Dreams come to pass, TV and doing presentations and being a creative.” As the head of channel O, her job is pretty dynamic. So on one hand it’s a lot of admin and a proper 9-5 job, so that includes, contracts, payments, briefing shows, scripting, millions of meetings, production etc. Then she manages on air talent across the continent, then the team around the continent. Channel O is part of Africa Magic – so all the major shows- AMVCA, she sits in on those and handles the music aspect, Big Brother Africa too. She is part of the final selection panel as well as the music aspect of that; with Supersport they also find ways to do collaborative music projects. “ Directing the channel vision is the main one and the direction we take. Foreseeing trends and coming up with show ideas. I love this a lot. I do the odd presentation and talks on African music for the channel, then mostly managing artist relationships which is a large part of my job too and I love that… Managing relationships with different radio partners/ key stake holders around the continent too. Working on the Channel O Awards, again one of my favourites.” On how they have been able to fuse all the different music from the different parts of Africa together to create great content for viewers “I actually thought about this a lot and thought I had a scientific answer, but really I don’t. Essentially music is like instinctive- just a knowing. Also music is very organic and it changes and goes through phases and metamorphoses almost without warning. Perhaps because at its best its created by people who tell their story through the slang used or beats or whatever that represents their own world view. So its never stagnant. So you just have to watch people and how they interact with music really. These days you don’t even have to leave your home social media has made this sort of research so easy. Artists drop their music using different plat-

forms online first before anywhere else because that’s where they get the most honest responses. And people who consume music give the most honest responses on social media, so this is often a strong indicator. On other levels we have partnerships continentally through the multichoice offices and through our VJ’s and Bassment DJ’s, who pretty much let us know what is big in their region. We have key radio partners and then also the fact that we are part of Africa’s biggest brand Africa Magic and the biggest show in Africa Big Brother Africa, we also get a lot of insight through this. But for me, I think the ability to interact with people from different parts on a social level is a huge driver, and I did grow up in such a way that I had friends from all parts of the continent. Even to date most of my friends are from different countries in Africa, so that also adds. But if you are passionate about something you will automatically get to know more about it without being asked.” About the channel o awards “The idea around the awards is to really celebrate the biggest stars in African music for that particular year. The nominee lists are drawn up in the following way. If your video was scheduled on the channel from the 1st July 201330th June 2014 if we give a year cycle example. These videos all automatically qualify. Lists are sent to the continental DJ’s and radio people. No one knows who is part of the committee and they basically view the videos and vote for their favourite based on the country response, video quality and popularity. Then we get the votes back and tally up the votes and the nominee list is determined. So often there may be an upset, and its because firstly the African music video industry and the African music industry has grown not only in terms of quality and artists but also in terms of audiences and markets so artists now compete continentally. So a song and video may be huge in a region but then outside of there no-one knows it. Or people catch on later…It’s a balancing act, but we make it fair. Then votes are gathered through the voting public and that’s who takes the top prize. We aim to create an evening where the biggest stars in Africa can hang out with their peers, be

celebrated by the African audience and just celebrate really. 2013 marked our 10 year anniversary…” Music has been described as a spiritual form of communication, what’s your take on that? “I definitely believe this to be true. Reason being that music has the ability to alter your mood dramatically, in ways that we cannot explain. Music can also remind you of a feeling you had before- it connects directly to your spirit. I don’t think anyone can deny this regardless of your spiritual or religious beliefs or even lack thereof. On a practical level, how is it even possible that people who can’t agree on anything based on race, religious background can all like one artist’s music? That’s something spiritual that no one can explain. Am I saying that all the spiritual experiences in all music are good- that’s not my place to judge. But I will say when there is a connection beyond explanation, that’s certainly spiritual.” Growth of music in Africa? “The growth has been so fast its exciting. I feel we are sitting in the golden era of African music. Right now it’s hard to keep up with the amount of international collaborations, tours, endorsements, artists and music videos. Internationally any radio station worth their ‘cred’ needs to do something “ African” in order to be cool. The cooperate investment in music artists and brands is incredible, and the market share that African artists have only via platforms like Itunes, when you see the amount of youtube views, and just the shows that get filled… Its incredible. Sometimes when you are in the middle of something just working, you don’t realize that you are actually part of a bigger puzzle. Every artist, radio station, music industry stake holder is part of making African music the new capital of Urban music. I think we will see this more and more. The world is over ready for African music and the artists are confident and know what they have and Africans love the sound. So we are exporting to the world and across Africa on our terms.”

Hiphop was also the way that I got accepted or gained access into South Africa as a foreign National. Music has opened up my world literally, I have travelled to around 18 countries in my life and maybe 12 of those were/ are because of music. My love and passion for Africa and people and young African dreamers has intensified because of music. Music has allowed me to meet some of my favourite stars, it’s shaped my career and life and brought me before great men literally, it’s brought me to this incredible job. It’s the tool that God has used to bless my life and I am so thankful…” Challenges and success since joining Channel O “ Well I think that being the first pan African music channel is a challenge, because how do you recreate a brand so that it doesn’t lose its essence yet caters to the new market? And when Channel O started there wasn’t much competition – and I am not even talking about other music channels, I mean mediums like Youtube or blogs. If you think about it you can very easily create your own music channel by sitting online and selecting the videos that you want. The world is a whole different ball game. Add to that every music channel is also competing with an actual artist, because big artists have their own youtube channels the more views they get, the more income they are able to generate. So in reality unless you are Beyonce and you are premiering your video on American Idol, by the time any TV Network gets “ an exclusive” its not that anymore as its been shown online for the most part. We have our challenges but we have created ways to manage and work with EXQUISITE MAGAZINE

them by creating content and playlists, so we have various shows Listening Room, Speakerboxx, Volt, Video Wars, Bassment, Intr-O-ducing, Africa Dreaming, Superfan, Artist Cam to mention a few .” Advice for people who would love a career in music. “Only do it if you know without a shadow of a doubt that this is what you are meant to be doing, don’t do it because it looks fun and glamorous, because really it’s the hardest business to be in, because unlike jobs like accounting or banking when someone criticizes you its very hard to not take it personal. And most of the music success stories you see or hear, people often forget that the road to the top is very hard and if you aren’t in it for the right reasons it will destroy you. Go in mentally prepared, know what you want- don’t try be the next so and so, be the next you, because people are always looking for something fresh. And when a trend dies down only the originator of the genre actually survives. If you do happen to make it – which I believe is so possible, I am a believer that dreams do come true. Remember to remain humble, keep your head on right its really hard, but its so necessary. Make sure there are always people around you who care enough to tell you the truth. Not people around you that will lie so they can remain in your circles.” Who do you think are the top women in music in Africa? “I wanted to do the fair thing and mention all the different women in the industry, because I feel that there are so many talented female artists. In the African music industry, from Seyi Shay to Chidinma, STL to Lira, Efya and so forth. But the one woman I believe is a household name in Africa is without a doubt is Tiwa Savage. She just is that package, for young girls

she is a role model, or the sort of girl you feel can be your best friend. For guys she is the girl you wish you could introduce to your mom. She is a multiple brand ambassador, gets booked with her male counterparts, acting, tv hosting, she enjoys radio play around the continent and has managed to do what people said couldn’t be done as a woman in african music and that is be one of the key drivers in popular culture. Best of all it’s been years in the making she doesn’t have one of those “I woke up like this” stories, Tiwa had her highs and lows and highs again. But she just keeps on rising” Facts about Leslie Personal style is… Depending how I feel, but it’s always a classic standard with a bit of something current. I am a sneaker girl to be honest that’s my hip-hop side. Lol, love bright colours and all. But also love heels and dressing up too. So it changes as I am pretty eclectic. Favorite song…This changes like allll the time, because I love music so much. Its hard to say Favourite food… Not to be a traditionalist, but Chapatti and Matooke… Lol I love Ugandan food like seriously. Favourite magazine……….. Exquisite Magazine! Style crush Definitely Sarah Jakes, Kourtney Kardashian and Lala Anthony, lol I wish I had their dress sense, its effortless. They all just know what works with them. They wear the clothes, the clothes don’t wear them, Favourite colour …I love bright colours and my favourites change fairly often but I love pink, yellow, turquoise etc.I just love colour Dream Holiday … Serengeti in Tanzania, I love the wildlife so somewhere there to be honest far away from all I do…my life is pretty much a party and travel and so when I get to just be in peace no phones nature etc…that is awesome Best Hangout… well my work requires me to be social so I do love intimate moments with close friends and family to be honest. Especially good girl time, I am a girly girl so that’s always fun.. What’s on your playlist In terms of African music- I have to admit its like 85% Naija without a doubt, its even hard to mention one artist because there is so much incredible music coming out of Nigeria at the moment. Internationally – states wise, I definitely love my hip-hop

• Waje is a singer whose vocal range covers three octaves, she was discovered singing in church. The lady behind the remake of P-Square’s “Omoge Mi” and the female voice in the duo’s 2008 hit track “Do Me”, Banky W “Thief my Kele”, M.I “One Naira. • Chidinma - The striking thing about Chidinma’s s*x appeal is that it doesn’t fit into the stereotypical idea of what an average Nigerian man conceives as sexy. The petite MTN Project Fame singer possesses a cute face and smoldering look that has captivated many of her male admirers. A lot of emphasis is placed on ‘flesh’ in these parts but Chidinma has been able to challenge this notion and has proven that small can be sexy too. She also has a smile that can clear up a cloudy day. • Zaina – The upcoming singer signed to Darey’s Soul Muzik is an ebony bombshell with captivating eyes. She has a girl-next door appeal to her but still has the va-va-voom factor. • Niyola - The EME singer is making a statement that she still has it music wise and body wise. Niyola hasn’t changed much over the years- dark and slim with a soft voice that seems softer than butter. She looks so gentle and as if she doesn’t sweat. The little scar over her left eye adds a sense of mystery to her and her ridiculously flat tummy makes her look like a hot teenage • Muna - Well of course, Muna has to be on

this list. While the former beauty queen hasn’t had a lot of success in her recording career, she still packs a lot of punch when she walks down the red carpet. The ex-MBGN beauty isn’t one sided as she can go full lady or full tom boy and still be sexy. On some days she has this ‘goddess’ vibe about her. Her light skin (natural) is another plus to her which undoubtedly attracts a lot of male admirers to her doorstep. • Retta - The soft-spoken singer has the same sensual appeal within the Rihanna range. She looks innocent, even angelic while rocking a hot as hell body. For guys who like their women with piercings and tattoos then Retta is your spec. Don’t let her cute face fool you, she has a wild side- watch May D’s ‘Soundtrack’ video. • Yemi Alade - The Effyzzie mistress is brown sugar personified. While the former Peak talent show winner has been turning heads at events for a while, her sexiness went nuclear when she released her video ‘Ghen Ghen Love’. With just the right proportion of a little bit of this and a little bit of that Yemi Alade is like a Marvel comic female super-hero with the perfect body. With a high amount of energy to rock her hotness, Yemi Alade is one of the sexiest female artistes in the game now. 4) Victoria Kimani - All the way from Nairobi, Kenya comes Ms. Victoria Kimani. The singer/rapper is a dark skin and colorful entertainer who oozes s*x appeal. She is not one to go conservative

with her dress sense as she flaunts what she has. Signed to Chocolate City Kenya, Victoria Kimani is showing a lot of Nigerian chicks in the game that Kenyan babes are hot too. • Emma Nyra - Remember that hot babe who was seductively singing ‘my waist, my waist, all you want is my waist’ in Iyanya’s ‘Ur Waist’? Yeah that babe is Emma Nyra, first lady of Made Men Music Group. The pretty lady with the pretty smile isn’t scared to flaunt her waist or any of her goodies on TV. Her sexy energy will over your TV screen when any of her videos pop up. • Tiwa Savage - The first lady of Mavin Records is a chocolate wonder with legs that drip of caramel. Her soft spoken voice can melt the hardest stone and her eyes sparkle in the dark. Sorry guys she is engaged. You can only drool from a distance. • Lola Rae - This is another representative of team light skin. The half-Nigerian, half British singer piqued our interest as Ice Prince Zamani’s love interest in his music video ‘More’. She quickly released her music video ‘Watch My Ting Go’ which had a lot of tongues wagging and guys holding tight to their remote controls. She also has a British accent and most men can’t turn down a beautiful woman with a sweet accent. Victoria Kimani,

The perfect cat eyeliner is ever fashionable, very flattering for most eye shapes and delivers a sultry, mysterious look even when the rest of your makeup remains low key. You can use any color pencil or gel eyeliner (Mac blacktrack) to achieve this look. Here are 5 easy steps to achieving the perfect cat eye. J

Trend Alert –

Winged eyeliner “Cat eyes” BY LOLA OJ

STEP 1

Starting at the middle of you upper lid, begin drawing a line as close to your lashes as possible. This line determines the width of your eyeliner, to create a dramatic look make this line thick, or create a thin line for a more subtle look. Creating a straight line requires a bit of practice. You can either draw a single-stroke line or many short strokes. Starting from the inner corner of your eye and moving towards the line you just drew, draw a fine line.

STEP 2

To create your eyeliner wing, draw a line starting from the last lash outwards. You can now decide the length & angle to your eye liner.

STEP 3

After drawing your wing, draw a line back to your upper lash line. This should create an empty triangle on your upper lid. To make you eyeliner thicker, draw a bigger triangle, ending at the middle part of your lash line. For a more subtle look, draw a small triangle that finishes in your outer corner.

STEP 4

Color in the triangle with your pencil.

STEP 5 Add a pair of faux lashes to your lash line or apply black mascara to complete the look.
