One area of particular success for Dublin City Council has been the enhancements to parks and playgrounds providing safe and fun amenities for local children. Belgrave Square – the widely used playground in Belgrave Square, which was recently totally re-furbished to a very high standard, is greatly enjoyed by families from Rathmines, Ranelagh and surrounding areas. Palmerston Park – the playground in Palmerston Park has also been re-developed. Following consultation with local residents the original plans were modified to the satisfaction of both the Parks Department and the Families enjoy the newly re-furbished playground in Belgrave Square residents. FINE GAEL Long Service Certificate to son of General Risteard Mulcahy Mr Padraig Mulcahy is a son of General Risteard Mulcahy who fought in the 1916 Easter Rising and served as IRA Chief of Staff during the War of Independence. Padraig was presented with a Long Service Certificate in recognition of his life-long active support for the Fine Gael Party by Dr James Reilly TD, Minister for Health in the Mansion House. I was pleased to be involved in organising this event for a much loved and true friend of Fine Gael. KEEP ACTIVE, KEEP HEALTHY! It’s been a great summer to be inspired to keep active with Irish involvement in many sports: • all our Olympians who represented our country so proudly and well at the London 2012 Olympics, especially Katie Taylor who inspired the nation. • the Irish Cricket team who qualified for the 2012 World Cup in Sri Lanka in September • the Irish supporters lifting our spirits at the UEFA European Football Championship in Poland • and of course the 40,000 women who ran the Women’s Mini Marathon in Dublin raising thousands of euro for so many deserving charities

WYNNE PC The Government -

Working to Support Workers

This is a difficult time I know for many people. There’s much uncertainty as to what the future holds. Some people are facing a reduction of salary, actual or threatened jobs loss and concerns about what might happen to social welfare payments. However, the Government is working to support workers. They have introduced a range of welcome measures to protect low earners, the most vulnerable and to support job creation. These include: • • •

restoring the minimum wage taking 330,000 low earners out of the tax net by exempting them from the Universal Social Charge establishing a Manufacturing Development Forum including industry figures to devise a strategy to create 20,000 jobs by 2016

Already Ireland’s economic prospects are improving. Minister for EU Affairs Lucinda Creighton TD has said that, for Ireland during our EU presidency, the key is growth and job creation with the emphasis on trade, investment, services and tourism. It will, she said, be an opportunity to showcase Irish business. On a wet July evening An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny TD unveiled a plaque in Booterstown Avenue. The plaque marks the spot where Kevin O’Higgins the country’s first Minister for Justice in the Cosgrave Government of 1922-1931, and a statesman of immense fortitude - was sadly assassinated in his prime at the tender age of 32 years in July 1927.

Cllr. EDIE WYNNE WASTE COLLECTION The changeover in the collection of waste from Dublin City Council to Greyhound and other providers is still causing a great number of problems for many people. I have dealt with numerous cases where bins have not been collected or not been collected on time. In most cases, we got the matter resolved. However, I am still responding to problems on a regular basis. One of the issues raised with me is that people would like to have access, from Greyhound, to a record of ‘lifts’ as against payments made, and also when further payments are due so that they will not miss any bin collections inadvertently. Another thing to remember is that if you are not happy with your service from Greyhound, that there are other waste service providers in the marketplace that may offer you a more competitive collection service. If you are still having any problems with waste collection, please contact me at 087 2851779 or wynnee@eircom.net.

IN YOUR AREA Rathmines Swan Leisure Centre Going Swimmingly: The Swan Leisure centre has been a great success story for Rathmines. Local people have taken to it “like a duck to water”! It is a prime example of the positive results that can be achieved when the local community and Dublin City Council work in partnership together. The complex is a wonderful tribute to everyone involved. I can personally vouch for the high standard of the swimming pool and the changing rooms and am delighted to recommend it to anyone who feels like a bit of exercise.

Terenure Retail Giants Look to Terenure: Planning applications are being considered for three Retail giants looking to set up business in Terenure. The three in question are Aldi, Lidl and Tesco. The Aldi application (2304/11) relates to the former Charles Nolan premises and permission has been granted for this. The Lidl (2093/12) application relates to the old Sunday World site and it has been appealed to An Bord Pleanala. The Tesco application (2123/12) is for the site of the former Quinlan’s pub and at the time of going to print additional information has been requested. Terenure Village Signs: Terenure got lovely new ‘Terenure Village’ signs during the summer. A lot of thought went into the design of the signs by Terenure Village Network and Dublin City Council. The tree on the signs is a yew tree, reflecting the Irish name of the village – Tír an Iúir. Road Repairs: The re-surfacing of Appian Way, Fortfield Terrace and Fortfield Gardens have been confirmed and the work on some has been completed. I also requested that serious potholes at Belmont Ave., Winton Ave and outside O’Shea’s in Clonskeagh be repaired and an undertaking has been given that all of these will be done. Potholes that are left unattended are dangerous for both motorists and cyclists. Please contact me at 087 2851779 if you are aware of problems in your area. Bloomsday Celebrations: James Joyce was born in Brighton Square in 1882. He was baptised in St Joseph’s Church, Terenure. His mother’s - Mary Murray - home was the Eagle House (now Vaughan’s) in Terenure. This year’s Bloomsday, one hundred and thirty years after his birth, was celebrated in many of the south Dublin urban villages, including Rathgar, Ranelagh, Donnybrook and, of course, Sandymount.

IN YOUR AREA Rathgar - Working Together For the Good of All Bloomsday in Rathgar was very special this year. It was the first major project of the newly formed Rathgar Business Association. Businesses in Rathgar had put together a wide-ranging programme of readings and music, period costumes and some recipes that would have appealed to Leopold Bloom such as fried kidneys, livers and sausages along with strawberries and cream and a glass of burgundy. A most enjoyable day was had by all and I wish the Rathgar Business Association continued success. Meanwhile, the Rathgar Resident’s Association continues to progress a number of issues on behalf of local residents. In support, I facilitated a meeting between the Resident’s Association, Dublin City Council officials and local City Councillors last March. Items raised on the Agenda included: the current traffic island in Rathgar Village; re-furbishment of the

lamp standard on the traffic island; clutter on the footpaths e.g. tables and chairs; the need for planning compliance in Rathgar; the maintenance of Orwell Park and Dodder Park and the proliferation of street poles in Rathgar, as well as Rathmines, Terenure and other areas.

Ranelagh Triangle and the Sandymount Promenade - New Casual Trading Licence Locations The above are two of the locations where Casual Trading Licences are to be granted. At the Ranelagh Triangle a licence will permit the selling of jewellery, foodstuffs and crafts on Saturdays and Sundays from 7am to 6pm and on Sandymount Promenade past the Martello Tower and close to the car park a licence will permit the selling of tea/coffee and light hot and cold snacks from Mon to Sat from 7am to 6pm. Harold’s Cross and Terenure Villages Reunited by Boundary Commission It is 20 years since the urban villages of Harold’s Cross and Terenure were divided along their main streets by a Boundary Commission. I have made submissions to a number of Constituency Boundary Commissions during that time in an effort to reverse the anomaly that was almost unique in Ireland.

For both General and Local Elections the electoral boundary ran down the main street of the villages. Local people have welcomed the re-unification for General Election purposes and are now optimistic that the Local Government Boundaries will also re-unite the main streets of the two villages so that they are served by one
