Letters from the editor
D
ear Readers!
The April issue presents fresh impressions across the diverse fields of photography. Our editor and globetrotter Gerri McLaughlin, who in conversation with the Japanese street photographer Atsuya Harukawa again offers interesting insights into the Japanese street photography scene, will be the first step. Our columnist, John Hughes, explores the possibilities of using the “negative space” in photography and demonstrates this through impressive images. Alicja Reczek’s elfin, almost fairy-tale portraits are the prelude to our Photo Review series. Daniel Costonguay’s photos are characterized by fantastic contrasts and an interesting atmosphere. Eduardo Asenjo shows in his work the bustle and dynamism of street photography. Eduardo Mazzeo’s Photo Review captivates with atmospheric black and white shots. Elisa Tomaselli has developed her very own style of street photography. The pictures are full of dynamism and action. Usually very close to the action on street. We owe the cover picture of the April
issue to Katica Kapulica. Her work is both, conceptual and situational, as her street photos prove. Lorenzo Fasola has a fantastic sense of street photography, which he proves in this Photo Review. Omri Shomer gives us interesting insights into the street scene in Israel. His, as he calls them, “WTF (what the fuck) photos are interesting snapshots often with a high artistic touch. Peter Wang’s photos are street and surreal in one, often with a touch abstract. Ryosuke Takeoka is another street photographer from Japan. His high-contrast images are snapshots of the seething metropolis Tokyo. Our April issue is closed again with the selection of the so-called “EYE-Catching Moments” by our online editors from our Facebook group.
Enjoy reading!
Yours, Stefan Cimer Founder and Managing Editor

ecently I switched my focal length, I'm now using a 35mm focal length (Fujifilm 23mm F2 lens) and my photos are looking a little different. Before I go any further I want to make it clear that I will still be using my trusty 56mm, the 23mm lens is going to great when there is a lot of sunlight and I’m looking for negative space. What I have noticed in my photos when using the 23mm is all the negative space I end up with, so I’ve started to feel this negative space with the sky if it’s blue with just a few clouds or a building, I like the way this makes the people on the streets look bigger than the buildings and in some cases it makes them look small.
You will start to notice a lot of these photos from me over the coming year. I’m going to try and put just one person in these photos and leave a lot of space around them, I like the idea of putting people on the bottom of the photo, the photo below shows this:
Framing people this way makes the buildings look menacing and in a way it reminds me of the landscape photos of Ansel Adams, I loved the way he photographed the mountains using monochrome film with a red filter, this makes the blue in the sky turn black and in turn, it highlights, well the highlights.

In my photos I love the way the buildings and even the sky tower over the city and the people on the streets, this also allows me to showcase the architecture of the cities, this works really well when I’m in Cambridge or the old parts of London like Kings Cross and Kings Cross St Pancras or Borough market, both buildings have amazing roofs. REVIEW Alicja Reczek
Educated as an artist, musician, and educator. Out of passion and profession – photographer. Currently lives and works in Warsaw (Poland). Artistic sensitivity and oil painting, in particular, turned her permanently to photography. Her fans call her an enchantress or the White Alice due to the magical atmosphere which outstands from Alice’s style. These are extraordinary colors, fantastic modes of expression and intriguing ways of her models’ posing. The viewers of the White Alice tend to say she creates “fairytales for adults”. Her art urges to a reflection, meditation and to perceive the world with a different, magical eye. Her photos are mysterious and meaningful. Out of ugliness, she extracts beauty and the beauty in her hands is always original. Ones of Alice’s achievements are openings and events, for instance, the international exhibition in Germany. She also has got publications in Vogue Italy, COOPH, Arte Fotografica, EYE-Photo Magazine, EksMagazyn, Foto, Prime, Fotomaniak. She worked professionally as a photo editor and a press photographer. She is experienced in the workshop and photo-education and a member of a jury in photo competitions. More of her achievements are fashion, advertising and reporting photo sessions. She is also an author of photographs in a book, poetry tome, art shows and music CDs. In private, she loves valuable literature and a strong coffee. A Scorpio, symbolist, and precursor – with a temper and lots of contrasts. She used to walk her own ways. Once an individualist, another time emphatic, open and “tragically” romantic. A perverse quintessence of femininity.

REVIEW Daniel Costonguay My name is Daniel Castonguay from Montreal, Canada. I started photography in 1981. I was part of a youth association where I had access to a dark room. Self-taught, I consulted several books to learn to use an SLR camera as well as the technique of development in black and white. In writing these lines, I still remember the smell of the Kodak developer DK-50 in the lab. At this time I did not know yet that the art of photography would become a real passion. Not very talented in drawing, I was fascinated by the graphic arts such as painting, crayon and charcoal drawing. To fill this gap, I used the photo enlarger to create montages and give effects to my creations. Today, even using a computer, I still get the same feeling I had 35 years ago or the same thrill should I say, when working on a photo or compositing. I do not have a particular style of photography such as landscapes, portrait and so. I do shoot rather by intuition of the very moment. The essential being to create the emotion and a story in my work. For me, black and white is a visual language that accentuates the interpretation and the poetic aspect of an image. Some subjects are more adapted to the b&w and this allows to keep an aesthetic harmony. Black and white photography is an opportunity to express my personal vision. It tends toward the essential, has more of mystery, of poetry and has the power of abstraction.

REVIEW Eduardo Asenjo E
duardo Asenjo, born in 1990 Valdivia Chile I start with the love of photography a few years ago. A few months before my family and ex-girlfriend gave me my first camera started to study photography independently. I’m a self-thought photographer, always interested in urban photography, movement, blur, and sound. I wanted something different; to show the way I see the city. I have hearing problems and try to reflect this in my work. In order to be able to listen to somebody, I need to eliminate all the noise of other people and concentrate only on one voice. For this, I use the intentional movement of the camera and a long exposure. Many say that the camera does not do the photographer but I think it influences a lot when capturing an image, I walk all day with my camera, I never go out without it, it's part of me. I use a Fujifilm Xe2s mirrorless with a Fujinon 35mm f2 and an 8mm fisheye. It is a perfect camera to go unnoticed among people and to carry everywhere because it is light and compact. I could not do the same with a reflex of 2 kg since many of the photographs I take them moving from my bicycle. One of the themes that I constantly photograph is the relation of the urban, capturing the movement, flows both of the city and of the people who compose it at a specific time of action in relation to the displacement between both motives. I wanted something different, to show the way I see the city, that's why I continued to study independently. This is my first project and it is called "The sound of silence" exhibited in the art gallery Enebada, Vitoria Spain and in the Urbana Valdivia Gallery Chile, Exhibition and sale in Old-street gallery Ecuador, publication in Black Magazine November 2017, Exhibition in Espacio O art gallery Santiago Chile, publication in Eclectica magazine, Expo in Portal Valdivia, Chile.

REVIEW Eduardo mazzeo My name is Eduardo Mazzeo, architect and photographer, born in 1966. I am a restless person who enjoys capturing the images of everyday life, letting the sensitivity flow to find the compositions that show up when the light is appropriate. Architecture and photography are two passions which interact with and foster each other. The photographic records in buildings often help me resolve design and architecture-related issues. In turn, the construction site provides me with an endless source of photo essays. Also in 2016, I get the Second Mention in the "III Photography Contest of Art Deco Architecture and Rationalism" organized by AdbA Art Decรณ Argentina, with the photograph of "Palacio Rinaldi" (Building located in Montevideo, Uruguay). Photography exhibited in Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Miami (USA). In 2016 I edited the photo book "Monocromos". This book exhibits a photographic collection presented in five series of beautifully displayed images. The scent has been captured throughout many years of work and thousands of kilometers traveled in different means of transportation.

This is a journey about exploration. Sometimes work put me on the road and sometimes my curiosity to visit and interpret places, cities, towns, villages, roads and routes….Nature. How human race interacts with the environment, our relationship with nature, how we settle down in a territory… Understanding the logic of different villages or finding an explanation for the abandoned sites. Photographs on this book are purely spontaneous; no scenes have been set up. It is all about using sensitivity and educating our capacity to see, to be able to identify scenes or compositions that appear during a limited period of time responding to the light of the moment. The purpose of this book is to share sensations, to transmit lived moments through photography and stimulate the mind of our observers to generate a thought, reflection or just a simple stimulus The book was selected and exhibited at FELIFA 2016, Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 2017 I get a Mention in the "IV Photography Contest of Art Deco Architecture and Rationalism" organized by AdbA Art Decó Argentina.

REVIEW Eduardo mazzeo "Beside the water" The leitmotif of this series is the presence of water in nature. The natural scenery bordering rivers, streams, lakes or the ocean itself, have a special magic. A different light acts upon these mirrors depending on the weather. Sometimes the scenario is glossy and there are reflections; and some other times, there is a gloomy, grayish sky and a heavy atmosphere. The same scenario provides different compositions, depending on climatic factors and hours. Coastal elements are part of the composition; these can range from a tree to an old dock, one has to simply observe, interpret them, and make them play their role in the scene. To capture the circles or waves of a struggling insect which has fallen into the water, the curly surface shaped by the wind, or the magnificent shapes created by the clouds over the water and their reflections. The big waves crashing into rocks, jetting their white foam several meters high upon the beach, making you feel the ocean´s saltpeter in the air.
It is about taking time to enjoy the grace of fur seals, lots of them cooling in the water, others sunbathing on the rocks. Being able to listen, watch their movements‌ record.

INTERVIEW ELISA TOMASELLI
Elisa Tomaselli, born and grew up in a small town in central Italy, after graduated moved to London. Back in Italy, she has been living in Rome, a city full of history and energy. Dear Elisa, many thanks for finding time to give us this interview. Could you share with us, how you first became interested in street photography? Years ago, fascinated by visual arts, I signed up to a photography association. At that time there was an on-going project for members, which was about trams in Rome and I started spending many hours shooting in the street. Through this opportunity, I discovered my passion for photography and its power as a means of communication. What is it in your subjects that make you want to capture them? When I'm taking pictures in the streets, I try not to have prejudices, I'd rather let the photo come to me. You never know if and when you will find something intriguing to shoot, sometimes it could even be a fortunate stroke of serendipity. What I'm really hooked on are people's intimate moments of life and the experience that I have shooting them.
60 EYE-Photo Magazine, Issue #04, 2018
What would you say characterizes your work in comparison to other street photographers? I'm not used to comparing different kinds of work because I see photography as a universal and personal language and I feel everyone can utilize it to better express themselves. Your images are a vivid mixture of color and black and white. What is the crucial factor in your opinion to develop an image in black and white over color or vice versa? I used to shoot only in black and white, but after I had discovered the amazing work of Webb and Eggleston I realized how colors could have a great impact on a photo. Colour catches the eye, bright hues highlight subjects in an image, drawing a viewer in. On the other hand, black and white images appear to be more timeless. Although I know removing color from a picture helps the viewer to focus on subjects' emotional states, I favor the use of color when I believe it is a key element in the story that my photo is telling. I choose black and white when the light, form, or texture in the scene is more compelling than the hues of the subject matter.

INTERVIEW ELISA TOMASELLI Where do you get your inspiration? The works of great photographers such as Koudelka and Mary Ellen Mark have certainly been of great inspiration to me, but I also use social media as a source, and I go to photography associations to meet new talents. How much does your equipment help you to execute your artistic visions and what kind of equipment do you use /prefer? Since I started spending many hours shooting in the street I felt the need for light and fast focus equipment. So I bought a small camera, not very expensive, but really effective. It is a 28mm fixed lens, which is ideal for me because what I enjoy the most is being immersed in the scene. Moreover, using the same camera with one lens, allows me to think less about technical stuff and to feel the world around me deeply.
64 EYE-Photo Magazine, Issue #04, 2018
Have you ever been involved in arts in some other form than photography? I have always had a passion for drawing. When I was young I would spend many hours drawing, inspired by famous expressionist paintings, especially the works of Munch. Currently, I dedicate all my attention to photography, but pictorial art remains a great source of inspiration to me. Which advice would you give someone how is new in street photography or would like to improve her/his skills? I’d strongly suggest studying many books of photography, and of course, practicing a lot. You should also be aware that since there are ups and downs in photography, being perseverant is fundamental.

REVIEW katica kapulica In 1997 I graduated Fashion Design at the University of Zagreb, soon after I moved to Germany where I started working more on paintings. During this time my art was an integral part of various exhibitions and I had my own solo exhibitions. Through the years, my interest in photography grew. Four years ago I bought my first camera and I started to explore the world around me. I realized that when I use my camera, I give more attention to details, my surrounding and the people around me. In 2015 I started to attend a photography school in Zagreb - Fotonaut, where I met my mentor Mr. Tiljak. After finishing my education I worked closely with the founders of Fotonaut and I am one of the participants of the Fotonaut workshops.

y name is Lorenzo Fasola and I was born in 1971 in Saronno where I live. I attended the Superior Art School of Castello Sforzesco in Milan. I play musical instruments and paint, but only since 2013 I focus myself only on photography, with particular attention to “Street Photography”, but also to artistic and creative photography. What never changed on this new trip is my need to explore. The research is the petrol for walk miles through unknown roads. I look for the curiosity of the people and particular situations. I look for forgotten spaces, architectures and for meeting humans and dogs. In each of my image, I try to tell my vision about the world around me and a story, perhaps also mine. The camera diaphragm opens and closes following my breath. I’m part of the ISP Italian Street Photography Project as an author since 2016.

REVIEW Omri Shomer O
mri Shomer, 34, Street photographer.
I’m married to Tamar and father to Noam, my young daughter. we live in a city called Ramat Ha’Sharon, located in the central district of Israel. I’m originally from a moshav, which is a type of cooperative settlement we have here in Israel. I’ve been working in the advertising industry for seven years. I’ve been a photographer since age around 13. It all began when my father bought an 8mm camera and since then I never stopped documenting my surroundings, whether it was through filming videos or making stylus pictures. Over the past ten years, I began taking pictures with more selfawareness and thus adding creative concepts and ideas to my photographs. I think that the moment when I realized that I’m doing something big through my photography was the moment when I managed to transcend reality as we know it, isolating situations and telling my own story. I think that the photos that are dearest to my heart are those that succeed in eliciting an immediate reaction by those who see it, whether it be laughter, wonder, a debate of some sort, etc. Usually, these are the photos that play tricks on the mind and challenge reality. I call it “What the fuck” (WTF) photos. Right now I’m working on projects for magazines and I’m a lecturer from a new niche in Israel: Street photographing for creative people. I believe that street photography can enhance the potential of every creative person, including people who think for a living.

REVIEW peter wa n g I
’m a photography lover, from Taipei Taiwan. Starting from 2012, I became addicted to photography, mainly concentrated on panorama from the very beginning. Once for a while, I would take a trip island wide, to capture sceneries, and further, explore their diversified views in different seasons. Afterward, I observed and learned from the masterpieces by various photographers, I tried to spread out the scope to every corner of the lanes and streets I feel fascinating and with stylish features. I would outline the stories from angle to angle and building to building, or even utilize a variety of color, light, shade, line, and shape… to touch and move people’s hearts. Imagination is a tremendous asset to everyone. It always strengthens me to face the difficulties, depressions or sorrows of the Real World. Of course, it keeps my heart young, and by means of it, I would keep creating more work to the World too!

NO RULES S TREET PHOTOGRAPHY Street photography must not be subject to any rules; at least that is the opinion of dynamic street photographer and Facebook photo group “no rules street photography founder John Hughes. Together with a few photo enthusiasts, the award-winning photographer founded the photography group, always in search of the ultimate street capture. From now on, the weekly nominated photos will appear as a small retrospective in our magazine, because, like John Hughes, we likewise are interested in tracing the trends and spirit of street photography.

eye Catching - Moments
Our Facebook photo group admins and online editors, Helena COSTA, Mona Rehmers (Mona Mour), Thomas FĂœNGERLINGS and Markus Brandstetter, did their best to compile an interesting, albeit difficult collection of unique, remarkable and fantastic photos. We call them the "EYE Catching Moments". With great pride and joy, we present these images here, selected in March 2018.
EYE-Photo Magazine always strive to provide you with a lively cross-section of the different photo styles. The photographs were selected from our Facebook photo group, a group of more than 14,000 members and photographers sharing hundreds of fantastic pictures every day.
