2009: Scottish Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill announces Al-Megrahi is to be released on “compassionate grounds”. On 20 August, he flies back home to a heroes welcome and is greeted by Colonel Gaddafi

2008: The UK media seizes on a meeting between Labour ‘king pin’ Peter Mandelson (right) and Colonel Gaddafi’s son Saif al-Islam on a yacht. It is understood the case of Al-Megrahi was discussed (among other issues) 2007: On Tony Blair’s ‘farewell tour of Africa’, he meets with Gaddafi in the Libyan desert. BP signs an enormous deal that gives the company permission to explore the country’s coastal waters for oil 2004: USA lifts sanctions against Libya after Gaddafi complies with a whole range of proposals

1972: The Mossad suspect Libya of providing financial support for the Black September outfit which perpetrated the Munich Olympic massacre. The JSO is also believed to have given money and safe passage to the notorious ‘Carlos the Jackal’ 1979: CIA NIE (intel assessment) notes Libyan JSO intelligence network enlarged to cover all continents. Agency is particularly active in Europe monitoring Libyan exiles and dissidents 1980: MI6 tracks Tripoli-Ireland (north and south) IRA weapons pipeline. 1981: Spy games between CIA and JSO widespread as Washington increases pressure on Libya for its support of terrorism. Two Libyan Russianbuilt Sukhoi SU-22 warplanes shot down by US F-14 Tomcats over the Gulf of Sidra, Mediterranean Sea, a region claimed by Libya 1983: In London, MI5 suspect JSO agents build and provide the bomb which exploded near the Harrods store on Hans Crescent, killing six people, including three police officers. 2010: The Daily Mail of 5 June reports that Gaddafi’s son, Saif alIslam, said Tony Blair has “become an advisor to Libya’s state fund which manages the country’s oil wealth”. Islam Gaddafi described the former premier as a “personal friend of the family” and that he has been to Libya and stayed with Colonel Gaddafi, many times. The claim was dismissed by Blair associates

1984: Gaddafi unconcerned but annoyed that the UK allows Libyan dissidents to protest outside its embassy in St James’s Square. The protest was organised by a group upset that Gaddafi had ordered the execution of two young students who had criticised him. A JSO agent inside the building shoots at patrolling police officers. President Reagan briefs politicians and senior WPC Evonne Fletcher is killed. An 11-day stand-off ensues, White House officials just days before the Libyan raids. 1986: JSO-backed operatives place a bomb in West Berlin’s popular La Bella discotheque killing two US servicemen and a civilian. The club was chosen because it was popular with US military personnel. Though the loss of life was minimal, a further 200 people were dreadfully injured by shrapnel. Within hours, President Reagan blamed the JSO, this after the NSA intercepted a phone call from agents in Berlin to their superiors in Tripoli. “Colonel Gaddafi personally authorised the attack,” according to the CIA
