Council invites public to comment on proposals for planning > Borough

In Short New development and its effects will have an impact on everyone. Kettering Borough Council is inviting the public to have their say on new planning development before any final decisions are reached. KETTERING Borough Council has called on residents to help set the tone for the place they live in as it invites responses to one of its key planning documents. The document sets out where new development might go, how the environment is protected and what design standards are right for this area, and, once adopted, will contain planning policies which will guide all future development and decision making on all planning applications across the whole of the Borough. Options put forward in the document propose the allocation of land for housing, employment, retail and leisure and community facilities. The document also looks at design, affordable housing, protection of the open countryside and protection of environmental assets. The consultation on the Site Specific Proposals Local Development Document (LDD) opened on March 12 and people across the borough are invited to comment on or before April 23.

The Borough Council have already held successful events on the Horsemarket in Kettering where 138 people came along to talk to officers and councillors about the proposals, and in Burton Latimer, Rothwell and Desborough. In addition, documents can be viewed on the Kettering Borough Council website. All members of the public, stakeholders and interested parties are invited to speak to officers and make written comments with regards to any of the widespread and varied options which are contained within the document. Cath Bicknell, Kettering Borough Council’s Head of Development Services said: “This is a great opportunity to help shape the Borough’s future. Please take a few minutes to look at the options on our website and send your comments to the Council.” Councillor Russell Roberts, Leader of Kettering Borough Council said: “This is our way of working with the community to ensure that we all have a clear understanding of where, if any, future developments will take place. This is very important and this document will help to shape the future of Kettering Borough. It is our chance to influence where the jobs, houses and open spaces might be.” The consultation closes at 5.30pm on April 23, 2012. Visit the council website at www.kettering.gov.uk

Pottery in the Shires, takes place at Burton Latimer Civic Centre on Friday, May 4 and Saturday, May 5, offering visitors the chance to choose hand-made and individually designed products as an alternative to cheap imports. NEW OPPORTUNITIES: Corby Kilns promotes local craftspeople and artists Bob Aves and Julie Houghton, the owners of Corby Kilns, said: “At Corby Kilns, we are supporting Craft and Design Month in May as we recognise the importance of being able to choose handmade or individually designed and created products. In our shop we sell products made by our customers – all unique products, hand-made ceramics and glass items. “Pottery in the Shires will be all about pottery and ceramics, from beautiful bowls and functional ware, to decorative and simply delightful pieces and we are pleased to provide an opportunity for designers and makers to shine in the spotlight.” Pottery in the Shires will open with a preview at 7pm on Friday, May 4, where refreshments will be provided, opening at 9 am on Saturday, until 4 pm. Opening times more accessible > Town Centre KETTERING Library will be joining libraries throughout the county in opening their doors on Sundays, starting on April 22. The changes were implemented on April 16, so now the library will open on Sunday afternoons from 1pm to 4pm. During the week, the library will continue to open at 9am but will cut short its weekday opening by one hour, closing at 6pm instead of 7pm. Saturday hours will remain 9am to 5pm. The changes follow a consultation period in which users were asked

about library services. It is thought that the Sunday opening will make the libraries more accessible to those who can’t visit during the week. Included in the extended opening times will be improved access to the council’s self-service and online services and the opportunity to make Blue Badge and bus pass applications.

As part of National Science and Engineering Week, and following a programme of science-themed activities that involved pupils from the primary phase linking with the secondary school, the younger pupils held the Science Showcase to present their work to parents, gov-

ernors, senior leaders within the Brooke Weston Partnership and Kettering MP Philip Hollobone. It was the culmination of a project involving all primary children and which focused on the National Science Week theme of World in Motion, and included High Fliers - a paper aeroplane competition in which pupils had to design a paper aeroplane and write an explanation of how they tested it, how it worked and any changes to the design they made. There was also a visit from the Hands-on-Science agency, which helped pupils to explore the science behind rocket engineering. In addition, parents where invited in to science lessons to get involved with their children’s learning. Year 2 and Year 4 have kick-started links with the Secondary Phase, which has seen pupils go over and work in the labs to create blood (Year 2) and carry out an investigation of micro-organisms and yeast (Year 4). Kate Edwards, science co-ordinator for KSA’s primary phase, said: “Science has an impact on everything we do and it’s about building an understanding among our children that the study of science doesn’t happen just

New track offers riders thrills and excitement BMX track built to provide good fun with safety in mind >Rockingham Road

In Short When children want to play, they’ll find a way. Now Rockingham Road Pleasure Park has taken the informal cycle track and turned it into a safe but exciting place for BMX riders to play. A NEW BMX cycle track has been completed at the Rockingham Road Pleasure Park to replace an existing informal track that local children had created. The need for a new track was highlighted as a key development project in the master plan that won the park coveted Green Flag status. The park’s development plan also includes the installation of an outdoor gym which will include up to seven pieces of specialist fitness equipment. Local residents have been asked for their views on both schemes and the Friends of Rockingham Road Pleasure Park are seeking to secure the funding for the scheme. Valerie Hitchman, Head of Community Services at Kettering Borough Council, said: “We are delighted to be able develop the new track to replace the informal one that was there, as it raised safety concerns. The new track complies with ROSPA safety requirements.” Cllr Steve Bellamy Portfolio holder for Community at Kettering Council added: “The bid to create the outdoor gym is being led by the local Friends of Rockingham Road Pleasure Park. Big Dance 2012 is the world’s biggest, most influential celebration of dance, aiming to involve five million people nationwide. As part of Big Dance 2012, the Schools Pledge is all about inspiring local schools and groups through dance by providing an opportunity to be part of a world record attempt. > Desborough A NEW play area in Desborough, based on a Flintstones theme, has received a new addition in the form of specially carved dinosaur. The carving was undertaken by chainsaw artist Peter Leadbeater, a local, professional chainsaw artist who makes large scale sculptures hewn from single pieces of English green oak. He has made the new piece to fit in with the existing play area, adding to the prehistoric theme under which inmates from Woodhill Prison in Milton Keynes also made a large outdoor play mosaic based on snakes and ladders. The site, which is located at the junction of Dunkirk Avenue and Rushton Road, was installed by Kettering Borough Council after they received a £49,000 grant from the Department of Children, School and Families, and after consultation with Desborough Town Council. Children from Havelock Junior

School took part in the development of how the play area would look and have given their views of the outline proposals. They have also supported Desborough Town councillors in choosing the winning design. Nina Lloyd, eight, said: “The playground that was there before wasn’t any good but the new one is so much fun. I can’t wait to see the new dinosaur.” Councillor Steve Bellamy, portfolio holder for the Community said: “This is the third Playbuilder site we have developed in the borough in the past two years, which has brought in an extra £150,000 for children’s play. It’s a fact of life that neither local or national government will be willing to fund this sort of tremendous facility in the future which makes it even more fitting to win this money for play in the borough. This is a new type of play area that fits well into this semi rural location the local kids will find it really exciting.”

Town’s double celebration > Sheep Street NEXT year sees the double centenary of Sir Alfred East, and of the Art Gallery that was named in his honour, and the Friends of the Art Gallery and Museum are already preparing for a double celebration. The Alfred East Art Gallery was designed by John Alfred Gotch and was opened in July 1913, just a few weeks before Sir Alfred East died at his London home. Upon his death, Sir Alfred’s body was returned to Kettering and he lay in state in the Gallery, surround-

ing by pictures he had presented to the town, and crowds of several thousands visited to pay their last respects. Later this month, the Friends of Kettering Art Gallery and Museum will be holding a public forum to discuss the double centenary and the future development of the town’s cultural and heritage quarter. Chaired by Philip Hollobone MP, the meeting will take place at the gallery on Sheep Street, Kettering, at 8pm on April 26 and members of the public are invited to share their views and ideas.

Apprentice numbers continue to grow

Volunteers book places to help out library Work gets started on replacing Kettering library flooring > Sheep Street VOLUNTEERS from across Kettering have offered to lend some weight - literally - to the refurbishment of the town’s main library. As reported in Kettering Extra earlier this month, a £1million appeal has been launched by the Friends of Kettering Library to carry out vital repairs to restore the building, opened in 1904, to its former glory. Northamptonshire County Council has got the campaign off to a welcome start by providing £250,000 for the restoration of the floor - an original parquet surface that has deteriorated significantly over the years and which is to be completely replaced. It is hoped that the floor can be replaced with the minimum disruption to library services, and so it will be taken up and re-laid in sections, in three stages. At each stage, a team of volunteers have offered to come in and move desks, shelves and books around, so that one area at a time can be cleared.

Tresham College is reporting 200 per cent growth in the number of apprentice places offered over the past 18 months. The college has worked hard to develop excellent partnerships with more than 350 employers to provide opportunities for existing and future workforces and in the past year, has supported more than 730 apprentices. Organised on behalf of the Moldova Charity Mission, the concert featured percussion guitarist Jonny Martin, Peter Bultitude as Phil Collins, and the band The Rogues, all the artists giving their time for nothing. The concert raised £1,267 and a further £1000 has been donated since then, with the organisers hoping to eventually raise between £10,000 and £12,000 to buy a mini-bus for the charity’s day centre in the town of Straseni. One Kettering man has devoted 30 years of his life to supporting hospital radio- an achievement has been equalled on only two previous occasions in the station’s 41-year history – by Harry Johnson, who has served for 36 years, and Fred Radford, who has served for 32 David Skelham, 57, was presented with a long-service certificate by Kettering General Hospital Chief Executive Lorene Read. Mr Skelham, who works as a healthcare assistant at St Mary’s Hospital in Kettering, said: “It is a very interesting job and you are making a real difference to patients who may be feeling somewhat lonely, depressed or under stress. “I find that people really value having a chat with you and a chance to hear their favourite record when they are feeling a bit low. “It’s also lots of fun being a hospital radio presenter and you get the chance to play a very wide variety of music for people.” Mr Skelham, who is married to Sarah, has worked as a presenter and as ward visitor collecting requests for patients. He is currently a presenter every Tuesday evening between 8.30pm and 10pm.

Students from the Foundation Degree in Fine Art will take up space in the unoccupied buildings in Kettering’s Market Place from April 28 to May 4 between 10am and 4pm. THE Battle of Naseby - a pivotal clash of the English Civil War and one of the most significant battles in English history - has arrived at Kettering’s Manor House Museum. The 1645 battle is being revisited in an exhibition of battlefield archaeology and historic artefacts which looks at the differing armies involved in the battle and how the battle was fought. The Battle of Naseby saw Parliament’s New Model Army defeat the Royalist forces of King Charles I so overwhelmingly that the King’s attempt to wage war was effectively over. Items on display, on loan from Market Harborough Museum, include four swords, a cannon ball, coins and two sentimental love tokens. Many of these objects have been drawn from the collection of the Naseby Battlefield Project, which has been investigating the site since 2001. The exhibition is now open and runs until Saturday, May 26. The Museum is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10am - 4.45pm, admission is free.

Just a couple of things about the ﬁrst issue which I think are perhaps worthy of your consideration:Why, in the 'Locals are the face of Extra' item, do you refer to all four of these 'locals' by their status, namecheck and interview three of them, show photographs of two of them and make no further reference to the luckless 'family butcher'? In his position, I'd be a bit fed up! Also, this is a fortnightly publication and although the ﬁrst issue is dated 4 April I didn't see it on sale until yesterday, when I discovered that both competitions had a closing date of 11 April - not a very satisfactory situation in that even at the modest price of 50p the opportunity to enter these should be available to all your readers, not just the early birds. Every car park I go to there are an abundance of Disabled spaces, quite right too, but it’s a search for the parent and baby spaces. It can be hard work getting a little one in and out of a car and you need the car doors wide open to secure your child properly. I fear scratching a neighbouring car in the smaller spaces. I haven’t found any in the Cornmarket car park, the car park behind the post oﬃce and Marks and Spencer’s or the School lane car park-why is this? Do the council want us to take our trade elsewhere? EXPERTS tell us that we should keep the romance in our relationship by having Date Nights, time spent focussing on the two of you. Is this the stuff of dreams or reality? First the logistics of a sitter, why is this always the woman’s job? The actual evening doesn’t start well when you are stressed by having to change twice. Baby sick and leaking milk - Chanel it ain’t! Add to this the depression you feel as you can’t get into the outfit you wanted to wear, realise it’s the first time you have looked properly into a mirror for ages (where did those wrinkles come from!), and can you afford to eat out once you have shelled out for a babysitter? Remember when

getting ready for a date used to take hours, if not days, of preparation and discussing what to wear, what to talk about and what was going to happen? The post mortem afterwards with friends, happy days. Finally you make it out the door, stressed, and spend journey discussing if sitter is going to be OK? All goes well at ﬁrst (although doesn’t the OH look tired) and you start to relax a little. But this new focus of your life (and that’s no bad thing) slowly starts to creep back into the conversation and the rest of the evening passes talking about the little darling/s. Well why not! You dreamed of having them, have wasted hours gazing at them as babes, and still pass time wistfully

thinking about their future. Well its 9pm, you are both shattered and turn down dessert to rush home and check all is well. Bank balanced emptied on meal and sitter, you both crawl into bed exhausted. Romantic? not really. Exhausting and expensive, and energy and spare cash don’t tend to be in abundance in the early days of parenthood, if ever. But you tried, and my view is that the trying is important. It doesn’t have to be a meal out, even a cup of tea; just the two of you alone can be special if you try. It’s the trying which will make a diﬀerence to the daily grind, and that’s where you will ﬁnd the romance. THE STORY of St George and the legendary dragon has been told to children over centuries, but visitors to Kenilworth Castle’s patriotic celebration will be joined by a brand new largerthan-life reptile, as English Heritage unveils its new dragon! The fearsome new dragon joined a respected line of dragons that have graced English Heritage’s re-enactments over the years, each putting in a good fight against the noble knight, St George. Top car choices for sons and daughters Predicting who will buy which type of car has always been difficult for vehicle manufacturers, but nevertheless they do not make cars without knowing the target market and matching each model to specific demographic groups. There are naturally exceptions, but generally demographics play a huge part in how new models of cars are marketed. Large saloon and estate cars are usually aimed at families and are often driven by Dads. Mums tend to be less concerned with visual appeal and performance so are likely to choose MPVs or SUVs for the security that a bigger car offers. As people get older they are more inclined to drive a car that is reliable with cheaper running costs and perhaps some extra space for trips out with the grandchildren. Sons and Daughters. The young male driver is likely to go for a car which is both sporty and cool but this will depend on how much money they or their parents have available and their restrictions on what they will permit their sons to drive given safety concerns. Daughters often choose cars that are smaller and easier to drive, with phone devices and music being a priority. Naturally these are broad generalisations and stereotyping people in terms of which cars they are likely to purchase by sex or age could easily attract criticism, yet this seems to work for the car manufacturing industry. Opel/ Vauxhall engineers and designers worked together to ensure the Ampera cleaves the air as efficiently as possible. The success of their work is reflected in an exception-

By reducing the energy needed to overcome air resistance, they have added an estimated eight miles to the car’s battery driving range, and 50 miles to its total extended range. An aggressive rake on the windshield and rear screen helps reduce turbulence and drag, while airflow around the front fascia and doormounted rear-view mirrors has been optimised. In the rear, sharp edges and the carefully designed spoiler control airflow. Those vertical slots

in the bumper also create a clean point of separation for air passing around the side of the car. Malcolm Ward, Ampera chief designer and Opel/Vauxhall Director Exterior Design, said: “The vertical slots at the outer edge of the rear bumper not only emphasise the wide track and stance, but also serve an important aerodynamic function. JUST after a week after competing in the London Marathon, Kettering Harriers coach Matthew Pelszok will be walking around Kettering Athletics track for 20 hours 12 minutes to celebrate both the London Olympics and to raise money for two charities. Matthew expects to be joined on his walk by other members of Kettering Town Harriers as part of the club’s family fun day. One of the reasons Matthew is attempting the fundraising feat is to support the Ron Pickering Memorial Trust which is supporting his marathon run. The Fund is dedicated to assisting aspiring young athletes who have shown by their attitude and dedication that they possess the qualities which will ensure the growth and protection of sport. It’s a cause close to Matthew’s heart through his commitment to athletics locally and nationally. He’s also walking for Cancer Research UK which has helped both Matthew’s parents in their fight with cancer. His father has had cancer for the past six years and his mum was diagnosed in 2011. To support his fundraising efforts, Matthew is inviting Kettering people to donate raffle prizes, as he’s running a raffle where everyone who sponsors him a minimum of £5 gets entered into the hat to win one of many great prizes donated by local companies. Kettering Town Harriers will be putting on entertainment on the day, which is open to all members of the public. CLUBS looking to train volunteers could be entitled to grants from Northamptonshire Sport, which is now offering scholarships to Clubmark clubs. The initiative is to help with the cost of training volunteers and covers courses in areas such as safeguarding and protecting children, first aid, grounds staff courses, refereeing/umpiring courses (but not sports coaching courses which are supported through coaching scholarships). Clubs can apply for up to £50 per course and up to £250 per club per year. Hosepipe ban advice for sports clubs Document to help keep pitches and courts green > County CLUBS struggling to keep pitches in good condition during the hosepipe ban have been offered vital advice from Northamptonshire Sport in conjunction with Sport England. It is thought that around four out of every 10 outdoor sports pitches in England will be affected by the restrictions. With water crucial to maintaining the quality and safe performance of many outdoor surfaces, governing bodies of sports have come together with Sport England to put together a document that offers advice on how to maintain pitches and courts effectively during drought conditions; making the best use of rainfall when it does occur; managing the use of pitches to reduce the risk of damage; using water more effectively and working with the water companies to negotiate possible exemptions. The document will not only support sports clubs directly affected by the hosepipe ban, but will also encourage clubs outside the ban area to use the limited water more effectively and to make their facilities more resilient, which will help ensure their longevity. Current legislation only provides very limited exemptions for sports facilities, such as for staging national and

In the Sportivate Project of the Year category, the organisers are looking for providers or deliverers of exceptional Sportivate projects that have ensured that as many participants as possible have been engaged, retained and then successfully transferred into sporting roles. They are also looking for examples of either outstanding coaches or inspirational participants or those who

show young people or club development success stories or who have worked with either hard to reach or older participants from Sportivate target participants.
