CRACK DOWN ON FLY TIPPING Barton Seagrave man fined £990 for dumping waste East Northamptonshire Council is still cracking down on fly tippers, taking two environmental criminals to court this month, resulting in fines of hundreds of pounds. Zack Neyland from Barton Seagrave was fined £990 after pleading guilty of dumping waste on the Skew Bridge access road in May this year. Northampton Magistrates Court ordered him to pay a fine of £300, legal costs of £480, £180 in court costs and a victim surcharge of £30. In May details of Emma Cockburns from Stanwick were found in a fly tip near Stanwick. She was invited to explain how the material got there, but did not take the opportunity to return any information. She was ordered to pay a £200 fine, £150 to contribute to ENC’s costs, a court charge of £150 and £20 surcharge, by Northampton Magistrates Court. Leader of East Northamptonshire Council, Steven North, said: “There is no excuse for fly

tipping and we take any offence very seriously. We spend at least £20,000 every year on clearing the big fly tips alone, so we’re really pleased with these successful prosecutions. “Although officers use surveillance cameras to catch fly tippers, we also rely on local people telling us when they see a person or business illegally dumping waste. Two boys arrested after major fire at block of flats

LOCAL GUY Fawkes is on the pyre again; four hundred and ten years after his plot was foiled, we still ‘Remember, remember the fifth of November, gunpowder, treason and plot. We see no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot . . .’ The fact is most people don’t recall that second line and don’t actually realise the relevance of Fawkes and his 13 accomplices – among them Francis Tresham, of Rushton Hall. It’s just Bonfire Night – a chance to have a bit of a party, light up the dark sky and make a big noise. It goes on all week and beyond – fireworks banging and cracking for days, frightening our animals almost to death and burning money, literally. And although I sound like I am tut-tutting, I will probably be craning my neck to see other people’s fireworks going up and saying things like: “That was a good one.” Or, “that was a bit rubbish” – as you do. Historians believe that Tresham may well have been the reason the Catholic plotters were discovered – that he was the author of a letter which reached King James 1 and hinted at the plan to raze the Houses of Parliament – an act of terrorism. Tresham was taken to the Tower of London, where he died the following month, probably of a urinary infection. Would his warning letter that actually changed the course of history have saved him from the grisly justice meted out to the other plotters if he had lived long enough to stand trial? Probably not.

FIRE crews from Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to a fire at a property in Dryland Street, Kettering, on Monday October 26, at about 9.20pm. Two days later, two boys – aged 11 and 14, both from Kettering – were arrested on suspicion of arson. They were later released on police bail pending further enquiries. Initial reports said the fire was in the basement car park – three fire appliances from Kettering and Burton Latimer fire stations were deployed. Group manager Terry Smith said: “The crews were met with a substantial fire, where smoke and flame was spreading to opposite sides of the building. “The crews worked hard to bring the fire under control in the basement car park under challenging conditions. “Further crews used ladders to get onto the roof, where a number of residents had gathered. Other fire crews entered the building wearing breathing apparatus to ensure residents’ safety and lead them down the protected stairwell, which was cleared from smoke using pressure fans.

“No-one was injured in the fire. However, two residents were taken to hospital for a precautionary check-up. The fire was brought under control by 10.30pm.” Seven fire engines and two specialist appliances attended during the incident, with a total of 40 firefighters on scene at the peak of the incident, alongside several police officers and ambulance crews. Support was also provided by a number of people including the borough council and local businesses. Mr Smith added: “The incident remained live during the night, with one crew attending during timed intervals to check on the building for fire hot spots and flame flare up.” Police and fire officers investigating suspected it had been started deliberately. MEMBERS of Chicheley Lodge in Thrapston have supported the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) at Kettering General Hospital with a donation of £850. The local branch of the Freemasons raised the money via a Christmas lunch. The money was presented to the hospital on Friday October 9 and received by staff from the unit. Lodge Master Mick Warren picked the SCBU as his charity for the year. He said: “We support both

local and national charities and change them each year. “We think the SCBU does an excellent job supporting the families who have sick or premature babies and this was our way of supporting them.” SCBU Lead Nurse Janet Ford said: “This donation is very much appreciated by the unit. It will help us to continue to provide the services we give to local families whose babies require some extra support during the first few weeks of their lives.”

Man seriously hurt in fight LOCAL police are appealing for information after a man was seriously injured in an assault in The Nook, Corby, earlier this month. Officers were called shortly before 1am on Tuesday October 20, following reports of a fight and an injured man in the street. The victim, 29-year-old local man, Lee Godfrey, suffered serious head injuries and – at the time of Extra Local going to press – is in a critical condition in hospital. Detectives investigating the alleged assault are appealing for information and are particularly keen to trace Lee’s movements during Monday evening and the hours leading up to the assault. Corby awards their sporting heroes

LOCAL sporting stars took centre stage last month at Corby Borough Council’s annual Sports Awards. After an opening performance from UK & European BMX Freestyle Champion, Keelan Phillips – who treated the audience to some amazing tricks – the night got off to a great start and nominees, their families, friends, local dignitaries and sponsors all settled down at the Best Western Rockingham Forest Hotel to see who the class of ’15 would turn out to be. The audience was also shown a short video celebrating the life of Thomas McNamee, a tenyear-old Corby boy who sadly passed away last year. Thomas was big on football and played for S ‘n’ L Football Club, which was given a Special Recognition Award, presented by Thomas’ mum, Natasha McNamee. The award was a thank-you from Corby Borough Council and Thomas’s family for all the support they have shown in the past year, organising football games and raising money for the British Heart Foundation, in Thomas’s memory. Deputy leader of Corby Borough Council, Cllr Jean Addison, said: “The annual Sports Awards in Corby were once again fantastic – every year, the level of nominations is outstanding, but they just seem to get stronger, with 2015 evidently being no exception. “We congratulate not only the winners of the 2015 awards, but also everyone who was nominated and shortlisted – each and every one of them is an outstanding example within sports in Corby.” Lead member for community, Cllr John McGhee, added: “Well done to every single one of our nominees; your contribution to sport is the reason we are here this evening and it’s been an absolute pleasure to be able to recognise and celebrate all of your great achievements. “I’d like to thank everyone involved for making this event happen – without sponsors, nominees and those involved in its organisation, it couldn’t go ahead.” The 2015 Corby Sports Awards were sponsored by Rockingham Forest Best Western Hotel, Alliance Leisure, RBW Spur, Roquette, Tollers Solicitors, Corby & District Lions Club, Amaray, Northamptonshire Sport, Northamptonshire County Council and Corby Sports Forum. Over the past year, Chris has worked tirelessly in promoting Corby Town Table Tennis Club, helping the club to gain its Clubmark accreditation, recognised by England Table Tennis. Chris has sent out flyers to most Corby schools promoting the club along with obtaining sponsorship from Barratt Homes for £1,000 for next season. Chris has also just qualified as a level 1 UKCC Table Tennis Coach and always helps to create a good atmosphere within the club and a good community spirit in the Kingswood area. Get Active 2015: Louise Woolacott – Jogging. Louise joined the ‘Body Magic Marvels’ Jog Northants group in January 2014. At first, finding it very tough to even jog for more than two minutes, she almost gave up, but deciding to stick with it, she lost three-and-a-half stone. In April 2015, shortly after her 60th birthday and just over a month since her husband sadly passed away, Louise ran the London Marathon for the first time, raising £2,500 for charity. Louise is a great role model for other beginners joining the jogging group. Young Leader of the Year 2015: Hannah Loy – Volleyball. At only 17 years old, Hannah has been a valuable asset to her school in terms of volunteering, but has also been involved with Volleyball England and the leadership academy with Northamptonshire Sport. Hannah has attended many workshops and training courses, which have helped her develop as a volunteer. A highlight for Hannah was being selected to help out at European and International events, most recently being a back-up line judge for the European Championship U20s Men’s Volleyball competition held earlier this year. Hannah’s example has led to many other leaders from her school now supporting Volleyball England at festivals held at Kettering Arena on a voluntary basis, giving up their own weekends to support this sport.

Community Club of the Year 2015: Corby Junior Fishing Club – Despite only being established in early 2015, the club is already having a great impact on the number of young people getting involved in angling. Following a successful launch event in May, the club planned and delivered a summer holiday coaching programme engaging 56 young people. The club is building a really strong community of young anglers who are keen to learn new skills, enter competitions and enjoy a sporting facility which is on their doorstep. A new community club is now in place to offer opportunities that didn’t exist within Corby prior to the club being established. Coach of the Year 2015: Philip Wilson – Boxing. Phil is at the gym most days of the week, in the early mornings before heading to work and, in the evenings, after work. He opens the doors to the gym, helps run the club, organises inter-club sparring and is key to bringing in a lot of sponsorship, which is essential to keep the club open. Phil has a great rapport with the children he coaches, not only at the gym, but also checking in with them during the week when they have competitions. Phil is willing to help anyone with training who asks and is always looking for ways to use his expertise to improve others’ ability. Phil continues to support local events outside boxing, including the Corby 5K earlier this year which he ran just weeks after completing the Paris Marathon. Long Time Contribution to Sport: Cameron Semple – Gymnastics. Cameron has inspired children in a gymnastics environment for more than 25 years. As head coach of Corby Gymnastics Academy, he has developed the club in various ways, giving a significantly larger amount of young people the opportunity to participate in sport. Cameron’s rapport with young people motivates them to develop both their physical and holistic skills. His long term commitment and persistent drive to support the cause of sport for children is inspirational. Disabled Sports Achiever 2015: Dermot Bailey – Dermot has had a terrific year looking to enhance his chances of getting to Rio 2016 for the Olympic Games. Dermot has gained a world ranking high of 58 in singles and 53 in doubles. During 2015 he has won three

Futures events, beating players ranked as high as 28 in the world. Dermot has made excellent strides this year, despite limited playing time of just twice a week with his coach, Mark Taylor. He utilises the indoor and outdoor courts at Corby Tennis Centre for twice-weekly sessions and also plays at the centre with other Corby players. Young Sportsperson of the Year 2015: Isaac Akers – This was an amazing season for the talented Corby AC athlete, which saw Isaac win every track race in his age group apart from one. Isaac has already achieved the 3000m qualifying time for the inaugural European Youth Athletics Championships to be held next July in Tbillsi, Georgia. This would be the first opportunity to be selected to represent Great Britain. Getting to this level takes total dedication and focus during gruelling training sessions, combined with the correct amount of rest and recovery. Isaac has done everything asked of him and has been prepared to go the extra mile to achieve success during this incredible season. Team of the Year 2015: Corby Town Football Club – The club had a fantastic 201415 season which culminated in them being crowned Southern Premier League Champions on the last day of the season in April. Corby Town Football Club helped bring the whole community together, with more than a thousand supporters travelling to Poole for the title winning game. The club has raised the profile of the town, with more people from Corby going to watch them each week; they are a credit to the town. Local Sportsperson of the Year 2015: Lucy Hatton – Lucy had a major breakthrough this year for a young talented athlete who has been a member at Corby Athletics Club for quite a few years. Despite injury taking over parts of the season, to win a medal of any sort in a Senior International Championship is a wonderful achievement. In February, Lucy took Silver in the British Indoor Athletics Championships over the 60m hurdles. Following this, Lucy was selected to represent Great Britain in the European Indoor Athletics Championships in Prague. Lucy ran the race of her life indoors to take a well deserved Silver medal in a lifetime best of 7.90 seconds.

Pedestrian named

THE female pedestrian who died in a road traffic collision in Oakley Road, Corby, on the evening of Saturday October 17 has been named as Lauren Partridge (29) of Corby. The collision took place at about 7.30pm near to the junction with Lyveden Way when she was crossing the road with a 28-year-old man. The couple were initially involved in a collision with a red Daewoo Matiz before being involved in another collision with a silver Mercedes-Benz. Lauren was taken to Kettering General Hospital where she later died. The man sustained serious injuries and was taken to University Hospital Coventry. He has since been released from hospital. Car vandalised

VANDALS let down the tyres of a car parked in a Corby street then broke into it. The car was parked in Gainsborough Road, close to the junction with Blake Road, between 10pm on Friday October 16 and 5.45am the following day. The damaged both the ignition and windscreen wiper stick.

Motorhome is stolen

THIEVES are thought to have used a flatbed lorry to steal a motorhome from a yard in Pytchley Lodge Industrial Estate in Kettering last month. The Ford motorhome, registration FJ56 XYH (pictured) was parked in a locked compound in Pytchley Lodge Road. The theft happened sometime between 1.30am and 2.15am on Tuesday September 29 and police are hoping locals will cone forward with any information. Two men were seen in the area, both wearing hooded tops with the hood up. Witnesses can call Northamptonshire Police on: 101. Work starts on specialist housing

A GROUND-breaking ceremony took place this week, as Extra Local went to press, to celebrate the construction of a purpose-built supported living development for adults with physical and learning disabilities in Rushden. The project’s landlord – Inclusion, which will provide specialist housing services – together with supported living services provider Lifeways, are working with developer HB Villages on the high quality construction. Burglary foiled

BURGLARS tried to break into a house in Barton Seagrave but fled empty handed. The house in Chedington Close was targeted at about 5.30am on Monday October 26. The offenders did not manage to get into the building and two men were seen running away from the property.

Taxi cash raided

MONEY and a sat nav were stolen from a taxiparked in a Corby street. The car was broken into sometime between 5pm on Friday October 23 and 8.30am the following morning while it was parked in Bede Close. One of the vehicle’s windows was smashed and a cash box taken.

Facebook shares commemoration A WREATH placed by local school children at a Belgian cemetery, to commemorate soldiers who died in the First World War, has been spotted by other visitors and shared on social media. The wreath was donated by the Mayor of Wellingborough, Cllr Barry Graves, and taken by Sir Christopher Hatton Academy year 10 history students Francesca Patmore and Kathryn Knight to the Tyne Cot cemetery, where a number of Wellingborough soldiers have their names engraved. The message on the wreath reads: ‘On behalf of the mayor, councillors and people of the borough of Wellingborough’ and was taken by the two students as part of the national Centenary Battlefield Tour programme. The programme was established to help students gain an insight into life during the First World War and increase awareness of the sacrifice made by millions of soldiers.

Posting about the find on Facebook, Lindsey Whitehead explained that her parents had seen the wreath at the cemetery in Belgium. The mayor picked up the post and the story was shared more widely. One of the students, Kathryn Knight, joined the discussion and said: “Well spotted! I was one of the two pupils from Hatton who were chosen to visit and place the wreath. It was a great honour and I am really pleased it has been recognised. It was an amazing experience and I learnt loads.” Cllr Graves, said: “I was very proud to be able to donate a wreath to commemorate the brave sacrifice of so many local soldiers. “I’m delighted that this gesture on behalf of the whole borough has been seen by other visitors to this cemetery and shared even further through social media.” The mayor also donated another wreath, which was taken by the students to Lijssenthoek Cemetery, where six local soldiers are buried.

Sexual assault

POLICE are appealing for witnesses following a sexual assault that happened on Friday September 18, between 7.15am and 7.25am. Two teenagers were standing at the bus stop on Harrowden Road, adjacent to Roche Way, when a silver 4x4 car pulled up in front of them. The front passenger window was rolled down, and the man sitting in the front passenger seat spoke to the girls before forcibly kissing one on the lips. The offender is described as Asian with short black spiked hair, of slim build, approximately 30 years old and wearing a black jacket and white top. The driver of the vehicle is also described as Asian, similar age and hair, of fat build, with piercings in both ears and wearing a white top. There were three passengers in the back of the car. VARIOUS electrical items including an X box, a Kindle and a lap-top were stolen when offender/s broke into a house in Beanfield Avenue, Corby, on Saturday October 17 between 9.30pm and 11.45pm.

Burglars took laptop

A BURGLARY took place in Albany Gardens, Corby, on the evening of Wednesday October 7. Offenders gained access to the house via a ground floor window between 6pm and 9.30pm and searched all the bedrooms. They made off with a five-year-old Dell laptop computer and a small amount of cash.

Car centre destroyed

A FIRE on an industrial estate in Corby last month may have been started deliberately. At 5am on Wednesday October 21, the Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to the blaze at the Corby Car Centre in Brunel Road, Corby. The company specialises in repairs to cars and small vans and the fire led destroyed their premises. Neighbouring units also suffered smoke and water damage as well as possible structural damage. Officers investigating the fire believe it may have been a deliberate act of arson.

Be vigilant, shoppers told

A SPATE of distraction thefts i n supermarket car parks – in which victims are asked for directions – has sparked a warning from police. Officers say the majority of the thefts have happened in supermarket car parks across the county, including Kettering, Wellingborough and Corby. In the past five months, 32 incidents have been reported. In all of them the victim – often a woman on her own – has been approached by someone who has asked for directions. The victim is usually approached while loading her shopping into her car, or is about to drive off. On some occasions, the offender has produced a map which they encourage the victim to look at – meanwhile a second person has removed items from their bag or purse, from the boot or passenger seat of the car. In most cases, it appears the victim has been spotted by offenders in the store or at the cashpoint, who has then seen them enter their PIN. Detective Sergeant Johnny Campbell says the trend is concerning and is urging shoppers to be alert to any suspicious behaviour: “These thieves are using distraction techniques where some form of help is requested, in a bid to grab your attention and obtain a small time advantage while you are focused on helping them. They generally work in pairs and, while one is distracting you, the other attempts to steal your belongings without being spotted. “Requests for help and directions are genuine in the majority of cases but, unfortunately, we’ve seen a rise in the number of these distraction type thefts over recent months, not just in Northamptonshire but in neighbouring counties as well. “What is particularly concerning is that the offenders appear to have identified their victim in the store or at the cash point, have watched them enter their PIN and then followed them to their vehicle. The offenders then attempt to steal the bank card using this distraction technique and, if successful, use the card to withdraw money or make fraudulent purchases. “In many of the incidents, the victim has not realised they have been a victim of crime until they have got home or the offenders have attempted to use the stolen cards. Shield your PIN when you use your cards and be aware of people around you.”

A GRANT awarded to a local veterinary surgery has helped save a terrier puppy’s life. State-of-the-art blood analysis equipment was part-funded by a business support grant from Velocity Growth Hub. And that equipment came to the rescue of Lily – a dog with a potentially life-threatening form of anaemia. The terrier was suffering from Canine Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia. But thanks to the blood analysis machine part-funded by a Velocity grant, the team at Corby Veterinary Practice in Harrogate Court quickly diagnosed the potentially fatal condition and were able to save her life.

The equipment formed part of a major investment into pioneering technology by the practice when it expanded into new premises earlier this year. Other purchases made as part of an £8,000 grant from Velocity included an X-ray machine, a moveable examination table and a dental machine. Vet Nick Park said: “The Velocity funding has been a huge help. This technology ensures we can give the best possible service. The blood analysis machine in particular has been fantastic. Without it, we would have to transport patients to other sites. “Having it here saves us valuable time.”

Awards for local students PUPILS from two local schools were rewarded for putting practical skills into action last month. They took part in a simulated rescue from a smokefilled building. The students – aged 12 and 13 – from The Latimer Arts College and Bishop Stopford School, used the exercise to showcase their expertise as part of a passing out parade, marking the end of their participation in the Youth Engagement Scheme at Burton Latimer Fire Station. The scheme is run by Northamptonshire Police and the county’s fire and rescue service. The achievements of all the youngsters were recognised at the event, but one award, for being the most improved student, went to Louis Howell. As part of the six-week-long Youth Engagement Scheme, the youngsters learn about a variety of subjects ranging from lifesaving skills in the HeartStart programme, to drugs awareness and information on arson and detection.

One of the students, Aayra Khawaja, also received a special certificate for using her skills in an emergency situation. She was able to use the lifesaving skills she gained from her school, and the HeartStart training she received as part of YES, to save a younger member of her family from choking on a sweet. Watch manager Chris Stephenson said: “She stayed remarkably calm and reverted back to the training she received. She gave back slaps to try to remove the sweet from the youngster’s throat. Once she gave these back slaps she still remained calm and raised the alarm to a member of her family who assisted her.” Other students who took part in the programme included Joshua Taylor, Daniel Fisk, Josh Warwick, Bethany Jones, Lorcan Harbour and Emya Smart. The activities were designed to put some of the students’ new skills to the test. Events included a simulated house fire in which four of the youngsters entered a building filled with cosmetic

A CHARITY is looking to team up with schools, local communities, parish councils and clubs across Northamptonshire to raise funds to place life-saving defibrillators in them. AEDdonate says that in the UK just 8.6 per cent of people who suffer a cardiac arrest away from hospitals are saved – because there are not enough defibrillators (AEDs). That figure compares to 21 per cent in Holland and 25 per cent in Norway, countries that are way ahead of the UK when it comes to access to the equipment. As cardiac arrest is the UK’s biggest killer AEDdonate is on a mission to increase the survival rate. The charity arranges raffle prizes, local vouchers from local businesses which will generate income for the campaign and online personal challenges that locals can take part in if they wish. AEDEdonate is also looking for support from local organisations, councillors and MPs. House fire: man dies

A MAN aged 46 died in a major house fire in Corby on Saturday October 17 and another man and a woman – both aged 24 – escaped the blaze via an upstairs window. The cause of the fire has been confirmed as a chip pan on the kitchen stove. Emergency services were called at 7.55pm to an address in Brixham Walk. At the height of the incident there were five pumps and a total of 30 firefighters tackling the blaze. Firefighters sadly discovered the victim of the blaze in the living room. He was confirmed dead at the scene. Smoke alarms were found in a bag inside the property, with no batteries in them. Northamptonshire Police Detective Chief Inspector Phil Mills said: “Our thoughts are with the family and the local community at this tragic time.”

OFFICERS investigating the theft of a dog from outside a Northamptonshire shop have released this CCTV image of the incident happening. The female English springer spaniel, pictured, was taken from outside the Tesco Express store in Bridge Street, Rothwell, at about 7.20pm on Saturday October 10. The dog had been tied to a tree while its owners went into the shop. At that point, somebody untied the dog and walked off with it in the direction of Market Hill. Slovakian puppy is quarantined

A FOUR-month-old puppy from Slovakia has been taken into quarantine by Northamptonshire County Council’s trading standards service after it was illegally imported into the UK without being vaccinated against rabies. The puppy had been microchipped, showing the Slovakia country code on its chip number. It also had paperwork that detailed routine vaccinations and worming, but did not include a rabies vaccination. For dogs, cats and other mammals to enter the UK, it is necessary for them to have either spent four months in approved quarantine kennels or to have complied with the requirements of the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS). Councillor Andre Gonzalez de Savage, county council cabinet member for Strategic

infrastructure and public protection said: “It appears that the puppy arrived in this country illegally, breaching regulations that are in place to safeguard against rabies and other diseases and I am pleased that trading standards were able to act so quickly to take the dog into quarantine. IN the mid-1930s, the first British opinion poll was taking place, Sellotape went on sale for the first time, Tolkien published ‘The Hobbit’ and Corby was celebrating the opening of its first hotel: The Corby Hotel, built in 1936. Raven Hall was built two years later and The Corby Hotel’s name was soon changed to The Raven Hotel. It was built to accommodate management and senior staff visiting the construction and growth of the Steel Works and, although not as old as the buildings in Corby Old Village, it is among the oldest buildings in ‘New Corby’. In 1936, it was known as ‘Northamptonshire’s most luxurious hotel’ and boasted a putting green, bowls green and rose garden. The Raven Hall has always been a ballroom and three years ago it was refurbished to its original spec. The bar was called ‘The Gamebird’ and ‘Rosie’s Pumphouse’ during the late 80s

and early 90s and the hall was called ‘Mr Q’s Snooker Hall’. But, for the majority of its lifespan, it has been known as ‘The Raven Hotel’ and ‘The Raven Hall’. Corby Coat of Arms A raven features quite a bit in the town: Corby’s Coat of Arms Crest rests on a wreath of red and gold colours and above the helm is a raven or corbie, symbolic of the name Corby. The gold collar and chain distinguish it from other raven crests. The wings of the raven are extended and in one claw it holds a gad or block of steel, indicating the major industry that was once the mainstay of the town. The motto ‘Deeds Not Words’ indicates Corby’s attitude to social responsibility. Often mistaken as a rhyme about magpies, due to the TV programme, The Raven rhyme of old folklore has often been recited by children – even today – as they count prune or plum stones left at the side of their pudding plates!

Make sure Peanut always has access to a gnawing block, which you can buy at pet shops. Some gerbils have teeth which do not meet, which makes it difficult for them to gnaw and keep them worn down properly. If Peanut has this problem then she will need to have her teeth trimmed regularly throughout her life, so always keep an eye on them and take her to the vet if they become overgrown again.

Is your pet overweight?

How to give your pet a body shape check Leading veterinary charity, PDSA, is advising owners to check their pet’s body shape to ensure they aren’t at risk of being overweight. A third of dogs and a quarter of cats are overweight or obese. Overweight pets have an increased risk of serious illnesses, reduced quality of life, and shorter life expectancy. Definitely not things most people would choose for their pets. However, one of the key problems is that with so many larger than life pets around, many owners simply don’t realise that their four-legged-friend is overweight. Assessing your pet’s current shape and weight is the first step to giving your pet a healthy year ahead.

PDSA Vet, Vicki Larkham-Jones, has provided some tips on how to check your pet’s body shape. For dogs and cats, first stand back and look at your pet from the side, and then from above. You should be able to see a defined, tucked in waist (unless your pet has long hair). The next step is to feel your pet’s shape. Start by running your hands over their sides. You should be able to easily feel the ribs beneath your fingers, but they shouldn’t be prominent and the skin should move easily over them. Next run your hand along your pet’s back and over the hipbones; again you should be able to feel the bones quite easily under the skin, but without them feeling prominent. Next feel under your pet’s tummy – it should tuck in and not bulge out. Cats in particular tend to carry any additional weight in their abdomen, which can sag beneath them. For dogs, feel around the base of their tail; there should be no fatty bulge there. For rabbits, you should be able to feel, but not see, the ribs and other bones. There should be no bulges around the rump area, or around their neck. If you spot any signs that your pet may be overweight then the next step is to consult your vet, who can weigh your pet and advise on the ideal weight range for your pet’s breed and age. If your pet does need to lose a few pounds, then your vet can provide guidance on safely managing their diet and activity levels. This is particularly important for cats and rabbits, as it can be life-threatening if they lose weight too quickly. Many veterinary practices now offer free weight clinics to provide regular help and advice to owners whose pets are on a caloriecontrolled diet.

Microchipping: The best gift for your Pet Pets can go missing for a many reasons; they can become scared by fireworks, thunderstorms and even road works invoking their animal fight or flight instincts, they can be injured and not be able to get home, or simply wander too far from home and get lost. It is thought that only around 50% of dogs are microchipped, and even fewer cats, yet so many go missing every day. Collars and tags are often lovingly given to pets, however these can easily come off leaving a much loved family member lost and unidentifiable. If microchipped, Vets and local authorities can quickly identify a pet’s owner and return the pet home with least stress to the animal caused. When pets are not microchipped they usually end up in a re-homing centre or even worse, being put to sleep. National charity Dogs Trust, report that last year 111,986 stray and abandoned dogs were picked up by Local Authorities across the UK, with only 40% reunited with their owners. This percentage would be dramatically increased if more pets were microchipped and is a strong reason why in April 2016 it will become compulsory for all dogs in England to be microchipped. Why do Vets Recommend Microchipping? A Microchip provides a permanent, inexpensive form of identification – for life. Ask anyone how much they would pay to get their pet back if it was lost and I’m sure the answer would be a lot more than the cost of a microchip. Who Can be Microchipped? Microchipping is commonly done on cats, dogs and rabbits, but many other species including birds, horses, reptiles, small furies and even fish can be chipped! How Big is a Microchip? The chip itself is smaller than a grain of rice and in cats, dogs and rabbits is implanted under the loose skin of the neck, which is usually almost pain free for the pet. It is important to point out that microchips and readers can vary considerably from suppliers so

it is vital that a good quality chip with maximum readability is used and implanted correctly. When Can My Pet be Microchipped? Most Vets recommend microchipping at the time of the second injection in your pets’ primary course or any time after this. Every Wednesday Family fun at park As spring approaches, local people are reminded of the range of evening activities on offer at Corby’s West Glebe Park. Spaces for the popular SHAPE Dance and Happenin’ sessions at West Glebe Pavilion have become available – but they are limited and will fill quickly, so don’t delay. SHAPE Dance is for four to 16-year-olds and runs on Wednesday evenings, 6-8pm. As well as being taught dance moves at the fun and friendly sessions, youngsters also have the chance to perform twice a year with all the Corby SHAPE Dance groups in the summer and Christmas shows in the Core at Corby Cube theatre. Get set for annual Santa run An event which aims to raise cash for local charities is being held at Beckett’s Park, Northampton on Sunday December 13 (10.30am) – and more than 2,000 Santas will take part. Organiser Swift Run Events hopes the festive family fun – for walkers and runners – will raise some £40,000 for the six nominated local charities: Cynthia Spencer Hospice, St John Ambulance, The Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance, Rotary Club of Northampton, The British Red Cross and Northamptonshire Health Charitable Fund. Race director Chris Dolan is asking participants to reflect the year 2015 by “walking, jogging, running and raising £20.15 to equate to over £40,000 for the six charities”. Participants of any age or experience are invited to run or walk in the event. There are even a number of four-legged friends taking part, including Archie, a fun-loving King Charles-cross dog. The event is proving very popular and will consist of two laps of a 1.5km route around the picturesque Beckett’s Park. Museum volunteers showcase new exhibition hall. After nearly two years of work on a new quarry railway exhibition hall volunteers at Rocks by Rail at Cottesmore are preparing to open the new facility to visitors during a Gala Open Day to be held at the museum on Sunday 15th November 2015. The new exhibition building spans three newly re-laid sidings providing much needed covered accommodation for the exhibits which have stood in the open for several decades. The building has been provided with visitor walkways allowing visitors to examine at close quarters the collection of quarry railway exhibits, which represents the most comprehensive collection of such heritage items in the country. The new building will directly complement the mock ironstone quarry and associated railway at the museum where old mining equipment and traditional quarry working practises are re-created for the education of visitors. The new building will be opened to visitors following a ceremony starting at 2pm. The museum will however be open from 10am and demonstrations of

quarry loading will be a feature throughout the day. Mr David Atkinson, a Museum Trustee, commented: “This new facility will be of particular benefit not only for the preservation, protection and conservation of our unique collection of quarry railway rolling stock but it will greatly enhance the visitorexperience as the undercover accommodation will enable more comprehensive and accessible provision to that heritage and its interpretation. The construction of this facility owes much to the generous financial support provided by the Mick George Community Fund complimented by the support received from local quarry companies who have donated building materials to assist our efforts. The museum’s small band of committed volunteers have put in countless hours of teamwork to make sure this project achieved its objectives and we look forward to welcoming new volunteers from the local community who will also find the enhanced facilities attractive as work continues on the conservation and interpretation

Town is now ‘adapting for retail vitality’ Celebrating county’s best produce Report by Samantha Jones, associate director at commercial property agency, Prop-Search. THE UK’s town centres are changing; they are places of great complexity and variety in terms of scale, geography and catchment, function and form. And, like a lot of town centres across the country, Kettering has suffered a rise of empty shops due to a change in our retail habits, as well as the recent economic situation – but this is changing. Many town centres now operate for 18 hours, if not a full 24 hours as a result of huge change in lifestyles since the days when town centres were dedicated mainly to shopping 9am to 5pm. The last wave of new development in the town centre has ushered in a new mix of leisure, entertainment and shopping. This shows just how vital the leisure economy and more flexible hours are to the future survival and vitality of Kettering.” The challenges of managing and controlling town centres after-hours are well documented and the negative impacts are well publicised. However, Kettering town centre has recently been awarded the prestigious Purple Flag in recognition of its exemplary evening and nighttime economy. The award, similar to the Blue Flag for beaches, recognises excellence in managing a thriving, safe and vibrant evening economy in the town centre; assessing a wide range of factors including visitor attractions, things to do, levels of lighting, clarity of signage, crime levels and cleanliness standards. Kettering was awarded the Purple Flag after assessors from the Association of Town Centre Management (ATCM) visited the town centre and experienced the night-time offering. The former derelict fire station and connecting out-buildings off Market Street are in the process of being converted to attract more independent retailers into the town, as well as taking advantage of the town’s nighttime economy. Local developer Kevin Jones – who has already had success with similar developments in Rothwell – is undertaking a sympathetic restoration of a scheme that opened last month. Known

as The Yards, the area comprises a large retail and restaurant space, which can accommodate up to 50 retailers, and offers a niche venue for music and artistic events. Inspired by similar places in Camden, a section of the scheme – The Exchange – will act as a base for new start-up or fledgling businesses. It will operate a bit like a department store in that there will be multiple traders with one central pay point. The vision behind this concept is that it will enable people to hire space on a casual basis, perhaps around an existing job or even a fashion or art student wanting to sell things they have made. A new hotel could be one step closer to being built in the town centre. Kettering Borough Council had previously approved a planning application for a 45-bedroomed hotel in Queen Street, off Horsemarket. However, a new application was made earlier this year to extend that permission to add a further 21 bedrooms. The planning documents said the extension was needed to create ‘a more economically sustainable development’. A new clothing retailer – funded by the South African retail tycoon who recently bought New Look – has chosen to open its first store in Kettering, aiming to compete with Peacocks and Primark. The nascent chain, Pep & Co, has taken over the former Dreams bed shop within the Newlands Shopping Centre. It

July also saw the opening of a new store in the Newlands Shopping Centre, by the Danish jewellery company Pandora. Established in 1982, the company has, particularly in recent years, become a household name – designing, manufacturing and marketing hand-finished modern jewellery made from genuine metals at affordable prices. Today its jewellery is sold in more than 90 countries on six continents. Town centres have generally always been dynamic and adaptive, and have constantly been reshaped by periodic and competitive shocks. Kettering is no different and is already successful in offering a kaleidoscope of experiences – from daytime shopping to early evening leisure; to eating, drinking and culture later at night and finally to drinking and dancing into the early morning. However, for a sustained future it needs to continue to exploit an understanding that successful high streets are those that promote new forms of complementary relationships – in particular those between online retail and the traditional store; corporate retailers and small and specialist independent stores; and between high streets as retail spaces and high streets as spaces for leisure and social interaction – as well as good management.

Bonfire Night or just delicious cosy up entertaining

I love it when the clocks go back and the evenings get darker. Some find it gloomy, but for me, life suddenly seems more sociable. When it’s pitch black and icy cold outside, it’s a treat to ring a friend’s doorbell, present an offering of wine or food, and be welcomed into the warm glow inside. I think we have an inbuilt need for light and company at this time

of year, and Bonfire Night is the perfect excuse to invite people round to share home made food and the ‘Lights! Camera! Action!’ of fireworks. The recipes I’ve chosen can be transported and eaten like a winter picnic to keep you warm inside. They’re perfect for children and they can all be made in advance to save any worry on the night.

On the other hand if you are bonfired out and have planned an evening with few friends & family over the next week or so - this informal menu would be great for anytime throughout the cold winter months. To start with I have chosen Lebanese cheese parcels, from Leiths seminal tome, How to Cook. They make a great snack to stave off hun-

ger pangs and are like mini Cornish pasties but with a nice MiddleEastern twist. They mean no messy fingers, and you can wrap them up in tinfoil so they stay warm. Venison is in season at the moment, as are quinces, and their flavours complement each other beautifully, so it’s the perfect excuse to make a wonderful warming casserole with caramelised quince, again

Lebanese cheese parcels INGREDIENTS 1 Block of puff pastry Extra flour, to dust 1 egg Salt For the filling 100g full-fat cottage cheese 100g feta 100g mozzarella 1 lemon Small handful of dill or flat-leaf parsley sprigs Freshly ground black pepper METHOD 1. To make the filling, put the cottage cheese in a sieve set over a bowl, to

Venison Casserole with Caramelised Quince

MARINADE 1 onion 1 garlic clove 5 tbsp sunflower oil 6 juniper berries 1 slice of lemon 1 bay leaf 250ml red wine 2 tbsp red wine vinegar 6 black peppercorns CASSEROLE 650g venison 2–3 tbsp olive oil 1 onion 100g button mushrooms 1 garlic clove 30g butter 2 tsp plain flour 250ml chicken and veal stock 1 tbsp redcurrant jelly ¼ bunch of parsley Salt and freshly ground black pepper For the caramelised quince 100g caster sugar 100ml cider vinegar 200ml water 1 cinnamon stick

Spiced Apple Cake

This delicious cake makes the most of the wonderful flavour of Bramleys. You could also add a handful of blackberries in place of the raisins, in the autumn. Serves 8 INGREDIENTS 185g butter, softened, plus extra to grease 3 medium Bramley apples, about 700g 1 lemon 185g caster sugar 2 eggs, at room temperature 1 tbsp milk 225g self-raising flour 110g raisins For the topping 1½ tsp ground cinnamon

25g soft light brown sugar You will need a 20cm round cake tin. METHOD 1. Heat the oven to 180°C/gas mark 4. Lightly grease the cake tin and line the base with a disc of baking parchment. Peel, core and dice the apples into 1–2cm pieces. Finely grate the lemon zest and squeeze the juice, then stir both into the apple and set aside. 2. Using an electric whisk or wooden spoon, cream the butter and sugar together in a medium bowl until pale, light and fluffy. 3. Break the eggs into a small bowl and beat lightly, using a fork, until broken up. Gradually add the egg to the creamed mixture, in several additions, beating well after each addition. Stir in the milk. 4. Sift the flour over the mixture and scatter

drain. Discard the liquid and put the cheese in a bowl. Crumble in the feta and chop and add the mozzarella. Mash all the cheeses together with the back of a fork. 2. Finely grate enough lemon zest to give ½ tsp and add to the cheeses. Roughly chop enough dill or parsley leaves to give ½–1 tbsp and add to the mixture with a good grinding of pepper. Adjust the seasoning, herbs and lemon zest to taste. 3. Roll out the chilled pastry on a lightly floured surface to a 3mm thickness. Using a 10cm plain or fluted pastry cutter, cut out 8 or 9 circles. Divide the filling between the circles,

2 whole star anise 2 quinces 50g butter METHOD 1. Cut venison into large cubes, trim tough sinew. For marinade, halve, peel thickly slice onion, put into a bowl with venison. Peel and crush garlic. 2. Mix the rest of marinade ingredients, add to venison bowl. Mix, cover, leave to marinate in fridge overnight. 3. Heat the oven to 150°C/gas mark 2. 4. Lift venison from marinade and pat dry. Strain marinade, save liquid, discard aromatics. 5. Heat 1 tbsp of the olive oil in flameproof casserole, add one-third of venison, brown over medium heat, transfer to bowl using slotted spoon, deglaze pan with a little water; pour juices over browned venison pieces. Repeat to brown in batches, in the same way. 6. Halve, peel, finely dice onion. Slice mushrooms, peel and crush garlic. Melt butter in casserole, soften onion over gentle heat, increase the heat to brown. Add mushrooms, garlic, continue to cook for 2 minutes. 7. Stir in flour, cook for 1 minute. Remove from over the diced apples and raisins. Sprinkle over the lemon juice and stir until well combined. 5. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and level off a little with a spoon (it needn’t be completely smooth). 6. Mix together the topping ingredients and sprinkle evenly over the top of the cake mixture. 7. Bake in the middle of the oven for 1–1¼ hours until a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean, or with only a few moist crumbs clinging to it. 8. Remove from the oven and leave to cool in the tin for a few minutes, before removing to a wire rack to cool. Peel off the baking parchment and serve in slices. Brush a little beaten egg around the edge of each pastry circle. Fold each circle in half, encasing the filling, seal carefully to make halfmoon shaped parcels and brush with a little more of the beaten egg to glaze. Transfer to a baking sheet and chill until firm. Meanwhile, heat the oven to 200°C/gas mark 6. 5. Glaze the parcels again and bake in the oven until puffed up and lightly golden. Delicious served with caramelised onion marmalade.

Using slotted spoon, lift cooked venison, mushrooms, onion into serving dish, cover, keep warm. Boil sauce rapidly until reduced to shiny syrupy consistency and good concentration of flavour. 10. Finely chop enough parsley leaves for 1 tbsp. Adjust seasoning of the sauce, pour over the venison, mushrooms, onion, top with caramelised quinces; chopped parsley to serve.

BRUSSELS SPROUTS Studies tell us Brussels sprouts are good for us; findings include evidence that cruciferous vegetables as part of a healthy diet can help prevent as well as slow down the development of the big C. This underrated tiny cabbage also contains a very high Vitamin C content which if consumed regularly is great way to ward off seasonal winter snuffles. There are many tasty recipes around but here is one of my favourites and is apparently a great way to serve Brussel Sprouts to the unconverted! From the fabulous Yotam Ottolenghi you can find his books in most good book shops or go here for more information. http://www.ottolenghi.co.uk NUTRITIONAL CONTENT Vitamin A 15% Vitamin C 141% Calcium 4% Iron 7% Vitamin D 0% Vitamin B-6 10% Vitamin B-12 0% Magnesium 5% INGREDIENTS 600g brussels sprouts 120ml olive oil 300g baby shallots, peeled (or spring onions, white part only) 2 tbsp maple syrup Grated zest of 2 lemons 2 tsp pomegranate molasses Seeds of 2 small pomegranates (about 8 tbsp) 20g purple basil, leaves only, shredded Salt and black pepper

METHOD Trim off the ends of the sprouts and cut them in two lengthways. Heat up a large wok or nonstick pan, and add two tablespoons of oil. Fry half the sprouts on high heat for about four minutes, until nicely golden brown all over but still quite crunchy. Transfer to a mixing bowl and keep somewhere warm. Add more oil to the pan and repeat with the remaining sprouts. Add two tablespoons of oil to the pan and fry the shallots as you did the sprouts, for four to six minutes. Add to the sprout bowl. Add the maple syrup, lemon zest, molasses and remaining oil to the still warm vegetables. Add half the pomegranate seeds and half the basil, season generously and toss to mix. Serve warm or at room temperature, with the remaining pomegranate seeds and basil sprinkled on top.

Dear Extra Local, As a former service man can I reflect on Remembrance Sunday 8, November 2015 this coincides with the start of. A new century of remembrances to our fallen comrades in two world wars and post war theatres of conflicts. Remembrance Sunday also coincides with my Great uncle Arthur Bradshaw death - November 8, 1914 1st battle of Ypres whose name has only recently been added to our Kettering war memorial some 3 year ago.

Traditionally “O valiant heart” is the anthem of The Royal British legion, our Kettering parish church has been magnanimous in supporting over the years this traditional respect for fallen comrades as well as their own congregation honoured on brass plaques like nearly every church in the land and played at the London cenotaph with the Queen our royal British legions royal patron it would be appropriate at the start of a new Century to confirm our national allegiance of national unity and blessing with that famous poem of Col. John McRae 1872-1918 Take up our quarrel with the foe to you from failing hands we throw, The torch be yours to hold it high, If you break faith with us who die we shall not sleep, Though Poppies grow in Flanders fields. So the torch has been passed to a new century and new generation that will always honour those immortal words - At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will. Remember them also on Armistice Day.. O risen Lord o shepherd of our own dead, Whose cross has bought them and whose staff has led, In glorious hope their proud and sorrowing Land, Commits her people to thy gracious hand. “Following a series of tests on a knee injury picked up during a pre-season game at Enfield, AFC Rushden & Diamonds defender Jack Ashton has been advised he needs an operation to repair an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL). After trying to battle on with the injury, despite being in obvious pain during early season games, Jack has been unable to play for several weeks, and is now looking to have the operation done as soon as possible so he can get back to full fitness without delay. The cost of this operation is £2000, and the club would like to assist Jack by arranging a fundraising effort to help towards that cost. We are going to organise a bucket collection at the fixture against Egham at the Dog & Duck on Saturday. We are also planning a donation facility via the club shop – details will follow. Jack has been a very popular member of the squad since joining the club, and has been instrumental in our success over the last couple of seasons, so we feel it is only right to give the supporters the opportunity to help him in his hour of need.”

EXTRA SPORT • LOCAL BOWLS COUNTY PLAYER OFF TO HONG KONG FOR ENGLAND The Hong Kong Lawn Bowls Association (HKLBA) will be hosting the world acclaimed Hong Kong International Bowls Classic tournament between the7th November and the15thNovember 2015. The event was inaugurated in 1981and over the successive years the HKLBA has invited more than 730 top class overseas bowlers to take part in the tournament which has gained an international reputation as a top class prestigious event in the world’s bowling calendar. It was initially for male bowlers, but a women’s tournament was introduced in 2008 to run alongside the men’s event. One of the County’s finest young female bowlers, Rebecca Wigfield, Desborough BC is off to represent England in the event. She will be joined by Rebecca Field of Norfolk, and both will play in the Knock-out Singles event on the 7th and 8th November, 2015, and they will then join together for the Women’s Pairs on the 9th November. Venues : Kowloon Bowling Green Club (KBGC), Club de Recreio (CdeR) & Kowloon Cricket Club (KCC) and the participating countries include : Australia, Brunei, China, England, Ireland, Japan, Macao, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Scotland and Wales (12 overseas countries) Total number of players is128 players in Singles event, played on the 7th and 8th November, which comprises 40 overseas and 88 local participants, and 96 players in pairs played on the 9th to the 15th November, comprising 40 Overseas players and 56 local top players. Objectives of the event are : To give the opportunity to : - a) local players to play against world class bowlers from overseas, and b) spectators and bowlers to experience top class competition. Rebecca will be playing Singles at 9.00 a.m. on the 7th November, 2015, against a local Hong Kong player, Shirley Ma, and we wish her every success in hopefully reaching the latter stages, and indeed winning the tournament. The Pairs schedule shows the setting up of two groups, and the two Rebecca’s will be in Group C with 11 matches against a number of local Club qualifiers, plus the entries from Malaysia, Japan, Ireland and Australia, with their first encounter being at 12 noon on the 9th November, 2015.. The Singles is played in the 1st Rounds in 2 sets of 7 ends, with a tie break if necessary, with the length increased to 9 ends per set for the 3rd and subsequent rounds. The Pairs will be played as 3 wood pairs played in 2 sets of 9 ends with tie break if necessary, and there is a 2.5 hours limit set per match. England also has male representation, they being Steve Mitchinson of Essex and Chris Gale of Lancashire, both former International players. Geoff Hunt, Wellingborough BC. Geoff was elected Chairman of the ‘Friends of English Bowling’ at its AGM earlier this year, after being on its Committee for the past 6 years. ‘The Friends’ was formed in 2005 with its principal aim being to provide financial support for outdoor flat green bowls, and since its inception it has provided around £30,000 of support for the provision of assistance with Youth Projects, and sponsorship for several of the National Championships and Competitions. The organisation also provides social and recreational activities for its members to aid the promotion of the sport, and to support Bowls England in its promotion of the pleasures and achievements of bowls. Conscious that Northamptonshire had not provided a President since the late George Wills in 2003, he decided to put his name forward following discussions with the Northamptonshire Indoor Association, and he was duly elected. His responsibilities will be to Captain the Midland Counties in its programme of matches with Clubs and other Associations, and to be the leader for his period in office in the other activities of the organisation. Keith took up indoor bowling when Desborough IBC opened over 25 years ago, and although he does not claim to be a top bowler, he really enjoys

Keith was elected to the office of Northamptonshire Indoor President in 2010, and he discharged his responsibilities with pride at having been given that honour. He has also been involved with the Northamptonshire Bowls Youth Development Scheme since its inception 10 years ago, and is one of the 4 Chairmen, representing the Indoor Association on its Management Committee, and this role has enabled him to help in the development of youth bowling in the County. Poppies Poppy Appeal support “As part of our annual support for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, we welcome members of the Burton Latimer British Legion to Latimer Park on Saturday, November 14. To mark the 70th year of the end of the Second World War, players will wear specialedition poppies on their shirts during the game, and before kick-off, members from Burton Latimer British Legion regiment will form a guard of honour to welcome The Poppies and Burscough teams on to the pitch. Please show your respects by taking part in the minute’s silence which will take place ahead of kick-off. James King Blisworth travelled away to Harpole with high hopes of gaining some more points and keeping up with league leaders Weldon United but suffered their first defeat of the season, 3-0. Harpole goals from: Shaun Markie, Dean Mills and Daniel Surridge. 9th place Kettering Nomads went all out and had an 11-0 goal fest against lowly 14th placed Stanion United. Milton beat Moulton 3-1 to move themselves 3 places up the league table. Weldon United kept a clean sheet and managed another win beating Heyford Athletic 3-0 to put themselves 5 points clear at the top of the table. Weldon goals from: Iain Blaikie, Michael Harman and Richard Moore. Duston Garage Division 1 Top of the table Corby Pegasus hosted bottom markers Weedon and it was the high flyers who came out on top 7-2. Weedon are still yet to win a game. Weedon goals from Curtis Lindeman x2. Gretton suffered 4-0 defeat on home soil at the hands of Wellingborough Rising Sun. Spratton moved themselves into the 3rd spot after beating AFC Corby Shamrock by the narrowest of margins 3-2. Wollaston Victoria had a close game against Finedon Volta and just edged the win 3-2. Corby Eagles travelled away to Wootton St George and were left empty handed after a 4-1 defeat. Duston Garage Division 2 Weldon United Reserves continued their good form with a dominating 4-2 win over local rivals Corby Locomotives. Weldon conceded early with an error but soon got themselves in front with quick-fire goals from Ryan Britton and Liam Duffy. Weldon continued on top in the second half with another goal added from Kyle Jardine and another blinder before further mix-up allowed Locos their second. West Haddon Albion beat Higham Town 4-1 to keep themselves in a strong 2nd place 5 points behind the league leaders. Higham many conflicts in recent years, some of our Service Personnel have received such severe injuries that they will possibly need help for many decades to come, largely due to the young age at which they were wounded It is for this reason that contributions to The Poppy Appeal are so important and we are extremely grateful to you all for your generous support past and present. On occasions we have erected a display tent, in approved areas, to give us an opportunity to let the local community know we are active and also answer any questions they may raise. The Branch also arranges and organises, on behalf of The Burton Latimer Town Council, and takes part in, the Parade on Remembrance Sunday each year. Optimism wanes with 4 from Curzon Corby Town 0 Curzon Ashton 4, Saturday 24th October Beforehand there was great optimism that this was going to be the afternoon the Steelmen got their season back on track as Curzon Ashton had yet to register an away win this season. Corby began well and after just eleven minutes were awarded a penalty. Spencer Weir-Daley took the kick but visiting goalkeeper Hakan Burton dived to make a save at the foot of the post. In the 16th minute a cross from the left was powerfully headed in by Niall Cummins and Curzon Ashton never looked back. St Ives Town 0 Kettering Town 1, Saturday 24th October, FA Trophy Gary Mulligan scored a 74th minute winner to send Kettering Town through to the Second Round Qualifying of the FA Trophy with a 1-0 victory over a spirited St Ives Town. The Irish midfielder looped a header past Tim Trebes after Dominic Langdon had raced in behind the visitors’ defence and crossed. Marcus Law’s side will now face Burscough FC at home on November 14, in the next round. Dubi Ogbonna then went on to miss a first-half penalty, blazing his effort straight at Trebes as Kettering dominated the opening period after a slow start. The Poppies only other clear chance of the first half being a long range shot from James Brighton that Trebes acrobatically tipped over the bar. St Ives Town lacked penetration in the opening period but fared far better after the break and had several opportunities to draw level. Kettering were then fortunate that keeper, Craig Hill, was in the right place to prevent Danny Watson’s close range effort.
