AN AMBITIOUS five-year plan to bring Wellingborough town centre’s shops back to their former glory has got underway this week. The “back to the future” project aims to protect the town’s heritage and bring back its traditional character – using a £1.4million Lottery cash pot. Shops along Sheep Street, Silver Street, Market Street, Cambridge Street and parts of High Street could be eligible for grants of up to £20,000. The cash would be used to see period features uncovered, repaired and restored. Modern doors and windows

could be replaced to be more in keeping with the buildings and large fascia signs swapped for something more traditional. Councillor Tim Allebone, chairman of the council’s development committee, said: “We have some really beautiful buildings in our town centre, with a lot of history and character. “Many of the traditional market town features do still exist, but work needs to be done to discover these hidden treasures and bring them back to their former glory.” Full story, page 14.

Police complaints fall Have your say on fire service improvement > COUNTY

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE police officers saw complaints made against them fall by 30 per cent in 2011/12 compared to the previous year, new figures have revealed. The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) annual figures show the force recorded 376 complaints against officers, compared with 535 the previous year. The 30 per cent drop in complaints is more than three times the national average. The figures also show a fall in the number of allegations contained within the complaints, to a five-year low. They fell from 619 the previous year to 492 – a 21 per cent decrease. The figures also show that 167 allegations were dealt with by discussion between the complainant and the officer or member of staff involved. And, while the national average for dealing with and finalising complaint cases was 93 working days, the average for Northamptonshire was 72 working days. Chief Inspector Mark Taylor, from Northamptonshire’s Professional Standards Department, said: “Since August 2011, we have further improved our service by adapting our processes to record complaints in just 24 hours, not the national average of ten days. We recognise we still have more to do in achieving our aim of delivering an excellent service.”

> COUNTY NORTHAMPTONSHIRE Fire and Rescue Service is calling on people across the county to give their views on its plans for future improvement. All fire and rescue services are required by the Government to produce and consult on a strategic Integrated Risk Management Plan (IRMP) that outlines proposals for change and planned actions in the coming years. The 2013-2017 draft includes plans for the development of a strategic alliance between Northamptonshire and War-

wickshire fire and rescue authorities. County council cabinet member for infrastructure and public protection, Andre Gonzalez de Savage said: “The plan sets out what Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service is working to achieve over the next few years. “We have seen many successful outcomes over the past few years and I was very pleased to see some of the excellent work carried out by firefighters being recognised at the BBC 999 awards last month. “We now want people to give us their views on the goals and priorities includ-

ed in the plan, to make sure we are continuing to provide an effective and efficient service while also facing on-going financial challenges, and help ensure our vision of a safer Northamptonshire continues to be realised. “Only by knowing your views can we be sure that the services we provide are meeting the needs and expectations of the public.” The consultation period will run to January 4, 2013. AWARD-WINNING Northamptonshire-based writer Sue Moorcroft’s sixth novel will be published in paperback next week. The publication of the book, titled Dream a Little Dream, follows the launch of Sue’s novella Darcie’s Dilemma, released as an ebook this autumn. Sue, who lives in Kettering, said: “I used to dream about getting my first novel published. I didn’t realise that the sixth would be about dreams! “The word ‘dream’ can relate to something we have during sleep – or it can relate to a goal we’re aiming for. My new novel concerns both types and it surprised me how inextricably they became linked in the writing.” To write Dream a Little Dream – her fifth title with independent publisher Choc Lit – Sue researched such diverse subjects as narcolepsy, reflexology and even spent one of the most exciting afternoons of her life in the air traffic control tower at Stansted airport. Sue will be signing copies of her book at Kettering Waterstones from 12-2pm on Saturday November 10. In addition to her published novels, Sue is the author of many short stories, a creative writing tutor, an editor of numerous anthologies and a guest correspondent on the blog Girl Racer. Dream a Little Dream ebook is available online. The paperback is £7.99. For more information about Sue, visit: www.suemoorcroft.com

Entrepreneurial spirit is elementary in Irchester, where an extra-curricular sch ool club has secured local funding to enable their young super sleuths to design and produce ‘Little Sherlock’ science kits for the Christmas gift market. The Little Entrepreneurs meet after school at Lab_13, a STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) space in Irchester Community Primary School. As the only Lab_13 in Northamptonshire and the flagship lab nationally, Lab_13 Irchester fosters creativity as students can develop their own investigations and experiments outside of the primary curriculum. A group of the students have been us-

ing their powers of deduction to conduct market research into the experiments their Little Sherlock kits should contain and how the labels would best look. Sherlock himself would surely be impressed with their carefully considered business plan, which has successfully secured funding for the project from Wellingborough Chamber of Commerce and the Wellingborough Rotary Club. Representatives presented the enterprising youngsters with cheques at the lab on Thursday. This sponsorship means all the profit from the sale of the kits will now go towards enabling Lab_13 to become a sustainable part of the school. The Little Sherlock kits are on sale at the school and at the world’s first popup science shop – 3-2-1 Ignition! – in the Broadmarsh Centre, Nottingham.

APPLIANCE OF SCIENCE: Chairmen of the Rotary Club and the Wellingborough Chamber of Commerce presented cheques to Jake and Rosie from the Little Entrepreneurs Club. The sponsorship money will pay for making science kits, which will make money for Lab_13 to remain in operation at the school.

County leads the way supporting History of Higgins disabled youngsters > COUNTY NORTHAMPTONSHIRE County Council’s pioneering work to transform how young people with disabilities are supported into adulthood came under the spotlight at a national conference. The National Children and Adults Conference is one of the main events on the social care calendar, bringing together councillors, directors, policy makers, MPs and various organisations from across the voluntary and private sectors. Conference delegates heard how the council has been working to create a transitions team for disabled young people aged between 14 to 25 to improve their journey into adult life.

The authority is one of the first in the country to take this new approach which will replace the existing arrangement of having separate services for disabled young people and young adults. This means young people will have the same team support them as they get older. Cabinet member for public health and social care, Councillor Robin Brown said: “The journey from childhood into adulthood can be difficult for any young person and this can be even more significant for young people with disabilities or learning difficulties. “ We want each person to have a positive experience as they grow up and successfully move them on to employment or training opportunities. “In Northamptonshire, we are taking an innovative approach to achieving this.”

Chamber reaction to jobless figures > WELLINGBOROUGH

47 per cent of all respondents had tried to recruit new employees during the third quarter of 2012, with 71 per cent of manufacturing and 64 per cent of service opportunities being for full-time positions. “The latest job market figures are a positive development, signalling both locally and nationally that people are returning to work. “However, forceful measures are still needed to ensure we return to sustainable positive growth. Efforts to reduce the deficit will mean that employment in the public sector will continue to shrink, which will affect local job figures. “So, it is critical to ensure the private sector remains able to create new jobs. The Government must continue to help businesses grow and create jobs with measures such as further deregulation, increased infrastructure spending, and the creation of a Business Bank.”

THE publication of national unemployment figures this month sparked a response from the county’s Chamber of Commerce. Paul Griffiths, chief executive of Northamptonshire Chamber, said: “The latest job figures are encouraging and heading in the right direction. “All areas in the county are showing either a drop in unemployment or have stayed at the same level. “The largest decreases are in Wellingborough, Northampton North, Daventry and Corby – which hit a four-year high in youth unemployment when the last figures were announced in August. Kettering has remained at the same level, with 4.1 per cent of the town out of work. “This echoes what we are hearing from local businesses. When we surveyed Northants businesses as part of our Quarterly Economic Survey last *Business Expertise with Extra columnist Paul month, we were pleased to find out that Griffiths is on page 10. »

THE FOX & HOUNDS

The Higgins name is synonymous with the Building trade in Wellingborough. Established since 1866, they have been supplying building materials to both professional tradesmen, and the DIY’er for over 145 years. Operating from a massive 4.5 acre site in the town, they hold stocks of most of the building, plumbing or timber materials that are required for a small household repair job or a complete new house. Sales Director Malcolm Sercombe says “ We can see the job through, from the concrete foundations to the chimney pot, and on the inside,

from the bathroom suite to the door knocker..” Having such a long history, the company also has many long standing employees, with many years of experience, in building, plumbing, heating and timber materials. With the focus now being on energy saving materials, and renewable energies such as solar power, Higgins Building Supplies has recently become a Green Energy Centre. Managing Director, Nigel Higgins says “..in these times of recession, there are many people deciding to improve, not move, preferring to invest their mon-

ey on their current property, by refurbishing the bathroom, installing a more energy efficient heating system, or laying a new patio – transforming the garden into an outdoor living room..” The focus of the Company has always been on service, with a fleet of crane delivery vehicles their aim is to get the materials where you want them, when you want them – and delivered free! In these days of multi-national companies, Wellingborough’s largest Building materials supplier is going strong, still family owned, family run, and proudly independent.

Garden waste collections to continue over winter > WELLINGBOROUGH

GARDEN waste collections in Wellingborough will now continue throughout the winter months. The brown bins service, which usually stops between October and March, is being funded by cash brought in from increased recycling in the borough. As extra money has been generated by improved recycling rates this year, the council will be able pick up garden waste for the whole of this year apart from two collection cycles over Christmas. Council leader Cllr Paul Bell said: “Last year was an exceptionally mild winter and residents weren’t happy that they were still mowing their lawns and sweeping up leaves long after the garden waste collections had stopped. We’re pleased we’ve been able to do something about this. “We get income from both the amount of waste that can be recycled and also for the amount we divert from landfill. In short, extra recycling equals extra money. “It’s so easy to recycle in Wellingborough and we’d encourage everyone to do it as much as possible. Not only does it benefit the environment, it also generates money which can be used to give residents the services they want.”

both the owner of the Priory Road address, as well as the friend who had paid Furnell, it was decided there was enough evidence to go ahead with a prosecution. At the magistrates court Furnell pleaded guilty to not exercising a duty of care in respect of the disposal of the rubbish, and was fined £400, plus £150 costs and a £15 victim surcharge. Peter Morrall, chairman of the Wellingborough Council’s community committee, said: “We will always remove flytipping once it’s reported to us, and then we will try

If they are found to have failed to take the proper care in disposing of it – they can still be liable. “Always check whether the person you’re contracting is a registered trade waste carrier. Poppy appeal hits the right notes > WELLINGBOROUGH THE official launch of this year’s Poppy Appeal in Wellingborough was marked with a free concert. The event, which was organised by the Royal British Legion, took place All Hallows church in the town centre.

The Mayor of Wellingborough Ken Harrington was among those attending the concert, which saw a performance by the 60s Club Band. The Royal British Legion looks after the welfare, interests and memory of those who are serving or have served in the Armed Forces. The Poppy Appeal provides the main source of funds to maintain the schemes that help over 100,000 people each year. Last year’s appeal raised more than £39million

kk

across the country. Councillor Harrington said: “This year’s appeal focuses support again on the Afghan and Iraq generation of the Armed Forces family. “ More than 10,000 people have been helped since 2003 and with the Afghan conflict continuing, it is inevitable that this number will continue to rise. The Legion will be there for them and their families today and for the

rest of their lives. “I urge people to show their appreciation of the Royal British Legion and give generously to the Poppy Appeal, in remembrance of those who have served us so well and for all who have given their lives.” There will be a service of Remembrance on Sunday November 11 at the Cenotaph and anyone wishing to attend should assemble at Broad Green, Wellingborough, at 10.45am.

Extra Business Expertise Modern service with The importance an old-fashioned smile of exporting > WELLINGBOROUGH

IN THESE modern times of faceless online shopping, the good old days of friendly customer service have not completely died out in Wellingborough. Mobile Radio Services, an independent electrical goods specialist, has stood the test of time since 1950, being run by the same family since the mid-80s. Throughout six decades of service, the company has prided itself on its excellent reputation, built on an ability to provide expert and honest advice, together with quality products and a first class after-sales service. Paul Thompson, managing director since 1988, reflected on some of the challenges the economy has posed for the company. modern consumer via the addition of their Internet presence. Despite keeping up with contemporary trends, Paul is proud of his company’s traditional values: “We still give good, honest, face-to-face, old-fashioned service to people and honest advice – and back that up with our after-sales service, which we’re quite proud of.” Many of the staff have worked in the Wellingborough shop since the 1990s and even earlier, and Paul emphasises: “We’ve all been here a long time and we know the business inside out. We know our customers and they know us, which counts for a lot these days.” Word of mouth and the adage that ‘the customer is always right’ means a lot for Paul and his team, for whom repeat business is fundamental to success. The company offers sales, rentals, fast local delivery, installation and after-sales service on a range of quality products from the best brand names in the industry. Paul adds: “We’ll sell customers what they need, not what we think they should have.” Perhaps that’s why Mobile Radio Services has survived 62 years and continues to serve the local community.

War on ‘gas-guzzlers’ a threat to rural life > COUNTY A RECENT report on car taxation by the thinktank Centre Forum, backed by Energy and Climate Change Minister Ed Davey, would have far-reaching implications for the region’s working countryside if adopted by Government, says Northamptonshire’s rural business watchdog, Country Land and Business Association (CLA). As motorists choose smaller, more economical cars, the Treasury is looking for methods of dealing with the projected fall in income from Vehicle Excise RURAL PROOF: Deputy director Duty (VED), commonly of the county’s Country Land and known as road or car Business Association, Tim Isaac. tax. These new propos-

als, already nicknamed the Top Gear Tax, would replace VED with a one-off purchase tax, charging £50 per gram of CO2 emitted over 94g/km. By this method, it is hoped car buyers will force manufacturers to develop ever-greener engines. But according to CLA deputy director Tim Isaac, this new move would have dire financial consequences for those who live and work in Northamptonshire. He said: “If ever there was a case for rural proofing, here it is. To Mr Davey, in his constituency of Kingston and Surbiton, these measures to reduce the numbers of thirsty ‘Chelsea Tractors’ must seem eminently sensible. “Northamptonshire’s rural workers often need 4x4 vehicles to do their jobs. Vehicles frequently have to work off-road, cope with atrocious weather conditions or tow trailers.” “Any proposed measure must be rural proofed to prevent anyone who has to use a bigger engine from being unfairly penalised.”

Radical approach to ending re-offending > COUNTY A RADICAL new approach has been launched in Northamptonshire in a bid reduce the number of people who reoffend – particularly after their release from prison. Launched this month, it means those posing a threat of re-offending or who were sentenced to less than 12 months in prison for a variety of crimes will be ‘engaged with’ by special Diversion officers. The aim is that the offenders whose crimes cause the most harm are managed in a co-ordinated manner in the community. The police, together with the probation service and private and third sector agencies, will provide a co-ordinated system of mentoring, training, education and other forms of support to help them break the cycle of crime. Chief Inspector Mark Evans, who has spearheaded this approach, said: “Offenders

sentenced to more than 12 months in prison, are often released with conditions to engage with probation and police officers in order to assist their rehabilitation. This is known in our county as the Rose Programme. “However, what we find is that those who receive less than 12 months are not statutorily obliged to engage with the authorities. Yet this category of offenders often causes the most harm locally and are also more likely to reoffend once released. “What’s new with this approach is that those who are released from prison and fit into the category of less than 12 months in prison will now be assessed against a number of pathways involving: drugs and alcohol support, accommodation support, education, training and employment support, alcohol and drugs intervention, health support, finance and debt assistance, guidance with children and families as well as attitude and behaviour management. “We are also working with local support agencies like Groundworks to provide street mentors to help people get

back into mainstream society. “In addition, we will continue to use the highly effective Buddi tracker system, which allows us to electronically monitor and manage offenders. This can allow us to potentially eliminate people as suspects as well as allowing officers to conduct curfew checks remotely. “Anyone of concern who fails to participate in the programme or does reoffend will then be subject to the enforcement arm of policing, working side-by-side with this new team. “We want to make sure that people are given the appropriate chances to integrate back into the community while reducing the risks of reoffending and improving community safety. “As well as the anguish of victimisation, offending costs society a huge amount of money with everything from insurance or personal loss to court and prison costs. “It is hoped that the investment in diverting people away from criminality with this joint partnership programme will prove to be a much more cost-effective use of public funds.”

CLEAN TEAM: Grafitti is removed from a property in Newcomen Road.

> Wellingborough A MAJOR clean-up campaign in Wellingborough saw a blitz on graffiti and fly-tipping across the town. The week-long operation also saw eyesore underpasses painted and litter-picking on streets and in parks. Northamptonshire police’s Safer Community Team officers, the council and the probation service joined forces with local communities in the big tidy-up. Schools and residents associations also joined in. The police, together with Wellingborough Homes, paid for a number of skips to help a big spruce-up of Castle Ward, Kiln Way and Minerva Way. Sergeant Sharan Wildman, of Wellingborough Town Safer Community Team, said: “Anti-social behaviour seriously affects people’s quality of life. “The problem of littering makes communities feel less good about themselves. Take litter home with you, don’t throw it out of car windows or into the gutter. “We are determined to work closely with our partners in Wellingborough to make the town a pleasant place in which to live and work.”

The clean-up followed complaints from local people about graffiti in the town and the state of underpasses. The week of action kicked off in Castle ward’s Newcomen Road, with graffiti removed from nine private houses in the area by the council’s environmental services company Wellingborough Norse. At the same time, offenders on the Community Payback scheme started painting over graffiti in 12 underpasses around the town. Community litter picks took place on Knox Court and Queensway, with members of the public joining in. Councillor Peter Morrall, chairman of Wellingborough Council’s community committee, said: “Graffiti is a real concern for our residents and it’s essential we pool our resources, expertise and equipment so that we can tackle the problem effectively. “In these cash-strapped times, it’s difficult for one organisation to sort it out completely by themselves.” Mary Geaney, Probation Trust director, said: “As a trust, we are delighted to be playing such a key part in this project and will ensure that supervised offenders will work to improve the environment for local residents.”

Parking scheme to be extended > Wellingborough

A PARKING scheme to help cut congestion in the streets around Wellingborough train station is set to be extended to include more of the town. Residential streets in the area have become increasingly busy as commuters leave their cars there to avoid paying station parking charges. A parking permit scheme was introduced last summer on a number of streets close to the station, following complaints from locals that they were unable to find spaces near their homes. Council chiefs say when the scheme was put in place it was acknowledged that the problem might simply be relocated, as commuters moved to park on the roads just outside the permit zone instead. A plan has now been put forward to reduce the congestion by extending the scheme to include more streets. Widening the perimeter of the permit zone would mean more roads just outside the scheme for commuters to use for parking, which would reduce the number of cars in each individual road. Councillor Tim Allebone, chairman of Wellingborough Council’s development committee, said: “What we have now is a number of hot spots, a few roads just outside of the current permit zone, which are getting overwhelmed by commuter traffic. “Residents have complained so we’re offering the chance to have the permit scheme extended. This should stop the parking issues but also reduce the likelihood of the problem being relocated even further out. “We do understand the reasoning of the commuters, as they’re not doing anything illegal and it’s obvious why they’d want to avoid parking charges of £8.50 a day at the station. “However, we do need to take the concerns of residents seriously. “We will give residents in the streets covered by the proposed extended scheme a choice – do they want permits or not? “If more people in a street vote yes than no, then that street is likely to become part of the permit scheme.” The permit scheme is run and enforced by Northamptonshire County Council and permits cost £25 a year.

First step to restoring our heritage Festive market > WELLINGBOROUGH

ALL that is Christmas will be on offer at ‘My Little Vintage Christmas Market’ being staged at Nene Court, The Embankment, Wellingborough, on Saturday November 10. With ten ‘pop-up’ shops to browse, all housed within Christmas Cabins, there is sure to be plenty to put visitors into the festive spirit. More than 30 stalls will be arranged in the marquees, offering vintage collectables, clothing and accessories, retro gifts, curios and antiques, unique presents, homemade cakes and Christmas treats, handmade Christmas decorations, florist-designed Christmas wreaths and table displays, soaps, shabby chic furniture, works of art . . . and even your Christmas turkey to be ordered from Pastures Poultry! Plus, the Hart Micro Brewery will be having an open day and retail outlets at Nene Court will be open, too. Admission is free.

> WELLINGBOROUGH THE first step in an ambitious five-year project to restore and protect Wellingborough’s heritage has got underway. It follows the announcement of a council project using Lottery cash to bring historic town centre shop fronts back to their former glory. Shops along Sheep Street, Silver Street, Market Street, Cambridge Street and parts of High Street could be eligible for grants, which would see period features uncovered, repaired and restored. Modern doors and windows could be replaced to be more in keeping with the buildings, and large fascia signs could be swapped for something more traditional. Local shopkeepers have attended a series of drop-in events to learn more about the grants, which could range from £1,000 to up to £20,000. Councillor Tim Allebone, chairman of the council’s development committee, said: “We have some really beautiful buildings in our town centre, with a lot of history and character. “Unfortunately, over the years, quite a bit of this character has been covered up or fallen into disrepair, and a number of shop fronts no longer match the buildings that they belong to. “Many of the traditional market town features do still exist, but work needs to be done to discover these hidden treasures and bring them back to their former glory.

The Rolling Stones are rock’s DNA and this is a collection of their greatest hits spanning ‘Sympathy For The Devil’ ‘Tumbling Dice’, ‘Fool To Cry’ and ‘Miss You’ and two new tracks, including the not too shabby ‘Doom And Gloom’.

Scot Calvin Harris is the go-to man for pop’s luminaries. His pumping solo album is adorned by the likes of Rihanna, Florence, Dizzee and Tinie Tempah. All collaborations work out apart from the weak-as-wee Ellie Goulding.

You gotta love Neil Young, who recently claimed he’d never heard of Bono. The guitar-playing troubadour continues to mine his own particular sonic gold like peer Bob Dylan. ‘Driftin Back’ clocks in at half an hour. Great Value.

Leona Lewis goes back to woe-is-me mode after the relative commercial cul-desac of ‘Collide’. ‘Glassheart’ is a conscious update of the ‘Bleeding Love’ template with tracks like ‘When It Hurts’, ‘Un Love Me’ and ‘Fingerprint’. Any

Bristol birthed a scene called ‘trip hop’ in the early 90s – a loose coalition of hip hop, reggae and dub. In the debut album from Massive Attack titled ‘Blue Lines’ it achieved a sonic perfection and in many ways (along with Soul II Soul’s Club Classics and Tricky’s Maxinquaye) laid a musical template for UK music. ‘Blue Lines’ is a genuine spine-tingling mo-

ment in pop’s (if you can call it that) evolution. The album is dominated by the epic ‘Unfinished Sympathy’, beautifully accompanied by Shara Nelson’s impassioned vocalising. A cover of ‘Be Thankful For What You Got’ is almost hymn-like, while the clattering percussion that runs through ‘Safe From Harm’ could bust any soundsystem on the planet.

Congratulations: It’s The Wedding Present

Leona Lewis is that rare thing – an ‘X Factor’ survivor. Her career didn’t disappear under the baggage of Simon Cowell and ever since her singles ‘A Moment Like This’ (a UK Xmas number one and the most downloaded track of 2006) and ‘Bleeding Love’ she has managed to keep a British (and worldwide) public engaged in life chez Leona. Her forte is the big power ballad. They are the bedrock of her two albums ‘Spirit’ (2007) and ‘Echo’ (2009) and responsible for generating 20 million copy sales plus. ‘Glassheart’ Girls Aloud are marking ten years together (or relatively together) with an arena tour nextyear that is widely expected to be their career finale. Normally, the demise of a pop-by-numbers Syco experiment would merit little in the way of dry eyes. But Girls Aloud have delivered a succession of bonkersly brilliant singles. ‘Biology’ still sounds like a song with not one but two great choruses. Debut single ‘Sound Of The Underground’ crackles with modernism. Dirtbag’ (yes, really) knows these girls are special. Perversely, The Wedding Present are what you’d call an acquired taste. Singer David Gedge’s mannered vocals were born and raised in Leeds and his band – he has been the sole ever present figure since the group’s formation in ’85 – continue to tour and release new material. One-time peers of groups like The Gang Of Four and The Fall and a key band on the hugely influential NME-released ‘C86’ compilation – to which they contributed the track ‘This Boy Can Wait’ – they remain a defiantly indie band with a commitment.

EXTRA Time - Showbiz and Entertainment Fun from Heart 96.6 in Northamptonshire. HOW ON EARTH did we get to November so soon! Really looking forward to Firework weekend, and I know there are some fantastic displays taking place across Kettering, Corby and Wellingborough, that I am hoping to get to! We caught up with Lawson this week to talk about their debut album, ‘Chapman Square’. It’s the second time we’ve chatted with the guys, the first time I tried to impart some of my legendary fashion advice and suggested that they would look good in florals, so I was keen to know if they’d taken that advice on board? Ryan said, ‘actually Joel is wearing a flowery shirt today and he looks good in it’. Yay!! We wanted to know the significance of ‘Chapman Square’. Ryan told us “It’s a development in the south of London, it’s nothing to write home about to be fair, it just means a lot to us four, it was the first place we met and were we recorded our first songs and our first you tube video. It was where I lived with an ex girlfriend, who a lot of the songs are about. We had a lot of good times but a lot of sad times”. “Standing in the Dark” from the album is one of our favourites tracks off the album, and we wanted to know who the guys would prefer standing in the dark with? Given the choice of Lady GaGa and Rihanna, the guys chose Rihanna…. Girls Aloud were chosen ahead of The Saturday’s because they’re getting back together and the guys were keen to know about their touring plans! Finally, we wanted to know who would win between Marge Simpson and Miss Piggy. Marge Simpson won for her sexy voice and blue hair…. Because Ryan has actually been out with a girl with blue hair!!! EXTRA FASHION Land girls The Country Heritage look is one of the biggest trends out there this autumn. Tweed, feathers, furs, flat caps, equestrian-style boots and waxed quilted jackets, once the preserve of the countryside and the hunting, shooting and fishing brigade, suddenly seem like the chicest option even for urbanites not planning on going anywhere near a field. And it’s all down to the Burberry Prorsum Autumn Winter 2012 catwalk show: with the somewhat bygone era-sounding theme of ‘town and country’, it took the staple wardrobe pieces required for braving the great outdoors and put a cool new spin on them, making Country Heritage a coveted and desirable trend. As well as traditional tweed, Burberry incorporated Arts and Crafts-inspired woven florals with a country feel into the collection, which, along with the addition of bow belts around the models’ waists and velvet detailing, put a feminine spin

on what is generally considered to be very much a masculine trend. And it is the now iconic illustrated owl emblem (along with other woodland creatures including foxes, dogs and sparrows) that featured on jumpers and t-shirts on the Burberry runway that have really made the trend xgo stellar, and have spawned a thousand high street lookalikes in their wake. While a cute owl jumper is a wise way to invest in the look, other elements of the Country Heritage trend are everywhere on the high street, too. Quirky tweed hats with feathers can be worn with a tweed or waxed coat or jacket, chunky knits can be teamed with tweed skirts and trousers, and 60sstyle tweed pointed flats are a subtle way to incorporate the trend into your everyday wardrobe. The beauty of this trend is that whether you wear just one item or fully embrace the look, including some element of Country Heritage in an outfit will give you an instant new season wardrobe update.

This includes making a commitment to making your own needs and happiness a priorityt is happening in your life right now. learn to honour them as well – without feeling guilty. Also try to give up the need for perfectionism and stop setting yourself ridiculously high expectations of yourself. Aim to do your best and that is sufficient. One of my favourite tips to prioritise your emotional wellbeing is to write a list of 50 things which make you happy and commit to doing at least one thing a day from this list. Now the list does not need to be full of expensive ideas but it could just be simple

The problem with that is that if we don’t take care of ourselves, sooner or later we won’t be of much use to anyone else—or to ourselves! If you are one of those people who are constantly running around in emergency mode, your mind and body may just end up paying a high price for putting other people needs before your own. I am a big supporter of the airplane/oxygen metaphor. You must put on your own oxygen mask before helping others. In my coaching practise, I still get shocked at the amount of people who come to me burned out and exhausted believing that everybody’s needs are more important than their own. These people often believe that self-care is selfish and may have difficulty saying No to other people. I call these people the ‘ People Pleasers, fixers or rescuers’ as they continue to put other people’s needs and wants before their own and in time, can end up feeling burned out or even resentful towards other people. Now don’t get me wrong, it is important to care for others, but we also need to commit to taking care of ourselves. Remember, when your own needs are taken care of, you are much more equipped to look after other people. Start by changing a few small things in your day like making sure you take regular breaks, eat regular meals and practise saying No to other people. Tune in to your own needs and

NEWS: 01604 931117

Learn Direct do their sums whilst the owner nips off for a well earned break A GOVERNMENT SUPPORTED training centre, designed to help people improve their skills, has suddenly closed following an investigation into alleged irregularities. The In Business Training centre in Tresham Street, Kettering, failed to open ten days ago after the staff were interviewed at a local hotel by members of learndirect, the government sponsored supplier of courses to improve skills in maths, English, IT and business to hundreds of learning centres up and down the country. Staff arrived a week last Friday to find that the main network computers and other equipment had been removed the night before, allegedly by the centre’s owner, Mahmoud Kaffash, and tables and chairs “piled on top of each other.” Mr Kaffash, 53, who set up In Business Training (UK) Ltd in October 2008, operated two centres, one at 15 Tresham Street and the other in Bromham Road, Bedford. It is understood he recently opened a third in Wigston, Leicestershire. Almost two weeks ago, on Thursday October 18th, staff members were called to interviews by senior officials of learndirect at a local hotel, the Best Western Nasby Hotel in Sheep Street, where they were questioned about the running of the Kettering operation. The centre officially closed the following Monday. One of the Kettering team told the Extra: “The interviews of each staff member was timed at 90 minute intervals and conducted under police-type rules; each person was cautioned at the beginning of the session. “We were asked about procedures in the office and, in particular, about how people taking courses had been awarded certificates and if they had passed a particular course or module before being signed off as having acquired a qualification.”

Staff had become suspicious a few weeks earlier when a member of staff was fired and then learndirect refused to allow any new members of the public to sign on for courses. “We were told that the sacked employee was offered £2,000 to keep quiet about how the operation was run,” alleged a member of staff. “We have been told that learndirect is looking into allegations of fraud and that, if proved, details will be handed to the police.” The staff member said that employees had been informed by Mr Kaffash, an Iranian, who according to company records lives in Newport Pagnall with his wife, Fatemeh, had told staff he was leaving the country immediately after learndirect started investigations, despite, also, claiming he had made arrangements to meet learndirect investigators. One of the staff, who phoned learndirect to see what was happening, said he was told learndirect had cancelled the contract with In Business Training (UK) Ltd because the main computers had been removed. However, staff said that in the last few days they had received e-mails from Mr Kaffash saying that they would receive their monthly pay on November 1st Calls to the Kettering and Bedford offices went unanswered, as did e-mails to Mr Kaffash. Jennie Hopkinson, spokesperson for learndirect told the Extra: “In Business Training took the decision to close their centres, including the one in Kettering, and as a result learndirect has terminated their contract. Our focus now is ensuring minimum disruption to learners and we are working hard to find other centres for them to continue their learning. We have been interviewing staff at IBT and we are waiting to talk to the owner so it is not appropriate to comment any further at this stage.”

MAHMOUD KAFFASH: They say Iran is lovely this time of year...

THE POPPIES: Saved today...or...

140 years melting away? THE TRIALS and tribulations of Kettering Town football club have been hitting the headlines for over a year. But is to-day finally doomsday for the struggling, debt-riddled club? A terse message on the club’s web site states that the club has been given until to-day to comply with stipulations laid down at an emergency meeting of the Board of the Evo-Stik Southern League a week ago if it is to continue playing in the league. The full League statement said: “Kettering Town’s League match on Saturday with St Neots Town is postponed. “The Club has been given a deadline of 31st October to satisfy certain conditions placed on them by the League. There will be no further comments until 31st October from the League.” The 64,000 dollar question though is: will their next scheduled game away to Barwell on Saturday take place or has the team, as seems likely, played its last game? Many supporters believe that the club is a “twitching corpse,” emitting a “clearly audible death rattle” and that the end is nigh. Too many times over the past months attempts have been made to breathe new life (and money) into the club. Disgruntled and despondent supporters have drifted away and sponsors have turned their backs as the club’s problems have mounted. The club’s supporters’ trust has valiantly tried to assist, raising money and, for a time, even taking over the task of managing the club’s finances in order to pay creditors and allowing the club to continue trading when it was placed into administration via a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA). A creditors’ meeting held on June 15th revealed that the club owed more than £1 million to more than 70 creditors, including players, local businesses and energy companies. The largest sums were owed to current owner, Imraan Ladak, the then acting chairman, George Rolls and shareholder Ray Khan. The CVA proposal stated that “the current owners will waive their right to repayment of their loans under the arrangement.” Promising words followed from Rolls that the CVA would lead to a brighter future for the club and “Kettering Town will prosper again” - despite being dumped out of the Blue Square Bet Premier League and into the Southern League on a parttime basis. That was four months ago and matters

have since gone from bad to worse. Three weeks after the CVA Rolls was ignominiously forced to step down as chairman when he was suspended from football involvement for five years following no less than 3,073 alleged breaches of Football Association betting regulations. He was also fined £10,000 and warned about his future conduct by an independent regulatory commission after an investigation into betting irregularities between 2007-2010 while on Cambridge United’s board and also associated with Weymouth. Ritchie Jeune, who had been part of a take-over bid, became chairman but lasted only a few days in the job, forcing owner, Ladak, to step into the hot seat. Less than a month later, the club - which only three years ago had put up a spirited display in the fourth round of the FA Cup against Fulham - was again in severe financial difficulties, unable to pay player and staff wages. By the beginning of October the crisis was so acute that the club was unable to name a squad for a mid-week league game against Leamington and a few days earlier only ten players turned out in a 7-0 defeat to Bashley, strengthening fears that the club’s 140 year old history was about to end. Not fulfilling a fixture is a cardinal disciplinary offence in the soccer world. Apparently KFC could only muster six players for the Leamington game. To add to an already woeful situation the electricity has been switched off to their Nene Park ground after the club was unable to pay a deposit to a supplier. Also, John Beck’s position as manager has almost certainly come to an end after he was reported to have been escorted from the ground a couple of hours before the kickoff against Concord Rangers. Also, there are questions as to whether £3,000, as part of the CVA, will be paid to avoid a winding up order. Ladak has recently taken to the airwaves saying there are three investors looking to buy the club. But who are these mystery philanthropists? Will they really want to pour their hard earned money down a drain that can’t be plugged? It is very probably they won’t get the chance to be so foolish if the Southern League’s ultimatum is not met by the club to-day - an ultimatum which may be the final catalyst for the life-support machine, which has been keeping the club artificially alive for some many months, being finally switched off.

We can match your skills to a charity in your local area. Visit www.csv.org.uk/ professionals for more information. Sir Jon Shortridge Chairman at CSV Dear Editor It is heart-breaking to learn of the growing problem of kittens and puppies being dumped like rubbish, exposing a disturbing new trend of pets being treated like a disposable commodity. When dogs and cats aren’t neutered, their unwanted litters are often left to suffer. Sadly there are too many unwanted pets and not enough homes for them all, which is why pet charity Blue Cross wants more pets neu-

tered to stop this needless misery. I am especially proud to support the Blue Cross Big Neutering Campaign. The solution is clear: make neutering the norm and stop the needless suffering of unwanted kittens and puppies. I would urge pet owners everywhere to do the same. With your help, we could avoid an animal welfare crisis. Miranda Richardson

Dear Editor THE DEATH OF HANDWRITING. Learning to write is longer an important part of the curriculum it now seems? Texting masks the lack of education and illiteracy,no longer allowing us to see the personality of the writer and the way they form letters which express their personality. Moving from the physical to the digital may well mean the keyboard will outstrip the pen and pencil, and soon signing for a parcel or a cheque or on the bottom of an important contract will be a thing of the past. Writing letters is a secure way of communicating not like today ‘s email. It would seem the Ancient technology is coming to an end, murdered to death by illiterate texters who mask their ignorance of punctuation and spelling with abbreviated rubbish...long live the written word....... Kind regards, Tom Bingham NN17

HPI reminds buyers to watch out for dodgy sellers ‘adjusting’ car clocks The end of October marks the end of British Summer Time and, as we turn the clocks back, used vehicle history expert, HPI, reminds used car buyers to watch out for unscrupulous sellers turning the clocks back on their mileage readings. Known as ‘clocking’, this not only adds significant value to a vehicle, but it could lead to higher maintenance costs, as the vehicle might have more wear and tear than the buyer realises. “At this time of year we’re reminding used car buyers that it’s not just clocks in their houses that can be turned back. Car ‘clocking’ involves altering a vehicle’s mileage and is often done by used car sellers wanting to hike up a car’s value,” says Nicola Johnson, Consumer Services Manager of HPI. “1 in 20 vehicles checked by HPI* show a mileage discrepancy, a figure which has risen 10% in the past five years.” Stepping up the battle against ‘clockers’, HPI recently launched an e-Petition to DirectGov to close down so-called ‘mileage correction firms’ that are believed to be fuelling fraudulent activity. Mileage correction firms claim to offer a service to amend a vehicle’s mileage for legitimate reasons; however a report by the Office of Fair Trading (OfT) concluded that there were very few legitimate reasons for a vehicle’s mileage to be altered, despite there being over 50 companies offering such a service in the UK**. Johnson continues, “Whilst altering

a car’s mileage is not illegal in itself, not declaring that mileage change to a potential buyer is illegal. However, this doesn’t stop dishonest vendors who see clocking as a victimless crime and an easy way to make some extra cash. Of equal concern is the fact that vehicles with tampered mileages may end up missing out on vital servicing actions, which could make the vehicle breakdown, or potentially lead to an accident. Mileage correction firms make it even easier for these criminals, which is why we’ve launched our e-Petition to ask the Government to properly investigate the need for these companies, and help protect the car buying public.” The HPI Check draws upon HPI’s National Mileage Register (NMR), which contains over 150 million mileage records, giving buyers extra assurance that a vehicle checked by HPI has not been clocked. With access to more vehicle information than anybody else, HPI also confirms the vehicle description, whether it is currently recorded as stolen, been written-off by an insurance company, has had a plate change or is subject to outstanding finance. The HPI Check offers a financial guarantee in the event of the information it provides being inaccurate, offering added peace of mind to used car buyers. Johnson concludes, “As the clocks go back this autumn, we urge used car buyers to conduct an HPI Check to ensure the vehicle hasn’t had the miles turned back by clockers. An HPI Check comes

with a mileage check as standard to help buyers avoid paying over the odds for a vehicle that may have more wear and tear than they realise, which could represent a major safety issue.” HPI’S TIPS ON SPOTTING CAR CLOCKING * Check the service history - Check the mileages displayed in the service history and look for service stamps from a genuine dealer. Ideally the service invoices will accompany the service history. If in doubt, contact the servicing dealers and check the mileages they recorded at the time of the service. Speak to the previous keeper - Get in contact with the previous keeper (details can be found on the V5/logbook). They can identify the mileage of the vehicle when they sold it. Make sure this adds up with the current mileage. Trust your judgement - Check who the car was last registered to on the V5. Was it registered as a company car but has done less than 12,000 miles per year? Or is it 15 years old with only 20,000 on the clock? Look for any evidence that indicates clocking. Check the mileage - It has been known for clockers to wind back the mileage when you first view the vehicle and then return it to its original value once the transaction is complete. Make sure you check the mileage is the same when you pick up the vehicle. Look for signs of wear and tear - Does the wear and tear on the vehicle match its mileage? Be careful to look out for signs such as worn seats, steering wheels and other vehicle parts. Also look out for brand new easily replaceable parts; the wear and tear should be consistent with the vehicle’s displayed mileage. Conduct an HPI Check - HPI’s National Mileage Register has over 150 million mileages recorded on it, and can identify mileage discrepancies recorded against the vehicle. *Many of these signs could be innocent, so look for more than one of the above as possible evidence of clocking.

Brentwood, Essex, 23 October, 2012 – Following its movie debut in the UK crime thriller The Sweeney, the all-new Ford Focus ST has taken on its next starring role – this time as an official police patrol vehicle. While the five-door hot hatch used by Flying Squad detectives Regan and Carter was unmarked, this estate version gets the full law enforcement livery. The one-off demonstrator has been developed and engineered at Ford Special Vehicle Preparations (SVP) in Earls Colne, Essex. Equipped as a compact traffic car, it meets the latest National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) standards for fast response vehicles inside and out. The light bar on the roof is all-LED, and the dashboard is fitted with a mobile data terminal (MDT) and screen to illustrate the Focus ST’s versatility for multi-role police use.

The car appeared at the National Association of Police Fleet Managers’ Conference and Blue Light Fleet Exhibition (NAPFM) in Peterborough. Terry Adams, Ford’s Direct Sales Manager for Police, Fire & Ambulance, commented: “With the Ford Focus ST being seen so publicly on cinema screens nationwide, the timing for this ‘official’ version couldn’t be better. At the NAPFM show we displayed the car’s crime-fighting talents to police transport managers and took bookings for demonstrations.” Also available for the public to buy, the all-new Ford Focus ST comes in five vibrant colours including Tangerine Scream and Spirit Blue. The car’s 2.0-litre 250PS EcoBoost engine means it can accelerate from 0-62 mph in just 6.5 seconds and has a top speed of 154 mph. The hatchback is priced from £21,995 with the estate costing from £23,095.

Round-UP

Duston Garage (Bosch Service) Star Award: Northampton Exiles who ended Drayton Grange’s 18-month unbeaten league run. Northants FA Lower Junior Cup: Another UCL giant fell in the Junior Cup, and three more were given a fright by lower ranked opposition. Welford and Corby Locos deserve honourable mentions despite their losing efforts, while James King Blisworth assumed the role of Jack against Woodford United Reserves. On paper the Friday night match between the UCL-based Southern League second string side and the Duston Garage Premier Division leaders, seemed an almighty mismatch based on comparative resources, but the hosts were soon humbled. Matt Curry settled Blisworth nerves with the opener, before Andy Seaton rounded out a convincing win with a brace. Welford faced off against Bugbrooke in a repeat of last season’s semi-final. Mark Edge netted from the spot as the match finished 1-1 at the end of normal time. Joe Ellard added a second in the extra period, but the holders replied with three further goals to progress 4-2. Corby Loco’s defeat was by an even tighter margin against Rushden & Higham. Ben Longhurst netted twice alongside Lee Genner in the original 90 minutes as the game finished 3-3. The UCL nicked it however with a fourth goal in extra time. Earls Barton slipped to a first defeat in all competitions against UCL Division One leaders Sileby Rangers. Kris Hall and Adam Bridgeford both netted for Barton, but the 28-goal strikeforce found the host’s net four times to progress. Orchard Park, Harpole and Volta all found UCL opposition too strong to contend with and bowed out. There was better news against North Bucks sides with Yardley Gobion and Silverstone both being eliminated. Kislingbury put four past Yardley without reply but Stanion found Silverstone much tougher opposition. Wasteful finishing from Bobby Drain saw the sides go onto half-time level. With fifteen minutes to go catastrophic defending allowed Silverstone to take the lead following a corner. Immediately following the restart Stanion were back on terms when Lee Martin fired home. Brian Farrell scored the winner in extra time, beating three defenders on the way through after linking up with Drain. For the three all-Combination ties it was a good day to be on the road, with each game ending in an away victory. Matt Coleman scored twice for Brixworth who eliminated Ringstead 3-1. Jamie Smith went one better for Burton, getting a hat-trick to eliminate derby opponents Ise Lodge. Stuart MacMichael scored twice for Pegasus, but it was not enough as this season’s surprise package Milton won 5-2 in extra time. Duston Garage (Bosch Service) Premier Division: Kettering Nomads recorded only a second win of the season against illness-ravaged Roade. Nomads took the lead in the first half, much against the run of play when a wind assisted free-kick was headed home by Ross Patrick at the far-post. Nomads doubled the advantage ten minutes into the second half when Patrick swept home from the left hand side of the area. Roade came close to cutting the deficit several times before Steve Carroll halved the arrears from the spot. Nomads held out and climbed out of the bottom three for the first time since returning to the top flight. Weldon struggled with conditions against bottom side Heyford, but secured the points with three second half goals from Ben Smith, Sean Fraser and Jay Arnold. Chris Dickens was also amongst the goals as Moulton cruised to victory against Khalsa.

His brace set Moulton on the way to a 4-0 success. Duston Garage (Bosch Service) Division One: Medbourne could not take advantage of the leader’s cup commitments and ascend to the summit after defeat by Wootton. Dom Williams netted for the Leicestershire side for which victory would guarantee top spot. Goals from Jamie Ellis, Joe Church, and Michael Ryan dented such lofty ambitions. Stanwick too failed to capitalise on the opportunity to climb the table after drawing with Denton. James Willmott scored for Stanwick but Rosco Cook equalised for Denton. Corby Everards did climb the table following a convincing win over struggling Gretton. Pete Callan and Steve Millar grabbed a hat-trick apiece as Everards put eight past Gretton. George Donnelly got in on the action putting one past his former club. Rothenberger Tools Division Two: The curse of top spot remains alive and well as Halloween approaches with Wollaston being unable to hang on again. Wilby toppled the leaders after a 4-2 derby victory. Lee Woolman and Martin Burse scored for the Vics, but Paul Southey fired home for Wilby, before Shane Hawkes hit a treble to seal the win. The reverse allowed Daventry Comms to ascend to first place. Comms made short work of previously hard-to-beat Rising Sun, doubling the host’s goals conceded total for the season in the nap success. Redstar returned to winning ways, ending a run of four games without a victory by pounding Clipston 5-1. Jamie Farrell got the first before George MacKay went goal crazy with four. Duston Garage (Bosch Service) Division Three: The Drayton Grange juggernaut was halted by Exiles. Sam Savage scored the only goal of the game to give the Northamptonbased side victory. The win ended Drayton Grange’s superb unbeaten run, and was the first league defeat since May 2011! Weedon were best placed to capitalise on any potential reverse for the leaders and made no mistake in taking the chance when it came. Shane Richardson found the net for opponents Great Doddington, but Ben Drinkwater struck twice to seal the win. Weedon move level on points with Drayton who remain on top by virtue of goal difference. Gary Broadway also scored twice for Ferrers but it proved in vain as Grange Park emerged 3-2 winners. Walgrave leapfrogged Ferrers in the table after a routine win away at Titchmarsh. Tommy Horsley, Jacob Garland, and Sam Bastin were all on the scoresheet for Walgrave. SPA slumped to a fourth successive defeat after going down 3-1 to FC Higham. Sam Scarman had put the Northampton side ahead but a Tom Martin hat-trick ripped the heart out of the strugglers. Gleneagles too languish at the wrong end of the table, but ended a run of successive defeats by taking a point from the tie with West Haddon. Shomat Choudhury was the West Haddon scorer in the draw. Duston Garage (Bosch Service) Division Four: All of a sudden Wilbarston have rediscovered the winning habit, making it two in a row after defeating Corby United. Marek Dybek scored three of the goals in the 6-1 win, while an own goal compounded the host’s misery. Like rivals United, Corby Kingswood have yet to record a win this season, and defeat against the leaders Borough Alliance extends that run to seven games. Alex Williams is fast becoming a fixture on the results sheet with both goals in Hellenic’s narrow 3-2 defeat to AFC Rothwell. With his goalscoring exploits so far, it can only be a matter of time before teams from the higher levels come hunting for his signature. Kettering Park Rover’s win over Albion Vikings was very much the tale

held second placed Corby Locos to a draw, Darren Taylor, Taylor Wilson and Aaron Bell all netting. Dan Barker put leaders Stanion on the way to a sixth successive league win with a hat-trick against Bugbrooke ‘B’. Indeed a mixed day for the top three was completed when Weldon ‘A’ lost to Kislingbury. Kislingbury scored twice before half time and added a third just after the restart. The Weldon fight back came to late to make any real difference. Pete Brennan scored on 85 minutes to reduce the arrears, and James Clark added a second in stoppage time. The clock ticked down however and Kislingbury held on. Old Grammarians climbed above Bugbrooke after defeating Medbourne. Duston Garage (Great Wall Cars) Reserve Division Two: Redstar produced a second successive 6-0 win to topple leaders Spratton. Lee McEwen

was the standout scorer picking up half of the goals himself. Stanwick and Wollaston both moved ahead of Spratton following respective victories over Volta and Wilby. Seven games in and the ‘goals against’ column makes sorry ready for bottom side Hellenic. James Blackwell scored five for Harborough ‘A’ in the 8-0 win, that takes the tally conceded to 48 so far. Richard Charlton was the Higham Town hero, scoring twice in the win over West Haddon. His goals were crucial in ending a run of four successive home defeats for the Lancaster Park outfit.

SPLAT: Competitors can paint . . . not the town but themselves red at the new arena!

AS sports go, laser tag is perhaps recognised as being more of a fun leisure pursuit for stag parties and boys’ awaydays than a seriously competitive past-time. But there’s no doubting it has a great following. And now local adrenaline junkies won’t have too far to go to get their kicks: Alpha Bravo UK opened to the public this week in Corby. The new venture will also be offering birthday parties, hen and stag parties and corporate team-building days. There is also a tie-up with

schools and community groups planned for the New Year. This is stage one of the project and the first of three arenas opening : Alpha Bravo is expanding its activities and a state-of the-art Karting track opens in December. In the final minute, wing forward Shaun Mackie scored under the posts from a rolling maul to level the score 22 each,. With the last kick of the match, Tom Mair landed the conversion for Wellingborough to record their sec-

Wellingborough dominated the second half but neither side was able to trouble the scorers, with the full-time score 18-6 to the visitors; the home side’s score coming from two Tom Mair penalties. Both the seconds and thirds lost their away games that weekend and the u18 girls lost to Worcester, but there was an impressive home win for the u15 girls 39-10 against Melbourne (Leicestershire).

Diamonds’ sparkle fades > FOOTBALL

MANAGER Mark Starmer will be slightly disappointed with his AFC Rushden & Diamonds side as they fell to a 4-1 defeat against Eynesbury Rovers, following a hard fought 1-1 draw with Burton Park Wanderers. In-form Jack Wisniewski had given Diamonds a first-half lead against Wanderers. But a secondhalf equaliser from Kevin Fox and some spectacular goalkeeping from Liam Fox ensured the game would end in a draw. The harder news for fans came this weekend with a 4-1 loss to Eynesbury. A combination of clinical finishing by the hosts and a poor team performance from AFC Rushden & Diamonds saw them lose their unbeaten league record. Lee Bassett bagged a hat-trick for the home side. Diamonds’ manager Mark Starmer gave Alex Deakin his first start in a league game for the club, in the absence of Aynsley McDonald, with Chris Hope taking over the captain’s armband. Young keeper Domenico Roggero was brought in to take a place on the bench as goalkeeper cover. The first minutes of the game saw the Diamonds pushing forwards but Jake Newman was struggling to read the home offside track, so the threats were quickly snuffed out. Af-

ter ten minutes, the Diamonds went behind to what looked like classic wing-play on the left between Ducket and Freshwater – then a wellmeasured cross from Freshwater on the left was met by the head of Lee Bassett to open the scoring. The second half started with some promise that the Diamonds might get back into the game, but Jake Newman was unable to take advantage of a defence-splitting pass as he seemed to hesitate and allow a defender to catch him and get in a challenge that forced him to shoot over. As in the first half, with about ten minutes on the clock, the hosts scored their second through Lee Bassett, with James Ducket again involved in the build-up on the left. For the next ten minutes, the Diamonds had their best spell of the game, although many of their moves broke down without a real threat on goal until a neat interchange between Ellwood and McBride saw keeper Wale concede a corner as he tipped McBride’s shot around the post. After having wasted several dead-ball opportunities earlier with short-corner and free-kick moves that failed to get the ball into the danger area, the Diamonds were finally able to take advantage of a clear height advantage over their hosts. The corner from Joe Merrill was headed home by Jake Newman as Chris Hope and Alex Deakin kept

FOX IN THE BOX: Wanderers keeper Liam Fox ensures Diamonds only get a point. other defenders occupied. For a while, it looked like the Diamonds would get something from the game, as Ellwood set up Newman for another clear run into the area, but the striker was caught before getting in a clean strike. Joe Merrill and Jack Wisniewski were finally getting some joy on the right, but a couple of dangerous looking

crosses were well dealt with. The Diamonds were preparing Jake Gillingwater to replace Sam Brown, but just before the move could be made, the Diamonds defender needed to deal with a looping ball forward with Lee Bassett bearing down on him in the centre of the field. But his weak header towards Shorunmu was pounced on

by Bassett who neatly chipped the ball over the advancing keeper and into the net. Any thought that the Diamonds might have a second attempt at staging a fightback were ended as Tom Coles got ahead of Alex Deakin to score the fourth Eynesbury goal, heading home a cross from the right.

Gem of a deal for goalies > FOOTBALL AFC Rushden & Diamonds have announced a commercial partnership with KA Goalkeeping. KA Goalkeeping was founded by former Partick Thistle, Accrington Stanley, Rochdale, Grimsby and current Airdrie United goalkeeper, Kenny Arthur, in 2006, to provide a bespoke range of goalkeeping gloves. Kenny will provide goalkeep-

ing gloves for all AFC Rushden & Diamonds goalkeepers – from age five all the way to the first team at a special sponsorship rate. KA is set to launch an addition to the junior collection of gloves, seeing the high spec of the TCG+ Elite adult model, all the way down to size two. This will no doubt be good news for the AFC Rushden & Diamonds Academy and Community youth teams. The idea behind the addi-

tion to junior collection is that goalkeepers of any age can now develop using gloves to the exact specification of the full size adult range. Chairman Ralph Burditt was delighted with the tie-up. He said: “We are very pleased to have agreed this deal with KA and with the benefits that it offers to all the goalkeepers within our club. “When I first spoke to Kenny about the possibility of KA sponsoring AFC Rushden & Diamonds I was very keen that the young players within our youth set-up would get something from the deal. “Fortunately, the focus on youth development is a passion that he shares and hence no convincing was necessary. “KA’s gloves are absolutely top-

notch and being able to provide our keepers with access to the same gloves worn by many top professionals such as Joe Lewis (Cardiff) and Neil Alexander (Rangers), at a price they can afford, is something which can only help their development.” Kenny Arthur said: “We are delighted to form a partnership with AFC Rushden and Diamonds. During my playing career I played against Rushden before the unfortunate financial situation unfolded. “We are excited to play some small part in helping the club rise again through the leagues, while at the same time supporting the clubs’ goalkeeping development at grass routes level.”
