Letters from the editor
D
ear Readers!
In our March issue, we building again bridges between the different photographic genres. From the Japanese street photography to the surrealist-inspired photos of Alan King, between melancholic monochrome portraits of Alphagamma Nantes to the lively and contrasting street photos of Batsceba Hardy, between high-contrast monochrome pictures of a Dimitris Lambris paneling to beautiful, dreamy portraits of G. Buer, to great graphical abstract street photos of Heudoyer Eric to lively, bright and dreamy images of Jonathan Eden Drummond, to scenic landscape shots of José Canelas, to high-contrast black and white Street Photos by Mário Pereira,up to dreamy long exposure land- and cityscapes by Michael Köster. Our collaboration with No Rules Street Photography, the Facebook group brings us a nice selection of their February submissions. The EYE-Catching Moment se-
lection again represents an interesting cross-section of our Facebook photo group. The issue is rounded off with an interesting article by our columnist John Hughes. He was on a discovery and reports about his experiences with Fuji’s new X-E3. Finally, we like to welcome our new online editors Mona Rehmers (aka Mona Mour) and Wolfgang Brandstetter, reinforce our Facebook team by now. As always at this point I wish you happy reading!
Yours, Stefan Cimer Founder and Managing Editor

Hi Hiroki , firstly I would like to thank you for taking time out to talk to us today I know you are keeping busy in your photography community in Tokyo. 弘樹さん この度はお忙しい中「EYE PHOTO MAGAZINE のインタビューに快く答えて下さりありがとうございます。 Please can you tell us a little about yourself to start with. まずは簡単な自己紹介をお願いします。 藤谷 弘樹 1964 年 生 神奈川県出身 埼玉県在住 2008 年 から写真を始めまし た。 My name is Hiroki Fujitani, born in Kanagawa, living in Saitama. At first, I only took pictures of landscapes to learn how to use my camera and techniques but slowly I got interested in human emotions and now I only take pictures of people.
Hiroki you shoot in both colour and black and white, do you have a preference or is it a shot by shot process ?
I prefer black and white basically, but I also take colour pictures to be aware of colours and to develop my senses.
There’s a very strong sense of “being right there with you on the streets” in yourwork, how is it as a photographer on the streets of Tokyo these days? 弘樹さんの写真をみていると 「ストリートにいる」 という強い感覚を覚えます。 近頃では、写真家として東京の街にでるのはどんな感じですか?

I see you shoot in many areas of Tokyo has Tokyo changed much since you first starting shooting there? When I see the pictures I took 6 months ago, I notice that some buildings have disappeared and new buildings are being made and that changes the light in the city. Tokyo changes really quick. There are some up close and personal photos in your gallery where your subjects are looking straight into the camera. How much do you interact with your subjects and what kind of reactions do you get? Usually I shoot candidly but not in a high-handed manner so I can catch a subject without being noticed. If noticed, I nod and show them my respect.

es I know I said I was going to stop playing around with other cameras and lenses, but I just couldn’t help myself. I was watching Ted Forbes latest video (Art of photography) on YouTube reviewing the X-E3 and I thought I would love to try that so, I sent email to Fujifilm UK and asked if there was any way I could get the X-E3 for a few weeks to try and review.
I got the camera a few days later at 8am and by 9am I knew it was the perfect camera for me, it felt amazing and comfortable to hold. The X-E3 weights nothing; it’s really light in fact the 23mm F2 feels like it weighs more than the camera.
22
EYE-Photo Magazine, Issue #03, 2018
But, how would the camera perform on the streets, in a word awesome and in another word amazing. Not really sure where to start here, so let’s start with the best thing for a street photographer: Nobody notices the camera, its more stealth than a stealth fighter and I was using the silver version. I feel this makes it the perfect camera for the streets. It didn’t matter how close I got, in some cases, I was putting the camera right into people’s faces and they just didn’t notice.

FUJIFILM FUJIFILM X-E3 & 23mm F2 by John Hughes
The EVF is smaller than my X-T2, however this didn’t bother me. It was still clear and easy to use and is great for looking at the photos I’ve taken. I even though the rubber around the viewfinder would be a problem as I wear glasses, but nope it was fine.
24
EYE-Photo Magazine, Issue #03, 2018
The back screen is a good size and I know its the same size as my X-T2, but it just looks bigger. I also love that Fujifilm removed the D-pad from the back. This is one of the reasons (for me) that camera feels so comfortable in my hand. I’m not 100% sure why Fujifilm kept the D-pad on the X100F and X-Pro 2. The X-E3 also has a touchscreen and when I first heard about this all I could think was, “why would someone use that?” Let me answer that here and now, its great fun, that’s why. I like the idea that I can be sat in front of someone and have the ability to snap a photo without them noticing, like the photo below:

The touchscreen is also great for changing the ISO, film simulation, white balance etc. and it works really well. I hope Fujifilm put this on all future X cameras. Now my only real complaint about the camera, why isn’t it weather sealed? I never understood why they didn’t weather seal the X100F, both of these cameras are made for street shooters and like most, I like to shoot in all weathers. So for me and I imagine other street shooters this is a mistake, but it’s a small one.
26
EYE-Photo Magazine, Issue #03, 2018
Anyway, I loved the camera so much I was going to buy one, that’s right, after 2 days using the X-E3 I sent my X-T2 and 56mm lens to MPB to sell, however, I went to London to photograph the Chinese New Year and I found myself missing the tilt screen. I might write a blog about that trip, anyway I came home and cancelled my X-E3 and instead I went for the X-T20 and only time will tell if I’ve made the right move. As for the X-E3, Fuji have done amazing job, it’s a great camera just a pity it doesn’t have a tilt screen.

REVIEW ALAN KING I
was born in Greenwich, South East London, in February 1952. At the age of seven or eight, I was already experimenting with photography first using my Father's box camera and later with my own trusty Kodak Brownie 127. In 1963 I joined ELTHAM GREEN SCHOOL where I majored in Art and English. I was lucky enough to have Art masters who, although educating the disciplines of Art, allowed students to develop their own styles. It was here that I was introduced to the groundbreaking surreal photography of Herbert Bayer, Man Ray and Angus McBean, and studied the Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright.
“
Known more for his Massurreal and optical illusion Artwork Alan King’s traditional photographic work coupled with his vibrant and vividly surreal imagery, bridges the gap between traditional and New Media techniques Leaving school in 1968 with just "A" Level Art and English I pursued a career in commercial Art with an Advertising agency in London's West End but left after about a year and for a short time worked for a firm of Sign writers and exhibition photographers. My current style of photographic artwork only really developed in 1999 when I decided to experiment with combining photography with my geometric illusionary Art style with the aid of computer software. My contemporary surreal style was soon recognised and I was invited to join the Massurrealists group in 2004.

REVIEW ALPHAGAMMA NANTES I
am a 39 year old autodidact photographer with a passion for travels and unusual encounters. My curiosity has taken me to Western Africa and Maghreb, Southern America, Asia and Europe, where I have been able to catch in an instant, emotions, moments and situations. In 2012, when I learned I suffered from a serious disease, I turned to photography to express all the daily enrichment of this difficult experience. Only when we miss something do we become aware of its value. How do time, patience, will, experience influence our vision of the world that surrounds us?
“
We do not see the world as it is we see the world as we are
(Anais Nin)
As such, unemployed time and physical impairment become lust for liberty, movement, curiosity. Meeting and sharing with people, reflecting, contemplating the buzz of our cultures with neutrality, independence and enthusiasm are my new passions; the richness of Man, cultural diversity, emotions, nature, contrasts and the imaginary my major source of inspiration for photography. REVIEW B AT S C E B A H A R D Y Batsceba Hardy, I like to define myself as an artist of the Irreality, who lives and will only live ‘in’ the net, where I leave a mark with my constant performance: writing stories in images and telling visions in words. What remains is superfluous, to put it like Wittgenstein, including my secret background. I don’t think I’m essentially a street photographer. I guess Photography is just the way for me to express how I see things. It has something to do with a philosophical approach to reality. I have always had this way of observing reality, dwelling on details, on scenes that tell me something. Early on in my life, I felt inspired by what was around me. Eventually, I got into street photography. It was a slow process. And this happened in a city that was not my hometown, Berlin, where my view got released from all the parameters and preconceptions that you naturally develop in known places. What I perceived in that new urban landscape and became the ghost I kept freezing everywhere and in everyone’s face with my shots was an intense feeling of loneliness. As a photographer, I am already used to entering the world of loneliness because I must be able to become invisible.
48
EYE-Photo Magazine, Issue #03, 2018
So I found myself breathing in my own loneliness and the solitude of those around me. It is the distance between the photographer and the rest of the people that allows the photographer to notice what is overlooked and under-loved. I found this particular statement that confirms my thoughts: "...if love belongs to the poet, and fear to the novelist, then loneliness belongs to the photographer. To be a photographer is to willingly enter the world of the lonely because it is an artistic exercise in invisibility." - Hanya Yanagihara, Loneliness Belongs to the Photographer, The New Yorker. REVIEW DIMITRIS LABRIS I
am a self-taught photographer who began taking photos mainly as a way of expressing my feelings. I find it crucial for everyone to express their feelings by creating thus, making art.
Expression is communication. Communication is art. I always let my feelings take over, whether I am taking a photo or editing one. In 2017 I finished my long-term project "Structures" which I then self-published in a 36-pages book: It is a series of diptychs portraying the connection between physical and technical structures, faces and landscapes, bodies and cityscapes. The series came to be from the need to understand the reason I was shooting and editing both living and non-living subjects in the exact same way. Up until now, “Structures has been shortlisted for the Royal Photographic Society International Photography Exhibition 160 and received an honorable mention at the MonoVisions Photography Awards 2017.

REVIEW G. BUER All Model Shots: Gülþen BUER (My Mother) Model & Edit & Shots (stocks): Güliz BUER (Me) My mom & I, we are a team named "G.BUER" (Gülþen & Güliz BUER) We are known as photograph lovers as G.BUER Copyright belong to me and my mother as a G.BUER We are hobbyist photographer. We love beach photography. And we are having fun. My mom does not know how to use camera. But she is shotting nice photos!
Who are we: We are G. BUER. We started taking pictures with my father's Lubitel 2 camera. My mom does not know exactly how to use the camera. She is learning. My mom's timing and framing are very good. When I'm modeling, I usually do not stand still and posing. Run like a little girl, from there to there. I can not imagine posing for someone else. My mom takes pictures just the way I want. We live on the Mediterranean coast. Antalya My mother is taking my photographs on the Mediterranean coast. My mum uses a Canon 550 D camera for its light weight. We prefer the golden hour as time and the months of October, November and December. We prefer autumn months because there are many tourists on the beach during the summer months. And in summer, the sun goes down on land. In the autumn months, there are few tourists and the sun goes down from the sea.

EYE-Photo Magazine, Issue #03, 2018
Although it is difficult to take photos in the cold of December by wearing summer clothes, the sea, the sun and the beach are very good for taking pictures. But it's a little hard to convince my mother to go to the photo shoot in this cold. We walk down to the beach with a small suitcase full of clothes. We go back home by filling 3 memory cards of 8 GB. My mother and I have almost 1 TB hard drive photos arranged and waiting to be published. I shoot ships, boats, cats, dogs, pigeons, seagulls, sky, sea photos. I stock these photos. And I add to the photos my mother took. I use Photoshop CC to edit photos. First I edit in Raw format. While I'm editing my photos, I like to make the beach sand straight. It looks like there's no footprint. I do not like footprints on the beach or car tracks. I feel like I've got a corner from heaven and I'm going straight to the beach sand like I come first. Around the photo recognition: We are generally known in Russia, South Korea, China, Brazil. onathan Eden Drummond is a street and an art photographer, as well as novelist. He was born in New York, raised in Mexico, went to university in France and now lives in Belgium.
From a very early age he was influenced by art in all its forms. He grew up in Mexico City surrounded by well-known painters, photographers, intellectuals and authors, including the great surrealists, Remedios Varo and Leonora Carrington. Remedios Varo, inparticular, exerted a strong and lasting influence on his vision of art. As a child he also met Robert Capa’s great teenage love, the Hungarian photographer, Kati Horna, who introduced him to photography as an art. In the late 60s and 70s he was particularly influenced by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Ernst Haas and Marie Cosindas. He currently feels a particular affinity with Saul Leiter, in spite of their work being very different. Jonathan Eden-Drummond only decided to go professional in 2013, at the insistence, and with the encouragement, of a small group of supporters.

REVIEW JOSÉ CANELAS M
y name is José Henrique Pereira Canelas, known by "Canelas", I was born on September 11, 1971, in Évora.
Photography is a hobby that allows me to discover and capture the world, Portugal is my country. I am passionate about natural landscape photography, river water, sea, color, light of the sunrise or at the end of the day, sunset, are my sources of inspiration. I do not look for anything in this hobby, but there have been great surprises, invitations to participate in national and international exhibitions, paper or online magazines, awards in contests, sponsorships!!! I repeat, a great surprise! Believe ... !!! For the magazine Eye-Photo Magazine I will divide my photos by two countries, Portugal and Iceland! Photos of Portugal Portugal is the most western country in continental Europe. Bathed by the Atlantic Ocean, its coastline is unique. The light is simply phenomenal ... as you can confirm by the photographs that I will present. Photos of Iceland From an extraordinary landscape, beautiful and unique. Every detail is magical! Waterfalls, aurora borealis, mountains of unbelievable colors, black sand beaches in contrast to the ice. This is nature at its best! A paradise for photographers and for those who truly love nature.

“
We always look, but we see just when we want…
I cannot describe myself as a photographer. I am rather an observer of human nature during my daily routine, mainly on my way to work. I have always been fascinated by people and their capability to create, to live and to survive in the most diverse conditions. The urban environment in which I live is the most unequivocal example of the transforming capacity of the human being, adapting Nature and adapting himself to the transformations that he created and imposed. It is a reality that can be hard and ruthless, lonely and grey. But it can be an equally motivating reality and an example to follow, when we are surprised by something we did not count with - because the Good and the Beautiful exist, so we want to see them.
106 EYE-Photo Magazine, Issue #03, 2018
This philosophical approach to my urban existence found in photography its natural materialization. With black and white, I focus my attention on the essential, without distractions. With photography I capture stories and significant moments, revealing the Humanity that exists in us and that deserves to be contemplated with pleasure or internalized for our improvement as human beings. I try to see instead of just looking and that forces me to abstract from mere daily existence and to observe Life as it is. Life is there, we just do not see it when we are submerged in the foam of days.

REVIEW MICHAEL KÖSTER A
rchitecture and lines are the key elements of Michael Köster´s photography. Michael was born 1960 in Berlin, Germany, where he still lives today.
As a photographer he takes his time focussing on details putting them in the centre of his works. He creates new perception through unusual perspectives. It is a challenge to see what is special within the urban every day life and catching these elements on photo. For the artist this is not about a specific statement but about depicting the architecture and its special features the way he perceives them. It is the aim to lead the eye of the viewer to the bare essentials and to create an aesthetic composition; people are an integral part of this work. Black and white photography takes a big space in Michael´s works but sometimes he also produces colored photographs.
“
Black and white photography is the best way for me to realize a vision digitally as I imagine it
Michael has been exhibiting regularly in groups as well as in solo exhibitions since 2013. The first photo edition with the title “Monochrome City” will be published in the middle of February 2018 in cooperation with the Berlin Gallery Carpentier. The edition contains 50 black and white fotos as a survey of the last 5 years.

NO RULES S TREET PHOTOGRAPHY Street photography must not be subject to any rules; at least that is the opinion of dynamic street photographer and Facebook photo group “no rules street photography founder John Hughes. Together with a few photo enthusiasts, the award-winning photographer founded the photography group, always in search of the ultimate street capture. From now on, the weekly nominated photos will appear as a small retrospective in our magazine, because, like John Hughes, we likewise are interested in tracing the trends and spirit of street photography.
