Guide to Milwaukee Area’s Clinton Street Antiques/Annex Antiques–
Celebrating 25 Years
On Oct. 22nd, 2017 Clinton Street Antiques/Clinton Street Annex Antiques in Milwaukee will celebrate 25 years of business. The store at 1110 S. 1st Street used a historical reference to the original street name when they opened in what had been most recently a laundromat. The building built in 1900 as a neighborhood bakery has had many uses in it’s 117 year existence including a rooming house that have left multiple scars inside and out. When Curt Peck and Doug Quigley decided to join others in the antique trade and go from renting space in area malls and open a brick and mortar store in Walker’s point, they undid much of the remodeling that had been decades in the making. What is a hip and upcoming area now, in 1992 was a desolate former hub of industry, with low rents and high crime. An attempt at cheerful curb appeal and a constant revolving stock of unusual merchandise paid off as customers found and returned to Clinton Street as a regular stop. As time went by, the desirability of certain genres and items changed, an ongoing effort is made to stay in tune with changing demographics. In 2014, Clinton Street opened an annex in the neighboring 1891 storefront that had been built as a men’s hat and shoe store. The addition of 1,300-square-feet was used to market industrial relics and furnishings that are souvenirs of the area’s rust-belt past. The stores have had the honor of being pictured and detailed in numerous magazines such as Milwaukee Home and Garden, Milwaukee Magazine, Coca Cola digest, Milwaukee Journal, many covers of Wisconsin Country Life, Shepard Express as well as winning WISN AList “best of” several years in a row. When you visit Clinton Street Antiques/ Clinton Street Annex Antiques, you are also visiting a vestige of 19th century Milwaukee as some of the best antiques are our older architecture, and you are also joining multiple generations that have carried antiques from this shop to their homes far and wide. Clinton Street and Annex Antiques are located right next door to each other at 1110, and 1106 South First Street, In the Walkers Point area of Milwaukee, WI. Curt or Doug can be reached at 414-732-6371 or 414-202-4241.

Everyone loves to visit The Elegant Farmer each fall to pick apples during its Autumn Harvest Fest
The Elegant Farmer’s award-winning Apple Pie Baked in a Paper Bag®
Simply the Best
The Elegant Farmer Greeted by the huge smile of the Smilin’ Barn in Mukwonago, Wisconsin, a visit to The Elegant Farmer is a step back to a simpler time with its family fun events, small town charm and simply the best specialty foods. Noted by Gourmet, Food Network and the Wall Street Journal as having the best pie in America, The Elegant Farmer’s Apple Pie Baked in a Paper Bag® has been making its signature item right here in Southeast Wisconsin for more than 25 years. The Farm Kitchen Bakery bakes over a quarter of a million pies per year and ships them all over the nation through its website www.elegantfarmer.com and wholesale distribution to more than 200 locations throughout Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan. The signature pie uses the brown paper bag in its cooking method to first steam the apples piled high over a traditional pie crust and then baked with a special sugar cookie-like top crust. This winning combination and unique cooking style leave the apples crisp and the crust are irresistible. “The pie is what we are known for,” tells owner John Bauer. “It has become a tradition for holidays, birthday and an everyday dessert favorite with our loyal fans. We are proud of all the awards we have received and the smiling faces we greet each day in the market from the people that love our pies and all our other specialty food items. Simply the Best isn’t just a phrase we use to describe our foods, it is what we strive for every day.” Other specialty items that were developed and now make up their signature group of items include CiderBaked Ham®, Fruity Applesauces, Fruit Crisps, Jumbo Muffins & Cookies, Fruit Breads, Gourmet Sauces & Seasonings, Blue Ribbon Cheeses and Old Fashioned Gourmet Popcorn. When you visit the Elegant Farmer you can enjoy homemade breakfast or lunch items from the Farm Kitchen Deli. This diverse menu includes handcrafted soups, brats, sandwiches and desserts. New for The Elegant Farmer are their two breakfast sandwiches along with a traditional Old World Cuban sandwich. The weekend favorite is the Elegant Farmer’s WISCONSIN COUNTRY LIFE

Taste of Country Life
Go Ahead…Eat The Whole Watermelon Sliced or diced, grilled or blended, there are countless ways to prepare watermelon. With some fruits, half or more is wasted when you throw away the seeds and peel, but you may be surprised to learn that you can use an entire watermelon, including the rind, to make delicious and refreshing dishes. Most people think of watermelon as a sweet, juicy snack perfect for hot summer days, but with its high water content (92 percent), the fruit is more than just tasty. It’s also an ideal way to keep your body hydrated. What’s more, the ability to use the entire fruit makes watermelon one of the most versatile and value-conscious options in the produce department.
An average watermelon consists of about 70 percent fruit and 30 percent rind. Hollowed out, the rind is an attractive way to serve any number of recipes, but the rind is actually edible, too, and can be stir-fried, stewed or pickled, or even enjoyed raw. This yummy slaw gets its distinctive crunch from the watermelon rind, which is packed with citrulline and arginine, two compounds that may aid in healthy blood flow. Watermelon is also a flavorful substitute for tomatoes, as shown in this traditional Italian appetizer, and contains higher levels of lycopene than any other fresh fruit or vegetable per serving, according to awardwinning nutrition author and registered dietitian Elizabeth Somer.
Additionally, it lends some sweetness to a spicy salsa and a refreshing twist on a summery salad. You can also try blending watermelon with other fresh fruits for a super smoothie or mixing it up with some adult libations (and don’t forget, you can transform the rind into a mini-keg in minutes; just add a pour spout). Find more ideas for using every bite of fruit, juice and rind at watermelon.org.
