EXTREMADURA OLIVE OIL ROUTE 2030 Extremadura Sustainable Tourism Strategy

Experience Guide

General coordination: Extremadura Tourist Board Text and design: Extremadura Tourist Board 2023 Edition

Travelling around Extremadura´s Olive Oil Route, an incredible experience Evidence says that olive trees have been grown in Extremadura for 2,500 years. Native varieties of olives such as Manzanilla Cácereña, Morisca, Carrasqueña or Verdial from Badajoz and others such as Cornicabra, Arbequina, Cornezuela or Jabata are mixed in a symphony to produce an oil of excellent quality. We can find three Olive Oil Protected Denomination of Origin distributed throughout the territory of Extremadura: Gata – Hurdes and Villuercas – Ibores – Jara in the province of Cáceres and Monterrubio in the province of Badajoz. These Protected Denominations of Origin guarantee and ensure the delicacy of the products. In addition to this, we can also find nine territories of great importance for the quality of olive oil: Montánchez-Tamuja, La Siberia, Vegas Altas y Bajas del Guadiana, Comarca de Olivenza, Tierra de Barros, Zafra – Río Bodión, Tentudía and Campiña Sur. This gastronomic route invites you to discover Extremadura with the help of the Club de Producto Turístico made up of business offering different services, such as accommodation, restaurants, activities, museums, interpretation centres, specialised gastronomic businesses and oil mills, all of them willing to turn a gastronomic experience into an unforgettable memory. The world of olive growing offers us unique experiences to enjoy the knowledge and all the flavours inherited from centuries ago.

EXTREMADURA OLIVE OIL ROUTE

01 Via Oleum

Immerse yourself in the oil culture

What is it? In this experience you will discover the culture of the olive tree and extra virgin olive oil in a rural environment as a paramount part of our history and our way of life. This is basically what we call sustainable olive and olive grove tourism. The experience takes place in the town of Marchagaz. You will start with an oil tasting course, where you will learn to taste the olive oil, to get to know the positive and negative qualities of an olive oil as well as to enjoy its aromas and sensations. Afterwards, you will visit two oil mills, a traditional one and a modern one, where you will learn how the oil is extracted, its differences and coincidences over time.

Once the experience is finished, there will still be time to make a free visit to the historical and cultural heritage sites of the region, like Cáparra or Granadilla among others. By taking part in this experience, you will do your bit to maintain the Manzanilla Cacereña olive grove, to promote organic farming and sustainable production, as well as reversing the demographic trend of abandonment of rural areas. If you come and meet us, we will show you how everything is done.

Plasencia and Northern Extremadura

Finally, you will visit one of our authentic treasures, the organic olive grove in Oleosetin in which you will also get to see the livestock, the perfect example of the symbiosis between agriculture and livestock to make a traditional crop sustainable.

rudimentary ways of production which leaves us feeling surprised and delighted due to the lack of means and knowledge at the time.

Thanks to one of the best oil millers you will get to learn about the culture of extra virgin olive oil, its history and its roots in the villages located in northern Extremadura.

By taking part in this wonderful experience, you will do your bit to maintain the Manzanilla Cacereña olive grove, to promote organic farming and sustainable production, as well as reversing the demographic trend of abandonment of rural areas. If you come and meet us, we will show you how everything is done.

Whether used as a way to make a living, a source of food, a health or beauty product, olive oil is closely linked to our land, and without learning about its distinctive features it would be difficult to understand the way of life of the people in the region, which are often referred to as the olive tree offspring.
