The owners of Dundrum Town Centre have been refused planning permission to extend the shopping centre, despite getting permission just over five years ago. Dún Laoghaire Rathdown’s Planning Department have turned down an application from developer Joe O’Reilly, whose Chartered Land built the shopping centre. The second phase would have involved building on the old Dundrum shopping centre, which was built in the 1970s. The council blamed “an increased flood risk to surrounding property” for the decision to refuse planning. The shopping centre itself was flooded in 2011, although this was not a factor in the centre being refused planning permission for the expansion. The application by Mr O’Reilly’s Lenridge development company asked for permission to build a large store, 77 smaller shops, nine restaurants, a 96-room hotel, 40 apartments, a medical centre and a 1,900-space car park. A new library was also planned. At the moment, the shopping centre has more than 100 shops, 40-plus restaurants, a cinema and theatre, and 3,400 car park spaces. Opened in 2005, it has an annual footfall of 19 million.
Carrickmines vote could lead to over a thousand new local jobs
• Another Rugby World Cup bid
As part of the County Development Plan discussions, Councillors voted by a margin 24 to 13 to support a motion placed by Neale and his colleague Cllr. Josepha Madigan that allows for the re-designation of Carrickmines Retail Park as a Neighbourhood Centre allowing for 6,000 square metres of retail floor space and leisure facilities. The passing of this motion can allow for the completion of The Park in Carrickmines and for the construction of much needed leisure facilities, LUAS access, retail units and restaurants. Already The Park has received countless expressions of interest from businesses looking to take up opportunities, this is great news for the local area and the wider economy. This vote could lead to over a thousand new jobs.

€61m grant to cut DLR housing list by 20% €61 million will be provided for local authority housing in Dún Laoghaire Rathdown by the Government, this will meet 20% of the authority’s housing need in the form of 681 new homes. This is a significant reduction in the waiting list. It is also estimated that this funding will help to sustain more than 600 jobs in the construction sector.

Another Rugby World Cup bid
Free GP care for over-70s
On foot of the announcement that the IRFU would bid to hold the Men’s Rugby World Cup in 2023. The IRFU has announced that it has submitted a bid to host the Women’s Rugby World Cup in August 2017 at locations in Dublin and Belfast. Irish Rugby intends to host the tournament pool stages at University College Dublin before moving to Belfast for semi-finals and finals at Queen’s University Sport and the newly developed Kingspan Stadium.
The Government has approved a new Bill to provide free GP care for people aged over 70, the Department of Health plans to have a universal GP service for over 70s in the second quarter of this year. This would coincide with the introduction of free GP care for children under 6. There are 36,000 over 70 year-olds living in this country who don’t have either a medical card or GP card. This legislation, once introduced, will be of enormous benefit to these people.

The following local schools have received grants from the Department of Education and Skills to carry out refurbishments under the Summer Works Scheme: St Brigids Girls NS, Cabinteely; Our Lady of the Wayside, NS, Kilternan; SN Naomh Lorcan, Kilmacud; Good Shepherd NS, Churchtown; Our Lady’s Gove, Goatsown; St Tiernan’s CS, Dundrum.

The proposed development consists of six detached houses, 18 semi-detached houses, six terraced houses, 12 townhouses and 12 owndoor ground floor apartments, all situated around a central public space.
As per every year, I am publishing full details of payments received by me as a member of Dún LaoghaireRathdown County Council. The salary payment is liable for income tax, USC, PRSI and a pension contribution even though Councillors do not actually receive a pension. In addition to this, in the latter part of 2014 I received travel expenses to cover the cost of my attendance at three meetings of the South & Eastern Assembly in Waterford as well as meetings of the Committee of the Regions in Brussels.
Dundrum: The Council has put together plans for new housing at Rosemount, Dundrum, following the demolition of the old flats. The funding from this will come from the new social housing plan launched by this government in recent months.
