Opening Ceremony

Luminaries officially open COMPUTEX 2019 looking to the next generation of computing development COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2019 opened on Tuesday with President Tsai Ing-wen praising Taiwan’s ICT industry, noting that the industry totalled US$157 billion in exports per year and served as the engine of Taiwan’s economic growth and a key part of the global supply chain. Focusing on AI and IoT; blockchain; 5G, innovations & startups; gaming and extended reality (XR), COMPUTEX brings together the entire supply chain and value chain, with buyers and vendors meeting to exchange ideas, discover and advance the latest industry trends, and learn from the successes of their peers. Tsai was joined at Tuesday’s opening ceremony by Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) Chairman James C.F. Huang. “Like a huge, digital tsunami, new technologies have transformed our global economy in the past few years. Today, we are living in an era where everything is connected and constantly learning from each other. In order to survive and thrive in this new digital landscape, every industry has to be a digital industry, and every BNLO@MX ÄMNÄL@SSDQÄVG@SÄÆDKCRÄXNTÄ@QDÄHM ÄG@RÄ to be a tech company,” Huang said. “In that sense, COMPUTEX is not just a show that serves only the global ICT industry. COMPUTEX is here to serve everybody, in every company, in every industry… COMPUTEX will have something to offer you that will give you a digital edge, connect you with new ideas, new technologies and new business.”

nations, and our countries are gateways: Taiwan to Europe, and the Netherlands to Asia.” Jorritsma went on to describe similarities between the two nations, such as export volumes and relative economic size and power, while sharing challenges such as labor and talent shortages. “Over 250 Dutch companies export to Taiwan,” )NQQHSRL@ÄR@HC ÄADENQDÄM@LHMFÄ3@HV@MDRDÄÆQLRÄ such as ASUSTeK that have operations in the Netherlands, making the Taiwanese-Dutch relationship “very fruitful.” Ministry of Economic Affairs Minister Shen Jong-Chin said ICT exports increased by an annual 2.56 percent to US$157 billion, and he was followed by President Tsai, who took the stage to say that innovation and creativity propelled the ICT industry to its current success.

Her administration will continue to advance its Asian Silicon Valley and Digital Nation and Innovative Economic Development projects to advance the digital sector in Taiwan, she said. To promote innovators and startups, COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2019 also includes InnoVEX, a special exhibition area featuring 467 startups from 25 countries, the organizers said. The program closed with a brief awards ceremony for the COMPUTEX d&i awards, with prizes going to Acer for its Smart Parking Meter System, to Augmented Intelligence Inc. for its BodyMap anatomical visualization product, @MCÄSNÄ!HN/QNÄ2BHDMSHÆBÄENQÄHSRÄ-DT+HUDÄAQ@HMÄ monitoring system. AI and 5G-driven development, digital twins and blockchain applications are key factors in making this change,” said Walter Yeh, CEO and president of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council, the organizer of the

forum. “However, it is not only in the business sector; these new advanced technologies have also impacted our lives and our futures.” “We’re quickly moving towards a world where everyone and everything is intelligently connected,” said Alex Katouzian, senior vice president and general manager of mobile at Qualcomm, which on Monday launched HSRÄÆQRSÄ &Ä/"ÄBNKK@ANQ@SHNMÄVHSGÄ+DMNUNÄ@SÄ COMPUTEX. “Now we’re moving toward connecting everything to its environment, and at the center of that, everything is gonna get powered by 5G.”

“Imagine you’ll be able to work anywhere … and be able to connect to anybody and to all your data... And the way to do that is to share the compute resource with the cloud edge,” he said, providing as examples seamless on-location video work and real-time translation, bandwidth for which would be provided by 5G. Katouzian briefed attendees on the history of the firm’s 5G development, including numerous milestones over the past few years, saying that the technology’s rapidly accelerating development has already begun changing connectivity for everyone and every industry.

“AI is all about fitting the gap between machines and humans to allow us to work together at scale,” Mookerjee said, highlighting advances in AI and how they are being applied in real-world use. “In IBM, we use the word AI slightly differently... We call it augmenting intelligence... It’s about augmenting people to do their jobs better.” Guillaume Gerondeau, vice president of transportation and mobility industry in Asia for Dassault Systemes, later shifted the focus to how to disrupt the way new innovations in the digital world are imagined, developed, manufactured @MCÄL@QJDSDCÄVHSGÄ@ÄCHFHS@KÄSVHM ÄTRHMFÄGHRÄÆDKCÄ of expertise, mobility, as an example. “Experience is going to drive innovation,” Gerondeau said. “If you start from experience, you will start from a real location … for which DEÆBHDMBXÄ NEÄ LNAHKHSXÄ HRÄ FNHMFÄ SNÄ ADÄ BQHSHB@KÄ because it’s going to attract more business, more people.” “Digitalization has major impacts on all players,” he said, highlighting some of the OQHL@QXÄADMDÆSRÄNEÄ@ÄCHFHS@KÄSVHM ÄHMBKTCHMFÄ the ability to develop an entire system virtually and use immersive experiences to convince users as to its feasibility. A digital twin also allows for disruption to be simulated, which means its progress can then be monitored, Gerondeau said, adding that because it is virtual, it compresses time and saves on costs because no physical prototype is necessary, and it therefore lowers the requirements for entry into established industries. Garage+ Pavillion: 30 startups seek collaboration in Taiwan Startups showcase latest technologies in the fields of AI and big data, IoT and smart devices, digital health and green tech at COMPUTEX TAIPEI Looking for a wide range of potential global buyers and partners, 30 thriving startups from 10 countries are showcasing their latest technology OQNCTBSRÄ@SÄSGDÄ&@Q@FD Ä/@UHKHNMÄ@SÄ-@MF@MFÄ Exhibition Center, Hall 1, Booth M0430, during COMPUTEX TAIPEI. These companies include 17 international and 13 Taiwanese startups selected from among 252 startups from 52 countries under the $ONBGÄ%NTMC@SHNMiRÄ&@Q@FD Ä(MBTA@SNQÄ2S@QSTOÄ Global Program (SGP). With the theme of “Innovation for Tomorrow,” SGDÄ&@Q@FD Ä/@UHKHNMÄED@STQDRÄ@ÄTMHPTDÄCDRHFMÄ this year under the concept of marine imagery to show people’s respect for the ocean — the cradle of life. It also symbolizes the importance of marine ecology and conservation. According to the organizers, more than 40,000 international buyers are expected to make use of the trading platform provided by COMPUTEX TAIPEI to look for business and partnership opportunities during the event. The 30 startups are scheduled to have over 140 intensive, one-on-one meetings with 28 KD@CHMFÄBNLO@MHDRÄ@MCÄUDMSTQDÄB@OHS@KÄÆQLR Ä including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Delta Electronics Inc., Quanta Computer Inc., Wistron Corp., Advantech Co., MediaTek Inc., Acer Inc., Auto21, AU Optronics Corp., Logitech International SA and CDIB Capital International. In addition to meeting decision makers from those companies for possible business cooperation, investment, partnership or market development opportunities, representatives of the 30 startups are also using the opportunity at COMPUTEX TAIPEI to visit various booths related to their businesses and to share new concepts and trends with others.

Many of the startups attending the event this year come from different regions, such as Israel, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Italy, Hong Kong and Taiwan. They were selected through Epoch’s SGP — which is in its eighth year — under the strict criteria that they need to be highly marketable in their industry and skilled in solving technology problems. Chosen because of their trend-setting and innovative business models, these startups are considered capable of integrating with Taiwan’s industry and likely to break into the global market at the same time. Since 2015, SGP — held twice a year — has received over 1,200 applications from 63 countries. So far, 108 international startups have been selected and one-third of them have established collaborations with Taiwan’s leading corporations, attracted investment or set up branches in Taiwan through the Epoch Foundation’s connections. More than 10 international startups set up

branches in Taiwan after joining the program, including Lucid VR Inc., Verdigris Technologies Inc. and PlayDate Inc. One of the successful cases is Sorama, which supplies unique high-resolution sound cameras and noise and vibration control services. The Dutch company, which joined the SPG in 2016, has collaborated with more than 10 Taiwanese enterprises and has acquired a market presence in Taiwan and Japan. Just in April, Sorama set up a business partnership with Fluke Corp. to detect compressed air leaks, making it a great example of how Taiwan can serve as Asia’s hub for global startups to make the leap into the Asian market.

Meet the startups Meanwhile, US-based Verdigris Technologies is among the 30 startups taking part in COMPUTEX TAIPEI this year. Its AI-based IoT energy sensor for critical buildings has been used to identify more than 50% savings on energy costs while providing valuable insights to predict downtime and equipment failure. Clients include Jabil Inc.,

Smart Retail & Business Solutions

Don’t miss Smart Retail solutions for your business at COMPUTEX

To help corporations and retailers cut costs and boost efficiency, one section of COMPUTEX 2019 has been set aside to display point of sale (POS) solutions. Dozens of POS suppliers are displaying their products at the Smart Retail & Business Solutions @QD@ÄNMÄSGDÄENTQSGÄÇNNQÄNEÄSGDÄ-@MF@MFÄ$WGHAHSHNMÄ Center, Hall 2, attracting many international visitors who are asking questions and checking prices. A growing trend in POS is to combine computers, facial recognition, and IoT in venues such as shops, supermarkets, restaurants and hotels so that customers can select goods and make payments by interacting with the POS equipment. At the POS section of COMPUTEX, the biggest booth is that of Shanghai Sunmi Technology Co. Ltd., which manufactures IoT devices but is perhaps best known for its facial-recognition technology.

“We combine facial recognition with Alipay, so that when Alipay members go out without carrying a card and want to buy something or pay for a service, they only have to show their face,” Sunmi Brand and Design Director Hu Xiaowei, said. To make sure visitors know when and where they can use facial recognition with Alipay, their booth has an LCD monitor wall, as large as a cinema screen, displaying a supermarket, library and other scenes at regular intervals.

structure and sleek POS equipment in mostly white and dark frames. “POSBANK is the No. 1 POS manufacturer in South Korea. We mainly produce hardware, and customers can add or change the content,” said Christina Chou, POSBANK’s global sales manager. POSBANK sells several kinds of POS terminals, including the sturdy BOXPOS, as well as POS printers and POS touchscreens that can be placed on counters or hung on walls.

In addition to Sunmi, South Korea’s POSBANK Co. Ltd. is promoting its POS equipment at COMPUTEX 2019.

Many foreign visitors stopped at POSBANK’s booth, asking questions and taking photos.

An air of quiet elegance surrounds POSBANK’s booth, which features a white and light-blue

but also to cut manpower costs. One Taiwanese company, Netronix Inc., sells electronic product labels so that stores and supermarkets do not have to put up new labels when goods come in or remove labels when goods sell out. Their electronic labels are hard to sell in Taiwan but easier to sell in Europe, because manpower is more expensive in Europe than in Taiwan. 3GDÄK@ADKRÄBNLDÄHMÄÆUDÄRHYDR Ä@MCÄSGDHQÄBNMSDMSRÄ can be changed by computer, even wirelessly. “Electronic labels are more expensive than paper labels because they are made with e-paper ... but it holds great future,” said Sean Huang, senior specialist at Netronix’s sales department. “At department stores and supermarkets, fresh products like fruits and vegetables only have a week’s shelf live. After that you have to cut price and then stop selling them. So, staff members are busy putting up labels and removing them. This is not only a waste of manpower, a waste of time, but also causes environmental

pollution,” he said. “This is especially important for Japan, which faces a serious problem of an aging population,” he added. While POS is generally associated with cashiers, checkouts and self-ordering or self-service kiosks, it can also be smartly applied to a bakery. The POS system made by one Taiwan company makes it easier for a customer to make purchases at a bakery. The customer picks up the bread or cakes he or she wants to buy, puts the tray under a POS terminal to identify the purchase and show the total price, and then pays the bill.

“When a cashier charges a customer, the cashier taps the names of the purchased goods on the screen of the cashier machine and sometimes makes mistakes. When the POS checks the bread and cakes on a tray and gives the tally, the accuracy is 97 percent correct,” the manufacturer said. The POS section at COMPUTEX shows systems primarily from Taiwan and China, and that is what lures foreign visitors to COMPUTEX. “COMPUTEX offers a wide range of products from Taiwan and China at competitive prices. I like it very much and have been attending COMPUTEX for several years,” said Ayush Sanghvi, a buyer from Mumbai, India.
