CONTENTS 1 Exercise "Form and Making" 2 Exercise "Elements and Opeartions of Form" 3 Exercise "The Application of Scale and Movement to Abstract Form"

4 Exercise "Case Study Analysis" 5 Exercise "A Public/Private House"

Exercise I: Form and Making

This is a beginning exercise that introduces the basic knowledges about the three formal elements: “Linear, planar, and volumetric". In this project, the students were asked to produce models with three assigned materials: “basswood sticks, foam core, and foam".

Study models

Final Model for Ex. 1 Those study models were made in order to show the formal elements in the design. The basswood stick shows the linear element by describing the frame of the cube. The foam core cube intends to show the planar element by introducing the surface of the cube. And the foam cube introduces the volume in the cube to show the volumetric element.

Model work: Linear Cube Size: 6 inch * 6 inch Material: wood sticks Comment: This model tries to show the linear element in the design by framing the cube without volume and a clear surface.

Study models

Exercise II: Elements and Opeartions of Form The goal of this exercise is to introduce the architectural operations and to apply them into the project. The project should also show the formal elements that were introduced in the previous exercise. The project for this exercise should show a combination of two formal elements.

This model was made in order to show the operation “Off-Set" in the cube and also to show the volumetric element in the design.

This model was made in order to show the operation “Off-Set" in the cube. The materials were chose in order to investigate the communication between linear element and planar element.

Final Model & Elvation Drawing for Ex. 2

Model work: Mirroring Cube Size: 9 inch * 9 inch Material: wood sticks, foam Comment: This model was made in order to show the operation “Mirroring" in this project. In this project, all parts mirror to each other on the other side of the cube in this model. The wooden structure represents the lightest part of the project while the foam blocks represent the heaviest part of this project. Therefore, a connection of the transformation of weight is made in the project. This project also talks about the combination of linear element and volumetric element from the previous exercise.

Elvation Drawing for Ex.2

Exercise III: The Application of Scale and Movement to Abstract Form

The goal of this project is to transform the object each produced in Ex. 2.4 from full-size, unscaled, non-representational artifacts into architectural models at a scale of 3/8”=1’-0”, which means that these 9” cubes now represent a building in the form of a 24’-0” cube. The operation that applied in the previous cube should be kept and the scale of the project should be considered.

Study Models

Model work: Cube One Size: 6 inch * 6 inch Material: wood sticks, foam core Comment: This model was made in order to investigate the interior space inside the model. In the previous model, the space inside the model was not considered. The material was changed from foam to foam core because foam core can show the interior space of the model by making the interior space occupiable.

Study Models

Final Cube & Perspective drawings Model work: Cube Two Size: 9 inch * 9 inch Material: wood sticks, foam core Comment: This model was designed based on the previous model. This model tries to make the communication between different parts stronger and to arrange the zone of movement in a more reasonable way.

Model work: Final Cube for Ex.3.2 Size: 9 inch * 9 inch Material: wood sticks, foam core Comment: This model is the final version of this series. Compares to the previous cubes, this cube is designed to emphasize the operation of this project which is mirroring. The direction of movement in this cube forms a circulation that brings the visitors different experience in every stop in the cube from the heaviest zone to the lightest zone.

Exercise IV: Case Study Analysis

Diagrams for House in Vallarca The goal of this exercise is to apply the knowledge in the previous knowledge to an analysis an architectural project designed by professional architects. New drawing technical will also be introduced in this exercise. Through this process, students will improve their architectural fluency and discover strategies and techniques to subsequently apply to their own design work.

These are the diagram drawings for this house. Each of these drawings represents one or more aspect(s) from the five assigned elements: Formal elements (line, plane, volume) Formal operations and conditions Scale Movement Context

Exercise V: A Public/Private House

Study Model In this exercise, students will be asked to apply the skills and design processes they have developed in the previous four exercises to the design of a new dwelling and studio for an artist. This work studio will include three types of space, which may be separated and/ or integrated according to the students’ design ideas: -Work space -Exhibition space It will be especially important for students to consider conditions of publicness and privacy in their studio designs. Students should correlate their utilization of formal elements, formal operations, scale, movement, and context with degrees of publicness and privacy in the various spaces of the live/ work studio.

The art media assigned for this project is Performance Art. Additionally, the students were assigned with a precedent house from Ex.4. The precedent house for this project is the Escherick House by Louis Kahn. After an analysis with this project, I found the zone of movement as a highlight of this project. The zone of movement divides the house into public side and private side. The zone of movement also creates different experience that the visitors will have in the building. This model was made in order to fit the requirments for performance art. A large space is left inside the model and the direction of movement forms a circulation. The advantage of this design is that the cistors and audiences can get different experience in the building. Also, the private space is divided from the exhibition space.

Study Model II

Final Model This model was designed to have the maximum space that can be functional as the exhibition space, performance space, and the studio space for the artist. The theme of this project is to allow the visitors to have different experience in the project. Therefore, three stages are arranged and they all provide different experience for the visitors and audiences. The stair case is concentrated in this project to save the space and to form a zone of movement which is extracted from the precedent house.

This is the final model for this exercise. This model carries all the design ideas include the circulation of movement, the different experience that the vistors gain in vertical direction, and the zone of movement that divides the building into two parts. The model is designed based on the previous model. However, the final design includes the design of the garden in it. The circulation of movement extends into the garden and connects the building with a stair case. Therefore, there is connection between the garden and the main building. There is a special moment in the building where the stairs at the two sides of the galss lead to the same direction but the group of peoplle who are traveling on them are completely different because the interior stair case connects the stage and the baskstage while the exterior stair is a completely public space.
