The Workshop is a Demonstration Format to maximize the amount of information provided, so personal computers with working versions of Vectorworks are not required.

Fee for the Workshop is: $75.00 for CITT Members $100.00 for non-Members the Fee includes a Gourmet Boxed lunch on both days, plus coffee, juices and pop for breaks.

Murray Palmer

Murray Palm er has been self em ployed in Production Managem ent and Technical Direction in the Entertainm ent, Corporate and Civic Event m arkets for the past 22 years. 10 years ago he started with Calgary Opera on contract basis as TD for the m ain stage productions which evolved into a full tim e staff position 4 years ago. Murray first started with Cad drafting system s with a DOS based 2D program called Generic Cadd which later evolved into the W indows OS as Visual Cadd. As projects becam e m ore com plex, som e 3D capability was required and he m igrated to Vector works 8. He really dove into 3D drafting when he was awarded the contract to build the sets for the 2004 Aboriginal Achievem ent Awards.

The com plex patterns of circles, spheres, ellipses, rings, and colum ns dem anded the set be m odeled in 3D, so that intersections could be accurately calculated, discrepancies between the 2D paper drawings corrected, and “flattened” to create construction drawings. Since then he has continued developing skills in 3D drafting to create single drawings for projects that allow the sets to be viewed from any angle assisting the directors, stage m anagers and perform ers to see how the set will work. Also allowing the traditional plan and side views to be created, and finally to develop detailed construction drawings for the scenic construction team s.

Stephen Ross - Lighting Designer

Steve Ross has designed lighting for over 40 Canadian Opera Co. productions including The Barber of Seville, The Emperor of Atlantis, Luisa Miller, The Bartered Bride, La Bohème. His work has been seen on stages throughout North Am erica, at the opera com panies of Seattle, Boston, Houston, Dallas, Santa Fe, St. Louis, Palm Beach, Oklahom a, Kentucky, Chicago, New Orleans, Miam i, Montreal, Calgary, Ottawa, W innipeg, Edm onton, Vancouver and Orange County, California. Lighting designs for other productions include Canadian Stage Com pany’s The Threepenny Opera, Cabaret, Guys and Dolls, Toad of Toad Hall, Hedda Gabler, and Harry Chapin, Lies and Legends. He created the lighting design for the Mirvish production of Damn Yankees at the Royal Alexandra Theatre and co-lit both productions of Needfire. He also lit the production Shenandoah in Toronto and on Broadway. For Opera Pacific in California he designed the lighting for the W est Coast prem iere of Blitzstein's Regina. Steve, having never plotted

before, taught him self Vectorworks in the sum m er of 2001 with VW 8, which had just included a lighting com ponent. Once Version 9 arrived with Spotlight he started doing all of his drawings, from prelim inary to final plots, with the program . Currently using VW 2010 with third party add ons, light plotting and instrum ent data m anagem ent has becom e m ore efficient and accurate than ever before.

Marisa Magus

Marisa Magus is an associate at Red Lightning Productions in Calgary, AB. W hile prim arily a lighting and Production Managem ent based com pany, her events range from weddings, to concerts, to corporate functions, and even professional sporting events; with everything in between. W ith such a broad scope of event involvem ent and diversity, the clientele’s knowledge of the industry and it’s lingo varies significantly.

Her use of Vectorworks in this regard, also changes. W hile always an invaluable tool in establishing an accurate layout of the space to ensure the gear being used will actually fit into the venue it is going into, she also uses 3D isom etric wirefram es, and full renderings of the space to help the client visualize how the event will look before it even loads in. To a client who wouldn’t know the m ost basic difference between A Type and B Type truss, a picture, even a rough render, is worth a thousand words- and worth a thousand m ore to a designer who has the fram e of m ind to know that they are on the sam e page as their client days, even weeks in advance.
