WE Adopt a Pet Our Shelter Spotlight is Max, a 6 year old Labrador/Hound mix. Max’s owner was unable to care for him, but told the shelter he was house trained. Max is a very friendly, gentle, easy-going, and lovable guy. He adores everyone and enjoys going for walks. Max came to the shelter with another dog, but hasn’t gotten along with dogs at the shelter. He doesn’t seem to mind the office cats. Kennel life is hard on Max, and he really needs a home. Max will make a wonderful family addition! Max’s adoption fee is $100.00 and this includes first shots, worming, and sterilization. Anyone interested in adopting Ben, please go to heberspringshumanesociety.com and complete an adoption application. A volunteer will contact you to set up a meet and greet appointment. Also, we have Domino, a handsome 1 year old DSH cat. This fur baby is a three-legged champ! Animal control brought Domino to the shelter in horrible condition with a mangled leg and tail possibly from an animal attack. Luckily with great vet and shelter care this baby pulled through a difficult surgery and hasn’t slowed down since his recovery. He loves to run around the office, explore new places, and play with other cats. Right now he isn’t a cuddle bug, but the volunteers are working with him every day to become more cuddly. Domino’s adoption fee is $60.00 and this includes first shots, worming, and sterilization. Anyone interested in adopting Domino, please go to heberspringshumanesociety.com and complete an adoption application. A volunteer will contact you to set up a meet and greet appointment.

editors note Yo Ho Ho
Yo Ho Ho and a bottle of rum! No, that’s not right... although some of you may be wishing for some of grandma’s spiced rum cake for Christmas. I’m astonished at how quickly a year can pass. It seems like only a few short weeks ago I was celebrating my oldest grandson’s 9th birthday only to realize that his 10th is looming on the not too distant horizon. Time is a funny thing creeping by at a tortoise pace when we are children and racing past like the hare as we get older. Oh, well enough of that. Gina and I would like to express our gratitude for the warmth with which the Heber Springs community welcomed us this year. We arrived in August unsure of what the future would hold. You, my dear reader, are now holding that future. December marks our 4th issue of Water’s Edge and we could not be happier. We are excited to embrace the coming new year and share more stories, more neighbors, more students, more life in and around Heber Springs with you here between the Covers of Water’s Edge. May you have a blessed Christmas celebrating with family and friends and may your New Year be filled with great joy and prosperity. HO Ho Ho Merry Christmas to all and to all a good read! - Kimberlee Thomas

When women support each other, incredible things happen! Studies show that women who support women are more successful in business. “Every woman’s success should be an inspiration to another. We’re strongest when we cheer each other on.” - Serena Williams The journey of being a woman is at times a difficult one, we face obstacles and age old boundaries that challenge us daily. With each passing decade women manifest new dreams and inspire a new generation to push through toward new opportunities. This article is about a local woman, Lawrie Music, who continues to choose to be a beacon of encouragement not just for women but all of the people she touches through volunteering in the Cleburne Co. Community, fundraising for Single Parent Scholarship Foundation, as well as, putting on workshops for them, judging pageants around the state, and recently competing in and earning the title of this year’s National United States Woman of Achievement (WOA). Water’s Edge - Tell us about you; • How long have you lived in the Heber Springs/ Cleburne County area? •. Family (children etc.) •. Your involvement in the community. (Clubs, Churches or Organizations) Lawrie Music I have lived in Heber Springs for 23 years now. Abbott Labs moved me down here from Chicago. I have had 3 jobs since then all in the same Industry. I have been in the Animal Feed industry for over 30 years, and I hold a patent in binding Aflatoxin. I was married to Bill Music for 28 years, he died unexpectedly in March. (NOT from Covid) We have 3 Girls; Kelly, Kailtyn and Stephanie. I have 6 grandchildren. In years past I directed 4 pageants a year, but since my husband passed I only direct 2 pageants a year. I am a volunteer for the Single Parent Scholarship Fund of Cleburne County now for 4 years, directing the fundraising pageant held every first weekend of August in Spring Park. I am a member of the CCRW (Cleburne County Republican Woman) and help with the scholarship program. I have been a member of the Ozark Trail Festival for 6 years now and a Rotary member for about 6 months. I have directed the Ozark Trail Pageant for 6 years now. All of my Pageants are and have been fund raising pageants. Starting in 2004 I was a Girl Scout Leader for my middle daughter Kaitlyn in Heber for 7 wonderful years. I have attended Prevailing Word Church for 21 years now and they are my extended family. W.E. - How/When did you begin competing in Pageants? 8 Heber Spring’s Social and Community Magazine

Lawrie Music I started to compete in pageants in 2010, my daughter Kaitlyn and Carie Golden talked me into doing the Arkansas International Pageant. My daughter Kaitlyn started pageants in 2008. I had no idea what I was getting into. But I absolutely loved meeting the other contestants and finding out what their platforms were and what they were doing for their community. These women I have met throughout the years are still friends on facebook. This sisterhood is so supportive. W.E. - Tell us about WOA? Lawrie Music The Woman of Achievement Leadership Pageant consists of networking with other successful women throughout the United States: from volunteers, speakers, spokespersons, moms, students, community leaders, authors, women with a message, women on a mission, in management, or entrepreneurs. The Leadership Weekend includes attending informative workshops, a personal interview with the judges, your Platform Display & Creative Expression (a non-media talent, a creative expression performance including art or film, or instrumental, vocal or dance OR present a speech). Finally, an Active Wear and Evening Wear Portion for Finals. Woman of Achievement is a great opportunity to meet other dynamic women from throughout the nation and display your platform focus to various community members and influencers who will be on the platform judging panel. A table is provided to each state & regional finalist to showcase her platform throughout the event! (A “platform” can be an organization you volunteer for, a non-profit idea or a hot topic for women in the U.S. at the present time) The judging is as follows: 25% PERSONAL INTERVIEW 25% PLATFORM INTERVIEW (Your chosen focus to present during Nationals) 20% CREATIVE EXPRESSION (Performing Arts, Visual Media, or Speech) 15% EVENING GOWN 15% LIFESTYLE in FITNESS (Aerobic, Active Wear or Swimwear) I got involved in WOA when I was talking with a friend of mine who also does pageants. I had finished my reign as Arkansas State Fair Mrs. Queen and my friend referred me to the pageant to represent Arkansas. I had an interview over the phone with the director Marlena Martin. After I give up my title I will at some point in a few years compete for the State Fair Sr. Ms. title. - Gina Slagley

Special Santa Mission Imagine you are snuggled down deep in your warm bed, eyes heavy with sleep when suddenly you remember it’s Christmas! You fly out of bed and race to the tree to find brightly wrapped packages that had not been there when you went to bed the night before. Ahhh, yes Christmas morning there is nothing finer as a child. Layne Tubbs remembers his childhood Christmases with one particular year standing out more than the rest, “It was the year Santa left his footprints on the carpet by the fireplace and brought me the electric football game I had asked for. It was the Super Bowl version with the Jets & the Colts. My brother got a drum set & the family got a new color TV. That was a huge year!” Christmas has remained Layne’s favorite time of the year since his early childhood days. “With all the family traditions and the joy of the season, who doesn’t love Christmas?” Layne mused during our interview. So with all that love for the holiday busting at his seams it just makes sense that Santa would call upon him for a very special mission. Each year around the end of November and into early December Santa has to take the reindeer out for a couple of annual test flights. You see, they get a tad bit rusty after 364 days of just hanging out playing reindeer games. This also gives Santa a few days away from the North Pole to relax from all his list checking. In 2013 Santa decided it was about time to change things up a bit and began looking for a new place to take the reindeer for their test flights. While talking it over with Mrs. Claus he recalled the spectacular view of Greers Ferry Lake and how much he loved the charming community of Heber Springs. Santa sent two elves that had recently retired from their Elf on the Shelf tours to scope out the community and find a home where Santa could stay while in town. Guess whose home they found? Layne Tubbs, that’s who! Oh, I forgot to mention that in order for Santa to stay in a home there has to be a gentleman that lives there that looks just like him! Why you may ask? So Santa can come and go without anyone suspecting that it is really him; which is super important when you’re on vacation and just want to enjoy a burger or a Peppermint Mocha frappe at the Jitterbug Coffee shop. Layne couldn’t believe his luck when Santa called to ask his permission to stay in his home while in town. He explained that looking the part isn’t all that is needed though, the host has got to be jolly to boot and must love Christmas. I asked Layne why he thought the elves picked him, “Well my beard has turned white and my belly has gotten bigger, I just kinda fit the part I suppose.” Layne also explained to me that just like most children he and his family love the magic of Santa, “We openly greet his arrival and look forward to putting him up. Santa usually comes to Heber on a Reindeer Test Flight that seems to be about the same time as Heber Springs Christmas Open House. Santa loves hanging out in downtown Heber and visiting with everybody.”
Even though Santa claims to be on vacation when he is in town testing those rowdy reindeer he delights in showing up in full Santa fashion at some area events. Layne shared, “Santa does Christmas Open House and lots of public and private visits when he is in town. He visits patients that are in our local hospital and has even been seen at a wedding or two!” Layne told me that by far Santa’s favorite thing to do while in town is ride in the annual Heber Springs Christmas Parade and visiting with the children afterwards. He also wanted me to remind everyone that this year pictures with Santa will be taken after the parade at Back Alley Eats. I asked Layne why he thought that was so important to Santa, “Well, Santa loves spreading Christmas cheer and making sure all the little boys and girls get their list turned in. In fact he has a special mailbox at the local coffee shop on Main Street. He takes great pleasure in watching the children grow up and making sure Heber Springs is saturated with the spirit of Christmas.” Layne recalled being at the First Assembly Church for their Christmas event a few years ago and witnessing first hand that Christmas Spirit come alive. “Santa was taking pictures with everyone, having a great time. There was a young lady present that was not very happy and didn’t want to get her picture taken with her family. No one knew that this particular family had just been reunited after an 18 month separation. Santa could see the mother was so very disappointed and unsure of how to handle the situation. I watched as Santa called the young lady up and had a little personal conversation with her about the true meaning of Christmas and how our Saviors birth was celebrated at Christmas. The young lady was moved and agreed that having a family picture taken with Santa would make her Mom happy. The family got together and took the joyful picture. After the picture I watched as the Mother hugged Santa and told him that she didn’t know what he had said to change her daughter’s mind but that she was very grateful. She then told Santa about how the family had just been re-united.” Layne recalls that there was not a dry eye in the place as Santa and the Mother shared how God controls everything and He is on time every time. Layne noted, “There’s at least one time per year that Santa gets to share the true meaning of Christmas, it’s amazing how it affects those people, particularly Santa.” I asked Layne just how long he thought Santa might continue coming to Heber Springs to whip his reindeer into shape and take in the beautiful aerial lake view, “I’m only 61 and considered young for a Santa host, I can see this lasting a long time, hopefully another couple of decades.” So the next time you see Layne Tubbs hanging out at the Jitterbug you might want to take a second look! It might just be Santa and he is always watching to see who’s naughty and who’s nice. Kimberlee Thomas
At Christmas Time All Roads Lead Home What a stunning home to enjoy the holidays in. Cheryl and Michael Shook wanted to build a nice home that their children and their families could come to and enjoy. They have four children and three grandchildren (with one more grandchild on the way). Water’s Edge - What is your favorite part of the holidays? Cheryl Shook - Getting prepared with all of the decorating, but more importantly, having all of the family here and seeing everybody happy and healthy. Water’s Edge - What is your favorite part of your home? Cheryl Shook - My favorite is the main floor
because of the living area and kitchen it tends to be where we spend most of our time, and when we have guests that’s where everyone gathers as well. We love to be able to share our home with other people and we entertain often, whether it’s to share a meal or sharing a conversation we just love for people to enjoy it as much as we do. Water’s Edge - What would be the main thing you would suggest to someone building their own lake home? Cheryl Shook - Storage is always important in any home, but one of the things we wish we had done in this house is incorporate a stairway for the attic access instead of a pulldown ladder. Also, you can not have too many electrical outlets throughout the house. Thank you to the Shooks for allowing us to share a glimpse inside their lovely lake home! Gina Slagley
