#01. GARDENA PUMP SPRAYER Ergonomic design project, 4 weeks
2010, Umea Institute of Design, Sweden
The task was to redesign Gardena’s existing pump sprayer by improving ergonomics and aesthetics. The project had a strong focus on ergonomic analysis, user testing and brand language. Concept models and weight models were tested by the target user to get the best ergonomic result. The form of the product was designed according to brand values and evaluated by Gardena’s design team.

CHAMFERS
> THE BRAND: “GARDENA” Gardena is a leading brand in gardening products which has its own design guidelines. For this task, we were also informed to follow the characteristics of Gardena. Intersecting volumes, chamfers and repetitive details are mostly seen in their form. As in their choice of colour, they only use turquoise, orange, tones of grey and black.
> TASK ANALYSIS To understand the user in a better sense, we did a user study in groups. After seeing the flowchart of the product, I did a brainstorming session and defined all the problems for each step in the usage of the sprayer. Videos that recorded the usage and the comments helped to reveal the ergonomic problems.

> FOCUS ON ERGONOMY I visualized the ergonomic problems that we faced during the user study. Problems mostly focused on (1) the trigger, (2) pain areas on hand and (3) the unstable position of the center of the weight and the hand
> PERSONA Jane and Robert are a British couple in their early 60’s. They enjoy their retired life by taking walks, gardening, making handcrafts and cooking. Their previous occupations were engineer and lawyer. They love spending time with their grandchildren. Growing their own vegetables for a healthier life is a huge proud for them. As they achieved most of their goals in life, there is still one left, and that is travelling around the world with a ship.

SELECTED CONCEPT
> CONCEPT SELECTION Three concepts were evaluated by a brainstarming session with classmates and Gardena Design Team. Criterias were the product’s relevancy to brand values, target group and ergonomic assertment. As a result, the concept which has an adjustable noozle that solves the unstable distance between the hand and weight was selected.

> USER CENTERED APPROACH While deciding on the handle of the sprayer, some weight models and sketch models were made. Models were asked to be tested by people both in target group and not. I decided on some important criterias and users graded the models according to each criteria. This helped me to understand the favors of different hand sizes and selecting the most appropriate model for the majority.
> FORMATION Key problems were turned into product ideas and forms.
FORM DEVELOPMENT
> BRAND LANGUAGE Various form alternatives were made and the most relevant one to design guidelines was selected. Chamfers and intersecting volumes were considered in the design.
3D MODELLING
> 3D MODELLING Selected design is modelled in Rhino to determine the proportions and size of the components clearly.
FINAL DESIGN
PRODUCT FEATURES
> ADJUST THE WATER DIRECTION The nozzle has 3 specific positions : downwards, straight and upwards. By adjusting the nozzle direction, user can keep the same hand position and this decreases the pain on the wrist.
> ADJUST THE NOZZLE By rotating the nozzle, user can adjust the amount of water you want to spray.
> FILLING WITH WATER The lid of the design is at the back of the container. It is approproate to fill it from the tap or from a bottle.
COMPARISON WITH THE EXISTING PRODUCT SUPPORT
LID
/ Existing product has a small and narrow support on the hand.
/ Existing product has to get seperated while filling with water.
/ New design has a big and wide support on the hand.
/ New design has a lid that offers an easier and fast use for users.
HANDLE
/ Existing product’s handle is straight and unergonomic while using. / New design has a curved handle that is more suitable for the hand and offers a natural grip.
NOZZLE
/ Existing product has a small and fixed(unmoveable) nozzle. / New design has a longer nozzle and adjustable. That prevents excessive wrist movements.
CONTAINER
/ Existing product’s container has a small diameter with a long height. That increases the distance between the center of the weight and hand. / New design has a closer distance between the centers because of low and wide container shape.
TRIGGER
/ Existing product’s trigger let the user to use 2-3 fingers that can depend on the user. / New design’s trigger has a longer and wider surface, closer to handle and let the user to use all 4 fingers.
#02. CHEF WANNABE Design process project, 4 weeks 2010, Umea Institute of Design, Sweden
There are many different circumstances when people needs guiding in the kitchen while cooking. Some examples are long and complicated recipes, unknown recipes or time-considerable recipes like baking. In the task, as a fictionous scenario, Philips enters a new market and wants to have a kitchen timer. I expanded the brief a little according to my findings in research. The final product became in between of a kitchen timer and an assistant chef that helps you in the kitchen. A need for an assistance in the kitchen during cooking process encouraged me to design this product. The project had a focus on design process, concept generation and brand language.
DESIGN BRIEF
BRANDMAPPING
MOODBOARD FOR ‘PHILIPS‘
> INTRODUCTION The task was to design one of the products as kitchen timer, kitchen scale or personal shopper for a specific brand which can be Bang&Olufsen, Philips or OBH Nordica. I intended to design a kitchen timer for Philips at the start. While identifying the problems of a kitchen timer, I developed the product in a wider aspect and it turned into a “personal assistance product” in the kitchen.
> THE COMPANY: “PHILIPS” While analyzing Philips and its competitors, I’ve arranged the products of the related companies in “innovative-known” and “traditional-modern” axis. Philips products highly dominated innovated and modern area. This gave me a direction on which way to work on.

> YOUNG COUPLE Laurie and David is a Dutch couple on their 30’s, living in Amsterdam. They have just been married after a 7 year of relationship. Both have a very active work life and trying hard to balance between work and home life. They mostly have very long work hours which makes us them miss the home environment : especially kitchen! Laurie is vegetarian who takes care of her eating habits whereas David is a health freak who is addicted to doing sports and eating healthy food. As a couple, they are spending a quality time in kitchen and they expect to cook time-consuming good recipes as quick as possible in their kitchen. Honestly, they sometimes admit that they are dreaming of having a professional cook in their kitchen who would help the couple in cooking and ensure a delicious dish for dinner!

#03. ELEMENTS OF FORM Form exploration project, 10 weeks 2010, Umea Institute of Design, Sweden
In this extra course I took besides my studies in UID, I was asked to choose an insect as a starting point and develop a three dimensional form out of it. I chose “Mayfly as an insect to work on and explored different techniques like sketching in various medias such as foam, clay, paper modelling etc. to define the form. I intended to keep the form both abstract and has a feel of Mayfly in it. My final proposal is a sail boat as Mayfly is an aquatic insect.

#04. BREAKFAST SET Small appliances design, 5 weeks Designed in collaboration with Arcelik Inc.
2009, Internship project, Turkey Internationally known Turkish white goods brand Arcelik gave me the task of designing a small appliances set consisting of kettle, toaster and juicer in my summer internship. The goal of this project is to design a product family that shares some common ideas and reflect their family characteristic in their appearance. As breakfast set is used in the mornings, it should offer a fast usage. That’s why I chose the keywords “easy“ and “light” for the set. I implemented the keywords to each product for its own function and needs. The project had a focus in ideation and modelmaking as full scale model of the kettle was produced in the end of the process.

IDEATION
Heater is seperated from the main body and moves upwards while water is boiling
Heater is seperated from the main container and stays on the table, main container is moveable
> SELECTED CONCEPT
Main container and the heater is seperated. Container rotates to show the process visually to the user. Indication lights on it represents the remaining time. This concept was selected, as it is “light“ because heater and the container is seperated and it is “easy to understand“ as it shows the remaining time visually by rotating and indication lights on it.
