WORDS OF WELCOME THE PRESIDENT OF THE SESSION Dear Teachers, Thank you for reading this booklet, for if you are reading it, it means you are participating in EYP and subsequently not only allowing our organisation to exist, but also, and more importantly, putting extra effort in ensuring the development of your pupils, which is an admirable deed that I cannot thank you for enough. My name is Anna and some of you have probably met me before – I have been involved in EYP (and EYP CZ) for some six years now, starting in 2013. Throughout my time with the organisation, I have been involved on most levels and aspects there are, and this time around I have the honour and pleasure of presiding the 21st NSC of EYP CZ that will take place in Plzeň. Just like at any National Selection Conference, our most visible goal is to select a “new generation” of future EYP CZ members. But the other, less visible, goals remain just as present – introducing the Delegates to different issues and their problematics that the European society is facing; allowing them to challenge their beliefs, their mindsets and showing them the braveness there is in confronting the status quo – both societal and personal. This year, we have tried to put together a set of topics that deals with the not-so-obvious underlying issues behind larger problems – AFCO will discuss the place rule of law has as a fundamental value of the European Union; CULT will talk about art and property restitutions – reminders of some of the horrors Europe went through in last century; EMPL I will look into keeping up with the evolving job market from the perspective of providing social security, while EMPL II will take on a similar issue, only from the perspective of urban development. ENVI I will focus on the management of plastic waste, and its sister committee, ENVI II, will investigate the possibilities of improving healthcare systems. ITRE will tackle sustainability of space programmes with their the ever-growing strategic importance and TRAN will dive into the issue of overtourism that plagues many Member States. By the time you will be reading this booklet, the Chairpersons of the respective committees will have started helping the Delegates prepare for their topics and for the Session as a whole; and they will continue to do so until the end of the session. The rest of the Officials’ Team is working equally hard on ensuring the smooth course of the session for the enjoyment of all its participants. Until the time for that comes, please enjoy this booklet and I will be looking forward to seeing you in Plzeň. Yours faithfully, Anna Hagarová |3
THE PRESIDENT OF EYP CZ Dear teachers, On behalf of the European Youth Parliament Czech Republic, it is my great pleasure and privilege to welcome you to the National Selection Conference in Plzeň. For the Czech National Committee, this session represents another opportunity to welcome students from different Czech high schools to their new EYP adventure. I believe that new generations of millennials and Gen X are bringing a revolutionary approach to education, and one of them is the constant need for education outside of the school premises. For this reason, the European Youth Parliament is a great organisation that offers not only the valuable knowledge, but also set of soft skills that are valued on the market these days. However, none of this would be possible to show and present to youngsters from all different corners of the Czech Republic, if we would not have such a great team of teachers that helps us. Thank you very much for all your support and patience. I hope this session will be enjoyable not only for your delegates, but for you as well. In case that you need anything, do not hesitate to approach us during any part of the session. See you soon! Olga
HEAD ORGANISER OF THE SESSION Dear teachers, It is my pleasure to welcome you as part of the 21st National Selection Conference of EYP Czech Republic. My name is Valentina, and I am the Head Organiser of the conference you are about to attend in a short while. I am very happy to have you with us, because you, the teachers, support the students in the crucial element of education – longing for more. More knowledge, more abilities to cooperate with others, more friends, more experience, more opportunities to practice English, more will to work on themselves. I am fully aware of the fact that if it wasn’t you supporting them, most of them would not even consider applying for the session. As my thank you for doing that, I promise we will do our best to organise the session in a way that your students will have the opportunity to get the most out of it. For those of you who have been with our organisation for several years already, I am very glad you stay with us and I hope that Plzeň 2019 will be the session you will remember as one of the best you have attended and it will fasten your trust in our organisation. For those of you who are about to attend our conference for the first time, I’m honoured to be given the opportunity to introduce you to EYP and what we do through the 21st National Selection Conference. I shall do my best to send you home with a feeling that this is something meaningful that is worth your time and your support. See you soon in Plzeň, Valentina

THE EDITOR OF THE SESSION Dear participants of Plzeň 2019,
I am profoundly excited to be chosen to be the Editor of the 21st National Selection Conference of EYP Czech Republic. The Czech Republic has become my favourite place to be abroad, I always feel like as it would be my second home as it reminds me so much of my home country, so similar yet so different, and as for someone studying audiovisual art, this country intrigues me with rich culture, street artists and some iconic film locations.
of the most
I am a strong believer that the best motivation is found in characters around you that you usually miss, in our busy and overwhelmingly filled lives and our small information bubbles, because only by observing everyone around you can find the greatest stories. An unexpected conversation between someone on public transport could lead to the birth of the greatest stories. My plan for the sessions’ Media Team will be quite similar, observing and looking for these stories worth telling. Creativity and ideas should never be restricted, but rather shaped and improved by sharing knowledge with others, giving it meaning beyond the superficial exterior. Thank you ALL for being here! This is definitely going to be a spectacular journey for everyone involved. See you soon, Ričards
HEAD OF JURY Dear teachers, First of all, let me thank you for taking your time to overcome mild obstructions to come here to Pilsen. You may have opened the door for your students that can lead to great personal development, friendship and adventures. I remember fondly my teacher who took me to my first EYP session a long time ago. Nobody could have predicted what role EYP would get in my life. Rest assured that all Officials will do all in their power to accommodate Delegates’ needs and make the best conditions possible for their growth. I am genuinely looking forward to meeting you soon. Matěj

ABOUT PLZEŇ Pilsen is a notable city located in the western part of the Czech Republic, known mainly for its beer tradition, which comes from the 19th century. In 2015 it held the status of European Capital of Culture but it is a very important industrial and trade city as well, not only in this region but most likely in all the central Europe. Pilsen is the fourth most populated and one of the oldest cities in the Czech Republic. The most prominent landmark of the city is the Cathedral of saint Bartoloměj which is a Gothic building with stunning interior and the tallest tower in the Czech Republic. Formally against to this building stands the second largest synagogue in the world – The Great Synagogue of Pilsen. Pilsen’s history is a great tourist attraction, however the city is also endowed with excitement for the brewery tradition. For the technical headway of this city is important the engineering complex Škoda, the industrial giant which was established in the 19th century. There are several reasons why Plzeň is the appropriate place to host the National Selection Conference. The geographical location of this town gives us the unique opportunity to attract people from another part of the Czech Republic, which is very important for further expansion and wider awareness of EYP CZ. Furthermore, the town provides us with splendid venues with beautiful interior and the perfect locations.

ROLE OF A TEACHER AT THE SESSION Teachers are an essential part of every conference of European Youth Parliament Czech Republic. Their aim should be to motivate the delegates to work as hard as they can while preparing for the session but also while they are actually discussing the issue. Make sure that they know how to prepare. It is important to explain to them what a precious experience it will be and how grateful they can be when they come prepared for the discussion. Preparation is the key to success and you, teachers, are always there for them. Moreover, it is very important to support them even at the session. They will probably suffer from some kind of healthy stress and a few kind words and questions if they are doing well are always very supportive.
