WE Adopt a Pet Joy is strong willed, determined, full of life and loves to play with toys. Sweet Joy was brought to the shelter December 2021 where it was discovered she was born without a hip joint. She does not know she is any different from other cats and gets around a room in record time. When she slows down and focuses, she can bear weight on all fours and “wobble walk”. She uses her litter box, but also needs her cute pants when in open areas. Joy needs an experienced adopter willing to devote lots of love and care to this sweetheart. Her $60 adoption includes first shots, worming, and sterilization. Go to heberspringshumanesociety.com and complete an adoption application. If your application is approved, a volunteer will contact you to set up a meet and greet appointment. This handsome outlaw will steal your heart. Rocco is a ½ Pit mix that was brought to the shelter as a stray. He is happy, friendly and loves people. He doesn’t bother the cats in the office, but doesn’t like other dogs. Rocco would benefit with a yard to run and play with plenty of human attention. This boy will forever be appreciative and loyal to his family. Adopt Rocco!

editors note Turning Focus
Summer is winding down and everyone is turning their focus on preparing for another school year. I remember as a child the smell of those beloved school supplies; Big Chief tablets, #2 pencils, crayons, glue and that big pink eraser... mmmm. Then there were the new clothes and the shoes that mother had kept carefully tucked away in her closet for safe keeping. I remember my teachers well from Kindergarten through college and I am grateful to each and every one for their positive influence upon me.
Holland Wall is another example of what a positive influence can produce. You will find her story along with a new Neighbor, your Hometown Heroes and the tons of fun at this year’s Freedom Fest captured by our own Cynthia Herrin. If you have a story idea or a Neighbor nomination please drop me a line Kimberlee. WatersEdge@gmail.com - Kimberlee Thomas

Arrow’s Cafe & BBQ Earl and Rachel Moore are both originally from the Batesville area and moved to Heber Springs in 2006. Their daughters are graduates of Heber Springs Public Schools. They are a tightknit family and love living in the Heber Springs community. They opened Arrow’s in 2013 where they offer a vast collection of American café diner foods. If you are looking for “Comfort food” then look no further. They offer fried chicken, pork tenderloin, chicken and dressing, meatloaf, chicken potpie, specialty sandwiches and salads along with a large collection of specials suited to serve the southern taste. Arrows employes over 30 people from the Heber area. Earl proudly shared, “We have great folks here who come alongside and provide support and concern for each other.” The couple has worked in and operated other restaurants but they find it very satisfying to serve the community of Heber Springs.
Holland Wall Living Her Best Life Holland Wall is a vivacious, talented, driven and self-proclaimed “weird” young person. Her talents are broad for one who just marked her first decade in life. Holland’s mom, Amanda, shared, “Holland is a great kid. She is very spontaneous and passionate about things. It’s not uncommon for her to walk into a room and declare that she
has undertaken a new project. She has always kind of done her own thing, from writing books to teaching herself Spanish to designing her own sticker series.” When I asked Holland to describe herself she replied, “I’m just Holland. I love school and enjoy learning. I like to have fun and explore. I like trying new things.”
Holland explained that she has been in many plays and recitals and thoroughly enjoys being on stage, “I was in my first play at church when I was three.” To say she is active is an understatement. When she is not busy singing, dancing, performing, painting, reading or playing piano; she enjoys being involved in the Heber Springs Elementary School GATE program, Heber Springs Youth Cheer and the Judi King School of Dance. Holland also enjoys writing, “I won 3rd place in the PBS writers contest in 2019.” She is also a Be-Strong representative for the state of Arkansas. Be-Strong is a global platform whose Mission Statement centers around improving the lives of young people using a peerto-peer approach in order to strengthen mental, emotional and relation health while building resilience and preventing bullying. A very special opportunity presented itself to Holland earlier this year. Arkansas PBS was looking for young talent to record voiceovers of characters for their summer learning programming. Amanda recalled, “An agent emailed us about it. We sat down with my phone and recorded a sample of her voice and sent it in. A few days later they offered her the job and emailed us a script to look at.” Amanda knew this was, “very much in Holland’s wheelhouse” and was excited for the amazing opportunity. 8 Heber Spring’s Social and Community Magazine
I asked Holland what her response was to the news, “For real? Seriously? That’s so cool!” She shared, it was far too exciting to be scary. Holland and her mom met Arkansas PBS Senior Producer and Lead Writer, Corey Womack, at the PBS studios in Conway. According to Holland, “Corey is really nice.” She explained, “I didn’t really have to memorize any lines. It was just like talking to someone or reading a book aloud.” Her favorite part of the process was getting to actually see the end results, “It was super fun!”
Holland voices the character of Randi House in the program titled, “When I was a Third Grader.” The program aims to help children identify and handle their emotions by sharing stories centered around Arkansas Teacher of the Year award recipients as 3rd graders. Randi House was the 2018 Arkansas Teacher of the Year and her experience involves a fear of heights at the skatepark. The program is currently airing as part of season two of “Rise and Shine,” an extensive educational program designed to boost summer learning and offer Water’s Edge Magazine AUGUST 2022 9

K-5 students an engaging way to gain academic knowledge between school years. The program airs weekdays from 8:30-11:30 a.m. I asked Amanda what advice she would offer other parents who find themselves raising such gifted and outgoing children. She responded, “All children are gifted in one way or another. Letting kids just be kids and explore their talents is very important, whatever those talents may be.” She is quick to note, “It certainly does take a village though. My children have been blessed to grow up in this community full of positive role models.” She further shared, “I am beyond grateful for the strong women who have influenced and encouraged Holland. She has had some amazing teachers, instructors and directors over the years.” I enquired of Holland what she thought her future might hold, “I have lots of plans! I really 10 Heber Spring’s Social and Community Magazine
want to do EVERYTHING! I want to go to college. I want to become a doctor. I want to be a writer. I want to be an artist.” And in true Holland fashion she rounded out her impressive list with, “I really want to be the President of the United States eventually.” Holland’s advice to young people when it comes to living out their dreams, “Do whatever makes your heart happy. Know that being weird really is a good thing and live your best life. You really can do anything when you know your worth.”

Home Town Heroes Tell us a little bit about your family. We have four kids. We’re a blended family. So I have two biological kids and two step kids. The dynamics work really well. There’s no his and hers. We’re all one giant family. And all the kids are into sports like soccer, softball, basketball, ballet… pretty much everything. What got you interested in this line of work? I started out as a military police officer almost right out of high school. When I left the military in 2012, I applied in Heber as an officer and worked for seven and half years and got kind of burnt out. So I left for a year and just started back recently. This is what I like doing. It’s my passion. I can’t really see myself doing anything else.

people who need to be in jail in jail, but that’s not how it happens because of the system. But just helping people all in all. I think the most rewarding thing is helping kids. You go to houses and they don’t have the best of everything…some have nothing and mom and dad are fighting, the kids still want to say hi and want to look at your car. Most of the time they’re super excited to see you. Even during the worst time for them, they like seeing you there and you get to show them a brighter future.
Who is your hero in life? My hero is Arlis. Arlis was like a great grandpa to me. He was a WWII vet and passed away last year. He had more drive and motivation than anybody that I’ve ever met. He saw things and did things that a lot of people obviously never will. He was there for the D Day invasion at Normandy. You’d never know by talking to him or just looking at him because he was such a humble dude. That’s what I want to be when I grow up. What do you find most rewarding about being a police officer? I want to say getting drugs off the street and getting the

Tell me a little bit about your family. I’ve been married to Megan for 11 years. We have twin girls who are 7 and a 10 year old boy. What got you interested in the fire service? I’ve been a first responder for a while. I moved to Arkansas about 5 months ago and before that I was a highway patrolman for California. I made the transition to fire because it’s primarily helping people, which I liked about highway patrol, but without the prosecution side. *chuckle* What’s one thing most people don’t know about you? I’m shy. *chuckle* Who’s your hero in life? My brother. I’ve always looked up to him and we always take care of each other.

I felt for the hope, the belief, and the fortitude of healing. If We are Source and Source is capable of anything, what is holding us back? Persons with Disassociative Disorder (formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder), have been shown to hold different resting heart rates from one personality to the next. Even a difference in ocular pressure. These are conditions that stay consistent, per personality, as does our own. So, does that mean our physcial measurements can be changed by our minds; Blood Pressure, Resting Sugar, Heart Rate? Eye color, height, fat loss, muscle development? All indicators point to that being true, so, what is it that prevents us from changing the things we wish to change? Actual Physical restrictions? Mental restrictions? Belief? 20 Heber Spring’s Social and Community Magazine
