Penguin Parade E x p e r i e n c e o n e of Au st r a li a’s m o st p o p ul a r at tractions. The Penguin Parade is a nightly spectacle that truly is a natural phenomenon. Each night at sunset you’ll be amazed by Little Penguins returning ashore after a day’s fishing. Over 4,000 of the 32,000 little penguins living in the waters around Phillip Island have their burrows around Summerland Beach. Native to Australia and the smallest of their species at just 33 centimetres, the little penguins leave their burrows about an hour before sunrise and swim up to 100 kilometres each day before returning at dusk. Line the obser vation boardwalks at Phillip Island Nature Park at dusk to see them race up Summerland Beach to their burrows. Get even closer to the action at the Penguins Plus viewing platform with commentar y from a ranger. The elevated Penguin Sky Box is a comfortable and exclusive way to see the penguins while assisting in the ongoing research of the Phillip Island penguins. The park features rugged coastlines, sandy beaches, rock platforms and windswept heathland. In the north, the park features tall forests, ferny gullies, magnificent waterfalls and tranquil lakes. Limestone Coast Created by constant erosion of the limestone cliffs of the mainland beginning 10-20 million years ago, the stormy Southern Ocean and blasting winds gradually eroded the softer limestone, forming caves in the cliffs. 12 Apostles One of the most well-known highlights of the Great Ocean Road is The Twelve Apostles. Situated in the Port Campbell National Park, the massive limestone structures that tower 45 metres above the tempestuous Southern Ocean, leave its visitors awestruck in wonder at their size and beauty. Behind the eight remaining stacks (five have fallen since their discovery) are majestic cliffs, around 70 metres high. Stop and visit the Twelve Apostles Centre before taking the walk to view the amazing Twelve Apostles coastline. The Centre offers insightful cultural heritage stories, shelter and toilets.
11:10 am
Loch Ard Gorge Stand on top of the cliff and you'll be amazed at the sheer size of the cliffs and the narrow opening out to sea at the Loch Ard Gorge. In rough weather the crashing waves put on quite a show.
1:20 pm
The Grotto Step down to this geological formation created when sinkholes in the limestone cliffs met with a receding cliff line. Feel the eeriness of the still, clear water of the Grotto in contrast to the ocean.
2:00 pm
London Bridge Originally a natural archway and tunnel in an offshore rock formation, however, it collapsed in 1990 and became a bridge without a middle.
2:30 pm
The Arch See this natural rock formation formed through erosion, at its best during rough seas when the waves crash in and around the arch. Take in an excellent view back towards the 12 Apostles.
