Police appeal to our readers for information

Cat killed in horror firework attack

POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a cat was blown up by a firework in a horrific incident in Wellingborough. They described the animal’s death as “an unbelievably cruel act” and said those that witnessed it were “very distressed”. Police were called to Shelley Road after a woman and her daughter came across the cat with a firework attached to it, which then exploded - resulting in the animal’s immediate death. The incident took place on Saturday November 10 at about 6.05pm. The officer investigating the incident, PC Mark Jones, said: “This is an unbelievably cruel act and we are very keen to hear from anybody who has any information which will lead to the identification of the perpetrators. “Not only was it horrific for the poor animal involved, the witnesses and owners of the cat are understandably very distressed. “I urge anybody with any information to get in touch so that we can identify and deal with whoever is responsible for this horrible act. “Contact me on 101 and ask for Wellingborough SCT, or email me via our website. All contact will be strictly confidential.” Witnesses to this incident, or anyone with information, should call Northamptonshire Police on 101 - alternatively, information can be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Local photographer Lisa Fry captured this poignant moment, when young Taylan Hacking paused in silent tribute to fallen war heroes, before crowds joined him at a Remembrance Day ceremony in Raunds.

He then had 25 radiotherapy and chemotherapy sessions in April to shrink his rectal tumour so that it could be operated on and a date was set aside for the operation to remove this and the right kidney in one session. He said: “Mr El-Rabaa explained the keyhole technique to me and it seemed to be a much better option than having two separate major operations. “It was still a very major operation and I was on the table for 13 hours but my recovery was amazingly fast. I was out of hospital in seven days. The pain I had was reduced very significantly and clearly not to be operated on was not an option as I would have died.”

Thousands of bus passes set to expire > County WITH thousands of concessionary bus passes approaching their expiration date, Northamptonshire County Council is urging people to plan ahead to avoid any delay on re-issues. Following the introduction of the over-60s national concessionary bus pass scheme back in 2008, it is now expected that around 50,000 passes will expire on the same date 31st March 2013. To help manage the renewal process, the county council is putting in place a monthly schedule for any-

one whose concessionary bus pass will expire at the end of March next year. People should visit a library to renew their pass during the month allocated to their surname: ● November – surnames starting with A to E ● December – surnames starting with F to J ● January – surnames starting with K to O ● February – surnames starting with P to T ● March – surnames starting with U to Z Cabinet member for customer and community services, Councillor Heather Smith said: “With up to

50,000 concessionary bus passes due to expire on the same date, it would be impossible for library staff to process that many applications at the same time. “Instead, we have introduced a monthly schedule for passengers to visit their local library and renew their bus pass ahead of the expiration date. “By taking this phased approach, we can help avoid any delays or disappointment for customers and make sure the renewal process runs as smoothly as possible.” For more information, visit: www.northamptonshire.gov. uk/concessionarybuspass

Don’t leave elderly isolated > County CHARITY Action on Hearing Loss is urging people to ensure elderly relatives with hearing loss don’t face ‘unnecessary neglect and devastating isolation’ in care or nursing homes. The charity is advising people looking at a home for their loved ones to check what procedures are in place to fully support residents with hearing loss. The call follows the publication of Action on Hearing Loss’s new report ‘A World of Silence’ which presents the impact of failing to support care home residents with hearing loss – estimated to total 250,000 in England. to check whether homes they are considering have clear procedures in place to assess, record and manage residents’ hearing loss and ensure their communication needs are included in personal care plans. Chief executive of Action on Hearing Loss, Paul Breckell, said: “When people are selecting a care home for a loved one with hearing loss, it’s important to make an informed choice by checking exactly what processes and support is available to meet the individual needs of residents who are deaf or hard of hearing. “It doesn’t matter how well a care home is run, if residents find themselves locked in an isolated world where they miss out on everyday sounds and conversation because their hearing loss isn’t adequately supported.”

VOTERS across Northamptonshire are being urged to go to the polls tomorrow to elect the county’s new Police and Crime Commissioner. But there are fears that turnout for the elections for the new posts could be the lowest of any national poll in British history. Think tank Policy Exchange believes failure to communicate the concept of elected police chiefs will lead to people staying at home – with just 15 per cent bothering to cast their vote. The turn-out in Northamptonshire could be better than in other parts of the country as the vote is taking place on the same day as the Corby by-election. Northamptonshire’s election cam-

paign made national headlines when it was revealed Labour Party candidate Lee Baron had a conviction for a minor offence dating back 22 years that would prevent him from taking up the position. Labour has withdrawn its support for Lee Barron at his request but remains on tomorrow’s ballot paper as a candidate because his withdrawal came too late.

The other police election candidates are: ● Jim MacArthur, UKIP. A former flight lieutenant in the RAF Police, senior executive with P&O and special constable ● John Norrie, Independent. Businessman and, a former independent member of the Northamptonshire Police Authority

Get set for a Christmas cracker! > Wellingborough WELLINGBOROUGH will be transformed into a winter wonderland on November 24 as the town’s Christmas lights are officially switched on during a night of festive fun. Live music and dancing, competitions and family attractions will all take place in a snow-covered part of Market Street, before Father Christmas arrives for a special appearance on a sleigh pulled by reindeer. As the lights are switched on, a firework display will light up the sky over the town centre. The big event, which has been organised by Wellingborough Council and Wellingborough’s Business Improvement District (BID) will kick off at 3pm on the main stage in Market Street, near to McDonald’s. Mark and Liz from Connect FM’s breakfast show will host the celebration and introduce a packed afternoon of entertainment, including performances from local school children. One lucky child will win the opportunity to help switch on the lights. Father Christmas, helped by Wellingborough Rotary Club and two real reindeer, will arrive in his sleigh to meet the children and give out entry forms for the competition. At 6pm, the Mayor of Wellingborough,

Cllr Ken Harrington, will be joined on stage by Father Christmas and the competition winner to switch on the lights. Spectacular fireworks, provided by the BID, will be set off from the roof of the town’s Swansgate Centre as the celebration comes to a close. Councillor Tim Allebone, chairman of Wellingborough Council’s development committee, said: “We are really looking forward to the event. The lights give the town a real lift and get people into the Christmas spirit. “By teaming up with the BID we can put on a great show that people will really enjoy, but on a low budget. We’re starting the festivities early so that everyone can get some Christmas shopping in, which will give the town centre traders an extra boost.” John Cable, Business Improvement manager at the Wellingborough BID, said: “The BID is really excited about the activity we have arranged for the Christmas lights switch on. It should make this a not-to-miss family event.” The BID will also be launching its Christmas shopping competition on the lights evening, with a prize fund of £5,000 of shopping vouchers to be won. Every time people spend £10 in a Wellingborough business in the BID area they will be entered into the draw for a chance to win one of 12 voucher prizes, with the top prize of £1,500.

RECKLESS ‘pranksters’ putting fireworks through letterboxes have been warned they are putting the lives of families at risk. In the past month, there have been six incidents involving fireworks across Northamptonshire, including two in Wellingborough. Police and fire chiefs described two of the incidents earlier this month – in Compton Road, Wellingborough and Wareham Green, Corby – as “the most serious fires to date”.

LOCAL packaging specialists, New Vision Packaging has given Waitrose an early Christmas present by completing work on its own-brand festive confectionery offering. It is the seventh consecutive year that the Kettering-based firm has worked alongside the retailer. Once again, New Vision Packaging was tasked with creating the structural packaging for the retailer’s core range, which includes such products as Sugared Almonds and Chocolate Brazils. This was also the first year New Vision was appointed to work on the premium range, too – a Belgium chocolate assortment and a collection of coffee flavoured chocolates. New Vision completed the contract in five months, with products now due to be rolled out in Waitrose stores.

MEMBERS of an East Northants business networking group which ploughs its proceeds into supporting Thrapston’s sports facilities are celebrating its fifth anniversary. Almost 30 entrepreneurs and representatives from in and around Thrapston blew the candles out on a birthday cake to mark the occasion at a meeting of Business in the Community last month, at the town’s The Bridge Hotel, which also supports the business group. The network is attended by town councillors and regularly has presentations from its business members and community groups. It supports the town’s sports facilities and in the past has paid for sheltered seating as well as the upkeep of the playing fields. Group founder and organiser Mark Brown, a director of DATS Print Services, said: “We offer an excellent opportunity for networking within Thrapston, providing many businesses in and around the town with a platform to raise their profile and gain new business contacts.” Councillor Roy Jakeman, who attends every meeting, said: “They are different from most business networking groups where the focus is simply on generating business leads. At the town council, we support the group because it brings local businesses together and tries to make a difference to the town.” There was a presentation on the Thrapston Community Plan at the last meeting, where members were encouraged to speak out

Stephen Shortland, managing director at New Vision Packaging, said: “We have a long-standing relationship with Waitrose and they’ve been with us since the company started in 2006. It’s rewarding that they come back to us year after year and that we’re now in a position to handle the premium range, too. “You couldn’t really ask for a better result from one of the UK’s leading retailers.”

EXTRA ChristmasTime - Showbiz and Entertainment Fun from Heart 96.6 in Northamptonshire. IT’S INCREDIBLE to think that Dawn French has been making people laugh for thirty years! We know her best from TV Shows like French and Saunders, and The Vicar of Dibley, but she is now almost as well known for her writing! We had a fantastic chat with Dawn this week as she celebrated the release of her second novel ‘Oh Dear Silvia’, following the massive success of her first number 1 best selling novel ‘A Tiny Bit Marvelous’. We began by introducing her as the ‘lovely’ Dawn French, but the morning we spoke to her on Heart Breakfast, she told us she had left the lovely Dawn French at home! “I brought the horrible Dawn French and left the nice one at home in Cornwall today. I do find it hard to leave there these days. I came up to London to do a sitcom last year and it was the first time I’d been away, and I knew I would be away for three months, and as I drove up the drive I had a tear in my eye… I just know I belong there now”. It was lovely to hear how settled she had become in the Cornish Countryside. We wanted to know all about her new novel… and Stuart suggested that everyone has a novel in them… Dawn thought that sounded a bit painful. So moving swiftly on, we asked about her plans for 2013. “I’m doing a famous five film, and radio thing with Jennifer Saunders and I’m going on tour with a one women show… a bit of dressing up and showing off”. We think that sounds fab, watch out for it coming to Northamptonshire. Finally, we revealed that Dawn has recently been voted the UK’s favourite picnic partner, so we wanted to know which she would chose, a perfect date or a perfect food. We began with Daniel Craig vs. Chocolate Cake… “Chocolate cake every time, don’t even bother, there’s no competition… Chocolate cake is joy”… So how about David Tennent vs. Chicken and Leek pie…. “PIE! Pie is the winner, yeah Pie”. Finally Stuart Miles vs. Celery… “Stuart Miles, celery is my enemy”. Check out our interview with Dawn in full at heart.co.uk

CHOCOLATE CAKE Daniel Craig vs. Chocolate Cake… “Chocolate cake every time, don’t even bother, there’s no competition… Chocolate cake is joy”

Northants/Leicestershire four-piece The Incidents describe themselves as ‘a shot in the arm for rock ‘n’ roll’. Having formed a few years ago, bonded by a ‘hazy night in Kettering’, they now insist to have ‘awesome super powers and great haircuts’ which they use to claw back rock music from those who do not. However bizarre this may sound, four ‘bratty Midlands lads making a tuneful of racket’ can usually only result in a good thing. Throwing in influences ranging from The Smiths to The Ramones, the band ‘fight crime and songs in excess of five minutes (except The Smiths’ ones)’. “Ello, ello, ello what have we got here then?” D DAY HAS ARRIVED….it’s time to nip down to your local voting station and put your cross against your preferred candidate in the most important election in years. No, I am not referring to the election of your next Member of Parliament for Corby and East Northamptonshire. Whoever takes over from fly-away incumbent Louise Mensch will make little difference to how the country is run and the economic travails we all face. On the other hand your vote for the man (there aren’t any women on the ballot sheet!) who will, at great expense, overlord law and order in Northamptonshire might be one of the most important decisions local voters will ever make. The election of 41 police commissioners up and down the country tomorrow could transform policing in the UK for years to come. In other words this American style leap into the unknown could be the answer to law and order problems the public has craved or be as effective as a chocolate teapot. Despite a last minute publicity surge by the Home Office to whip-up public interest, few people really understand why such appointments are necessary and, worse still, have little knowledge of the candidates and what each stands for and how they are going to conduct themselves in the new role. The biggest question is how will they interact with chief constables? Will they adopt the approach of quiet watchdog or attack dog, forcing decisions like privatization of large sections of policing. The majority of the 192 candidates (only 35 are women) represent one of the major political parties. Just over a quarter claim to be “independent,” with 32 serving or retired police officers, 16 magistrates and 90 local councillors hoping to anointed with the title of Police and Crime Commissioner. Unfortunately, the job description is rather hazily defined for a position paying up to £100,000 a year (the salary in Northamptonshire is £75,000) and encompassing large areas with millions of people who won’t necessarily identify with each others crime problems. The government, in its wisdom, decided that it would not give candidates a free mail-shot to voters because it would costs £35 million on top of the £75 million bill being spent holding the elections. This has resulted in many candidates having to rely on getting their message across via the internet. Few have been as fortunate as Mervyn Barrett, the independent candidate for Leicestershire, who has bombarded local voters with expensive leaflets, free DVDs and full page newspaper adverts. Appar-

ently, he is backed financially by an organisation called The Fund for the American Century, a US lobbyist and companies pushing for more privatisation. Even former commissioners of the Met police in London have differing opinions on the appointment of PCCs. Sir Ian Blair is urging people to boycott the election as it will create tensions, while Sir Paul Stephenson takes the opposite view and believes it will make the police generally more accountable. More worrying for chief constables is that not many people will bother to vote. Some estimates have put the turnout as low as 15%. So, if you want to have a say in formulating law and order in the future get down to the polling stations and place your cross on the ballot sheet. But be careful who you vote for; remember you and the candidate is each plunging into uncharted waters. Neither you, nor the winner, know precisely what the job entails. Yes, lots of talk about setting budgets and the ability to fire chief constables, but will the new position of police czar really change anything? It appears Northamptonshire police force is already trying to get ahead of the game with a new appointment within the force’s Corporate Services senior management team at a salary up to £76,000. With the title of Head of Services Transformation the job description states: “You will manage key strategic relationships including the Police and Crime Commissioner…..” giving the impression that the force’s hierarchy is creating a protective buffer before the new PCC incumbent has even found his office. All the candidates have criticised the creation of this “unique role” just days before one of them is to be elected and at a time when the force has to find savings of £4 million. An important footnote: On the ballot sheet is the name of Lee Barron, representing Labour. If you put a cross against his name it will be a waste. Mr Barron was forced to withdraw from the election after voting papers were printed following his disclosure that, 22 years ago at the age of 19, he was fined £20 for a minor offence. No one with any criminal conviction, however insignificant or however long ago, is allowed to become PCC. The other local candidates are: John Norrie (Ind), a former member of Northamptonshire Police Authority. Adam Simmonds (Cons), a senior official with Northamptonshire County Council. Jim MacArthur (Ukip), ex RAF officer and security chief for major companies. Paul Varnsverry (Lib Dem), deputy leader of Northampton Borough Council.

MAHMOUD KAFFASH: Looking for a job

After the sudden closure of three centres staff are still without wages.

THE OWNER of the government supported training centre in Kettering, which has been forced to suddenly close following an investigation into irregularities, has hit back saying he is “baffled and disgusted.” Mahmoud Kaffash, 53, who set up In Business Training (UK) Ltd in October 2008, operated three centres, in Tresham Street, Kettering, Bromham Road, Bedford and a third in Wigston. The centres ran courses to improve skills in maths, English, IT and business methods provided by learndirect, under a government funded scheme to help long term unemployed back into work. Last night Mr Kaffash told the Extra: “I am sick and gutted by what has happened. I did everything I could to keep the business going, including offering to resign as a director and handing the business over to the staff to run.” Three weeks ago staff arrived to find the three offices closed and computer equipment moved from the Kettering office. Days earlier staff had been interviewed at a local hotel by senior officials of learndirect and questioned about the running of the operation. The investigation centred on procedures, the awarding of course certificates and if trainees had passed courses and modules. A spokesman for learndirect at the time said the company was waiting to talk to Mr Kaffash and had been trying to minimise the disruption to learners. Last night Mr Kaffash said he was proud of the work and help his company had given to thousands of people who had passed courses at his centres over the last six years. “The business was flourishing. I had just opened a new learning centre in Wigston. In the time the business has been operating we have helped between six and seven thousand people gain skills and find jobs. “I have hundreds of testimonials from people who were unemployed for a long time and have now been able to turn their lives around because of the help, guidance

and confidence we have provided via the comprehensive courses we ran. “I am baffled, sick and gutted by what has happened. I still have no idea why learndirect pulled the plug. When learndirect officials said they were concerned about irregularities I offered to stand down as a director and hand the running of the business over to three senior employees, but learndirect was not interested. “I have asked for meetings with learndirect officials in an effort to get the centres up and running again, even without my involvement. The decision to pull the plug by learndirect has put 15 people I employed out of work just before Christmas and left unemployed people we were trying to help in the lurch. I did my best to try and stop this fiasco. We have lost all the hard work we have done over the years.” Mr Kaffash, who has lived in the UK for 33 years and is a British citizen, claimed that his centres provided excellent courses. “We had a reputation second to none for the quality of our courses and teaching. We were considered by many to be one of the best centres in the country. Ours was a one-stop-shop operation. Not only did we train people, but we had job and enterprise clubs and other facilities linked to industry and local commerce, placing people in work. We provided the whole package assisting people who had been out of work for a long time get a job and back on their feet. People preferred to come to us because we were good.” Mr Kaffash added that he kept in touch with the 15 former members of his staff by e-mail, but admitted that they had not been paid in November as he had promised. “I am out of work and looking for a job, just like everyone else,” he said. “I didn’t want the staff to lose their jobs. I cared for them. Some had been with me for a long time. I suggested to learndirect that the staff run the business on probation for six months, but they weren’t interested. This has been a very sad episode, but I am not in control anymore.”

Round-UP

Duston Garage (Bosch Service) Star Award: Clipston who recorded a first win of the season after eight attempts Northants FA Lower Junior Cup: Northampton Spencer Reserves made short work of Yardley United to move into the third round of the competition. Jordan Richards, Chris Norman and Lee Clack all found the net to eliminate the last remaining Town League side. Tougher opposition awaits in round three with Spencer making the trip to UCL side ON Chenecks Reserves. Northants FA Area Cup: Eight sides faced external opposition with only two sides failing to progress. Duston Garage Reserve Premier Division leaders Bugbrooke ‘A’ were by far and away the biggest winners. The return trip along the A5 was miserable for visiting North Bucks outfit Yardley Gobion after the rampant Badgers ran in eleven goals. Both FC Titchmarsh and AFC Rothwell made the lengthy trips out to Syresham and Deanshanger respectively, and recorded wins that end North Bucks interest in the competition for another season. Town League sides JLB and Upper Mounts both found Combination opposition too strong. Spratton Reserves cruised to victory, scoring six against the Mounts, while JLB fell to Heyford Reserves. Harleigh East, Alex Marlow, and Paul McIntyre all found the target to bring some cheer to the beleaguered club. Craig Hall scored twice for Corby Redstar Reserves in the 3-1 win over Banbury League side Woodford ‘B’. Should Corby Albion Vikings overcome Town League opposition next week then the race for the Area Cup will be between the Northants Combination and the Peterborough League. Indeed it was to Peterborough League opposition that both Kislingbury Reserves and ON Chenecks ‘A’ succumbed. Kislingbury lost out to Wittering Harriers while Chenecks went out away at Peterborough Giants. The fixture computer threw up two derby ties, both of which ended in the favour of the lower ranked sides. Corby United hosted Stanion Reserves and it was the second-string side who romped to a massive victory. Mark Watson was the pick of the scorers with three goals, while teammates Luke McAuley, Dan Barker and Lee Greig added two apiece as the visitors fired in eleven times. Stanwick Reserves did not record such a high margin but still managed to upset neighbours Higham Town. Darrell Smith was the hero, netting a crucial third goal to see the second-string through 3-2. In the three remaining all-Combination ties Old Grammarians Reserves produced a third upset result, overcoming Desborough & Rothwell United. Martin Tamplin and Danny Moroianu netted for the hosts, but an own goal proved the winner for the Reserve Division One side. Earls Barton Reserves smashed eight goals past Orchard Park Reserves. Nick Charlton scored twice, with Leon Gavin and Jordan Hogden both picking up doubles. An own-goal sealed a miserable day for the Kettering side. Dan Brown scored twice for West Haddon Reserves and an Edward Harman strike forced overtime in the clash with Wollaston Reserves. Despite these goal-scoring exploits it was Wollaston who progresses with a penalty shoot-out victory. Duston Garage (Bosch Service) Premier Division Cup: Based on current form and league positions, three of the quarter final ties produced surprise results, with Moulton the only top six side to reach the semi-finals. Coming off the back of a run of three league wins and scoring thirteen goals in the process Moulton would rightly have been confident of getting a result against holders and seventh-placed Harpole. For eighty minutes however neither

side could break the deadlock, but the final ten produced four goals. Poor defending allowed Moulton to open the scoring through Adey Redmond before Liam Butcher immediately struck back for Harpole. The game became and end-to-end affair with Redmond converting two further chances to seal his hat-trick and a semi-final berth for his side. Milton had topped the league earlier this season albeit briefly, and were drawn against Ringstead who have lost the last five league games. With form like that Milton were expected by many to progress, but instead crashed out. Lee Bradley scored twice for the hosts, but Ringstead fired in five times with Danny Jackson scoring a hattrick. Despite taking an early lead Brixworth slumped to their heaviest home defeat since September2007 against Weldon. Three first half goals from Ben Smith, Paul Simpson and Sean Fraser, the first coming two minutes after Brixworth’s opener, put Weldon in control of the game. The visitors added two more goals in the second period to hand Brixworth a 5-3 defeat. Stanion Quantum Print have been a force to be reckoned with this term scoring 26 goals in all competitions thus far. The division’s newcomers travelled to face Roade, a side already heavily beaten when the sides met in the Junior Cup earlier this season. Early momentum from Stanion suggested that a repeat could be on the cards, but the lack of a killer touch was to prove costly. Roade served the opposition a statement of intent when Andrew Watts first saw a point-blank header miraculously saved, before the rebound was blazed over. Minute later Stanion provided Roade the opportunity to score from twelve yards when Watts was bundled over in the area. Steve Carroll converted the penalty to give Roade a first half lead. Two quick-fire goals after the restart rocked the visitors and put Roade into a commanding position. Zach Pugh netted with a cool finish before Watts got the goal his performance deserved. Ed Reece capped the shock win with a fourth goal on 70 minutes. Duston Garage (Bosch Service) Premier Division: Blisworth’s lead at the top of the table extended to five points with a second victory over Nomads, thanks to Chris Currey’s decisive goal. His strike gave Blisworth the slimmest of advantages in the 4-3 win. Welford meanwhile climbed two places with victory over Khalsa. Craig Cassidy netted twice in the 4-0 win. Duston Garage (Bosch Service) Division One Cup: Alex Patrick scored the Wootton goal that ensured the tie with Earls Barton needed an extra half hour to settle. In the end it was to be Barton’s day, as they found an extra time winner. Duston Garage (Bosch Service) Division One: After the rotten start that Gretton endured conceding 39 goals in the opening six games, securing a point from the tie with Burton was a welcome positive, particularly given that the same opposition had reached a record 11-1 win earlier in the season. Shain MacAlindon netted for Gretton to cancel out Lewis McIntyre’s strike. Ise Lodge ended a run of three straight defeats with a derby victory over Orchard Park. Mark Northover scored four of the five Ise goals. Denton bounced back from last week’s narrow defeat to Kislingbury with victory over Volta. Liam Downes opened the scoring in what was to be Denton’s first win in three matches. Rothenberger Tools Division Two: Right now, last week’s win seems to be the aberration for Corby Redstar, as the poor form returned with a vengeance. Derby opponents Corby Eagles took full advantage of Redstar’s apparent weakness scoring six times. Coin Hutchison was the pick of the scorers with a treble. Daventry Comms managed to hold onto top spot for a second successive week, possibly putting an end to the hot-potato that has characterised it thus far. A 4-1 win over Spratton

ensured that the Daventry side held onto pole position and increased the goal difference advantage over Wollaston. The Vics were also winners, seeing off Strip Mills 3-1 and remain level on points with the leaders. Clipston meanwhile moved away from the bottom two after securing a first win in eight attempts. Duston Garage (Bosch Service) Division Three Cup: Exiles went goal-crazy in the victory against struggling Great Doddington. Adam Russell was the pick of the scorers with a treble as the Northampton side smashed in seven goals. For Doddington, the defeat now means that without the distraction of cup football all efforts can be focussed on league survival. The Higham Ferrers derby between Ferrers and FC Higham ended in the latter’s favour. Gary Broadway and Adam Walsh both scored for Ferrers, but Tom Martin’s brace and a Danny Bird finish left the hosts contemplating league cup disappointment for the second successive season. James Brooks struck a crucial third goal for newboys Grange Park to ensure

a semi-final berth at the first time of asking. Jed Brennan had given Drayton Grange the lead before Grange Park equalised and then took the lead themselves. An own goal restored parity but Brooks was to have the final say. Victorious in the Division Four cup final last season, Walgrave reached the semi-finals for the second successive year following a 4-1 win over Division Three leaders Weedon. Duston Garage (Bosch Service) Division Three: West Haddon sealed a first win in four games following a 4-3 victory at FC Titchmarsh. SPA recorded a first win since the opening day by defeating basement side Gleneagles 4-0. Nicky Musgrove opened SPA’s account. Duston Garage (Bosch Service) Division Four: The Borough Alliance juggernaut shows no sign of stopping after an eighth win of the season, this time against Hellenic Fisher. motion at the first attempt. Rikki Langley scored twice for Park Rovers to propel his side into second place, deposing opponents Corby Ravens in the process. Wilbarston’s turnaround in form continues with a third successive league win over Kingswood. Duston Garage (Great Wall Cars) Reserve Premier Division Cup: Alex Weynforth scored twice for Blisworth to set up a 5-3 win over Brixworth. took control of the game, and after 29 minutes Ben Morgan netted his second. He received the ball towards the edge of the area, and although his first touch didn’t look 100% in control, it took him past his marker and allowed him to execute a neat chip over keeper Drury and into the net off the underside of the bar. Three minutes later the Diamonds repeated their midweek feat by netting their third goal before the break, and this time it was Jake Newman who neatly controlled a long ball as he broke clear off the static central defenders, and as keeper Drury tried to recover from a slip he was able to slot home the third.

Further chances fell to Chris Hope, Jamie Gilsenan and Matt Gearing before the half-time whistle. The second half initially followed the pattern of the game against Raunds, where the Diamonds didn’t often threaten to increase their lead, and gradually the visitors recovered their lost confidence. Sam Brown conceded a free kick for hand-ball near the centre circle, and from the resulting free-kick Billy Stubbs forced a great save from Quincy Shorunmu. The resultant corner saw an effort hit Shorunmu in the face, but the threat was averted. At the other end Jake Newman made a great

run that left three defenders in his wake, but he fired over the bar. With the half otherwise uneventful, the Diamonds started to make their substitutions, and Alex McDonald was given his league debut with four minutes left, and was unfortunate to be called into action before he had time to settle, with the ball breaking to Martin Wormall who hit an unstoppable shot from 25 yards into the top right hand corner of the net. As the game entered added time, Lee Shaw made another of the surging runs he had made throughout the game and was able to collect a pass and fire past Shorunmu.

Colts back in winning form > RUGBY THE first team had no match last Saturday. With a few players carrying injuries and a difficult away trip to second-placed Leighton Buzzard coming up this Saturday, the coaching team decided not to arrange a fixture. Other sides played with mixed success, the seconds and vets both losing to Old Northamptonians and Kettering vets respectively. But the colts

got back to winning, after losing their first game of the season to Buckingham colts 17-24 the previous Saturday. They returned to fine winning style: a 69-0 victory over Old Northamptonians Colts, Captain Freddie Davidson scoring a hattrick with Tom Bryan, Connor Aldrich, Aiden Mcavoy, Harry Tarrant, Adam Bolton, Charlie Baker, Mitch Harris and Sam Smith scoring a try each, seven of them converted by Ryan Mackie.

On Sunday, the ladies made the long trip to Newbury, winning 17-12: Ludi Larcross one try and conversion, Emily Underwood and Becky Woodgate a try apiece. Wellingborough’s under-15 girls won their league match on Sunday, away to Ashby. The team has won all their games so far this season. Rebeckah Mallard scored three tries, Rhoda Woller two and Kate Cooper one. Aimed Weigleb made two conversions.

Diamonds pay the penalty > FOOTBALL Report by Rachael Gilbert. GROUND-sharing Wellingborough Town and AFC Rushden & Diamonds clashed in the UCL League Knock-out cup earlier this month at the Dog & Duck. With a crowd of more than 600 spectators, Diamonds had every reason to believe they were capable of progressing further at the expense of the ‘Doughboys’, thanks to a previous victory over UCL Premier Division, Yaxley. However, with Rushden currently experiencing a re-building process, following the departure of their management team, all did not go to plan. Just two minutes into the game a long ball reached the Doughboys’ penalty area, causing the defence to crumble. Wellingborough’s ’keeper could only palm a clearance into the path of Jake Newman, which the striker would smash into the roof of the net from six yards, giving the young stopper no chance. This early strike gave the Diamonds fans packed into the Peter de Banke Stand an opportunity to demonstrate their support. The Doughboys eventually settled and, on several occasions, caused the Diamonds defence to make hurried clearances. Slowly, the tables began to turn as Wellingborough edged closer to finding their finishing touch. A free kick was then given to Doughboys for Chris Hope’s high challenge on Glen Hawkins. The resultant ball followed through; misjudged by both defenders and goalkeeper alike. Doughboys debu-

tant, Joe Rich, forced an equaliser over the line. Rapid attacks from both sides set the stage and ball possession was panning out equally. Haycock went close for Wellingborough with a snap drive that almost caught the Diamonds ’keeper unawares. On the half hour, an error by the Doughboys defence would again

allow the Diamonds a chance which Ben Morgan gratefully accepted. Gently side-footing the ball into an empty Doughboy’s net, regaining the lead, at 2-1. BoyleChong was dominant following what seemed to be another tidechange in the game as the teams went in for half-time. However, it was a game that ebbed

and flowed either way throughout. Wallis was again brought into the action with a series of excellent saves which kept the score respectable. The Doughboys were beginning to gain more possession in midfield and a searching pass to Stef Gatting allowed him to drive the ball home from fully 25 yards to give the Doughboys a well deserved equaliser.

Diamonds seemed to be the fitter of the two teams in the closing stages. Following a corner, it appeared that former Doughboy, Alex Deakin, had given the Diamonds the lead when he out-jumped everyone; heading strongly into the top of the net. However, the goal was disallowed by referee, Karl Yezek, for allegedly climbing. As extra-time loomed, both sides became weary and an uninspiring 30 minutes of extra-time would follow. With 120 minutes of football played, this one would go to penalties, the score 2-2. Excited spectators were silenced when the Diamonds captain Chris Hope hit the bar with his spot-kick and the Doughboys gained the lead. The winning penalty was converted by the Doughboys ’keeper, Danny Wallace, whose shot was too strong for Quincy Shorunmu to parry. Diamonds may feel aggrieved to go out on penalties having taken the lead twice, but Wellingborough’s dogged determination was the winning factor on the day.
