CONCEPT AND TASK THE AIM A chair for the senses. S贸ley. The object in the object. True works of art have one primary function: to delight the senses. Many people use them to enhance a room. Not only with pictures or sculptures. Items of furniture are just as desirable, their uniqueness making them objects in an object. Kusch + Co is awakening one such work of art from its hibernation: the object chair S贸ley, design icon and award-winning classic of the 80s. It is being relaunched, and is once more creating a stir.

CONCEPT AND TASK THE IDEA Sóley repositioned. As an art object that enhances a room. Sóley is back. To see it is to want it! • As the reflection of exclusive standards. • As the expression of good taste. • As an attractive eye-catcher. • As progressive seating. • As a space-saving folding chair to bring in when needed.

FORM AND CHARACTER THE NAME Sóley – the sunshine island. Literally translated from the Icelandic. It began in 1983, when the young Icelandic architect Valdimar Harðarson visited a Kusch + Co trade fair stand and suggested bringing out a chair together. When Dieter Kusch asked about the first designs, the prompt reply was, "I have the chair with me, hanging over my shoulders – it’s a folding chair." One year later, the Icelandic architect’s design came true. Valdimar Harðarson named the chair after his little daughter: Sóley, which translates literally as sunshine island. To match the design of the chair, which is as round as the sun and corresponds with the sickleshaped backrest.

FORM AND CHARACTER THE AREAS OF USE S贸ley gives a room character. Accentuated and unique. S贸ley is used whenever a room still needs something special. Something beautiful. An effective accent. A discerning touch of colour. A unique stylistic device. That is why S贸ley is practically predestined for exclusive office and administrative buildings, for avant-garde hotels, caf茅s and bistros, modern museums and galleries, exclusive agency premises, private clinics, residences and timelessly young living concepts.

FORM AND CHARACTER THE DESIGNER Valdimar Harðarson. Architect and designer from Reykjavik. The architect Valdimar Harðarson, who is also much appreciated for his involvement in Reykjavík’s urban planning, has received several awards for his designs of public buildings. In the early 80s he was also the recipient of various special awards for seating furniture for the Sóley chair developed for Kusch + Co. Sóley received the Roscoe Award in the USA, two Good Design awards from Japan, was "Furniture of the Year" in 1984, and also received an award from the Design-Center Stuttgart. In 2012, the folding chair was once again back in the limelight – at Milan Design Week and the Superstudio Piú. There, Sóley received standing ovations as the introduction to an international comeback.

7

FORM AND CHARACTER THE DESIGN Less is more. Circle and line attract each other. Flickering heat, crackling cold. Coarse rock, soft water. Bright light, deep shadows. Iceland is full of fabulous contrasts. As is S贸ley. S贸ley requires only two design elements for its strong expression: a circle, and a line. They combine to give the chair its geometry, and act like a signal.

FUNCTION AND ADVANTAGES THE PROGRAMME S贸ley gallery. A fountain of variants. S贸ley is available with and without upholstery and in lots of variants. Countless colour options make it perfect for combining.

FUNCTION AND ADVANTAGES THE FOLDING MECHANISM Metamorphosis. From object to object chair. What items still create a stir today? Sóley does! It’s the folding chair that doesn’t look like one. The secret is in the folding technology. The mechanism is hidden away, almost invisible, inside a fine groove in the backrest. To collapse the chair, simply push the rod assembly aside – and the chair already has a new dimension. Just now it was a handle – and now it’s a backrest. It guides the rod assembly of front and back legs to the centre attachment. The seat is locked in the same way. Quick transformation from an object to an object chair.

FUNCTION AND ADVANTAGES THE WALL OBJECT Hang up or join the group. A visual delight in either situation. Collapsed, S贸ley can be stored in a tiny space. Perhaps under the stairs. Or maybe as an attractive work of art on a wall. Like a picture. In standby mode, from the side, S贸ley is just 8 cm deep. And if there is suddenly a need for more chairs, perhaps at a lecture, a talk or an exhibition, then all you have to do is set up a few S贸leys and add them to the group. And S贸ley is twice the pleasure.

11

FUNCTION AND ADVANTAGES THE SILHOUETTE Elegant and slender. Built like a sculpture. Of course, Sóley is also a chair for sitting on. However, its magic lies in its artistically filigree appearance. Semi circle, circle, bow and straight line. An aesthetic play with shapes. Completely without fuss. Reduced down to the essential. The opposite of overloaded. Transparency for the senses. And for the room. Sóley is simply a good choice. And that’s the main reason why people choose it.

12

FUNCTION AND ADVANTAGES THE UPHOLSTERY Comfort and stylistic device together. The elegant flat upholstered seat. With S贸ley, the seating comfort starts under the upholstery. The top of the seat is gently shaped so the user can be sure of sitting comfortably. On top of it is the aesthetically flat upholstery which, thanks to the exclusive foam quality, does not have to be thick to be comfortable. The wide choice of exclusive, hard-wearing cover fabrics is the result of five fabric and three leather groups. If desired, fireproof fabric can be combined with flame-resistant upholstery foam.

13

QUALITY AND ECOLOGY HIGH STANDARDS Tested quality. Made by Kusch + Co in Germany. "Quality cannot be replaced by anything." In accordance with this Kusch + Co guiding principle, every product line undergoes the strictest quality checks. As does Sóley. The signet "Declaration of Conformity" with the plus mark indicates that these products have undergone and passed our own tests, which are equal to the GS tests and approved and certified by the TÜV Technical Inspection Agency.

14

QUALITY AND ECOLOGY THE RECYCLABLE MATERIAL Steel and wood. As lovely as they are environmentally friendly. 97 % of the materials used for Sóley can be separated and recycled. The steel used for the leg frame is a recycling classic, and after being melted down is returned time and again to the recycling circle. The wood for the seat comes from sustainable ecologically and legally managed forests. It fulfils PEFC criteria. During the design stage, Sóley is already given a number of important features to guarantee a long life. This means that from the beginning, care is taken not to burden the environment. And if Sóley should ever end its career – after many decades, of course – then all of its components can be disposed of safely or recycled.
