the Editor Dear Friends and Readers! In my imagination there is no way that creativity ever ends. This and some other major aspects led me to the idea to create a special edition, an offshoot of EYE-Photo Magazine, fully and only dedicated to fine art photography. When we look back at the history of photography we must immediately conclude that not all photography is fine art. The earliest photographs were really just experiments. Some photographs are documentation of historical events, important meetings, and snapshots of children, pets and trips to the Grand Canyon or Niagara Falls. Photography as an actual art form, to do more than merely preserve visual memories, therefore needs to be well defined.
In much the same way that photojournalism must be created by a journalist who carries a camera, a photography artist therefore must be an artist who happens to use a camera. Often the photography artist uses other mediums as well, frequently painting. They might make a living to pay their bills as a commercial photography or a wedding photography, but their artistic photography is their first passion. Fine Art Photography has no universal definition, but we can clearly point to artworks which are meant to be artworks and not meant for any other purposes. Whether we call it art photography, artistic photography or fine art photography makes no difference. Its art for the sake of art. Fine art photography is a confusing mixture too. Everything from landscapes to nudes to provocative storytelling. It differs from landscape snapshots, pornography and the crude photography of amateurs just having fun with their camera. The artist pays careful attention to composition, the focus, the quality of the lighting, the poses of figures in the photograph and even during the editing process where the artist has hundreds of photos and only a few which they choose to promote as „art“. The artist is looking for those perfect photos where everything came together to create something unique. The end result of fine art photography is very different too. The goal isn‘t a magazine layout or a scrapbook (although the photography may be reproduced that way), the goal is frequently to be shown in art galleries, as wall decor in someone‘s living room or dining room or office, and then be appreciated by visitors to the gallery or the owner‘s home. Often the photographs will be blown up to a larger size so that people can see the details and the quality of the print will be superior to normal photography printmaking processes (often done by a professional in a dark room). Scholarly debate of what makes fine art photography aside we can look back at the history of photography and see examples of what makes good art and why that art is different from mere snapshots. With this in mind, enjoy reading! Stefan Cimer (Founder and Editor in Chief)

Piotr BIENIASZ

Piotr Bieniasz, a self-taught photographer, was born in Trzebiatow, a small town, well-hidden in North-Western Poland. In 2010 he relocated to Ireland and has settled in Galway, where he has since been cultivating his interest in the arts, particularly in photography. His big adventure and strong passion for photography started 4 years ago when he would still rather assist than take photos at the miscellaneous photo shoots. Hairdresser by profession he would assist at creating the most amazing and daring hairstyles. He was able to observe other photographers at work, and undeniably that was love at first sight. At the beginning, Piotr would mostly focus on exploring the possibility of his very first camera, Nikon D7k. He would take photos of everything and everyone, taking advantage of natural light only. Later on, he got into self-portraits as he felt he could take control over his shots completely. With time, however, he discovered the power of studio lighting and a full-frame camera, Nikon D800. He is mostly keen on portraits and fine art photography; however his portfolio is full of different images, from fashion to more experimental and artistic shots. He puts a lot of effort into his post-process as he himself admits it constitutes for at least 50% of the success of the final outcome. The other 50% goes to of course taking a good and satisfying photo. The post-process itself is strictly dependent on Piotr’s state of mind. Most of his works are dark, making use of the colours consistently and adding different textures to give the images more surreal and painterly look. A lot of his finearts are collages of many photos and the work on them usually takes from 8 hours to a few days. It happens that the whole idea behind the photo takes its shape only during the photoshoot or the post-process – nevertheless, one can easily notice there is definitely much thought put into every single image of Piotr. He is constantly looking for new ways to express himself visually and can discover new inspiration in the simplest forms or objects. He says his inspiration may stem from different people he comes across in his life, old clothing, simple objects, breath-taking and mystical locations, the smell of old furniture, and primarily from the great artists, such Brooke Shaden, Alex Stoddard, Miss Aniela and Lara Jade. His primary interest is in storytelling. Piotr explains he takes photos that require the full attention from the audience. With his photos he is twisting reality and makes people ask questions, such as why? and how? He does not differentiate between reality and fantasy and makes these two opposite worlds mix freely and merge to the surprise of the audience and sometimes the creator himself as he produces surreal and somewhat dreamlike images. He claims he is still in search for his own unique style that allows him for experimenting with miscellaneous photo editing techniques. Nevertheless, one may be tempted to say he has already found one during his trips to the wild and bare landscapes of Ireland that, as Peter describes himself, have left him feeling excited and curious as to how the sheer beauty of this country can be expressed and captured through his lens. He has developed and mastered his own unique style of photography around this urge and once can easily see his passion for this wonderful art form in Piotr’s work. Each image portrays a personal narrative that is extracted through a process of “point and shoot” imagery and meticulous post production editing. Piotr strives for an idealised perfection in all of his artwork and at times this might cause a conflict which has to be worked through in the image and resolved or simply accepted along with its perceived flaws. In 2014 Piotr had his first photography exhibition: ‘Once Upon a Dream’ that has proven a huge local success and brought him even more recognition in the world of arts that his new home town, Galway thrives on. Consequently, in 2015 Piotr’s image was used on the poster for the local Theatre Festival.
