EYEON HIGH TECH INSPIRATION DAY
Kick off The day starts at 9.00 at the large characteristic meeting room on the ground floor of Croy Castle. After a short introduction from Emile van Geel (EyeOn), everybody is spreading through the castle to attend the presentations. The High Tech Inspiration Day contains 13 different workshops and presentations including 2 keynote speakers. Find out what this day was all about on the following pages!
Session 1 LEAN: reduce waste by revealing hidden talents
Who? Edwin Sengers (Philips Consumer Luminaires) About? Reducing waste (costs) by revealing hidden talent and improving communication within an organization can greatly enhance performance. Edwin Sengers showed how impressive results have been achieved and customers have been delighted. “The one goal in my business life is to improve service levels. For me this was a journey of learning that gives me lots of energy and drive each day.” “If you want to change the way people work you have to get to know them. A lot of positive energy for realizing improvements can be unleashed by getting in touch with your people and investing in them.”
“You’d be surprised at how previously hidden talent crops up when you give people the opportunity to show it. Give them a chance and they’ll grab it!” “I particularly liked the ‘Change Management’ model I saw today because it fits perfectly with my ideas.”

Session 2 Inventory fitness! How to get your inventory into shape? Who? Stephan Wouters (EyeOn) & Emile van Geel (EyeOn) About? Inventory fitness is often a big challenge and is due to the many interdependent factors involved. Stephan Wouters and Emile van Geel (both EyeOn) provided insights on how to reduce inventories and get them under control related to the targets set. “In my experience planning is everything.” “It was remarkable how the large number of participants were willing to share their current and future challenges. The castle and its surroundings definitely contributed to the open sphere, which promoted knowledge sharing.” “There were many new participants who enjoyed sharing their knowledge and especially being able to make their own choice of subjects to follow, which really excited people.” “Having plenty of time to speak to each other and network was a key ingredient.” “People openly acknowledged the fact that EyeOn has again underlined its value and track record in the high tech branch.” “We received plenty of feedback following our inventory management presentation and this has given us more ideas for future events.” “Whatever you do regarding inventory management, it needs to be shared, acknowledged and addressed at senior management level.”
Session 3 How to manage the global production of a marine vessel Who? Frank Verhelst (Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding) About? Global production presents challenges to the logistics and planning processes due to engineering, purchasing and production taking place at different locations. These have been met successfully in the shipbuilding industry. Frank Verhelst (Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding) explained how they were overcome in a new project for the Indonesian government. “Controlling the shipbuilding process and planning the building of a new vessel starts during the design phase and means that the first three months of a project are extremely important.” “A modular design and construction method means that building can take place in several places around the world. Optimizing knowledge and experience over several locations is key to the process.” “Strategic partners play a key role in the early phase of a project. We know EyeOn very well and have been working together with them successfully.” “Of course shipbuilding is very important to us, but it’s also great to get inspired by industries outside our branch. You can always learn a lot from those outside your own industry.” “At an event like this you are always looking for similarities and to find appropriate solutions.”
EYEON HIGH TECH INSPIRATION DAY
Session 4 Risk management in High Tech supply chains: A kickstart Who? Onno Cleeren (EyeOn) About? Risk management is shown in trend studies to be one of the forthcoming issues for upcoming years, but it is lagging behind its perceived importance. Onno Cleeren (EyeOn) presented takeaways to elevate it. “Risk is the prospect of not making the necessary return.” “It would be good if people were more confident to put this topic on the management agenda.” “Large companies are not always that important for suppliers in the high tech branch.” “Each industry is different. There is no standard approach for either the high tech or any other branch.”
Session 5 Have a foresight on your business planning Who? Marcel Verpaalen (Philips Healthcare) About? Business planning foresight has been raised another notch with a forecasting/ demand planning tool developed by Philips with support from EyeOn. Marcel Verpaalen (Philips Healthcare) explained how it is enabling an effective S&OP process and a quarterly rolling financial forecast. “We shared our learnings and experiences of the worldwide roll-out. Participants were keen to learn how to drive change.” “The involvement of all disciplines is essential to bring together the perspectives of each other’s situation.” “Blueprint the process with stakeholders from both the commercial as well as industrial sides because they are often miles apart.” “A key learning was that data quality is vital to the quality of the end result.” “Participants were very interested in the KPIs we used in our project.” “It takes a lot of effort. A sales guy doesn’t see the benefits of a better S&OP process so make sure that everyone sees the benefits.” “We are now maturing the process and making it into a real IT system for integration into the industrial environment.”
Session 6 Creating win-win situations by acting on POS data Who? Sjef Jongen (Logitech) & Emile van Geel (EyeOn) About? Creating a win-win situation by acting on point-of-sale data was the message of Sjef Jongen (Logitech) and Emile van Geel (EyeOn) at a session that showed a practical approach to point-of-sale data usage in support of a better understanding of customers. “The biggest challenge we faced was a bonusscheme-driven sales mentality.” “Start small with a pragmatic approach, but don’t just look at small areas, take a whole company view.” “Inspiration Day was very down to earth and quite different to the big supply-chain conferences I have attended, which normally lack substance.” “I recognized everything that was said today. Nobody has found the holy grail yet, but everyone talked the same language.”
Session 7 Practical case: Integrated PxQ planning Who? Martin Daudey (KeyOn) About? Integrated PxQ planning was the subject of a session presented by Martin Daudey (KeyOn), who used a practical case to demonstrate several different software solutions and present experiences gained during implementation. “The objective of PxQ planning is to arrive at a reliable forecast.” “This was my first Inspiration Day and although this is not a new subject, PxQ planning was quite new to some people.” “Participants were very enthusiastic and prepared to be interactive in the relaxed atmosphere.” “We showed the many different ways and demonstrated the various tools to support it, together with their pros and cons.” “Cloud planning is the future for planning solutions. It’s much more flexible and planners who realize its value are investing in it.” “Big names in business software, e.g. Oracle, IBM and SAP, do it differently and grew big on this. But these packages are separate tools and not integrated.”
The High Tech team Emile van Geel (EyeOn) and Paul Husslage (EyeOn) were joint organizers of the High Tech Inspiration Day. Emile: “Bringing together people from the same business area is a good recipe for success. The day inspired many people. I’m sure our potential customers were happy with it. Today’s format was roughly the same as our first event, except there was more diversity in the content. The attendance at today’s event was even higher than the previous one. When they have the same issues and are back at work, I hope EyeOn is the first number they call.” Paul: “We had a record number of participants this time and next time I hope we can make it even larger. It’s all about the companies you invite. The participants are the key to success. I liked how we were able to use all of the castle’s rooms, which was not the case at our first event. Being under one roof gave the event a certain buzz. I’m proud of what we achieved today.”
What are EyeOn’s values? Drive to Deliver Your job is our job. Fun Our projects generate positive energy. Freedom We are only bound to maximize client value. No-nonsense We are approachable and down-to-earth. Thought leadership We love to learn and exchange knowledge. Why did the EyeOn High Tech team organize this Inspiration Day? Keynote quotes Continuous transformation Who? Freek Aertsen (EyeOn) About? Continuous transformation was the subject of a keynote address by Freek Aertsen (EyeOn), in which the findings of a new study into the latest challenges and best practices for the High Tech supply chain were presented. EyeOn carried out the study in co-operation with TiasNimbas Business School. “Forecasting is about people and not just numbers.” “The energy that was released today was phenomenal.” “People really got inspired to talk to each other in the relaxed atmosphere.”
“I thought the first High Tech Inspiration Day we held last year was good, but this one exceeded expectations.” “We’ve had very positive feedback from our guest confirming our own impressions that this was an extremely successful day.”
Session 9 Leveraging integrated business planning Who? Loek Lemmens (EyeOn) About? Integrated business planning (IBP) / S&OP is now an industry standard practice. Loek Lemmens (EyeOn) explained what is truly ‘best practice’ IBP/S&OP and where it can benefit a company. “Attendance was high and we had a good discussion among a very interactive group.” “It was interesting to see the imbalance between the approaches people take to the subject.” “Some customers see it simply as quantity x price = business plan, but this leads to politics in other planning areas.” “Others see it as the deviation between the financial plan and the demand plan, but it isn’t purely a mathematical exercise.” “The solution we showed doesn’t lead to politics.”
Session 10 Change management
Who? Wilma van ’t Kruijs (Bloesom) About? Change management is a world of surprises. Realization coach Wilma van’t Kruijs (Bloesom) presented a story of success, but also pitfalls to watch out for. “Everything you do begins with involvement, so invite others to join in and work with you.” “You should really believe that people have value. Show progress and celebrate even minor successes.” “What matters most is how you see yourself, so look frequently in the mirror and ask if you are doing it right.” “Don’t judge all the time. Every person has a right to their own process.” “Invite people to show their potential instead of just sending your message into the airwaves.” “A good company is aware of its people and a good manager lets them know that he or she is more than just a knowledge sender.”
Session 11 Social forecasting
Who? Miel Theeuwen (EyeOn) About? Social forecasting offers a new resource for companies to tap into. Miel Theeuwen (EyeOn) explored techniques to improve forecasting by connecting directly with consumers. “There was a buzz of interaction due in no small part to the intensive contact enabled by the great environment at Croy.” “The subject matter was quite new for many participants and proved to be a source of interest and inspiration.” “There is huge potential value for companies supplying consumer products by tapping into consumer bases using on-line tools.” “The world has changed. Companies need to be out there. Companies like Nokia are discovering the added value.” “EyeOn is working together with Nokia on using the benefits of user-generated web content to bridge the gap between consumers and new solutions.” “Product managers used to be asked how many units and in which colours to produce them. Now this information can be obtained from consumers directly.”
Session 12 Help! We can’t deliver!
Who? Stijn Rutjes (EyeOn) & Yulia Meshalkina (EyeOn) About? Managing allocation effectively is crucial in times of scarcity of materials or under capacity. Stijn Rutjes (EyeOn) presented a simple model to deal with the problem. Stijn: “Optimising profits is fine, but avoiding customer disappointment is crucial.” “It’s good to use a model as a starting point, but it requires expertise to translate the outcome.” “Our model looks at service-level optimization from an organizational point of view.” “We are building a showcase to demonstrate a practical model at one of our customers.”
EYEON HIGH TECH INSPIRATION DAY
Keynote quotes Corporate entrepreneurship Who? Rein Denekamp (Pentagon) About? Corporate entrepreneurship is something that needs promoting in order to develop proactivity and agility within a company. In his keynote address, Rein Denekamp (Pentagon) focused on the struggle that organizations face while adapting to this change.
“Keep in mind that it’s about exploration. Passionately seek new opportunities and pursue them with discipline.”
“We don’t need a boss to tell us how the world looks. We can see that for ourselves.”
“Managers remove obstacles! And middle management is the broad band where most issues have to be dealt with.”
“There’s a lot of turbulence within a company. Make it your friend by being more flexible, creative, responsive, relentless, proactive, risk taking, innovative and opportunistic.”
“It’s a battling act to bring new business ideas into an organization. It’s a balancing act between what we are and what we’d like to be.”
“Support experiments, favour the doers and the risk takers, recognize performance, allow rule bending and tolerate failure.” “Entrepreneurship is a requirement. It will happen within your industry too!”

Eye on participants What did the participants think about the High Tech Inspiration Day and what did they learn?
Erik van der Vliet (Nokia) participated in the High Tech Inspiration Day and was indeed inspired by the day’s proceedings: “We are currently considering a new project for the consumer electronics business. I found the LEAN and Social Forecasting presentations particularly interesting.” “Social forecasting is a new and hot topic for us. It adds up to what we need to do.” “We are wrestling with colour forecasting within the consumer branch and need support in this.”
Peter Laros (Adimec Advanced Image Systems) also attended the first High Tech Inspiration Day. Getting a handle on the future intrigues him. “I don’t understand why forecasting is so difficult. We haven’t resolved it yet, but we are working on it.” “Most companies are happy to know what to deliver months ahead. Our company builds to order and we may only find out what is required tomorrow.” “I’m always interested in how you can forecast for new products.” “I’d like to know how to combine roadmapping with launching a new product on the market.” “I’m really looking forward to the next event involving all EyeOn networks.”
Dirk Jan Westerink (Ericsson) participated in his second HighTech Inspiration Day and was enthusiastic about the sessions he attended. “At Ericsson the quest for improvement is continuous. I was particularly interested in the sessions on LEAN and change management.” “Uncertainty is a big issue and we have learnt that it takes time for people to feel involved in changes.” “Today we saw how close you really need to get to people in order to ensure full involvement from the team.” “Make sure the team stays motivated even though changes are being made that might have serious consequences for them personally.”
