Gallery plan moves nearer Permanent studio and gallery space is becoming a reality > Queen’s Square
In Short Corby is long overdue its own art gallery and studio space for artists, but that looks set to change. If plans come to fruition, artists in the town could have their own space to work and exhibit very soon. Confidence is growing that Corby is just weeks away from getting its own permanent art gallery and studios. The old library above Queen’s Square has already been transformed in to an exhibition space for Corby artists and the hope is it will become a permanent facility. Talks are ongoing to finalise details that will see Northamptonshire County Council, which leases the building, hand it over to the newly established Corby Artists Network, CAN. The group’s spokesperson writer and musician Paula Boulton admitted it was exciting times for CAN and Corby’s artistic community. “This is a real opportunity for
Corby people to come together and make it happen. Already more than 100 artists have come forward to show an interest and we want this to be an exciting space that works for people with different artistic needs,” she said. “Their ideas and support are important and we want to hear from more people who can see what a difference it will make.” The old library has been standing empty since the service transferred to the Cube in late 2010. The plans include a gallery and studios that will be rented out to artists. Paula explained: “We are trying to make sure that we meet the needs of different people. A lot of artists working in Corby are working class and were told to get a proper job first before trying to make a living from their art. They have day jobs like plumbers, nursing or are in the building trade and need to fit their artistic work around their day jobs. “Working like this can make people very isolated and many are invisible, but the time has come in Corby to make a change. There are grants and
support available for Corby projects but this very often goes to outsiders when there are clearly people eminently suited to do the work and who live in the borough. We hope this will change.” The new gallery will run as a notfor-profit venture with funding coming through studio rental, which might be for a day or even an hour, and other events – exhibitions are already being planned with CAN open to other ideas for the space. Paula and CAN’s working group are encouraging interested individuals to visit the gallery which is currently showcasing in Corby Open 2012 Show the work of 41 artists from across the borough. The exhibition was due to close at the end of March but will now run until April 21. Opening hours are Wednesday to Saturday between 11 and 4pm. Paula said: “People will be able to see the work and share their ideas. It is important that we pull even more artists out of the woodwork and they tell us what is important.” Paula can be contacted on email at positivepaula2@aol.com
Sounding out the world of work: CHILDREN from primary schools across Corby found out how much fun it can be to go to work when they attended the Corby Primary Careers Fair at the Masonic Hall. Darcy Lewis of Weldon CE Primary School had a good time checking out the sound systems and mixing desks brought along by Big Bopper Entertainment, who were one of just a number of firms who joined the event, sponsored by the Corby Learning Partnership.

The Jam workers liaise closely with us and are out every night talking to people and helping to diffuse any issues. “The whole structure is designed to ensure we have early identification and we can develop robust partnerships to tackle and resolve issues that are of concern to any community,” said Insp Williams, who believes the division’s forward planning is another reason for the ongoing success. “There is an awful lot going on and this year is no exception but we already have plans in place for events through the coming year. Trainee chefs have had a taste of working in a commercial environment during a four-day horse racing festival. The 34 learners and their tutors from Tresham’s Corby Campus made the annual trip to this year’s Cheltenham Festival to find out first-hand about the industry’s challenges. The trip, organised by chef and lecturer John Fahy and Compass Catering, saw the trainees working in a variety of kitchens, serving hundreds of racing enthusiasts. John said: “This experience has made a real difference for our learners; their confidence is now at an all time high.” Two of the learners, Reece Sterland and Ashley Baron were highlighted as outstanding and praised for their work ethics. Another learner, Ben Page, was presented with an award from the chefs for his enthusiasm and willingness to work.

Abbie’s keeping quiet about raising money > Kingswood
In Short When Abbie Attfield heard about the plight of young people with cancer, she decided to take what is, for a 15-year-old, drastic action. Despite cutting herself off from Facebook and Twitter, Abbie gave up her mobile phone for five days, raising in the region of £200 by her efforts A student gave up her beloved mobile phone for five days after being inspired by a young woman, diagnosed with lifethreatening leukaemia. Enterprising Abbie Attfield, 15, decided to raise money after hearing about the efforts of Karen Young, who is bidding to raise thousands of pounds to help fund a centre for young patients. But rather than the traditional sponsored walks or silence, the Kingswood School student came up with the money-spinning idea to go without her phone for the final week of term. Abbie explained: “I don’t know Karen personally but my mum, Debbie, told me about what she was trying to do and I thought it would be good to help. I keep being asked by my friends, ‘How can you do it?’ and it was difficult but I wanted to help.
GOOD CAUSE: Abbie Attfield may have missed her mobile, but it was all in a good cause. “It was tempting to see my social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter but I didn’t give in. I wasn’t been able to contact anyone but it helped me with revision. I had a French exam and spent the time revising rather than on my phone.” Abbie is hoping to raise £200 and support has come from students and staff including headteacher David Tristram. He said: “We are really pleased a student has taken the initiative and is interested in doing something for the community. It is different to the usual fundraising event and it would be good to think the idea might catch on.” The money will go to the appeal set up by
Karen, who is half way through her three-year treatment to beat an acute form of leukaemia, and her friend, Siobhan Buzzard. Sadly, Siobhan died last year, but her family are supporting the appeal, which will help fund the building of a children and young people’s cancer unit, Our Space. It will be based at Leicester Royal Infirmary, which cares for cancer patients from across the area including Corby. Karen’s efforts have already raised more than £2,500 for the appeal, coordinated by Leicester Hospitals Charity and the Teenage Cancer Trust. It has a £1.4 million target for the project to go ahead this summer with £1 million already pledged. Karen, who was diagnosed the condition during a routine blood test, said: “You can’t believe how good it feels to know that so many people like Abbie want to support what we are doing. It means so much. The last few years have been tough but this does make a difference. “The Our Space appeal will do what it says – give young patients their own space where we can have treatment alongside other young people.” For other updates see the Our Space Facebook page, and to support Abbie’s fundraising contact her via Kingswood School, 01536 741857 or email head@kingswoodschool.com
Woodland project New initiative will preserve wood > Rockingham Forest A Corby woodlands has been promised a better future at the launch of a new initiative. The Corby Woodland Project brings together businesses in the environmental and business sector to explore the opportunities to preserve the areas. For almost 1,000 years, Corby has been part of the historic Rockingham Forest. Within the borough, remnants of this ancient woodland have been preserved and new woodland areas created for the benefit of nature, the people of Corby and its surrounding villages. Leader of Corby Borough Council, Cllr Tom Beattie, said: “Corby’s woodland areas are something precious to the town and it is our aim to allow generations to also enjoy the beauty that residents of today can experience at Rockingham Forest. I look forward to the ideas being shaped and made a reality.”

Aspiring young actors will be showcasing their work at The Core at Corby Cube to herald the end of a six-month training programme. The curtain goes up on Friday, April 13 and Saturday April 14 on Manifesto, the first show from Corby Young Actors. The work explores the beauty and bitterness of what we want to say and how we choose to say it and has been created by the performers working alongside acclaimed theatre makers, Glas(s) Performance. Each member of Corby Young Actors have shared their own experiences to create this new piece of autobiographical theatre with the creators promising to deliver ‘a tender, true and brutally honest production’. Manifesto combines different aspects of performance, from physical theatre to comedy and live music. It is a show about opinions and how they are formed through the performers’ own journeys and experiences. After the show, the creative team at The Core will be planning for the next auditions on Thursday June 7 for places on the training programme which is open to committed performers aged between 15 and 25. The sessions provide an exciting opportunity for young people to develop their performance skills working with high profile artists from across the UK, giving local actors the skills to take their performance to the next level. Volunteers bring park back to life > Coronation Park Corby is celebrating more than two years of major improvements to one of its beloved open spaces, Coronation Park and now hoping more volunteers will offer support. During the past two years, Corby Borough Council, in partnership with Groundwork North Northants and the Friends of Coronation Park, have undertaken a wealth of jobs. These include improvements to the park entrance, refurbishment of the pavilion for community use, the development of plans to turn Blind Garden into a multifunctional perfor-
mance space and guided refurbishment plans for the Rose Arbour. Corby Borough Council’s Lead Member for Regeneration, Cllr Jimmy Noble said: “Coronation Park has been a fantastic success and that is a testament to all of the hard work volunteer groups such as the Friends of Coronation Park have put in to improving conditions at the park.” The Friends of Coronation Park welcome new volunteers. Group meetings are on the first Thursday of the month at 7pm in the park’s pavilion. Working parties run on the fourth Saturday of the month from 10am to noon, meeting at the pavilion.

Real people looking forward to real community news > COUNTY EXTRA is all about our communities and the people who live in them, and that’s why the promotional campaign that led up to this week’s launch focused very much on those who are active in the areas in which we live. Models and actors weren’t hired to pose for Extra Newspapers poster - instead, we went to the people we know care about where they live and have a hand in making where they live such a special place. Extra Newspapers was founded on a commitment to give our communities a voice and to offer hyper-local news that gives individuals and businesses the chance to contribute their news, views and event details to a wider audience. Among our poster models we had a family butcher, a busy mum, a local author and a professional chef - and they all agreed to back the Extra Newspaper brand because they all believe that what communities need are well-written, positive local newspapers that support and promote all that’s good about where they live. Louise Evans is from Broughton and is mum to seven-year-old Charlie and baby Vivi, who was born on Christmas Day. She also runs her own business, run-

ning a sales team for the Forever Living aloe products range. She said: “I’m lucky that I can run my business from home and be with my baby and my little boy whenever they need me. But, although I use Facebook and Twitter a lot, I need a local newspaper that informs me about what people are doing, where events are happening that might help me grow my business, and to learn about people and what makes them tick.” Meanwhile, Des Wallington is the owner of DDW Catering Ltd of Occupation Road, Corby, and he said: “We love being part of the local community with customers being able to meet us face to face and get a real taste of what we can offer. It is important we keep in touch with local news and Extra will be a welcome arrival - an opportunity to keep in touch with what’s happening in our town.” Fully aware of the power of the spoken word in getting a message across is Sue Moorcroft, a Kettering author who
has had a number of successful novels published including, most recently, Love and Freedom and Want To Know a Secret. She said: “In my line of work, letting people know about what you’re up to is vital, and local newspapers provide an outlet that you simply can’t find through larger, national organisations. As a resident of Kettering, I welcome the arrival of another means of keeping in touch with the community out there, newspapers provide such a vital service.” The local community will be at the heart of Extra Newspapers, which are published fortnightly in Kettering and Corby and, from later this month, in Wellingborough. Group editor Judith Halliday said: “The local community will be at the heart of each publication. Extra aims to prove that small and local can be beautiful. We will be right there, on the corner with the local community watching, reporting and sharing all the news.”

A NEW Strategic Planning Toolkit developed by Moore Stephens Chartered Accountants will help businesses explore new ways to improve profitability, using technical knowledge backed up by handson advice sessions. The toolkit allows business owners to look at five-year business and personal goals, develop a possible exit or succession plan. It can also be used to consider the withdrawal of locked-up capital over a period of time, and will provide potential funders with a clear picture of the business’s aims. The toolkit will involve two to four sessions, normally of around half a day each, to provide the foundation for building the plan without intruding too much on the working week. The owners and directors involved will make active and positive contributions, with the backing of expert advisers. Once the sessions have been completed, follow-up sessions will embed the plans and ensure pre-determined timescales are being met. Philip Walding, Partner at Moore Stephens said: “Strategic objectives are the foundation on which your structured strategic plan is built. With our new toolkit, initial action plans and review processes are agreed, ensuring that as soon as the facilitation process is complete, the plan can be implemented.” The Strategic Planning toolkit is one of a series of business advisory processes available from the firm. Full details on the range are available from Moore Stephens Chartered Accountants on 01536 461900 or visit the website www.moorestephens.co.uk

Pupils get a taste of working life
World of work comes a little closer thanks to careers day > Masonic Hall
In Short When you’re eight or nine, what happens in the world of work might seem boring and mundane, but around 400 youngsters from Corby schools got an insight into just how much fun it can be when they attended a careers fair. Nearly 400 primary school children have been given a taste of work at an innovative careers fair. A wide range of employers from across Corby took part in the Corby Primary Careers Fair, sponsored by Corby Learning Partnership, including Roquette, Big Bopper Entertainment, Raetech Racing, NHS, Northamptonshire County Council, Solway Foods, Howes Percival Solicitors, Adecco Recruitment and Natwest Bank. The event at Corby Masonic Hall gave Year 4 pupils, aged eight and nine years old, an opportunity to hear from at least five exhibitors about different career opportunities through interactive exhibitions. The organisers, Inspire2 Exceed, an enterprise that works to raise the aspirations and employability skills of students, is now continuing the work
in schools. Laura-Jane Rawlings, Managing Director of Inspire2Exceed, said: “Throughout the day we saw hundreds of students with beaming faces, and I cannot remember how many times I heard the word ‘wow’. “Inspiring students about the world of work is really important it helps them to understand why their education matters and what the big picture us. These events rely on the support of employers and I would personally like to thank all those that took part, I believe we made a real difference to the children.” Rebecca Bishop, Development Officer of Corby Learning Partnership, explained: “When we were approached by Corby’s primary headteachers we were encouraged that children are beginning to explore and think about potential careers from a young age. “The aim of the event was to provide every child with a flavour of local employers in Corby. The event inspired every young mind and school staff are planning on organising employer workshops within their own setting, which is fantastic. “Our thanks go to every employer that supported the event and to Inspire2Exceed for their hard work.”

Why do you need our support? So many people are doing so much good work to raise money for causes in and around their local communities, proving that Community Is Strength. EXTRA Health & Well being
Does human hourglass signal the time to tackle eating disorders? THE furore that has erupted over Romanian model Ioana Spangenberg’s hourglass figure has reignited the eating disorders debate. The 30-year-old with the 20-inch waist insists she eats plenty of junk food and simply can’t pile on the pounds. But as photos and video of the superskinny model swept the internet, the coverage prompted concerns that her story could trigger eating disorders in young girls who already struggle with their body image.Ioana, who at five feet six weighs in at just six stone, says she was an average size until her teens when her waist
was a tiny 15cms at the age of 13. She confesses to hating her body and shunning attention and recalls nights spent at home eating Mars bars, trying to get fatter, while her friends were going out on dates.Sadly, a poor body image, common in many young teenagers, can sometimes result in anorexia nervosa. The Royal College of Psychiatrists says anorexia affects approximately one in 150 15-year-old females, and 1 in 1000 15-year-old males in the UK.About 40% of those with anorexia recover completely, but around 30% of sufferers continue to
experience the illness long-term.The National Centre for Eating. Disorders says anorexia’s main features are a deep fear of food and eating and a disturbed perception of body size and shape, coupled with a fanatical desperation to avoid being fat. Anorexia is only diagnosed when body weight is very low, ie, when BMI is less than 17.5 or 10% less than would be expected at their size and age.The Centre says that other features common in the typical anorexic sufferer may include any or all of the following: Excessive exercise Complaints about stomach pains Withdrawing from other people Sleeping badly Running on empty Denying that there is a problemDepression Anger if people try to discuss the problem doing strange rituals with food or other odd behaviour Obsessively inspecting images of slim celebrities Cutting out food groups like meat or carbohydrate - perhaps making the excuse that this is about healthy eating. Feeling fat even at very low weights Con-
vincing other people that there is nothing wrong with them Visiting pro anorexia websites. Recovery is more likely in people who have only had the illness a short time and have not lost huge amounts of weight, so early intervention is critical. But getting the anorexic to accept help may be the biggest initial problem, with 95% denying they need help and refusing medical attention.Treatments, depending on the progression of the disease, can include medical input, motivational therapy, dietary education, force feeding and trauma work. But weight gain is only one of the goals - the most effective therapies are those which strengthen the sufferer, help them face their problems and cope with needing to be continually in control, so they can pursue a more meaningful life. It is estimated that the average course of anorexia is seven years so there is no quick fix for this condition. It is likely that cases of anorexia will continue to emerge as
the number of cases admitted to NHS hospitals in England rose from 419 in 1996-7 to 620 in 2005-6. But the Centre says the good news is that anorexia is not the hidden condition that it used to be. The internet is a good source of information for sufferers and carers and there are more dedicated treatment services, a growing diversity of therapies and eating disorder specialists whose research efforts will hopefully bear fruit in future. If you have any experience with eating disorders please contact us.

EXTRA HEALTH & Wellbeing Five fun health solutions The mysteries of your body explained you’ll really love
Ever wondered why we sneeze? Or how it is that yawning is contagious? We solve just a few of the weirdest most wonderful things about the human body. Why Do We Sneeze? Put simply, sneezing is a defence mechanism which removes foreign particles that irritate the lining of our nasal passages. We most often sneeze due to a cold - sneezing eliminates bacteria - but allergies also cause sneezing and even those who do not test positive for allergic rhinitis can react to allergens by sneezing. One in three people inherit ‘photic sneezing’, believed to be a congenital defect, which causes sneezing on exposure to bright light. What’s The Point Of Goose Bumps? Goose bumps occur when tiny muscles at the base of the hair follicles tighten, causing the hair to stand erect when a person is cold, scared or excited. By observing animals, scientists concluded that we get goose bumps when cold because the hair traps air to create insulation and when in a state of high emotion - in animals - to make one appear larger and more intimidating, a leftover from our earlier incarnations.
down at the newsagent at the crack of dawn. Melatonin and growth hormone affect the way we sleep and a lack of both make older people tired earlier and awaken earlier. Conversely, it is the amount of melatonin in their bodies which keeps teens in bed until midday. What Makes Me Hiccup? Excessive eating and drinking, stress or excitement can cause hiccups which scientists suggest may be caused by the fact that our distant ancestors lived in the sea. A similar system has been observed in amphibians who use the action for gill ventilation, but the fact that hiccups still exist points to the reflex’s usefulness in helping mammals learn to suckle. Why Is It So Difficult To Cure The Common Cold? The common cold is a virus and these cannot generally speaking be ‘cured’ (at least so far) - the only hope against any virus is vaccination. However there are so many strains of cold - around 200 at last count that it is extremely difficult to find a cureall without vaccinating a person 200 times.
Forget popping supplements and visits to the health food store: more and more evidence is pointing towards the fact that a little bit of what you fancy does you good. Here we count down the top five fun good for you. Chocolate - The daily trip to the office vending machine is normally the first thing to bite the dust at diet time. But there are plenty of reasons that a little chocolatey indulgence isn’t as bad as you might think. In theory, flavonoidrich chocolate should help to protect against heart disease while its antioxidant properties are reported to be cancer busting too. According to the most recent reports, our favourite sneaky snack even has anti-ageing powers. Red Wine We all know that too much alcohol is seriously bad news, but the French know a thing or
two about the healthy side of a little tipple, hence ‘the French Paradox’. Like chocolate, the skins and seeds of red wine grapes contain antioxidants - flavonoids and tannins - which can help to lower cholesterol and reduce blood pressure. Another ingredient, resveratol, slows down aging in the bones, eyes and muscles. Certain wines from France and Sardinia appear to be the most useful, but as with chocolate, it is important to be sensible and keep alcohol consumption low. Coffee It’s the news which no doubt made Mr Starbucks’ day - coffee isn’t all bad for you! In fact, the antioxidants in the
coffee bean unclog the arteries and are good for the old ticker. While overindulgence in the evil bean can cause thumping headaches, scientists in Italy (of course!) say that a lower dose of java can even cure headaches and help the liver by preventing gallstones and cirrhosis - enough excuse to hail it as the perfect hangover remedy. Avoid overdoing it and drink freshly ground and brewed espresso for maximum benefit. Sun Rarely a day goes by during the summer months when we aren’t bombarded with stories about the dangers of the sun. But let’s not forget that when
you’re sensible about it sunshine does great things for you. So slap on that sunscreen and get out there to soak up some vitamin D, which provides the best protection possible from colds and flu and boosts endorphins - your feelgood hormones. Twenty minutes in the sun every day could make all the difference to you if you’re feel run down
Stay up to date with 2012’s hottest Make Up trends Why Is Yawning Contagious? Contrary to popular belief yawning is not a sign of tiredness but designed to keep us awake by cooling the brain and helping us to work more efficiently. Therefore some scientists believe that contagious yawning is triggered by empathic mechanisms which maintain vigilance in a group. Only half of human adults are prone to contagious yawning. Why Do Milk Shakes Give Me Brain Freeze? Caused by eating or drinking extremely cold substances, brain freeze or an “ice cream headache” occurs when something cold touches the roof of the mouth or is swallowed. The effect is a result of the rapid freezing and then warming of the blood vessels in the palate which nearby pain receptors send to the brain, which then reads the message as referred pain in the forehead. Why Do Old People Get Up So Early? It’s a common myth that the elderly sleep less than younger adults. In fact it’s a combination of earlier nights, daytime naps and a change in hormones which has pensioners
Judging by the stunning combinations seen on the catwalks for the 2012 Spring and Summer collections, we will all be changing our make-up palette to complement the new fashion trends this year. Clashing colours, vivid purples and pinks along with metallic eyes and lips were seen on the Galliano, Dior and Betsey Johnson catwalk models to dramatic effect. Although others went for the opposite end of the spectrum with a freshfaced natural look, a return to the neon pink and fuchsia lip colours that were all the rage not so long ago seems likely for a fashionable 2012 look. The smoky eye look which was so popular in 2011 is still current, but jazzed up with metallic eye shadow in a sweep across the eye corners. Silver and gold eye pens come into their own for a really dramatic evening look, but can be toned down during the day using taupe eyeshadow and brown liner for a calmer, more demure look. Manufacturers have been quick to spot the new trends for eyes, and there are some good shadows with just a hint of metallic for those who want the look but prefer to be a little less bold. The loud message for 2012 is either daring and
dramatic and not to be missed, or its complete counterpart - the nude look, as seen being sported recently by a number of well-known celebs. In reality, they are far from bare-faced - rather they have been styled to perfection by professionals, but with good foundations that exactly match their skin tones. Thankfully, this look is easy to achieve by those of us that have to rely on our own skills, with plenty of great foundation products to choose from. Long gone are the days when the only choices on offer were light, medium or dark - these days, you can select the matching shade for your skin tone. As well as the perfect foundation, the nude look requires very well moisturised skin, so buy the best moisturiser that you can afford for your skin type and use it every day without fail; moisturising your skin evenly will prevent dry patches appearing when you apply your foundation. The whole aim of this look is that it should appear that the face on display is devoid of any makeup and that you just have terrific skin, which few of us do! To complete the picture, add a hint of delicate
blusher, and for eyes, use cream shades with a light coat of mascara. Lips should be moist and barely coloured at all - there are plenty of good lip moisturisers that offer the slightest hint of colour and gloss, making lips look flawless. So this year, the choice is yours. If you are brave enough, the message for evenings is to “go for it”: be as brash and bold with your colours as you dare, make your eyes dramatic and unmissable, and make a real statement with your make-up. For the best results, remember to buy the best quality products that your budget allows, no matter which look you decide to adopt in 2012. Health & Wellbing will be a regular feature in your Extra - are you a business in this field? Please contact hello@extranewspapers.co.uk

EXTRA PINTS & PIZZAS IPad3 or is it the IPad2S As an intrepid user of Apple, I was un-fazed by the launch of the new IPad 3. Their new tablet that has caused chaos around the globe with Apple fans queuing up for hours, even days to get their hands on the latest hardware, didn’t cause the same wanting inside that the IPad2 did. Apple has a way on revealing their products, the gossip and news that goes around before hand is the tablet of dreams and the first IPad with Siri (The new voice recognition system to grace the Iphone4s) and then give us 60% of what we wanted, but hold back 40%. This is what has happened, no Siri, but a quicker processor with a new retina display that packs more pixels than your eyes can distinguish. As a new customer to the tablet market this will blow your mind. Games that run better and more fluid than their console counterparts, business apps that let you run everything you need from the palm of your hand and all of the social media sharing, networking and chatting that you could ever want. All of this, quicker, more responsive and in higher definition than ever before. The problem is as an IPad2 customer, the actual IPad is fast enough. Over the time of having one I’ve never once said it was slow, and never once complained that the screen resolution was not good enough. I will therefore not be purchasing one.
Vote for them!
Does your local landlord or lady go the extra mile to ensure their pub always provides a pleasing pitstop or hospitable haven?!? If so, why not nominate them as Northamptonshire’s ‘Community Pub of the Year’ in the Carlsberg UK Northamptonshire Food and Drink Awards 2012/13!
For the people who want a tablet computer grab yourself a bargain with the IPad2 sales now on and await the next tablet. IPad with Siri is what we all want, and it will definitely be worth the wait.

EXTRA MOTORS Citroen C4 mid-weight safely boxes a bit clever
4 APRIL, 2012
Design team come up with attractive looking, well equipped package with new safety features There’s a lot of choice in the mid-weight hatchback market. This is good news for customers as long as they can pick through the pros. and cons. of the models on offer. Citroën cast off its idiosyncratic mantle long ago. However, the current design team has come up with an attractive looking, well equipped package in the form of the latest Citroën C4. And they have included some very clever safety features. Not content with creating a car that holds a 5-star Euro NCAP occupant safety rating, Citroën has introduced an SOS monitoring system. This can pin-point the car’s position, either automatically if the car is in trouble, or by the driver pressing a clearly indicated button. In addition this car features a blind spot monitor that utilises the car’s ultrasound parking sensor system. Pictograph images on the large, exterior mirrors, warn of nearby cars, particularly those that might by overtaking rather closely. Whether customers prioritise safety factors like these over other attributes, such as economy or driver entertainment, remains to be seen. To create the C4, Citroën has carried over a number of proven components. These include: the floor pan; the suspension torsion beam rear system; a choice of three petrol and three diesel
Driving with kids: keeping it stress-free engines, ranging in capacity from 1.4 to 2.0-litres; with three equipment guises. I drove the flagship 2.0-litre turbo diesel, in top Exclusive form that offers a passable 148 bhp; and a 56.5 mpg combined fuel consumption that should boil down to a genuine 45 mpg under mixed driving/weight conditions. Outright performance is lively enough at a claimed 129 mph with 62 mph (100 kph) reached in a brisk 8.2 seconds. A sensibly ratioed, 6-speed manual gearbox has a light change action that takes a short time to become accustomed to. It actually allows sufficient
rapid selection to optimise the flexibility and the usual, narrow power window, of the turbo diesel engine. Automatic transmission is not offered with this engine but is available on other versions. Driving dynamics are satisfactory rather than exciting. The light steering is fine for around town though a bit soft for those looking for a more sporty drive in the mode of the DS3. But as an all-round car, driving characteristics are of a non-demanding nature and above all, offer quiet, unruffled, mile-eating cruising. These qualities sell a lot of cars in France and generally appeal to the multi-taskers. Certainly driver comfort is to the typically high standard I expect from a Citroën, mid-weight. Apart from the slightly tight pedal position, the manually adjustable driver’s seat provides good support and there is a useful range of tilt/ reach adjustments for the steering wheel. Driver vision is generally good though looking into the rear mirror on a wet night I would have prefered the rear window wiper to be a bit larger. Fascia presentation is a bit of a breakaway from the norm for style. It is impressive for finish and features a mix of easily readable digital and analogue instrumentation. The overall functionality, including utilisation of the leather covered steering wheel, as a switching ‘nerve centre’ for a number of audio
and communication applications, works very well. There is comfortable space for five adults, the allocation of rear leg space actually appears to look tighter than it really is in practice. Boot capacity I suspect is a tad tighter than I found in earlier Citroën mid-weights such as the ZX and Xsara, though it’s still quite generous. It is fitted with luggage securing metal lugs and is augmented by the usual 60/40 split folding rear seats. However, I should have preferred to be able to fold those seat backs fully flat into the floor in order to gain greater capacity. Oddments stowage all around the car, always a Citroën strong point, is well above average and sensible in application. I like the automatic folding exterior mirrors when remotely locking the car – it confirms to me that the car is actually locked! Puncture problems are covered by a space-saver wheel. Weather during the test period could not have been more challenging, but at least showed the car handled well in the snow, and the heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems delivered as expected. Apart from the innovative touches, there might not be any other outstanding features I can pinpoint but on all counts, the C4 sets very high averages. And to me, that is the formula for a good car.
Conveying your children in the family car is an almost everyday experience but there are some important and often overlooked factors in making sure that the journey is a safe and pleasurable experience for all concerned. Children under three should be carried in a safety seat which is the correct type for their weight, both for the comfort of the child and their safety. What is suitable for a baby is not suitable for a toddler, and car seats should be replaced as the child grows. The seat should be correctly fitted as defined by the manufacturer’s instructions and should be in compliance with current safety guidelines.Always be aware that children are curious little beings. Employ child locks for every journey, and make sure that tiny fingers are out of the way when the electric sun roof or windows are opened or shut. The new style of sun shades which still allow the window to move up and down are a good addition to your car, providing shade on sunny days and protecting a stationary child from becoming overheated. Most children cope well with the normal day-to-day journeys by car, but a longer trip can be a challenge for all concerned. Every parent will have experienced the stress that can occur on long drives with restless, bored children in the rear. It can be very distracting for the driver but there are some very simple steps that can be taken both prior to, and during the journey, to alleviate this.Pack your car before you pack the children in and make sure you don’t overload it and make it impossible for them to move. Be careful to ensure that items are secure and cannot be thrown about the car during braking or other manoeuvres. You can get your children to pack a small bag of favourite things to entertain themselves with on the journey so that they will see it all as an adventure and something pleasurable. Tell them where you are going, how long it will take and what you will be doing at the journey’s end, so they know what is going on and how long they are to be in the car. Put their favourite music or story CDs in the car to play during the trip and pack up a few healthy snacks and drinks, avoiding any with additives which may make your children hyperactive. If the trip is very long, it is important to schedule regular stops for toilet breaks and to stretch little legs. There are plenty of places that have play areas attached and just half an hour of running around will keep them from getting too bored, as well as giving the driver a chance to have refreshments and stretch their legs too. It is sometimes a good idea to travel at night as most children will happily fall asleep in the car and only awaken when a large portion of the journey has been completed. Driving long distances with children is not always a pleasurable experience but with a little forethought and planning it need not be something to be dreaded.

EXTRA MOTORS Practical Leon becomes more a lot more dynamic SEAT’s Leon hatchback is on track to complement the iconic VW Golf as a vehicle of distinction The Leon DNA has high standards of engineering and build quality, allied to smart styling and high levels of practicality. It has an identity that is increasingly recognisable. Having to visit Spain on a regular basis I generally end up in a hire version of the Leon by choice because of its generous interior space when carrying four adults with luggage. Then there’s the driving character. It has always been satisfying and easy with sufficient feeling to ensure a great deal of driver enjoyment. Diesel versions have usually been my preference but life is changing rapidly. Small capacity petrol engines, equipped with a complementing turbocharger, have rapidly come into the frame. Slotted under the bonnet of my road test Leon, is a modern, four-cylinder, turbo boosted engine of a mere 1.4 litres that pushes out a highly commendable 123 bhp, or 125
ps as SEAT would prefer it put. The turbo really does operate in tandem to create a smooth power curve rather than the hiss and surge of earlier, turbo petrol engines. What is important is that this method of engine power is pretty clean of the environmental challenging stuff, depositing 145 g/km and keeping the VED annual cost to £130 a year. This stylish looking, five door/five seat hatchback, combines generous practicality with, in this model’s case, a turn of performance that can shake out the cobwebs if fully exploited. SEAT claim a top speed of 122 mph, with acceleration from rest to 62 mph (100 kph) in a competitive 9.8 seconds. This is further enhanced by a wide, free revving power band that can be optimised by a positive, short change acting, 6-speed gearbox. This is no dull performer, yet
it’s surprisingly docile around town with a power ‘window’ from 2,000 to 5,000 rpm, which means not too much work for the clutch foot. Forced induction engines were notorious petrol guzzlers in the past and it has taken the Volkswagen Group to provide a modern generation of both supercharged and turbocharged units that deliver impressive economy figures. This one is quoted with a combined consumption of 45.6 mpg, which should realistically provide a good 40 mpg without too much driver effort. SEAT have really set this car up to pander to the driver who can take for granted the hugely competent ride, sports suspension handling, positive steering and braking action. Then you can add on ‘treats’ like the all-round audio parking sensors; coming home headlight system; excellent windscreen
wiper cover with the blades parked out of sight in the windscreen pillars; Electronic Stabilisation Programme; cruise control; and, interestingly, tyre pressure monitoring. As for the driver’s ‘work station’ I would suggest the feel good factor sets in, even before settling into the sports type, figure-hugging seat The clean and clearly presented instrument panel and surrounding fascia are eye-catchingly impressive – as I would expect from SEAT. Ergonomically the driving position takes a lot of beating. There is a good range of mechanical adjustment of the seat; the steering column has tilt/reach adjustment; the pedals are well spaced and at a good height; and there is a good sized foot rest. Driver vision is as good as it gets in a modern hatchback of this size. The main blind spot is caused
by the high rear window, but is overcome by good sized exterior mirrors, and of course, the parking sensors. This SEAT’s interior world is an impressive blend of comfortable and practical space; a good sized luggage compartment augmented by split folding rear seats; comprehensive equipment packaging consid-
ering the overall price; and, above all, high quality build and finish. This modern powered model is just a sample of a wide spectrum of the mechanical and specification variants on the Leon menu. All I can think of adding, is a full-sized spare wheel and a grab handle above the driver’s door.

EXTRA time for tea Play EXTRA Sudoku and win Logo - the UK’s number one best-selling family board game
We love our brands, and the logos that symbolise them. We’re even prepared to be walking adverts by wearing logos on our clothes, shoes and bags. Everyone in the family, young and old, can spot a Shell petrol station or a Burger King at 500 metres, just from the sign. And while we may not consciously realise it, we all know much, much more about these essential marketing emblems than we think.
That’s what makes LOGO, the brilliant, highly popular picture board game from Drumond Park (rrp £32.99) such a sure-fire winner. The game features recognition and knowledge questions based on hundreds of the UK’s best loved and most iconic brands – from the AA, Bird’s Eye and BMW to Walkers crisps and Wrigley’s gum. There are 400 question cards in three categories – 200 Pictorial, 100 Themed and 100 ‘Pot Luck’. Each Picture card features full- or part- logo images to identify, coupled with questions relating to the brand. The answers on the
Themed cards relate to the headings, such as ‘Birds’ (eg Kiwi Shoe Polish, Penguin, Swan Vestas) and ‘Relatives’ (eg Aunt Bessie’s, Daddies, Uncle Ben’s).

Grant sets club up for Olympic year facelift Cash boost will help club open facilities up to more members In Short Landfill firm Wren has donated more than £34,000 to help Corby Athletics Club reach its target for improving the facilities it offers to members. The club believes the money will help it grow in what is expected to be a significant year for athletics fans. All the stops are being pulled out to enable Corby Athletics Club to revamp its facilities in time for the start of the Olympics Games. The thriving club, which has around 300 members, already has impressive facilities at Rockingham Triangle but a grant will enable the club room, kitchen and weights room to be revamped. Landfill firm Wren has given £34,415 to the club so that it can now undertake the revamp and open the club to an even wider community. The £42,000 project, which includes £7,000 raised by the club, will begin next month.
It is a welcome step forward for members, including Carol Boyd and Maggie Mulholland, who coordinated the grant application. Bill Boyd, the club’s senior coach, said: “A lot of work needed to be done to get the bid sorted and we are extremely pleased. It is fantastic news. “The refurbishment is long overdue. The club room is stuck in the 1970s and needed work doing to it for a long time. Now it can be a place where members can relax and the wider community can make use of the facilities. “We are really hoping to take the club into a new era and hope this work will be complete in time for the opening of the Olympics.” The track and stadium, which has a covered tier stand with seating for 992, was opened in 1985. People of all ages and fitness levels already make use of the facilities which include a 400m eight-lane track and a 12- lane straight. Bill now hopes others people will be encouraged to find out more about the
club including an open meeting on Tuesday, April 17. Bill explained: “In the week when it is just 100 days to go to the Olympics, Corby AC are running an open meeting which is an opportunity to try an athletics event on the track. “There are races for everyone from your club runner to a total beginner who would just like to see what time they could achieve for a set distance.” The first race, at 7pm is 1,000 metres, 7.10pm will see a series of 60-metre races and at 7.30pm there will be 600-metre races. Those wanting to have a go at 150 metres should limber up for 7.45pm, 8pm is 200 metres and around 8.15pm the meeting will finish with races over 300 metres. All entries are on the night and it is recommended runners turn up at least an hour before their chosen event. Entry costs are £3 for one event and £1 extra for subsequent events. For more details, including times of training session, see the club’s website, www. corbyac.com

Matthew, a Year 10 pupil at Corby Business Academy, said: “I was really pleased with my performance and so glad that all my hard work paid off. “I really enjoy the competing side of things and think it is a great sport to be involved in.” The student, who has been swimming for just three years, trains seven days a week and is a member of Northampton Swimming Club. Twice a week he starts the day at 4am and is out of bed by 6.30am on a Sunday to make it to the pool for a training session. To make sure he has enough energy for the intensive trainings sessions he follows a strict carbohydrate packed diet. Matthew is now keen to get the time needed to qualify for the national competition held in August. After setting 10 personal bests during the County Championships he is well placed to get there. He said: “My target for this year is to reach the National Championships and ultimately I would like to win a medal at national level.”
