Supporters take the lead in protecting football club > Rockingham Triangle

In Short Every club needs its loyal supporters, but in the lower leagues that is more important than anywhere else. A group of Corby Town fans is getting together to add their weight to a move towards a new supporters trust. Loyal fans of Corby Town Football Club are putting plans in place to create a supporters’ trust. The initiative kicks off with an open meeting at the council chamber at Corby Core on Monday, April 23 from 7pm. The meeting will give interested individuals an opportunity to find out more about setting up a trust. The steering group’s chairman Robbie Dunion, a regular on the terraces at the Rockingham Triangle stadium to watch the Steelmen, believes it is important for a town to have a thriving

football club. “Corby is a footballing town and a lot of people like football. Although we have not got a great fan base there are many who do care about what happens to the club,” said Robbie. “They may support another team, like Rangers or Celtic, but they realise the importance of the town having a club which is part of the community.” A supporters’ trust will run as a not-for-profit organisation. It aims to strengthen the voice for supporters in the club’s decision making process and strengthen the links between the club and the community. The meeting will include presentations from Supporters Direct representatives and an example of an existing trust’s work from the chair of Cambridge Fans United. Robbie said: “We have been talking about doing something like this for a long time and we have already had a really good response. This is a chance for peo-

ple to get involved. The town is growing and a lot of people don’t realise the football club is there – we want to change this and get the community involved.” The steering group will be seeking a mandate to move the plan forward. Robbie said: “We have not sat down officially with the club but we will get a clearer idea of how we want to work at the public meeting. Once the trust is formed we can meet the club, who have already shown an interest in what we are hoping to do. This is a chance for supporters to have a voice.” Corby Town FC’s board of directors are showing a keen interest in the idea. Director Chris Rivett said they would welcome discussions to explore how the club could work with any newly formed trust. For latest Corby Town FC news see sport. > Brooke Weston A tutor planning a two-year placement in Africa is selling off his beloved collection of ties to help fund the trip. Robert Nicholls, Head of Modern Foreign Languages at Brooke Weston and his wife, Linda, will work as VSO volunteers in South Sudan. VSO has challenged the teacher to raise £3,000 as a contribution to the organisation’s work and so he took the decision to sell the ties. He confessed: “‘I say to the students that they never see the same tie twice in a school year. Yes, I do have enough to have a different tie every school day. There are one or two that I will keep for sentimental reasons but I can’t see myself needing nearly 300 ties once I retire!”

Charity offers young people a chance to boost their experience > The Cube

In Short Young people looking to make a good impression as they make their way in the world have been invited to get involved in a new programme to give them valuable experience and to help others as they do so Budding entrepreneurs interested in pursuing a career in the charity sector can sign up for an exclusive training initiative. The Young Philanthropy Programme is aimed at 18 to 24-year-olds who want to boost their CV through giving participants an opportunity to gain accreditation and hands on experience with a wide range of charities across Northamptonshire.

The Northamptonshire Community Foundation is organising and hosting day sessions including one at The Core in Corby on Tuesday, June 26. Rachel McGrath, Grants Director at Northamptonshire Community Foundation, explained: “We are really excited about launching this educational programme, the first of its kind in the UK and utterly unique in its content and aims. Each of the five courses will work with a group of no more than 20 young people and will be focused on boosting confidence, CVs, giving people hands-on experience and ultimately helping them get into the workplace. Each of the one day courses will include charity chat from a donor, an interactive charity game designed to explore attitudes to giving and the screening of films made

about local groups which have all received life-changing grants from Northamptonshire Community Foundation. After each course the group of delegates will look at where they would like to work in the county and the Foundation will help line up work experience at a variety of local charities. Those who complete 12 days’ work will graduate as a Young Ambassador at the charity’s next awards ceremony. This innovative programme has been funded by the Kirby Laing Foundation. Mr Shearer’s departure has given us the opportunity to look at new ways in which we can address these challenges.”

YEAR 7 students have been planting trees in the grounds of Brooke Weston college to mark this year’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Trees were donated by the Woodland Trust under its Jubilee Woods project which aims to see six million planted around the country this year. Brooke Weston’s conservation initiative has been running for the past six years with each successive cohort of Year 7s planting species of trees in the grounds. This has ranged from flowering cherries, ash and oaks high on the slope to the mainly hedgerow species such as holly, hawthorn, hazel, dogwood and dog rose that the students planted this year nearer to the access road. Groundsman Paul Twamley gave students a talk about the site before they headed out with trainers and spades to make their own mark on the grounds. He said: “The weather has been spot on and the students seem to be enjoying it. It is nice because the students will remember that they planted these to commemorate the TREE SPREE: Year 7 students at Brooke Weston plant the trees. AUDITIONS are taking place for young people keen to secure a place on a six-month training programme for committed performers. Corby Young Actors, which showcased its first work, Manifesto, at The Core earlier this month, is open to people between 15 and 25 years old. The weekly sessions provide an exciting opportunity for young people to develop their performance skills with high-profile artists from across the United Kingdom.

The creative team at The Core will be holding auditions on Thursday, June 7, to find a new group of performers keen to start work with the company from September. Charging points spark interest in electric cars Town gets five new charging points as part of green initiative > Corby

In Short Environmental campaigners are hoping the popularity of electric cars will continue to grow and Corby now has a range of new plug-in points were cars can be charged up ready for cleaner, greener driving OWNERS of electric powered cars can now get ‘plugged in’ at new vehicle charging points newly installed across Corby. Two of the charging points, each able to charge two vehicles simultaneously, are at the Corby Cube car park, another two are at the Corby Train Station and one is at the Corby Enterprise Centre, Priors Hall. The charging points have been installed as part of a project by Electric Corby, a new community interest company that has been set up by Corby Borough Council. The aim is to establish Corby as the UK’s leading practical, community scale test centre for future low carbon living and transportation. The charging points have funding from Section 106 development contributions and a Government grant through Plugged In Midlands. Corby Borough Council’s Lead

Member for Environment, Cllr Peter McEwan, said it was positive news for the town. “The Government expects to see tens of thousands of plug-in vehicles on the roads by 2015, and a lot more thereafter. Even if the charging points are a stepping stone to the next technology, we want Corby to be a part of that journey and gain investment and jobs along the way.” The allocated charging spaces can be used by joining HYPERLINK “http://www.pluggedinmidlands. co.uk/” www.pluggedinmidlands. co.uk, paying an annual £24 membership fee and receiving a swipe card which will enable access to the free electricity. The card can currently be used with any charging point on the Plugged In Midlands and Source East (East of England) networks. Plugged In Midlands is also working to ensure the card can be used elsewhere in the UK. Project Manager of Electric Corby, Nick Bolton, said: “We are confident electric vehicles have a big future, importantly, so is the automotive industry and the Government. There is a lot of investment in the technology, so by embracing this opportunity through Electric Corby we aim to attract some of that investment to the

town, and with it, jobs in the emerging green collar sector and, building on our pedigree, jobs in high-performance technology and motorsport.” Cenex’s Plugged In Midlands Programme Manager, Mick BarcleiSmythe, said: “A comprehensive network of charging points outside the home is crucial to the widespread adoption and to extend the range of electric vehicles and to provide electric vehicle owners with the peace of mind that there is charging support at their journey’s end. “As part of the Plugged In Midlands programme, Cenex have been able to help Corby Borough Council through the whole process, providing information and guidance on charging point types, location and installation. “We believe that the successful implementation of charging points in Corby will spur on other organisations, both public and private sector in the region, to become part of the growing electric infrastructure that is powering change in the Midlands.”

Lighting up time

> CORONATION PARK A BEACON to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee will be lit in the heart of Corby. The town has been chosen to be part of the national celebrations which will include hundreds of beacons being lit across the United Kingdom. The Queen will light the first beacon at a concert being held on Monday, June 4 at Buckingham Palace to mark her 60-year reign. Corby’s beacon will be lit in Coronation Park, near the town centre, and will be a highlight of the day of festivities in the borough. The Friends of Coronation Park are holding a party on the day which will have a 1950s theme.

Dance routine aims for bigger and better Event aims to bring together more than five million dancers > County DANCERS across the region are being invited to join more than five million dancers across the country in what is set to be the biggest dance event ever. Big Dance 2012 is the world’s biggest, most influential celebration of dance, aiming to involve five million people nationwide. Events planned to get people dancing include unique dance commissions, have-ago days, social networking competitions, dancing in libraries, town centres, parks and many more. As part of Big Dance 2012, the Schools Pledge is all about inspiring local schools and groups through dance by providing an opportunity to be part of a world record attempt. On May 18, 2012 - the day the Olympic torch

arrives in the UK, Big Dance will be aiming to break the world record for the largest dance routine ever undertaken. The Schools Pledge comes in two parts: learn the choreography and take part in the world record attempt at 1pm on May 18, 2012. The organisers are also encouraging people to undertake to do an additional 20 minutes of dance a day during Big Dance week (7-15 July 2012) The Big Dance Week will see spectacular dance events across the UK – part of the London 2012 Festival, the finale of the Cultural Olympiad. INCREASED NUMBERS: Corby Railway Station

Passenger rate grows at station Numbers up 90 per cent in three years > Corby Station FIGURES show that there has been a significant rise in passengers using Corby Railway Station. It is only three years ago since the station opened and passenger numbers have grown in that time by almost 90 per cent. The increase has delighted East Midlands Trains, which operates all passenger services to and from Corby to London St Pancras International. An East Midlands Trains spokesperson said: "We're delighted to be celebrating the third anniversary of Corby station, and are pleased that the past three years have proved so successful. “The number of passengers using our train services from Corby has increased by almost 90 per cent from 2009/10 to the current year (2011/12), which has far exceeded our expectations and demonstrates the important role of this new station. “Our staff have played a large part in making sure Corby station has been so successful and have worked

extremely hard to promote our services from Corby.” The supportive staff earned praise from David Fursdon, a member of Railfuture, who said he was not surprised at the big jump in passengers using the service. “Corby Station is a major asset to the town and a big part of its ongoing regeneration. Commuters and leisure travellers have all contributed to making Corby station successful.” He added: “Usage would be even higher if we had improved northbound connections at Kettering.” The increase in passenger journeys has been helped by the recently refurbished times and an average journey time of one hour ten minutes from Corby to London. The Corby station cafe Loco Coco is also reporting increased business providing a welcome service to rail users. Better access for foot passengers between the railway station and town centre will be provided when the Corby Walk is extended via a footbridge into the station forecourt.

Offering homeless a new place to live Disused property is brought back to life by partnership > Ripley Walk AN EMPTY property has been brought back into use to try to provide homeless people with somewhere to live thanks to a new partnership. Corby Borough Council and part-charity, part-lettings agency, LiveWise Housing, has resulted in one long-term empty property being brought back to life and six homeless residents securing a fixed address. The property in Ripley Walk, Corby, was a run down, empty property just 10 weeks ago and in that time LiveWise Housing has completed a transformation, turning it into a multiple occupancy home for six former homeless people. The house is now a fully licensed House in Multiple Occupation (HMO) and meets both Corby Borough Council regulations and is compliant with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. The project began when a private investor purchased the property and worked with LiveWise to turn the unused house into a safe and secure new base for tenants identified by Corby Borough Council as having no fixed address. LiveWise, will now work with the tenants to provide tenancy support services, education

and training and employment opportunities. Property owner, Kelly Lemon, said: “It’s a win-win situation. I feel that I have been able to contribute to solving the county’s housing needs, at the same time as securing a guaranteed income from my property.” Leader of Corby Borough Council, Cllr Tom Beattie, said: “Although people may not be identified as homeless there are some out there that are ‘sofa surfing’ and need help in finding a fixed address. We are very pleased to be able to work with partners on addressing this issue and helping to provide this innovative way to get people back in to decent, affordable housing. “As a local authority this project has helped not only to provide housing to those that need it but it has also contributed to tackling another private, long-term empty property and getting it back in to use.” Jonathan Chapman, Managing Director of LiveWise Housing said: “We are delighted to continue our working partnership with Corby Borough Council in providing some of the highest quality houses with multiple occupation. > Corby A traditional brass band that has been entertaining audiences for 110 years is looking for new players. Corby Silver Band is hoping to recruit former players who want to start playing again, or inexperienced musicians who want to join a band. The band, which was formed at Corby’s Pole Fair in 1902, tries to strike a balance between serious music making and having fun at its weekly rehearsals. A band spokesman said: “The band constantly strives to improve its playing standard by participating in contests where it competes against other local bands. The band also runs its own training band to support players with limited experience, and even beginners, before joining the main band. “The players, who are aged from nine to over 70, are hard working and committed and this shows in

the many indoor and outdoor concerts they perform each year from village fetes and church concerts to performances on local bandstands. They also frequently perform at local charity events. “The band has a busy engagement diary for 2012, which includes many concerts to celebrate the Queen’s diamond jubilee.” The band rehearses on Monday and Wednesday at 8pm, at the Corby Silver Band Club, on Denford Road. The spokesman added: “What makes Corby Silver different to other bands is that it is able to provide rehearsals without subscriptions or tuition fees for the players, therefore being accessible to all members of the local community. It is completely free to be a member. A COMMUNITY Centre steering group is working hard to find a solution after its long-awaited project hit another snag. The steering group for the Oakley Vale Community Centre met in emergency session to discuss a funding crisis when all the tenders for the build came in over budget and it became clear that savings of £278,000 have to be found if the centre is to be built before time-sensitive Section 106 funding is lost in April 2013. After some discussion with the architects and Andy Redfern from Corby Borough Council, the steering group unanimously agreed to reduce the size of the auxiliary part of the centre by 60 square metres which almost meets the required savings. Other cost cutting measures suggested by the architects included losing the split-level effect in the community area and reducing the suspended lighting rafts. The main hall would remain as

Tresham College is reporting 200 per cent growth in the number of apprentice places offered over the past 18 months. The college has worked hard to develop excellent partnerships with more than 350 employers to provide opportunities for existing and future workforces and in the past year, has supported more than 730 apprentices. Challenge is hailed a success > Rockingham THE organisers of the first 24-hour cycle challenge to be held at the Rockingham Racing Circuit have hailed the event a huge success after it raised more than £3000 for BEN - the automotive industry charity. Seven teams of four cyclists took part in the gruelling event at the Corby circuit, and completed a combined total of 1,347 laps covering 2613.18 miles. The 1.94-miles International Super Sportscar Circuit which is more famous for hosting some of the UK’s top motor racing drivers, proved to be a demanding ride for the 28 cyclists who had to endure some poor weather conditions. Chief Executive of Rockingham, Charlotte Orton said: “We would like to congratulate all the cyclists who took part and helped raise money for a charity very close to our hearts. The weather was treacherous at times, and we have total admiration for all those who completed the 24-hour marathon.”

While others may spend their leisure time watching sport or walking the dog, Tom who lives in Corby, is scouring car boot sales for inspiration. His latest challenge is to transform the hubcap of a 1966 Ford Corsair but other challenges have been a chessboard, a wine box, an oil can and even a Millennium Falcon from the Star Wars trilogy. Tom is justifiably proud of his work but declines all requests from potential clients. “It takes about three months in my leisure time to make a guitar,” he said. “I do not sell them nor do I do commissions, though I am constantly getting requests. My creations appear on over 300 websites and a video that went up on YouTube, where I put tutorial videos for those wishing to have a go, got 14,000 hits in one week.” Tom, is a keen supporter of Corby Arts Network, CAN, which is working to create a permanent gallery and studios for artists in the old library above Queen’s Square in the town centre. An exhibition at the gallery later this year is expected

to include Tom’s work called Homage to Bert Jansch in Vinyl. Tom explained: “I have, along with many others worked in isolation, as there is nowhere for creatives to function in Corby. The only hope for the future is that someone funds Corby Arts Network and makes use of the embarrassment of talent in this town.” To see the work of artists from across Corby visit the gallery open Wednesday to Saturday, 11am to 4pm.

Dear..EXTRA I would like to complain about the lack of parent and baby spaces in the council car parks in Kettering town centre. Every car park I go to there are an abundance of Disabled spaces, quite right too, but it’s a search for the parent and baby spaces. It can be hard work getting a little one in and out of a car and you need the car doors wide open to secure your child properly. I fear scratching a neighbouring car in the smaller spaces. I haven’t found any in the Cornmarket car park, the car park behind the post oﬃce and Marks and Spencer’s or the School lane car park-why is this? Do the council want us to take our trade elsewhere? Perhaps a clue to all the closed shops in the town centre if you are deterring the mums pound! A Kettering Mum

EXPERTS tell us that we should keep the romance in our relationship by having Date Nights, time spent focussing on the two of you. Is this the stuff of dreams or reality? First the logistics of a sitter, why is this always the woman’s job? The actual evening doesn’t start well when you are stressed by having to change twice. Baby sick and leaking milk - Chanel it ain’t! Add to this the depression you feel as you can’t get into the outfit you wanted to wear, realise it’s the first time you have looked properly into a mirror for ages (where did those wrinkles come from!), and can you afford to eat out once you have shelled out for a babysitter? Remember when

getting ready for a date used to take hours, if not days, of preparation and discussing what to wear, what to talk about and what was going to happen? The post mortem afterwards with friends, happy days. Finally you make it out the door, stressed, and spend journey discussing if sitter is going to be OK? All goes well at ﬁrst (although doesn’t the OH look tired) and you start to relax a little. But this new focus of your life (and that’s no bad thing) slowly starts to creep back into the conversation and the rest of the evening passes talking about the little darling/s. Well why not! You dreamed of having them, have wasted hours gazing at them as babes, and still pass time wistfully

thinking about their future. Well its 9pm, you are both shattered and turn down dessert to rush home and check all is well. Bank balanced emptied on meal and sitter, you both crawl into bed exhausted. Romantic? not really. Exhausting and expensive, and energy and spare cash don’t tend to be in abundance in the early days of parenthood, if ever. But you tried, and my view is that the trying is important. It doesn’t have to be a meal out, even a cup of tea; just the two of you alone can be special if you try. It’s the trying which will make a diﬀerence to the daily grind, and that’s where you will ﬁnd the romance. This year’s event will see the dragon pitted against a St George of some pedigree, played by historic re-enactor and swordsman, Mark Vance, in a thrilling combat show! “It takes a special type of dragon to die two or three times a day in front of an audience of thousands, but we think we’ve found just the character for our St George’s Day pageant at Kenilworth Castle,” comments English Heritage’s regional events manager, Karen Pike. “We are confident that this dragon will give our St George a run for his money, as he should be more nimble than our last wyvern, which means even more thrills for the audience!” Alongside storytelling – not only about the traditional legend, but also a legend that reveals Coventry as St George’s original home - and the ultimate confrontation between George and the dragon, visitors will also be able to wander around a medieval living history encampment, where they will meet all kinds of characters from the 15thcentury who are taking a break from their usual toils to enjoy the celebrations of the feast of St George, and take in the delicious smells of food fit for a knight cooking over an open fire! Always a crowd pleaser, dashing mounted knights will demonstrate their skills - and the bravery of their horses - in medieval jousting displays where they collide at speeds of up to 40 mph. The main event each afternoon sees gallant St George resplendent in shining armour astride his noble steed as he attempts to slay a fearsome green dragon. Supporters can wave the flag for their favourite as they cheer for the valiant patron saint or the feisty firebreathing dragon, in their display of courage and patriotism. Away from the main arena, there's plenty more historic action. A colourful living history encampment will provide a rolling programme of entertainment throughout each day including a fire breathing show, a bed of nails, plus minstrels and fools from medieval times. There's an authentic historic market to wander and children and adults can watch and take part in a host of other period activities including an interactive dragon puppet theatre and a mock children's battle.

Visitors will be able to see knights in full armour and explore the encampment where they can meet the knights and ladies and learn more about medieval life. Children can test their skill in the dragon themed hobby horse joust and take part in squire training before joining the children’s battle. Watch as St George is armed for combat and hear the story of St George in a Mummers play. Take part in a fun trail around the grounds in search of the dragons. Top car choices for sons and daughters Predicting who will buy which type of car has always been difficult for vehicle manufacturers, but nevertheless they do not make cars without knowing the target market and matching each model to specific demographic groups. There are naturally exceptions, but generally demographics play a huge part in how new models of cars are marketed. Large saloon and estate cars are usually aimed at families and are often driven by Dads. Mums tend to be less concerned with visual appeal and performance so are likely to choose MPVs or SUVs for the security that a bigger car offers. As people get older they are more inclined to drive a car that is reliable with cheaper running costs and perhaps some extra space for trips out with the grandchildren. Sons and Daughters. The young male driver is likely to go for a car which is both sporty and cool but this will depend on how much money they or their parents have available and their restrictions on what they will permit their sons to drive given safety concerns. in the bumper also create a clean point of separation for air passing around the side of the car. the plunge Hosepipe ban advice for Taking Early success for diving club struggling sports clubs Sport England releases document to help keep pitches and courts green > County CLUBS struggling to keep pitches in good condition during the hosepipe ban have been offered vital advice from Northamptonshire Sport in conjunction with Sport England. It is thought that around four out of every 10 outdoor sports pitches in England will be affected by the restrictions. With water crucial to maintaining the quality and safe performance of many outdoor surfaces, governing bodies of sports have come together with Sport England to put together a document that offers advice on how to maintain pitches and courts effectively during drought conditions; making the best use of rainfall when it does occur; managing the use of pitches to reduce the risk of damage; using water more effectively and working with the water companies to negotiate possible exemptions. The document will not only support sports clubs directly affected by the hosepipe ban, but will also encourage clubs outside the ban area to use the limited water more effectively and to make their facilities more resilient, which will help ensure their longevity. Current legislation only provides very limited exemptions for sports facilities, such as for

THE CORBY Steel Diving Club is celebrating after finishing well in just their second big diving competition, The Shipley Novices. The club, who were competing against another 17 diving clubs across the country, gained sixth place after demonstrating some impressive diving skills at the competition in Bradford. The Corby Steel Diving Club is made up of talented youngsters aged between eight and 12 years old.

Over the year, members of the club have been working hard to learn and develop their diving skills and the recent results show that it is definitely paying off. Corby Borough Council’s Lead Member for Community, Cllr John McGhee, said: “Members of the Corby Steel Diving Club have been working very hard and fully deserve the result. They should be proud of themselves just like we are all proud of them, their achievements are outstanding and I don’t doubt that they will only get better.”

CLUBS looking to train volunteers could be entitled to grants from Northamptonshire Sport, which is now offering scholarships to Clubmark clubs. The initiative is to help with the cost of training volunteers and covers courses in areas such as safeguarding and protecting children, first aid, grounds staff courses, refereeing/ umpiring courses (but not sports coaching courses which are supported through coaching scholarships).

Clubs can apply for up to £50 per course and up to £250 per club per year.
