It was in the early fifties, after we had settled down in California and Dick was busy developing the Kelty Pack, that I first backpacked. Although, excited by the prospect of visiting the High Sierra, mountains I'd seen only on calendars, I was dubious. Hike up and down mountains, carry my food and lodging on my back, sleep on the ground - on my vacation? But my fears were unfounded. The stunning beauty of pristine streams, azure lakes, and craggy rocks shaped like castles, the realization of how little equipment I needed to see it all, even the physical effort of hiking - it all gave me a sense of freedom and joy I'd never known before.
I owe debts of gratitude to many people... but most of all, I owe a big "Thank you!" to Dick, not only for introducing me to backpacking, but for the integrity and dedication to service he offered his customers. It was an honor to play a small part in his revolutionary impact on the modern backpack.

Dick Kelty made his first backpack in 1933, at age 14, to haul blankets and food for overnight hikes with his father in the Sierras.
As a young man, while overseas outfitting aircraft during WWII, he learned about durable, lightweight aviation materials—and an idea took root and grew. Upon his return to Glendale, California, Kelty set out to build a better pack: lighter, more comfortable, and BUILT FOR PLAY®. He spent nights meticulously handcrafting frames in his garage while his wife, Nena, lovingly sewed packs in the couple's tiny kitchen. That first year, 1952, they sold 29 packs—and an outdoor legend was born.
