WE Adopt a Pet

Meet Pretty Penny, a 3 year old Mountain Cur/Labrador mix brought to the shelter as a stray. Penny is a friendly medium sized, loving gal that needs love and a home badly. She is fun with a mature energy, loves to sit with volunteers and soak up as much attention as possible.

Kennel life has made it so it’s best if she’s the only dog in the family. Please consider Penny, she really deserves a life outside the shelter. Adopt Penny, she needs you!

Meet Elvis, a 1 year old gray Tabby that was brought to the shelter as a stray. Elvis is not much of a lover. He is independent and doesn’t like to be held. He would make a good barn cat as long as he was the only cat in the barn. He doesn’t like other cats. Elvis would really like the opportunity to live somewhere else besides the shelter in a cage. If you need a barn cat, please consider Elvis.

Elvis’ adoption fee is $60.00 which includes first shots, worming, and sterilization. Anyone interested in adopting for Elvis, please go to heberspringshumanesociety.com and complete an adoption application. If your application is approved, a volunteer will contact you to set up a meet and greet appointment.

Penny’s adoption fee is $100.00 and this includes sterilization, shots, and worming with an optional microchipping and registration for an additional $20.00. We have a dog park to try out possible siblings. Fill out an adoption application at heberspringshumanesociety. com A volunteer will contact you for a meet and greet appointment. WE Neighbor of the Month

Where did you grow up?

I was born and raised here in Heber Springs.

Education:

I graduated from Heber High in 2011. In 2015, I graduated with my degree from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro and became a Physical Therapist Assistant. I spent 6.5 years as a PTA helping orthopedic and pelvic health patients reach their goals. I loved that job, but God called me to open my very own flower shop back home. And that’s when Flowers By Hayley began.

Work:

I own Flowers By Hayley, off S 11th Street. It’s a floral and gift shop here in Heber Springs. I create fresh and silk arrangements for every day and events such as funerals, weddings, holidays, dinner parties, etc. I also host floral classes.

Family:

My husband Jake and I have been married for almost 4 years. We have two dogs, Bear & Baxter, two cats, Willy & Marty, and three chickens. #farmlife

What is something people don’t know about you?

I am a big football fan! You’ll catch me rooting for the Heber Panthers and Arkansas Razorbacks every weekend. I also love NFL and participating in Fantasy Football. (I’m the reigning champ from last year’s Fantasy League.)

Hobbies:

Spending time with my family and fur babies, reading (my goal is to read one book a month), camping, and of course making pretty floral arrangements.

Just Treats!

Idea of a fun weekend:

Camping at Heber Rec D Loop, watching the sunset on the bluffs, and a sunrise boat ride on GFL.

Making the World a Better Place

I was able to catch up with Cody Davis not long ago. I found Cody to be a dedicated and devoted father, husband, son, brother, and business owner. His plate is certainly full, however his cup runnith’ over with joy. I discovered there are many things that vie for his attention during his waking hours and yet he manages to find a solid balance between the demands of work and the joy, care and love of family and community. His heartfelt desire to make the world a better place is strong. This desire shines through when he speaks of one of his favorite organizations,

Make-A- Wish.

WE - Cody, tell me a bit about yourself, your education, family and career.

Cody - I was born and raised here in beautiful Heber Springs. My family has always been very plugged into the community, especially through my mom and dad, Ricky & Cindy Davis, who own the local Sonic Drive In. They are incredible parents, mentors, and business leaders and I owe a lot of my success to them. After graduating from Heber Springs High School in 2005 I attended the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree with an emphasis on Computers in Art. While going to school in Fayetteville I met my beautiful wife, Allison, who has been the best wife and friend a guy could ask for. In 2012, I went into business with my father Ricky Davis as the Director of Technology and Marketing for our Sonic group. After commuting for a few

years, Allison and I decided to move to Heber Springs in 2016 where we are now raising our two beautiful daughters Emily (10) and Ella (6). Along with overseeing the technology and marketing for our Sonic Drive in locations (31 in total). I am also the owner/franchisee of five Slim Chickens restaurants (1 in Searcy AR and the other 4 in the Memphis area). Along with my older brother Scott Davis and our business partner Josh Rowden, we will be developing 25 Slim Chickens

Restaurants throughout Tennessee.

WE – Cody I understand you have a strong heartfelt connection to the MakeA-Wish Foundation. Share with me how you came to be involved with the foundation and granting wishes.

Cody – Over the years we have worked a lot with Make-A-Wish through our Sonic Drive Ins, so when we started looking into some local organizations in the Memphis

area to partner with, MakeA-Wish was at the front of our minds. In 2019, when we opened our first Slim Chickens in Southaven, Mississippi, we had the privilege of working with Brooke Ehrhart and her team at Make-A-Wish MidSouth. We were introduced to Brooke and her team by our construction company, F&F Construction out of Memphis, and made the decision early on to partner with them and fully fund granting a wish for a child.

Brooke and her team at Make-A-Wish Mid-South were such a great group of people to work with. They are driven and passionate individuals who truly have a heart for the kids and families they are working with. It’s that passion and desire to go above and beyond for these kids and their families, which continues to inspire me to work with Make-A-Wish.

It was during the grand opening of our first Slim Chickens in Memphis that we had a young girl who qualified for a wish come out with the Chamber of Commerce to do our Ribbon cutting. When she arrived, she had no idea that

home loans.

When you choose First Security, finding the right home gets even better. That’s because our bankers are here to make the whole process easier, whether you’re a first-time buyer or a seasoned homeowner. So you end up with the home you want – and the experience you deserve.

same day the team at Make-A-Wish would be revealing to her that her wish was being granted. We had all her friends and family in on the surprise, and after the ribbon cutting ceremony, we invited her into the restaurant where we had pictures of the life-sized playhouse that F&F Construction would be building for her. We also had all the small furniture and toys that would be going inside of it. The surprise and joy on her face when she saw that her wish was being granted is something I will never forget and couldn’t be prouder to have been a part of.

That day I got to witness firsthand the heart and passion of the Make-A-Wish team as they brought joy to this little girl. After being a part of something like that,

my business partners and I decided that we would do everything we could to grant a wish at each of our openings. It is such a great way to give back to the community who show up so big to support us, and we couldn’t think of a better way of giving back.

WE – Cody share with me what you can about some of the children that you’ve been able to assist within the Make-A-Wish program.

Cody - Although I cannot go into any specifics on the children or their families, I can say that the children we get to grant wishes for are those here in our local communities that our restaurants serve in. We have been blessed with the opportunity

you can’t be everywhere at once, but we can be anywhere you are.

to grant wishes for kids in Independence County and Lonoke County, as well as Shelby County in Tennessee and Desoto County in Mississippi. The children range in a variety of ages and the wishes we get to grant are just as unique as the kids we get to grant them for. We have been so fortunate to get to play a part in granting wishes like trips to Disney world, building gaming computers, and even granting a wish for a young teenage musician. We were able to convince him to play his new guitar on our patio the night we granted his wish.

I was recently told by Make-A-Wish that doctors diagnose one child every 20 minutes with a critical illness. Recent studies have shown that the wishes Make-A-Wish are able to grant provide long-term impact through increased emotional and physical health, making children more likely to overcome their conditions. The

experience can be a game-changer that brings joy and a sense of normalcy back into a family’s life.

Being fortunate enough to play a small role in helping to bring that joy and normalcy to a kid’s life is a huge blessing. One of my favorite quotes is from a great movie, Kingdom of Heaven, and it is “What man is a man who does not make the world better”. That quote has always spoke to me and I knew if I ever had the opportunity to help make somebody’s life better it was my duty to do so, and in turn that will one day play a bigger part in making this world a better place.

*Make-A-Wish® grants the wishes of children with critical illnesses. Our belief in the power and impact of a wish is what guides us and inspires us to grant the wish of every eligible child.

Children who are eligible for a wish are not necessarily terminal. Make-A-Wish grants the wishes of children with critical illnesses. The majority of wish kids go on to manage, and even overcome, their illness. Each year, MakeA-Wish Mid-South grants wishes for nearly 300 children locally.

To do this, Make-A-Wish relies solely on fundraisers, corporate support, and donations from the public to transform lives, one wish at a time. For more information about donating to help kids in central Arkansas, please visit wish. org/midsouth or call (501) 376-9474. Another great way to get involved with Make a Wish is to become a volunteer (airport greeter, wish granter, event volunteer, etc.). To become a volunteer, those interested can reach out to Ashleigh Rainer at arainer@midsouth.wish.org

Notes from the ClearingJoey Thomas

Taken by the way the tide comes in waves, like my moods, and my ideas, and my life’s seasons. Time comes in waves, fading to unnoticed until that next wave of awareness catches us up in the current so eager to push us past now. The light within us comes in waves, blinking in our bouts of depression or lost motivation, like morse code from the light house keeper. Our love comes in waves, a child’s love for mother and father, growing to friend concern and puppy-love, to a passionate love that brings our parental love, so deep and strong, the world should be on watch. Tides of light and three dimensional space, seemingly so vibrant within the unseen matter all about us, keeping watch as we rock in our tiny tidal pool.
