Council invites public to comment on proposals for planning > Borough

In Short New development and its effects will have an impact on everyone. Kettering Borough Council is inviting the public to have their say on new planning development before any final decisions are reached. KETTERING Borough Council has called on residents to help set the tone for the place they live in as it invites responses to one of its key planning documents. The document sets out where new development might go, how the environment is protected and what design standards are right for this area, and, once adopted, will contain planning policies which will guide all future development and decision making on all planning applications across the whole of the Borough. Options put forward in the document propose the allocation of land for housing, employment, retail and leisure and community facilities. The document also looks at design, affordable housing, protection of the open countryside and protection of environmental assets. The consultation on the Site Specific Proposals Local Development Document (LDD) opened on March 12 and people across the borough are invited to comment on or before April 23.

The Borough Council have already held successful events on the Horsemarket in Kettering where 138 people came along to talk to officers and councillors about the proposals, and in Burton Latimer, Rothwell and Desborough. In addition, documents can be viewed on the Kettering Borough Council website. All members of the public, stakeholders and interested parties are invited to speak to officers and make written comments with regards to any of the widespread and varied options which are contained within the document. Cath Bicknell, Kettering Borough Council’s Head of Development Services said: “This is a great opportunity to help shape the Borough’s future. Please take a few minutes to look at the options on our website and send your comments to the Council.” Councillor Russell Roberts, Leader of Kettering Borough Council said: “This is our way of working with the community to ensure that we all have a clear understanding of where, if any, future developments will take place. This is very important and this document will help to shape the future of Kettering Borough. It is our chance to influence where the jobs, houses and open spaces might be.” The consultation closes at 5.30pm on April 23, 2012. Visit the council website at www.kettering.gov.uk

Artists and independent craftspeople will get the chance to shine in May when a Burton Latimer shop does its bit to support the national Craft and Design Month initiative. Pottery in the Shires, takes place at Burton Latimer Civic Centre on Friday, May 4 and Saturday, May 5, offering visitors the chance to choose hand-made and individually designed products as an alternative to cheap imports. NEW OPPORTUNITIES: Corby Kilns promotes local craftspeople and artists Bob Aves and Julie Houghton, the owners of Corby Kilns, said: “At Corby Kilns, we are supporting Craft and Design Month in May as we recognise the importance of being able to choose handmade or individually designed and created products. In our shop we sell products made by our customers – all unique products, hand-made ceramics and glass items. “Pottery in the Shires will be all about pottery and ceramics, from beautiful bowls and functional ware, to decorative and simply delightful pieces and we are pleased to provide an opportunity for designers and makers to shine in the spotlight.” Pottery in the Shires will open with a preview at 7pm on Friday, May 4, where refreshments will be provided, opening at 9 am on Saturday, until 4 pm. The event is free of ON SHOW: Two pieces from the Pottery in the Shires event charge to enter.

Opening times more accessible > Town Centre KETTERING Library will be joining libraries throughout the county in opening their doors on Sundays, starting on April 22. The changes were implemented on April 16, so now the library will open on Sunday afternoons from 1pm to 4pm. During the week, the library will continue to open at 9am but will cut short its weekday opening by one hour, closing at 6pm instead of 7pm. Saturday hours will remain 9am to 5pm. The changes follow a consultation period in which users were asked

about library services. It is thought that the Sunday opening will make the libraries more accessible to those who can’t visit during the week. Included in the extended opening times will be improved access to the council’s self-service and online services and the opportunity to make Blue Badge and bus pass applications.

It was the culmination of a project involving all primary children and which focused on the National Science Week theme of World in Motion, and included High Fliers - a paper aeroplane competition in which pupils had to design a paper aeroplane and write an explanation of how they tested it, how it worked and any changes to the design they made. There was also a visit from the Hands-on-Science agency, which helped pupils to explore the science behind rocket engineering. In addition, parents where invited in to science lessons to get involved with their children’s learning. Year 2 and Year 4 have kick-started links with the Secondary Phase, which has seen pupils go over and work in the labs to create blood (Year 2) and carry out an investigation of micro-organisms and yeast (Year 4). Kate Edwards, science co-ordinator for KSA’s primary phase, said: “Science has an impact on everything we do and it’s about building an understanding among our children that the study of science doesn’t happen just

New track offers riders thrills and excitement BMX track built to provide good fun with safety in mind >Rockingham Road

In Short When children want to play, they’ll find a way. Now Rockingham Road Pleasure Park has taken the informal cycle track and turned it into a safe but exciting place for BMX riders to play. A NEW BMX cycle track has been completed at the Rockingham Road Pleasure Park to replace an existing informal track that local children had created. The need for a new track was highlighted as a key development project in the master plan that won the park coveted Green Flag status. The park’s development plan also includes the installation of an outdoor gym which will include up to seven pieces of specialist fitness equipment. Local residents have been asked for their views on both schemes and the Friends of Rockingham Road Pleasure Park are seeking to secure the funding for the scheme. Valerie Hitchman, Head of Community Services at Kettering Borough Council, said: “We are delighted to be able develop the new track to replace the informal one that was there, as it raised safety concerns. The new track complies with ROSPA safety requirements.” Cllr Steve Bellamy Portfolio holder for Community at Kettering Council added: “The bid to create the outdoor gym is being led by the local Friends of Rockingham Road Pleasure Park. We are delighted to see local people taking such a lead in developing their park, this is real

prehistoric: Chainsaw artist Peter Leadbeater shows off the wooden dinosaur to Sarah Parr Ground Services Manager with Kettering Borough Council.

> Desborough A NEW play area in Desborough, based on a Flintstones theme, has received a new addition in the form of specially carved dinosaur. The carving was undertaken by chainsaw artist Peter Leadbeater, a local, professional chainsaw artist who makes large scale sculptures hewn from single pieces of English green oak. He has made the new piece to fit in with the existing play area, adding to the prehistoric theme under which inmates from Woodhill Prison in Milton Keynes also made a large outdoor play mosaic based on snakes and ladders. The site, which is located at the junction of Dunkirk Avenue and Rushton Road, was installed by Kettering Borough Council after they received a £49,000 grant from the Department of Children, School and Families, and after consultation with Desborough Town Council. Children from Havelock Junior

School took part in the development of how the play area would look and have given their views of the outline proposals. They have also supported Desborough Town councillors in choosing the winning design. Nina Lloyd, eight, said: “The playground that was there before wasn’t any good but the new one is so much fun. I can’t wait to see the new dinosaur.” Councillor Steve Bellamy, portfolio holder for the Community said: “This is the third Playbuilder site we have developed in the borough in the past two years, which has brought in an extra £150,000 for children’s play. It’s a fact of life that neither local or national government will be willing to fund this sort of tremendous facility in the future which makes it even more fitting to win this money for play in the borough. This is a new type of play area that fits well into this semi rural location the local kids will find it really exciting.”

A NEW homework club will start at Rothwell Library in May, providing somewhere for children aged eight to 13 to study after school during term time. Further information is available by ringing 01536 711880.

Town’s double celebration > Sheep Street NEXT year sees the double centenary of Sir Alfred East, and of the Art Gallery that was named in his honour, and the Friends of the Art Gallery and Museum are already preparing for a double celebration. The Alfred East Art Gallery was designed by John Alfred Gotch and was opened in July 1913, just a few weeks before Sir Alfred East died at his London home. Upon his death, Sir Alfred’s body was returned to Kettering and he lay in state in the Gallery, surround-

ing by pictures he had presented to the town, and crowds of several thousands visited to pay their last respects. Later this month, the Friends of Kettering Art Gallery and Museum will be holding a public forum to discuss the double centenary and the future development of the town’s cultural and heritage quarter. Chaired by Philip Hollobone MP, the meeting will take place at the gallery on Sheep Street, Kettering, at 8pm on April 26 and members of the public are invited to share their views and ideas.

Apprentice numbers continue to grow

Volunteers book places to help out library Work gets started on replacing Kettering library flooring > Sheep Street VOLUNTEERS from across Kettering have offered to lend some weight - literally - to the refurbishment of the town’s main library. As reported in Kettering Extra earlier this month, a £1million appeal has been launched by the Friends of Kettering Library to carry out vital repairs to restore the building, opened in 1904, to its former glory. Northamptonshire County Council has got the campaign off to a welcome start by providing £250,000 for the restoration of the floor - an original parquet surface that has deteriorated significantly over the years and which is to be completely replaced. It is hoped that the floor can be replaced with the minimum disruption to library services, and so it will be taken up and re-laid in sections, in three stages. At each stage, a team of volunteers have offered to come in and move desks, shelves and books around, so that one area at a time can be cleared.

WORK BEGINS: Volunteers are helping prepare the way for work at Kettering Library Anne Lovely, Principal Librarian, said: “The original floor is a beautiful parquet floor, but it is simply beyond repair. It has been covered in carpet and, lately, safety tape and temporary shelving to warn visitors of trip hazards and to cover the worst affected areas. “Now, work is about to begin and we have had lots of offers of help, shifting things around and clearing the area to be worked on, while still keeping services going.

“It’s wonderful that people are ready to help. Once the floor is done, we are hoping that the original doorway, on Sheep Street, will be restored and then opened again, rather than visitors having to use the side entrance.” Work on the floor is expected to take around six months, with the library planning and old-fashioned tea dance to mark the completion of the new floor.

Music and laughter for Kettering patients for 30 fantastic years

Appeal moves a step closer

Hospital recognises work of long-service David the radio host

> Wicksteed Park AN appeal to buy a new mini-bus for children with disabilities in one of Europe’s poorest countries moved a step closer with a charity concert at Wicksteed Park. Organised on behalf of the Moldova Charity Mission, the concert featured percussion guitarist Jonny Martin, Peter Bultitude as Phil Collins, and the band The Rogues, all the artists giving their time for nothing. The concert raised £1,267 and a further £1000 has been donated since then, with the organisers hoping to eventually raise between £10,000 and £12,000 to buy a mini-bus for the charity’s day centre in the town of Straseni. Anyone wishing to give to the minibus appeal or who knows of a decent bus that the charity could purchase should call 01536 515776.

> General hospital HOSPITAL patients often need cheering up and hospital radio plays a vital part in doing that, and in providing a link with the world outside. One Kettering man has devoted 30 years of his life to supporting hospital radio- an achievement has been equalled on only two previous occasions in the station’s 41-year history – by Harry Johnson, who has served for 36 years, and Fred Radford, who has served for 32 David Skelham, 57, was presented with a long-service certificate by Kettering General Hospital Chief Executive Lorene Read. Mr Skelham, who works as a healthcare assistant at St Mary’s Hospital in Kettering, said: “It is a very interesting job and you are making a real difference to patients who may be feeling somewhat lonely, depressed or under stress. “I find that people really value having a chat with you and a chance to hear their favourite record when they are feeling a bit low. “It’s also lots of fun being a hospital radio presenter and you get the chance to play a very wide variety of music for people.” Mr Skelham, who is married to Sarah, has worked as a presenter and as ward visitor collecting requests for patients. He is currently a presenter every Tuesday evening between 8.30pm and 10pm.

Students take up exhibition space > Market Place A group of Tresham students will take their art work to the high street when they put on a free exhibition under the name of their new collective, Studio 202. Students from the Foundation Degree in Fine Art will take up space in the unoccupied buildings in Kettering’s Market Place from April 28 to May 4 between 10am and 4pm. Kettering Borough Council are loaning

the collective the building to house the exhibition. Studio 202 will showcase a diverse collection of contemporary works, in a wide range of media, with different perspectives and priorities. This is not the first time that Tresham students who are studying this course, run in partnership with the University of Northampton, have taken their artwork to the high street. Last year, students on the same course held an exhibition in an unoccupied shop on the Ketter-

Holly Daniels who is also a part of Studio 202 said: “This is an amazing opportunity for us to get our work out there and seen by a wide audience.” Graham Keddie, lecturer for the course said: “This exhibition is one part of the professional practice development that students engage with. It enables them to step into the professional career they have researched and chosen during the course and in preparation for earning a living when

THE Battle of Naseby - a pivotal clash of the English Civil War and one of the most significant battles in English history - has arrived at Kettering’s Manor House Museum. The 1645 battle is being revisited in an exhibition of battlefield archaeology and historic artefacts which looks at the differing armies involved in the battle and how the battle was fought. The Battle of Naseby saw Parliament’s New Model Army defeat the Royalist forces of King Charles I so overwhelmingly that the King’s attempt to wage war was effectively over. Items on display, on loan from Market Harborough Museum, include four swords, a cannon ball, coins and two sentimental love tokens. Many of these objects have been drawn from the collection of the Naseby Battlefield Project, which has been investigating the site since 2001. The exhibition is now open and runs until Saturday, May 26. The Museum is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10am - 4.45pm, admission is free.

EXTRA LETTERS & LOCAL RANTS READ ALL ABOUT IT LATEST TWEETS...

Just a couple of things about the first issue which I think are perhaps worthy of your consideration:Why, in the 'Locals are the face of Extra' item, do you refer to all four of these 'locals' by their status, namecheck and interview three of them, show photographs of two of them and make no further reference to the luckless 'family butcher'? In his position, I'd be a bit fed up! Also, this is a fortnightly publication and although the first issue is dated 4 April I didn't see it on sale until yesterday, when I discovered that both competitions had a closing date of 11 April - not a very satisfactory situation in that even at the modest price of 50p the opportunity to enter these should be available to all your readers, not just the early birds. All in all, however, I was pretty impressed with the paper and hope you will take these criticisms in the spirit in which they are intended. Regards Una Adams.

this, we are a small team who are working hard to bring local news and features of interest to local people. We are slowly getting there.

Editor - Thank very much for your letter, we unfortunately need to have a competiotion cut off so that we can print the answer or winner in the next publication – but we are looking into this to see if we could extend. Extra is available in newstands and supermarkets all over the county – we are sorry you couldn’t find a copy earlier but probbaly very good news for us as possibly your retail newsagent had sold out! and had to re-order!

Extra last week and must say am very impressed. The newspaper is obviously written both by and for people who live in our area, and is a really good read. Being a relative newcomer to the area, I had no idea just how much is going on in our town, and it was good to get an unbiased, well-reported insight into a number of local issues. I hope this will mean that in future our community will be better informed on matters which affect us and our way of life – and that residents and people working here will also be able to give their opinions via the paper. I was also impressed with the ‘magazine quality’ of the various articles towards the back, it’s almost like having both a paper and a glossy supplement all in one publication. Congratulations, and I hope the next issues will be equally interesting and worthwhile. Keep it up! Ray.

I picked up a copy of the Corby

Editor -Thank you very much for

Dear..EXTRA I would like to complain about the lack of parent and baby spaces in the council car parks in Kettering town centre. Every car park I go to there are an abundance of Disabled spaces, quite right too, but it’s a search for the parent and baby spaces. It can be hard work getting a little one in and out of a car and you need the car doors wide open to secure your child properly. I fear scratching a neighbouring car in the smaller spaces. I haven’t found any in the Cornmarket car park, the car park behind the post office and Marks and Spencer’s or the School lane car park-why is this? Do the council want us to take our trade elsewhere? Perhaps a clue to all the closed shops in the town centre if you are deterring the mums pound! A Kettering Mum

Editor - I quite understand the content of your letter and sympathize with your situation. I would be interested to know more and perhaps we could adopt this topic as an Extra campaign.

Date night or disaster?

ORRR: Butter wouldn’t melt

EXPERTS tell us that we should keep the romance in our relationship by having Date Nights, time spent focussing on the two of you. Is this the stuff of dreams or reality? First the logistics of a sitter, why is this always the woman’s job? The actual evening doesn’t start well when you are stressed by having to change twice. Baby sick and leaking milk - Chanel it ain’t! Add to this the depression you feel as you can’t get into the outfit you wanted to wear, realise it’s the first time you have looked properly into a mirror for ages (where did those wrinkles come from!), and can you afford to eat out once you have shelled out for a babysitter? Remember when

getting ready for a date used to take hours, if not days, of preparation and discussing what to wear, what to talk about and what was going to happen? The post mortem afterwards with friends, happy days. Finally you make it out the door, stressed, and spend journey discussing if sitter is going to be OK? All goes well at first (although doesn’t the OH look tired) and you start to relax a little. But this new focus of your life (and that’s no bad thing) slowly starts to creep back into the conversation and the rest of the evening passes talking about the little darling/s. Well why not! You dreamed of having them, have wasted hours gazing at them as babes, and still pass time wistfully

thinking about their future. Well its 9pm, you are both shattered and turn down dessert to rush home and check all is well. Bank balanced emptied on meal and sitter, you both crawl into bed exhausted. Romantic? not really. Exhausting and expensive, and energy and spare cash don’t tend to be in abundance in the early days of parenthood, if ever. But you tried, and my view is that the trying is important. It doesn’t have to be a meal out, even a cup of tea; just the two of you alone can be special if you try. It’s the trying which will make a difference to the daily grind, and that’s where you will find the romance. Clare owns Mocha Mama at the Glendon Farm Complex, Kettering and will be writing every issue. www.mocha-mama.co.uk

THE STORY of St George and the legendary dragon has been told to children over centuries, but visitors to Kenilworth Castle’s patriotic celebration will be joined by a brand new largerthan-life reptile, as English Heritage unveils its new dragon! The fearsome new dragon joined a respected line of dragons that have graced English Heritage’s re-enactments over the years, each putting in a good fight against the noble knight, St George. This year’s event will see the dragon pitted against a St George of some pedigree, played by historic re-enactor and swordsman, Mark Vance, in a thrilling combat show! “It takes a special type of dragon to die two or three times a day in front of an audience of thousands, but we think we’ve found just the character for our St George’s Day pageant at Kenilworth Castle,” comments English Heritage’s regional events manager, Karen Pike. “We are confident that this dragon will give our St George a run for his money, as he should be more nimble than our last wyvern, which means even more thrills for the audience!” Alongside storytelling – not only about the traditional legend, but also a legend that reveals Coventry as St George’s original home - and the ultimate confrontation between George and the dragon, visitors will also be able to wander around a medieval living history encampment, where they will meet all kinds of characters from the 15thcentury who are taking a break from their usual toils to enjoy the celebrations of the feast of St George, and take in the delicious smells of food fit for a knight cooking over an open fire! The weekend will also feature hands-on activities and trails, plus a chance to look at and handle some of the armour worn by a medieval knight. St George and the Dragon is part of Kenilworth Castle’s medieval season of events and activities being held between April and September. St George’s DayMonday April 23rd Free entry by George! Experience a medieval weekend at Bolsover Castle on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 April. There will be knights in combat, living history displays and a dragon themed hobby-horse joust for children. There is also free entry for anyone named George or Georgina.

For England and St George Local chilli growers who produce some of the hottest in the world, including the Ghost Chilli and Trinidad Scorpion, will be selling a range of products both days and there will be sausage making and butchery demonstrations on offer on Sunday. Kids can take part in informal hands-on activities, including how to make bouquet garnis, churn butter and hand mill wheat to make bread. This unmissable event also includes the chance to see Prince Malik's Lancers in fast and furious horseback displays recalling the glory days of the Raj as they demonstrate their amazingly accurate tent pegging skills - at a flat out gallop.

Victorian ladies will demonstrate the art of side saddle riding, as they jump a course including a table set for dinner complete with diners - before taking on the gents in a race against the clock. Always a crowd pleaser, dashing mounted knights will demonstrate their skills - and the bravery of their horses - in medieval jousting displays where they collide at speeds of up to 40 mph. The main event each afternoon sees gallant St George resplendent in shining armour astride his noble steed as he attempts to slay a fearsome green dragon. Supporters can wave the flag for their favourite as they cheer for the valiant patron saint or the feisty firebreathing dragon, in their display of courage and patriotism. Away from the main arena, there's plenty more historic action. A colourful living history encampment will provide a rolling programme of entertainment throughout each day including a fire breathing show, a bed of nails, plus minstrels and fools from medieval times. There's an authentic historic market to wander and children and adults can watch and take part in a host of other period activities including an interactive dragon puppet theatre and a mock children's battle.

Visitors will be able to see knights in full armour and explore the encampment where they can meet the knights and ladies and learn more about medieval life. Children can test their skill in the dragon themed hobby horse joust and take part in squire training before joining the children’s battle. Watch as St George is armed for combat and hear the story of St George in a Mummers play. Take part in a fun trail around the grounds in search of the dragons. Find them all and solve the puzzle to become a certified Dragon Hunter!” To celebrate St.George’s day English Heritage is offering free entry to Bolsover Castle on 21 & 22 April to anyone named George or Georgina, with proof of identity.

Fight or flight?

Choosing an Airline is no longer a one click on line solution with almost every supplier applying additional charges to their apparent cheap flights. Online check In, hidden levy's, checked in baggage and that's not even including the enhanced features of Priority Boarding, Extra Legroom, Emergency Exit Seats and Extra Luggage Allowance. You are then asked if you would like any extra products or insurance, and if you decide to visit the golf course or the slopes your experience isn't finished there with additional fees for these. This does however come at a price, a cheaper flight. Read the terms and conditions and always have travel insurance whether it be from the airlines or from another supplier.

All-New Ford Escape provides you with more towing power than the competition Due to it’s Lean Yet Strong EcoBoost Engine

The all-new Ford Escape’s 2.0-ltr EcoBoost® engine provides up to 3,500 pounds of towing capability – best in class among small turbocharged SUVs, and as much as the outgoing 3.0-litre V6 engine. The smaller engine provides higher efficiency without sacrificing power. With trailer sway control, the all-new Ford Escape can tow two personal watercraft on a trailer or a small boat, with no worry for the driver. Packing 240 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque, the optional 2.0-litre EcoBoost® engine in the all-new 2013 Ford Escape enables the vehicle to tow 3,500 pounds – best in class among small SUVs with turbocharged four-cylinder engines. 2.0-litre EcoBoost® engine delivers the ultimate combination of fuel economy, performance and capability that SUV customers with active lifestyles need in today’s environment of record-high fuel prices.

The next closest competitor, the Volkswagen Tiguan, has a tow rating of just 2,200 pounds, while turbocharged versions of Kia Sportage and Acura RDX have tow ratings of 2,000 pounds and 1,500 pounds respectively. Escape’s greater towing capability is roughly equal to two jet skis or a snowmobile and the trailer they ride on. The ability to carry greater loads will save Escape drivers both time and fuel by reducing the number of trips needed. Travel is also made safer with trailer sway control, a class-exclusive feature among small SUVs with turbocharged four-cylinder engines. The 2.0-litre EcoBoost® engine replaces the 3.0-litre V6 engine in the current Escape with no loss of performance and with fuel economy to be higher than the V6’s 19 mpg city, 25 mpg highway EPA rating. “Smaller-displacement engines have a fundamental efficiency advantage,” said Roger Maynard, Powertrain supervisor for the 2013 Ford Escape. “These inherent efficiencies are improved with the EcoBoost technology of direct fuel injection and turbocharging.” The all-new Escape will be available with a choice of three fourcylinder engines. In addition to the 2.0-litre EcoBoost® EcoBoost, Escape will be offered with a 1.6-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder rated at 177 horsepower and a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder cranking out 171 horsepower. All three engines are mated to a fuelsaving six-speed automatic transmission. Escape also features EPAS – electric power-assisted steering – a fuel-saver as well. EcoBoost has been a popular choice among customers since the EcoBoost V6 engine was introduced in 2009 in the Ford Taurus SHO and Lincoln MKS. Last year, Ford sold more than 127,000 EcoBoost-equipped vehicles. Using some of the same technologies found in diesel engines, EcoBoost can improve fuel economy by as much as 20 percent over larger, conventional engines. This year, Ford is expanding its EcoBoost engine technology to not only Escape but Fusion as well. These engines are fundamental to the Ford strategy of providing technologically advanced, high-output, smaller-displacement powertrains that deliver exceptional fuel economy and uncompromised performance for millions of drivers around the world. By next year, more than 90 percent of Ford’s North American lineup will be available with EcoBoost technology. Ford holds more than 125 patents on this engine technology.

Top car choices for sons and daughters Predicting who will buy which type of car has always been difficult for vehicle manufacturers, but nevertheless they do not make cars without knowing the target market and matching each model to specific demographic groups. There are naturally exceptions, but generally demographics play a huge part in how new models of cars are marketed. Large saloon and estate cars are usually aimed at families and are often driven by Dads. Mums tend to be less concerned with visual appeal and performance so are likely to choose MPVs or SUVs for the security that a bigger car offers. As people get older they are more inclined to drive a car that is reliable with cheaper running costs and perhaps some extra space for trips out with the grandchildren. Sons and Daughters. The young male driver is likely to go for a car which is both sporty and cool but this will depend on how much money they or their parents have available and their restrictions on what they will permit their sons to drive given safety concerns. Daughters often choose cars that are smaller and easier to drive, with phone devices and music being a priority. Naturally these are broad generalisations and stereotyping people in terms of which cars they are likely to purchase by sex or age could easily attract criticism, yet this seems to work for the car manufacturing industry. Using these demographics and looking at vehicles currently on the market we have come up with some suggestions for parents who are thinking about purchasing a car for their sons or daughters, some of which are cheap and others less so. The Citroen DS3 came onto the market in 2010 and since then has won many prestigious awards for its style and performance in the supermini range. French manufactured, this car was the primary model of the premium DS line. Citroen have long been renowned for their outstanding diesel and THP petrol engines both in terms of performance and running costs. The DS3 can be customised with a whole range of technology including an MP3/CD player, cruise control and LED running lights. However, the style options that are available with this car really make it a popular choice. There is a wide and diverse range of exteriors to choose from together with purchasers being able to select contrasting roof and wing mirror colours. Also available are alloy wheels and wheel caps. The DS3 sits in the more expensive end of the market but is hard to beat for style and performance.Suzuki SwiftAn absolutely fantastic supermini, the Suzuki manufactured Swift will match perfectly with the image that most young male drivers want to create. Despite being relatively compact it does have a magnificent sporty look and the latest models have more gadgetry than the previous range. Technology includes a USB port, Bluetooth and a CD player and the style is guaranteed to impress even the most discerning of peers. With very economic running costs and a variety of engine sizes to choose from, the Swift has great performance and has attained the Euro NCAP maximum 5 stars for safety due to its ESP (Electronic Stability Programme) which is standard across the range, antiwhiplash front seats and additional safety kit. Ford Ka The Ford Ka has been in the marketplace for several years and is particularly popular with female drivers making it an ideal choice for a daughter’s first car.Wide rear haunches defined the previous model of the Ka, but the latest model is much more dynamic and stylishle and owners can add chrome inserts and stripes if desired, including congestion charges. As first cars go, you can guarantee that your son or daughter will be attracted to these models .

Vauxhall Ampera: the first real-world solution to electric car ownership Taking its lead from the 2007 Flextreme and GTC concept cars the Ampera takes Vauxhall’s award winning design language into the EV segment. Distinctive ‘boomerang’ headlamp housings – a new element of the Vauxhall’s design language – are a clear Ampera identifier, as is its prominent grille and bold Vauxhall Griffin. Every aspect of this revolutionary car has been designed and analysed for efficiency, making it one of the most aerodynamic, energy-conserving vehicles on the market. “The Ampera takes Vauxhall’s new design language into the electric vehicle segment and it redefines how such cars look as well as perform,” said British-born Mark Adams, Vice President of Design at Opel/Vauxhall. “We have focused on giving the Ampera a visual appeal that’s as strong and compelling as its driving dynamics and efficiency.” Inside, the Ampera is de-

signed to reflect the unique, ground-breaking nature of its propulsion system. The cabin takes Vauxhall’s distinctive ‘wing’ front fascia design to the next level, with two colour displays and touch-screen functionality now replacing conventional instrument dials and controls. Futuristic, easy to use and intelligent, the driver interface of the Ampera combines stylish execution with innovative functionality. The cabin offers all the space, comfort, and convenience features you would expect from a premium compact car: five-door Flexibility, comfortable accommodation for four adults, and a load carrying capacity of more than 300 litres. The battery pack is located low down in the centre of the car, which enables the use of flatfolding rear seat-backs. The Ampera’s impressive, ground-hugging stance is created by wide front and rear tracks (1,551 / 1,572mm), with sleek, low bodywork wrapping 17-inch, five-spoke alloy

wheels positioned at the outer edges of the wheel-arches. The sweeping windscreen/ roof-line flows over a glasshouse which is stretched by a black shoulder line under the side windows diving forward of the A-pillar. The boomerang motifs are slashed vertically into the deep front fascia, with the black cut-outs housing iceblue LED daytime running lights, powerful bi-halogen headlamps and front fog lamps. The lower portions of the boomerang elements frame an air intake that mirrors the shape of the signature Vauxhall grille above it. A black cut-out in the rear bumper fascia echoes the shape of the front air intake, and combines with vertical slots in the side panels to give the rear of the Ampera a sporty character to match its dramatic frontal styling. The high rear deck features a flat spoiler integrated into the tailgate above narrow tail lamp units, which are underlined by a chrome bar – with

a prominent Vauxhall Griffin – that visually stretches the width of the vehicle. The wedgelike profile is emphasise d by the black shoulder line which is subtly aligned with the front and rear light units. The exterior colour choice comprises seven finishes: Black and White solids, Grey, Silver and Blue metallic colours, and Red and White premium finishes. The Ampera’s sleek looks also encapsulate excellent aerodynamics to help maximise driving range and lower emissions still further. Opel/ Vauxhall engineers and designers worked together to ensure the Ampera cleaves the air as efficiently as possible. The success of their work is reflected in an exception-

ally low aerodynamic drag co-efficient. By reducing the energy needed to overcome air resistance, they have added an estimated eight miles to the car’s battery driving range, and 50 miles to its total extended range. An aggressive rake on the windshield and rear screen helps reduce turbulence and drag, while airflow around the front fascia and doormounted rear-view mirrors has been optimised. In the rear, sharp edges and the carefully designed spoiler control airflow. Those vertical slots

in the bumper also create a clean point of separation for air passing around the side of the car. Malcolm Ward, Ampera chief designer and Opel/Vauxhall Director Exterior Design, said: “The vertical slots at the outer edge of the rear bumper not only emphasise the wide track and stance, but also serve an important aerodynamic function. By providing clean airflow separation, they help reduce aerodynamic drag. The long, thin tail lamps also enhance the Ampera’s high-tech looks.”

Matthew runs before he walks

Fundraising efforts in aid of two charities > Kettering

JUST after a week after competing in the London Marathon, Kettering Harriers coach Matthew Pelszok will be walking around Kettering Athletics track for 20 hours 12 minutes to celebrate both the London Olympics and to raise money for two charities. Matthew expects to be joined on his walk by other members of Kettering Town Harriers as part of the club’s family fun day. One of the reasons Matthew is attempting the fundraising feat is to support the Ron Pickering Memorial Trust which is supporting his marathon run. The Fund is dedicated to assisting aspiring young athletes who have shown by their attitude and dedication that they possess the qualities which will ensure the growth and protection of sport. It’s a cause close to Matthew’s heart through his commitment to athletics locally and nationally. He’s also walking for Cancer Research UK which has helped both Matthew’s parents in their fight with cancer. His father has had cancer for the past six years and his mum was diagnosed in 2011. To support his fundraising efforts, Matthew is inviting Kettering people to donate raffle prizes, as he’s running a raffle where everyone who sponsors him a minimum of £5 gets entered into the hat to win one of many great prizes donated by local companies. Kettering Town Harriers will be putting on entertainment on the day, which is open to all members of the public. Attractions include free Aviva athletics coaching, a barbecue with meat sponsored by Paul Harris Family Butchers in Kettering, and a spots and stripes event sponsored by Cadburys. The fun starts at 9am and will go on until midnight, with a party atmosphere at the end of the day. To find out more about Matthew’s fundraising activities, go to www.matthew2012.moonfruit.com

Hosepipe ban advice for sports clubs Document to help keep pitches and courts green > County CLUBS struggling to keep pitches in good condition during the hosepipe ban have been offered vital advice from Northamptonshire Sport in conjunction with Sport England. It is thought that around four out of every 10 outdoor sports pitches in England will be affected by the restrictions. With water crucial to maintaining the quality and safe performance of many outdoor surfaces, governing bodies of sports have come together with Sport England to put together a document that offers advice on how to maintain pitches and courts effectively during drought conditions; making the best use of rainfall when it does occur; managing the use of pitches to reduce the risk of damage; using water more effectively and working with the water companies to negotiate possible exemptions. The document will not only support sports clubs directly affected by the hosepipe ban, but will also encourage clubs outside the ban area to use the limited water more effectively and to make their facilities more resilient, which will help ensure their longevity. Current legislation only provides very limited exemptions for sports facilities, such as for staging national and

Nominate projects for national award > County TIME is running out to nominate those who work hard to get more young people involved in sports coaching sessions. In June, awards will be held for Sportivate Project and Sport Maker of the Year and the organisers are looking for nominations in Northamptonshire. In the Sportivate Project of the Year category, the organisers are looking for providers or deliverers of exceptional Sportivate projects that have ensured that as many participants as possible have been engaged, retained and then successfully transferred into sporting roles. They are also looking for examples of either outstanding coaches or inspirational participants or those who

show young people or club development success stories or who have worked with either hard to reach or older participants from Sportivate target participants. Anyone who knows of a Sportivate Project or who has delivered a Sportivate Project that fits the criteria should send an email with the project details, deliverer contact details and an introduction of no more than 300 words about the project to jdanvers@ northamptonshire.gov.uk by Friday April 20. All nominations will be reviewed by a panel and the final Sportivate Project of The Year application will be put forward to the regional rounds. One per region will then be put forward to the national awards.

Charles Johnston, Sport England’s Property Director, said: “We have been supporting the excellent lead taken by a number of governing bodies by working with them on the impact of climate change on pitch sports. The recent announcement of hosepipe bans has reinforced the importance of this area of work. I am, therefore, pleased that we can jointly release this new guidance to help clubs to play their part during this period of water shortage and control.” Bruce Cruse, National Funding and Facilities Manager at the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), said: “ECB welcomes this initiative from Sport England. The use of poles in Nordic Walking means the upper body muscles are used as well as the legs as the poles help to propel the walker along.
