How did you get into street photography?

A

I always liked the look of DSLR cameras and about 3 years ago bought one, booked a weekend workshop with the Guardian newspaper in London. I was immediately attracted to photographs of people above all else and then discovered street photography through Facebook.

What is it in your subjects that make you want to capture them?

A

My favorite thing is humor but I try to take as wide a range of shots as possible. That way there is always something going on of interest on the streets.

Q Q Q

Your photos are a vivid mix between color and b&w. What do you think about color in comparison to b&w in street photography?

A

I prefer color myself and think I am better with color than b and w. I love other people‘s black and whites though.

What equipment do you prefer to use and why?

A

I switch between Sony A7s with Voigtlander 15mm and Olympus pen f with 12-40 pro lens. The Sony is great close in and works well in poor light. The Oly has nice colors and is good with slow shutter. The small zoom gives me extra reach where I need it. They are both relatively small and unobtrusive.

What would you tell a newcomer who asks for your advice on how to start?

A

Smile a lot and get some very comfortable shoes don’t be scared, nobody I know ever got hit for taking a photograph and don’t spend too much money on kit you don’t need ( like I did) :).

Philip, thank you very much for taking the time for this quick Q&A! 11
