Knust uses Riso and Ricoh Priport digital duplicators, traditionally known as stencilmachine, mimeograph, Schablonen-Vervielfältiger or cyclostyle. Nowadays they are often referred to as Risograph or Risoprinting, even if it is another brand like Priport (Ricoh) or Duprinter (Duplo). Stencilprinting is a printing technique with virtually non-drying ink and therefore needs rough absorbing paper. The print -except for UV ink- is mat and will always rub off a bit, even after ‘drying’ for a while. The registration is not perfect and the ink coverage is not equal all over on the paper.

These inks are standard colours. These inks are hand-mixed and therefore rare and more expensive colours. U Seriprinter inks go in rebuilt Ricoh drums. It cures in UV-light. Seriprinter inks don’t print well on rough paper but are better on somewhat smoother paper or card stock. The white and varnish don’t cover as well as in silkscreen. Tone E=yellow, G=green, I=pink, K=black, N=brown, O=orange, P=purple, R=red, V=varnish, W=white. S and C Ri(s)o and Ri(c)oh are both twin-colour systems, so it is advised for 2 colours which go together to be all S or all C. 0-4 Higher numbers are darker colours
a. An example of a colour code is XRS3; a standard Red Riso mid dark colour or UW; a Seriprinter white. b. Not all colours are always available in a drum. Colours can vary when printed due to properties of the paper (dot gain) and ink or even the weather.
Paper and print size Riso We have 3 Riso machines with different specifications. Riso MZ1070E can print 290 x 410 mm*, on 50 to 270 grams with maximum paper size 320 x 840 mm (print size 290 x 800**), Riso V8000 300 x 428 mm*, on 80 to 240 gr. paper size 320 x 495 mm (300 x 475**) and Riso A2 595 x 424 mm*, on 50 to 170 gr. paper size 622 x 440 mm.
Ricoh 50 to 400 grams The maximum printing size is A3- (290 x 407 mm*). The printing size can be extended to 290 x 800 mm**. The maximum paper size is 320 x 840 mm. * Usually we require crop marks unless if it is a simple lay-out. Crop marks make the end size 10-15 mm smaller. ** To cover the extended length, sheets have to be printed twice. Seriprinter Seriprinter drums go in a Priport machine with an conveyor belt. Seriprint ink is not oil based but an UV-drying plastic ink. It doesn’t give off and is semi-glossy.
As extra features we have Print Goccos and a handstamp for stencils from the fifties. We also have old Roneo’s (for which we make our own ink), Rex Rotary and Gestetner stencilmachines. Masters (stencils) and ink from a Riso can be used on these machines. We have Roneo stencil cutters with colour filters. These are much more time consuming and will give unpredictable rough results and can be used for special projects. Pre-press is often very important. Knust handles pre-press, press and afterpress in commission or instructs a little for DIY.
