dj Max DJ Max of Radio Nova in France washed up on our shores last weekend to serve up tunes at GoldenEye’s Bizot Party. Oui caught up with him - translator in tow, for a chit chat.
Name:
Max GUIguet Game:
DJ at Radio Nova How do you spend your wknds in france?
I listen to a lot of music, different kinds of sounds, different kinds of beats, just different kinds of music. I’m also a musician in a band called Blundetto so I tend to use my weekends to work on compositions for the band or playing in small venues across France.
Is this your first time to Jamaica?
Second time. I was here two years ago at the launch of the Bizot Bar and we got as much out of it (the trip) as we could but it was difficult since we were there for a short time.
What excites you most about being here?
Meeting the people, the musicians, the artists; I always play at Goldeneye. Two years ago at the launch of the Bizot Bar I had to set up the radio broadcast but I went to a church right outside and got to experience a local mass and see what the ambiance was like, I tried to get a little bit in touch with the reality of everyday Jamaican life. I also went to see a few sound systems as well and I saw the Ochi open market. Whenever I go someplace new I go out and see what’s happening, and I try to discover the local scene.
What’s on your Jamaica-bucket-list?
A good local sound system with some authentic Jamaican music. Kingston is a bit of a trek, this time I was only here for four days so time was limited.
What kind of music best describes you?
I’m a big fan of Jamaican music, from the 50s until today. There are so many songs, so many different artists. But I’d say Jamaican soul music, like Ken Boothe in the 60s Rock Steady era.
Top 5 musicians?
James Blake (all songs, especially soul music from the 70s) Curtis Mayfield (Blue Monday People) Kaytranada Ken Boothe (anything by him) Courtney John

KIngston On the edge 2013
The brainchild of five friends, Kingston on the Edge (KOTE) art festival is the only event of its kind in Jamaica. This festival is a place where the arts, in all their forms, can be showcased freely over the week of the festival, outside of the constraints of the traditional outlets. The festival begins today with Renewal, being held at Redbones. Renewal will feature an exhibition as well as musical performances from Crimson Heart Replica and Rootz Underground. The show begins at 9:30pm.
Saturday’s offerings include a ceramics workshop, reenactments of Brothers Grimm stories, art exhibitions and the KOTE edition of Seh Sup’n. Sunday provides just as diverse a selection of art events as Saturday. Art lovers should be torn trying to decide which event to attend. Check out the schedule for details.

White cake ingredients
recipe
1 ¾ cups sifted cake flour 4 teaspoons baking powder ¾ teaspoon salt 4 egg whites 1 ½ cups granulated sugar ¾ cup butter 1 cup milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon almond extract (Makes one sheet cake or layer cake)
prep
Measure sifted cake flour, baking powder, and salt; sift together three times. In a mixing bowl, beat egg whites until foamy. Add ½ cup sugar gradually, and continue beating only until meringue will hold up in soft peaks. Beat butter until smooth. Gradually add remaining 1 cup sugar, and cream together until light and fluffy. Add sifted ingredients alternately with milk, a small amount at a time, beating after each addition until smooth. Mix in flavorings. Add meringue and mix thoroughly into batter. Spread batter in a 15 x 10 x 1 inch pan which has been lined on the bottom with parchment paper. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 30 to 35 minutes. Cool cake in pan 10 minutes, then remove from pan and transfer to a wire rack to finish cooling. This cake may also be baked in two 9 inch round pans for 30 to 35 minutes, or in three 8 inch round pans for 25 to 30 minutes. Top with white frosting and then add fresh fruit for a decorative touch.
