NEW HORIZON THREATS Russia has revealed the identities of two suicide bombers who struck just a few days after Christmas in the city of Volgograd. The targets - Volgograd Metro Station and a packed commuter trolley bus were selected by the notorious Doku Umarov. He has been dubbed ‘Russia’s Bin-Laden’ and is the leader of a powerful Chechen terrorist group. A little over two weeks later, a video emerged on a web site that supports his group. It contained a film clip of two young men threatening a “major surprise” to those who have waited excitedly to attend the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. At the end of the tape - scenes of the Volgograd bombings were played - suggesting it was these two thugs who killed 34 residents and security staff. In this edition of Eye Spy we have a major feature not only on the attacks, which include some interesting photographs, but also take a look at the most significant incidents of the last two decades which have plagued Russia. A developing situation which has attracted the interest of intelligence watchers is happening in the South China Seas. Beijing has just created an Air Defence Zone over islands controlled by Japan. America’s response was to fly two B-52s straight through the claimed island airspace. Japan’s premier announced a massive increase in its military forces and there is a great deal of tension in the region. The CIA is concerned that a secret war could soon turn very public. Our writers examine the back story to events and look at a number of other air and maritime operations plus several hair-raising incidents - any one of which could ignite military action between the super powers. If the CIA’s Far Asian Desk has its hands full in the South China Seas, Langley’s Middle Eastern Desk staff must be burning the midnight oil and earning lots of overtime. Events in Iran, Syria, Egypt Libya and various north African countries, continue to be monitored, all for different reasons. And it against this backdrop that Eye Spy presents an informative feature of thirty years of CIA-Iran spy games and operations. We also have an interesting sidebar on MI6, and how it seems certain Tehran’s spy agency MOIS (Ministry of Information and Security), benefited when police simply allowed thousands of people to storm the British Embassy a little over two years ago. Eye Spy has identified the group which led the attack - and who controls it. For those interested in classic spy stories, we take an indepth look at the reasons behind the British Government’s refusal to release a batch of documents on the so-called Profumo Affair of the early 1960s. John Profumo was the then Minister of State for War. He started having an affair with a London socialite who just happened to be dating a Russian intelligence officer as well. In the middle of the case, London osteopath Stephen Ward whose client list must have been the most envied in the world. He would later commit suicide - though evidence is emerging that could change that assumption. It is a brilliant study - evidence indeed that London has decided to save the blushes of many famous people - much to the despair of intelligence historians who were expecting the release of the papers in January 2014 - these won’t appear now until 2064. Another mystery that continues to haunt one American family concerns Robert Levinson - the former FBI agent who disappeared on the Iranian island of Kish. It has now transpired he was in the pay of the CIA. But what of his mission in 2007? Eye Spy investigates and comes up with some interesting information. Edward Snowden remains in the news. The disgraced NSA contractor has been busy plotting his latest side swipe at his former employer. Eye Spy looks at the programmes revealed by Snowden, especially those on the interception of diplomatic communications. Surprisingly, there are no surprises. We also have news of a controversial Mossad operation that may or may not have taken place. Either way, it has already pricked the ears of Interpol and legal officials. These are just some of the highlights in this edition.
