All party support for prison closure fight JUSTICE Secretary Ken Clarke has been urged to come to Wellingborough to see for himself why the town’s prison should not be closed. The campaign to reverse Mr Clarke’s bombshell announcement – which threatens 600 jobs in the town – is gathering pace across the community. All parties on Wellingborough Council have united to pass a resolution formally rejecting the decision. And they are sending a letter to Justice Secretary supporting a parliamentary debate on the ‘fundamentally flawed’ decision. The resolution read: “This council formally rejects the decision to close HMP Wellingborough by the Secretary of State for Justice. “The prison is most certainly not outdated in comparison to prisons built by the Victorians. The hard work of the staff and management in reducing costs and improving performance should not be thrown away.” “It added: “The Borough Council of Wellingborough is proud of its prison and demands a formal re-evaluation of the position.” Council leader Paul Bell, who agreed the wording of the resolution together with opposition councillor Adam Henley, said: “ “We want the Ministry of Justice to understand exactly how this decision could affect our borough. “The prison is a major employer, with both directlyemployed staff and other suppliers and businesses relying on it, and the closure would obviously have a knock-on effect on our local economy. “The campaign to have this decision given proper consideration and debate is gathering pace and the council is fully in support of that.” ‘Don’t shut our prison’: see page 3.

Good neighbours – by association! > COUNTY PEOPLE living at Corby’s new Priors Hall Park development have shown their community spirit by coming together to form the area’s first Neighbourhood Association. A public meeting at Corby Business Academy was attended by 25 residents and local councillors Rob McKellar and Stan Heggs. The association will be funded by the council and will allow local people a say in the future of the new neighbourhood. Priors Hall, which currently has 126 occupied houses and a town-green, is expected to increase in size to around 5,000 houses in the next five years. Plans are being made to build a new primary school, a combined art gallery and heritage centre and an impressive ‘Amphitheatre’ centrepiece, as well as a local shopping precinct and various playparks and green spaces. It is hoped the new Neigh-
bourhood Association will play a central role in shaping growth and development. Corby councillor for Priors Hall, Rob McKellar, said: “The new Neighbourhood Associa-
tion will add to the fabulous community spirit that is already thriving at Priors Hall Park. It is already a much sought-after place to live and is central to our Borough’s regeneration.”

picture gets closer > COUNTY PLANS to create a six-screen cinema in Corby are set to move a step closer with agreement close on the sale and development of land off George Street. Corby Council and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) are due to approve the next important step in the process, it has been revealed. A report advising the council’s One Corby Policy Committee confirms the HCA is now in a position to enter the development agreements and is asking the local authority to do the same. The report will be discussed by councillors next Tuesday. The former Willows Theatre and Tresham College site has now been cleared ready for regeneration. It is 20 per cent owned by the council and 80 per cent by the HCA. Once the agreement with the preferred bidder, Mulberry Developments, is sealed, it paves the way for the first phase of the Parkland Gateway project to begin. This phase will include a six-screen cinema and food outlets which the council says could be completed as early as the end of next year. Leader of Corby Borough Council, Cllr Tom Beattie, said: “It is fantastic news that this agreement is ready to be signed up to by both parties, which could result in work beginning on site as soon as the turn of the year. “The residents of Corby have been eagerly awaiting their very own cinema and so we are very pleased that things are now moving forward.”

Fight is on over prison closure plan Commons debate as jail campaign grows > WELLINGBOROUGH THE BATTLE to overturn the shock decision to shut Wellingborough prison by the end of the year is heading to the House of Commons. Local MP Peter Bone has secured a debate on the issue, which will take place when Parliament returns after its summer break. Meanwhile, the decision, which threatens 600 local jobs, has been condemned by Labour’s Shadow Justice Minister Jenny Chapman.
She said: “By closing Wellingborough Prison, the Tory-led Government is yet again showing its incompetence in managing our prison estate. “By their own predictions, the Ministry of Justice see prison numbers rising towards 95,000. There’ll be no alternative to squeezing more and more prisoners into less and less space. “We’re worried about the impact this will have on the safety of those working in our prisons and the ability of the system to successfully punish and reform offenders.
“It’s rather puzzling how the Government can square-off their policy of squashing more and more prisoners into less and less space with their boasts about a rehabilitation revolution. It’s difficult not to conclude it’s simply more about words than actions.” The Commons debate is scheduled to take place on September 5. Prisons Minister Crispin Blunt will have to answer Mr Bone’s questions about the closure. Justice Minister Ken Clarke has said the move would save £10million a year. But Mr Bone has described it as a ‘short-term mea-
sure for dubious economic gain’. He said: “It’s closing the wrong prison at the wrong time for the wrong reasons.” And he added: “I shall be doing everything I can to get them to reverse this decision.” Wellingborough councillors have also spoken of their concern over the impact the prison closure will have on the local economy and jobs in the town. Mr Bone has also invited Mr Clarke to visit the jail and he has called for the closure to be delayed until MPs have had a chance to discuss the decision.
Shock result in drugs-screening blitz > COUNTY TRACES of drugs were found on 16 out of 60 people tested at a pub and a nightclub in Corby as part of a major police clampdown. A drugs screening device was used as a condition of entry to the venues. Two men were also caught with Class B drugs on them. One received an £80 penalty
notice and the other was bailed to appear at Corby police station at a future date. Traces of Class A drugs were also found in the ladies’ toilets on both premises. Plain clothes officers also visited six licenced premises in the town and carried out various checks as part of the operation. Bar staff in one of the premises were issued with an £80 penalty
notice for supplying alcohol to a person who was drunk. PC Rod Mackenzie, of Corby Safer Community Team, said: “The police activity was particularly well received by staff and doormen at the venues and we also received a lot of positive feedback from customers. “We like to be proactive in support of our licensed premises in the town and ensure that people don’t
Extension to Cardiac Centre is a boost for hospital’s services > COUNTY KETTERING General Hospital has opened a third catheter laboratory inside its state-of-art Cardiac Centre, to boost its life-saving heart treatment. The move will enable the hospital to speed up treatment processes for emergency and routine patients in its role as Northamptonshire’s hub for 24/7 cardiac care. Since October 2010, the hospital has seen and treated some 700 patients with emergency Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention – where a small frame called a stent is used to keep a blocked artery open. It has also performed 5,800 other routine cardiac procedures, such as angiograms, angioplasty, permanent pacemakers and cardiac defibrillators. Consultant cardiologist Dr Javed Ehtisham, said: “The third lab is a significant extension to cardiac services at Kettering General Hospital and it will help us to improve the quality of care for the increasing number of people who need cardiac. “Improved ways of identifying patients with cardiac problems has resulted in increased demand for services of this kind, which is why we need to expand the service at Kettering. “This will also help us to speed up care for both emergency and nonemergency patients, resulting in a better quality experience.” The first patient to use the new stateof-the-art lab was Alan McClintock, 56, from Corby.
GOOD NEWS: Alan McClintock with consultant cardiologist Dr Javed Ehtisham. Mr McClintock had a heart attack in 2007 – shortly before KGH opened its £4.7million Cardiac Centre – and so he has witnessed the development of the hospital’s facilities first hand from a patient’s point of view. He said: “When I had a heart attack five years ago, Kettering General didn’t do cardiac stents so I had to go to Glenfield Hospital in Leicester. “Recently, I had been suffering from chest pain so on July 4 I had an angiogram at the new laboratory that has just opened inside the Cardiac Centre. “The service was absolutely brilliant. I saw the doctor within 15 minutes and was in the theatre half-an-hour later. “It is very fast and efficient and there is someone with you all the time, so you know exactly what’s happening. It was very new and high-tech and I was very well looked after.” The good news for Mr McClintock is his angiogram procedure showed his stents and heart valves were operating normally. Further tests showed his chest pains were the result of a chest infection, for which he was treated with antibiotics.
take drugs into pubs and clubs. “We are looking to use our police powers to combat drug and alcohol-related crime and disorder more effectively and extensively and we are planning more proactive operations later in the year.” The police operations tied in with an Alcohol Week Of Action in Corby which saw the police working in partnership with Corby Bor-
ough Council and other agencies. Corby council carried out test purchase visits on Thursday to more than ten premises – there were no sales. They also worked with Pubwatch and off-licences to offer advice and guidance around fake ID, proxy sales and drug protocols. Drug wipes were offered to licensees throughout the visits as a request through Pubwatch.

We do like to be Musical future for ‘Beside the Seaside’ > KETTERING A NEW free summer exhibition at Kettering’s awardwinning Manor House Museum will show how we really do like to be beside the seaside. Open until September 1, the summer exhibition will allow visitors to take a trip down memory lane and take a nostalgic look back at the British seaside. Buckets, spades, Punch and Judy, seaside sounds and fashions and an extensive collection of photographs of holidays gone by are all featured. With themes looking at seaside photographs, entertainment, historic swimwear and souvenirs, there is plenty to spark the imagination and get into the summer spirit. Some of the exhibition highlights include examples of knitted swimwear – can you imagine bathing in a heavy, wet, woollen swimsuit? Also on show are a brightly-coloured psychedelic 1960s’ bikini and a rather disturbing means of achieving a bronzed look, in the form of a 1950s’ UV tanning machine! A museum spokesman said: “There is something to keep everyone entertained, children and adults alike, and all can be enjoyed with the guarantee of dry, indoor weather! “Children can enjoy the exhibition’s creative activity worksheets and delving for shells in a sandpit table and there is plenty of scope for older generations to sit and reminisce, enjoying the wealth of objects on display. “A seaside memories display offers the opportunity for people to share their own seaside memories and bring in copies of their own seaside photographs.”
iconic bandstand > CASTLE FIELDS
THE SOUND of music is set to return to Wellingborough’s Castle Fields Park once the £75,000 regeneration of its 99-year-old bandstand is completed later this year. It’s hoped the restoration will be completed by the autumn and the bandstand will then be brought back into use for community events and performances. A steering group, including representatives from the Victoria Centre and Wellingborough Museum, has been set up to work with the council on its future and to put together a programme of events. The bandstand has been closed and shuttered since 2008. Although not a listed building, it is an important heritage feature and local schools, community groups and historical societies have been campaigning for its restoration. Paul Bell, leader of Wellingborough Council, said: “The renovation work will bring the bandstand back to its former glory so it can be enjoyed in the same way it was nearly 100 years ago. “We are hoping to see concerts,

for high-octane motorsport glory. The teenager is one of the UK’s leading Junior Drag Racers and has headed to Bristol, Tennessee, to race in the NHRA Junior Drag Racing League. She has been taking on 800 of her American and Canadian counterparts in the Eastern Conference Finals. Back home, Paige and her eight-year-old sister, Belle, race at Santa Pod and Shakespeare County Raceways. They drive American drag racers, custom-built for them by Half Scale Dragsters Inc. For the trip to Bristol, Half Scale lent Paige a new car. It’s a big challenge for a young girl, but Paige took it all in her stride. Speaking before heading off on her summer racing adventure she said: “I’m excited about going, but not at all nervous. “I did race at Bristol for the first time last year, and managed to win a few rounds, so I know what it will be like.” The Bristol track runs along a
valley floor and is aptly named, Thunder Valley Raceway. The adult version of Paige’s car – aTop Fuel Dragster – exceeds 300 miles per hour and emits a noise measured on the Richter Scale. The juniors only race over an eighth-mile or 220 yards. With its 0-60mph time of around three seconds, Paige’s car regularly tops 80mph at the finish. Paige was competing in three separate races over ten days at Bristol, culminating in the world’s largest Junior Dragster event. Proud dad Andy Wheeler described Paige as “very focused.” He added: “Competing in Bristol is an amazing opportunity for Paige and we’ve had tremendous support from our sponsors, headed by Alamo Rent A Car, who help make this all possible. “In her first full year of competition, Paige won the Junior Dragster trophy at Santa Pod’s FIA European Finals and this season, she’s currently fourth in the UK national championship.”
YOUNG construction apprentice George Rafis is building the foundations for a great career in the industry. The 18-year-old from Wellingborough beat off strong competition to be crowned winner of the Essential Skills category at this year’s National Construction College (NCC) Awards, which took place at the NCC in Birmingham. As well as George, 12 other nominees were commended for their outstanding efforts in 13 categories including flooring, highways maintenance and essential skills. George said: “Being nominated for an award was great – but to actually win one in my category was a real surprise. “It’s a great reward for the work I’ve done and I’d like to thank the training staff at the NCC for the help they have given me and the other apprentices.” Andy Walder, director of the NCC said: “The NCC Awards are a great way to celebrate the achievements of young apprentices in our industry. We are extremely proud of everyone who was nominated or who won an award at this year’s events.”

Protesters bid to halt housing plan > IRCHESTER CAMPAIGNERS opposed to plans to build 124 new homes in Irchester are gearing up for a crucial planning meeting next week. The application will be discussed by Wellingborough councillors at a special meeting on Monday evening and a strong turnout is expected from villagers. The Save Irchester Village group has already handed in a petition signed by more than 2,000 people to the council. And more than 500 objections have also been lodged against the application, by Barwood Developments, on the council’s planning website. The group has also taken its fight to Parliament – handing over the petition to local MP Peter Bone, who has raised the issue at Westminster. Barwood Developments says the construction project would provide badly-needed homes and the scheme would also include a doctor’s surgery and playing fields. The opposition group says a number of villagers will look to speak at the meeting to lodge their concerns over the plan. Chris Stening, chairman of Save Irchester Village, said: “With the new Localism bill now firmly in

‘Be wary of doorstep callers’ CARPETWISE > WELLINGBOROUGH
WELLINGBOROUGH Council is urging residents to be extra vigilant when dealing with contractors who knock at their doors offering home insulation. The warning comes after a number of people reported being visited by a company claiming to be part of the local authority’s scheme offering free cavity wall and loft insulation. The council’s scheme is only offered through supplier Snug Network and installer Energy Care Group. The council says it will never use cold-calling or door-to-door sales teams. The professionally-installed insulation aims to help residents reduce their energy bills, which are now more than £1,300 a year
for the average household. Councillor Peter Morrall, chairman of the council’s community committee, said: “These contractors are calling on people without any warning, claiming to be working on behalf of the council and this is worrying. We do offer a scheme for free insulation but our contractors will never phone or turn up unannounced. We’re not saying that all cold-callers are bogus, but we don’t want people to commit to something that they mistakenly believe to be directly associated with Wellingborough Council. “With any doorstep callers, we would advise people to check ID and look for company logos, headed paper, business cards and uniforms to satisfy themselves the contractor is genuine.
Any legitimate contractor will be more than happy to arrange to call back later, giving people time to do a quick background check by phoning the company or the council. “We know we’ve had a number of scams operating recently in the borough so we’d ask people to take extra care, not only with doorstep callers but also with too-good-to-be-true deals that appear through the post, over email or by phone. If anyone suspects a scam, we’d ask that they let us know, as it’s only by sharing the information and warning people that the issue can be stopped.” For more information about the free cavity wall and loft insulation provided by the council, or to report a suspected scam, call: 01933 229 777.

Fashioning a bright future > COUNTY THE new owner of Corby’s Aquascutum clothing factory has spoken of his commitment to develop a strong manufacturing operation in the town. Roger Gawn, chairman of Swaine Adeney Brigg, told the Extra that in future many of its luxury cloths and goods will be made in Corby. His firm has reopened the former Aquascutum factory, which closed with the loss of 115 jobs. A workforce of around 25 former Aquascutum staff have been recruited and started back at the factory this week. They will be concentrating on finishing trench coats which remain in the factory for Chinese firm YGM Trading - which

Jobs hopes as new owner moves into Aquascutum plant bought the brand from administrators earlier this year. Mr Gawn told the Extra he hoped that there would be further work from YGM for his new Corby operation. And he revealed that the operation would also be making highend goods for Swaine Adeney Brigg, which is based in Norfolk. Speaking of his commitment to create a “core manufacturing operation” in Corby he said it would be based in the former Aquascutum factory or at another site in the town. Swaine Adeney Brigg has made luxury clothes, umbrellas, and
equestrian and leather goods since 1750 and has held a royal warrant since 1893. It also made the hat for the Indiana Jones films for director Steven Spielberg. Mr Gawn said: “We are finishing off the work for YGM; we have a licence to occupy the factory and we are negotiating with the landlord to see whether we can establish a permanent base. “We are very pleased to have this opportunity to create a very good manufacturing operation. We are recruiting some very skilled workers and believe there is potentially a very good future for us here.”

Sophie Mallard, 21, of Elizabeth Way, didn’t declare that she had a paid job while claiming income support, housing benefit and council tax benefit. After receiving informa-
tion that she had been working, Wellingborough Council launched a joint investigation with the Department for Work and Pensions and discovered she carried out paid agency work between October 2010 and February 2011. Mallard pleaded guilty to two offences when she appeared before Northampton Magistrates. She admitted failing to declare work to obtain income support

IPCC review Leanne Mape’s claims after appeal from her Barrister AN APPEAL has been lodged with the Independent Police Complaints Commission that the case of Leanne Mape, who claims she was sexually abused by a number of Asian and white men as a young girl, not be investigated. The appeal was mounted after the Standards Department of Northamptonshire Police initially rejected that the circumstances surrounding police investigations over the last 15 years be looked into, on grounds that the complaint was out of time and applied to the IPCC for dispensation. Following the police request for dispensation not to take the matter further, Leanne’s representatives have appealed to the IPCC on the grounds that she was a minor at the alleged initial failings of the police and did not have constructive knowledge of her causes for complaint until many years later. Leanne, now 27 and who lives in Corby, alleges that between the ages of 11 and 15 she was the victim of systematic sexual abuse. Despite a complaint being made when Leanne was15 by her mother and subsequently being interviewed on video by police and medically examined, she believes she has been let down by the police and social services. A medical report at the time by a doctor at Kettering General Hospital onfirms “a history of systematic sexual abuse by a number of individuals over two to three years.” She believes that officers failed to investigate her case fully over a number of years and this has deprived her of justice. A case worker at the IPCC will now look at the case file and then make a decision. Last night a police spokesperson said: “Northamptonshire Police can confirm that a complaint was received in June by the IPCC. The complaint is currently with the IPCC and, as such, it would be inappropriate to comment any further on the circumstances surrounding the case.” A spokesman for the IPCC told the Extra: “Northamptonshire Police has applied to the IPCC for dispensation on the grounds that the complaint is out of time. We are presently considering that request to dispense with the complaint and we have been in contact with the complaint’s solicitor.”
And the good news is... LAKELANDS HOSPICE in Corby, has become the first hospice to receive a national award, the Gold Standards Framework (GSF) Accreditation Quality Hallmark Award for the quality of its end of life care. Staff at Lakelands undertook the GSF Care Home training and adapted it for the needs of a hospice, in a pioneering development which the GSF Centre hopes will be help many other hospices, in particular those with outreach community services. They were presented with their awards at a special ceremony in Worcester. Assessors were so impressed with the standard of care demonstrated they awarded Lakelands Beacon status – the highest award. Cathy Langtree, nurse manager at Lakelands, said: “This training programme has been very time consuming and we have had to work hard to adapt it to a hospice setting, but it has been incredibly rewarding. “We have always prided ourselves on the quality of our care, but GSF has
helped us bring more structure to what we do and we now know we have achieved something for all our patients. It has also helped us feel more comfortable about talking freely about death and dying with our patients and enabled us to develop closer working ties with district nurses and GPs.” Following its success, Lakelands is now working with the National GSF Centre on a new programme specifically for hospices- the GSF Hospice Care Programme, to be launched at the next GSF Conference Nov 28th in London. GSF is widely used by primary care teams by more than 2000 care homes, 32 hospitals, 29 community hospitals and many domiciliary care agencies across the UK to improve care for people nearing the end of life. GSF helps to increase the number of people approaching the end of their lives to receive the care they want where they want it, protects them from inappropriate hospital admissions and increases their chances of dying in their
Birdbrains go a tweeting COMMON sense is sometimes a rare commodity. Just when you think it is being applied properly someone goes and ignores it. Take the case of Paul Chambers, the 28 year old trainee account from Corby, who was convicted of sending a “malicious communication” in 2010 by magistrates in Doncaster. Annoyed that snow had closed Robin Hood Airport and due to fly to Northern Ireland to see his girlfriend he tweeted to his 600 followers that if wasn’t sorted in a week he would blow the airport up. The tweet contained a number of swear words and was a “silly joke.” However, an off duty security guard at the airport spotted the e-mail a week later, informed the police resulting in Chambers being fined £385 with £600 costs. He also lost his job. A couple of weeks ago—almost three years after the tweet---Chambers’ conviction was quashed by the Court of Appeal. The Lord Chief Justice, sitting with two eminent colleagues, said: “If a person, or persons, should
receive or read it (the message) or may reasonably be expected to receive, or read it, would brush it aside as a silly joke, or joke in bad taste, or empty bombastic or ridiculous panning, then it would be a contradiction in terms to describe it as a message of a menacing character.” Lord Judge went on to say: “The more one reflected upon it the clearer it became that the message did not represent a terrorist threat, or any form of threat, but was a ‘conversation piece’ for Mr Chambers’ followers.” Corby MP, Louise Mensch, describing the case as a “shameful prosecution that should never have been brought” remarked: “Two years of a man’s life, stress and massive public costs wasted over an obvious joke.” Common sense, in the form of the Court of Appeal, eventually prevailed…but, it appears, only for a few days. For minutes after Olympic diver, Tom Daley and his partner failed to grab a medal in the synchronised event, a 17 year old, staying in a guest house in Weymouth, tweeted: “You let your father down and I hope you know that.” Tom’s fa-
ther died of brain cancer last year. Only hours later, at 2.45 the following morning, Dorset police raided the guest house and arrested the 17 year under the Communications Act 2003 accusing him of sending “by means of a public electronic network communications network a message, or other matter, that is grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character.” Tom didn’t make a complaint. He just replied that after doing his best some “idiot” had tweeted a stupid comment. The 17 year old eventually tweeted an apology to Tom. However, rude, misguided and in bad taste this and Paul Chambers’ messages may be regarded should the police be raiding a house in the early hours of the morning or the CPS spending nearly £20,000 mounting a prosecution and fighting the following appeals? We often may not like what people say or think, but unless there is a genuine safety threat in a tweet, let’s remember that we are supposed to live in a free and democratic society where freedom of speech is paramount.
preferred place of care – their home or care home. Winners of the GSF Quality Hallmark Award demonstrate a real improvement in the quality of care they provide. Research shows that GSF training halves the number of residents/patients dying in hospital and reduce crisis admissions. This leads to greater satisfaction for families, residents/ patients and staff and significant cost savings for the NHS. Professor Keri Thomas, GSF National Clinical Lead said: “GSF has become recognised as the kite marked model of best practice for end of life care in care homes, helping individuals and their families to identify homes delivering high quality care, a ‘gold standard’ of care for all their residents as they come to the last stage of their life. We are delighted that Lakelands has taken the model, adapted it meet the particular needs of a hospice day care and hospice at home service and is using it to excellent effect to give its patients the best possible end of life care.”

Joss Stone/Soul Sessions 2
The production line of youthful British singersongwriters churns out. There’s a muscularity about his sound that surprises, as on ‘The Wolves’. But he can do sensitive too with ‘Black Files’ a tear-jerker.
The Darkness always teetered on the edge of rock’n’roll pastiche. On ‘I Believe In A Thing Called Love’ they’d cracked the formula for metalit-was-ok-to-like. Back after a six-year absence, tasty stuff!
Imagine Abba if they’d been contaminated by an industrial Germanic sonic blueprint. Voila! You have Propaganda, a band who once described themselves as ‘Abba in hell’. A bewitching masterclass in industrial pop.

Coach Lisa - Be Nice to Yourself Lisa Phillips Executive Coach, Personal Development and Enjoying life! As a regularly featured personality on radio and TV, Lisa is an international expert on self development and coaching. She has owned her coaching business, Amazing Coaching for ten years and has worked in over 20 countries. Her passion and love of life is infectious. Greetings everyone and I hope you are enjoying the summer and the London Olympics. Time difference permitting, I have been catching the Olympics here in Sydney and feel the need to have a whinge. To be honest, I have been rather shocked at the way the media, and a few of the sports personalities themselves, react to not winning that illusive gold medal. Sadly, several members of the Australian team really beat themselves up for coming second and stating that they feel they have let both themselves (and their countries) down. Good grief, what does it take these days to be proud of our achievements, regardless of the outcome? Have we become a society where only perfection is good enough? Why do we find it so hard to actually pat ourselves on the back and say well done, whether it for qualifying for the Olympic or managing to get the kids off to school on time? Remember that old adage ‘Self Praise is No Praise?’ Well it’s time to dump that as far as I am I am concerned! As I am away travelling in the next few weeks, I am going to treat you all to a three part column on learning to be nice to ourselves. At the end of each column I am going to set you some simple action steps to
do. So if you want to build up your selfesteem muscle, then why not commit to giving them a go? If you want some support on your journey, you can also join my Facebook community at https://www.facebook.com/#!/AmazingCoac hing So let’s get started: Isn’t it interesting that often we have more patience and kindness towards strangers that we do to ourselves? I am sure you would never speak to other people the way that you speak to yourself? Most of us don’t even realise when we beat ourselves up with a big stick, putting ourselves down, cringing when we look in the mirror or telling ourselves that there is something wrong with us. We often spend far too much time comparing ourselves to other people thinking we are ‘ Not good enough’ The sad thing is that many of us are so used to treating ourselves this way that we don't know any different. It is really just a bad habit. The fact is, we rarely praise ourselves for our achievements or speak lovingly to ourselves on a daily basis. Get honest with yourself - Do you treat your friends better than you treat yourself? When is the last time you spoke encouraging to yourself or soothed yourself when you were upset or sad? When did you last give yourself a pat on the back or told yourself what a blooming fabulous person you really are? Learning to treat yourself with love and respect is the highest gift you can give yourself. Surely you deserve your own love? Ok, here are few of my favorite action steps for learning to be your own best friend. You don’t have to do them all, just pick one and commit to doing it for at least 30 days. In my next column I will be sharing more hints and tips for you to work on. No excuses! As a Life

A must have for summer holiday, apply this serum under moisturiser or sun cream before you go out. Also, apply to skin after sunbathing or a day out in the sun to help "cool down" the skin and boost your skin repair mechanism. Suitable for all skin types, women and men, it is the perfect preparation for a healthy glowing complexion in summer.

Top Self Tanning Tips
It's a fact that we all feel better with a tan, whether it's natural or fake. Self tanning products have improved so much over the last few years, that applied correctly, they're virtually undetectable. I've tried lots of different products and also had lots of tanning disasters too, which has enabled me to put
together a handy checklist of do's and don'ts when it comes to self tanning. Preparation and preservation are the key to a great long lasting tan. Here's a list of tip tips and what's likely to happen if you don't follow them!
Top Tip
Consequences if you don't follow it!
Wax or shave the night before you plan to tan Exfoliate thoroughly the night before tanning Start applying your tan to your face first, then move down to the neck, chest back and torso, leaving the arms and legs until last
If you apply tan to freshly waxed/shaved areas, the tan will seep into the hair follicles and you may get tiny brown dots all over! Waxing / shaving after you've applied tan will only remove it and make it go patchy. Applying fake tan to skin with dry flaky areas will result in the tan clinging to these areas and making it turn out patchy and uneven
Start by applying tan to top of one arm making sure to rub it in, use what's left to apply to the backs of the arms and make sure you don't forget the backs of the forearms. Repeat on the other arm Next apply to the middle of the thighs and the backs of the thighs, avoid the knees and ankles at this time. Apply to the lower legs. Then using what's left on your hands wipe lightly over the knees and ankles and tops of feet Finally but most importantly – wash your hands. If you've been using gloves you must do this next step too. Apply a tiny dot to the backs of your hands and rub the back of your hands together (don't use your palms!) This finishes the perfect application.
19
Ok so you've done everything but you still have some undesirable irable results. Here are some troubleshooting tips to fix that pesky problem Patchy / Uneven Tan – apply a good body scrub, rinse and apply more self tan mixed with a body lotion or balm. Orange Palms – use a sugar scrub to gently exfoliate the hands. Wet hands and massage in until the sugar dissolves. Tell tale white patches – apply the tan again to these areas only Dark ankles and knees – apply body scrub gently and dry in a circular motion with a towel. To prolong your tan, use products designed to reduce the skin's natural shedding tendency. Wash with a neutral ph showergel, don't use a shower puff, and pat skin dry rather than rub. Apply a good body lotion daily. Local beauty expert and salon owner Chantelle Mayhew runs Infinity Beauty Spa, in Wellingborough
By leaving the arms and legs until last, you can make sure you apply the tan properly as these two areas are the hardest to get right Missing the backs of the arms is a classic self tan error, that shows up in white streaks and tan lines. Knees, ankles and feet grab the tan colour very easily, so by only using what's left on your hands, you avoid dark brown obvious patches on these areas. Forgetting to wash your hands is another classic self tan mistake and will result in bright orange palms! Also forgetting to apply more tan to the backs of the hands results in a 'white glove' effect, where the tan stops at the wrists

EXTRA LETTERS & LOCAL RANTS
Kettering has a ranter! Dear..EXTRA Ref Tony Whitwell, issue 25/7, we certainly need to 'rant' the local Tories out of office for 100 years too, as what actually improves other than the Market Square environment, in 15 years too ?? Whether this means Labour's return or perhaps a combination of new parties like English Democrats / UKIP, well the voters must decide. The 'final straw' is surely this 'infallible belief' in electric train wires through here, unacceptable if for only 2 handicaps to life a) leaukaemia risk to children of lineside dwellers, the incidence said to be 2--3 times higher than people nowhere near high voltage wires b) swans/geese fly into them and break necks on impact; other reasons for abandoning this 'modern fad' number at least 12, some of which I cannot remember now, from a list once compiled. One new one is seemingly unthought generating capacity is not being added to for more trains, and reliance on wind power means that any journey could be delayed from 1 hour to 2-3 days in theory !! Others like high capital cost of set up and renewal have not been considered in relation to the real railways needs of recovering useful but lost 1950/60s/70s routes, eg for £500m the Matlock-Millers Dale / Coalville and Northampton--Wellingborough lines could be rebuilt ?? Free capital is not the best interest either, nor realistic in nartional debt terms, it further 'lame ducks' the industry, and creates ever higher fares, so Kettering Council and our 'fading MP' Mr Hollobone need to take stock, especially in terms of ruining grade 2 listed Kettering/Wellingborough Station canopy roofs. The better £9-2b, borrowed at 0% loan, could pay for independent traction research (ideal is gas turbine, living in faith of cheaper hydro-gas production future from science advance),
straightening out curves here and there (not Kettering), re-opening up to 2,500 route miles (or beginning the process for 30--40 years agenda), reducing fares by 50--60% to win back lost custom, and actually removing the 'accursed 1955' re-equipment systems which cost so much 1960s, that there was no money left for rural lines upgrade. Try restoring Kettering 15b depot too, housing 'new build' locomotives only, plenty to come yet -- the staff camaraderie/team spirit there pre 1955 plan effects is said to have been great -so much soul lost by 1955 'thinking', we could write a book on it ?? That's just one rant !! In NE Northants as a whole, there are so many, a good government would recruit 'moaners' to write the lot, and make it No 1 Region for the influence of recovery;?? One relates to the primitive River Nen Navigation and Northampton Canal which have claimed 2 young lives recently -- the Tories current mean planning for Inland Waterways is such a big rant needed, but regrettably a minority interest rarely attracts attention. Yours sincerely Timo J L Collier Kettering Dear..EXTRA It is clear neither Adam Simmonds, the Conservative candidate nor Lee Barron, the Labour candidate, have the qualifications or experience necessary to be successful in the role of this county’s first Police and Crime Commissioner. Neither have any police experience at all nor any relevant management experience within similar major organisations. Neither are therefore likely to be the right person to bring effective management and budgetary controls to any large complex organisation much less our county police service. Sadly, neither of the two
independent candidates which have so far declared themselves, are any better qualified for this important position. However, voters need not be depressed at the prospect of a lack of choice of suitably qualified candidates. The UK Independence Party will soon be in a position to confirm its support for a candidate who is both Independent and very well qualified for the post. The individual concerned, a long time resident of Northamptonshire and a senior local member of our party, will be self financed and not dependent on any outside financial assistance. His qualifications are beyond reproach as he has many years experience in senior management positions within major UK companies. In addition, he has local police experience which followed his RAF Commission, a UK Army Commission and service with UK Airborne Special forces. We are satisfied that voters will agree with us in that his qualifications and experience make him clearly the best qualified candidate for the post. We will shortly be issuing a statement giving his details and supporting his candidacy. Kind regards, Derek Clark Northamptonshire Dear..EXTRA Now that the summer holidays are here, just a word of warning to families who are jetting abroad to some of the smaller islands like in Greece. We went to KOS last week and found that a lot of car hire companies were offering a full tank of petrol which you pay for in advance and you just return the car empty at the end of the hire period. Now this is a scam, because the island was so small that you would have to do a lot of travelling to empty the tank, and if you return the car with half a tank left you don’t get a refund. My advice is to go for the companies

Gerard Nesbitt Corby Dear..EXTRA I received a letter from the Principal Cultural Officer for the Corby Borough Council informing me that I had been refused a grant award to host my BERT JANSCH EXHIBITION here in Corby on the grounds it " did not have an adequate Strategic fit with One Corby Priorities of Community Regeneration". I am dissapointed but definately not surprised as my profile is definately not "Arty Farty" tea and biscuits. I was asking for fianacial assistance to host a "Homage in vinyl" to the late Bert Jansch of the PENTANGLE who died last year of Cancer, his wife (Loren) died a couple of weeks later also of Cancer. Having lived my life "Off the page" in Corby ,I do understand that had I known the right people and attended the right meetings I might have done better? However I have submitted a video application to the OPUS ENERGY GIFT competition, you can vote for me by going onto youtube and click on BERT JANSCH EXHIBITION to support me. I have already received a staggering 700 plus votes which clearly shows the support for such an exhibition. Its not sour grapes on my part, I was warned before entering the CBC application by others who are involved in the arts in the town, that the track record for success and support in Corby is abysmal. If it involves a Kilt, a pub, or a reference to the good old days slowly choking to death in "THE WORKS" its a shoe in. Its time Corby accepted, this is a modern town, with modern attitudes, I am sure my exhibition will succeed, its only a matter of time. A few hundred pounds won't stop progress. And if you are wondering if Corby really wants a Bert Jansch exhibition, how will you ever know if you dont try? Maybe you would rather spend the money on the Cube?Money is tight, but I wonder if Poets and Art galleries are just a bit too dangerous to support in Corby? Tom Bingham Corby

Going for Gold
Decisions: “Do I go for the butterfly in 2030?
I am just loving the Olympics, I don’t normally follow too closely, but this year I can be found sniffing with the best of them at the hard efforts of those athletes. Can you imagine how it feels? All those years training, so easy to say, but the reality is so much more. Putting in long days, endless hours of training, often alone. The sacrifices these people make to their social lives and their family, Some putting a family on hold until their personal goal is reached. On top of that the discipline, only eating the right things, training the right way, and holding vices in moderation, if at all. These athletes have trained for years to get to
the Games, and I am sure there are many more that we never see make it to the top class events, but slog endlessly to try and get there. One could draw a parallel with motherhood? All those endless, endless hours of lost sleep, alone pacing the halls. Hours and hours invested in love, education, discipline, careful food control and health monitoring. Parents sacrifice their social life, personal goals, sometimes friends, holidays, careers, vices and money too. We have a goal in mind, a happy healthy child and an adult who can achieve the best they can. We never know if we will achieve our aim for
maybe 20 years, but boy do we put in the hours. When does a parents Gold come, when school finishes, when the offspring are secure at work, on their wedding day or the arrival of their babies? I’m not sure there is a day, but little showers of gold dust on many special moments. So to all of those winning and representing Team GB, well done, we are all proud and thank you. To all you parents, the golds in the post! Keep up the good work. Clare Szurek, mother to 3 and owner of mocha-mama, the cafe for expectant and new parents in Kettering.

AFC Rushden & Diamonds slip to defeat
> COUNTY AFC Rushden & Diamonds’ preparations for their inaugural season of senior football took a 3-1 sized denting at the hands of a Luton Town XI. Hatters’ striker Dan Walker scored all three goals in what was a first Diamonds loss of their pre-season programme. Manager Mark
Stamer has overseen four victories and a draw prior to the Luton defeat. Deven Ellwood’s looping header gave Diamonds some hope at 2-1, his and Alfie Taylor’s strong performances had an equaliser looking likely, but it was to no avail as the Conference Premier side would run out victorious. Recent signings Elliot Dent, Jack Wisniewski and former
Rushden and Diamonds man Chris Hope all featured in the third from last game of the pre-season, which finishes away to Lutterworth Athletic on Saturday August 11. AFC Rushden and Diamonds will begin their first season in the United Counties League Division One with a home game against Thrapston Town FC the following Saturday 18th.

EXTRA SPORT Gymnast sends Wellingborough’s congratulations winning streak
Beck experiments > COUNTY
KETTERING Town manager John Beck continued to experiment with his side this weekend as the Blue Square Premier side were beaten 5-3 by Grantham Town. New signings Ryan Hervel and Omar Bickles would debut in a Poppies side that finished the match with an entirely different XI than that which started it for the second game in a row. Kettering’s Sam Azis and Jamie Griffiths would put Beck’s side ahead and concede their first goal of preseason in a first half that finished 2-1. Inevitably, as 11 entirely different Kettering players took to the field at half-time, the momentum of the game changed and it would be the team two steps down the football pyramid that would prevail. Despite an early showing in
the second half, Nathan Mukuna would start what would become an astonishing turnaround as he sliced Higginson down in the box. Paul Grimes would convert the spot-kick to level. Grantham kept the dangerous Sean Bennett-Johnson away from the ball and profited from the results. Grimes doubled his personal tally for the third and Sam Puricoe would add a spectacular 25 yard drive of a fourth goal in the 77th minute. Four minutes later, Tony Battersby stole a fifth, slotting past Kettering keeper Laurie Walker. BennettJohnson’s well-earned final minute consolation wrapped up the day’s scoring. Following a strong 3-0 win against a developmental Stoke City side and a 5-0 demolition of Cogenhoe, fans can still have hope of a strong start to the 2012/13 season.

> FOOTBALL WELLINGBOROUGH Town FC continued their winning streak in pre-season this weekend, brushing aside Thrapston Town F.C. 3-0. The Doughboys produced a strong, consistent performance that
out-classed a team from the division below them, Mark Redding and Dan Surridge moving through the Thrapston midfield and defence at ease to set Surridge up for the first. Surridge would add his second with a sublime piece of finishing technique. He intercepted a defensive pass and dinked a shot over a
stranded opposition keeper. However, he was to be denied a third as the Thrapston defence would convert a Redding cross into their own net. The Thrapston challenge would follow a promising two weeks for Wellingborough, having hammered CCP FC 4-1 and beating Olney 3-1.
Steelmen strengthen with more signings > FOOTBALL CORBY Town FC manager, Ian Sampson, has further bolstered his side by adding another three faces to his Steelmen team. Ex-Northampton Town duo Jason Crowe and Andy Holt have signed to become permanent fixtures at Steel Park next season. On the website corbytownfc.co.uk, Sampson praised the experience that his new signings will add: “I am absolutely delighted with the additions. It goes without saying that their experience will be invaluable this year if we can get them in the team every game. “Between Crowe, Holt and [Leon] McKenzie, they have played nearly a thousand league games, so, hopefully, they will do OK for Corby. Fine form despite draws > FOOTBALL CORBY Town have continued a rich run of form, seeing them unbeaten in pre-season after beating Bedford Town on Saturday afternoon. However, it would be trialist striker Ricky Miller’s sixth goal in pre-season that would stick out as a highlight. Miller would level the scoring against the Stoke City XI that turned out at Steel Park. It featured wellknown faces, such as Jermaine Pennant, who hit a fine free kick to open the scoring on the night. Ex-Premier League striker Leon McKenzie has also opened his Steelmen account, bagging the equaliser against Rugby Town on July 31.
