A SPARKLING royal welcome awaited the Queen on her much-anticipated Diamond Jubilee visit to Corby today.
While the rest of the country was packing away its bunting, the town’s Jubilee party was still going strong – with a packed programme to entertain the royal visitor and thousands of people set to line the streets. It was a particularly special day for Jack Williams, three, a nursery pupil at Kingswood Primary School and Alyshea Moyo, four, who goes to St Patrick’s RC Primary School. They were handing over posies to Her Majesty on her arrival in the town. The Queen was set to visit the Corby East Midlands International Pool and the Corby Cube on Parkland Gateway in her first visit to the town in 11 years. Today’s events include music, dance and drama and an aquatic display. More than 300 people were set to perform before the royal visitor. They included Corby Business Academy Year 9 student Eloise Robertson, part of a 26-strong youth choir. She said: “To be part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations is just brilliant.” The Queen was being welcomed to Corby by the sound of the Grampian Pipe Band and Highland dancers – celebrating the town’s Scottish roots. Council leader Tom Beattie said: “I think this is a day that everyone in Corby can be proud of.”

Pilot scheme opens up new opportunities
Young people can gain skills and experience that make a difference > COUNTY YOUNG people in Northamptonshire will be given the chance to develop skills for the future after the county was chosen as one of only a handful of pilot areas for a new programme The National Citizen Service (NCS) is a scheme to give young people aged 16 and 17 the opportunity to take part in outdoor activities and social events that increase their experience and skills level so that they can enhance their CV or educational applications. This year, the project, which is run in Northamptonshire by the University of the First Age, will see 30,000 places available nationally of which around 150 will be in this county, growing to 90,000 places nationally by 2014. There are still places available for programmes running this summer. Evaluation of the scheme, which was first suggested by David Cameron in 2005, found that participation in NCS increased wellbeing and reduced antisocial behaviour. The Prime Minister said: “Every time I meet young people taking part in NCS they tell me what a difference it has made: they feel more confident about their future and more connected to their community. I am delighted that
the independent evaluation reflects this and shows that NCS makes a real difference to the lives of young people and to our country.” Linda Gregory, Chief Executive University of the First Age said: “This is the first time many of the young people in Northamptonshire area will have access to the NCS programme. It’s a real chance for our young people to stand out from the crowd, develop skills essential to our local employers and become a valued member of their community. There is already a great deal of excitement from the young people who have signed up, and we have still have some places left for anyone who is interested.” The scheme is available to people from all backgrounds and brings together those who might otherwise not have met. It takes place over three weeks full time and then 30 hours are spent making the local community a better place. The Government will shortly be inviting voluntary organisations, social enterprises, businesses and public sector organisations to bid to run programmes for up to 90,000 young people by 2014 in a market that is worth around £200 million. For more information about NCS go to facebook/ncs or www.direct. gov.uk/ncs

Sarah shows fine form
NEWS IN BRIEF
Student sees work displayed internationally > TRESHAM INTERNATIONAL acclaim awaits a student from Tresham’s BTEC Extended Diploma in Textiles. Sarah Winstanley had her design for a sculptural piece of clothing purchased by Desborough-based lingerie and swimwear company, Eveden to be displayed in their UK and New York offices. Students were asked to produce a sculptural clothing piece under the theme of ‘Bodies’ to celebrate the female form, ensuring that their piece could be worn by women of any shape or size by including secret panels. All students’ work was then showcased at a charity fashion show, culminating in an auction that raised £750 for Cransley Hospice. Materials for the project were donated by Eveden and included lace, elastic, padding, boning and fastening materials. Sarah’ s creation will be exhibited firstly in Eveden’s Desborough headquarters before being sent to offices in New York, where it will be displayed as part of an exhibition. A further four pieces were judged as highly commended produced by Danielle Wagstaff, Hannah Leaning, Mary Maggs and Daisy Aldwinckle. As well as having her work selected to be showcased by Eveden, Sarah, 18, from Corby has been offered a week’s work placement
with Eveden over the summer. After that, she will continue studying at Tresham and will be moving onto the BTEC Foundation Diploma in Art and Design course. Sarah said: “I found the whole project really enjoyable yet challenging, having to make your piece adaptable to fit all sizes can be quite difficult. We were given free rein, which allowed us all to be as creative as we wanted. I am really pleased that my work has been selected by Eveden to display and I’m looking forward to completing work experience with them over the summer. After this experience I hope to progress into working in textile design once I complete university.” Liesl Goodman, Goddess/Elomi Design Manager with Eveden, said: “We feel that Sarah’s outfit fulfils all requirements of the brief set to the students. We like the way Sarah used bra wires to construct a very sculptural piece, and how it is truly a celebration of the female form. Sarah’s outfit is so highly creative, yet wearable. We like how the print works when worn, and her use of colour.” Sarah’s tutor, Chris Sonmez, added: “We are especially proud of the standard of the students’ hard work on the Eveden Live project. We are all very pleased that Sarah’s work has been chosen to be displayed for Eveden’s UK showrooms and then other locations, including New York.

Summer drink-drive message is simple > NORTHAMPTONSHIRE NOW that the summer of celebration is well under way, so too is Northamptonshire Police’s anti drink and drug campaign. The campaign, launched at the beginning of this month, will see officers conduct breath tests on drivers as well as looking for signs of drug taking, to ensure they are not under the influence while driving. With key major events like the Euro 2012 and the Olympics following the Queen’s Jubilee this summer, the message from Northamptonshire Police is “there’s a lot to celebrate this summer…so if you’re drinking – don’t drive”. The campaign which supports the national crackdown coordinated by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), will see officers carrying out checks on roadsides to tackle those drivers who drink or take drugs and then get behind a wheel. Tests will be carried out at all times of the day and night, including first thing in the morning, as drivers are urged to think twice before getting behind the wheel the morning after drinking – when alcohol can still be in body. With the summer weather, street parties, barbecues, festivals and foot-
ball games, more people will be out and about enjoying a drink or two. Driving a vehicle when under the influence of drink or drugs will potentially risk peoples’ lives and those caught can receive a fine of up to £5000, a minimum 12 month driving ban and a criminal record. A total of 83 people were arrested for drink driving on the county’s roads during last summer’s campaign from 1 June to 30 June 2011. During the campaign, 686 breath tests were carried out which resulted in 83 arrests – 17 per cent of all drivers tested. Of all the breath tests conducted, 239 were carried out on under 25 year olds with 24 per cent being positive. Deputy Chief Constable Suzette Davenport, ACPO lead for drink and drug driving, said: “My message to those that are going to get behind the wheel is that they should stay away from alcohol and drugs. The consequences of not doing so can be devastating. It’s a simple decision for drivers, have fun but don’t drive. If you make the wrong decision, then our officers will be waiting to catch you. “Taking drugs or drinking before getting behind the wheel, can seriously impair you’re judgement. Don’t let a summer of celebration end at a police station.”

Appeal to bring history to life
Sukeys Hair Lounge
Wicksteed memories needed for historical guide > WICKSTEED PARK GENERATIONS of local families are being asked to get out their photo albums as part of a project to bring the history of Wicksteed Park to life. For nearly 100 years people of all ages have been thrilled by a visit to the Kettering attraction – created by Charles Wicksteed to inspire and encourage play as part of a healthy life. Wicksteed Park has now launched the appeal as part of a project to ensure their memories and the role the park has played in people’s lives are preserved forever. The project includes the creation of a new souvenir historical guide to the park, being written by national park historian and author Linden Groves – who says she has a “determination to give the historic outdoors a small place in every child’s heart.” As well as old family photos taken at Wicksteed Park in which the park and facilities are visible, she is also keen for people’s memories of animals at the park over the decades, play equipment and any amusing or fond anecdotes – including couples who met at the park

HAPPY MEMORIES: Golden ages of play at Wicksteed Park Linden said: “I would also like to find people who remember the park during the Second World War (or the First!) and especially those who went on a Holiday at Home in the park. “Also, I am looking for memories of people, or descendants of people, who worked at the park and especially those who built or ran particular features.” “Charles Wicksteed was revolutionary in the way he changed leisure time and helped prompt a healthier lifestyle by providing a wonderful open space and play equipment for
ordinary, working class people. His ideas now formulate the bedrock of family leisure time and nobody should under estimate the contribution both he and the park have made.” Anyone who wants to share their memories or photographs can email memories@wicksteedpark.co.uk or write to Memories, Wicksteed Park, Barton Road, Kettering NN15 6NJ. Children’s day of sporting excellence > COUNTY ROTHE real deal may be some way off for most of us, but children from across the county will be taking part in their own Olympics next month. The Northamptonshire Sport School Games will bring together more than 800 pupil athletes to compete in 17 different sports, including five disability sports. Held at Moulton College and Lings Forum, the event is part of a nation-
wide initiative to encourage young people to get more involved with sport, potentially inspiring the next generation of Olympic hopefuls. Those taking part have been competing at district level for the past few months to qualify for the School Games and, behind the scenes, the organisers have been working to ensure those taking part will experience a quality competition. Linda Brooks, Head Teacher of
Cash when you need it > COUNTY YOUNG people searching for CASH won't find money, but a one-stop mobile site to help them access NHS Contraception and Sexual Health services. The new mobile website - www. wheresmycash.co.uk - has been launched to provide simple and straightforward information about emergency contraception and sexual health directly to a mobile phone. Users can search for the nearest pharmacist who can provide emergency contraception and get directions to the pharmacy. If emergency contraception is needed, the pharmacist will conduct a private consultation with
the patient, and will also discuss future contraception requirements. They will be signposted to relevant NHS services if necessary. Marie McLoughlin, Public Health Specialist at NHS Northamptonshire said: "We wanted to break down some of the barriers to young people accessing emergency contraception and sexual health advice. The vast majority of young people have smartphones, so it made sense to create a mobile site for them to get to this information quickly and easily. "The best outcome would be for young people to think about contraception before they have sex, but we know that it doesn't always happen this way."
Spooner
I love the Queen
WE ALL have our own views and feeling when it comes to The Royal Family, The Queen and what she actually does to benefit the country. There's one thing we can agree on, however, all of the pageantry over the past few weeks has made us all 'Proud to be British'. If you haven't heard already, you'll notice by today's traffic-jams, excessive bunting and cheers of 'joy', that HM The Queen is in Corby today. This got me thinking about 'Britishness', and how Scotland is so quick to try and opt-out of anything which appears to belittle their 'independence'. The announcement of The Queen's visit to Corby came at around the same time that the Scottish Parliament announced that they were going to be holding a vote, with the hope of taking the country in a new direction, and leaving the UK. The Scottish Parliament's symbolic vote appears to suggest that the two nations cannot live side-by-side, but does Corby not show the exact opposite? Today the people of Corby, both those originally from England and those from Scotland will be lining the streets to catch a glimpse of Her Maj, not because they're proud to be English; nor Scottish; but because they're proud to be British, and they're proud of everything that stands for. It's almost became my aim to make a point in all of the pieces I write, but I don't really think I need to conclude too much on this one - the point is loud and clear. The fact that we can proudly call ourselves 'British' and that we can freely step out onto the street this morning, and see The Queen of this nation of ours shows that we have a huge amount of independence and a great deal to be proud of, so why are weletting politics stand in the way of that? Have fun, today. If you agree with Spooner or have your own take on things why not comment on our Letters and Rants page in our next issue. Send your emails or letters to: hello@extranewspapers.co.uk
Manor School and Sports College, said “With London 2012 fast approaching, the School Games give Northamptonshire a great opportunity to showcase high-quality competitive sports and the county’s finest pupil-athletes. A lot of hard work and a partnership approach will ensure that the pupils have an enjoyable experience using world-class facilities. I’m sure that this year’s School Games will inspire pupils to further their participation after this fantastic event.” The School Games will host a number of disability sports including archery, goalball, table tennis, table cricket and new age curling to give pupils with learning and physical disabilities the opportunity to participate in competitive sport. Disability Sport at the School Games will be the product of the Project Ability programme that is delivered across Northamptonshire to give young people with disabilities the opportunity to engage in high-quality school sport. As well as supporting pupil-athletes, School Sport Managers in each district have been developing Leadership Academies in primary and secondary schools to support sports delivered at the School Games. In preparation for the event, more than 200 sports leaders will receive specific School Games training and will assist National Governing Bodies of Sport to deliver high-quality competitions at the event.
DRAGON’S DEN: Teams are needed to enter the Dragon Boat Race later this summer.
Dragons race > WICKSTEED PARK MORE than 30 teams are set to take to the water for this year’s Nene Valley Dragon Boat Race, which organisers say will be the biggest and best yet. This year’s race has been switched from Lilford Lakes, its home for the past two years, to Wicksteed Park and the call has gone out for crews to compete for the title. The charity race, organised by the Rotary Clubs in East Northamptonshire, will take place on September 2 and will raise funds for a number of good causes including the Cransley and Lakeland hospices.
A spokesman said: “Dragon boat racing has become a popular fundraising event as it’s proven to not only offer a great day out to the local community, but raises thousands of pounds for worthy charities at the same time. It is also an excellent team building opportunity.” Last year’s event raised more than £13,000 for good causes. There were more than 30 teams racing at that event. The entry fee for this year is £350 per team with 10 rowers and one drummer in each team. Visit www.nenevalleydragons.org.uk or email enquiries@nenevalleydragons.org.uk

Providing protection - from the Queen to Clubs, Groups and Classes the clubber and your neighbourhood
New man in charge promises public order offences will be tackled > KETTERING
IN SHORT Confidence in the police is increasing but Kettering and Corby’s new district commander knows that there’s some important work to be done, both by his officers and by their community partners - from keeping an eye on the Queen to keeping our town centres safe late at night ALWAYS one for the big occasion, Kettering and Corby’s new district police commander Chief Inspector Chris Hillery will be providing his services at one of the biggest occasions in the country this summer. With specialist knowledge in large crowd events, honed through years spent policing the likes of the Formula 1 Grand Prix at Silverstone and football and rugby crowds around the county, Ch Insp Hillery is one of
the Northamptonshire officers chosen to assist the Met in policing the London Olympic Games, starting with the opening ceremony on July 27. “I’ve been involved in public order and large events policing for some years and I’m absolutely thrilled to be going to the opening ceremony of the Games next month,” said Ch Insp Hillery, who took up his new position as district commander last month. “When you add to that the fact that I will be heading up the protection squad for the Olympic torch relay, and the team that polices the Queen’s visit to the county this month, it’s going to be an exciting early few weeks in the job.” From his desk in Kettering, the summer of special events are just a few of the list of priorities he is focusing on. Guarding the Queen is
THE BEAT GOES ON: Chris Hillery one thing, but he is equally passionate about protecting the people in his district, from those suffering the threat of domestic violence to those looking to enjoy a safe night out in our town centres.

Violent crimes are, he says, top of his list of issues to tackle, building the public’s confidence in the police and sending out a clear message that those behaving in a way that has a detrimental effect on the lives of others will not be tolerated. “We want to see reporting of domestic violence but at the same time we want to find ways to educate the perpetrators and break the cycle of that behaviour,” he said. “The same applies to that tiny percentage of people who go out into our town centres on a Friday and Saturday night and cause problems. “Using plain clothes officers as well as a uniformed presence means that we can see the problems as they start to unfold. If someone is in a bar and it looks likely there’s going to be some trouble, it can be flagged up. “Where necessary, we will issue a Section 27 notice that asks the offender to leave the town centre altogether.” What Ch Insp Hillery feels is one of the most important aspects of a Section 27 notice is that during the following week, the recipient of the notice is visited at home where officers discuss the behaviour that prompted the action, showing CCTV footage where it exists. “Sometimes, that is all that is needed to make
the person involved see what happened and how they were behaving and it’s enough to make them think twice about behaving that way again,” he said. “What we want is safer communities where offenders, who are very much in the minority, are dealt with in a way that breaks the pattern.” The police work with a number of partners to ensure that they are just one part of bringing about changes in behaviour and attitudes in our society. Community Safety Partnerships bring the police together with local authorities, other emergency services and the probation service, while Operation Guardian in Northamptonshire is aimed educating communities in how they can help tackle crime. Corby Jam is a team of youth workers who liaise with the police and Corby Borough Council to divert young people away from crime. “It comes back to educating people,” said Ch Insp Hillery. “Whether that’s officers going into schools to talk to youngsters about their views on crime and how crime affects them, or making the community safer for people, whether in their own homes or out on the streets. “Working with other agencies and building confidence in the police, hopefully, we can make a real difference.”

Ready to fly the flag on Jubilee weekend > WELLINGBOROUGH GOLF CLUB LIKE many events this summer, the Federation of Small Businesses' Golf Day was almost put in doubt by the weather, but nothing was going to stop the organisation raising vital funds for the Air Ambulance. Wellingborough Golf Club had its greens in perfect condition for the event, despite the wet weather, and most of those taking part managed to get to the seventeenth and eighteenth holes before having to resort to waterproofs. Alan Price of Marshman Price was outright winner, also winning the Nearest the Pin award, while John Hardwick won the Longest Drive. No-one made a hole in one, to the disappointment of sponsor Colin Hilbourne, The Garage at Blakesley, but Colin reported that he enjoyed the day (and evening) so much that he is actually taking up golf so that he can take part next year. If you would like any further information about Air Ambulance please get in touch, their team will be happy to help. Tel: 08454 130999
WINNER: Alan Price was the overall winner on the day
NEARLY THERE: Rob Sloan picked up the runnersup prize.

EXTRA COMPETITION Win Logo - the UK’s number one best-selling family board game We love our brands, and the logos that symbolise them. We’re even prepared to be walking adverts by wearing logos on our clothes, shoes and bags. Everyone in the family, young and old, can spot a Shell petrol station or a Burger King at 500 metres, just from the sign. And while we may not consciously realise it, we all know much, much more about these essential marketing emblems than we think. That’s what makes LOGO, the brilliant, highly popular picture board game from Drumond Park (rrp £32.99) such a sure-fire winner. The game features recognition and knowledge questions based on hundreds of the UK’s best loved and most iconic brands – from the AA, Bird’s Eye and BMW to Walkers crisps and Wrigley’s gum. There are 400 question cards in three categories – 200 Pictorial, 100 Themed and 100 ‘Pot Luck’. Each Picture card features full- or part- logo images to identify, coupled with questions relating to the brand. The answers on the Themed cards relate to the headings, such as ‘Birds’ (eg Kiwi Shoe Polish, Penguin, Swan Vestas) and ‘Relatives’ (eg Aunt Bessie’s, Daddies, Uncle Ben’s). Each player is making for the Winning Zone. Each round, the questioner picks a card and asks a player four questions about the logo or product pictured. For every correct answer, the player moves their piece around the coloured board. Progress is straightforward and speedy – everyone loves this game!

Pastors receive community thanks > TOWN CENTRE KETTERING'S street pastors have received thanks from a mother and son following their quick action. During a busy Saturday evening in Kettering’s town centre, a team of street pastors came across a young man experiencing an epileptic seizure on Eskdaill Street and went to his aid. A few days later the street pastors received a phone call from the young man thanking them personally and a thankful email was also received from the young man’s parents.
Two teams of four have been out patrolling Kettering’s streets every Saturday night whatever the weather for the past 10 months from 11pm until 3am. During this period they have helped and supported members of the community, making themselves available to stop and chat as well as listen and help. Councillor Steve Bellamy, portfolio holder for Community and Culture said: "Street pastors have been engaging local people that are using the night time economy and making a
big difference. Street pastors have a calming non-confrontational air about them. They are non judgemental, and are received very well. "We all know people that volunteer and quite often take them for granted. We owe the street pastors a huge thank you for fulfilling just one part of Kettering’s prevention agenda. Their excellent work has a very significant benefit to our local services including the police and the pressures that face our local accident and emergency department."

> TRESHAM COLLEGE A GROUP of Tresham’s catering students will be on their marks and ready to go during the Olympics after they were selected to cater for athletes taking part in London 2012. More than 12 students from Tresham College of Further and Higher Education have already received confirmation that they have been selected to work within the kitchens in and around the Olympic village where sportsmen and women from around the world will be staying during the Olympics and Paralympics this summer. Chef John Fahy, Tutor at Tresham encouraged his students to apply for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity following their recent experiences catering for Cheltenham Races and at Wembley Stadium for concerts and sports events.
John said: “I wanted to offer this opportunity to our students as it is going to be something they will never forget. When people ask in years to come where they were during London 2012, they will be able to say that they were working and feeding gold medallists. "This experience will be yet another venue for our students to add to the CV for future work where they will be using the skills that they have learnt at the Manor Restaurant.” Tresham is one of only a few colleges that will have students working at London 2012 and who are guaranteed to be feeding athletes. John Fahy will be preparing breakfast for the athletes and their families in the athletes’ village together with some of the students, others will be amongst the other Olympic venues within Stratford as chefs and frontof-house staff.

EXTRA ALE & SCRATCHINGS on Father’s Day Two dapper gents. One chesterfield sofa. And a shared penchant for ruby red English ales, the odd packet of pork scratchings and the finest slice of Neapolitan pizza. So pull up a chair, pour yourself a tall drink and let’s share the often indecipherable musings of the modern man. IT’S FAIR TO SAY we live in times of technological wonderment. In this age of internet and iPhone, even the once dreaded task of shopping, for us bloke folk at least, has never been more pleasurable. The modern man can browse through cyber superstores that are blissfully queue free for 24 hours every day. And all this from the comfort of your own chesterfield, whilst still in your dressing gown, or less even, should the mood so take you. Being the self styled couch commentators that we are, this brand of shopping holds a certain appeal. Although fully clothed of course, normally in tweed. That reminded us we had to do a bit of shopping for Father’s Day, so we flipped our laptop lids, stabbed our delightfully buffed and polished digits at the usual buttons but oddly we got no response. The god of Google was not smiling on us that day. Alas overnight there was a spike in the wholesale price of aluminium and as such a febrile den of news-savvy ‘metallurgical re-appropriators’ (as is the politically correct term for thieving scallywags), managed to run off with
most of the local phone mast, thus rendering all internet connection abruptly disabled. So we were forced out into the high street, which sadly has gone the way of Woolies. It turns out that the greater problem is not what to buy, but where to buy it. There were admittedly still some shops dotted amongst the vacant lots, and they would have been fine if we’d have wanted to buy our dear pa a burger, bookie slip or some bargain booze as a token of our affections. With it we headed into the last bastion of Euro wonderment, the coffee house. After a little toing and froing, and a smattering of sign language, we secured our order of authentic Italian coffee in a Spanish titled Grande cup, by a rather pretty Latvian girl. And as we sat at our table with free wireless that also didn’t work, we once again started thinking. Why can’t we have a Man Mal - an entire shopping enclave designed exclusively with masculine needs in mind? The very thought of the shops it might contain got our hearts racing. Or maybe it was the Italian caffeine, or the Latvian girl reaching down to get more milk out the fridge. Shopping for shoes is a perennial pain
in the plimsoll for any man, so how about the Shoeshi Bar? Imagine shopping for your foot wares sitting at the Sushi style conveyor belt, sipping a delightfully hoppy little number whilst an array of loafers, brogues and hush puppies ream before your very eyes. Or then there’s Man-a-cure. No, not a nail bar but a pharmacy strictly for men where you can blissfully browse amongst Tampax-free shelves for the man flu vaccine, beer belly reduction cream and patented ‘Hangover: OVER!’ tablets. But let’s not forget the Make Up Store, where you go to buy presents to make up

with the missus after you have committed a cardinal sin and the outlook is bleak. The products here are graded by severity of offence. Gifts needed to atone for arriving late home from the pub would, for example, be in aisle 1. Inappropriate texting, aisle 2. Inappropriate liaison, aisle 3. It’s the perfect place to reprieve you of your sins, and afford the dog his bed back. Or if you’re not sure what to buy then why not peruse the wonders of the Mantique Boutique; a dazzling array of blokebased curios, vintage weaponry and movie memorabilia. Browse amongst a selection of the intriguing and bizarre, with the proprietor being none other than Sean Connery. You could pick up a nifty little Bond gadget, as used in Goldfinger, for the bargain price of sheven poundsh and sheventy sheven pensh. Of course there would be the Relaxation Zone, as even shopping in the Man Mal would become tiring for any self respecting chap. Here there would be a ‘state of the art’ games arcade, all dutifully paid for with parking revenues, several bars and a giant interweaving roller coaster in place of escalators. Anyway our dreaming subsided as the last wash of coffee disappeared from our cups, and an even better idea ensured. An hour later we reconvened in the local pub, parental company in tow, for a few fine ales and a chat about the state of things with the old boys. Turns out that the best gift that we could give this Father’s Day is some free time. Rather handy in the age of austerity.
With Father’s Day coming up on Sunday 17th June many of us are wracking our brains as to what dads really want this Father’s Day. Old Spice again? War and Peace for the third time – and aren’t the other two gathering dust? From Geek Dad to Chic Dad and quite frankly Still a Big Kid Dad. We’ve rooted out some ideas that are available from top high street, online and catalogue retailers.

Campaign calls for safer wheelchair access Disabled Motoring UK is gearing up to campaign for a change in legislation that will improve the safety of wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAVs). The charity believes it is a moral and human right for people who travel in a wheelchair to be able to purchase a converted vehicle that has been properly tested and is as safe as the original car. The ‘No Compromises!’ safety campaign will urge buyers of wheelchair accessible cars to demand sled testing certificates – the only way to check a vehicle is as safe as possible. The campaign will also seek to change legislation so that only ‘sled tested’ vehicles can be sold. Worryingly, the industry has seen up to 50 per cent of conversions that have passed other less significant tests fail the vital sled test. A sled test is similar to the crash testing seen on TV - a dummy is strapped into a wheelchair within the car, which is then put through head-on collisions to check that both the belts and their fixings are strong enough to withstand a real-life accident and keep the wheelchair user secure.
so that people don’t unknowingly purchase unsafe vehicles. Alongside this we will be educating people to make sure they ask the right questions before purchasing a converted car.” Constables Mobility’s Constables Mobility Managing Director David Constable, one of the experts supporting the campaign, explains: “People who travel in wheelchairs have a right to a vehicle that has been properly tested so they are as safe as possible in the event of an accident. I strongly believe that all companies who convert cars should only be allowed to sell them if they have been successfully tested after conversion – including being sled tested - so the vehicle meets and exceeds the latest European safety standards. It’s a moral and human right to have a car that has been converted safely.”
The reason testing is so vital after conversion to a wheelchair accessible vehicle is because converting a car is a complex process involving significant structural changes to the vehicle such as lowering the floor. If this is not done properly, and by experts, the car may be unsafe.
From 29 April 2012, wheelchair accessible vehicles have to meet both the European standard for the car before it is converted and pass additional tests which check the changes made during the conversion process. However, not every conversion will have passed the same tests and it doesn’t guarantee that sled testing has been carried out.
Helen Dolphin, Director of Policy and Campaigns for Disabled Motoring UK Disabled Motoring, said: “It is amazing that vehicles are being sold that may not be safe for the drivers and wheelchair users and we feel strongly that this must stop. We will be calling on the Government to change legislation

Company car drivers call for better roads Company car drivers want to see more money going into improving roads as the twenty-fourth annual RAC Report on Motoring¹ reveals that 85% of company car drivers do not think taxes are sufficiently reinvested in local roads. The Report also highlights that one third (33%) would support more toll roads to ease rising congestion. The Report into UK motoring behaviour and attitudes reveals frustrations at travel delays are a key concern for company car drivers who want solutions to the issues they face on the roads. Over 70% of respondents said that congestion is getting worse and three quarters (73%) want targeted improvements to local roads to relieve bottlenecks. The Report also shows that business drivers aren’t afraid to put their foot down and see speeding as a lesser crime than their private motoring counterparts. Nearly nine in ten (87%) company car drivers admit to speeding on motorways, compared with less than two thirds (61%) of private motorists. It is no surprise then that business drivers are also more likely to favour no penalty for minor speeding offences - 38% of company car drivers are against speeding fines, versus 29% of private motorists. In addition, nearly three-quarters of company car drivers support different speed limits on similar classes of roads, reflecting the desire of business drivers to get where they need to go, fast. David Bizley, RAC technical director, said: “We recognise that company car drivers are under huge pressure to complete each journey as quickly and efficiently as possible, so the importance of maintaining roads to a high standard and speed restrictions are all key issues for those who drive for business.” “However, it is worrying that such a high number of company car drivers are breaking speed limits and view this as somehow less serious than other motoring offences. Good business must not come at the expense of road safety. “Helping business to keep moving safely is why we welcome the Government consultation on raising the motorway speed limit to 80mph. However, it is important that the limit is raised only on those stretches of motorway where it is appropriate to do so – not all motorways are sufficiently modern
motorists, however they are still feeling the pinch. Nearly half (48%) say they will have to cut down on the amount they drive if fuel prices continue to increase and have admitted to changing their driving style to conserve fuel (49%). As a result of these findings, the RAC is calling on Government to scrap the planned rise in fuel duty in August at a time when drivers are being hit by record fuel prices and are struggling to cope with the impact of high Satellite TV 5x2_Layout 1 30/04/2012 14:37 Page motoring costs. CONGESTION: Going nowhere. or well-designed to handle higher speeds at present. The RAC is also calling for more effective enforcement of speed limits to ensure 90mph does not become the new de facto limit.” Despite flouting speed limits, company car drivers are the least likely of all motorist groups polled by the RAC to take drugs and drive. The requirement by many employers that their drivers have a clean licence may explain why just 1% of company drivers say they have driven under the influence of drugs - 4% lower than the average figure across all motoring groups. The rising cost of motoring is shown to affect company car drivers less than other

EXTRA LETTERS & LOCAL RANTS JUBILEE EVENTS A LOCAL WINNER Dear..EXTRA I was delighted with the success of the fantastic Diamond Jubilee events in both Weldon and Gretton over the bank holiday weekend. In Weldon we held a marching parade in honour of Her Majesty's sixty year reign followed by a day-at-the-races themed tea party complete with a 'Queen for the Day' and the Miss Weldon and Miss Priors Hall Carnival Princesses. In the evening there was a wonderful jazzthemed dance and huge crowds gathered to watch the historic lighting of the beacon. In Gretton there was a vibrant street party with dozens of stalls, family and group party tables and live music provided by a multitude of local musicians. Later in 2012 the Diamond Jubilee and Olympic Year will be commemorated by the planting of a time capsule to be unveiled by the next generation in fifty years' time. What a sight is was seeing the Queen and her family being cheered on at each step of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, even though the Queen was visibly upset after her husband was taken ill after the regatta, she maintained her dignity throughout even forcing a smile when the awful Annie Lennox crucified her own song at the concert, and William and Kate dancing along to the music. Dear..EXTRA The campaign to help scrap VAT on fuel for the air ambulance service is gathering pace. Indeed, my mail bag and Tweets I get on the subject illustrate just how close this appeal is to many peoples’ hearts. Can 8/10 women be wrong?
Budding Trevor: And here’s the news
Amazing but true. Eighty percent of women are wearing the wrong size bra. But why? As busy women we rarely take time out for ourselves. We dutifully have lil ones feet measured at regular intervals, arrange dentist and optician appointments for all, flea treatments for the pets and just buy new underwear when the old falls to bits, or we can’t breathe properly any longer. Famous comedienne Sarah Millican names that ‘taking the bra off at the end of the day’ action as BRT ( bra removal time ) and makes lots of noises in her act to demonstrate the relief in doing so, from twang to crash!! Any fans of Gok Wan will know that shameful moment when he steals a peek in the underwear drawer-how
many shades of grey are there? Therapy for me is sorting the drawer out, that brief ( pun intended ) but sweet moment when order descends, the matching is matched, the grey is evicted and the ridiculous (too small, too cheeky or worse ) tucked away for an more optimistic day. But how many of us suffer from aching shoulders and bad backs. This could be caused by a badly fitting bra. Mastitis and blocked milk ducts when breastfeeding can also be caused by too tight a fit. Any weight change of half a stone either way needs a refit! In the six years that I have been fitting only a handful ( not meant to be a pun but...) have been wearing the right size. Shocking, no just another example of

Improvement Volunteers get down business Teams invited for Northamptonshire corporate sports event all round > CORPORATE GAMES
> ATHLETICS ROUND two of the Midland Senior League Track and Field League saw an improved performance from Kettering, who took third place on a hot day at Corby. The Harriers retain an outside chance of promotion, but it will be very difficult to overhaul Corby and Newport, who fill the top two places. There were some impressive performances from the middle distance runners. Pride of place went to Matt Stewart who smashed through the 2:00 minute barrier in the men's 800m setting his fourth consecutive PB with 1:59.8 to finish third in the A race with a tremendous final bend and closing down second place Dale Willis towards the finishing line. Also in the men's 800 B race Jake Hollins was in impressive form knocking an amazing 10 seconds from his previous best to finish fourth in 2:05.8 with a fine race. Also setting a lifetime best was Josh
Coles who finished third in the men's A 3k with 9:45.3, supported well by David Edwards who finished first in the B race with 10:06.8, with sister Sian also easily winning the women's A 3k in a season's best of 10:06.8. Kayli Walford also ran well in the B race to score a double win with a SB of 11:34.8. In the 1500m, Liam Kirk was in good form to finish fourth in the A race with a new lifetime best of 4:31.1, with David Edwards also finishing fourth in the men's B race 4:39.4. In the women's race, Fran Ashworth and Claudia Kelsall both finished second in the A &B race with 5:20.8 & 5:30.5. In the Women's 800 Abigail Coleman looking for some speed work, also set a new lifetime best with 2:27.1 to finish fourth in the A race, Jess Gordon easily won the B race with 2:30.0. Also competing, over a shorter distance of 400m, was Lauren Mehmet who recorded 69.0 for third position, with Edward Cherry coming fifth in the men's A race with 53.4.

SPORT and business get the chance to mix when companies put willing volunteers forward for the Northants Corporate Games' 20 Companies: 12 Events challenge. Northamptonshire Sport and its partners are challenging companies in the county to enter a team into the games, which will see up to 20 companies compete in 12 events. Events include archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, fencing, football, golf, hockey, sailing, table tennis, touch rugby and volleyball. Participants don’t have to be experts as each session is run by the respective sport's Governing Body and local clubs. Coaches will guide groups through the rules and help
them plan their tactics. Jo Danvers, Northamptonshire Sport Partnership said “We are looking for people who either already enjoy these sports or would like to try something new. It will be a great team building opportunity and a chance to have some fun. You never know, we might discover a new Ben Ainslie or Jessica Ennis.” 20 Companies: 12 Events, which started earlier this month, is open to all Northamptonshire workplaces, with the target of at least 20 companies taking part in as many sports as they choose. There is a charge from £20 upwards for each team, depending on how many sports they decide to try. Thirds find first victory > CRICKET KETTERING thirds made the trip to Higham still waiting for their first victory of the new season. Richard Mitcham started proceedings with a head-high beamer to unsettle the opening batsman, before following it up with a corker that Rob Smith could only edge to Richard Clark, who took a fabulous one handed catch to give Kettering the early breakthrough. Aled David, bowling with an unerring line and length, ensured there was no easy runs coming, building pressure that eventually led to a run-out. Higham batsmen Jonathan Hardwick and Daniel Vaughan then launched a rearguard action, looking solid in defence and punishing the short and wide balls well, before Lee
Sims removed Hardwick. Andrew Mooney threatened to cut loose with some booming cuts and pulls, until Sims bowled him fearsome bouncer followed by a yorker next ball that saw him lose his wicket. Higham skipper Vaughan had looked rock solid throughout this period, but some inspired bowling by Milan Castka accounted for both him and Richard Downes in quick succession to put the visitors in control. Sims was in the midst of his best spell for some time, picking up a further two wickets. Castka trapped Jamie Russell lbw, before Sims and Aled David accounted for 10 and 11. Adam Spencer and Glen Latham started cautiously against some testing bowling. The score had reached 22 before Latham was trapped in front for 9. Matt Earl flayed
three quick boundaries before being cleaned up for 14 and Phil Coward made 5 before playing over a full toss. When David suffered a similar fate, the home side sniffed a chance. Thankfully Spencer played an innings that combined stoicism and luck, playing watchfully against the wily Andrew Mooney. At the other end young Ben Latham showed a cool head, playing the situation perfectly with patience and skill, and ensuring there were no major alarms as the target got closer. With 7 still needed, Adam's long vigil came to an end on 58 as a pearler from Smith took out his off stump. However he barely had time to take off his pads before Richard Clark had finished the job, striking two boundaries (with a dropped catch in between) to see Kettering over the line.
