Get Off the Beaten Path

Too many Acadia National Park tourists stay on the Park Loop Road. True outdoor adventurers choose the carriage roads instead. Thanks to John D. Rockefeller Jr., Acadia has 57 miles of wooded, historic carriage roads to ramble on. Head to Hulls Cove Visitor Center for a map of these lesser-used paths. You can make finding the 17 arched stone bridges a scavenger hunt. Cars aren’t allowed, but feel free to hike or bike. During winter, you could cross-country ski or snowshoe. Stop at Wildwood Stables for an authentic carriage road experience. Chartered horsedrawn carriage rides are available from May to October. The longest rides are four hours and include a glimpse of Great Cranberry Island. Is it raining on your Acadia National Park visit? Don’t worry because there are indoor activities. Drive your car up the Park Loop Road to Cadillac Mountain instead of hiking. Learn about Native American history in the Abbe Museum. Tour the Nature Center adjacent to Sieur de Monts Spring. Sample the local favorite, popovers, at the Jordan Pond House. See a show at the nearby 1932 Criterion Theatre. Get a relaxing massage at Tree of Life Day Spa. Throw back a cold one at the Atlantic Brewing Company. Bar Harbor is the perfect New England destination. Come back explore Acadia National Park when the sun is out.
