AIoT
Experts discuss how combining AI and IoT is creating massive opportunities, but acknowledge security problems as well
— a convergence of technologies opening up new possibilities This year’s COMPUTEX Forum, themed Pervasive Intelligence, concluded on Wednesday afternoon with the AIoT Session at the Taipei International Conference Center. The final panel of the forum featured six distinguished speakers from global industry leaders discussing the latest developments in artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT). “COMPUTEX is not just a sourcing platform, not just for procurement, it’s also for building a global technology ecosystem… Today, AI and IoT is very important,” said Walter Yeh, CEO and president of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council, organizer of the forum, before introducing the first panelist: Joe Jensen, vice president of the Internet of Things Group and general manager of Retail, Banking, Hospitality and Education at Intel. “Over 20 years now I’ve been coming to COMPUTEX and I’ve built some tremendous partnerships and relationships with many of the leaders in this room. Our business has grown tremendously, and I think it’s grown together. We face now and will talk today [about] really doubling or more the opportunity we’ve all thought of as the future,” Jensen said.

"Vulnerability Management in a Connected World."
“It’s a massive new and large and growing [field],” Jensen said. “If you go step back two or three years ago, the analysts were thinking IoT is all about some little things … billions of things generating data, spewing this data to the cloud and the analytics being done in the cloud.”
“We now realize, and the industry realizes, that IoT, especially IoT for business and for business insight and value, is really about unleashing computer vision and advanced AI technologies against large, massive sets of realtime data being generated at the edge,” he said. “These data sets are so large we’re not going

to have the ability to send all that data to the cloud for analytics and processing.” “A huge amount of those insights will be generated live real time at the edge, and that creates the opportunity for us in IoT and the edge,” he added, describing how devices, such as sensors, will pool that data and process it at the edge, before sending the insights from that data back into industry processes and the cloud. He highlighted three vertical markets being transformed by computer vision and AI: retail, smart cities and industrial. These markets have been increasingly employing sensors to create a massive amount of data, which are then used to improve efficiency and safety. “There are over two million factories in China alone with no data, no analytics and really no computational infrastructure whatsoever,” Jensen said. “Think about the opportunity to go bring analytics and data to improve the efficiency and operation of those two million factories.” “We can’t do this alone… It takes the entire ecosystem for us to bring this value to market,” he said, adding that another objective is to help customers scale faster, with market-ready solutions instead of one-off engineer products. On the other side of the equation, those enormous opportunities can create a security nightmare. Mike Gibson, vice president of Threat and Vulnerability Research at Trend Micro, said that the biggest issue that keeps him up at night is IoT security, particularly three challenges: The discovery of new vulnerabilities, being able to establish relationships with vendors to disclose vulnerabilities and then implementing remediation.
Attendees try out the latest in facial recognition technology on the show floor.
He defined a vulnerability as “a way for somebody to leverage or use a system in a way that wasn’t originally intended.” A growing number of software companies are actively looking for vulnerabilities — for example, through bug bounty programs — and more is also being done as a community, Gibson said, but he added that many vendors, particularly smaller firms, remain reticent to work with security experts to fix problems. Another principal challenge is that managing security over a massive amount of connected devices is difficult and nearly unmanageable, he said. Meanwhile, some industries, particularly manufacturing and medical, are particularly vulnerable because they often have to balance downtime of critical equipment caused by maintenance, including security updates, with productivity and efficiency, he
added. Gibson also highlighted the real-world impact of IoT security, including the rising threats of botnets, destructive malware and ransomware, saying that luckily, for the moment, these challenges are manageable. Technologies like AI could provide bad actors with a tool to further exploit and profit from vulnerabilities, he added. “I think we’re going to see some interesting attacks,” Gibson said, but added: “I don’t think, at this point, the bad guys have really figured out how to monetize exploitation of connected devices.” He issued recommendations for manufacturers, such as leveraging the free energy of the security research community and ensuring that products are updated, while recommending that consumers do their due diligence.

SmarTEX
COMPUTEX 2019 SmarTEX
AIoT thrives at every scale in Taiwan A distinctive feature of the SmarTEX exhibition (Nangang Exhibition Center, Hall 2, 4th floor) at COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2019 is its focus on well-made devices and systems that demonstrate real-world IoT innovation and cross-domain applications. While some tech shows highlight computergenerated renderings of products just over the horizon, SmarTEX highlights current products
at the leading edge of development. Last year’s SmarTEX examined local development of AIoT, with local firms such as J-Mex building smart sensors into its BikeSpark auto-sensing rear light, and Honeywld Technology Company providing nonintrusive health care to elderly patients with a network of connected devices. This year’s exhibition digs more deeply into today’s most significant ICT trends: AI Services & Robotics, Wearable & Healthcare Tech, Smart Transportation, Smart Home, and Smart Tech Solutions. Embedded AI solutions developer AAEON presents its intelligent street light, a Smart City solution that adapts to changing weather and traffic conditions to ensure the most efficient use of resources, saving cities both time and money. It also automatically reports malfunctions and enables simple, web-based remote management. By combining data collection and AI-driven cloud computing, AAEON’s lighting system improves energy efficiency, reduces maintenance, and lowers carbon emissions.

Vehicle tracking firm Traceez miniaturized its smart transportation technology into its new iCar Slim, which brings the antitheft and geofence protections of its iCar Defender and iCar buddy to a cellphone-sized form factor that can fit under a bike seat. The automatic alarms can alert the user in seconds when the bike or scooter is disturbed. The real-time Lightning function tells users where the vehicle is every five seconds for up to a minute, making it easier for authorities to locate thieves. Consumer electronics developer LoongYee is demonstrating its Aurora Smart Plug, which enables one-touch control of household appliances via IOS and Android smartphone apps. Users can control devices with a timer or an on-off button and monitor their smart home’s energy consumption with a power meter. IoT device developer Full Enterprise Corp. is showing off its Smart Life system, which brings together scheduling functions, powered curtains, power sockets, timers and a multimedia panel to automate all aspects of a Smart Home. Security functions include power locks, a warning siren and multiple sensors, to ensure the safety of the

user’s smart home when they aren’t present. Thermostat control is also available. Leadtek Research Inc., an AI solutions developer, has upgraded its range of solutions this year, focusing on smart manufacturing, smart health care and health ecosystems, presenting a wide array of top AI solutions, VDI products, professional graphics cards, eSports graphics cards and 8K glasses. This year, it is focusing on its updated, upgraded WinFast RTX Data Science Workstation series. Designed for AI, data analysis, machine learning and deep learning, the systems utilize the NVIDIA Turing-based Quadro RTX GPU. The workstations are suitable for conducting natural language processing and image/voice recognition. The Taiwan Textile Research Institute has developed fabrics that monitor the stress levels
of wearers and increased its investment in a smart textile laboratory to enable further innovation in textile processing and smart fabrics. The developments combine the smart health care and wearable domains, with the Taiwan Textile Research Institute creating smart sportswear and even a stress-detecting bra for women. Also in the smart health care domain, CloudMed is demonstrating its iCARE 8-in-1 health monitoring device, which combines sensors to observe and record a wide range of measurements in about
a minute. Controlled by an app, the device tracks results over time, which are stored in the cloud, enabling users to share info with health care providers and helping them to improve their diet and exercise regimens. The TourTalk web service brings a bit of humanity to a widespread problem: visitors who cannot speak the local language interacting with shop owners, health workers, and other officials. Online travel concierges translate for users in a way that exceeds services based on machine translation, while adding value with personal recommendations for sites to visit and nightlife activities, when requested. Across several domains of AIoT, developers and manufacturers are using SmarTEX to highlight their shared commitment to innovation and to solving problems for customers, be they cities or individuals.

Leading tech companies from Azerbaijan, Egypt and Romania have smart tech, green tech, IoT, gaming and other ICT items high on their purchase lists as they join the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) delegation, in a business matching trip to Taipei where the world’s second largest ITC show, COMPUTEX 2019, is being held. Delegates of these companies -- like their counterparts from other European countries that have come with the EBRD delegation for the event -- are targeting big-name companies like Acer and Advantech and for prospective partnerships and other business opportunities during their visit to Taipei. Having attended COMPUTEX TAIPEI three times already, Emin Guliyev, general manager of DiVi, is more excited about the business matchmaking meetings. As one of the biggest and fast-growing distribution companies in Azerbaijan, DiVi distributes electronic equipment from such well-known brands as Epson, Acer, Canon and Kingston. This time, Guliyev is focusing on gaming products and smart city technologies. He hopes to refresh relationships with existing business partners, as well as expand into new markets for smart home solutions and IoT products. As the gaming industry is booming in Azerbaijan, and as Taiwan is a leader in this

industry, Guliyev said he is eyeing innovative gaming products at this year's procurement meetings. As for smart city applications, Guliyev said: “Since our capital city Baku is almost the same size as Taipei, [Taipei serves as] a great model for us to build a smart city.” While Guliyev’s company is targeting gaming and smart city solutions, Egypt-based electronics wholesaler, Uni Group is looking for cooperation in the area of IoT. “We need to take the preemptive opportunities because it’s a potential industry in Egypt,” CEO Abd AlMoniem Khawaga said. His company is expanding and has a head start in the IoT market. Although his company maintains good partnerships with Chinese suppliers whose prices are relatively cheaper, Khawaga said he attaches importance to the strength of the ICT industry in Taiwan, which produces products of reliable quality. “The mobile phone industry in China is stronger [but] Taiwan is way ahead in IoT products and smart city solutions,” Tamer Abdenaby Aglan, IT consultant of Uni Group, said. Another EBRD delegate eyeing IoT products and smart devices is BIT Software, a Romaniabased company offering cloud business software. Since BIT focuses on precision agriculture, it is seeking hardware such as GPS sensors, monitoring devices and tracking devices to enhance the
development of smart farming systems. With green energy growing in Romania, BIT general manager Remus Cazacu has highlighted smart greenhouse sensors as his main target during this visit. Having built strong partnerships with ICT industry leaders like Microsoft, Oracle, Google and Amazon, Cazacu aims to find IoT sensor hardware so as to boost BIT's cloud computing software. He listed Advantech as a potential partner during the procurement meetings. The EBRD delegation is one of the prominent international groups participating in COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2019. This year, it led 24 specially selected ICT companies from 10 European countries to attend the event. The EBRD is assisting its members in seeking Taiwanese partners as prime vendors.

Startup Matchmaking
InnoVEX 2019 matchmaking
Helping global startups find advantanges in Taiwan Exploring the possibility of establishing both lucrative and reliable relationships, international and local investors, accelerators and incubators met through one-on-one meetings set up on Thursday for global innovative startups at InnoVEX 2019. The event held at Taipei World Trade Center, Hall 1, saw startups demonstrating and illustrating their business goals and plans, while venture capitalists made use of the InnoVEX startup platform to listen to and evaluate the deals they would potentially strike. Manjushree Technopack Limited is a company in India specializing in healthcare technology, Industry 4.0, and IoT products and devices. “I’m here to explore what is happening in the Taiwanese, Korean and Japanese markets in terms of healthcare, medical, and IoT products,” company director Rajat Kedia said. As an investor he hoped to understand the current state of technology, and whether anyone was willing to bring the technology to India, he said. “I’m wanting to see what kind of technologies would be worth bringing back to India.” Kedia said he was impressed by how well the technology industry in Taiwan functions. “In fact, I have been at the COMPUTEX show for two days, it’s quite advanced especially for computer hardware, I’m not transacting any business immediately. I’m looking at longterm solutions and what we can do with all the startups, and all the software industry,” he said. Manager of the CTBC Venture Capital, Karen Fan, talked to three startups during the 90 minutes session. She felt impressed by how entrepreneurs were increasingly moving into

the cultural and creative industry, she said. “Like internet celebrities who combine new technologies with media. However, some of them are still at their early stages. We want something that is more mature and has great potential for the market.” Karen is very interested in one startup that enabled all earphones, even low-end ones, to create surround sound effects simply by adding one device. “First of all, the 15 minutes session [face-toface communicating with startups] is informative. I found one very interesting company that we will stay in touch [with]. They are cooperating with Viber, I will try to help them to do some project connections both in Israel and in the South American markets,” Javier Shocron, associate from Maverick Ventures said. very active and crowded field in Israel, he said. “Where will the banking industry be in the next 10 or 15 years, I think we will discover for ourselves and there is no need to wait for that long.” One problem is that e-payments are not globally accepted yet, and in come countries the infrastructure doesn’t support it, he said. Fintech startups need to solve such problems. “We already have a couple of partners here, we‘re always looking for new investment opportunites and I think we found some interesting companies but we have to do much more due diligence to understand the technology and potential,” OurCrowd manging partner Denes Ban said. Startups are focused more on the problem than on solutions, he said. “The major challenge for them will be — they have some cool gadgets but actually it’s not the major problem — is there a need, is it going to be a need? That’s where the future lies.”

ZOTAC CUP
Fight for glory and honor, win for charity — ZOTAC CUP at COMPUTEX Global gaming platform ZOTAC CUP has returned to COMPUTEX and is fighting for a cause this year with the ZOTAC CUP Fight for Charity League of Legends Tournament. In the Grand Finals, five finalists are to face five international influencers in a “League of Legends” competition to decide to which charity the lion’s share of the US$100,000 charity prize pool will go. The competition is supporting five international charitable organizations to help those in need: the Esports Foundation, Gaming-Aid, the MakeA-Wish foundation, MERCY Malaysia and the Oaktree Foundation.
Online qualifiers for Asia, Europe and the Americas each produced three winners, who faced off with six local influencers — MMD, Eggroll, 7Z, WeiWei, Toyz and Gear — in the semifinals on May 28-29 at ZOTAC’s booth (M0820) at Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center, Hall 1. On Thursday, May 30, the Grand Finals began with the five victors of the semifinals facing five international influencers — Voyboy, Kaypea, CooLifeGame, Zong Guan and Hao Kai — in 5v5 Howling Abyss, 5v5 Summoner’s Rift and several round-of-8 1v1 matches. In the initial best-of-three, blind-pick Howling Abyss series, Team ZOTAC came out swinging and quickly demonstrated their dominance over the competition with two decisive wins, despite having to overcome a language barrier. The action continues on Friday from 11:00 am with round two of 5v5 Howling Abyss, followed by round two of Summoner’s Rift, two rounds of 3v3 Twisted Treeline and the 1v1 semifinals. The tournament ends on
Saturday, starting at 11:00 am with the 1v1 finals, followed by two rounds of 5v5 Summoner’s Rift early in the afternoon. For those unable to see the Grand Finals in person, they will be live-streamed on the ZOTAC CUP Twitch channel, with English commentating by Jake “Spawn” Tiberi, Matthew “Fish” Stewart and Rikki “Riku” Quiapon, while Scott and Jwell will be the Chinese casters. ZOTAC is providing the official gaming platform for the tournament: the MEK MINI. A diminutive gaming PC that packs a big punch, the MEK MINI is powered by a ZOTAC GAMING GeForce RTX 2070 graphics card and an Intel Core processor. Other official competition hardware includes ZOTAC GAMING’s Cougar Armor S Gaming Chair; Logitech G headsets, keyboards, mice and webcams; and a gaming monitor by Viewsonic. The MEK MINI is on display at ZOTAC’s booth, which features the firm’s latest products, including the new ZBOX MI553B, an ideal solution for the broadcasting sector powered by an Intel Core processor, with video capture functionality provided by an Avermedia M.2 capture card.

Gaming Trends
Latest gaming hardware advances give the killing edge a personal touch Gaming has long been a staple of the COMPUTEX experience and this year was no exception, with heavyweights bringing their best, brightest and most extreme products catering to the burgeoning industry to Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center, Hall 1. Perhaps the biggest non-performance-related trend among gaming industry exhibitors this year is personalization, particularly in lighting. From start to finish, nearly all of the booths — some massive and more elaborate than ever before — are highlighting the customizability of their products. The explosive growth of affordable and flexible LED lighting solutions is readily apparent at COMPUTEX this year. Whether it is modular cases and components from Thermaltake — whose massive stand features a row of systems crafted by some of the world’s top modders,
14
as well as its d&i award-winning Level 20 GT ARGB case and its height-adjustable RGB Gaming Desk — or ZOTAC GAMING’s MEK MINI, which crams some of the most powerful hardware into one of the world’s smallest gaming boxes, LED lighting is present in all its glory and more refined than ever, giving gamers billions of possible combinations to express their personality in their hardware. ZOTAC, which this year has again co-organized a ZOTAC CUP event featuring top players from around the world competing for charity, has a full range of gaming products on display at its booth, including the latest in Nvidia GeForce RTX graphics cards and the latest incarnation of its ZBOX streaming mini PC, which is powered by an Intel processor and is equipped with an Avermedia M.2 capture card with native 4K support and powerful livestreaming software.
Of course, the gaming industry is about more than just a lot of flash, and extreme performance continues to retain its primary importance, although in more ways than just raw processing power. Alongside the cutting-edge systems, powered by both Intel and AMD’s most recent debuts; world record-breaking, liquid-cooled (and RGB-lit) high-performance memory modules; and the latest in graphics cards, like the d&i award-winning ROG Matrix GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, gaming displays have again returned to the forefront of performance innovation. Local heavyweight ASUS has a massive Republic of Gamers booth across the isle from its main pavilion that it has packed not only with an impressive array of powerful gaming systems but also with the bleeding edge in display technology. In addition to standalone displays for desktops, the firm also announced its ROG
Gaming Trends
innovative designs, both desktops and laptops are getting slimmer, lighter and more efficient, meaning all that power is even more portable than before.
Strix SCAR III and Hero III gaming laptops with 240 hz panels promising true high-FPS gameplay with smooth and crisp visuals. Of course, such impressive specifications can be applied to areas other than gaming, including productivity. Most manufacturers have at least one product with factory calibration to the sRGB or AdobeRGB color spaces or a Pantone Validated palette. And due to advances in semiconductor process technology alongside
MSI, in particular, has taken things one step further, bringing renowned creators from around the world to showcase the performance of their gaming systems and how they can be used to replace traditional workstation setups. The power to both play and work hard is definitely becoming a major attraction for consumers. No gaming setup is truly complete without peripherals. As evidenced by the explosive growth in e-sports, gamers know that having the right
tools for the job can be the difference between virtual victory and defeat. From improved ergonomics to reduce the physical toll of extreme competition to performance improvements that provide a competitive edge through lower latency and wireless freedom, every need imaginable for gamers has been answered by the industry. One of the most notable examples of how these needs are being met is the Cooler Master ControlPad, the world’s first PC keypad with pressure-sensitive mechanical keys for the most refined, nuanced control possible. The Kickstarter-funded project also provides a plethora of programming options, meaning its applications go far beyond gaming.
