INTENSIVE SONG BIRDS Choir aims to raise cash for state-of-the-art speech devices GIVING people a voice is the aim of a group of hospital workers and friends who are singing out for some special equipment. They have formed a fundraising choir to buy machines similar to the one used by world-famous scientist Stephen Hawking. The choir, named Intensive Voices (pictured), comprises staff at the Intensive Care Unit at Kettering General Hospital and also former patients, families and friends who have first-hand experience of what it is like to lose the ability to communicate – through injury or medical conditions such as sepsis. One who is on song for the £20,000 appeal – which would buy four of the speech devices – is Senior ICU Sister Caroline Simcoe. She said: “It’s hard for most people to imagine how distressing it would be to be unable to express even the simplest thoughts and emotions without being able to speak or write something down. “At the Intensive Care Unit, we see that every day.” “This new technology would create a whole new world of communication to help patients through a very difficult time.” More details about the appeal and forthcoming choir performances are on page 5.
