Recycling efforts pay off for all residents > Borough

In Short Everyone’s thoughts are on recycling these days but the Borough Council of Wellingborough has turned thoughts into action and saved taxpayers more than £300,000 by changing the way it disposes of our waste. Rubbish has been turned into more than £300,000 towards vital local services thanks to increased recycling efforts by the people of Wellingborough. Figures released by the Borough Council show that residents are recycling more than ever - generating hundreds of thousands of pounds to help fund local services through a new waste disposal contract. Previously, it cost taxpayers around £12 a tonne to dispose of recycling, but the new contract means the contents of residents’ green bins translate directly into cash, resulting in an income of

more than £300,000 this year for the council. Council officers negotiated a deal with Ideal Waste Paper Co Ltd and now get paid for every tonne of paper, metal, plastic and glass sent for recycling. Before the new contract was signed, the council’s recycling budget was £174,657, including account collection costs and a significant amount for disposal. As the council is no longer paying for disposal, the actual spend for this year is expected to be £72,700 saving £101,885. The additional income from the new arrangement is expected to be in the region of £244,000 - which comes from payments from the contractor and also an amount of government recycling credits - so the overall income will be £345,885. Even taking into account unexpected costs such as fuel increases; the council is likely to see savings of around £320,000 for the year on its recycling budget.

Councillor Peter Morrall, chairman of Wellingborough Council’s community committee, said: “We’re really proud of the recycling service we offer our residents. Not only do we now receive income for the materials collected instead of paying for it to be disposed of, but we’ve also been able to increase the amount of items, such as glass bottles and plastic bags, that can be thrown into the green bin. Because it’s so easy to do we’d really encourage residents to make sure they recycle as much as possible - not only is it great for the environment but it also generates money which has a direct effect on taxpayers as we can use it to help fund other services.” Stewart Lewis, account manager at contractors Ideal Waste Paper said: “Since we’ve had the contract, the borough’s recycling figures have risen from 5,614 tonnes a year to 7,000 tonnes. The more recycling we process, the more money we can pay the council.”

EACH year, the Waendel Walk welcomes thousands of visitors from all parts of the world, and advance booking have opened for this year’s event. Now in its 33rd year, the weekend of walking, cycling, swimming and entertainment kicks off with an opening ceremony and parade on the evening on Friday 11 May at 6pm and events include walks of a number of distances, a swim and a cycle route, as well as entertainment throughout the weekend.

Titanic exhibition launches Sunday lending at our libraries series of major events > wellingborough

Local news of great ship’s demise is focus of current exhibition > Castle Way MAJOR events are reflected in recent activities at Wellingborough Museum, where the focus has turned to the Olympics, the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic, and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Using 100-year-old newspaper cuttings and information from the Family History Society, the museum has put together a touching tribute to those who lost their lives when the Titanic went down in the North Atlantic in April 1912. Passengers with local connections included two postmen from Wollaston and a baker from Wellingborough who were off to start a new life in America. In addition, the museum has a collection of right shoes which are the partners to those that were being transported to America by a sales rep from a Northampton shoe company. The salesman had all the left shoes to show off to potential buyers in the States, but all were lost when the ship went down. The Titanic exhibition officially opened on April 14 when visitors took

part in deck games and were entertained by an orchestra ensemble like the one that would have played for passengers on the Titanic, and will run until May 12 between the hours of 10am and 4.30pm. On Saturday April 22, Henry VIII will be guest of honour at a celebration of St George’s Day, but he will have to share the limelight with a host of crusaders and dragon slayers to mark England’s Saint’s Day.

Looking further into the future, Wellingborough doesn’t boast too many past Olympians, but the museum has caught up with Anita Neil, who represented Great Britain at both the 1968 Mexico Games and the 1972 Munich Games in the 100 metres and the 4 x 100metres relay. Anita still lives in Wellingborough and gave a series of interviews to the museum about her experiences in the greatest sporting competition, while the lower gallery is currently home to a celebration of the Queen’s 60 years on the throne, with official photographs, press cuttings and memorabilia from visits to the town forming the basis of the exhibition. Wellingborough Museum, Castle

Way, Wellingborough is open 10am to 4.30pm Monday to Saturday. For further information telephone 01933 276838.

WELLINGBOROUGH Library will be joining libraries throughout the county in opening their doors on Sundays, starting on April 22. The changes were implemented on April 16, so now the library will open on Sunday afternoons from 1pm to 4pm. During the week, the library will continue to open betweem 8 am and 6pm. Saturday hours will remain 9am to 5pm. Wollaston Library will be open on Sundays from 1pm to 4pm, and will maintain its usual hours throughout the week - 2pm to 6pm weekdays and 10am to 2pm on Saturdays. The changes follow a consultation period in which users were asked about library services. It is thought that the Sunday opening will make the libraries more accessible to those who can’t visit during the week. Included in the extended opening times will be improved access to the council’s self service and online services and the opportunity to make Blue Badge and bus pass applications.

Rachel Mallows of The Mallows Company believes the event is a perfect opportunity to meet everybody’s needs. She said: “When we set up the ROSE fairs back in December 2011, we were ultimately trying to help those who were out of work. Of course what we’ve now become are ‘job matchmakers’ because we can also solve a company’s headache of finding and accessing the right people to fill those empty roles. No mystery about Ken’s new role New Mayor has played a varied role in community life

Name game triumph > Wellingborough

THE children’s unit at Kettering General Hospital’s £30m extension has been named Skylark Ward by 14-year-old Wellingborough girl Nicole Bird. She came up with the name in the competition, which had the theme Above The Treetops, and will be invited to open the new ward when the hospital wing opens in September.

> Wellingborough THERE’S no mystery about the new Mayor of Wellingborough although many townspeople will know him from his love of the murder mystery genre. Councillor Ken Harrington wrote and ran murder mystery nights around Northamptonshire, although his time in office is likely to be rather more straightforward. Cllr Harrington, who will be sworn in as Mayor at a meeting of a council on May 15, was born in Surrey and moved to Wellingborough 40 years ago. He has enjoyed a long career in the motor industry and has played a prominent role in the community throughout that time, running his murder mystery nights for 13 years, as well as taking on the role of president of the Chamber of Trade and Commerce, and he is currently president of Wellingborough Hatton Rotary Club. Cllr Harrington is married to Jean, who will be his consort for the mayoral year, and they have four children, nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Elected to the borough council in 1995, Cllr Harrington has served as ward councillor for Redwell East since then. He has been a member

An array of local businesses attended a Coffee with Cops at a breakfast event organised by the Wellingborough BID. The coffee morning, at Bewiched Cafe in Church Street, had been organised so that businesses could have an informal chat with their town centre police officers. One of the issues that businesses and retailers in the town felt needing addressing was the skateboarding and inappropriate cycling in the town centre. They were given assurance from Sector Inspector Nick Lyall of Wellingborough Safer Community Team that the Police were working to address these issues by educating adults and youth alike, and would look at issuing anti-social behaviour orders for persistent offenders. A number of retailers, both independent and

coffee: “Morning all” national chains, asked if town centre crime, such as shoplifting was on the increase. They were informed that even given the current economic climate that figures - to be issued next month were likely to show a significant decrease. This in part is attributed to Wellingborough’s robust policy and high presence of PSCOs. John Cable, Wellingborough BID Manager said: “This inaugural event was a good opportunity for town centre businesses to express any concerns they had and to let the police know what they can do to help. We anticipate, given the turn out to this event, that future ‘coffee with cops’ will take place.”

Essential advice for later in life

Special advice for the over 50s on new ways to keep fit and healthy supported by Northamptonshire NHS A SPECIAL new event that gives the over 50s essential advice and information as well as introduction to new ways to stay fit and well will take place in Wellingborough this week. Later life matters is a day-long event organised by Wellingborough council and nene valley community action on thursday april 19. the day will include 30 exhibitions offering talks on a range of health-related issues as well as information on subjects such as benefit entitlements and tips to stay fit and healthy. young volunteers will also be on hand to show participants how to get to grips with technology such the internet, mobile phones and games consoles, and there will be the

chance to take advantage of therapy treatments running throughout the day including reiki, indian head massage and hand reflexology. there may be a small charge for treatments. entertainment from local bands and choirs will take place in the hall. Cllr Eileen Higgins, Chairman of Wellingborough council’s older persons’ advisory panel said: “we know that there are a lot of older people out there who don’t know what services are available to them or what benefits or grants they could be entitled to. “We wanted to bring all these services together into one place to make it easy for people to access. but we didn’t want to put on an event that meant people simply wandered around an exhibition

hall picking up leaflets, so we’ve made the day social and interactive too. “We have young people helping bridge the generation gap by demonstrating popular console games that their grandchildren might be into, or helping explain the technology that older people may be a bit wary of, such as texting and emails. we also have interesting short talks and live music to keep people entertained. there’s a huge amount happening and we’re really excited about what promises to be a fun and informative day.” Later life matters will take place between 10am and 4pm at the castle theatre, Wellingborough. the event is supported by Northamptonshire county council and Northamptonshire nhs.

EXTRA LETTERS & LOCAL RANTS READ ALL ABOUT IT LATEST TWEETS... Just a couple of things about the first issue which I think are perhaps worthy of your consideration:Why, in the 'Locals are the face of Extra' item, do you refer to all four of these 'locals' by their status, namecheck and interview three of them, show photographs of two of them and make no further reference to the luckless 'family butcher'? In his position, I'd be a bit fed up! Also, this is a fortnightly publication and although the first issue is dated 4 April I didn't see it on sale until yesterday, when I discovered that both competitions had a closing date of 11 April - not a very satisfactory situation in that even at the modest price of 50p the opportunity to enter these should be available to all your readers, not just the early birds. All in all, however, I was pretty impressed with the paper and hope you will take these criticisms in the spirit in which they are intended. Regards Una Adams.

this, we are a small team who are working hard to bring local news and features of interest to local people. We are slowly getting there.

Editor - Thank very much for your letter, we unfortunately need to have a competiotion cut off so that we can print the answer or winner in the next publication – but we are looking into this to see if we could extend. Extra is available in newstands and supermarkets all over the county – we are sorry you couldn’t find a copy earlier but probbaly very good news for us as possibly your retail newsagent had sold out! and had to re-order!

Extra last week and must say am very impressed. The newspaper is obviously written both by and for people who live in our area, and is a really good read. Being a relative newcomer to the area, I had no idea just how much is going on in our town, and it was good to get an unbiased, well-reported insight into a number of local issues. I hope this will mean that in future our community will be better informed on matters which affect us and our way of life – and that residents and people working here will also be able to give their opinions via the paper. I was also impressed with the ‘magazine quality’ of the various articles towards the back, it’s almost like having both a paper and a glossy supplement all in one publication. Congratulations, and I hope the next issues will be equally interesting and worthwhile. Keep it up! Ray.

I picked up a copy of the Corby

Editor -Thank you very much for

Dear..EXTRA I would like to complain about the lack of parent and baby spaces in the council car parks in Kettering town centre. Every car park I go to there are an abundance of Disabled spaces, quite right too, but it’s a search for the parent and baby spaces. It can be hard work getting a little one in and out of a car and you need the car doors wide open to secure your child properly. I fear scratching a neighbouring car in the smaller spaces. I haven’t found any in the Cornmarket car park, the car park behind the post office and Marks and Spencer’s or the School lane car park-why is this? Do the council want us to take our trade elsewhere? Perhaps a clue to all the closed shops in the town centre if you are deterring the mums pound! A Kettering Mum

Editor - I quite understand the content of your letter and sympathize with your situation. I would be interested to know more and perhaps we could adopt this topic as an Extra campaign.

Date night or disaster?

ORRR: Butter wouldn’t melt

EXPERTS tell us that we should keep the romance in our relationship by having Date Nights, time spent focussing on the two of you. Is this the stuff of dreams or reality? First the logistics of a sitter, why is this always the woman’s job? The actual evening doesn’t start well when you are stressed by having to change twice. Baby sick and leaking milk - Chanel it ain’t! Add to this the depression you feel as you can’t get into the outfit you wanted to wear, realise it’s the first time you have looked properly into a mirror for ages (where did those wrinkles come from!), and can you afford to eat out once you have shelled out for a babysitter? Remember when

getting ready for a date used to take hours, if not days, of preparation and discussing what to wear, what to talk about and what was going to happen? The post mortem afterwards with friends, happy days. Finally you make it out the door, stressed, and spend journey discussing if sitter is going to be OK? All goes well at first (although doesn’t the OH look tired) and you start to relax a little. But this new focus of your life (and that’s no bad thing) slowly starts to creep back into the conversation and the rest of the evening passes talking about the little darling/s. Well why not! You dreamed of having them, have wasted hours gazing at them as babes, and still pass time wistfully

thinking about their future. Well its 9pm, you are both shattered and turn down dessert to rush home and check all is well. Bank balanced emptied on meal and sitter, you both crawl into bed exhausted. Romantic? not really. Exhausting and expensive, and energy and spare cash don’t tend to be in abundance in the early days of parenthood, if ever. But you tried, and my view is that the trying is important. It doesn’t have to be a meal out, even a cup of tea; just the two of you alone can be special if you try. It’s the trying which will make a difference to the daily grind, and that’s where you will find the romance. Clare owns Mocha Mama at the Glendon Farm Complex, Kettering and will be writing every issue. www.mocha-mama.co.uk

THE STORY of St George and the legendary dragon has been told to children over centuries, but visitors to Kenilworth Castle’s patriotic celebration will be joined by a brand new largerthan-life reptile, as English Heritage unveils its new dragon! The fearsome new dragon joined a respected line of dragons that have graced English Heritage’s re-enactments over the years, each putting in a good fight against the noble knight, St George. This year’s event will see the dragon pitted against a St George of some pedigree, played by historic re-enactor and swordsman, Mark Vance, in a thrilling combat show! “It takes a special type of dragon to die two or three times a day in front of an audience of thousands, but we think we’ve found just the character for our St George’s Day pageant at Kenilworth Castle,” comments English Heritage’s regional events manager, Karen Pike. “We are confident that this dragon will give our St George a run for his money, as he should be more nimble than our last wyvern, which means even more thrills for the audience!” Alongside storytelling – not only about the traditional legend, but also a legend that reveals Coventry as St George’s original home - and the ultimate confrontation between George and the dragon, visitors will also be able to wander around a medieval living history encampment, where they will meet all kinds of characters from the 15thcentury who are taking a break from their usual toils to enjoy the celebrations of the feast of St George, and take in the delicious smells of food fit for a knight cooking over an open fire! The weekend will also feature hands-on activities and trails, plus a chance to look at and handle some of the armour worn by a medieval knight. St George and the Dragon is part of Kenilworth Castle’s medieval season of events and activities being held between April and September. Fight or flight?

Choosing an Airline is no longer a one click on line solution with almost every supplier applying additional charges to their apparent cheap flights. Online check In, hidden levy's, checked in baggage and that's not even including the enhanced features of Priority Boarding, Extra Legroom, Emergency Exit Seats and Extra Luggage Allowance. You are then asked if you would like any extra products or insurance, and if you decide to visit the golf course or the slopes your experience isn't finished there with additional fees for these. This does however come at a price, a cheaper flight. Read the terms and conditions and always have travel insurance whether it be from the airlines or from another supplier.

All-New Ford Escape provides you with more towing power than the competition Due to it’s Lean Yet Strong EcoBoost Engine

The all-new Ford Escape’s 2.0-ltr EcoBoost® engine provides up to 3,500 pounds of towing capability – best in class among small turbocharged SUVs, and as much as the outgoing 3.0-litre V6 engine. The smaller engine provides higher efficiency without sacrificing power. With trailer sway control, the all-new Ford Escape can tow two personal watercraft on a trailer or a small boat, with no worry for the driver. Packing 240 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque, the optional 2.0-litre EcoBoost® engine in the all-new 2013 Ford Escape enables the vehicle to tow 3,500 pounds – best in class among small SUVs with turbocharged four-cylinder engines. 2.0-litre EcoBoost® engine delivers the ultimate combination of fuel economy, performance and capability that SUV customers with active lifestyles need in today’s environment of record-high fuel prices.

The next closest competitor, the Volkswagen Tiguan, has a tow rating of just 2,200 pounds, while turbocharged versions of Kia Sportage and Acura RDX have tow ratings of 2,000 pounds and 1,500 pounds respectively. Escape’s greater towing capability is roughly equal to two jet skis or a snowmobile and the trailer they ride on. The ability to carry greater loads will save Escape drivers both time and fuel by reducing the number of trips needed. Travel is also made safer with trailer sway control, a class-exclusive feature among small SUVs with turbocharged four-cylinder engines. The 2.0-litre EcoBoost® engine replaces the 3.0-litre V6 engine in the current Escape with no loss of performance and with fuel economy to be higher than the V6’s 19 mpg city, 25 mpg highway EPA rating. “Smaller-displacement engines have a fundamental efficiency advantage,” said Roger Maynard, Powertrain supervisor for the 2013 Ford Escape. “These inherent efficiencies are improved with the EcoBoost technology of direct fuel injection and turbocharging.” The all-new Escape will be available with a choice of three fourcylinder engines. In addition to the 2.0-litre EcoBoost® EcoBoost, Escape will be offered with a 1.6-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder rated at 177 horsepower and a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder cranking out 171 horsepower. All three engines are mated to a fuelsaving six-speed automatic transmission. Escape also features EPAS – electric power-assisted steering – a fuel-saver as well. EcoBoost has been a popular choice among customers since the EcoBoost V6 engine was introduced in 2009 in the Ford Taurus SHO and Lincoln MKS. Last year, Ford sold more than 127,000 EcoBoost-equipped vehicles. Using some of the same technologies found in diesel engines, EcoBoost can improve fuel economy by as much as 20 percent over larger, conventional engines. This year, Ford is expanding its EcoBoost engine technology to not only Escape but Fusion as well. These engines are fundamental to the Ford strategy of providing technologically advanced, high-output, smaller-displacement powertrains that deliver exceptional fuel economy and uncompromised performance for millions of drivers around the world. By next year, more than 90 percent of Ford’s North American lineup will be available with EcoBoost technology. Ford holds more than 125 patents on this engine technology.

Top car choices for sons and daughters Predicting who will buy which type of car has always been difficult for vehicle manufacturers, but nevertheless they do not make cars without knowing the target market and matching each model to specific demographic groups. There are naturally exceptions, but generally demographics play a huge part in how new models of cars are marketed. Large saloon and estate cars are usually aimed at families and are often driven by Dads. Mums tend to be less concerned with visual appeal and performance so are likely to choose MPVs or SUVs for the security that a bigger car offers. As people get older they are more inclined to drive a car that is reliable with cheaper running costs and perhaps some extra space for trips out with the grandchildren. Sons and Daughters. The young male driver is likely to go for a car which is both sporty and cool but this will depend on how much money they or their parents have available and their restrictions on what they will permit their sons to drive given safety concerns. Daughters often choose cars that are smaller and easier to drive, with phone devices and music being a priority. Naturally these are broad generalisations and stereotyping people in terms of which cars they are likely to purchase by sex or age could easily attract criticism, yet this seems to work for the car manufacturing industry. Using these demographics and looking at vehicles currently on the market we have come up with some suggestions for parents who are thinking about purchasing a car for their sons or daughters, some of which are cheap and others less so. The Citroen DS3 came onto the market in 2010 and since then has won many prestigious awards for its style and performance in the supermini range. French manufactured, this car was the primary model of the premium DS line. Citroen have long been renowned for their outstanding diesel and THP petrol engines both in terms of performance and running costs. The DS3 can be customised with a whole range of technology including an MP3/CD player, cruise control and LED running lights. However, the style options that are available with this car really make it a popular choice. There is a wide and diverse range of exteriors to choose from together with purchasers being able to select contrasting roof and wing mirror colours. Also available are alloy wheels and wheel caps. The DS3 sits in the more expensive end of the market but is hard to beat for style and performance.Suzuki SwiftAn absolutely fantastic supermini, the Suzuki manufactured Swift will match perfectly with the image that most young male drivers want to create. Despite being relatively compact it does have a magnificent sporty look and the latest models have more gadgetry than the previous range. Technology includes a USB port, Bluetooth and a CD player and the style is guaranteed to impress even the most discerning of peers. With very economic running costs and a variety of engine sizes to choose from, the Swift has great performance and has attained the Euro NCAP maximum 5 stars for safety due to its ESP (Electronic Stability Programme) which is standard across the range, antiwhiplash front seats and additional safety kit. Ford Ka The Ford Ka has been in the marketplace for several years and is particularly popular with female drivers making it an ideal choice for a daughter’s first car.Wide rear haunches defined the previous model of the Ka, but the latest model is much more dynamic and stylishle and owners can add chrome inserts and stripes if desired, including congestion charges. As first cars go, you can guarantee that your son or daughter will be attracted to these models .

Vauxhall Ampera: the first real-world solution to electric car ownership Taking its lead from the 2007 Flextreme and GTC concept cars the Ampera takes Vauxhall’s award winning design language into the EV segment. Distinctive ‘boomerang’ headlamp housings – a new element of the Vauxhall’s design language – are a clear Ampera identifier, as is its prominent grille and bold Vauxhall Griffin. Every aspect of this revolutionary car has been designed and analysed for efficiency, making it one of the most aerodynamic, energy-conserving vehicles on the market. “The Ampera takes Vauxhall’s new design language into the electric vehicle segment and it redefines how such cars look as well as perform,” said British-born Mark Adams, Vice President of Design at Opel/Vauxhall. “We have focused on giving the Ampera a visual appeal that’s as strong and compelling as its driving dynamics and efficiency.” Inside, the Ampera is de-

signed to reflect the unique, ground-breaking nature of its propulsion system. The cabin takes Vauxhall’s distinctive ‘wing’ front fascia design to the next level, with two colour displays and touch-screen functionality now replacing conventional instrument dials and controls. Futuristic, easy to use and intelligent, the driver interface of the Ampera combines stylish execution with innovative functionality. The cabin offers all the space, comfort, and convenience features you would expect from a premium compact car: five-door Flexibility, comfortable accommodation for four adults, and a load carrying capacity of more than 300 litres. The battery pack is located low down in the centre of the car, which enables the use of flatfolding rear seat-backs. The Ampera’s impressive, ground-hugging stance is created by wide front and rear tracks (1,551 / 1,572mm), with sleek, low bodywork wrapping 17-inch, five-spoke alloy

wheels positioned at the outer edges of the wheel-arches. The sweeping windscreen/ roof-line flows over a glasshouse which is stretched by a black shoulder line under the side windows diving forward of the A-pillar. The boomerang motifs are slashed vertically into the deep front fascia, with the black cut-outs housing iceblue LED daytime running lights, powerful bi-halogen headlamps and front fog lamps. The lower portions of the boomerang elements frame an air intake that mirrors the shape of the signature Vauxhall grille above it. A black cut-out in the rear bumper fascia echoes the shape of the front air intake, and combines with vertical slots in the side panels to give the rear of the Ampera a sporty character to match its dramatic frontal styling. The high rear deck features a flat spoiler integrated into the tailgate above narrow tail lamp units, which are underlined by a chrome bar – with

a prominent Vauxhall Griffin – that visually stretches the width of the vehicle. The wedgelike profile is emphasise d by the black shoulder line which is subtly aligned with the front and rear light units. The exterior colour choice comprises seven finishes: Black and White solids, Grey, Silver and Blue metallic colours, and Red and White premium finishes. The Ampera’s sleek looks also encapsulate excellent aerodynamics to help maximise driving range and lower emissions still further. Opel/ Vauxhall engineers and designers worked together to ensure the Ampera cleaves the air as efficiently as possible. The success of their work is reflected in an exception-

ally low aerodynamic drag co-efficient. By reducing the energy needed to overcome air resistance, they have added an estimated eight miles to the car’s battery driving range, and 50 miles to its total extended range. An aggressive rake on the windshield and rear screen helps reduce turbulence and drag, while airflow around the front fascia and doormounted rear-view mirrors has been optimised. In the rear, sharp edges and the carefully designed spoiler control airflow. Those vertical slots

in the bumper also create a clean point of separation for air passing around the side of the car. Malcolm Ward, Ampera chief designer and Opel/Vauxhall Director Exterior Design, said: “The vertical slots at the outer edge of the rear bumper not only emphasise the wide track and stance, but also serve an important aerodynamic function. By providing clean airflow separation, they help reduce aerodynamic drag. The long, thin tail lamps also enhance the Ampera’s high-tech looks.”

Third place for Phoenix youngsters Taking to the crease Under 13s take bronze medal against powerhouse opposition > Wellingborough

Wellingborough Phoenix U13s put in a very strong showing at the club’s first appearance at the National Final Fours stage in Nottingham. Beginning with a tough assignment against pre-tournament favourites Manchester, Phoenix opponents’ strength in depth told as Wellingborough had four players foul out in a 98-71 defeat. Wellingborough had started brightly, with Hayden Alcindor knocking in the first eight points, but a flurry of missed free throws to close the period sent Manchester into the break with a 20-14 advantage. A great effort in the second period managed to keep the gap to single digits at the half time break mainly due to 12 points from Keenan Salmon who began to find his way through the Manchester defence at will. Jordan McGee added a three pointer on his

way to seven points midway through the third period to close the gap, but Manchester responded with an 18 – 6 run to take the game away from Phoenix as the Wellingborough starters began to tire, despite a mammoth effort from Trei St Vie, on his way to 24 points, but it was the favourites who led 98-71 at the close. Two hours later the Phoenix team were back on court, refreshed and with a chance to finish the season on a high, and this they managed, with a terrific display against a strong Leeds side, who had lost their semi final 75-60 to the eventual champions Newham, running out 79-68 winners. After a quiet opening Phoenix jumped in front with eight points each from Keenan Salmon and Hayden Alcindor to lead 41-28 at the half-time break. Hosepipe ban advice for struggling sports clubs Sport England to help keep pitches green > County CLUBS struggling to keep pitches in good condition during the hosepipe ban have been offered vital advice from Northamptonshire Sport in conjunction with Sport England. It is thought that around four out of every 10 outdoor sports pitches in England will be affected by the restrictions. With water crucial to maintaining the quality and safe performance of many outdoor surfaces, governing bodies of sports have come together with Sport England to put together a document that offers advice on how to maintain pitches and courts effectively during drought conditions; making the best use of rainfall when it does occur; managing the use of pitches to reduce the risk of damage; using water more effectively and working with the water companies to negotiate possible exemptions. The document will not only support sports clubs directly affected by the hosepipe ban, but will also encourage clubs outside the ban area to use the limited water more effectively and to make their facilities more resilient, which will help ensure their longevity. Current legislation only provides very limited exemptions for sports facilities, such as for staging national and international fixtures, but in exceptional cases sports clubs can secure an agreement to water their pitches from their water company. DRY PERIOD: Help is at hand for clubs struggling during the hosepipe ban said: “We have been supporting the excellent lead taken by a number of governing bodies by working with them on the impact of climate change on pitch sports. The recent announcement of hosepipe bans has reinforced the importance of this area of work. I am, therefore, pleased that we can jointly release this new guidance to help clubs to play their part during this period of water shortage and control.” Bruce Cruse, National Funding and Facilities Manager at the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), said: “ECB welcomes this initiative from Sport England. In our sport, watering pitches is vital to maintain safe pitches and keep our sport functioning throughout the summer. We recognise the importance of conserving water and have ourselves commissioned expert advice on this subject and are now communicating to our clubs ideas for saving water.” Clubs are encouraged to begin discussions with their water company now to make their case and to ensure that they fully understand the practical implications of the proposed water restrictions.
