Oreo is a handsome, 2 year-old Labrador mix, and all around great dog that will make a wonderful companion. He was brought to the shelter and not claimed. He is a friendly, happy dog with a medium energy level and well mannered personality. Daily exercise and training would benefit and satisfy Oreo along with a loving devoted human. He is heartworm positive, but the shelter will treat him without negative effects. He can still be adopted and would certainly love the support and love of a home recovery. Adopt Oreo and make him your new best friend. Oreo’s adoption fee is $100.00 and this includes sterilization, shots, and worming with an optional microchipping and registration for an additional $20.00. We have a dog park to check compatibility with existing dogs. Fill out an adoption application at heberspringshumanesociety.com If your application is approved, a volunteer will contact you to set up a meet and greet appointment.
Trey is a friendly 2 year old DSH Tabby that was brought to the shelter because his owner could not care for him. Trey loves people and enjoys being held and rubbed. He requires a special food that he must eat for the rest of his life for urinary care. He gets along with other cats, but it would be best if he were the only cat so as not to accidentally eat other cat food. Trey will make a wonderful companion and is waiting right now at the shelter to go home with you. If you are the right fit, please adopt sweetTrey. Trey’s adoption fee is $60.00 and this includes first shots, worming, and sterilization. Anyone interested in adopting Lily, please go to heberspringshumanesociety. com and complete an adoption application. 501.362.7322 humanesocietyhebersprings@yahoo.com 49 Shelter Lane, Heber Springs, Arkansas 72543 Tuesday thru Saturday 12:00 to 4:30 | Sunday and Monday Closed.

editors note
The Holidays are upon us and with a limited number of shopping days before Christmas, I urge you to remember to shop small, shop local.
My Christmas wish for you and yours is peace of spirit, abundance of joy, and a heart filled with gratitude for all the blessings your life holds. We often get lost in the “have not” mindset especially this time of year. May we all take a moment this holiday season and unwrap our “haves” one at a time until we find our lap piled full of the gifts of our Creator. Even in what we perceive to be our leanest times, there is abundance to be found. Abundance is not all about monetary possessions, it is about so much more.
More, you ask? Yes. More. Look within yourself, do
you have an abundance of peace? Share it with your family and friends by sitting quietly with them in their moments of chaos. Maybe you have an abundance of happiness, share it through a smile with a stranger in passing. Perhaps you possess an abundance of hope, share with one who has lost theirs by providing a listening ear or a shoulder to lean on. We often forget that one of the greatest gifts of all to those around us, is simply ourselves. Our time, our attention, our laughter, our genuine concern and willingness to simply “be” there.
So, amid the hustle and bustle of the season remember, your presence is a present.
With Gratitude, Joy and Peace, - Kimberlee Thomas
WE Neighbor of the Month
Where did you grow up:
I grew up in the ever-expanding town of Cabot, AR. In 2018, my family and I moved to the small town of Quitman.
Education/ Work:
I graduated from Cabot High School and then continued my education with Arkansas State University. I am enjoying my dream job as the Children’s Librarian of the Cleburne County Library. And I must say, it is one of the most fun jobs that I have ever had!
Family:
My husband and I got married in 2018. I have three sons that attend school at Quitman and a bonus daughter who goes to Cabot schools.
What is something people don’t know about you:
As a child I was very shy! I homeschooled through most of elementary years before attending public schools. More recently, I was blessed to be able to homeschool my boys for two years. That was such a special time for us that I will always be grateful for.
Hobbies:
I love being out in nature and in the sunshine! During my free time you will often catch me out on nature walks, kayaking, or just exploring the beauty of all that is around me. I really enjoy taking my Bible or a good devotional outside to read in my hammock or down by the lake.
Idea for a fun weekend:
My idea of a fun weekend is taking a little road trip with my family. My family and I love going up to Bear Creek, off the Buffalo River and then making our way to Mountain View. It’s such a beautiful drive and there is always lots for us to do!
What do you enjoy most about living/working in the Heber Springs Community:
I absolutely love this little town! There are always fun events happening and the community is so supportive! I could not imagine working in a better town than Heber Springs, AR!

#1.) The 6th grade Open House is always so exciting. The students are transitioning from elementary school to middle school. They are filled with excitement and nervousness, and it brings back so many of my own memories. They leave that evening with more confidence than when they entered as they are ready to embark on a new journey. Middle schoolers are the most fun!! -Kristin Euton

#2) “Your offer has been accepted” is my favorite memory of 2022. Perfectly partnered with my talented husband, Casey Stone, who is willing to help make my dream of renovating something old a reality. I feel so blessed to be a part of something so important to downtown Heber Springs. This building is not just our project. It truly belongs to the people of Heber Springs with all its wonderful history. -Felicia Stone

#3.) A favorite memory from 2022 was hanging out with the community school students! It was a blast and a much needed pick me up.
-Levy Burris
#4.) One of my favorite events that we do is the Teacher Appreciation Lunch. This is a time that we as a community are able to give back to our teachers, administration, and staff of Heber Springs School District. As a token of our appreciation, we provide lunch and numerus giveaways that businesses throughout our community donate for this event. It is always fun to see everyone enjoying the break during their backto-school preparations. Our teachers, administration and staff work very hard every school year, we want them to know we appreciate them!

#5.) This year has been full of memorable events for me! From a banquet full of awards, Freedom Fest and of course the cardboard boats, teachers starting school, ribbon cuttings, and spotlights, to a Casino Night full of fun –I’ve enjoyed it all! Of course, the best event for me was beginning a new season of life working for the Chamber. I truly appreciate the warm welcome, support, and patience I have received. Looking forward to an event filled 2023!

#6.) Heber Springs has so many great events in our community throughout the year that it’s hard to choose, but one of my favorite events was the Chamber’s very first Casino Night. The event was a great way for our businesses to network in a fun, relaxed environment, and we plan to make it an annual event. Planning is already underway for the Chamber’s 2023 events including our Annual Chamber Banquet and Freedom Fest on the Lake. Hope to see everyone there!

#7.) It has been really cool to see the trail system develop the way it has this year. It is a great addition to our area. Parts of it use the old railroad beds from the M&NA railroad. Many thanks to the committee and Frank Wimberley. -Stan Lee

Kate Gonzalez is a 5th Grader at Heber Springs Elementary. This is her first year at Heber, and she has hit the ground running. Kate is in the gifted and talented program, honors choir, and brings to Heber a thirst for Bible knowledge. Her Bible Quiz team placed 3rd at Nationals this summer, battling some students twice her age. Her desire for what is right, combined with her imagination and creativity, have created a young lady that isn’t afraid to stand up and stand out. When she isn’t at church or school, you can find her on a pickleball court, climbing a tree, creating art projects, or playing with her puppy. Her teachers describe her as smart, kind, funny, and a joy to be around. Welcome to Heber, Kate!

#12.) This year one event that rocked my world was Relay For Life. Being on the survivor side of this event held new meaning for me. When this picture was taken, I had finished up Chemo and having scans and blood work showing I was NED. A Survivor. Thank you HS for honoring Cancer Survivors.

#13.) There are so many great events in Heber Springs so it’s hard to pick a favorite! I loved seeing the World Championship Cardboard Boat Races back at Sandy Beach and all the creative boats that entered this year! And Christmas Open House is always a favorite, seeing everyone in the Christmas spirit out shopping and having fun! -Ali Sugg
The Chamber had our first Casino Night event on November 3rd at the Red Apple Inn & Country Club. It was a fun way for businesses to get together and network. Everyone had a great time, and the overwhelming response to this new event exceeded our expectations. We’re already planning for next year’s event. Thank you to our sponsors, businesses that donated raffle items, and volunteers for making this event a success. We appreciate all you do for our community!

profession?
As an EMT instructor, I find it rewarding when I teach students to become EMT’s. And hearing about the future path that they take. They’ll come back to me and say “I got my EMT license and I’m moving on to something better”. I find that very rewarding.
Tell me a little bit about your family.
I have a small hometown family. I’ve pretty much lived here my whole life. My parents still live here… oh and I have a brother and a sister, and then I’m the youngest.
What made you decide to serve Heber Springs?
It’s just something I’ve always thought about doing when I was a kid. I’ve always wanted to serve my community and see if I can make it a better place.
What do you find most rewarding about being a firefighter?
I know there’s a lot of times when you’re there to help people on their worst day. Just being able to make that impact on somebody for a positive benefit on a really bad day. There’s always a lot of bad stuff we have to deal with but there’s also a lot of rewarding things we get to live with.
What do you find most challenging about the fire service?
That’s a hard question to answer. Even when there’s a challenge, as a firefighter, we’re problem solvers. We’re going to figure out how to get through that challenge.
