Jamaica, Land We Love July 19, 1962 The official anthem of Jamaica was selected on this day in 1962 by a Joint Committee of the Houses of Parliament, following an eager debate between two entries at the time. The lyrics were written by Hugh Sherlock and the composition and arrangement were done by Robert Lightbourne and Mapletoft Poulle respectively.

One Giant Leap for Mankind July 20, 1969 “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” On this day in 1969, Neil Armstrong and Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldrin, from the USA, became the first humans to set foot on the Moon. Carried aboard the Apollo 11, the astronauts made the first human footprints on the moon, and then raised their nation’s flag.

World’s First Female Prime Minister July 21, 1960 Sirimavo Bandaranaike of Sri Lanka, then known as Ceylon, made history on this day in 1960 when she became the world’s first female prime minister. She subsequently served twice more, from 1970 - 1977 and 1994 - 2000.

Denieze Anderson Game:

Visual Artist, Creator and Creative Director of RISQ Fashion Magazine How has RISQ changed your wknds?

It changed all of it! I have a 9-5 during the week, so my weekends are spent working on the magazine: doing photo shoots, writing, going to fashion events etc.

Are you a foodie, techie or full-fledged fashionista?

I’m really a little of each, but I’m more of a low-key fashionista. I have my own style, and this is shown the most over the weekends where I get to dress up and live the RISQ brand.

In what way do we see Denieze, your personality or your flair in RISQ? All my visuals, imagination and passion can be seen in the magazine. The editing style is very unique, just like me. I’m not very typical.

Which local attraction are you dying to spend a part of your wknd at? Why?

I’d love to go to Tutti Frutti and Instagram it! LOL. Besides that, I’d love to spend my weekend at the Great Hut in Portland. I love how rustic and totally natural it is. I truly appreciate the little things and nature. The more natural, the freer.

Why fashion and why RISQ?

I think that the local fashion industry hasn’t been exposed enough, and I would love to use RISQ Fashion Magazine as a route to transform fashion as an export product that can generate profit for Jamaica. I created RISQ as an online magazine to showcase Jamaican and Caribbean fashion. Online media reaches a greater audience.

Branded “The Sexy New Play You Shouldn’t See” Taboo has been titillating the Jamaican Public with their vibrant promotions. The black and hot pink branding that have been seen on facebook, at Ultra ++ and wherever tickets are sold capture your attention almost immediately. And finally, the play that will leave everyone talking, is here. Taboo features Yendi Phillips in her acting debut as Gina, and theatre veterans Rodney Campbell as John, Lisa Williams as Sabrena and Keiran King as William. Talented in more ways than one, Keiran is also the playwright and producer for the show. Taboo is about two couples navigating this grown-up thing called life and the show promises drama, humour, and of course the taboo. Backstory, formerly Eight Seven Six, has put on two other critically acclaimed shows, Mr & Mrs Blacke (2012) and Last Call (2011), with them breaking new ground in the Jamaican theatre scene.

Taboo is showing at the The Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, Tuesdays - Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 6pm (Tuesdays are 2-4-1). Tickets are available for $1,500 at Monarch Pharmacy, Bookophilia or online through Yard Ticket.
